Attractions on the map
A small port town on the coast in the Var department at the foot of the not particularly high Mor mountain range, these days it is the most popular and prestigious resort on the entire Riviera.
View of the Old Port
Two hundred years ago, few people had heard of him, even in France itself. But it was chosen by artists - Paul Signac, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard... Their works became famous, and the town itself began to attract more and more attention, the views of which were depicted on their impressionist canvases.
And in the very middle of the last, twentieth century, a wave, or rather a storm of fame and popularity covered Saint Tropez - the filming of the film “And God Created Woman” with Brigitte Bardot in the title role took place here. The previously unknown actress became the idol of all French (and not only) men, and the town itself became a place of attraction for the artistic and aristocratic public.
Several decades later, famous comedy films starring Louis de Funès were filmed here. This was, perhaps, the most beloved French actor outside of France - and Germans and Englishmen flocked to St. Tropez in large numbers...
Recreation and entertainment
Nowadays, Saint Tropez (this name is also translated as Saint-Tropez and St. Tropez) is the most fashionable resort on the entire French Cote d'Azur. Many world celebrities love to relax here, and a considerable number of them have acquired villas or other real estate here.
Meeting a star on the street or in some establishment is not such a rare occurrence here. This adds a special atmosphere to the town, in addition to the charming Provencal flavor, sandy beaches and pine trees, developed recreation and entertainment infrastructure: restaurants, bars, discos, concerts, endless exhibitions and festivals...
Speaking about tourist services, they give the following example: there are quite a lot of beaches in the city and nearby, but it can be difficult to leave the main territory - Pampelonne - in such an endless line, for kilometers, shops, cafes, bars, restaurants stretch along it...
Holidays in Saint-Tropez are mainly associated with the sea: sunbathing on the beaches, swimming, boating and various boat trips, diving and other marine activities, as well as a promenade along the famous city promenade.
Leisurely walks along other city streets - narrow and uniquely beautiful - can also bring great pleasure - but not in July and August, when it can be difficult to squeeze through them. Those preparing to travel to St. Tropez should keep in mind that this is a very popular place among tourists.
Beaches
Throughout the resort, along the coastline of the peninsula and along the Bay of Pampelonne, you can count up to forty or even more beaches, mostly sandy. The main one, Pampelonne Beach, stretches for five kilometers. It is never crowded with vacationers; there are many shops with souvenirs and gifts, cafes and bars. Other most popular beaches: Tahiti (Plage de Tahiti), Bonne Terrase, Bouillabaisse Beach, Caneliers Beach (Plage de Caneliers), l'Escalet Beach, Salins beach (Les Salins), Graniers... Most beaches are free.
Most reviews about Pampelonne and other beaches are enthusiastic. Still, it should be borne in mind that these are not the best beaches in the world (in comparison with the Maldives, they naturally lose). And there are demanding tourists who find shortcomings: the sand is not white enough, sometimes the wind blows (the Mistral has not been canceled), brownish masses sometimes float in the water (which itself is very clean) (probably microalgae - the French themselves do not pay attention to them).
Hotels
In Saint-Tropez you can find hotels to suit every taste and at quite a variety of prices (especially if you are prepared to stay some distance from the center). But there are, of course, very prestigious hotels, among which the first to be noted is the Hotel Byblos-Saint Tropez - a favorite place of celebrities. This hotel is often placed in the top ten hotels around the world (not just in France) where stars like to stay. True, some of the guests who stayed there consider the prices at Hotel Byblos to be unreasonably high.
Other famous hotels: Hotel SEZZ, La Residence de la Pinede, Chateau De La Messardiere, La Bastide de Saint Tropez, Benkirai Hotel.
With kids
Those who come to relax with children should definitely visit the Butterfly House. His collection is one of the largest in Europe, containing more than 20 thousand of these winged insects.
There is also entertainment for children in the Aqualand park in Saint-Maxime (can be reached in 10 minutes by ferry).
In Saint-Maxime, the Museum of Photography and Mechanical Music is very interesting - it contains a unique collection of ancient photographic and musical mechanical apparatus.
For adults
There are countless fashionable clothing stores and boutiques in the city. Shopping is said to be excellent here. The name “Fashion Trends Laboratory” was assigned to this French town. By the way, the famous brand of clothing and footwear Les Tropeziennes owes its name to him (the sandals with their characteristic shape are especially famous).
Twice a week in the morning there is a city market here (you can buy clothing items at low prices).
Sights and museums
The main historical attraction is a fortress-citadel with several towers (one of which is from the 16th century) - we have an exhibition of the Maritime Museum in it. The citadel is located in an elevated part of the city. It offers beautiful views of the bay and St. Tropez itself.
Citadel Saint Tropez (Maritime Museum)
Throughout France, the Butterfly House (Maison des Papillons) is famous with its richest collection,
The Art Museum de l "Annonciade (located in the Chapel of the Annunciation in the central part of the city) reminds that it was here that the world learned about the Avant-garde art direction.
There are many other art exhibitions and galleries in the city.
You can visit the chapel of St. Anne, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In the vicinity of the resort you can visit the picturesque towns:
Grimaud- a port and marina for several thousand yachts in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. This place can be compared to Venice - there are canals, bridges, and villas...
Cogolin- a famous center for handicrafts.
Saint-Maxime(Saint-Maxime) is another prestigious resort with its own discos, restaurants and, of course, beaches. (We have already mentioned the museum of photography and mechanical music). The Aqualand park is located here.
Tourist office located in the historical part of the city, in the Old Port. To help tourists there are maps, help with accommodation, individual tours, sales of discounted tickets and just useful tips... In spring and summer it is open every day. From October - except Sundays. The year 2013 in St. Tropez is dedicated to Malta and the city's tourism office is organizing many events related to the Maltese tourist destination.
Saint-Maxime and Saint-Tropez on the map
A walk from one resort to the neighboring one will take about 3 hours, although you will have to walk mainly along the highway.
By boat-ferry across the bay the journey will take about 10-15 minutes.
Saint-Tropez is a popular seaside resort in the south of France, at the very mention of which the imagination begins to paint pictures of a beautiful harbor full of expensive yachts. I chose the Cote d'Azur with its pleasant climate and warm, gentle sea for my daughter and I's vacation.
