How to get from Narita airport to Tokyo station. How to get from Narita Airport to Tokyo city center Taxi and car rental services
- one of the largest in the world. It is equipped with the most advanced equipment, offers tourists a full range of services to organize a comfortable flight and serves a significant share of international passenger traffic.
Location
The map of Tokyo shows that Narita Airport is located in Chiba Prefecture, in the east of Greater Tokyo. The distance from Narita to the center of the Japanese capital is approximately 60 km.
Narita Airport terminals
By Japanese standards, Narita is considered a 1st class airport. It features three independent terminals, two of which have an underground station. All terminals are connected by free shuttle buses and trains, and you can get from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 on foot.
Let's take a brief look at what each of the terminals is:
What flights does Narita Airport serve?
Most of Japan's international flights pass through it, including transit flights from Asia to the Americas. In the ranking, Narita ranks second in passenger traffic, and in cargo turnover - first in the country and third in the world. In terms of workload, it is second only to the airport, which is located within the city and serves the bulk of domestic flights. Narita is located at a decent distance from the center of Tokyo. Narita Airport is a major international hub for several Japanese and American airlines.
Services at the airport
For the convenience of visitors, Narita Airport in Tokyo has information desks with free guides, areas for relaxation and waiting for flights, the largest Duty Free area, and a food court. You can see all this in the photo of Narita Airport. Tourists have the opportunity to order a luggage delivery service throughout Japan (the price of the service starts from 2000 yen, or $17.5) or apply for a tax refund on purchases (Innova Taxfree counters in terminals 1 and 2). There are several places near Narita Airport where you can stay while waiting for your flight.
How to get there?
Due to the fact that Narita is located at a respectable distance from the center of the Japanese capital, you will have to get there for at least an hour. This is the main disadvantage of this airport. However, to be fair, it is worth noting that there are several options for getting from Narita Airport to Tokyo:
- train. There are three carriers that provide rail services from Narita to Tokyo: Narita Sky Access line, Keisei line and JR line. The cost of the trip is on average 2500 yen ($22);
- express trains “N’EX” (Narita Express). These will take you to Tokyo Station in about 50 minutes. Modern carriages provide access to the Internet; travel tickets are sold at the ticket office in the arrival halls. The price of the trip is about 3,000 yen ($26.3);
- bus. A longer route, since the bus makes stops at all points. When choosing this method of transportation, consider the time allowance, because there are often traffic jams;
- Taxi. Due to the large distance to the center of the capital, the cost of a taxi will be very high (18-26 thousand yen or $157.5-227.5), not taking into account surcharges for speed limits and during rush hours.
Narita Airport in Japan is one of the largest in the world, serving most of the international flights arriving in the country. There are several ways to get from Narita Airport to Tokyo: taxi, public transport and rental car. Below we will tell you more about each of them.
Taxi from Narita Airport
You can get from Narita Airport to central Tokyo in about 1.5 hours by taxi. There are taxi stands near each terminal. As for prices, there are two types of tariffs: metered and fixed to Tokyo.
One of the most convenient ways to get to Tokyo is by taxi.
The minimum fare for a flat fare is 16,000 yen (~$145 in 2018) and depends on the zone in which the destination is located (there are 6 in total). In addition to this, the amount for traveling on a toll highway is added. If you prefer to take the regular road, you will need to pay for the entire trip using the meter.
Another feature of a local taxi is that it usually has a rather small trunk. If you have significant luggage with you, you will have to look for a so-called cargo taxi, which can cause a lot of difficulties.
You can order a taxi in advance through a specialized online service. On the website you can choose a car class: from an economical passenger car to a spacious minivan or even a minibus for a large group. And for the little ones there is a “Child seat” option.

