How to get there by car
If you have a driver's license and appropriate driving experience (at least 1 year), you can go on a trip in a rented car. A confident driver will spend approximately 4 hours on the road if he takes a short road. The distance between Vienna and Prague is 292 km, if you choose the optimal route: along the E50 and E59 highways through the cities of Jihlava and Znojmo.
Now you need to calculate fuel consumption. For a liter of gasoline in the Czech Republic you will have to pay 1.29 euros, diesel costs a little less – 1.25 euros. On average, 100 km requires 9 liters of fuel. This means that you will need at least 30 liters of gasoline for the entire trip for a total amount of 35 euros. And this is only in one direction. Therefore, to travel the route by car, you will have to spend at least 70 euros on fuel alone.
There are several toll sections along the way. For this reason, when renting, emphasize that you are going to travel to Austria, so you need a car with a vignette that gives you the right to drive on toll highways. Otherwise, you will have to buy a sticker with a minimum validity period at gas stations.
The sticker price in 2019 is 9 euros for 10 days. If you are caught without a vignette on Austrian motorways, the fine will be €120 if paid on the spot. The sticker must not be re-pasted or mechanically damaged, otherwise such actions will be considered fraud, which will entail a fine of 240 euros.
However, the first thing you will need to do is rent a car. The minimum average price per day for rental is 30 euros. The price includes taxes, vignette (if notified by the customer), Schengen visa insurance and navigation equipment. When concluding a contract, the client may be charged a deposit of 370 euros or more - this depends on the company’s rules. Some rental companies organize a weekend promotion, offering discounts on rentals from Friday to Monday.
When concluding an agreement, you must inform that you are going to cross the border by car: an additional fee may be required. Check to see if there are any restrictions and how many kilometers the mileage should be.
You can rent a car at a rental company, for example, czech.myrentacar.com, or at the airport. Rental companies' offices are usually located in the city center. You can also contact the company via the Internet by selecting a car model from the catalog. The rental procedure takes no more than 30 minutes. The client can order the car to be delivered to the selected location.
If traveling by car on your own is too expensive for you, you can use the BlaBlaCar service and become a travel companion. Drivers traveling on this route charge 11 euros per passenger.
Summarize
The Czech Republic and Austria are neighboring countries, so many tourists take the opportunity to visit both states at once. There are good transport links between Prague and Vienna, so you can get from one capital to the other by land transport in an average of 4 hours.
To save on overnight accommodation, travelers take the night train.

Bus Prague-Vienna: Video
The final trip of our Euro tour was a trip from Prague to Vienna, which we decided to take by bus. On weekdays, Student Agency buses start running from 3:30 to 16:30 at intervals of 2 hours, plus the last flight at 23:55, you will see a detailed schedule when you start booking tickets.
Tickets, in principle, can be bought at the central bus station itself (the so-called ÚAN Florenc Praha, where flights depart from), but then you need to be prepared for the fact that they may not be available. The best solution is to buy tickets online (save your nerves and time).
How to buy tickets?
Now I’ll try to explain how this can be done on the site
- On the right side, enter the points of departure and arrival, the date of travel and the age of the traveler. Important: if you do not need to go to Vienna itself, but to the airport, the name of the station should be entered as follows: Vienna, Schwechat Airport Busstation.
- Select a suitable flight. The first bus leaves at 3:30, then every 1-2 hours until 16:30, plus a night service at 23:55. It’s convenient that all these are non-stop flights. By pressing the blue I button, you will receive all the information you need about your upcoming trip. If you have one of these documents (EYCA - European Youth Discount Card or ISIC Internationally Recognized Student ID), then tickets will be even cheaper.
- After choosing a flight, click the “purchase” button and select seats.
- In the lower right corner there will be a “continue to summary” button (continue), and do not forget to tick the consent to the processing of personal data (shown in red)
- We fill in information about passengers and pay for the purchase.