How to get to Saint-Tropez?
The plane arrived at the Cote d'Azur international airport. It is located just seven kilometers from Nice, and is very convenient for those who decide to go to St. Tropez.
There are several regular bus routes from the airport to Nice, so there will be no difficulties in getting to the city. There are three ways to get from Nice to St. Tropez:
- By rented car– this is a convenient, simple and quite democratic option. During the trip, you can enjoy the beautiful views that open along the coast. The roads here are free, but during the high season there are periodic traffic jams.
- The second way is train plus bus. For those who do not have a driver's license or are afraid to drive independently in an unfamiliar country. From Nice we go by train to San Rafael, where we look for a small bus station and VarLib buses near the railway station. It takes 1.5-2 hours if there are no traffic jams.
- The third is the most interesting and exciting. That's where we chose. Speedboat that runs throughout the summer from Nice to St. Tropez. It turns out to be a real, albeit not long, sea voyage.
Having reached St. Tropez, we went to the hotel, the room of which had been booked in advance. If you are planning a vacation with children, then you should choose the appropriate hotel. Preferably close to the beach or city center so that you can quickly get to the desired location.
With a child, you should definitely visit the Butterfly House; it has the largest collection in Europe.
Lots of children's activities in the Aqualand park in Saint-Maxime.
Just 10 minutes on the ferry, and the child will be happy, and the parents will be able to relax a little.
Sights of Saint-Tropez
View of the city of Saint-Tropez
In addition to its beautiful beaches, Saint-Tropez is famous for its attractions and interesting history. The picturesque port town gained a reputation as a star resort thanks to the cinema of the 20th century.
The most famous places that you should definitely visit when traveling to St. Tropez:
- Suffren Castle– one of the oldest buildings in the city. It is located on the Place de la Hôtel de Ville. It was built at the end of the 10th century. Now there is an antiques store here.
- Fortress of Saint-Tropez — towers over the city as the guardian of the bay. Behind the fortress lies a magnificent garden. And from its walls there is an amazing panorama of the city and the sea. Now the fortress houses a naval museum.
- Museum of the Annunciation - a real temple of art. The seemingly small building is filled with works of brilliant avant-garde artists. The collection of paintings that the museum presents speaks of Saint-Tropez as a cultural center.
- Port Grimaud- a wonderful place located a few kilometers from St. Tropez. It was created in the 60s of the 20th century according to the design of the architect Francois Spori in the likeness of Venice.
Don't forget about the numerous restaurants and cafes. For those who are partial to the national Provençal cuisine, St. Tropez is a real find. Even the most demanding gourmet will be able to satisfy their needs.
For shopping lovers, boutiques of world famous brands will open their doors.
You can enjoy nature and clean air by walking around the Saint-Tropez Peninsula, surrounded by graceful pine trees and sandy beaches.
The city has Luna Park, a real children's paradise. The entrance is free. There are no age restrictions. Opens in early April and runs until mid-September. There are 22 attractions here.
Beaches of Saint-Tropez
The beaches of the Cote d'Azur are the treasure of France. The wonderful Mediterranean climate gives it long, hot summers and mild winters. As many as 300 sunny days a year, the beach season from May 1 to the end of October - all this makes St. Tropez very attractive to tourists.
City beach of Saint-Tropez
In St. Tropez you can not just lie on the sand, but also become familiar with the monuments of world culture. Along the entire coast of the Cote d'Azur there are private beaches, well equipped with sun loungers and umbrellas and wild ones, secluded in the far corner of the Cote d'Azur. A promenade along the city embankment with a visit to countless shops, sea sports such as diving are excellent pastime options.
One of the most famous beaches near St. Tropez is Pamplona. It extends for 5 kilometers.
The beach is very popular among celebrities. It is dotted with bars, restaurants and other entertainment venues. For families with children, it is better to go to the most accessible beach of Les Graniers.
A strip of coastal boulevard runs along the entire Canebie Bay. Walking along it you can reach the beaches of Cap-Saint-Pierre, Bon-Terrace, Cap-Saint-Tropez and Les Salins.
The high season in St. Tropez opens in May. At this time, a lot of tourists flock to the city. The water is still cold no more than +16+18 degrees. But it’s nice to just lie on the well-groomed sand. This alone will bring considerable pleasure.
But in mid-June the real swimming period begins. The Mediterranean Sea has already warmed up to +21+22 degrees. This is the time that is most suitable for relaxing with children. The water off the coast has become warm and comfortable for babies and older children. The average temperature is about 25 degrees. The onset of twilight does not bring with it cold, but gives a pleasant coolness.
Traveling to St. Tropez is truly a miracle. This is one of the most beautiful places in France. It's beautiful and romantic here. An abundance of entertainment for adults and children, numerous architectural monuments, magnificent nature - all this is definitely worth seeing.
Excursions to picturesque Provençal villages are organized from St. Tropez. It's nice to stroll along the intricate streets, look into local shops, and relax your soul. A trip to St. Tropez will turn into a vivid memory and you will want to return to this city again.
Travel to Saint-Tropez - VIDEO
In Saint-Tropez, the past - churches, peacefully coexist with the present - clubs, hotels and restaurants. This city is also connected to the sea, so there are many beaches. Everyone in St. Tropez will find something to suit their taste.
We will be pleased if you share with your friends:
... Many have heard about this noisy, interesting and controversial place on the Mediterranean coast in the French department of Var.
Some people imagine a quiet town for a family holiday, others a noisy resort for billionaires, others the delightful nature of Provence...
Sea
The sea in St. Tropez is at least no worse than, and in some respects even better.
The water temperature and swimming season here are just as long: May-September, and in some seasons you can swim until the end of October.
The coastline here is quite rugged and therefore diverse in terms of landscapes for about 15 kilometers from Port Grimaud to Ramatuelle. This creates a picturesque change of sea views (from bays to the open sea) and the opportunity to choose a place on the shore that best suits your wishes.
Beaches
A detailed article will be published about the beaches of St. Tropez, and therefore I will allow myself only a few sensible comments.
The beaches in the city itself and at the entrance to it are not very clean, but at the same time they are gentle and are well suited for families with children.
For small groups and lovers of romance or solitude for swimming, the coastal strip on the cape is suitable when walking out of the city in the direction of the beaches of Pamplona. There you can find quiet places on the rocky shore, hidden from the curious, ubiquitous tourists.