There is a single price for it – 4000 yen (~36$). Tickets are sold at the airport at the JR East offices.
The high-speed train will take you to central Tokyo in less than an hour.
Narita Express trains run every half hour from morning to evening. The journey to the nearest Tokyo Station takes 50 minutes. From here you can go to any point in the city by train on the JR Yamanote line or by changing to the metro. Narita Express schedules and fares are available on the carrier’s website (www.jreast.co.jp).
Alternative option - Skyliner train. There are only two stations on its route: Nippori and Ueno. It will take you to the final Ueno in just 40 minutes. The ticket costs 2,470 yen and must be purchased at the airport (Kisei information desks).
To reach popular tourist areas, you can then transfer to the JR Yamanote Line. The price of a ticket on city trains depends on the distance to the desired station. For example, a trip from Nippori to Shibuya will cost 200 yen (about $2).
Check the Skyliner train schedule on the carrier's website (www.keisei.co.jp). There you can also see how to get to Tokyo's main stations.
The train station is located right at the airport

Car rental at Narita Airport
One of the most comfortable ways to get from Narita Airport to Tokyo is to rent a car. But this may well be a problem for foreigners in Japan.
The fact is that Russian or Ukrainian rights do not apply in the country. Even international ones are those that are made in the form of a special booklet appendix to ordinary rights.
There have been cases when travelers still received a car with their standard license, but here the situation is of the “how lucky” variety: usually car rental companies simply refuse to rent.
If you still decide to take a risk, then in terminals 1 and 2 there are offices of rental companies, where you can try to conclude an agreement immediately upon arrival. However, prices at the airport are usually higher, and there may simply not be any free cars.
To win on price [and this, however, does not guarantee receipt of the car on the spot due to the issue of rights], it is better to book a car 1-2 months before the trip. The easiest way to do this is through a car rental price comparison service. The system will analyze data on prices and rental conditions from companies operating near the airport and show all available options on one page.
In addition, when booking early, rental companies often provide good discounts, which will provide an opportunity to save additional money.
You can get acquainted with the prices and find a suitable car for the dates of your trip by following the link.

Tokyo Narita Airport was built to relieve growing passenger traffic at Japan's main airport, Haneda. Narita is located in the eastern part of Greater Tokyo, in Chiba Prefecture. The distance between the airfield and the city center is 75 km. Narita handles the majority of Japan's passenger flights and is the main transit airport for passengers traveling to Asia and the Americas. Narita ranks third in the world in terms of cargo turnover, and second in Japan in terms of overall load. For a long time, civil activists prevented the construction of the airport. The population was outraged because peasant lands in densely populated areas were confiscated to build the airfield. This led to the fact that when the airport opened in 1978, its operation plan was only half implemented. Only in 1992 the complex was completed and was able to serve passengers at full capacity. In 2004, Narita International Airport was modified. Now it is one of the most powerful airports in the world, which has two huge terminals and its own transport infrastructure.

How to get from Narita Airport to Tokyo
Narita Airport is located at a decent distance from the capital. This problem often becomes the subject of controversy, so periodically local authorities expand the transport interchange. At the moment, there are several ways to travel from the airport to Tokyo: high-speed train, bus, taxi and transfer.
The railway stations are located in the underground levels of terminals 1 and 2. For passengers arriving in the third terminal, there are free shuttles connecting it with T1 and T2. Trains of several systems run from the airport platforms to the city - JR East and Keisei Electric Railway. Both companies provide express trains, but the cost of their services is very different.
Keisei trains are divided into Skyliner express trains and budget trains. Express trains deliver passengers to the city in 50 minutes, making a minimum of stops. Inside, tourists will find comfortable seats and compartments for large luggage. Please note that seats are reserved in advance. The fare is 1,920 yen. Keisei budget trains make many stops, are slow, and have no luggage storage facilities. All Keisei trains are not suitable for passengers with large luggage traveling to the south of Tokyo, as they require several transfers from the city center. In this case, it is better to use JR East.
JR East express trains are the most expensive means of transport from the airport to the capital. Travel time depends on the specific train and varies from 50 to 70 minutes. The fare to Tokyo Central Station is 3,020 yen. Most trains operate non-stop, but some stop in the suburbs of Narita and Chiba. Passengers departing from the airport need to plan their route. After the trains arrive at Chiyoda Station, the route branches into two other directions - Yokosuka Line and Chuo Line. The first line takes tourists to Kanagawa Prefecture, the second goes to Tokyo, making several stops along the way. Seating on the JR East Express is also reserved. Tickets can be purchased at counters from company agents or from vending machines. There is a discount for passengers whose trips will be made within a two-week interval. It allows you to purchase a round trip ticket for only 4,000 yen.
It is better to plan your trip from the city to the airport by train in advance. Those who live far from Tokyo Central Station can take trains at Keisei-Ueno, Nippori and other stations. There are stations serving airport express trains in every district of Tokyo, so the ticket price and travel time depend only on the specific district of the capital, in where the tourist is located.
Bus service in Narita is well developed, with transport running at minimal intervals. The disadvantages of such trips are travel time of more than an hour and frequent traffic jams. You can get to central Tokyo for 3,000 yen. There are three main carriers, as a rule, their prices are the same, the main difference is in the route. For example, the Airport Limousine carrier delivers passengers only to central bus stations and some large hotels. Keisei Bus buses operate within the suburbs. C hiba Kotsu travel to Fukushima, Saitama and Yamanashi.
The taxi system in Tokyo is unique. Price tags depend not so much on the mileage as on the travel zone. You can find out the cost of travel in each zone on the spot, from the driver. The approximate fare for a trip to the center of Tokyo is 14-20 thousand yen. You also need to take into account travel time, rush hour and surcharge for speed.
A detailed diagram of public transport at Tokyo Narita Airport with route numbers and stops is presented in a separate section.
For those who don't want to navigate Tokyo's public transport, we recommend booking in advance. A driver with a name plate will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall, and you will know the cost of the trip in advance, because... it is displayed at the time of booking.

On the third level there are lounges exclusively for international departures. There is a large food area and a duty free zone here. On each floor there are several first aid stations and rooms for mothers and children. On the 3rd level there are several rooms for smokers. Cafes and restaurants are also located on each floor of the terminal.

Additional services
Narita Airport carefully monitors security. Most often, baggage inspection and document verification are carried out before the passenger enters the terminal. There is no walking connection between the terminals; to travel between the terminals, shuttles are used, which stop in the parking lots at the entrance on the first ground levels of each terminal.
There are many information desks around the airport where you can pick up a free map guide to the terminals. You can while away the time while waiting for departure at T1, where the largest duty-free zone in Japan is located.
On the third floor of T2 there are origami master classes, mini exhibitions and other entertainment programs. You can follow the schedule of events on the airport website. In the central building T1, on the 3rd floor, there is an exhibition of the Kabuki theater. On the fifth level of the central building T1 there is a transparent room - a Japanese radio studio. Anyone can listen to the broadcast and watch the guests in the studio.
Duty Free at Narita Airport
In the first terminal there is a huge area “Narita Nakamise”, which is entirely dedicated to duty free trading. The country has rules prohibiting duty-free purchases upon arrival, so visiting the duty free lounge makes sense only for departing passengers. There are a huge number of shops selling luxury perfumes, souvenirs, national costumes and locally produced food products. The most popular purchases are alcoholic beverages - their prices here are much lower than in Tokyo. It is also worth paying attention to the cosmetics kiosks of Shiseido and Kanebo, well-known and popular companies in the CIS. Instead of ordinary souvenirs, you can buy natural Japanese tea at affordable prices.
Tax Free at Tokyo Narita Airport
Tax free refunds are issued at Narita Airport if you have receipts with a purchase amount of 10,000 yen or more. Additionally, you should have a tax free form with you, issued at the store checkout. After the documents have cleared customs and received stamps, you need to go to the north wing or to the main building T2, 1st level. Global Blue boxes are located here. You need to fill out special forms and place them in the box. In this case, a refund will be made to your card.

Narita International Airport is located in Chiba Prefecture in the eastern part of Greater Tokyo and 75 km from the city center. After Tokyo's Haneda Airport became too congested, authorities decided to move most international flights to the new Narita Airport. In addition, the airport serves as the main transit point for passengers traveling from Asia to North and South America. It ranks second in Japan in terms of passenger traffic and first in terms of the number of cargo passing through it. The airport serves as a base for many airlines. These include Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and two American airlines - Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.
The airport serves as the main transit point for passengers traveling from Asia to North and South America.
The construction and development of Narita Airport is often compared in its consequences to the role of the Vietnam War in US history, as it led to a loud and protracted conflict between the Japanese government and the population of the country. The main cause of the conflict was the land, which the authorities wanted to buy from people for the construction of the airport, but were met with discontent and resistance. Subsequently, airports in Osaka and Nagoya were built at a considerable distance from the coast on artificial islands.
To this day, on the territory of Narita Airport there is a private house of a peasant who did not want to sell his land to the authorities.
Narita Airport terminals
Tokyo Narita International Airport is considered a first class airport under Japanese law. The airport has three independent terminals, two of them have their own underground station. Communication between them is carried out using shuttles and trains.

