This country is predominantly mountainous, due to which the climate here is distinctly continental. Summer is sunny and very dry, and winter is quite cold and snowy, so when to go on vacation to Armenia depends on your intentions.
The seasons allow for a wide variety of holidays. Therefore, everyone can find something to their liking here. The main resorts and cities are:
- - the capital and most charming city of Armenia. Its residents themselves often call it “little Paris” (but there are slight similarities). They also like to call it the “pink city”, since most of the buildings are built from pink tuff. Here you can see the sights, visit museums, theaters, the opera house and many restaurants and pubs.
- - the main ski resort of the country, which is located in a picturesque valley at the base of Mount Teghenis. The resort boasts a modern cable car and convenient trails.
- - a cozy town with a comfortable microclimate, surrounded by picturesque nature with mountains, forests and lakes. The city has the status of a National Park.
- is a resort town famous for its mineral springs, landscape views and natural attractions, some of which are protected by UNESCO.
- - the main alpine lake of the country, which is considered one of the largest lakes in the Caucasus. There are hotels and sandy beaches here.
As you can see from the list, there is plenty to do in this picturesque country. Therefore, the best time to travel to Armenia in 2019 depends on the chosen holiday destination and your preferences.
Armenia in winter
In winter, the air temperature depends on the altitude of the area. On average, temperatures from -5 to -10 °C can be recorded in the capital, and in mountainous areas - as low as -20 °C. If you want to visit the country during the New Year and Christmas period in 2019, you can spend an interesting holiday at a ski resort. Snow often remains on mountain tops until spring, so even during holidays such as St. Valentine (celebrated very brightly in the country) and February 23, you can have time to ski on well-equipped slopes and enjoy the fresh air. They don’t have the lowest prices, so it’s better to take care of your trip in advance.
Armenia in spring
As a rule, it comes gradually, slowly. In March, snow lies only in mountainous places, but in the capital the first notes of the aroma of spring can already be felt. If you are planning a vacation at the beginning of spring, keep in mind that March 8 is celebrated here on a grand scale. However, it should be noted that in the spring it often rains here, so it is better to spend your holidays in the capital, where you can always run into a cozy cafe and drink aromatic coffee. By the way, holidays in the spring will cost less.
Guests are treated to sunny and warm weather. The main tourist season begins this month.
Armenia in summer
Summer in this sunny country is quite hot and dry. Temperatures from +35 °C to +40 °C are very often recorded in the capital, which is why going outside in the afternoon is a real torture. Although, according to reviews, tourists from northern countries like this summer. Still, it is better to explore the architecture and sights of Yerevan before noon or late in the evening.
If you are wondering when is the best time to go to Armenia, then summer is the most comfortable time. Despite the heat, most tourists visit the country in the summer. At this time, you can visit all the main resorts of the country, swim in Lake Sevan, try the famous Ishkhan fish baked on coals, and see all the significant places and attractions of the country.
Perhaps this is the most beautiful time, which allows you to enjoy the warm colors and romantic atmosphere. A comfortable velvet season is established here, which still allows for a beach holiday in Sevan, and in October the weather arrives suitable for leisurely excursion trips. Daytime temperatures in the capital are often between +20 and +26 °C. November will also allow for a pleasant holiday, but more so in the capital, since in the mountainous areas and Sevan the air temperature becomes quite low. When planning the November holidays, it is worth deciding on the cultural program - there is room to expand in this regard.
In autumn, various holidays and festivals take place in Armenia. This is the time of harvest, grapes and weddings.
Hello friends! Today we have an article with purely practical information. We tell you how to travel to Armenia on your own: what documents are needed, do you need a foreign passport, how to get there, what to eat, where to live, where to go, and so on.
Are you planning a trip to Armenia? Read our detailed guide!
Documents and visa
Citizens of the Russian Federation, the CIS and Georgia do not require a visa to Armenia, and they can stay in the country for as many as 180 days in a six-month period. Do you need a foreign passport to travel to Armenia? No, the usual is enough: on January 24, 2017, an agreement was signed allowing citizens of the Russian Federation to enter Armenia using a general passport. They promise that the new rules will come into force in the summer of 2017, but for now you can travel with a foreign passport that is valid for the duration of the trip.
If you have foreign citizenship, then a visa will be required. It can be issued either at the consulates of Armenia, or upon arrival at Zvartnots airport, or upon entry through the land borders with Georgia. The cost of such a visa will be 3000 drams (for 21 days).
Entry to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR)
Citizens of Russia need to obtain accreditation, which can be done at the NKR representative office in Yerevan (Zaryan St., 17 a), or in Stepanakert itself. In any case, upon arrival, be sure to register with the consular service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Stepanakert (28 Azatamartikneri St.). Entry is carried out using a foreign passport, and no marks should be put on it.
After visiting Karabakh, you may have problems entering Azerbaijan, you should be allowed in, but a long conversation at the border cannot be avoided. However, Russian citizens are not given stamps in their passports when visiting the NKR, please keep an eye on this.
Foreign citizens need to obtain a visa to Karabakh in Yerevan in advance, its cost is only 3,000 drams (for 21 days). A regular visa is issued within 5 working days; you can get an urgent visa by paying the same amount.
Documents for traveling to Armenia with children
- a passport for a child, and if the child is under 14 years old, then he must be included in your passport
- birth certificate
- If a child is traveling with one of the parents, then a notarized permission from the other parent is required.
How to get to Armenia?
By plane
The most convenient way to get to Armenia from Russia is by air. Direct flights are operated by Pobeda, Aeroflot, S7, UTAir, Ural Airlines, VIM, Georgian Airways from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Sochi and other major Russian cities.