For young people, lovers of sports entertainment and parties, the best beaches are those located in the commune of Ramatuelle and called “Pamplona beaches”. There, the total length of the coastline is more than 7 kilometers, and you can settle down for every taste - simply on a towel on the municipal beach, or with pomp and champagne on a paid beach.
Atmosphere of celebration and fun
The atmosphere of a holiday, summer carefree idleness and idleness, luxury and chic, exclusivity and carefreeness in St. Tropez is felt already upon entering the city. And it seems that even the air of St. Tropez is permeated with fun everywhere.
Wherever you go and whatever you do, it attracts, beckons, makes you forget about everything and stay in St. Tropez as long as possible. And numerous bars, restaurants, cafes, nightclubs, beaches and parties in villas help maintain such an atmosphere.
Try the tarte tropezien
This famous dish throughout France was invented and presented in Saint-Tropez in the early fifties of the last century by Polish pastry chef Alexander Mika.
It consists of a large airy bun, sprinkled with coarse sugar and filled with cream, which in turn consists of three other types of pastry creams. This dessert was so loved by the team of director Roger Vadim, who filmed his films here in the fifties, that thanks to them it became famous throughout France. And the best tarte tropezien is prepared, naturally, in the bakery of the same name!
Visit the famous port
The port is at the same time the center of restaurant and terrace life, the final destination of shopping routes, a place of pleasant bliss and relaxation, as well as a vanity fair and a yacht exhibition.
Here you can admire the expensive luxury yachts from an arm's length distance, and even climb onto some of them to take photographs (with due courtesy to the crew). Tens of thousands of tourists visit the port of St. Tropez every year to admire the fashionable masterpieces of shipbuilding art up close.
Shopping
Many people come to shopping in Saint-Tropez, because here, per unit area in the center of the town, bounded by the port - Vasro Boulevard, there are a lot of boutiques of the highest brands and the same number of costume jewelry, jewelry stores and other shops. There are also bars and restaurants for a light break and lunch.
At the same time, pay attention to typical Tropezien sandals - you won’t buy these anywhere else. But T-shirts, polos and other paraphernalia with the inscription “Saint Tropez” are already kitsch and have not been in fashion for a long time, so we warn you against buying them so as not to be confused with Romanian tourists.
Play petanque at Place de Lys
On Sundays this square turns into a huge market in the morning, but in the afternoons and on weekdays it is the kingdom and temple of petanque. A lot of locals gather here to play this typically Provençal game, and if you are also an adept of this game, then no one will stop you from joining them. (More about the favorite games of the French -)
If you get tired, along the perimeter of the square you will see many cafes and bars where you can invigorate yourself with pastis, or, on the contrary, relax with rose.
Look at the elite and the stars
Seeing how the world's elite, stars from all continents, billionaires and others like them, are relaxing is a common thing in St. Tropez.
Here you can easily sit in the same restaurant at the next table with world-famous politicians, find yourself at the same party with Hollywood celebrities, or bump into media personalities at the entrance to a boutique.
The main concentration of the elite in the evenings is the port. Here you need to sit at a table with a cocktail or rose wine on one of the terraces and admire the people passing by. Believe me, this activity will not get boring, because you will not find so many beautiful, fashionable and rich personalities gathered in one place anywhere else in the world (except for the Oscars, of course).
Attend the fishermen's festival
Yes, yes, despite all the luxury and splendor, just 60-70 years ago St. Tropez was a provincial fishing village. And even now, hereditary fishermen here go out to sea every morning and return to sell their catch not only in expensive hotels and restaurants, but also in the local market, in the old fashioned way, from stalls.
And every year there is a fishing festival organized by the city hall with beautiful processions in traditional costumes with torches, fires and bonfires, round dances in the port and fireworks. The holiday takes place in two stages – June 29 and July 6. I highly recommend you visit it to experience the real life of this old fishing port.
See the famous Gendarmerie
Yes, this building has still been preserved, despite the fact that it has already become quite dilapidated and has not been used for its intended purpose for a long time. At one time it was proposed to be demolished several times, but thanks to the tenacity of the mayor of St. Tropez, it survived and is one of the most photographed objects in the city.
The Gendarmerie is located on Rue Generale Leclerc - directly opposite the Monopri supermarket.
In addition to this building, tourists are reminded of the glory of this city as the gendarme seaside capital of France by an actor dressed up in the uniform of gendarmes of the 50s of the last century, who periodically gives his performances on the central streets of the city, and most often in the area of Place de Lys. He entertains the public by “regulating” traffic and encouraging billionaires in convertibles stuck in traffic jams, in the style of “What are you doing here, pass quickly” and “Come in large numbers, St. Tropez is not made of rubber!”
Saint-Tropez is a port town on the French Cote d'Azur, located in the southeast of France, 70 kilometers from Nice (112 km along the highway) and 102 kilometers from Marseille (143 km along the highway). My acquaintance with this city began in childhood with films about the gendarme from Saint-Tropez with the inimitable Louis de Funes. During my first visit, I certainly noticed that a lot has changed, but the special atmosphere still gives an exceptional charm to this place. I simply adore its cozy streets in the spirit of Provence, the seething energy of the tourist season and the calm, regularity of winter everyday life.
The local currency is the euro and the language is French, but restaurants, shops and hotels always have English-speaking staff. It is worth noting that most French people have a very interesting “soft” accent, and they simply love not to pronounce the English letter H. As for the time difference, in summer it is 1 hour (from Moscow), and in winter – 2 hours.
Much has been written about how a fishing village turned into a “star” resort. Cinema, actors, artists and musicians undoubtedly played a vital role in this. Be that as it may, the label of a “star” resort has firmly attached itself to Saint-Tropez and attracts tens of thousands of tourists from all over the world every season. However, besides the “stars”, luxury villas and yachts, there are many other interesting places, attractions, and entertainment. Beach lovers will appreciate the Mediterranean Sea, the vibrant nightlife of the summer months will delight clubbers, and if you want to retire surrounded by impressive scenery, then this is also possible.
More details about everything below.
How to get there
You can get to Saint-Tropez by almost all types of transport, the choice depends on where you are entering from.
