Historical data
The history of the city goes back more than 2,500 years, so it will be of interest not only to entertainment lovers, of whom many come here, but also to connoisseurs of history and attractions. When ancient Sukhum appeared, Abkhazia did not yet exist, and the name of the settlement was completely different.
The development of the settlement began in the 6th century BC with a small merchant colony called Dioskouriadou. Quite quickly it turned into a shopping center, which was facilitated by its more than favorable location. The exchange of goods was carried out not only throughout the region, but also with the peoples of the North Caucasus, and this situation remained until the 1st century BC, until the Mithridatic Wars began, and the settlement lost both commercial and political significance.
Ancient Abkhazia was destroyed quite often; Sukhumi was no exception. The next time the city was rebuilt by the Romans in 65 BC, it was called Sebastopolis. The fortress performed protective functions for about 200 years, but then began to collapse and was abandoned. A new period of revival occurred in the 6th century under the Byzantines and lasted until the 8th century, when the city was destroyed by Arab conquerors.
The city of Sukhumi in Abkhazia received its modern name in 1578 after the seizure of part of the territory of the Abkhazian kingdom by the Turks, but at that time it was called Sukhum-Kale. After some time, the lands were again returned to Abkhazia, after which from the 18th century to 1864 the residence of the prince was located in the city and it received the status of the capital.
In 1810, Abkhazia joined Russia and the city suffered alternating periods of decline and development, which continued until the times of the USSR. During that period, active construction and restoration of city buildings and the formation of the initial infrastructure began.
Numerous tourists began to come to the city, which was facilitated by the rather mild climate and the close proximity of the sea, as well as the presence of numerous resort facilities. After the collapse of the USSR, the Abkhaz city of Sukhum became the capital of an independent state, and the country during this period continued its development as a tourist destination, attracting travelers from all over the world.

Undoubtedly, one of the closest resorts that most attracts Russian tourists is Sukhumi, Abkhazia. The fate of this city is very interesting, and its roots go back centuries. Ancient ethnic groups lived on this territory back in the days of the primitive system, and in the 6th century AD, a city grew here on the Black Sea coast. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see all the sights that were built here during the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Classicism, since it was literally wiped off the face of the Earth several times. Now one of the most visited resorts is Sukhumi. Abkhazia, although separated from Georgia, still contains many traditions of this wonderful country.
The new history of the city begins in the twentieth century, when it was rebuilt by the Soviet authorities. At that time, hotels and boarding houses were built in Sukhumi, and private development was very popular. Over the course of the entire century, many luxurious villas have grown here, which belonged to the authorities and rich people. Thus, it is on the territory of Sukhumi that Abkhazia appears to the traveler in the form of strict and at the same time light streets, on which gray faceless Soviet boarding houses and luxurious cottages coexist, which were built before and continue to be built now.
One of the main attractions of the city is the local Botanical Garden, which was founded back in 1840. It is a real magnet for all tourists, as well as for researchers who conduct their experiments here and expand their knowledge. In the next century, a monkey nursery was opened near the garden, which also became a research center. It was this place, according to USSR scientists, that made a huge contribution to the development of science.
In the lands of the city of Sukhumi, Abkhazia also manifests itself in all its high cost, since this particular resort in the entire region is considered the most fashionable. But despite this status, there are still a lot of “Sovdep” hotels, cafes and even canteens preserved here. However, local entrepreneurs are working hard to ensure that all establishments in the city have a European level of both conditions and service. It is worth noting that the most popular hotel in Sukhumi is Ritsa. Many vacationers note that the prices are very humane.
Sukhumi (Abkhazia) is a green and picturesque Black Sea city. A map of this region shows that it is located in a subtropical climate, and therefore there are no harsh winters here. On New Year's Eve the temperature drops to +10 degrees, and in the summer it rises above 30. The sun's rays perfectly warm the sea, and the entire city is surrounded by the greenery of eucalyptus trees, palm trees and other tropical plants. The air here is extremely clean, so people suffering from respiratory ailments often come here.