From Pobeda you can get tickets from Moscow to Gyumri for 999 rubles one way and for 2000 round trip - this is the cheapest and most convenient way to get to Armenia. You can take 10 kg of luggage with you. Of course, prices are higher in summer, but still cheaper than others.
For other airlines, the cost of tickets from Moscow to Armenia in winter and summer differs little; in the low season you can find them for 8,000 rubles round trip, and in summer tickets cost about 11 thousand rubles.
There are also direct flights from Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.
Find cheap flights to Armenia:
By train
It is impossible to get from Russia to Armenia by train. During the time of the union, a branch line operated through Adler-Abkhazia-Georgia, but now, due to the Abkhaz conflict, this line is not functioning along its entire length.
It is possible to get to Armenia by train from Georgia: Yerevan and Tbilisi are connected by one train, it takes a long time, but at night, so you can use it. In summer, there is a flight from Yerevan to Georgian Batumi.
By car or bus
Land borders are open only with Georgia and Iran. Armenia’s relations with Azerbaijan and Turkey, to put it mildly, are not very good, which is why all checkpoints are closed. The only way to Armenia from Russia is through Georgia.
There are three crossings between these countries in total; if you are traveling from Tbilisi to Yerevan, use the Sadakhlo/Bagratashen checkpoint, and if from Akhaltsikhe to Gyumri, use the Ninotsminda-Bavra checkpoint.
To enter Armenia by car you will need the following documents:
- rights
- registration certificate
- rental agreement if the car is rental
- upon entry and exit, a customs fee of 2000 drams is charged.
There are buses from many cities in southern Russia and Moscow to Yerevan, theoretically you can get there, but physically it is difficult: the journey from Moscow takes about 40 hours.
Trip to Armenia - where and when to go?
You can go to Armenia at any time of the year, depending on your goals. Temples and cultural heritage can be visited at any time of the year. In winter, you can have a great time at the Tsaghkadzor ski resort, and in the summer, go on excellent trekking in the mountains or climb the highest mountain in the country - Aragats.
But still, the best time to visit is mid-spring and autumn. In spring it is already warm, but not yet hot, nature blooms with bright colors, the slopes turn green and are covered with flowers. And in the fall, delicious peaches ripen. plums, grapes and other fruits are very cheap in the markets at this time. Moreover, in the fall it is no longer so hot.
Armenia is a small country, so the route consists of the following combinations:
Yerevan and surroundings (, Etchmiadzin,) - 3-5 days.
Trip to the south (Sisian) - 3-5 days.
If you wish, you can also travel around the northern part: Ijevan, Gyumri, Stepanavan.
Thus, 10-12 days is enough to leisurely enjoy your trip around Armenia.

Transport within the country
Many interesting places are remote from civilization, and public transport does not go there, so the best option is to come by your own car or take a taxi. Moreover, the cost of a taxi in Armenia is low - expect about 120-150 drams per km for the entire car.
You can easily rent a car - the cost is about $40 per day, and you can rent a four-wheel drive for $50. Recently, international car rental services have appeared in Armenia. Public taxis are also common, for example there are ones from Yerevan to Karabakh.
Public transport has deteriorated; mostly minibuses travel between cities, but they are cheap.
The railway line connects Yerevan and Tbilisi, passing through Gyumri and Vanadzor; in the summer, trains run to Lake Sevan. The train is an almost useless way to travel around Armenia.
Hitchhiking is very good, although there are some requests for money, but we never stopped for a long time. Public transport in Yerevan includes metro, buses, trolleybuses and minibuses, and travel around the city costs 100 drams.
Housing in Armenia
In general, the tourism infrastructure is not very developed, and a large selection of hotels/inns/hostels is only available in Yerevan. There is plenty of choice: very cheap hostels for 3,000 drams per night, modest hotels for 7,000 drams per room, and there are also comfortable, more expensive options.
You can rent an entire apartment in the capital - this will be the most comfortable option for families and large companies. Read more about - 10 good options.
In other cities, housing is represented mainly by old Soviet hotels and guest houses. I highly recommend staying in guest houses! This will give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in local life and customs. I stayed in a guesthouse in Tatev (near the monastery) - it turned out the owner lived in Omsk for 15 years! We talked all evening, the hosts treated me to delicious Armenian food, it was fun ;-) Locals can invite you to spend the night with them for free, subject to a certain level of your sociability.
Find cheap hotels in Armenia:
Money, cards
The currency of Armenia is called the dram, and all transactions in the country are carried out only in drams. It is most convenient to carry cash, although there are also ATMs in Yerevan and other cities, you can withdraw money there. Regardless of the currency of your account, the ATM will issue the amount in drams. Now they give 7.5 drams for one ruble, but check the current rates before traveling to Armenia.
Prices for groceries and food in cafes
Armenia is a very inexpensive country, everything here is cheaper than in Russia, except for goods brought from the Russian Federation. The hostel in Yerevan cost us $5 per person per night, including breakfast. City transport costs 100 drams (13 rubles), in Russia there have been no such prices for ten years. Intercity minibuses cost about 1.5 rubles per kilometer, that is, almost half as much as ours. A hearty meal for two in a cafe can easily cost 3,000 drams. We bought fruits and vegetables at the market and their cost at the end of summer was also very low, but how delicious they are! By the way, in cafes and restaurants a 10% tip is always included in the bill.