From Russia it is more logical to give preference to a plane or a train. If you are already in France or Europe, then the choice is quite large. The determining factor will be the duration of the trip. For example, when going here for a weekend, it is preferable to choose a plane or train, but for a longer stay a car is also suitable (convenient for getting around in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez).
By plane
There is, of course, no airport in Saint-Tropez itself; the town is too small for that. However, the traveler who wants to fly here has three airports nearby:
- La Mole (private flights and flights to Nice);
- Toulon-Hyères (domestic flights and flights to the UK);
- Nice international airport.
Nice International Airport
It is located more than a hundred kilometers from Saint-Tropez, but it is the most convenient option. Direct flights from Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as from Minsk and Kyiv are served here.
The ticket price depends on the time of year. The highest prices are in July, August (from 500 €), as well as during the New Year holidays. The rest of the year you can find tickets from 300€.
The duration of the direct flight is about 3 hours 50 minutes; planes depart from Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo. A direct flight will take on average 3 hours 40 minutes.
You can choose a convenient flight option on aggregator sites, for example.
How to get from the airport to the city
Transfer to Saint-Tropez by taxi costs, on average, from 200 euros. The fastest way will be by helicopter (320 euros per person). Although you can also get there by public transport (see details below, in the “By Bus”, “Boat” section).
Another option is renting a car. There are representative offices of many companies at the airport. Renting for the entire duration of your stay will cost much less than a one-way trip with the car returned to Saint-Tropez. You can book a car in advance and pick it up at the airport. It is convenient to compare prices and conditions on search engine sites, for example.
By car you will get there in approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, it can be faster: it all depends on traffic jams. When leaving the airport, follow the direction A8 (blue sign), Sophia-Antipolis, Antibes, Cannes. Follow the blue signs, in France they show directions along the Autobahn. Leave the piste at exit 36 Le Muy and then follow the green signs for Saint Tropez.
Toulon-Hyères Airport
If you are already in France and decide to head to the Mediterranean Sea, I recommend Toulon-Hyères airport (about 50 km from Saint-Tropez). I like that it is quite small in size, and, accordingly, registration and security control are quick. Getting to Saint-Tropez from here is much easier, as there is a direct bus line 7803 (see section "By Bus"). Regular flights serve the following destinations:
- Southampton,
- Bordeaux,
- Bastia,
- Azhaxio.
How to get from Toulon-Hyères airport to the city
Leaving this airport by car, you will get to Saint-Tropez in 50 minutes. Follow directions La Londe les Maures, then Bormes Les Mimosas (without entering this village), then La Môle.
The road through La Môle, of course, does not allow you to enjoy the coastal scenery, as it passes through the forest, but there are fewer traffic jams. From La Môle follow the signs for Saint Tropez.
La Mole Airport
You can't ignore La Mole airport, 15 km from Saint-Tropez. It serves direct lines to Geneva, Nice (helicopter), Sillon. Working with private jets and helicopters represents the main direction of his activity.
How to get from La Mole airport to the city
The map shows the route of travel by car.
As with the previous options, simply follow the signs.
By train
Of course, you can’t get to Saint-Tropez by train, but you can get to Nice without any problems.
Moscow-Nice
The Moscow-Nice train departs from the Belorussky station on Thursdays (journey time is 10 hours 18 minutes), Nice - on Saturdays (21 hours 45 minutes) from the station.
Lux costs €809.80, first class €345.50 and second class €228.66. Details on tariffs and the discount system (discounts for pensioners and children) can be found on the Internet, for example, on the Russian Railways website.
As for the comfort in the carriages, one of my relatives was satisfied after traveling in second class and even decided to repeat the trip if necessary. However, I note that given the length of the trip, it is very important to travel with good travel companions.
From Nice to Saint-Tropez
At the Nice train station, you can buy a train ticket to Saint-Raphael, from where you can get to Saint-Tropez by boat or bus (see section By Bus, Boat). A ticket for a regular train costs about 12.30 € (price may vary depending on the period) and 18.00 € for a high-speed train (TGV). The average route duration is 1 hour 15 minutes.
If you are traveling to Saint-Tropez by train, for example, from Paris, then take a ticket to Toulon. In Toulon, the train station is located next to the bus, where bus lines 7801 and 7802 will take you there (see section By Bus).
By bus
The local bus system is quite well developed and allows you to get to Saint-Tropez from almost anywhere.
The Gare Routière bus station is located in close proximity to the city center, not far from the Hôtel de Paris.
Nice airport
There is line number 3003, the ticket costs 20 €. The bus departs from platform 5 in Terminal 1 and from platform 1 in Terminal 2. It will take you to Saint Raphael, where you can change to line 7601, which goes to Saint-Tropez. Since this is an internal route of the Var department, the ticket will cost you 3 €. However, given the constant traffic jams during the peak season, in July and August it is better to give preference to a boat - you will be there much faster.
Toulon-Hyères Airport
As I noted above, there is a direct line 7803. During the tourist season, there are five regular flights at your service, and the ticket costs, as on all internal lines of the department, 3 euros.
Toulon (bus station)
Both lines 7801 and 7802 go to Saint-Tropez (internal lines of the department). The difference between them is that the route of the first runs along the coastal road, while the second passes through La Môle, moving away from the sea and, accordingly, from traffic jams. Personally, I prefer 7802 as there are fewer stops on this route and the bus gets to Saint-Tropez much faster. The only drawback is the sharp turns. If you get motion sickness in transport, then just in case, prepare everything you need (in some places the roads are narrow and there are no shoulders, so the bus may not stop everywhere).
The schedule of all flights can be found on the Warlib website.
Local lines
Saint-Tropez also has bus lines that take you to local beaches. They depart from Place des Lice, in the city center. Detailed information can be found on the website.
From the bus station there is route 7703, with which you can visit villages such as Gassan and Ramatuelle. Line 7705 serves the beaches of Ramatuelle (schedule also on the Warlib website).
Route from Russia
Several years ago I also had the opportunity to come to France from the Russian Federation by bus. The route “Moscow - Nice” is long and tiring (night customs control, fellow travelers). However, this is a fairly economical form of transport (a round trip ticket costs about 300€), and it also allows you to enjoy the scenery.
