Petrovac resort in Montenegro. Petrovac, Montenegro: photo, description of the city of Petrovac Venetian Fortress Castello
is a small resort town on the coast of Montenegro, located relatively not far from.
I'll start with the main thing, the city is very small, so you won't find a large selection of entertainment in Petrovac. There are also few historical attractions at the resort. In general, someone might get bored.
There are many small resorts in Montenegro, for example, or, where it’s never boring, because these resorts are located next to larger resorts, which can be reached in a few minutes and at a cost of three kopecks. With Petrovac, everything is different, this city is located separately, and it is not so easy and fast to travel from it to neighboring cities. Of course, you can go to Budva once or twice, but you are unlikely to take such a route every day. From Petrovac to Budva 17 km, it seems not so much, but not so little.
If you are an adult and active person, you like to walk a lot and constantly participate in something, I think that Petrovac is not the best place to relax, I advise you to take a closer look at others, where there is more entertainment and attractions.
But, nevertheless, Petrovac has some positive aspects, which I will now tell you about. The beaches at the resort are excellent, so if you spend all day lying on the beach, then Petrovac is the resort you need.
Petrovac is also well suited for families with small children; your mobility is still low, and you will not be able to appreciate the advantages of a larger city in Montenegro. And in Petrovac everything is close, with preschool children who don’t like to walk a lot, this resort is good.
Also, Petrovac is an excellent resort for people who cannot walk much, due to some health problems or due to advanced age.
City of Petrovac located on the shore of a picturesque bay surrounded by green spaces, the place is beautiful, and for those who do not need something new and a lot of entertainment every day, this resort is suitable.
I don’t know how clearly I was able to explain my vision of this resort, I hope it wasn’t too confusing.
Once again, choose Petrovac as your holiday destination in Montenegro if: 1. You are a fan of beach holidays. 2. You are traveling with small children. 3. You simply love a quiet, relaxing holiday, due to temperament, health or other reasons.
Petrovac is a relatively new city, which began to be actively developed only at the end of the 18th century. This is probably why there are few historical attractions in the city. Although people lived in this area long before the city was founded. Previously, on the site of Petrovac there was a village called Stara Lastva. The exact date of human settlement on the site of modern Petrovac is not known, but the first mention of the village in chronicles dates back to the 12th century.
Sights of Petrovac
The main attraction of the city Venetian fortress Castello. To tell the truth, I don’t consider this attraction outstanding, since there is nothing special to see there. But, nevertheless, if you are in Petrovac, you will definitely visit this attraction, if only because it is located near the beach; in fact, you don’t need to go anywhere. In addition, this place has the most famous restaurant in the city, and I am sure that you will want to sit in it.
Monastery complex Gradiste located near Petrovac and is a significant, although not the most famous, Orthodox monastery in Montenegro. The monastery consists of monks' cells and several churches.
You can visit Holy Resurrection Island and Katic, where there is a small church and wild beaches.
Beaches in Petrovac
I already wrote above that everything is fine with the beaches in Petrovac; they are in no way inferior to the beaches in other popular resorts in Montenegro. The beaches are equipped with everything you need. At this point it is appropriate to pause and explain that beaches within the city limits, not only in Petrovac, but throughout Montenegro are available for rent.
Usually the tenant of the beach is some kind of cafe that sells its products (beer, juices, pizza, etc.) on the rented beach. Also, the tenant rents out sun beds and umbrellas on the beach, receiving additional profit for this activity. Accordingly, tenants are interested in tourists visiting their beach; if it is bad on this beach, then half of the vacationers will go swimming to competitors. The beaches are regularly cleaned and equipped with everything necessary for relaxation. On almost all beaches in Montenegro, part of the space is reserved for tourists who come with their own towel and relax for free, i.e., they do not rent a sunbed and an umbrella. And, you know, the “system” works great, most of the beaches in Montenegro are very good, this statement is also true for the beaches of Petrovac.
Now, let's talk about what beaches there are in Petrovac. Most tourists swim at city beach, which is located directly in the city. This beach covers about two kilometers. The beach is equipped with everything necessary, as I already wrote, this is the “standard” for all city beaches in Montenegro. The beach has showers, toilets, sun beds, umbrellas, restaurants and cafes. How the beach is equipped can be seen in the photo below.
