Fuerteventura Canary Island. Is it worth going to Fuerteventura? Corralejo - Sahara sand dunes and beaches
Located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 100 kilometers from the northwestern coast of Africa. Area – 1,659.74 km², population – 103,167 people (2008).
The island got its name from the wind blowing it from all sides: in Spanish, wind is “el viento”, and “fuerte” means “strong”.
Scientists believe that Fuerteventura is the oldest island of the Canary archipelago, formed as a result of volcanic eruptions that occurred in ancient times. The island is now largely deserted, although in the past it was covered with dense forests, which were eventually cut down to build the ships of the Spanish fleet.
Fuerteventura's many kilometers of wide and mostly deserted sandy beaches are considered the best in the Canaries, and the steady wind has made the island a world famous windsurfing center.
Tourism here is not yet as developed as in Gran Canaria or Tenerife, but this is rather one of the advantages of this island, especially for those who prefer a calm atmosphere of relaxation, instead of crowded resorts with always crowded beaches.
Most of the existing tourism infrastructure is concentrated in the south of the island - on the Jandía peninsula.
Symbols and integral parts of Fuerteventura's landscapes are goats, whose images are crowned with the bumpers of many local cars, and windmills, symbolizing wealth and prosperity.
On the one hand, tourist Fuerteventura is an ideal place for a calm and measured holiday, and on the other hand, it is one of the best places in the archipelago for water sports.
The capital of the island is Puerto del Rosario

There are several dozen beaches on the island, but three of them are of greatest interest: Sotavento is the longest, Playa Cofete is the “wildest” and with strong waves, Corralejo is the most beautiful.
All beaches on the island are municipal and free. You will only have to pay for sunbeds - 2-4 € for the whole day, umbrellas - 2-3? and, as a rule, for a shower on the beach. And then, all this can only be near hotels, and on remote areas of the coast all this is absent.

My report on Fuerteventura
The longest of all the islands of the Canary archipelago is constantly expanding its infrastructure and is being built up with numerous hotels and shops. This trend is associated with the growing popularity of holidays in this picturesque corner in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, which, apparently, will soon turn into a tourist center filled with guests from all over the world. Perhaps, in the near future, only colorful old mills will remind of the former tranquility in Fuerteventura.
The island's only airport (Aeropuerto de Fuerteventura) is located near the capital of Fuerteventura - Puerto del Rosario. Read more about the airport and how to get there.

The flora on the island is rather sparse: here you can see various types of succulents and milkweed, aloe vera, agave, and date palms. At the same time, the fauna of Fuerteventura is extremely diverse; this piece of land is home to birds such as bustard, osprey, vulture, little egret, as well as wild mammals, including rabbits, bats, hedgehogs and others. Another amazing resident of the island is the rare monarch butterfly.
Fuerteventura Island (photo: Rainer Höfkes)
A unique feature of all the islands of the Canary archipelago is that the beach season on their territory lasts all year round. Fuerteventura is no exception, where even in the coldest month of the year, i.e. January, the temperature does not drop below +20 ° C, and in the shade and not in the sun.
It is comfortable to swim and sunbathe on the island at any time of the year, without having to worry about severe overheating. The air temperature on the hottest summer days reaches no more than +27 °C in the shade, and low humidity levels and a fresh breeze that blows across the entire island help to bear the heat. As for the water temperature, it is about +20 ± 2 °C almost all year round.
An important climatic feature of Fuerteventura is the not strong, but constantly blowing wind. The island is characterized by a low landscape; the height of the mountain ranges located on it is no more than a kilometer. Mountains of such heights do not block clouds, so the island has virtually no precipitation and no distinct climatic zones (like Tenerife or Gran Canaria).
Beaches of Fuerteventura
The island is famous for its large number of long deserted beaches, which are rightfully considered the real treasure of Fuerteventura. Almost 100 kilometers of the island’s coast are occupied by magnificent beaches with light sand (Playa la Clavellina, Playa de Esquinzo, Playa Marfolin), and 25 kilometers are strewn with black volcanic rock (La Pared, Playa de Ajuy). Particularly popular among windsurfers are the little-developed beaches of Playa Corralejo and Playa Cofete. Quite a strong wind constantly blows in these places, which makes them less popular among ordinary tourists.
Ajuy Beach (photo: Els)
On the eastern side of Fuerteventura is Sotavento, a 30-kilometer-long beach that is divided into several parts. Every year the World Windsurfing Championship takes place in Sotavento. Fans of deep-sea fishing have chosen the areas of Morro del Jable and Playa de Corralejo, and divers have chosen the strait between Fuerteventura and Lobos Island.
And yet, of the many beaches in Fuerteventura, Playa Corralejo is considered the most beautiful, Playa Cofete is the wildest, and Playa Sotavento is the largest.
Main resorts of Fuerteventura
The main resorts of Fuerteventura are Careta del Fustes and Corralejo, as well as those located on the Jandia Peninsula - Costa Calma, Solana Matorral and Morro Jable.