Communication and Internet
Making or receiving calls while roaming is quite costly, so buy a local SIM card right away. There are currently three mobile operators in Armenia: MTS VivaCell, Beeline, Orange. MTS and Beeline have approximately the same packages, and the quality of coverage, as far as I understand, is better in MTS. We took a SIM card for 1500 drams (1500 minutes on-net, 1 GB of internet, 150 SMS) and were satisfied. This is quite enough not only to access your email and social networks, but also to do a little work. Wi-Fi is available in almost all hotels/hostels around the country, as well as in some cafes in major cities. In general, there were no problems with this.
Food
The cuisine alone is worth a trip to Armenia! Meat-eaters, vegetarians, and those with a sweet tooth will love it here. Of course, be sure to go to the Ararat factory and try cognac (you can buy it there), as well as go to Areni and taste local wine. It’s hard to imagine Armenian cuisine without khorovats (kebabs), pita bread, cheese, dairy products, various snacks, such as minced pepper. I recommend trying dolma and zhengyalov-khats.
What to bring as a gift from Armenia?
First of all, everyone brings the famous cognac “Ararat”, “Noy” (there are other brands) and wine. Armenian craftsmen are famous for their products made of silver, precious stones, and ceramics. If your budget allows, you can purchase a real handmade carpet. A good souvenir would be Armenian sweets: homemade halva, boiled fruit juice - doshab, sujukh (analogous to churchkhela), dried fruits. You can also take cheese and dried herbs and spices from the products.
We are often asked how Russians are treated in this or that country? Well, we answer: in Armenia, Russians are loved and respected. Many fondly remember the years they spent in Russia, or indicate that their brother/husband/son is now working with us. Although the official language is Armenian, some speak Russian and certainly understand almost everything. We have the most pleasant memories from communicating with Armenians; this people is famous for its hospitality, and our trip to Armenia independently confirmed this!
The locals are quite religious, but they are calm about observing certain rituals. Women have equal rights with men, and it seemed to us that they feel quite free.
They will rarely try to deceive you, this was surprising for us, especially considering the general standard of living. They may quote an inflated price for a taxi, but you can and should bargain. Sometimes there are power outages; in Dilijan we had no light all evening. As a rule, there is no central heating in houses. Roads in Armenia leave much to be desired: while the Yerevan-Sevan-Dilijan highway is of good quality, the road south towards the Iranian border is narrow and full of potholes. The road towards Georgia from Vanadzor to the border is of the same poor quality.
If you get behind the wheel in Armenia, be careful - the locals drive recklessly, quickly, and do not particularly follow the rules.
Although in general everything is in order with security in Armenia. You just have to exercise reasonable caution, don’t flash large amounts of light, don’t walk through remote areas at night, and everything will be fine. And one more thing: if a girl travels alone, then they will probably show her signs of attention, trying to get to know each other. That's all. Have a great adventure in Armenia!
I decided to write an online guide to Armenia based on my trip. There is never too much useful information.
Below you will find answers to planning questions, where to live, how much money you need, whether you need a visa and how to get around, as well as the route around Armenia that we took. Based on it, you can make your own or use ours.
I am often asked: “Why go to Armenia, what to see there and is it even worth spending time and vacation on this country.” And now I answer without hesitation: “Of course it’s worth it!”
I’ll tell you a banal fact, but Armenia is the first country to adopt Christianity. Therefore, there will be no shortage of historical and architectural attractions here, even for experienced tourists.
In addition, it has stunning and diverse nature. The greenery of the north and colorful mountains in the south are worth coming here not for a weekend to see Yerevan, but for a full-fledged voyage around this country.
But nature and ancient monasteries are only half of the values of Armenia. People, ordinary Armenians, who stayed in their country and did not go to other countries, that’s why it’s also worth coming here. I’m not afraid of these pretentious statements, but the word “hospitality” was rediscovered for me.
And finally, Armenia is not yet as crowded with tourists as neighboring Georgia or Azerbaijan. It is absolutely possible to find yourself somewhere alone, in the silence of the mountains or monastery walls. Fortunately or unfortunately, the main tourists in Armenia are ethnic Armenians who came to see their homeland, and Chinese tourists who are just everywhere. But the Armenians do everything to make their guests feel comfortable and to make them come and return again and again. And it is true.
Well, the prices here are not high, for Russian salaries. You can afford a little more, and this is good news.
When is the best time to go to Armenia?
If you want to see the whole country in one trip, then the best time to travel to Armenia is summer, starting from June and ending in September. Juicy Armenian fruits are ripe, there are a lot of cheap vegetables, the snow in the mountains and on the passes has melted and does not create obstacles for inspection and travel.
You can just come for a walk around Yerevan on March 8th. It’s already quite warm, but you can still eat Armenian khash and warm up.
If you are interested in skiing, then you need to go to the Tsakhnadzor resort from December to February/March.
Going to Armenia in August is almost ideal. But during the day in Yerevan and in open areas in the surrounding areas: Garni, Eribuni or Zvartnots, it will be quite hot, but tolerable.
Documents, visa and do you need a passport to travel to Armenia?
Fortunately, the Armenians are our brothers, our army guards the border between Armenia and Turkey, and Russians do not need a visa to Armenia. And a foreign passport to Armenia is no longer needed either. However, it's a pity. After all, he was given a beautiful stamp upon arrival with Big and Small Ararat.
In addition to Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Georgians and other residents of the CIS also do not require a visa to Armenia. The length of stay should not exceed 180 days.
For the rest, it is charged upon arrival and costs 3,000 drams for 21 days or 15,000 drams for 120 days.
You can cross the Armenian border by land in Georgia and Iran, and you can fly by plane from any city with air connections (except Turkey and Azerbaijan).
