According to tradition, we begin our acquaintance with the city from the historical center, where the most significant sights and architectural monuments are concentrated.

The first thing that attracts the attention of tourists is the central square, named after Přemysl Ottokar II, the Czech king who ruled the country in the second half of the 13th century. The privileges that the king granted to the city allowed it to quickly and successfully develop, becoming the center of the region.

The square is surrounded by attractive buildings with bright colors that are pleasing to the eye even on cloudy days. The City Hall, built in Baroque style, also stands majestically on it. Its facade is decorated with sculptures depicting human virtues such as Prudence, Wisdom, Courage and Justice. What’s interesting: on the roof of the middle tower crowning the town hall, there is a belfry, the 18 bells of which ring every hour, delighting citizens and guests of the city with different melodies.

The Black Tower stands out from the background of other buildings - a bell tower in the Gothic-Renaissance style with domes of the corresponding color and a height of 72 meters. There are six bells in the tower. Previously, there were so-called tower guards on duty, who at certain intervals shouted in a melodious voice the phrase “Praise be Jesus Christ forever and ever!” Their duties also included monitoring the clock on the tower and notifying the city about fires, tragedies, and celebrations. The bell ringers lived in the tower along with their families and household, and were on duty around the clock.

Currently, tourists can climb the tower for free, but to view the panorama of the city will have to pay an additional fee of 30 crowns. Of course, the best view is the central square, in the middle of which the beautiful Samson Fountain gushes with streams of water - a tribute to the Baroque style, gathering people who want to bask in the sun or just chat. In the distance you can see the Novograd Mountains, quarters of the old city, and behind them modern buildings.

The highlight of the square, which attracts the attention of tourists with the legend associated with it, is the Prodigal Stone - a pentagonal stone with an image of a cross, which has remained in this place since the 16th century. According to legend, this was the place of execution, and a person who, out of ignorance, steps on this stone after 10 pm will wander around the city all night and will not be able to find his way home until the morning.

Church of St. Nicholas

One of the corners of the central square is crowned by the Church of St. Nicholas - the cathedral of the diocese and the residence of the bishop of this city. The church was built almost immediately after the construction of Ceske Budejovice and was named after St. Nicholas. The building combines Gothic and Baroque styles, maintaining ancient statues and carved plaster in the interior. At one time, there was a city cemetery near the cathedral, which, however, was closed in 1784.

Of particular interest to animal lovers is the Hoch Zoo, named after the founder Ferdinand Hoch. The zoo specializes in breeding and selling exotic birds, terrarium and aquarium animals. Story

The city was founded in 1265 by the Czech king Přemysl Ottokar II. The city layout was carried out in a strict checkerboard pattern. At this time, two churches and many bourgeois houses were built here around the central square, including the city hall. The entire city was surrounded by fortified walls with towers and three gates. In the 16th century, the city experienced a powerful economic boom, associated primarily with silver mining, as well as with the development of fishing and salt trade. The construction of buildings in Budejovice during this period was subject to the canons of Renaissance architecture. In 1569, a mint was founded in Budejovice, where coins were minted from silver mined in the vicinity of the city.

The Thirty Years' War did not cause much damage to the city, but in July 1641 there was a huge fire that destroyed more than half the houses. The restoration of the city lasted for several decades. The Baroque era significantly changed the appearance of the city; during this period, a number of religious sites were built, as well as the Samson Fountain in the central square, which is one of the symbols of the city.

In the 18th century, the growth of the city's cultural significance was facilitated by the founding of a Latin gymnasium, a city theater and a philosophical Institute. Under Emperor Joseph II, the Bishopric of Budweiser was founded in 1785.

In the 19th century, technological progress affected almost all aspects of city life. The horse-drawn railway, built between 1825 and 1832 and connecting Ceske Budejovice with Linz, was the first such structure in Europe. During the same period, merchant shipping developed on the Vltava River. The development of transport is closely connected with the growth of industry and trade. In 1847, the Hardtmut company (manufacturer of stationery products under the Koh-i-noor brand) from Vienna moved the production of pencils and clay products to Budejovice, and therefore the first large factory appeared in the city. In 1895, the Czech joint-stock brewery, currently known as the Budweiser Budvar brewery, was founded.

Until the end of the 19th century, the population of the city and surrounding villages was primarily German, but gradually the Czech population began to predominate. However, until 1918, the burgomasters of the city were Germans. In 1945, following the end of World War II, the Budweiser Germans were deported to West Germany and Austria.

In the twentieth century, Ceske Budejovice became the economic and cultural capital of Southern Bohemia. Since 1991, the South Bohemian University has been operating in Ceske Budejovice, and since 2000 the administration of the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic has been located in the city.

The city of Ceske Budejovice is located at the intersection of the transport axes Prague - Linz and Vienna - Ceske Budejovice - Pilsen. From north to south, the R 3/E 55 expressway runs through the city, connecting the Czech capital Prague with the city of Linz in southern Austria.