Jandia

Peninsula Jandia famous for its magnificent white sand beaches, in addition, this place is home to the highest point of Fuerteventura - the 807-meter peak of Pico de Zarza. Jandia, adjacent to the island on the south side, is its most popular resort. Tourists from all over the world come to the peninsula for a peaceful holiday in the lap of nature.
Corralejo
Corralejo (photo: Anik Messier)
It is one of the largest resorts in Fuerteventura, but this does not prevent the residents of the town from leading a very calm and measured lifestyle. At the same time, Corralejo is considered a more modern and party resort than Jandia. A large number of people always relax on the coast of the city; the most attractive for tourists is the southern part of Corralejo, where there is a luxurious 10-kilometer beach.
Castillo Caleta de Fuste
Caleta de Fuste (photo: Stanisław A. (StasioA))
Castillo Caleta de Fuste, which is also called El Castillo, is located a very short distance from the only airport on the island, which largely determines its popularity among tourists. The resort is the third largest in Fuerteventura, located in the eastern part of the island. Unlike the coastline of other villages, the beaches of Caleta de Fuste are quite rocky. However, those who like to sunbathe and swim can do this on a safe artificial beach, which is equipped in the town itself. The coastline around the bay is reliably protected from waves, making it an ideal place for families with children.
In all resort villages of the island, special diving schools are organized, because the nature of this place is ideal for practicing this sport. Also in Fuerteventura you can practice golf to your heart's content on courses specially equipped for this game. In addition, an underwater photography competition is organized on the island every year.

How can I save up to 20% on hotels?
It’s very simple - look not only on booking. I prefer the search engine RoomGuru. He searches for discounts simultaneously on Booking and on 70 other booking sites.
Every time I think about what freedom is, the image of sails floating across the sky - kitesurfers from Fuerteventura - appears before my eyes. This is one of the most beautiful and most amazing places in the world. We have been there twice and, to be honest, we want to return there every year.
Fuerteventura is one of the islands of the Canary archipelago, which is very different from its fellows. There are few local residents, not too many tourists, and the nature remains deserted and untouched in a Martian way, striking in grandeur, restraint and giving a feeling of amazing loneliness - not sad, but the one that we all so need: fulfilling loneliness with ourselves. Nowhere in the world did I have the feeling that you were on another planet. And it was in Fuerteventura.
Although there are, of course, inhabited cities, incredibly beautiful beaches, and all the signs of modern European civilization, the endless expanse of bald volcanic mountains and the same endless expanse of the blue Atlantic Ocean are the main things that remain in the memory.
How to get there
Despite the fact that the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura together with them are the territory of Spain, geographically they belong to Africa. Fuerteventura is located just 100 kilometers from the African coast and lies on the same level as the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean. Therefore, the most convenient (and for many, the only) way to get here is by plane.
If you have time, you can come here by ferry, including bringing your own car or by bus, but only some tourists choose this option.
By plane
There is only one airport in Fuerteventura, it is located in the capital of the island - Puerto del Rosario.
There are no direct flights from Moscow or St. Petersburg. It is most profitable to fly with a transfer in Madrid or Barcelona, especially if you buy tickets from low-cost airlines (for example, a three-hour flight from Madrid to the island cost us only 50 EUR per person in both directions). You can fly from Germany very cheaply (or). On our second trip, we flew from Munich and a five-hour flight cost us 45 EUR per passenger round trip. Of course, we are talking about flights without meals and luggage, as is often the case with low-cost airlines.
Well, getting to Germany or Spain is not at all difficult; there are several flights a day from both capitals. You just need to choose the one that suits the price. For example, taking a round-trip ticket for 200 EUR is more than realistic.
If you don’t want to bother and create a cheap route yourself, you can simply buy a ready-made ticket with a transfer, although it will cost much more: from 500 EUR.
Current ticket prices can be viewed.
Another option is to fly to (Tenerife is also part of the Canary Islands) and from there get to Fuerteventura.
The capital of the island (but not all of the Canary Islands) is located almost in the center of the east coast of Fuerteventura. The airport is small on the outside, but inside it turns out to be unexpectedly spacious, deserted and very beautiful. It’s especially impressive when the plane comes in for landing: the ocean! And the runway itself is located right on the shore - amazing.
How to get there from Fuerteventura airport
Most tourists do not stop by the capital, but go straight to either the south of the country or the north. To leave the airport, you can take bus number 3, which goes to the Puerto del Rosario bus station and leaves every half hour. The fare costs 1.40 EUR, and from the station you can go to any corner of the island.
For those traveling south - to the Jandai Peninsula and the city of Morro del Jable - it is convenient to use route No. 10, it calls at the airport, so you can go without transfers. True, he only walks 4 times a day.
But the most convenient way, of course, is to take a taxi. The parking lot is located right at the exit from the airport; they will tell you which car to take, since all the taxis here are official and they have a certain queue. The cars are white with a red stripe, the drivers are friendly and pleasant, and travel costs approximately 1-1.50 EUR per kilometer. The driver will most likely be able to give you an approximate cost, but in any case, payment is made according to the meter. A trip to the northern resort of Corralejo will cost 35-40 EUR, and to the southern resort of Morro Jable - about 90 EUR.