Language in Armenia “And they will understand me”
Armenia quite recently ceased to be one country with us, so Russian may not be the second state language there, but it is the second, after Armenian. It is obligatory at school, the older generation jokes about “I also died in Russian school” and knows and speaks simply after the fact, and also many Armenians go to large Russian cities to work. But I still cannot answer unequivocally that you will be understood. In Yerevan, in a cafe in the center near the fountains, the young waiters only understood us in English. But in general there were no problems with understanding. After all, as the Armenians themselves say: “Putin is our president,” that’s why they learn Russian, one way or another.
The Armenian alphabet is very beautiful and is revered by the residents.
Religion in Armenia
In Armenia, the Christian Apostolic Church. Yes, they are Christians, but they have their own customs, which are somewhat different from our understanding of religion. For example, "matah".
In principle, you can come to churches and monasteries in shorts and a T-shirt. I have never seen anyone not allowed in or reprimanded. The Armenians themselves do not give the impression of being very devout and believers, but they often go to churches, even if they are walking or driving past and have time, why not go in and light a candle.
Armenians are Christians, but not like us
In churches there is usually one place where candles are placed. There is no difference between health here and peace elsewhere. You just put it up, and God will sort it out, something like that. They don’t put candles at different icons, again. But they don’t exist. They try to leave churches so as not to turn their backs on the icons.
Armenians are baptized as Catholics, from left to right, but this is due to the language and pronunciation of the words “In the name of the father, son and holy spirit.” The fact is that the Trinity must each fall into its place when you are baptized. The father is on the forehead, the son is on the stomach, and the word spirit is on the left shoulder. When this prayer is said in Armenian, the order of the words is slightly different. They say, not “the Holy Spirit,” but “the Holy Spirit.” It turns out that in order for the word “spirit” to fall on the left shoulder, you need to be baptized in the opposite direction.
I described my observations of life in the country in this article, it also contains a little about religion.
Money, what currency to travel with
The currency in Armenia is the Armenian dram and all payments are made only in local money. In addition to the souvenir market in Yerevan, here you can pay in rubles, and even at a mutually beneficial bank rate.
You can travel with rubles, euros or dollars, but you should not exchange rubles for them before the trip. You will lose more when exchanging back and forth. You can change money at exchange offices in Yerevan, or at banks in other cities.
You can also safely withdraw local drama from a ruble card at ATMs, and that’s what I did. The commission is the usual bank fee, you can check with your bank.
It is better to have cash everywhere, but sometimes in stores it is quite possible to pay with a card. Rarely, but possible.
If you rent a car, then at each parking lot you will be asked for 200 drams, to buy fruit, kebab or lavash to eat, to pay for entrance to the museum or for transport, you will need cash everywhere.
Food prices, how much money to take to Armenia
As I already said, Armenia is not yet so popular among tourists (but everything will change soon), so the prices are very, very attractive and encourage you to spend more.
I will write a separate article about prices in more detail, but in general, expect the following order:
You can find different types of housing in Armenia. It all depends on what you choose, a hostel in Yerevan and a guest house in the province, or a good hotel in Yerevan and a sanatorium in Jermuk. The average price tag for accommodation in a hostel/not an expensive but decent hotel is 10,000 drams for 3 people. We took beds in shared rooms in hostels, but in hotels the price tag is the same regardless of whether there are two or four. There will be a separate article about the hotels where we lived. I will write about the good ones and about those that turned out to be unsuccessful.
Eating traditional Armenian food in a cafe costs from $5. We often bought food and ate in apartments that we rented or in hostels, where there was always a kitchen. The cost of staying in a hostel almost always includes breakfast, sometimes very filling, such as pasta with sausages, fruit and coffee.
For example, eating a kebab with baked vegetables, pita bread, cheese, washing it all down with tan-okroshka and beer, which we bought to take away and ate by the river, cost 700 rubles for 4 and there was still left for breakfast. We also bought food in a store in Jermuk for dinner, vegetables, cheese, matsun, basturma, sweet gata and churchkhela, spending 700 rubles and again we still had a hearty dinner left. At the supermarket in Goris we also bought food for 500 rubles for 4 people and again it was enough for dinner and breakfast. If you eat in restaurants, prices will be from $5 and above per person.
Allow transport costs based on the type of transport. Car rental with a driver is 20,000 drams, without - from 15,000 drams. The cost of minibuses depends on the distance. You can get to everything further than the outskirts of Yerevan for 1500-2000 drams from bus stations and minibus parking lots.
Food in Armenia
Armenian cuisine is wonderful! If you take into account the fact that everything is prepared from seasonal and fresh products, then you can even evaluate the taste in absentia.
Vegetarians will have a harder time than meat eaters. But it’s more difficult to refuse and explain why you don’t eat meat. But the argument that you just feel sorry for the poor animals works, it’s been tested. And during the season from late May to September, the amount of vegetables and fruits will satisfy even the needs of raw foodists!

Housing in Armenia
Of course, to get a good price/quality option, you need to have a clear travel plan and not deviate from it. We had a route, but after we left Yerevan, it was not always possible to follow it, although we tried. Booking on the go, especially during the season, is difficult if you are on a budget. There are good and cheap ones (around 10 thousand drams for 2-3 people), but if you book in advance there are more chances. If we realized that we didn’t have time to arrive where it was already booked, then we simply opened a booking and booked from what was available. There were no fines for not showing up at a hotel that had already been booked, although it seemed like a cancellation one day before was already subject to a fine of min 1 night.
The choice of housing is large and varied only in Yerevan. Here you can find many hostels and apartments that are good and not expensive on Airbnb if you book in advance, and even more so hotels. But the price tags in the capital are decent. We preferred to spend the night in hostels.