Unfortunately, you cannot get to Saint-Tropez by bus from Russia, only to Nice. There you will have to change trains and get to Saint-Raphael, where you can choose a bus line or a boat to Saint-Tropez.
By car
A car is without a doubt the most convenient form of transport, especially in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. However, it also has its drawbacks: gasoline prices in the EU, traffic jams.
From cities in France
If you decide to get to Saint-Tropez by car, for example from Paris or another French city, you need to take into account the financial factor. Gasoline and especially the autobahn are expensive, for example the route Nice - Saint-Tropez is estimated at 7.80 €.
You can calculate the approximate cost of your trip using GPS (some GPS models will automatically calculate this data for you when you enter the route) or. For example, the route “Paris - Saint-Tropez” will take 8 hours 48 minutes and is estimated at 157.32 €. However, it is worth noting that the duration and cost of the trip may vary significantly (the price of gasoline depends on gas stations, traffic jams are possible). The maximum speed on the French autobahn is 130 km/h.
From Russia
I never had to get to Saint-Tropez by car from Russia. With well-chosen stops, such a trip will allow you to visit more than one country in Europe, since Saint-Tropez is located 3,279 km from Moscow.
When traveling by car, take folding bicycles with you, if possible. During stops, you can move around without spending on gasoline, which is expensive in the EU.
By boat
Boats can be reached from Saint-Raphael, Sainte-Maxime, Port Grimaud, Marine de Cogolan and Les Issambres.
From Saint-Raphael the ticket costs 15€ for adults and 10€ for children, timetable for
The boat from Saint-Raphael arrives at the pier located near the Parking du Port parking lot, not far from the bus station (see the plan, the pier is marked with a red circle).
As for all other settlements, they are served by the company “Les bateaux verts”.
A return ticket from Sainte-Maxime costs €13.50 for adults and €7.50 for children aged 4 to 12 years. The boat docks in the city center (see the plan, I marked the pier with a red circle).
Numerous excursions are also offered, which you can find on the company’s website

When is the season? When is the best time to go
The season in Saint-Tropez begins in April, reaches its peak in July, August and gradually ends in October. It is worth considering that in April, and often also in early May, weather conditions are quite unstable, the holiday can be overshadowed by precipitation or strong winds (for example, the Mistral).
My favorite periods are from mid-May to the end of June and September. In the first case, the sunny weather has already firmly established itself, and the flow of tourists is moderate, because the French students are still at school. Also during this period, restaurants, bars and boutiques are reopened and operating at full capacity.
I like September primarily because of the weather - the sun is not as scorching as in July and August - and the fewer number of tourists in the city and on the beaches.
Another important element worth noting is prices. They are much lower at the beginning and end of summer and go through the roof (as do the temperatures) during the peak season. You can check prices for tours on the dates you are interested in.
Also during the tourist season there are numerous cultural and sporting events. Among the most famous and attracting a huge number of tourists it is worth noting:
- Harley-Davidson Euro Festival in early May,
- the Rolex Cup sailing regatta in early June,
- as well as Fight Night in August and the sailing regatta Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez at the end of September.
No matter what time you come, you will have something to see. I will tell you more about the events below.
Saint Tropez in summer
In summer, the port town bustles with life, both day and night. Thousands of tourists fill the streets, port, shops and restaurants. This is the busiest period, when the beaches and villas of Saint Tropez emerge from their winter hibernation, filling with guests from all over the world. And the reason for this is the sunny weather.
The average temperature in summer fluctuates around +26–28 °C.
Saint Tropez in autumn
In autumn, the pace of life slows down, tourists and seasonal workers gradually leave the town. The beginning of September is an excellent time for a vacation, since the thermometer still shows quite attractive temperatures (on average +25–26 °C), and most of the tourists have already left the city.
In October, the air temperature drops to +19 °C. October and November are not the best time to travel, as there may be a lot of rainfall during these months.
However, in the fall there are two events that simply cannot be missed and, in my opinion, should be seen at least once: the regatta “Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez” from September 24 to October 2 and the sale (Braderie de Saint-Tropez) from 28 to 31 October (dates may vary from year to year).
Saint Tropez in spring
Spring is a time of awakening. Along with the sun, tourists gradually return (like migratory birds), filling the café terraces and heralding the inevitable start of the season.
The weather during this period is unstable, but if you still decide to come in the spring, I advise you to focus on May: with more stable weather, you will be able to watch events such as the Eurofestival Harley-Davidson or the Bravado Saint-Petersburg festival. Tropez (Bravade). Average temperatures range from +19 °C to +23 °C.
Saint Tropez in winter
In winter, Saint-Tropez lives in a special slow rhythm. It's time for local residents to relax and they go on vacation. And boutiques and restaurants use the winter months to renovate. The town comes alive during the Christmas holidays, but most of the establishments remain closed. Average temperatures in the winter months are not very attractive: from +13 °C to +15 °C.

Districts. Where is the best place to live?
Saint-Tropez itself is a small town, and the historical center is even smaller. Restaurants, bars, nightclubs and shops are concentrated in the city center, which is why you should not rent an apartment here for your holiday. The lively nightlife of the summer months (especially July and August) can put a damper on your holiday. Areas such as the Port (Le Port), the Citadel (La Citadelle), the Old Town (La Vielle Ville), the Garonne (La Garonne) are of course very picturesque and prestigious, but not ideal for living (I separated them with a red line on the map).
If you still want to stay in close proximity to the city, give preference to apartments with windows onto the garden, courtyard, or apartments located in residences.
In my opinion, the optimal areas for living are:
- Pilon (Le Pilon),
- Bourgade and Les Conquètes,
- Foxes (Les Lices).
They are located in close proximity to the center (you can even walk there) and are much quieter in terms of noise (I separated them on the map with a green line). As for prices, they do not particularly depend on the areas, since the town is small. On average, at the beginning of the season, a one-room apartment will cost you from 1000 € per week. In July, August from 1200 €. Naturally, in the center it will be more expensive by an average of 100–150 euros.
It is also worth paying attention to areas such as Saint Antoine, Saint Claude, and La Pinède. They are, of course, more distant from the center, but here you will not be disturbed by city noise, and if you wish, you can also reach the center of Saint-Tropez by bicycle (they are marked on the map with a blue line).
Of course, the most picturesque and interesting for walking is the historical center.