For those planning to rent a car, you can do it right at the airport or pre-order a car for your arrival. It's convenient and profitable. I will tell you more about renting a vehicle below.
By train
Fuerteventura, like the other islands of the archipelago, does not have a railway.
By bus
From Russia it is very difficult to get to Fuerteventura by bus. In theory, you can consider the crazy option of driving to the Spanish town of Cadiz, then taking a ferry to the islands. But in practice, I doubt the feasibility of such a plan.
But buses are becoming the main way to travel within the island.
By car
Exactly the same can be said about a car. It is almost impossible to get here by car. It is much more convenient to rent a vehicle on the spot.
By ferry
If you love sea travel and cruises, then you can consider this option:
- get to Spanish Cadiz on your own;
- go by ferry to Gran Canaria or Tenerife, the ferry takes about two days to both islands, but it is better to choose the first one, since from there it is closer to Fuerteventura;
- take the ferry to Morro Jable (takes about 120 minutes). Ticket costs from 30 EUR.
It is worth remembering that we are talking about the Atlantic Ocean, where the waves are always quite strong. Therefore, those who suffer from seasickness are unlikely to enjoy such a trip.

When is the season? When is the best time to go
Fuerteventura is also good because you can relax here all year round. The Canaries are generally called the islands of eternal spring due to the fact that it is always warm and sunny here, but there is no sweltering heat.
And despite the fact that among local residents, especially in big cities, it is customary to dress warmly in winter, tourists enjoy sunbathing and swimming in any season.
The proximity to the mainland also has its effect - Fuerteventura is warmer than other islands. But it’s worth remembering that even the name of the island comes from the phrase “strong wind,” so winds from the ocean always blow here.
Fuerteventura in summer
Summer is the hottest period, the temperature rises higher and reaches +28...+30°C. At this time there is no rain at all, and the water in the ocean warms up to its maximum. However, it does not become warm, “like fresh milk”. Swimming in the Atlantic is fresh even in the warmest months.
In summer, the resorts have the most tourists.
Fuerteventura in autumn
During the autumn months, little changes at first, but towards the end of October the temperatures begin to drop and there are periodic rains. By November the air has warmed up to +26°C, and you can still swim everywhere.
Due to the strong wind, it can be chilly in the evenings; a jacket may come in handy. During the day it's real summer!
Fuerteventura in spring
Spring on the island is a wonderful time. It’s getting warmer (up to +26°C), even in the evening you can walk without a jacket, and the water in the ocean is gradually warming up. Already at the very beginning of March, by our standards, it’s real summer here.
Add to this the blooming of everything that can bloom - and you have the perfect time to relax. Very rarely there may be short periods of rain, but generally there is a dry period.
Fuerteventura in winter
During the cold season, Fuerteventura is not cold at all! During the day, the air temperature stays around +25°C; in the evening it can drop to +18°C. The ocean water is cold, but quite suitable for swimming.
During this period, it is better to go to the southern resorts of the Jandia Peninsula; in the northern part of the island it is a little cooler.
We were in Fuerteventura in January and on the border of February and March. Both trips were memorable for the sun, although in January it rained periodically, but for us - St. Petersburgers - it was almost unnoticeable.
Another plus of a winter trip is the minimum number of tourists.

Conditional areas. Descriptions and features
Fuerteventura can be roughly divided into five districts:
- The south of the island is the Jandia Peninsula, yellow on the map;
- Central East Coast, blue on map;
- North of the island - from Puerto del Rosario to El Cotillo, green on the map;
- West Coast, blue on map;
- Interior of the island, pink on the map.
What are the prices for holidays?
The entire island is cut by gorges and is very beautiful; climbers adore it. Interesting to see:
- San Sebastian de la Gomera is a port where ferries arrive in 35 minutes from;
- the resort of Playa de Santiago, where there is no bad weather;
- Valle Gran Rey - mountain slopes decorated with terraces and palm groves;
- the pedestrian village of La Calera;
- the medieval village of Agulo;
- Garajonay National Park.
Palm
Palma - This island is called by locals the Green Island (Isla Verde) because about 40% of the surface is occupied by forests.
There is a quiet, calm atmosphere here, which is conducive to a measured and comfortable rest. Be sure to visit:
- Santa Cruz de la Palma is one of the best examples of Spanish colonial architecture;
- Los Tilos Biosphere Reserve;
- the very beautiful village of San Andres, surrounded by banana plantations;
- the large city of Los Llanos de Aridane;
- El Paso, where silkworms were once bred and silk was made;
- the fantastically beautiful village of Las Manchas, miraculously not damaged by a volcanic eruption in the middle of the last century;
- resort town of Los Cancajos;
- Mazo is a picturesque village surrounded by vineyards.
Hierro
Hierro (El Hierro) is the westernmost and most secluded island of the archipelago.
The most convenient way to get here is by plane, and the number of hotel beds barely exceeds 1.5 thousand. This small island is worth a visit:
- Valverde is the only Canarian capital located not on the ocean, but in the interior of the island;
- the pretty village of Guinea - one of the oldest settlements on the island;
- numerous observation platforms on the mountains.
Nearby Islands
Near Fuerteventura there is a tiny island called Isla de Lobos or Los Lobos. This is a nature reserve with an area of 6 square kilometers, in which you will find several small, cozy lagoons, and there you can also see the habitats of migratory birds (this area is strictly forbidden to enter), and small hornitos craters. From time to time they come into an active state and then steam escapes underground.
There are several walking routes around the island, they lead to the old lighthouse and to the top of the mountain. It is impossible to get lost there, as the trails are well marked and there are signs everywhere. At the same time, it will take about 2-2.5 hours to get around the island.
You can get here by small boat from the port of Corralejo.
Food. What to try
Due to the climate and geographical location, Fuerteventura's cuisine is quite simple. Fish is often used, and sauces are also popular.
Many dishes are served with traditional side dishes " gofio" (gofio), is a fine grain mixture made using toasted flour. Eg, " Gofio Amasado" (gofio amasado) is made from classic gofio, water, milk, broth, honey or wine and served in the so-called "zurrón" - a leather or fabric bag (more traditional version) or a large saucepan (modern version). Bread made from a mixture of wheat and barley flour is often offered with gofio.
It's also interesting to try " Papas Arrugadas"(papas arrugadas) are very small potatoes baked with a lot of salt. It is served with traditional hot sauce " mojo picon" (mojo picon).
But the real masterpiece of Fuerteventura cuisine is considered cheeses. Of course, goats. Incredibly delicious!
Fish and seafood are especially interesting pejines- tiny fish, like sardines or anchovies, that are dried in the sun and then baked, fried or cooked over a fire. Clams, mussels, crabs, shrimp, and lobsters are popular. Soups are also prepared from fish.
It’s worth mentioning separately Canarian sauces mojo. The two most popular types of sauces are red and green - mojo rojo and mojo verde, respectively. Red sauces are spicier, and mojo picon is the spiciest of them all. Another type of sauce is salmorejo, which is moderately spicy and suitable for different types of dishes.
Dessert on the island there are also very unusual ones: rice puddings, dairy desserts, sweets with pineapples, almonds and meringues, cheese puddings, which use the already familiar goat cheese and much more.
Features of mentality
Residents of Fuerteventura are reserved and, at first glance, even closed people, but they are friendly and welcoming, always happy to help tourists, but have sufficient self-respect to demand appropriate treatment.
By tradition, all the indigenous peoples of the Canary Islands are called "Guanches", although technically the Mahorers lived on Fuerteventura. However, all these people (by the way, the word Guanches translates as “man”) were close to the African Berbers both ethnically and linguistically. After the Spanish conquest, the inhabitants quickly became “Hispanicized,” intermarriage produced lighter-skinned men and women, and the Spanish language finally replaced the ancient Guanche dialects.
The main mystery of the Guanches is that it is completely unclear where they came from. It is believed that they could not sail from Africa, since they had practically no fleet, only reed boats, on which it was simply impossible to travel a hundred kilometers across the ocean. At one time, scientists even put forward the theory that these were inhabitants of the sunken Atlantis.
One way or another, a special type of people has formed on the islands, which is very different from the mainland Spaniards; both African and Latin American influences are clearly visible in them and in their culture.
Nowadays, the morals of the residents of Fuerteventura are quite strict, but adjusted for modernity. And what I like most is that no one here imposes their point of view on lifestyle and culture on anyone. Complete freedom: everyone lives as he pleases. And local residents are very tolerant and friendly towards representatives of all cultures, religions and other social groups.
Residents of the island love Fuerteventura and talk warmly about their homeland. They are unlikely to share personal details with you, but they will tell you about interesting places on the island with great pleasure.
We were simply fascinated by the locals: hospitable and welcoming, but very tactful and delicate. Introverted travelers will feel comfortable here!
Holidays
The most interesting holidays and festivals in Fuerteventura are those that go back to ancient times. Every city, even the smallest one, must have a patron saint in whose honor a church was built and whose day is celebrated with honor by the entire city. As a rule, the festival is a festive procession decorated with flags and flowers, music is played, and traditional songs are sung.
- The most popular holiday on the island is Carnival. It takes place in February and covers almost all the cities of the island, but the main celebrations await guests in Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal.
- Another type of festive event, close in essence to pilgrimage, is the so-called romeria. The two most popular processions are the Virgen de la Pena, which honors Fuerteventura's main saint, and El Tanquito, when residents carry a statue of the Virgin Mary on their shoulders and place it on the mountain at the end of the route.
- Every year on July 16, two cities - Corralejo and Morro del Jable - also host Virgen del Carmen processions. At this time, both resorts are always full of tourists, so the festival becomes truly bright and joyful. The statue of the Virgin is displayed on the shore; this is a great holiday for sailors and fishermen.