There is not a large choice of housing in the province, but it is there. In Jermuk, we generally had to use the theory of 6 handshakes and, through our driver and calls, look for housing within 10,000 drams (this was our ceiling for housing, 500 rubles per person).
Communications in Armenia
You can choose different mobile operators, which ones you trust more. There are Beeline and MTS and Orange.
Do you need insurance in Armenia?
There is no such obligation for a trip to Armenia as insurance. No one will ask you for it at the border. However, it doesn’t hurt to have insurance if you plan to actively spend time in the country. Insurance is not expensive and it is better to have it if something happens.
I’m not talking about conquering peaks now, but even simple trekking in the national park in Dilijan or climbing rocks in gorges near Garni can have consequences.
I buy insurance online before every trip. I wrote about insurance for active recreation In this article.
How to get to Armenia
The most convenient way to get to Armenia is, of course, by plane. You can fly to Yerevan or Gyumri from Russia and Georgia. I have collected all the flights with the lowest prices In this article. There you will also find a calendar of flights to Armenia for the year ahead. It is very convenient to search for cheap tickets. Click on the month and it opens with flight prices by day.
You can also get to Armenia by car, through Georgia or Iran. But in winter it can be difficult to move along the Georgian Military Road through the passes; they are sometimes covered with snow. However, I considered the budget for such a trip from St. Petersburg, and if there are 3-4 people, then you can get there quite inexpensively, cheaper than by plane, if you don’t catch a cheap flight.
Route around Armenia
I can suggest our route around Armenia. Apart from visiting friends, it took us 7 days to see the maximum. Although it is possible to see everything at once in 10-14 days in the country, Armenia is not a country that you need to “run through”. Still, oriental leisureliness reigns here and you need to make stops along the way.
Important note. In my opinion, seeing the most of the country in a short time is only possible by car. Yes, there is public transport, it works, and there is also hitchhiking. But when you are limited in time, then a car is the best solution. If you do not drive yourself, then there is an option to rent a car with a driver.
You can start from Yerevan, or, if you are coming to Armenia from Georgia, then from the north from Alaverdi.
There is a separate detailed article for each place in the guide. Follow the turquoise link buttons if you want to learn more.
1 day
For the first 2 nights, feel free to book accommodation in Yerevan. Because the most visited places in the country are located near the capital and it is easier to return to the same place for the night. We lived in the Rafael hostel in the very center, not far from Vernissage and the singing fountains.
What see in Yerevan in one day?
If you are limited in time, then you can explore the capital of Armenia in one day, if quickly and briefly. We arrived in the afternoon and in half a day just walking around Yerevan we managed to visit Gregory's temple, reached Republic Square, walked around Northern Avenue, climbed the Cascade, looked at Yerevan at night and statue of mother Armenia in Victory Park.
In addition, the next day, having also spent half a day, we visited monument to the Armenian genocide, visited the souvenir market Vernissage, watched the evening singing fountain show on Republic Square. Here on the square there is museums of the history of Armenia and an art gallery. We didn't make it to the collection of manuscripts Matenadaran, but I’ll definitely go on my next visit. You can also visit Ararat Brandy Factory, if interesting.
If you're lucky, you can walk around Yerevan for 3-4 days and it's worth a separate trip for short weekend holidays. There are a lot of places in Yerevan that you can and should see. I personally recommend taking a guide and a personal tour. Then they will immediately bring you up to date, explain the peculiarities and local customs and simply tell you a lot of interesting things.
Day 2
Around Yerevan
In general, if you don’t have a lot of time to travel to Armenia, even traveling by public transport around Yerevan you can see a lot. And even though most of it has been reconstructed, which many people don’t like, you can still see monuments and temples that are many hundreds of years old.
Pagan Garni temple is located 30 km from Yerevan, and Geghard Monastery a little further, 40 km. If you rent a car, you have the opportunity to make a stop on the way to these monasteries near Arches of Charents. According to this Armenian poet (whom you can see on the 100 dram bill), this is the best view of Mount Ararat. If you are lucky and there is no haze.
We weren't lucky enough to see Masis, but the views are still worth a stop.
Although the Garni Temple is considered a remake, it is not so. And this is the most unusual temple in all of Armenia.
The monastery in the Geghard rock, despite the crowds of people, is impressive. It definitely cannot be excluded from the route around Armenia.
Former capital of Armenia Erebuni definitely worth a visit, especially if you are interested in the history of Armenia. A trip to Echmiadzin, the Armenian Vatican, is worth a look if you want to learn about the history of religion and understand Armenia. If I didn’t have a lot of time on my first visit, I wouldn’t have come here. But if you have a week and a car to rent, be sure to come. For Armenians, these places are the most real, authentic and important.
And I recommend ending the day in the Temple of the Vigilant Forces Zvartnots. Ararat can also be seen from here if the circumstances are successful.
Day 3
We're going South
In one daylight you can visit the monastery Khor Virap and see the most famous symbol of Armenia - Mount Ararat, which the Armenians call Masis. Find out that in Armenia there is not only cognac, but also they make delicious wine. And before bed drink mineral water in Jermuk straight from the waterfall.
If for some reason you don’t want to rent a car, even with a driver, then you won’t be able to see everything in one day ( about rent and transport read here). However, you can buy a tour in Yerevan and see everything except Jermuk, because the bus will return to Yerevan again.
4 day
You can see everything on our list for this day only by car. But for the first time you can choose the very best.
at very attractive prices. And you can finish your route around Armenia in this city.Day 8
Armenian alphabet – Amberd Fortress – Mount Aragats
On the way back to Yerevan from Gyumri or Alaverdi, you can, if you wish, stop by to look at. It was created not long ago, but is popular among locals and tourists.