What are the prices for holidays?
Even by European standards, Saint-Tropez is an expensive holiday destination. The biggest part of your budget will be accommodation, but food isn't cheap either. If you're on a budget, aim for June or September as prices peak in July and August, especially between 14 July and 15 August.
If you decide to save money on restaurants, I recommend renting an apartment or staying at a campsite not far from Saint-Tropez. For example, camping Toison d’or, here 6 nights in a two-bedroom bungalow will cost more than 1800 € in July. This campsite is located 5.4 km from Saint-Tropez. You can find your way around the prices for renting apartments and apartments.
As for hotels, at the beginning and end of the season you can find rooms from 150 €, in July August from 300 €. It all depends on the location of the hotel and the number of stars. I advise you to compare prices from different sites, as it is possible to get discounts and find rooms at more attractive rates. You can book a hotel on Booking –.
It is better to buy food products not in Saint-Tropez, but in supermarkets in nearby Cogolan. Dinner or lunch in a restaurant will cost, according to experience, from 30 € per person. Choose your restaurant carefully, compare not only prices, but also the menu offered. The greater the number of dishes, the less hope for quality.
Visiting museums and various excursions are not expensive and are often free for children under 12 years old. I will tell you more about museums below.
Main attractions. What to see
As for local attractions, the picturesque streets are the hallmark of the city. It is they, along with the beaches, that attract numerous tourists from all over the world. However, here you will also find museums, churches and interesting places to visit. Now I will tell you more about interesting places in the city.
Top 5
- Citadel. This place, in my opinion, provides an opportunity to plunge into the history of the city, understand its strategic importance, and get rid of the cliché of an ordinary fishing village.
- Excursion on the boat “Villas of Celebrities”. Where would we be without celebrities?
- Walk in the port, along the streets of the old city. How else? I think you should definitely look at the yachts, the cozy and charming streets imbued with the spirit of the South of France, as well as the parish church and its world-famous tower.
- Well, on Rue Clemenceau, I advise you to definitely look into the atelier and store of the famous Les Tropéziennes sandals.
- Museum of Gendarmerie and Cinema. This is a new museum and I encourage you to check it out because, along with the naval industry, cinema played an important role in the development of Saint-Tropez.
Beaches. Which ones are better
Saint-Tropez and its surroundings are simply an ideal place, in my opinion, for a beach holiday.
La Ponche (sand)
This is a fairly small (392m²) city beach.
In July and August, according to my observations, there are a lot of vacationers here.
Le Graniers (sand, pebbles, 392m²)
Located in close proximity to the city, close to the Citadel and cemetery. Therefore, you can get here on foot (about 20 minutes). There are usually far fewer holidaymakers here compared to La Ponche.
La Bouillabaisse (sand, 12043 m², length 503 m)
The beach is located at the entrance to Saint-Tropez. Many locals vacation here with their families. From the infrastructure, I noticed free parking, public toilets and showers.
Les Canoubiers (sand, 3350 m², length 194m)
Hidden behind a wall of bamboo, this beach is one of the most popular among locals. There is parking, public toilets and showers.
Les Salans/Les Salins (sand, 8924 m², length 600m)
Beautiful beach with great views. Parking, public toilets and showers.
Pampelonne
You also can’t ignore Pampelonne Pampelonne. Of course, from an administrative point of view, it belongs to Ramatuelle, but vacationers in Saint-Tropez often prefer this huge (more than 4 km) strip of sand.
Numerous restaurants and cafes are available for vacationers here. Although, in my opinion, plush has quite high prices. Parking costs 4€ per day, mattress rental from 24€, towels from 5€.
Churches and temples. Which ones are worth visiting?
Parish Church of Saint-Tropez (Notre-Dame de l’Assomption)
The construction of the church was completed back in 1784, and today it has become a real symbol of the city. Its tower, a beautiful combination of yellow and ocher colors, is known throughout the world. The central nave has 4 bays. The façade is decorated with a niche with a life-size statue of St. Trophimus.
I believe that everyone who comes to the city should at least admire the church from the outside.
Chapel of St. Anne (La chapelle Saint-Anne)
Chapel of St. Anna was erected in 1618 on the Mont Pécoulet mountain; it was here that sailors came before and after long voyages. The simple forms of the Provençal style give the chapel a special charm, which is perfectly complemented by cypress trees and breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Currently, the chapel is open on May 18 (last day of Bravado), July 26 (St. Anne), August 15 (Assumption).
Address: 21 Chemin des Bastidettes.
Chapel of Mercy
It was built by the Order of Penitents and is remarkable, it seems to me, for its domed tower and picturesque gates.
Address: rue Gambetta.
Monastery chapel La Chapelle du Couvent
The chapel was erected on the possible burial site of the remains of St. Trophimus, the patron saint of the city. Orthodox services are also held here in the summer.
Address: Avenue Augustin Grangeon.
Museums. Which ones are worth visiting?
As for museums, there are only four of them in the port town. However, I would recommend visiting them:
Tourist streets
Saint-Tropez is a relatively small city, and its center is even smaller. So, when walking in the heart of Saint-Tropez, you will quickly notice that all the streets can be called tourist. Of course, among them there are places that are more touristy than all the others.
For example, the small pedestrian street Clemenceau (rue Clemenceau). I’ll even tell you that there are pedestrian traffic jams here in July and August. In addition to the world-famous Rondini store-atelier (Les Sandales Tropéziennes), the street is simply filled with boutiques of local merchants and is the shortest road from Place des Lices to the port.
I would also recommend taking a walk along streets such as st. Citadelle (rue de la Citadelle), st. Portail Neuf (rue du Portail Neuf) and the adjacent streets. Here you will find picturesque views with typical local architecture. There will be something to capture in the photo.
What to see in 1 day
If you only have one day to visit Saint-Tropez, I can help you plan your itinerary. It's better to come on market day (Tuesday, Saturday). So:
I will make an important note for those with a car: try to leave Saint-Tropez before 18:00 (traffic starts) or stay in town for dinner, after which you can leave without traffic jams.
What to see in the area
I will tell you here only about the most picturesque places that caught my eye.
Port Grimaud - Little Venice
In close proximity to Saint-Tropez there is the port of Grimaud, a local small port. Be sure to take your camera with you and take a boat ride to experience the local atmosphere. However, in August it is better not to show your nose there (there are a very large number of tourists).