Not far from the city there is a small Lucice beach, the length of which is about 200 meters. This beach is more beautiful than the city one, and parents and children love it very much.
If you like lack of service, visit wild beach Buljarica. The beach is very beautiful, the scenery is superb, but on it you will not find any beds, no changing cabins, no signs of civilization.
The climate in Petrovac is Mediterranean and is not much different from the climate in other resorts on the Budva Riviera. Below you can see the average daily temperature at the resort.
As you can see, the hottest months are July and August, but even in February you are unlikely to freeze.
The swimming season lasts from May to the end of September, although some tourists, mostly Russians, swim until November. The sea is warmest in July and August, see water temperatures below.
Usually from mid-May, and sometimes from the beginning of this month, it is comfortable to swim.
As for precipitation, there should not be long and lingering rains in the summer, but from the second mid-September they are possible. Therefore, I always advise that you plan to end your holiday in Montenegro before September 15-20, since after this date the weather may become unstable. If you don't believe me, check out the chart below.
As you can see, in September it can already rain, yes, I agree, not every day, but still.
Accommodation in Petrovac
There are no problems with accommodation in Petrovac; vacationers have many apartments and hotels to suit every taste and budget. Check out hotel and apartment prices below.
Remember that the minimum prices are at the beginning and end of the season, and the maximum in July and August. In which month is it better to come on vacation is a very difficult question. On the one hand, in May or September, you will spend a third less money on renting an apartment; in addition, this time of year is better suited for excursions, since it is less hot than in the high season and it is more pleasant to walk. On the other hand, the sea is warmest in July and August.
Excursions from Petrovac and other activities
We offer a large selection of individual and group excursions departing from Petrovac. You can find their detailed description in the “” section.
The city's nightlife is concentrated near the fortress, where there is a nightclub and the most famous restaurant in the city, Castello. I have been to this restaurant, but, unfortunately, many years ago, I can hardly find a photo, however, I remember that the impressions were very positive.
Several festivals are held during the season, the Jazz Festival, Petrovachka Night and the Paštitsada Festival. As in all of Montenegro, the festivals are interesting and if one of the festivals is held during your holiday in Petrovac, be sure to visit. In the last couple of years, I began to go to them rarely, but this is not because the festivals are not interesting, but simply that I have already seen them all, some several times, and not only in Petrovac, but in almost all the resorts of Montenegro.
How to get to Petrovac
There are two airports in Montenegro, in Podgorica and Tivat. Which one to fly to if you are going to Petrovac, there is not much difference, look where the air ticket will be cheaper. You can search for cheap flights.
From airports you can get to Petrovac in the following ways:
- By bus. It is clear that this is the cheapest, and at the same time, the most inconvenient method. If you have ever been to Montenegro, it will probably not be difficult for you to get there by bus, but when entering the country for the first time, this is not suitable for everyone. Buses do not depart from airports; you need to get to the bus station.
- By taxi. I don’t recommend it, taxi drivers who work at the airport have “special” prices, most likely this will be the most expensive way.
- Book a transfer. Transfer from the airport to Petrovac can be booked on our website, go to the "" section.
- Rent a car. Of course, there is no point in traveling just to get from the airport to your place of residence. But, if you have plans for an active holiday, and you plan to travel a lot around Montenegro in the coming days, then why not rent a car at the airport?
P.S. Do you know that obtaining a residence permit (residence permit) in Montenegro is easier and cheaper than in any other country in the world? Tourists come to Petrovac for the clean sea, a relaxing beach holiday and a relaxed Montenegrin atmosphere. The resort is comfortably located in a natural bay, closed on all sides by mountains and forests, and sea views complement the idyllic landscape.
In this post I will tell you about the main attractions of Petrovac, the post will be short and useful. A longer tour of Petrovac is available here.
City and suburban beaches
The embankment is one of the places where it is pleasant to be at any time. It is on the embankment that all the tourist delights, cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, etc. are concentrated. Most decent Petrovack hotels should be looked for near the city embankment.