If you have time, then go deeper into the mountains and look at the highest mountain in Armenia - Mount Aragats, and also visit Amberd fortress. If you have the desire, you can make a one-day climb up the mountain. In summer, although there is snow, there is not much of it. However, it is advisable to have at least minimal tour equipment for this. If you want to, but are scared, you can take a guide.
On this last day we visited only the monument to the Armenian alphabet, and in the evening we walked around the Vernissage in Yerevan. Early in the morning there was already a plane home. And although we saw a lot on this trip to Armenia, there are still quite a few blank spots where we want to go. And that's great.
Route map in Armenia
This is what our entire route around Armenia for 7 days looks like. If you open the map in full screen (the rightmost icon at the top), you can turn off layers and select movement for each specific day.
Transport in Armenia, how to get around
I will list all the ways of traveling around Armenia available to tourists:
Metro in Yerevan.
There is a place to be. Sometimes it is convenient, if you are limited in time, to get to a certain attraction in Yerevan. But as the locals say, sometimes it’s more convenient to take a taxi; it’s not at all expensive in the capital.
Rented car. Convenient, comfortable, fast. You are in complete control of your own time.
Rental prices start from $30 for a mechanic when booking in advance (for a day of rental when booking on the eve of the trip, the price tag can already be $50). Renting a car with an automatic transmission starts at $40, but on the eve of the trip you can fly by, economy models are disassembled in advance. For an SUV you will have to pay $50-70 per day, depending on the type of transmission.
It’s convenient to rent in, then you know exactly what you’re getting. There are also local rental offices on site, but it depends on your luck.
Car with driver. The price may be even cheaper than renting a car with an automatic transmission, especially if you book on the eve of the trip, and not much in advance. That's what happened to us. It’s convenient because you can hire a driver not for the entire period, but only for those days when you plan to travel around the country.
Almost all local cars run on gas and this results in savings on fuel, gas is much cheaper than gasoline, and all cars for rent run on gasoline. This service costs 20,000-25,000 drams for the whole day. You can bargain if you rent for many days. The driver himself finds where he will spend the night along the way and will help you find accommodation for the night if you do not book in advance.
Public transport. I have a large detailed article about transport in Armenia.
If you have a lot of time and don’t want to see the country in one visit, don’t have a license, or just want to save money, this is your way.
There are 5 places in Yerevan from which buses, minibuses and private transport depart in different directions. But the number of flights per day to other major cities may be 1-2. It is difficult to build a route with a large number of points in one day. Some attractions have no public transport routes at all.
Hitch-hiking. It works, the Armenians are very friendly in this regard and can hospitably give you a ride not only along the way, but also a little further. However, it works well only for short distances and getting to places like Noravank or Caravanserai is quite difficult, relying only on hitchhiking.

What souvenirs to bring from Armenia
The main souvenir market Vernissage is located in Yerevan. It is difficult to guess who to bring what souvenir without knowing the person, but various Armenian motifs are very popular among tourists.
A grinder for spices and coffee; the coffee itself in Armenia is also good, finely ground, ideal for brewing in a Turk, and I also brought it for amateurs. And if I had my wish, I would bring copper utensils!
Letters of the Armenian alphabet. The best ones were in Dilijan; I didn’t find them at Vernissage later, but there were others.
All kinds of ceramics with symbols of Armenia, Ararat and pomegranate.
Duduk, also a symbol of Armenia, will be an excellent gift for a lover of musical instruments.
Chess! In Armenia, chess is taught in school as a regular subject from the 1st grade.
Sweets! Churchkhela and sweet gata.
Of course, Ararat and Noah cognac. They are available in duty free and you can’t find them separately in the city. True, at the airport there are only large bottles.
If you have money and interest, then you can buy a carpet or a small rug, both for the floor and for the table. Armenian motifs in carpet knitting are as unique as the designs on khachkars.
This guide is the author's own and does not pretend to be ideal. However, I have personally gone through everything mentioned in the article and I assure you that everything is more than possible and accessible. If for some reason you copy it to your site, ask me for permission.
The guide will be updated as new information becomes available. I haven’t told you everything about Armenia that I know yet. Come back!
The online guide will help you quickly plan a vacation in Armenia and an independent trip to this cozy country.
Below is the optimal route around Armenia for one week and answers to the FAQ.
It’s easy to spontaneously go to Armenia for the weekend.
No visa required for 180 days, and Russian citizens won’t even need a foreign passport.
3 hours in the air from Moscow, and before you is the wonderful world of the Caucasus.
You can spend 1-2 weeks on vacation in Armenia. There is no sea in the country, but there is Lake Sevan.
First mountains, mountains, and then crayfish, whitefish and trout on the shores of the “Armenian sea” with a glass of red pomegranate to the tunes of duduk. Who would refuse this?

💚 Why go to Armenia?
Armenians are kind, apricots are delicious, nature is luxurious.
Traveling through Armenia is a kind of pilgrimage from one monastery to another, passing through the red, yellow, green, black and white slopes of the mountains.
Armenia is bright, contrasting and a little sad. The country seems to be created for romantics.
💰Prices in Armenia
Prices in Armenia are affordable. Entrance to the monasteries is free, only museums and cable cars cost money.
Average daily travel budget for two Human:
25-40$ (1700-2600rub) per day for two: hostels/guest houses, cook ourselves, ride minibuses/hitchhike.
50-60$ (3300-4000r) per day for two: mediocre apartments/hotels, cafes, minibuses.