In addition, tickets can also be purchased through the website http://czech-transport.com/, there is a menu in Russian, but tickets will cost a little more.
Price
Tickets cost 18 euros. It is profitable to buy round-trip tickets, since in this case the return ticket costs a euro cheaper. With the current exchange rate you will save 70 rubles :)
Departure station
ÚAN Florenc Praha: Prague Central Bus Station is located at Křižíkova 6, Praha 8, close to the Florenc metro station (line B/C).
As soon as you get to the station, look for the platforms of the Travel Agency company.
Buses to Vienna usually depart from platform 1, but it is also possible to depart from platform 21.
Buses, I must say, cannot compare with ours. They offer free hot drinks, air conditioning and a toilet. We were especially pleased with the leather seats, in which such a long journey passed unnoticed. In addition, there is an electrical outlet (230 V) and even Wi-Fi is available, but only in the Czech Republic. A flight attendant will always come to your aid.
The ride is long - 5 hours, but comfortable buses (particularly the seats) smooth out the impression. The road is straight, we passed through towns and villages, a pleasant view from the window if you drive during the day.

If you decide to grab a bite to eat, check out Pivovar Pegasus or Bistro Franz. These are the most colorful establishments in the city. If you're not driving, be sure to try Moravian wines and the famous Starobrno beer.
Enjoy the Gothic – stop in Znojmo
The route from Prague to Vienna will be eventful if you take your time and make stops in interesting places. Znojmo is located fifty-five kilometers from Brno. This is an interesting settlement with an ancient history. Znojmo is famous for its Gothic architecture. Here, while walking along the tourist route, be sure to enjoy the beauty:
- Dominican monastery.
- Gothic tower of the old town hall.
- The famous catacombs, whose length is about thirty kilometers.
- Central square.
There are plenty of restaurants in the city. Therefore, if you get hungry, you can easily find a nice place that suits your taste.
Winemaking Center – Mikulov
Further, traveling to Vienna by car, you can stop in Mikulov. This city is located near the Austrian border. From Znojmo you will have to drive forty kilometers. Mikulov is rightfully considered the center of Czech winemaking. Wine exhibitions are regularly held here. A unique symbol of the city is the largest wine barrel in Europe. It is designed to store more than one hundred liters of wine. And this barrel weighs twenty-six tons. This Czech town is worth visiting just for this reason. Visit:
- Mikulov Castle, which is a huge complex of buildings standing on a hill.
- Cave "Turoldu".
- Holy Mountain. Its height is three hundred sixty-three meters above sea level.
- Central square. Here you can get a closer look at Renaissance architecture.
As in other cities of the Czech Republic, in Mikulov you will not die of hunger. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants with delicious cuisine. After enjoying the sights and having a rest, move further along the route.
We pass the border
After this settlement, the Czech half of the road comes to an end. Then we cross the Austrian border. Let us note that the concept of “border” in the European Union is quite arbitrary. Most likely, when entering Austria from the Czech Republic you will not meet any government officials.
If you do get stopped by the police, don't worry. If your visas are in order, there will be no problems. If you are traveling from Prague to Vienna with a rental car, there is also no reason to worry. The main thing is that you have all the necessary papers confirming the rental of the car.
Another point – Klosterneuburg
On your way from Prague to Vienna, we recommend making one more stop in Klosterneuburg. This Austrian town is located sixty kilometers away from the Czech Mikulov. Here we recommend a special tourist route. Enjoy the beauty:
- The Augustinian monastery and its church.
- Chapels of Leopold. Be sure to enjoy the beauty of the Verdun Altarpiece.
- City Art Gallery.
In Klosterneuburg there is a vineyard located at the monastery. In the tasting room you will have the opportunity to taste wine produced by the oldest winery in Austria. Traveling from Prague to Vienna by car along this route will be memorable. We recommend making stops to get to know better the sights and history of Central Europe.