Sukhumi is also a health resort city in this region; oddly enough, it is equipped much better than even expensive hotels, and the health program in them is very effective. Most often, people with asthma, heart failure, and also in cases where there is a risk of stroke are sent here.
A little about the capital of Abkhazia, the city of Sukhum.
Sukhum is the capital of Abkhazia, a city with ancient history, which is located on the shores of the Black Sea and the quiet Sukhumi Bay. Abundant and lush subtropical vegetation with imported tropical exotics, a favorable climate, an abundance of mineral water sources, beaches with clear sea water make Sukhum an attractive resort center.
The city of Sukhum owes its formation to the ancient Greeks, who colonized the Black Sea coast. The first name given by the Greeks to the city in the 6th century BC was Dioscuria. The city arose on the site of ancient settlements that existed on the northeastern outskirts of Sukhum, in the area of Mount Yashtukha. Over the two and a half millennia of its existence, the city changed names and was called Sebastopolis, Sukhum-Kale. While it was part of Georgia, Sukhum was called in the Georgian manner - Sukhumi.
The history of the city goes back more than two and a half millennia. Sukhumi is one of the oldest cities in the world. Greek merchants from Miletus founded the city in those distant times. On the site of the settlement of Akua, the Greek village of Dioscuria was formed. Dioscuria ensured trade with the entire Caucasus. In the first century AD, the Mithridatic Wars reduced the importance of Dioscuria. Our era was marked by the arrival of the Romans and thanks to them the fortress of Sebastopolis (Holy City) appeared. In the 6th century, the Byzantines came and captured the already dilapidated fortress. The period of prosperity gave way to a decline, which was caused by the Arabs who came here in the 8th century. They were unable to gain a foothold, but they destroyed the city. The Abkhazian kingdom emerges and a village with the name Tskhum has been known since 736. Then the period of being part of the Georgian kingdom and the name Tskhumi. Then there was a small town called Sabediano. In the 15th century, the Genoese came and colonized the Black Sea coast. 16th century - arrival of Turkey. In 1578, the Turks captured the city and call it Sukhum-Kale. Only at the end of the 18th century the Abkhazians recaptured the city from the Turks and the prince of Abkhazia moved his capital there. A, February 17, 1810, after five years of work to bring Abkhazia into Russia, Sukhum-Kale became part of the Russian Empire. Türkiye tried unsuccessfully to restore its control over Sukhum-Kale. Since 1866, the city began to be called Sukhum. The events of 1917 brought with them many changes. German invaders, then English ones appear and disappear. Joining Menshevik Georgia. In Abkhazia, on March 4, 1921, Soviet power was established and Sukhum became the capital of the union republic, and then Sukhumi became the capital of the autonomy within Georgia. Then there was perestroika and the collapse of the USSR. On August 14, 1992, troops of the State Council of Georgia entered Abkhazia. After the entry of Georgian troops, an armed confrontation ensued, which escalated into the Georgian-Abkhaz war, which lasted 413 days and ended with the defeat of Georgian troops on September 30, 1993. Since then, Sukhum has been the capital of the independent Republic of Abkhazia.
Before the collapse of the USSR, Sukhumi was considered a multinational city. The destinies of different peoples are connected with this city. Being at the intersection of trade routes, the city attracted representatives of different countries. The lives of people of different nationalities are intertwined in Sukhumi. Residents used nine languages in everyday life.
Apsils, Abazgians, Greeks, Romans, Genoese, Venetians, Byzantines, Turks, Germans, Armenians, Russians, Georgians (mostly Mingrelians) lived in Abkhazia and Sukhumi. Since 1992, the population of Abkhazia has declined sharply. Ethnic Greeks were taken out by the Greek authorities. Georgians fled to Georgian territory. The Russians tried to get out to Russia.
Nowadays the city of Sukhum occupies an area of over 23 square meters. km. The city blocks of Sukhumi are located between the Gumista and Kyalasur rivers on the banks of Sukhumi Bay. The central part of Sukhumi is located near the Black Sea. The city embankment stretches along the central part of the city from the Red Bridge (in the eastern part of Sukhum) to the Mayak (Red Lighthouse) district.