Ramatuelle and Gassin
When talking about the surroundings of Saint-Tropez, one cannot ignore the picturesque villages of Gassan and Ramatuelle.
Small streets will immerse you in the atmosphere of Provence, and impressive views of the surrounding area will delight photographers.
Food. What to try
Speaking of food, one cannot ignore Tarte Tropezin - one of the symbols of the city. The origins of this dessert lie with a Polish pastry chef who opened a pastry shop in Saint-Tropez in 1955. Brigitte Bardot tried this dessert during the filming of “And God Created Woman” and, according to legend, it was she who suggested the name “La Tarte Tropézienne”!
Nowadays, tender Brioche dough with a layer of butter cream is one of the favorite delicacies of tourists visiting the city.
Saint-Tropez has a very wide selection of restaurants: from simple pizzerias to expensive chic establishments. When choosing a location for your lunch or dinner, I suggest considering two factors. Firstly, the menu: the more dishes, the less chance of quality. Secondly, the location. In the port and surrounding streets, prices are quite high.

Holidays
For more than 450 years, an annual festival has been held in Saint-Tropez in mid-May. La Bravade. During festive processions, city residents wear red and white clothes (the colors of the flag of Saint-Tropez), and participants in the processions dress in costumes of sailors, military men, and participants in the costumes of townswomen or peasant women of the era.
This festival is dedicated to Saint Trophim, the patron saint of the city. The boat with the body of the martyr beheaded by order of Nero washed up on the local shores. So the image of a boat appeared on the city’s coat of arms, and believers began to venerate the saint.
During Bravado, a bust of Saint Trophim is solemnly carried through the streets. From time to time the priest stops the procession and the soldiers fire a volley from ancient muskets. If you have the opportunity, don't miss La Bravade, I find it a very interesting experience to mingle with the crowd of spectators dressed in red and white.
Safety. What to watch out for
There are no particular problems with regard to security in Saint-Tropez. It is enough to follow the basic rules. For example, when walking through the market, hide your money away and systematically close your bag. Do not leave your bag or wallet unattended, even for a few seconds. At night, avoid noisy companies on the street.
In general, it is enough to exercise reasonable vigilance and caution, as with any trip. Here, it seems to me, are all the recommendations in this regard.
Things to do
Shopping and shops
A trip to Saint Tropez is a great reason to replenish your wardrobe! Here you will find the latest collections of high fashion houses, as well as cozy boutiques of local merchants. Saint Tropez is, in a way, a lullaby for brands.
High fashion houses are concentrated mainly in the Place de La Garonne, here, for example, you will find Dior, Armani, Bottega Veneta, Valentino...
It is also worth taking a walk along streets such as Allard, Clemenceau, Gambetta, where most of the shops are concentrated. Among the local brands I would highlight:
- Les Tropéziennes (Rondini) - handmade sandals (average price for adult models 130 €).
- Be-store - shorts, espadrilles, belts. There are four stores of this brand in Saint-Tropez, each of which is dedicated to a specific product line.
- Espadrilles Tropéziennes are lightweight summer shoes made of fabric and leather. In the store you can also personalize your espadrilles with the artist's drawings.
- Les Senteurs Tropézienne - perfumes for the home. Perfume, scented candles and diffusers, aromatic compositions inspired by the smells of local plants and the sea. The collection of eleven perfumes “A Walk in Saint-Tropez” will remind you of your vacation and will be an excellent gift.
- Titamàlà - original costume jewelry, locally handmade.
In my opinion, prices in Saint Tropez are, of course, high, but at the end of the tourist season, in October, La Braderie de Saint Tropez has a big sale for three days. The city is again filled with crowds of tourists and the reason for this is very interesting prices
Bars. Where to go
Bars are open until 3 am and most of them are only open during the tourist season. Prices are quite high, for example, Coca Cola costs an average of 7 €, there are places where a glass of simple white wine costs 20 €.
Some bars have themed parties, but there are no establishments dedicated to a specific theme. I liked the bar of the Sube Hotel: very beautiful decor from the era of sailors.
Also, don’t miss Kelly’s Pub in the spirit of Irish pubs. Here is another list of my recommendations:
- Bar Chez Maggy (themed parties).
- Bar du Port (for an evening aperitif).
- L'Atrium Bar.
- Bar du Sube.
Clubs and nightlife
Nightlife is in full swing during the tourist season. In June, July and August all clubs are open every day until 5 am. In September the clubs are only open on weekends.
Entry, as far as I know, is free, but prices for drinks start at 20 €. Regarding dress code: For men, shorts, T-shirts and short sleeve shirts should be avoided. Women should prefer dresses. Here's a short list from me:
- Les Caves du Roy.
- Hotel Byblos.
- Le VIP Room.
Also common in Saint-Tropez is the concept of restaurants that gradually turn into real clubs as night falls:
- Brasserie des Arts. 5 place des Lices.
- L'Opera. Residence du Port.
- Le Quai. 22 Quai Jean Jaurès.
Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift
Saint-Tropez is a picturesque Provencal port town, famous for the cinema of the 20th century. Well, who doesn’t remember the blonde beauty Brigitte Bardot from “And God Created Woman”, the eccentric gendarme Louis de Funes and the random killer with a “dangerous” umbrella performed by Pierre Richard. Today this sunny seaside town has a reputation as a fashionable star resort. But this circumstance forever deprived him of the colorful Provençal seclusion, so beloved in his time by the great cohort of French film celebrities: Alain Delon, Brigitte Bardot, Yves Montand, etc. Now here you can dance on the tables, pour yourself over with champagne and break dishes, and not be shy about all of the above - this place makes you feel forever young, which is why they love it.
Magnificent pine groves and sandy beaches fringe the Saint-Tropez peninsula, which can be explored on foot along numerous scenic paths. In its surroundings there are villas of famous actors, artists, bankers and couturiers, and in the very core there is a narrow cobbled embankment, always full of people strolling, sunbathing and local aperitifs on the terraces of numerous cafes and contemplating rows of luxury yachts parked closely. However, if you turn onto the first street you come across in the Old Town, you will find many quiet, pleasant gastronomic establishments and shops with fragrant herbs, Provençal spices, marinas and handicrafts. In the evening, the embankment turns into a real vernissage and podium for the secular public, and all the relish of Dolce Vita should be found in fashionable restaurants and clubs outside the city - on the legendary beach de Pampelonne.