- Of course, more traditional holidays are celebrated here - New Year and Christmas, and between them on December 28 they have fun on Simpleton's Day, this is something like our April 1, only the jokes here are usually even larger: they say that the local media always play pranks on residents, for example , report "news" about the arrival of high-ranking guests or celebrities, ensuring that half the city can gather near the port in anticipation of the star's arrival.
Safety. What to watch out for
Fuerteventura is a very calm place, you feel comfortable and safe here. However, in big cities you should adhere to the usual rules: do not leave valuables unattended and keep an eye on your wallet, phone and camera. Girls without men can walk completely calmly, including at night.
As for living beings, everything here is also quite good: there are no poisonous plants, no ferocious animals or insects. Goats and donkeys, which are constantly encountered on the way, are not afraid of people and do not show any aggression, and the scary-looking street cockroaches that sometimes cross the road do not pose absolutely any danger and themselves flee from people.
But there are two things that require careful and responsible attitude:
Things to do
The most important thing in Fuerteventura is nature. Therefore, the best and right thing you can do is to enjoy it: bird watching, hiking in the mountains, lying on the beach or visiting a national park.
If you want a more civilized holiday, you should go to large cities. If you dream of solitude, go to villages and remote corners of the island.
Here you can run, ride a bike (by the way, I mastered this type of transport in the Canaries), do yoga on the beach, master surfing and other active recreational activities. In general, everyone will find suitable leisure time for themselves.
Shopping and shops
Fuerteventura cannot be called an ideal place for shopping, but there are still large shopping centers with famous European brands here. It is best to go to the resort towns: Morro Jable and Corralejo, or to the capital - Puerto del Rosario, where in addition to a good mass market, there are also luxury brands.
Every coastal town has classic "beach" shops selling swimsuits, cheap summer clothes, sunbathing accessories and souvenirs. This can’t be called serious shopping, but you can buy a stylish T-shirt as a souvenir.
In my opinion, the best purchases are products from local craftsmen or books about the island. They are not yet available in Russian, but there are a lot of excellent publications in English.
Bars
There are many bars in Fuerteventura, they are in every city and even in small villages. The rule usually applies: the more locals there are in an establishment, the better the atmosphere and tastier the food. Sometimes, it really is worth moving away from the beaten path of tourists to find something interesting.
Classic bars, aimed at tourists, are located in large resort centers and along the coast. Lovers of strong drinks will appreciate the local rum.
Clubs and nightlife
Nightclubs are found only in big cities, and in villages all active life stops after 21:00. The best party spots are in Corralejo, the main youth resort of the island. Discos and parties are usually held on weekends, but there are establishments that are open all week.
You can see a rainbow flag above the entrance to many clubs; this does not mean that the club is intended exclusively for gay people, it simply means that the establishment is “gay-friendly,” that is, it welcomes all guests, regardless of their sexual orientation.
Extreme Sports
But what Fuerteventura is ideal for is active sports. Moreover, there are opportunities for this all year round!
Windsurfing and kite surfing
Ocean waves are the perfect place to stand on your board or sail on it. The best town for surfers in Fuerteventura is, of course, Corralejo! There is always wind blowing here, very powerful waves and very large beaches - there is enough space for everyone.
Local schools offer training programs for beginners, but you need to understand that the first training for kite surfers takes place on the shore: you need to understand how to control the kite. In the first few days, beginners are not allowed on the water at all.
Equipment rental is available in schools and in many hotels (a board costs about 10 EUR per hour, and a lesson starts from 30 EUR), there are even places where the cost of renting a board is already included in the price of your stay.
And those who, like us, are not yet ready to “catch a wave,” like to lie on the shore and watch the winged surfers. Incredibly beautiful!
Cycling
A lot of people get around Fuerteventura by bike. Rentals here are inexpensive, rental prices start from 5 EUR per day, and almost everywhere in the cities there are excellent bike paths.
For country trips, it is better to rent a mountain bike, as steep climbs await you on the road.
We rented bicycles all the time, and for me Fuerteventura will always remain the place where I learned to ride a bike on my first trip here.
Fishing
Fishing is an ancient way of survival for the islanders, but today more and more tourists are involved in sport fishing.
To ensure that guests do not cause irreparable damage to nature, special rules have been developed:
- catching mussels is prohibited from April 1 to June 30 and from September 1 to November 30, in addition, the minimum shell size must be 7 cm;
- coastal fishing: it is not allowed to use nets or stifle fish;
- underwater fishing: it is prohibited to fish at night, use electric or explosive mechanisms, traps, etc. The maximum catch per person is 5 kg; for group fishing (5 or more people), the weight of the catch is limited to 25 kg;
- classic fishing: no more than two fishing rods and three hooks can be used simultaneously, one person can catch no more than 4 kg of fish;
- Recreational Deep Sea Fishing: Cannot be conducted within one-half mile of professional fishing vessels, with a maximum of 3 fish allowed.
All fish can be caught only for personal use, not for sale. Equipment is usually rented, but you can bring your own. At the same time, the service itself is quite expensive compared to other types of recreation: the cost starts from 25 EUR.
