Turkish airports on the map. Main airports in Turkey. International airports in Turkey
The opening date of the giant Istanbul air harbor is approaching. According to the plan, the first phase of construction of the new airport INA (Istanbul New Airport) should be completed by October 29 of this year. It was recently announced that runway Nr 1, 3750 m long and 60 m wide, is ready for use. The world's largest and most modern light signaling system, including 34 thousand lamps, will be installed on it.
80 percent of all structures have already been completed, including, most recently, the baggage loading and unloading system. In the first phase of development, the capacity of Istanbul New Airport will be 90 million passengers per year. More than a hundred airlines will operate on it, flying to 350 destinations. INA Airport will have three independent, parallel runways.
Of course, the most important and interesting for all of us is the strategic and business aspect of the launch of this giant. What will change on the aviation map of the world?
As shown by the results of the activities of the national Turkish carrier THY (Türk Hava Yolları - Turkish Airlines), as well as the existing Istanbul Airport. Ataturk (IST), this pair has already become a major player in the global aviation market. The Turkish airline very quickly made up for lost time during the military-political crisis in the region and has now reached the level of transportation of the “big European three” - Lufthansa, Air France, British Airlines. Of course, we are talking about the carriers themselves, and not the groups. Likewise, the main Istanbul airport has restored its capacity and is comparable to Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris airport. Charles de Gaulle and the air harbor of Frankfurt am Main, slightly inferior to London Heathrow.
The complete return to business health of THY and IST is confirmed by data regarding transit traffic through this airport carried out by the national carrier of Turkey. In the first quarter, the number of tickets purchased for flights through IST increased by as much as 21 percent. If we talk about the markets of different countries, Russia became the leader here: +70 percent(!), then the USA: +50 percent, Germany: +35 percent, Great Britain: +30 percent. and India: +17 percent. Only the number of Chinese passengers grew not so significantly - by only 5 percent.
In the case of Germany and the US, growth was influenced by the recovery from the decline in passenger traffic in the previous year due to the above-mentioned reasons. This is confirmed by data published by THY. In the period January-February 2018, the number of transit passengers on international routes (abroad-abroad) increased by 26 percent.
The Turkish carrier and its hub make perfect use of the ideal geographical location when talking about transits from Europe (especially southeast) to Asia, or from/to the Middle East and from/to Africa. We have written about this several times on the pages of our portal. Due to its geographic location, THY has the most international destinations in its network of any airline in the world.
The main competition of the THY-IST duo are airlines and their mother airports from the Gulf region. Especially in transit traffic Europe-Asia, and also, to a lesser extent, Asia-North America, Asia-Africa. In the first of these cases, the Turkish player has a huge competitive advantage. IST is located significantly closer to Europe, Asia and Africa than the Gulf hubs. Emirates has relied on large wide-body aircraft, which account for one or two flights per day. THY operates narrow-body aircraft on almost all European routes. This has made it standard to operate three flights per day to all major cities in the world.
A consistent advantage of THY (and Ataturk Airport) is its low operating costs. It should be remembered that Turkey is not a member of the EU and treats its air transport as a national property, and it cannot be ruled out that the state supports it using methods that are not supported by EU rules. In this context, it must be said that the EU is already working on rules whose purpose is to exclude or limit the activities of companies in Europe that do not adhere to fair competition practices and/or are supported in any way by the state. But while these documents are in development, and even if they are adopted, the Turkish airline and its competitors from the Gulf countries will already take a strong place in the European market, taking advantage of their current advantages.
This also applies to the new airport. It goes without saying that the opening of INA will open up new and enormous opportunities for THY to develop its global connectivity network for decades to come, with a target capacity of 150 million passengers. Looking ahead, the Turkish airline and INA will strengthen their competitive position due to the growing operational constraints of European hubs.
What conclusions can be drawn from the Istanbul pro domo sua project? We must remember that the Turkish authorities decided to build a huge airport not so long ago. Then, when their national carrier has proven that it is able to develop dynamically and constantly increase the profitability of transportation, mainly transit, for several years, flawlessly taking advantage of the unique geographical position of its hub in Istanbul. THY emerged from the financial and economic crisis of 2007-2008 in excellent shape. It has shown its resistance to any challenges, including military-political crises that took place relatively recently.

Holidays in Turkey are deservedly considered among Russians to be a classic of foreign tourism. The country where Europe meets Asia, and modernity is intricately intertwined with ancient history, attracts millions of travelers from all over the world. It was the development of tourism that contributed to the fact that the country was covered by a whole network of airports. In which cities are they located, and how to cover the distance to the final destination - these are the first questions that a future vacationer asks.
How to choose an airport?
The list of airports in Turkey is amazing. The country has about 50 air hubs scattered throughout its territory. Among them are 15 major aviation centers near large cities and popular seaside resorts. The most famous international airports in Turkey are located in the cities:
Airports of Turkey on a map with names in Russian
These are high-tech, modern airports, where there is everything necessary for tourists: comfortable waiting rooms, online displays, free Internet access, numerous food outlets and shops, ATMs and much more.
Developed air services allow tourists to reach their desired holiday destination in a matter of hours. You will need a map in Russian.
What should you consider when choosing a route? Most often, your tour operator does this for you. There is no choice here; the arrival airport will be announced in advance. All you have to do is drive yourself to the airport terminal, board the desired plane and go to the Mediterranean or Aegean coast.
Another thing, if you are traveling on your own. Having studied Turkish airports on a map with the names of nearby cities, it would be logical to focus on maximum proximity to your place of permanent residence.
But please note that you can save a lot if you plan your route correctly. For example, to get to the sea coast, it is not necessary to choose resort airports. You can fly to the country on a direct flight “Moscow - Ankara”, and get to your holiday destination by bus, travel through the cities of Turkey, and see the country.
Want it faster? Local flights are at your service, for which the remoteness of the resorts does not matter.
Distance and transfer
There is no desire to make another flight, but long bus trips take away your last strength? Choose resorts in Turkey near the airport. After a tiring flight, you want to check into your room as quickly as possible and plunge into the warm, azure sea. You will still have to transfer to the bus, but the distance from the airport to the resorts will be significantly reduced. The trip will be short: from a few minutes to 1 hour depending on where your hotel is located.
Tour groups are provided with transfers in Turkey from the airport to the hotel. You won't have to pay for it. This service is included in the price of the tour package.
In resort towns, you can get to the airport of arrival by light metro or high-speed tram. You can use taxi services as well. You will be greeted by the driver of the car, whom you will recognize by a sign with your name. Some hotels in Turkey near the airport provide free mini buses to meet their guests.

At the height of the beach season, it receives 30% of all international flights. Tourists fly here who are going to visit resorts near Antalya airport - Kemer, Belek, Lara, Manavgat, Side. The same can be said about Side Airport, Türkiye. You will fly to the same Antalya, where a transfer awaits organized tourists. Free travelers go on a regular bus, which runs on a schedule and covers the distance to the airport in an hour.

A question that potential guests asked year after year: is there an airport in Alanya? The first aircraft began to be received here back in 1999, but the air hub was not in operation for more than 10 years.
Reconstructed new airport in Alanya - Gazipasa, which opened in 2010, initially served only local airlines. Since 2011 airport, Gazipasa, Türkiye – accepting both domestic and international flights. But Russian tourists can only count on charters in the summer season. There are no other direct routes from Russia yet.

The distance from the airport to Alanya is 37 km. The map shows the settlement of Gazipasha - an ancient settlement with fortresses, mosques and towers. Hence the name of the new air harbor of Turkey.