90-120$+ (6-8000 RUR) per day for two: apartments/hotels, cafes, car rental ( 30$+ per day car rental + 15$ per day gasoline) or excursions/taxi for out-of-town trips.
250-300$ (16-20,000 rubles) per day for two: 5* hotels, restaurants, to the mountains by jeep or with individual excursions.
We multiply this amount by the number of days of travel and add the cost of air tickets. This turns out to be the price of a holiday in Armenia for two people.
If you are completely budget traveler, plan to live in a tent or hostels for 5$ , hitchhike, eat apricots from someone else’s garden, you will be able to travel around Armenia and 10$ per day or completely free.
For the first time, my friend and I rode minibuses and lived in guest houses. It came out according to 150$ per person per 7 days for everything except air tickets. My cheapest trip ever. And the most heartfelt thing. But we saw little on foot. The next time we came together, m+f, rented apartments and modest hotels, rented a car and spent $1000 for two behind 10 days excluding air tickets.

🏠 Housing in Armenia
Housing in Yerevan It's better to book in advance. The city is big, there are plenty of tourists (there are many Iranians and Armenians living abroad).
Bed in a hostel 5-10$ per person, simple hotel or apartment 30-50$ + (2000-3000 rubles)/day.
Hotels and guest houses in the province You can book in advance if the travel route is known, so as not to waste precious time searching.
Guest House in the provinces (usually this is a room in a local house, the toilet is shared) - 5000 drams ( 10$ ) per person or 10,000 drams ( 20$ ) for two without meals.
Hotel in the province from 15,000 drams ( 30$ ), for breakfast they ask additionally 2-3000 drams ( 4-6$ ).
If you are traveling by car without clear plans, you can look for accommodation locally.
When we traveled by car and didn’t know where we would spend the night, closer to sunset we opened a booking and looked at where there were hotels or guesthouses nearby. We went where there were good reviews.
On the spot, the price after bargaining turned out to be the same as the price on the booking, so there is not much economic benefit in looking for an overnight stay on the spot.
🚜 Transport
There are several ways to get around Armenia:
▫ Your own car, if you don’t plan to leave the main roads and go deeper into the mountains (the roads in Armenia are so-so)
▫ Rented car from 27$ per day + gasoline. We rented through Hyundai getz for 10 days. A jeep is not needed from March to October.
▫ Taxi with driver– prices depend on distance. For half a day you can pay as 25$ , so 40$ . Per day they usually ask from 60-70$
▫ Hitch-hiking in Armenia is good, but it is difficult to get to some attractions by foot, because they are located in the mountains away from the main roads.
▫ Minibuses– cheap, but long.
😈 About minibuses in Armenia
There is nothing wrong with minibuses, but there are some nuances:
- The schedule is constantly changing; transport runs over long distances as it becomes full.
- Not only the schedule changes, but also the departure location. If yesterday the minibus went to Goris from the Kilikia bus station (outskirts of Yerevan), today it can depart from the railway station.
- In Armenia there is no concept of maximum vehicle capacity. If you think one seat is for one person, forget this outdated stereotype. Three people can comfortably sit on one seat, and the rest will sit on the floor or on their trunks (in the minibus, everyone has a trunk, or even two).
- If you choose a minibus or bus, be prepared for long waits, stops, and passengers with a huge amount of luggage. Sometimes it's fun. Sometimes it gets tiring.
- Sometimes a Miracle happens! Transport arrives on time, passengers do not ask to stop, do not run around to smoke and buy pita bread, do not carry bags of potatoes with them, the minibus travels quickly. It all depends on luck, on the driver and on the people.
Yerevan-Tatev road
Roads of Armenia
If the goal is to see as many interesting places as possible in a short period of time, then you need to move around Armenia by car.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s your rented car, a taxi with a driver, a sightseeing bus, or a Lada that you catch while hitchhiking in Armenia.
The point is that by car you can see places that minibuses don’t go to.
But they don’t go to the most important attractions (for example, to the Tatev cable car or to the Noravank monastery).
In most cases, from the minibus stop you need to either walk along 5-8 km, or take a taxi. Take this point into account when planning your time.
To see the country in a short period of time (4-7 days), you need a car in Armenia.
☝️Driving in Yerevan
Armenians behave decently on the road. From the amazing:
- At every step in Yerevan there are cameras recording any violations. If you look at the map in your navigator, there are probably more cameras in the city than traffic lights.
- Along with the cameras, there can be 5 traffic police cars at every hundred meters.
- The fine for locals for any violation is 5000 drams ( 10$ ), they charged us 10,000 drams ( 20$ ) for driving incorrectly around the roundabout.
The rented car we rode in
You don't need a jeep if you're driving on the highway.
What to see in Armenia
We don’t know you personally, my dear reader, so I can’t predict your interests and expectations.
But I can tell you what I like and how I would plan my travel route around Armenia if I were going there for the first time.
Prices for hotels and apartments
Below I will provide a couple of links to hotels, hostels or apartments in Yerevan that are optimal in terms of price, quality, reviews, and location.
🏠 Hostel in Yerevan 5-10$ per person. Examples of hostels in Yerevan ↓
Day 4. Lake Sevan
Having seen the beauty of the south of Armenia, I would head to Lake Sevan along the road through the Selim Pass.
Day 5-6. North of Armenia
After Lake Sevan you can go to the ski resort Tsakhkadzor resort(in summer the ski lifts also work) or in sunny Dilijan, where the cleanest and tastiest water in the world is.
You can see monasteries not far from Dilijan Haghartsin and Goshavank, Russians Old Believers villages Fioletovo and Lermontovo.
Day 7. Mount Aragats
It's time to return to Yerevan, and on the way stop by Mount Aragats and Alphabet Park.