Diving
The Canary Current and the deep, nutrient-rich waters off the coast of Africa provide excellent diving conditions in the region. In addition, these places are not inhabited by dangerous marine animals and plants, and the visibility and transparency of the water are very high.
In Fuerteventura there is a significant difference between the windward and leeward sides. On the windward side there are often less favorable conditions, but the marine flora and fauna are much more vibrant. Here it is the entire territory from Corralejo to Punta Pesebra. It is very interesting to dive near Ajui beach, where behind a large rocky plateau there begin caves with steep walls and passages along which schools of fish swim.
The most interesting diving spots are La Cresta and La Herradura, but diving there is quite dangerous, so only experienced divers are allowed there.
On the Jandia Peninsula, conditions are calmer, even beginners are allowed to dive here, and the diving season lasts all year.
The cost of one dive is from 40 EUR, all equipment can be rented. Please note that some swims will require a certificate.
Sailing
Yachts depart from almost every beach in Fuerteventura every now and then, but the main center is Caleta de Fuste. If you have your own yacht in the Canary Islands, then from the port of this town you can go anywhere.
If you are an ordinary person, then you can take part in organized sailing trips along the coast, it costs from 15 EUR per person.
Hiking
One of the most popular physical activities in Fuerteventura is hiking. There are many routes on the island: both easy for two to three hours and difficult for seven to eight hours.
Even the most difficult trails do not require special equipment, but comfortable shoes and the availability of water are very important. There are only occasional cafes along the way, so it’s better to take a snack with you on the road. Usually tourists go without a guide: the routes are well marked, accessible even for not very prepared people, and it is impossible to get lost there. But if you want to find an accompanying person, you can contact the tourist office; such a service will cost from 20 EUR, depending on the duration and complexity of the trip.
We have walked many routes, but the most fantastic of them is the road from Morro Jable to Cofete Beach! It was an unforgettable 19 kilometers.
How to get around the region
The most convenient way to get around the island is by rented car or buses. Public transport is represented exclusively by them (there is no railway and, accordingly, electric trains) and is very well developed.
Taxi is also a very comfortable way, but not cheap.
Fuerteventura has very friendly people - both locals and tourists. Many people stop and offer rides to pedestrians, although we hardly saw any hitchhikers.
Taxi. What features exist
All taxis in Fuerteventura are official and metered. The cars look the same: they have a diagonal stripe on the body. There is always a taxi sign on the roof that glows green when the car is free.
The journey costs approximately 1-1.50 EUR per kilometer, plus about 3 EUR you will have to pay for landing. At night, on holidays and for passengers with luggage, the fare increases by 10-15%. Most often, drivers can give you an approximate price estimate before the trip: they know the island very well. Be sure to check in advance about the possibility of paying by card: this service is not available in all cars.
Taxi drivers, as a rule, speak English, willingly talk about the surrounding area, but are not overly sociable: if you want to drive in silence, they will not intrude on conversations. The cars are clean, comfortable, with air conditioning. In general, the ride is a pleasure.
You can call a taxi by phone (but you will have to pay a little extra for this), or you can take it directly in the city, on the streets or in special parking lots.
Public transport
As already mentioned, the only type of public transport is buses. They connect almost all cities and villages; a special bus, made on the basis of an SUV, even goes to Cofete beach.
In my practice, transport always arrived on schedule, although I came across reviews about the poor performance of the bus network. Perhaps this is all in the past. Each station and stop in cities has a timetable, so you can figure out what time to wait for your flight.
Travel on buses is inexpensive, even for long distances you will spend 10-15 EUR, the cabins are very comfortable, with air conditioning and comfortable seats. In my opinion, this is one of the most practical ways to get around in Fuerteventura.
However, you need to understand that along the way the driver will turn into all the surrounding towns and villages, so the path will be much longer than if you go by car.
Transport rental
For those who drive a car, the most convenient option is to rent a car. Then you will be able to go even to places where you cannot reach by bus.
There are rental offices in all major cities, but the easiest way is to rent a vehicle directly at the airport or order it in advance from home. This way you can save a lot of money.
Renting on the island is inexpensive - from 30 EUR per day (you can look at options), besides, almost nowhere they take a deposit, however, they are not allowed on the ferry, that is, you will not be able to sail to another island with your car. In addition, full insurance is required.
In order to complete a transaction, you must, firstly, be over 21 years old, secondly, have an international driving license and, finally, provide a passport.
Roads on the island are free and mostly good. But in some places a perfectly flat and new track can suddenly end, and then a dirt road begins. Not all the roads in Fuerteventura have been rebuilt yet, but they are very keen on this.
Fines are quite high in Fuerteventura, so it is better not to break traffic and parking rules. Where the curb is marked with a solid yellow line, you cannot park, and in cities you can often see a blue line, which means that parking is paid. It is more profitable to find a hotel or apartment with its own parking.
Both the driver and all passengers must wear seat belts. In a roundabout, the car that is already moving in a circle usually has the right of way, but there are exceptions: pay close attention to the signs.
The road to Kofeta is very dangerous and you can only drive there in 4x4 vehicles; for passenger cars this route is not even included in any insurance!