Some coastal cafes and restaurants operate not only during the high tourist season, but also after it ends. In summer it can be a little noisy and crowded, which makes the local embankment similar to the embankment in Budva.
The entire tourist life of the resort takes place near the city embankment, excursions are sold here, and you can immediately visit one of the restaurants with a Russian menu. On the embankment there is a museum, rental offices, and several real estate agencies.
Venetian fortress Castello
In the north of Petrovac, the embankment abuts a steep cliff on which a small fortress is built. This defensive structure was founded in the 16th century by the Venetians, who at that time ruled the lands of modern Montenegro.
Today, most of the fortress is given over to commercial needs, so you can sit in a cozy restaurant and think about Venetian grandeur. Only a small part is allocated for free visits; there is an observation deck, a cannon and a memorial stele.
Monasteries and churches
The visiting card of Petrovac is the island church; it is located on a tiny rocky island 500 meters from the coast.
In the immediate vicinity of the resort, you can visit a couple more ancient shrines of the Orthodox world. And in the immediate vicinity of the beach area there are several small churches.
Rezevici Monastery- on the territory of the monastery courtyard there are three churches, the oldest dating back to the 13th century. Surprisingly, this is one of the few Montenegrin monasteries that survived all the troubled times, natural disasters and reached the present day in perfect health.
Gradiste Monastery- the monastery is located a few kilometers from Petrovac, but I highly recommend visiting it. The date of foundation of the monastery is lost somewhere in the Middle Ages, presumably it is the 15th century. There are three churches in the monastery courtyard; they had a very difficult fate. Inside, unique frescoes from the 15th century have been preserved on the walls.
St Thomas' Church- currently inactive, there is a small cemetery on the territory. Near the temple there are Roman mosaics from Petrovac.
Church of St. Elijah- active, located next to the Church of St. Thomas. Built in the 15th century, it looks very ascetic in appearance, services are held regularly, and entry for tourists is free.
Church of the Holy Week- a tiny church located on an equally tiny coastal island. You can only visit there on a rented boat.
Roman mosaics in Petrovac
In the Montenegrin town of Risan, there are well-preserved Roman mosaics. In Petrovac, the size of the mosaics is a little more modest, and the attitude towards them is less pretentious. If in Risan they were hidden under a canopy, then in Petrovac they pay much less attention to the protection of ancient artifacts.
Exactly opposite the city beach, there are two tiny islands: Katic and Sveti Nedelya. The name of the second came from the tiny church built on it. Which in turn got its name from the legend about the miraculous rescue of sailors.
You can get to the islands only by rented boat, or as part of an excursion. Trying to get to the islands by swimming is not a good idea, although some sites thoughtlessly write about this possibility.
Virpazar and Skadar Lake
Half an hour's drive from Petrovac is the largest freshwater lake in the Balkans - Lake Skadar. If you live in Petrovac, then visiting there is highly recommended. You can get there either by rented car (see the link for my rental experience) or by bus.
The most tourist settlement on the shores of Lake Skadar is the tiny town of Virpazar. The city is so small that all its attractions can be explored in 20 minutes. But you can admire the suburban beauties endlessly.

The resort has a mild Mediterranean climate, characteristic of all settlements on the Budva Riviera. The sea water here warms up very quickly and remains warm from late May until November.
City `s history
The first mentions of settlements on the site of present-day Petrovac date back to the 12th century. Then there was a village called Stara Lastva. Petrovac was built on its ruins at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. On the outskirts of the city, on a rock you can see a fragment of an ancient fortress. And one of the attractions of the resort - the Venetian fortress “Castello” - invites you to visit the Museum of Roman Mosaics, where there are many artifacts, unique works and even an obelisk with the names of city residents who died during the Second World War.

Beaches of Petrovac in Montenegro
A few words about the beaches at this resort. The beach areas of Petrovac are considered the best in the country. They are thought out to the smallest detail, they have everything necessary for a comfortable stay, and entering the water is absolutely safe for children, so parents can relax and bask in the sun. There are several beaches in total:
