“Munich – Berlin” is one of the most popular tourist routes, and questions about how to get there and what is the distance between these cities concern all travelers who find themselves in Germany for the first time. Munich residents themselves travel to the capital by train or their own cars. Residents of Berlin do the same if they want to visit Munich.
Yandex.Maps / yandex.ru
However, in addition to the railway network and highways, the cities are also connected by regular flights and, of course, bus routes. The nominal distance from to and vice versa is 585 kilometers, and how much time it takes to travel directly depends on the chosen transport.
Trains
You can get to the German capital by two types of trains:
- Expressway
- Regional.
The high-speed train marked “Ice” departs from the München Hbf platforms four times a day. The station is located in the city center, on Bayerstraße.

Transportation is carried out by Deutsche Bahn. This train takes 4 hours and 35 minutes to travel. The schedule can be checked at the station itself or on the portal reiseauskunft.bahn.de. Train departure times differ on weekdays, weekends and holidays.
The cost of travel on a high-speed train to Berlin will be 100-160 euros. However, for this train there is a “buy earlier, pay less” option. Ticket sales open 92 days before the train's departure; with the earliest booking, a trip in economy class will cost 45-50 euros.
To select a train travel option in general, that is, view all the necessary information on one page, you can use a service or another similar one.
In Berlin, the train stops at Central Station, which is itself a historical and cultural attraction and is included in every tourist guide to the German capital.
Regional trains are the transport that the Germans themselves use. Such trains take much longer to travel – from 6 to 7 hours. Night flights travel for 6 hours, which do not make some stops, and where they stop, they cost less. They depart from all three train stations in Munich, but it is more convenient to leave from the Central Station.
There are 10 regional trains departing per day, the first of which departs at 08:00, regardless of the day of the week or calendar date. The night flight departs at 00:26. The current schedule can always be found on the portal of the carrier, the Deutsche Bahn company. Or using a service for searching and selecting tickets.

The cost of a trip on a regional train varies from 60 to 90 euros. Pre-booking does not provide significant discounts, and, in principle, does not make sense. The ticket is sold standard by European standards, that is, without specifying a seat. Seated economy class carriages cost 60 euros on weekdays, and for a compartment with sleeping berths you will have to pay 90.
Buses
The bus is the most budget option for traveling to the German capital, but it is also the slowest. Buses travel on average 9 hours, taking into account possible complications on the road or changes in weather conditions.
This direction is served by the FlixBus company and several private carriers. What is better – to travel with a major carrier or to financially support a local entrepreneur by purchasing a ticket is up to each traveler to decide for himself. However, FlixBus buses are much more comfortable and cheaper than private transport.

In addition, the current schedule and prices can be checked at any time on the company’s portal. You can view information relevant for the time of interest about all departing buses and find out prices on the portal or another similar one.
All buses depart from the München ZOB Hackerbrücke bus station, which is located on Arnulfstraße. This station is one of the most modern in Europe and the best in Germany. Buses take passengers to the Central Berlin Bus Station.
The cost of the trip varies from 19 to 42 euros, travel on the green FlixBus bus costs from 19 to 22 euros. This is the cheapest option for getting from Berlin to Munich and vice versa, respectively.
Aircraft
Airplanes from two carriers fly between the two cities daily:
- Airberlin;
- Lufthansa.
By choosing an airplane, regardless of the carrier, you will reach the center of Berlin from the central districts of Munich in 2.5-3 hours. The plane stays in the air for exactly an hour, the rest of the time is required for ground administrative procedures and travel from the city center to the airport and vice versa.
Paul Rysz / flickr.com
The cost of travel will be 110 euros, but only if the tourist buys tickets in both directions at the same time. A high-speed train, from a financial point of view, is not cheaper if you do not consider the option of purchasing tickets in advance, but compare the fare at the regular fare. But at the same time, it is not more expensive than air travel, and from the point of view of time costs, traveling by air is the fastest, even taking into account ground procedures and the road to air terminals.
There are no night flights, but there are evening flights. Departure times vary and need to be confirmed on the portal. There you can also book tickets and receive an additional discount.

About an independent trip
Traveling around Germany by car is always good, and not just good, but unforgettable. Therefore, if you have available funds and the ability to drive a car, the choice is obvious - rent a car and travel to Berlin on your own.
A road trip along this route is ideal for your first experience of driving a car in Europe. There are no small country roads between Munich and Berlin that are not included in the navigation systems. Therefore, you don’t even need a paper map, which is better to take with you just in case. The road atlas is provided free of charge when renting a car at any rental office in Munich.

If you don’t stop or turn anywhere along the way, then:
- The distance will be 586-587 km.
- The trip will require fuel consumption of 47-50 liters, which will cost from 65 to 100 euros.
- The travel time will take from 5 to 6 hours, depending on the speed and stops.
The easiest way to find a suitable car in Munich is to use the service. The average price for renting a car will be 50-80 euros. As a rule, more favorable conditions are offered by rental points located near the Eastern railway station.
During the entire time I lived in Germany, I traveled along this route more than once, and now I will try to describe in detail how to quickly and profitably cover the distance between Munich and Berlin.
How to get there?
A) By train
My favorite way to get around Germany, and now I will try to explain why. Firstly, if you plan your trip in advance, you can buy cheap tickets - 45 euros one way. This, you see, is cheap even for Russia, let alone for Europe. Ticket sales open 92 days before the trip. Secondly, trains run daily, several times a day. Another advantage is that there is no difference in price between direct and connecting flights, so you can safely take a train without a transfer, as it is much more reliable (especially in Germany, where trains are often late).
The trip will take from 8 to 10 hours. This, of course, is quite long, but considering the comfort of the carriages with soft seats and clean toilets.
I always recommend printing purchased tickets, although this is not necessary for domestic flights.
Departure
Trains to Berlin depart from Munich's main train station, München Hbf, located at Bayerstraße, 80335 München, near the city center. The station is fully equipped with shops, kiosks, food courts and, of course, toilets.
Arrival
I always choose flights to Berlin Central Station, which is located almost in the very center of the city (address - Europaplatz 1, 10557 Berlin). There is a large amount of transport from there, there are many shops, luggage storage, rest rooms and food outlets.
If you know the location of your hotel in advance, it may be advantageous for you to choose other stations, for example Berlin Ostbahnhof (in the eastern part of Berlin), Berlin-Spandau, etc., but then the number of flights available to you will be reduced.
B) By plane
If you need to make a business trip that is paid for by the company, or your travel limit is unlimited, you can use Airberlin or Lufthansa aircraft. A round trip will cost you 110 euros, the travel time will be only 1 hour. Flights are daily, non-stop.
B) By bus
If you are looking for the most budget-friendly trip, it is best to take a bus. Ticket prices range from 19 to 40 Euros, which is in any case cheaper than by bus. The trip will take from 6 to 10 hours.
Departure
Daily services depart approximately every hour and a half from the station München, ZOB, Hackerbrücke at Arnulfstraße 21, 80335 München. This is the most modern station in all of Germany (you can check this on their website. There are not only cafes and restaurants, but also a large number of shops.
Arrival
Buses arrive either at the Berlin station, ZOB am Funkturm (at Messedamm 8, 14057 Berlin) or at the Berlin transit stop, Bahnhof Südkreuz.
Tickets can be purchased on this website
Thus, the choice of vehicle depends on what you prefer to save - time or money. Naturally, the fastest option would be to fly, especially since it will cost only 20 euros more than the train, which takes much longer. The most economical option in terms of money would be a bus.
The regular bus usually departs on the following days of the week:
- Sunday
- Monday
- Thursday
- Friday
- Saturday