And, of course, you should never drive while intoxicated.
Fuerteventura - holidays with children
Fuerteventura has a fairly mild climate, large sandy beaches and a high level of safety, so these places are great for families with children. The only negative is that the water in the ocean is quite cold, you can’t go swimming all the time.
However, many parents come here with their kids and are satisfied. As a rule, children easily adapt to the climate and practically do not undergo acclimatization.
It is best to choose quiet and peaceful resorts in Jandia for your holiday; the waves here are not so strong, so swimming will be better. But under no circumstances should children be allowed into the ocean alone, even in shallow water! I have already written about the danger of reverse currents; for children they are even more dangerous.
Children (and adults too) will find it very interesting to visit Oasis Park near the town of La Lajita. This is an amazing wildlife reserve, which 30 years ago was a bare desert. Today it is a gigantic area covered with greenery, home to several hundred species of animals, birds and marine life, including some that are not found in the wild on the island.
Tickets for teenagers over 12 years old and adults cost 33 EUR, for children from 4 to 11 years old - 19.50 EUR, for people over 60 years old - 28 EUR. Additionally, you can pay for a camel safari, interaction with lemurs and sea lions. Detailed information can be obtained from the park (in English).
Tickets can be purchased in advance on the Internet or directly on site; the park is open 365 days a year from 9.00 to 18.00.
Every morning at 8.15 - 9.30 there are free buses from different areas of Fuerteventura to Oasis Park, and at 16.30 - 17.30 flights go back. You can leave from Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma, Corralejo, Esquinzo, Otros and from the Jandia Peninsula. The schedule is also on the website.
The park has free bicycle parking, all paths are suitable for people using a wheelchair, a free Jungle Bus runs through the territory every ten minutes from 12.00 to 17.00 in the summer and from 12.00 to 16.30 in the winter. In addition, the park has several shops and cafes, a playground for children, baby changing facilities and a four-wheel scooter rental service.
Ski holiday
5 must-do things in this region
Fuerteventura is a truly amazing place. And, thinking about the five things that need to be done here, I would like to say: visit here five times! And then maybe five more. And further!
There is marvelous nature here, almost untouched by man, very beautiful landscapes, a stunning ocean, but most importantly, here it’s like you’re learning to hear yourself again. Therefore, you need to come here and breathe, breathe this freedom, catch the wind in your hair and feel alone with the world.
But I will still try to highlight five points:
- Walk a few kilometers along the Great Beaches of Corralejo, admiring the kite surfers. Or maybe try flying yourself!
- Go to Betancuria to see the history of the island with your own eyes and find out who Betancur was. Spoiler: he was a Frenchman who discovered the Canary Islands in 1402 and became the local viceroy. And one of his descendants, born in the Canaries almost four centuries later, worked in Russia for a long time. This engineer designed the Moscow Manege, bridges in Peterhof and on Kamenny Island in St. Petersburg. And this great-great-grandson of the great John de Betancourt, in whose honor the capital of Fuerteventura was named, was buried at the Smolensk cemetery in St. Petersburg.
- Relax on the Jandia Peninsula - the southernmost, most beachy and probably the most beautiful on the entire island.
- Go to Cofete Beach to find out what an endless coastline is and, at the same time, the most beautiful edge of the world. By the way, right next to the beach there is a tiny cemetery where residents of the village of Kofete are buried. Small (no higher than the knee) wooden crosses behind a stone fence, which are covered by the sand of the great ocean roaring nearby - the best allegory of eternal peace.
- And finally feed the wild parrots! :)
Go to Fuerteventura! I promise you will never forget this place!
Friends, you often ask, so we remind you! 😉
Flights- You can compare prices from all airlines and agencies!
Hotels- don’t forget to check prices from booking sites! Don't overpay. This !
Rent a Car- also an aggregation of prices from all rental companies, all in one place, let's go!
Anything to add?
Fuerteventura is the longest, most virgin and at the same time the oldest of the Canary archipelagos, it is 22 million years old! It is located approximately 100 km from Africa. The biggest attraction of this place is its coastline, which spans over 150 kilometers. In the west there are rocky cliffs and bays with volcanic sand, in the east there are huge amazing beaches with airy sand. That's why Fuerteventura is often called the island beach.
- Island: (Fuerteventura) Fuerteventura
- Area: 1660 km
- Capital: Puerto del Rosario
- Population: 103 thousand people
- Currency: Euro (EUR)
Fuerteventura is an island with a dry climate, strong winds and sandy soils - an ideal place for growing aloe. And this plant is the symbol of Fuerteventura. Aloe products are among the most imported. For example, various oils, creams or balms. Windmills used for energy production are also a characteristic element of the island's landscape.
The main transport hub is located in the capital - Puerto del Rosario. Buses mainly travel along the southeast coast between the resorts of Corralejo and Morro Jable. Ticket prices are quite high - a trip from the capital to Corralejo costs about 3 euros.
It is worth using a car rental on the island - it will take about 2-3 days to drive around the island by car. Fuerteventura's roads are in very good condition, so you won't have any problems getting around. Car rentals can be found in the capital, the airport and in major tourist resorts, including Corralejo, Morro Jable or Costa Calma.