6 things to do in Saint Tropez
- Recognize cinematic landscapes and pretend to be Richard and de Funes at the same time.
- Visit the Butterfly House and learn more about Lepidoptera from around the world.
- Buy items signed by B.B. at Brigitte Bardot's boutique.
- Head to Pampelonne Beach and feel rich and famous.
- Feel the modest charm of the bourgeoisie during the Sailing Regatta or the Porsche Parade.
- Try mesclun salad in one of the pompous restaurants on the embankment.

History of Saint-Tropez
The city owes its name to St. Tropis (Trophim), a Christian martyr who was beheaded during the time of Nero. The boat with the body of the saint washed up on the shore of the bay, where he found eternal peace in the temple-tomb. In 1637, the inhabitants of Saint-Tropez repulsed an attack by 22 Spanish galleons.
On this glorious occasion, every year on July 15, Saint-Tropez hosts a colorful “bravado” procession, La Fete du Capitaine de Ville: a brass band marches through the streets to the cheers and cries of the crowd, and men of all ages gather in front of the city hall and shoot into the air from ancient guns.
But until the end of the 19th century, the city still remained a quiet, inconspicuous settlement of fishermen and winemakers. Until it was discovered by the impressionist brethren by pointillist Paul Signac: his peaceful, harmonious landscapes of the 1920s attracted Chris van Dongen, Pierre Bonnard, and Henri Matisse. Their works played the role of impeccable advertising for the European aristocracy, which now preferred the tiny picturesque bay to Nice and Cannam.
The second round of the resort's ever-increasing popularity was the filming of Roger Vadim's And God Created Woman in 1956, which introduced a new type of secluded bohemian existence between luxurious modern interiors and the sun-drenched cliffs and beaches of St. Tropez. Movie stars, directors and film crews flocked to the bay with new script ideas, instilling a new culture of riotous fun in the resort. So the town became overgrown with drinking establishments with dancing on the tables and the glory of relaxed permissiveness. Brigitte Bardot also celebrated her 40th birthday in Saint-Tropez - at Club 55 on Plage de Pampelonne.
Representatives of the fair sex will be interested in visiting Brigitte Bardot's boutique (on the road from Place es Lices to the old port), and you can always find something original in La Chemise Tropézienne (23, rue Gambetta).
Weather in Saint-Tropez
Entertainment and shopping
Saint-Tropez and its surroundings have both wild sandy and private, well-equipped beaches, offering ample opportunities for yachting, windsurfing, and water skiing.
At night, restaurants, music bars and cafes, a large number of discos and night clubs are open to the delight of guests and regulars. In the beach restaurant “Club 55” you will still find tables under canvas tents and blue linen tablecloths, as in the time of cutie Bardot, and the Apero & Music Live Port club will always delight you with live performances of world vocalists. Clubhouse Papagayo is for discerning cocktail tasters, Les Caves du Roy is the place to meet celebrities, and the best cabaret on the coast is Stefano Forever.
In the summer, the town has an amusement park, and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays there is an excellent market in its main square. There is everything: homemade sausages, seafood, cheeses and very beautiful flowers. The best place to swim in Saint-Tropez is on the beaches of Cap Camaras, which can be reached by boat. Relative privacy and clean water are guaranteed even in the highest season.
For shopping lovers, there is a promenade with boutiques of world-famous trading houses and fashion designers. High fashion from Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior, jewelry masterpieces from Gas André, decorative interior subtleties from Marinette, etc. The fair sex will be interested in visiting Brigitte Bardot's boutique (on the road from Place es Lices to the old port), as well as something the original always shows up at La Chemise Tropézienne (23, rue Gambetta). For men, Maison Blanc Bleu on Place es Lices is suitable. In the last week of October, Saint-Tropez hosts a citywide hyper-sale of clothing and accessories from fashion brands La Grande Braderie, at which time prices here do not exceed an acceptable 90-120 EUR for a quality item from BOSS or Versace.
Arriving in Saint-Tropez, the first thing you should do is go shopping for “Tropeziennes” slippers at the famous Les Tropeziennes store. These flat slippers are made from a variety of leathers.

Local kitchen
In Saint-Tropez, you should try the delicacies of Provence: a salad of dandelion leaves, chicory and herbs - “Mesclun”, olive and anchovy paste, seasoned with various spices - tapenade (with a slice of fresh or toasted bread), ratatouille, stuffed leg of lamb and beef simmered in red wine with herbs.
Bouillabaisse is the king of seaside Provençal cuisine; it is a very rich and well-seasoned soup made from a motley family of all kinds of fish and sea creatures (mullet, redfish, monkfish, sea scorpion, seafood, lobster, etc.).
At the local market you should buy olive oil, olives, garlic, herbs (thyme, rosemary, sage), lamb, seafood, truffles, macaroons, local baked goods and marmalade made from fruit juices. Try here the soft sheep's, goat's or cow's milk cheese Poivre d'Ane, the small aromatic goat cheese Buchette de Banon and the herbed goat cheese Cabri aux Epices.

Start your walk from the Old Town. Here, in the immediate vicinity of the port, in the Notre-Dame de l'Annonciade chapel (1568), there is the Musée de l'Annonciade art gallery, representing a rich collection of avant-garde artists (Fauves, pointillists, representatives of the Nabi group) who lived and worked in Saintes -Tropez from 1890 to 1950. Excursions from Saint-Tropez
Neighboring Saint-Tropez are the picturesque Provençal villages of Ramatuelle, Gassin and Grimaud, where it is pleasant to stroll along the colorful winding streets, admire the facades of buildings from the Templar era, look into a couple of artistic studios and enjoy a glass of chilled rose wine in a random cafe with blue shutters.
The resort town of Saint-Maxime, famous for its beaches and entertainment, is worth visiting for the unique Museum of Gramophones and Mechanical Music, which houses a collection of ancient mechanical musical instruments. And the charming Cogolin, lost in the des Maures mountain range, is famous for its workshops making smoking pipes, wind instruments, silk threads and woolen carpets.