Sukhum is located in the Center of Abkhazia. Sukhum is separated from the border with Russia by 107 km. Most of the city lies on the coastal plain. Over many years, rivers carried a lot of rocks from the mountains and created a small plain. Mountains block access to cold northern winds. Climatic The peculiarity of Sukhum is the uniformity of the temperature regime and the absence of sharp winds and moderate air humidity. The average monthly temperature in the hottest period - July and August does not exceed an average of 22.1 - 22.2 ° C.
The ancient history of Sukhum has left many monuments. The remains of the ancient Dioscurias, the historical Makhadzhirov embankment, the botanical garden and Sukhumi arboretum, Bagrat Castle, Queen Tamara's bridge, the Marheul mineral spring. The architecture of the city is replete with representatives of the colonial style, which was created in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th. Small mansions represent Sukhum as a provincial city of the Russian Empire. The legacy of the Soviet era has also been preserved in the form of block apartment buildings in new areas and Stalinist classicism. The city was formed from the Mikhailovskaya embankment, now the Makhadzhirov embankment. One can say about the architecture of Sukhum that it is a specific southern and coastal city adjusted to the East.
The city has an abundance of rare trees. Relics of the pre-glacial period and exotic tropical plants. Magnolias are a representative of the American continent. Roses, date and Chinese fan palms, eucalyptus, larches and Pitsunda pines. The ancient and medieval history of the city is represented by the ruins of the Roman fortress of Sebastopolis (the city received this name in the 1st century BC, during the period of Roman rule), the fortress-castle of the king of Abkhazia Bagrat (X-XI centuries).
There is a lot to see in Sukhumi. A lot has been left behind by centuries of history. The Beslet arch bridge, dating back to the 12th century, is unique for its prayer inscription. Abkhazia, not far from Sukhum, has its own Great Abkhazian Wall. The fortification towers of the Great Abkhaz Wall, the largest defensive structure in the Caucasus, are striking in their size (the total length of the structures is 58 km). Sukhum was defended by watchtowers of Genoese merchants of the 15th century and fortresses of Turkish Janissaries dating back to the 18th century.
The city is multinational and therefore multi-religious. The city has places of worship of different religions. Cathedral of the Annunciation, Lutheran church, Polish church and synagogue. 12 kilometers from Sukhum there is an object of pilgrimage - the Kaman Temple of the 10th-12th centuries, erected on the site of a tranquility in the 4th century AD. St. John Chrysostom. His stone tomb is located in the temple. In the center of the city, in the Park of Glory, a monumental complex was built in memory of the heroes who died for the freedom of Abkhazia in the Patriotic War of 1992-93.
In addition to architectural monuments, the city's attractions are the Sukhumi embankment and coastal park, the Botanical Garden (founded in 1840), and the arboretum, which have collected thousands of exotic flowers and plants from all over the world. The Sukhumi monkey nursery has been famous since Soviet times.
The Dioskouri embankment and the Mahadzhirov embankment form the coastline of the city.
Theater Square, named after the Abkhaz State Drama Theater, goes directly to the sea. On the square there is the Central Exhibition Hall of the Union of Artists and the Drama Theater named after S. Ya. Chanba. In addition to these theaters, the Russian Drama Theater operates in Sukhumi.
In the north of the city, near the Gumista River, there is a 37-meter Sukhumi lighthouse. It was made in France and brought to Abkhazia in 1864.
Sukhumi has a large selection of different cafes and restaurants. There are entertainment centers where you can play billiards and bowling. As a rule, large establishments operate all year round. There are many sanatoriums and hotels in the city that specialize in Russian tourists.
There is a large market in Sukhumi, where people from all over Abkhazia come to shop. At the Sukhumi market you will find a large selection of homemade products (cheese, cottage cheese, milk, fruits, vegetables and herbs, preparations, spices, honey, wine and chacha), clothing, household chemicals and other general goods.