Interesting places and attractions of Fuerteventura island
The island of Fuerteventura is replete with interesting places that are worth visiting.
Corralejo - Sahara sand dunes and beaches
This former fishing village is now Fuerteventura's most famous resort with a busy harbour. The impressive dunes of Corralejo are the most popular. Coastal, shifting sands brought by winds from the Sahara create the landscapes of the African desert.
This sandy area, almost 27 km long, stretches along the eastern coast (from the southern border of the village to the hill of Montana Roja). The sand dunes have been protected since 1982, and since then have had the status of a national park - Parque Natural de Las Dunas Corralejo.
In Corralejo you will also find some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It is worth mentioning Playa de Bajo Negro, Playa de los Matos or Playita del Poris, which form a multi-kilometer sand belt. Cruises to Lobos Island depart from the local port.
Jandia Peninsula - a kingdom of white beaches
This is the most mountainous part of the island of Fuerteventura, which delights with beautiful, untouched nature and huge dunes. Jandia is a peninsula covering 143 km of area and has been almost entirely protected as a natural park (Parque Natural de Jandia). The western part of the peninsula is dominated by rocks, while the eastern dunes have picturesque beaches.
The most beautiful beaches are located on the south coast and are called Playa de Sotavento. The Jandia Peninsula is also home to popular tourist resorts, including Costa Calma or Morro Jable, with its charming seaport. The beach in Cofeta will also make a huge impression. To reach this place, you need to overcome the "hell road" - on the side of the mountain, full of steep edges and sharp corners. However, it is worth overcoming this difficult path. Since at the arrival point you can see not only a fantastic beach, but also Villa Winter - the luxurious property of a German entrepreneur. According to some statements, it was here that General Franco met with Adolf Hitler.
Lobos Island - Meeting Nature
This is an ideal choice for a day trip. The cruise from the north coast of the island (port of Corralejo) takes about 15 minutes. The small island of Lobos is located approximately 2 km northeast of Fuerteventura. The most attractive thing about this place is its virgin nature. On the territory you can see more than 130 species of plants and many birds.
While on Lobos, it is worth taking a longer walk around the island - the expedition will take about 2-3 hours. Along the way you can see the abandoned village of El Puertito, the small volcanoes of Los Hornitos in the form of black cones and the Faro de Lobos lighthouse. It is also worth going to the highest elevation of the island - Caldera de la Montana. From there you can admire the entire panorama of Lobos, as well as Lanzarote and the neighboring island of Fuerteventura.
Beatancuria - the most beautiful city of Fuerteventura
Beatancuria has many monuments, and in the late 1970s the old part of the city was listed as a Spanish cultural heritage site. In the center, on the main square, the Church of St. Mary (Iglesia de Santa Maria) is considered the most beautiful sacred building on the island. The historic 16th-century manor house Casa Santa Maria is also nearby.
The ruins of a Franciscan monastery from the 15th century remain on the northern outskirts of the city. The city is surrounded by a valley that was once used as a defense against pirate invasions.
Oasis Park
A combination of zoological and botanical gardens in almost deserted Fuerteventura. About 2 thousand animals live in Oasis Park and 7,000 species of trees, shrubs and flowers. The biggest attraction of this place are camels, the breeding of which is considered one of the largest in Europe (there are about 450 of them).
In Oasis Park you can see giraffes, lemurs, kangaroos, ostriches and meerkats. Visitors are also attracted by entertaining scenes with parrots, various tricks of seals, alligators, snakes and even elephant seals. Entrance to Oasis Park for an adult costs 35 euros, for children - about 20 euros.
The island is often called the “European Hawaii” - it is here that the best conditions for windsurfing in Europe prevail, especially in the south. The most recommended location is Playa de Sotavento, on the Jandia Peninsula. It is one of the longest beaches on the island (22 km long) and hosts the World Windsurfing Championships every year.
Montana Tindaya - Fuerteventura's sacred mountain
This lonely mountain, 400 meters high, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands. For the original inhabitants, the Guanches, the construction of Tindaya was a magical and holy place. It was here that rituals, religious ceremonies and sacrifices were made.
Mount Tindaya rises in the vicinity of the village of the same name (in the northwestern part of Fuerteventura) and stands out from the barren landscape that characterizes the island. The path leading up to the hill is quite steep and difficult to climb. But if you manage to reach this peak, then a fantastic picture awaits you.
Llano Cave
The cave was created as a result of a volcanic eruption a million years ago. The Llano volcanic corridor is 648 meters long, about 12 meters wide and 3 to 5 meters high.
At the information center we will see a rich exhibition on the geological diversity of Fuerteventura. The walls of the cave are covered with hardened lava, and the bottom of the cave is filled with a layer of sediment and fossils. Remains of extinct animal species were found there. The Llano Cave is located in the north of the island, west of Corragello Park.
The island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands is an interesting place for tourism and recreation; visit it and you will have impressions for a lifetime!