How to get to the airport
Narita Airport is often criticized for its distance from the city. The journey to Tokyo takes an hour by the fastest train, and even longer by road due to traffic jams.
By taxi
There are two types of taxis available at Tokyo Airport: metered and fixed-price. Cars await passengers in parking lots at all three terminals.
The cost of a taxi to central Tokyo is not at all pleasing to the wallet - from 18,500 to 26,500 JPY.
By train
The express trains are called Skyliner and Narita Express (N"EX), and they are very convenient for getting to the Tokyo districts of Omiya, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya and others. The cars are comfortable, and tickets can be bought at the airport terminal ticket offices. How to get to Tokyo
Due to the fact that the airport is located quite far from the center of Tokyo, it is necessary to accurately take into account the travel time based on what transport to get there.
Public transport
The city can be reached by two types of public transport: bus or train.
Buses
Buses from two major carriers, Airport Limousine Bus and Airport Express Bus, operate between Narita and city hotels. The duration of the trip is about two hours, because... Tokyo is a city of giant traffic jams. The fare ranges from $24.5 to $31.5 (in yen - 2500-3500), depending on the distance to the point of arrival. Tickets are sold at the company ticket office and at the tourist information office located in the arrivals hall behind customs.
Also, city buses run from Narita Airport to Tokyo City Air Terminal every day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. at intervals of 10 to 30 minutes. A ticket there costs 24 $ (2700) yen.
Another budget option is to use the Bee Transee and K'Sei Tokyo Shuttle buses, which take passengers to Tokyo Station. Their fares range from $8 to $15 (from 900 to 1,700 yen), plus the price of a K'Sei Tokyo Shuttle ticket includes the price of a 1-day subway pass (for $15 or 1,700 yen).
It is possible to get to the city center by train, which will greatly reduce travel time, because... The train will save you from standing in traffic jams. The railway line from Narita to the center of Tokyo was launched in 2010, which significantly relieved congestion in this direction.
Trains
The railway station is located directly under the airport building, on level B1. An escalator takes passengers and luggage directly to the ticket office. Next you need to choose which train to take:
- Narita Express - fast and expensive. Travel time is 50 minutes, arriving at Tokyo Central Station. Ticket prices range from $26 to $44 (2900 – 4900 yen);
Important! During high season, seats on the train are booked in advance.
Additional Information. When purchasing a ticket, foreigners receive a 50% discount upon presentation of a passport.
- Keisei Skyliner - similar to Narita Express, but the big disadvantage of this option is that it does not go to Tokyo Station, only to Ueno, where you have to make an inconvenient transfer with a long wait for the train to Tokyo Central Station. But if you need to get to this station, which is also located in the downtown, then this is the best option, because... these trains are also high-speed, but are much cheaper - $17 (1900 yen);
- Regular train - duration 1.5 hours, ticket costs 12 $ (1300 yen).
Important! Payment for a ticket from the airport to the city is only possible in cash.
Taxi and car rental services
Getting to Tokyo by taxi is not a cheap pleasure, because... Such a trip will cost approximately 180 - 210 $ (from 20 to 23 thousand yen). The cost of the trip depends on the traffic jams, so it may take a while. The average travel time by car is 1.5 hours.
Important! It should be remembered that taxis have small trunks, which can be a problem for travelers with luggage. In these cases, you need to call so-called cargo taxis. Any airport employee can help with this.
As for renting a car, this can be done right at the airport; branded counters can be found in terminals 1 and 2, in the arrivals hall on the 1st floor.
The companies that rent cars are:
- Nippon,
- Toyota
- Nissan
- ORIX,
- Times Car RENRAL.
They generally operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily; the cost of renting a budget car ranges from $55 to $85 per day.
Airport map
Narita consists of two terminals, which are essentially independent airports. On the map they are impressive in size. There is a free shuttle between them at intervals of 5-20 minutes; pedestrian communication between the terminals is not possible.
Terminal No. 1
Terminal 1 is a complex that is divided into a central part, a northern and a southern wing. So-called satellites are attached to each part (they contain gates for the boarding gate).