The city is served by a seaport, railway station, buses and trolleybuses. So far, one train from Moscow is arriving at the Sukhum railway station. Communication by sea is not possible. Buses are the most developed type of transport that connects all the cities of Abkhazia. The trolleybus rolling stock was damaged during the war. During the Soviet era, the trolleybus fleet was formed by Czechoslovak Skodas, but during the war and after they all fell into disrepair. Trolleybus traffic was restored due to decommissioned trolleybuses from Russia (in particular from Moscow). Later, purchases of new cars began.
Among the Russian cellular operators, MTS, Beeline, and Megafon operate in roaming. For a long holiday in Sukhum, it is recommended to use the services of local mobile network operators. This is Aquafon or A-Mobile. Using local cell phone providers can save you significant money on long-distance calls. Collection points and payment replenishment machines are located everywhere.
The best time for a holiday in the city of Sukhum is from July to September, but this does not cancel the holiday at other times. The water temperature in October is above +20 degrees. The water is slightly below +20 degrees in May, but the hotter days make swimming very refreshing.
______________________________________________As you already know, I was recently in Abkhazia and today I’m ready to present my first photo report. It will be around the city of Sukhum (Georgian version - Sukhumi) and will be a little longer than usual, since unlike Istanbul, I did not break this trip into many small posts. We spent about two and a half days in the city. Abkhazia is a partially recognized state, in particular by Russia and several other small countries. The rest of the world considers this country part of Georgia, occupied by Russia. I won’t delve into politics, and not everything is simple; if anyone is interested, google the war between Abkhazia and Georgia of 1992-1993. Let me just say that the country has still not recovered from that war, and more than twenty years have passed. So, let's go. Sukhum is located approximately 120 km from the border with Russia and is located almost in the middle of the country. We found a guest house in the suburbs of Sukhum with cheap prices and settled in there. We arrived in the evening and only had time to walk to the sea to film the sunset. In the morning we rushed to the city, as always there was no plan.
02. Having arrived in the city by trolleybus (cost 5 rubles), we noticed tall abandoned buildings on the seashore. As we got closer, entire territories of mothballed sanatoriums opened up to us. That is, they were not destroyed, they slowly died. The locks and glass were intact, and security patrolled the area. But walking there, you got the feeling that these buildings would never open again. We decided not to break down the doors to separate rooms (even though we really wanted to walk around inside) but to climb onto an abandoned tall building and look around from above.
03. After playing a little as spies, we ended up at the top.
04. Do you see a two-story building with broken windows? It is not clear why the first floor there is occupied by a Russian army post. We didn’t dare ask them.
05. View of the city, on this side there are mainly private houses.
06. No, it’s not a ship standing in the distance, it’s the marine terminal building. We decide to go to him.
07. The Parliament building of Abkhazia was built in 1960 and stood out strongly against the background of other buildings in the city; it was a symbol of the development and well-being of the people. The building was heavily damaged in 1993 as a result of the battles for the liberation of Sukhumi.
08. It seems that the only new building is a business center.
09. The climate is very good for plants; it is difficult to move in abandoned houses as they turn into real jungles.
11. We head in a roundabout way to the Sukhum embankment. Sometimes we notice such random art objects.
12. View of the city from the embankment.
13. National sport. Announcements about the Masters game are posted all over the city, just at the end of September.
14. Here is another view from the embankment. Nelya + Lyalas = legs
15. This dolphin was unlikely to amuse children in its best years, but now it is in an abandoned bar and generally causes horror.
16. The station building is only operational on the first floor, the rest are abandoned, but entry there was by passes and we never got around to swimming).
17. Beautiful house on the embankment.
18. Heading towards the parliament building we met a grandmother who complained to us about the hard life and the abundance of cats and dogs which were becoming increasingly difficult to feed.
19. Meanwhile we are at the goal. Freedom Square, before entering we decided to look at the adjacent buildings.
20.
21.
22.