Best month to visit Armenia
Holiday season in Armenia with April to October. If you want warmth, fly during these months.
May June And September-middle Oct November is the most comfortable month for sightseeing in Armenia. It’s warm, the roads are open, there’s no snow in the mountains, transport runs regularly, you can get to anywhere in the country.
IN July-August peak of tourism, in Yerevan the heat is +30+35C, but in the mountains it is sunny +25C.
There is a ski resort called Tsaghkadzor. For the sake of skis come with December to February.
Spring comes to Armenia in March, at the end of March lilacs are already blooming, but after spring winter may come again with snowfalls, especially in the mountains in the south.
Winter. Traveling around Armenia from November to March, you constantly freeze in hotels. There is no central heating; the apartments have air conditioners, boilers and radiators.
Cheap guest houses have heaters. You sleep under three blankets, hugging bottles filled with boiling water.
In May-June or September-October it is much more comfortable.

Answers to FAQ
🇦🇲Language of Armenia
In Armenia they speak Armenian language. Most residents of the country speak Russian or English.
In the villages in the south, some people speak only Armenian, but even there there are those who understand Russian.
🇦🇲 Visa to Armenia
To visit Armenia, visa for citizens of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine need not for 180 days.
Russians can fly to Armenia using a Russian passport or a foreign passport.
At the border they put it in foreign free stamp.
🇦🇲 Azerbaijan stamps in passport
If before visiting Armenia, you have been to Azerbaijan, this fact is not an obstacle to entry into Armenia.
A little more difficult if after Armenia is planning a trip to Azerbaijan on the ground. According to reviews, if Azerbaijani border guards notice Armenian stamps in a passport, they may ask questions about the purpose of the trip.
If after visiting Armenia you fly to Azerbaijan by plane, most likely no problems will arise.
It makes more sense to plan your trip in such a way as to visit Azerbaijan first, and only then Armenia.
If you are planning a trip to three countries of Transcaucasia, the optimal route is this:
🇦🇲 Currency of Armenia
Armenian dram (AMD)
1€ = 534 AMD
1$ = 477 AMD
1 Russian ruble = 7.6 AMD
1 hryvnia = 19 AMD
1 BYN (Belarusian ruble) = 236 AMD
🇦🇲 What currency should I use to travel to Armenia?
WITH dollars, rubles or Euro. Any of the three currencies can be easily exchanged for drams. If you only have rubles, take them.
There is no point in exchanging rubles for dollars in Russia in order to exchange dollars for drams in Yerevan. The benefit, if any, will be insignificant.
Currency exchange rates in different banks, as well as exchange offices and ATMs closest to you can be found on rates.am
Bank cards are accepted in most shops and restaurants in Yerevan. It’s better to go to the provinces with cash, or even better, with drams, so as not to look for exchange offices and banks in small towns.
🇦🇲 Insurance for Armenia
Travel insurance is not required for a holiday in Armenia. If you are planning to buy, then ☞
🇦🇲 Communications and Internet in Armenia
Communications in Armenia are cheap. In the very center of Yerevan on Northern Avenue there is:
MTS open from 9.00 to 18.00, coordinates 40.183878, 44.514696 , address: 6 Northern Ave, Yerevan
Beeline open from 10am to??, coordinates 40.184154, 44.514717 , address: 4 Northern Avenue, Yerevan
We took a SIM card with unlimited internet from Beeline for 200 dram($0.4) per day.
🍲 Food in Armenia
Food prices are affordable. You can have lunch for two for $5-10 in a cafe and for $15 in a restaurant.
Try pomegranate wine, matsoni, walnut, pumpkin, and zucchini jam. Dolma, cheeses, whitefish kebab in Sevan, flatbread with herbs Zhengyalov Khats in Goris.
Tap water in Yerevan is delicious, you can safely drink it.
Examples of prices in a cafe (divide by 8 to get rubles):
🇦🇲 Breakfast in hotels
When I read reviews about Armenian hotels, dissatisfaction with breakfast is a red line. Moreover, this does not depend on the price of the hotel. So, what to prepare for:
Just breakfast in hotels in Armenia: bun and coffee.
Great breakfast: pita bread, boiled eggs, jam or marmalade, butter, cheese, tea, coffee.
Breakfast can either be already included in the price, or paid separately 2-3000 drams ( 4-6$ ).
Is it possible to get your own breakfast for this money? Yes. For example, go to Tasher for pizza and eat for 2$ per person or buy pastries and coffee in one of the many cafes.
This is a very good breakfast for Armenia
👀 Security in Armenia
People in Armenia are kind and sympathetic, they readily help guests, invite them home, treat them, and often for free.
Alone or with a friend, it is comfortable and safe in Armenia if you travel around Yerevan and the surrounding area.
But as a girl, I wouldn’t go to the south of Armenia alone, although I know girls who hitchhiked alone and were satisfied.
In the southeast (in the area of Goris, Sisian, Tatev), some people still have prejudices in their heads that a woman should travel accompanied by her husband.
It is better to save short skirts and shorts for the city. In the mountains here the men are serious, ardent and principled. Light, loose clothing can be perceived as coquetry and a desire to have fun.
Well, if you are in a short dress, “old” (over 20), unmarried (no ring), and traveling alone or with a girlfriend, then you are looking for adventure, so there is no shame in offering you these same adventures.
Misunderstandings may arise with the harsh mountaineers. No, they will not offend or blatantly pester you. They can flirt.
Everything I remembered seemed to be told. Have a happy trip and holiday in Armenia!
I wish you to meet the Armenian mouflon!