23. Through the elevator shafts, bars were passed prohibiting the rise to the top.
24. We spent half an hour there, but I took almost no photographs.
25. The stadium is being restored.
26. Meanwhile, sunset is coming and we still need to get to the railway station. But I remember that there are abandoned carriages near the station and we go to look for them. Let's take a preliminary look around from above.
27.
28.
29. During the war, the Georgians stole all the diesel locomotives. The railway now only reaches Sukhum. Two trains a day from Russia is all its traffic.
30.
31.
32.
33. They say that Russia helped repair the railway and shared electric locomotives.
34.
35.
36.
37. And here is the evening Moscow-Sukhumi, by the way there is a route to St. Petersburg but it takes so long and is so expensive that it’s easier by plane.
38. Interesting all-terrain vehicle.
39. We got to the station already at dusk. I had to go home. It turned out that transport here begins to wind down as early as seven o’clock. The driver of the last bus, whose route was different from the one we needed, upon learning that it was our first time here, showed kindness and took us to the desired stop. It must be said that Abkhazians are sympathetic and hospitable people.
40. But back to the station, I took this photo a few days later than the others, but I don’t see the point in leaving it there.
41. "The building of the Sukhumi station impresses with its beauty: rich stucco molding, beautiful decoration and beautiful architecture. Unfortunately, the station building, built in the 50s of the twentieth century, was almost destroyed as a result of the military conflict in 1993." Now, alas, there are no traces of restoration visible on it.The station building is completely empty - everything was looted long ago. All that remained were patterned windows, stucco, drawings, stripped walls and a clean floor. There are even figs growing on the second floor of the building, as well as other bushes and trees.
42.
43.
44.
45. After these photos we left for New Athos. There will be a separate post.
46. We returned to the city at sunset.
47.
48. A few words need to be said about a cat named Trotsky. I have never seen such a purring and at the same time impudent cat in my life.
49. “Come on, pet me, man!”
50. One rainy day we were supposed to go to Pitsunda, but we only got to the city and decided to get wet here and go up to the observation deck. On the way we came across an abandoned railway station. "The Guma railway platform is located in the city of Sukhum, the capital of the republic. In the area of the platform there are the Sukhumi Botanical Garden and the famous monkey nursery. The station pavilion is a gallery connecting service premises located on the right and left sides of the building. From Leon Avenue, The station is approached by an original staircase, the second level of which bifurcates towards the two entrances to the pavilion."
51. Here, everyone over 25 years old should have music from Santa Barbara playing.
52. Features of living in houses in Abkhazia. Half the house may be completely abandoned. I hope that those who live like this don’t get too much wind in the winter.
53. The House of Trade Unions is being devoured by ivy, the first floor is ruined, on the second the door is closed and the air conditioner is hanging.
54.
55. Where there are abandoned buildings there are always cows, this is an axiom.
56. Traffic lights for two trains a day are apparently not needed.
57.
58. We are finally on the way to the observation deck. It’s not easy for these cats here, I’ll tell you later.
59. This is some kind of intermediate platform, since there is still somewhere to go.
60.
61.
62. But at the top everything turned out to be dull and uninteresting. The observation deck has long been overgrown with trees.
63.
64. Restaurant building, buses used to go here. Tourists and city residents admired the view, then ordered barbecue and wine.
65. We are going down, a couple of hours have passed, but the cats are already different, we couldn’t find out how many of them there are.
66.
67. Black spots in apartments..
68. Residents say that the train is not running, and we ourselves saw the destroyed road, but the trees continue to grow so as not to hit the train.
69. Suddenly below is the house where we lived. Great price and location, the only problem is getting to the station with a transfer, otherwise it’s ok.
70.
71. Are you probably already tired? Here is the last abandoned cinema for you, which is located near the train station.
72.
73.
74.
75.
76.
77.
78.
79.
80. Of course, there are other “normal” attractions in the city. And having visited, I can say that it is better to go to the beaches of Abkhazia than to Sochi. Thanks to those who read to the end).
