Traveling around Italy: a trip from Venice to Florence and back.
Active travelers who want to visit as many foreign capitals and megacities as possible often ask the question: “What kind of transport is most convenient to get to another city?” Arriving in Italy, tourists often think about how to get from Venice to Florence, and from Florence to Venice. Our article today will help you decide on the appropriate mode of transport.
Train Florence-Venice
The most popular type of Italian transport (both among locals and tourists) is the train. The Venice-Florence route is in great demand, along which both high-speed trains and regional trains with express trains run.
The first option - high-speed trains, is represented by 2 main companies: Intercity and Eurostar. The first train leaves at 8:30, the last at 19:25. During the whole day, approximately 14 trains pass along this route. Using such transport has several advantages. Firstly, high-speed trains will take you to Florence (Venice) in record time - just 2 hours. Secondly, such trains rarely make stops, so you will not regret the time spent. Thirdly, you can choose the level of comfort of your train trip (Italian companies offer 1st and 2nd class carriages). Fourthly, such a trip is relatively cheap. For example, for a Eurostar train ticket you will pay about 40 euros.
The second option is express trains and regional trains, the journey on which will take much longer. The named types of transport operate only early in the morning and late in the evening. On electric trains and express trains, the travel time almost doubles and takes 3.5-4.5 hours. Along the entire route, the selected transport stops at almost every stop. Here you cannot choose the level of comfort - all seats have the same conditions for seating passengers. Express trains and regional trains do not always run on a direct route; you may need to change trains at some point in your journey and waste time waiting for the next train. The cost of tickets for this type of transport is not much different from the price of tickets for high-speed trains. A trip by train will cost approximately 35 euros, by high-speed train – 39-45 euros.
Trains run daily from Santa Lucia Central Station (Venice). The described modes of transport will take you to the main train station of Florence.
note
- Both high-speed trains, regional trains, and express trains offer passengers a high level of comfort. All trains have toilets, each carriage has soft seats, you can open the window, go out to smoke in a special place, and also enjoy the almost silent (and not shaking!) movement of Italian railway transport.
- We urge you to watch your local news before traveling by train. The fact is that in Italy there are sometimes strikes organized by workers in the railway industry. If you don’t want to stand for hours on the platform, or desperately look for all sorts of ways to return to the point of departure, then keep an eye on the situation happening in the country.
- Buying tickets is the most important part of travel. You can purchase them in several ways. The first, familiar to all of us, is to arrive at the station, go to the cashier and purchase a ticket for the desired type of train. Keep in mind that a regional train ticket is considered a general ticket, i.e. You can travel through it on any transport of the comfort level indicated on the ticket within 2 months after purchase. The second way is to buy a ticket at the cash register. On the electronic board you need to select the desired ticket and pay for it in cash. However, you should not count on this method, because, according to reviews from tourists, cash registers are most often not in working condition. The third, most modern and fastest way is to buy tickets online. To do this, go to the official website, select the desired date and type of train, and pay for the purchase with electronic money or a bank card. To obtain a ticket, you can use 2 methods: the first involves printing out a valuable purchase at the station in a special machine (Self Service), the second is to receive the order number, seat and carriage by email. You need to confirm receipt of the ticket from your email. When checking tickets by the controller, you just need to provide the received electronic order number (PNR). Keep in mind that if you buy round trip tickets at the same time, you will receive a small discount (about 15%).
- Holders of the Italian Inter Rail Italy Pass can travel from Venice to Florence (and in the opposite direction). In this case, you need to reserve your seats. This operation will require a small investment. Visit the station at least 2 days before your planned trip, present your travel card, book your tickets, pay the booking fee and don’t worry about not having enough seats in the carriage.
- If the link between Venice and Florence is a regional train, then you need to validate your ticket before traveling. If you do not do this, then the intercity purchase will be considered invalid, and you will be required to pay a tidy sum (about 100 euros) for travel without a ticket. The ticket must be validated at both the starting and final destination of the trip. Keep in mind that after composting it is considered valid for another 24 hours, i.e. on the way to Florence, you can “drop in” to Bologna, Padua and other cities, and then continue your journey without paying a single eurocent for the ticket.
Do not put off purchasing tickets until later. At the height of the season, you may be left without them and wait for your cherished trip for several tedious days. Additionally, there are often queues at Italian train stations, so try to arrive early to catch your train of choice.
Car adventure
The second most popular way to travel from Venice to Florence (and back) is by car. Keep in mind that this option costs more than traveling by train. Traveling along the highways of the boot country will be interesting for people who have already visited the state several times, and now want to see its internal structure and way of life, inaccessible to ordinary tourists. Renting a car in Italy is not a problem - there are enough companies of this type of activity here.
How to get from Venice to Florence by car? First you need to rent the vehicle you like. This pleasure will cost you an average of 50 euros. After this, you need to calculate the route. We multiply 20 liters by 1.65 euros, we get 33 euros. Do not forget that in a rented car you need to pay for the autobahn, i.e. travel on toll highways, which will cost approximately 20 euros. Add tolls to the amount received. Those. for an independent car trip from Venice to Florence (or from Florence to Venice) you will have to pay more than 100 euros.

- Having decided to rent a car, you should not rush to the first agency you come across. First, find out which car rental companies are more profitable. In order not to waste time visiting all the websites of companies that interest you, use the convenient European search engine www.rentalcars.com.
Bus travel
The third possible option for traveling on the route Venice-Florence (Florence-Venice) is to use the services of bus drivers. However, keep in mind that there is no single company in the country that organizes bus services between regions. Each region has its own carrier (or several carriers), providing travel both within the region and beyond. Unfortunately, searching for such companies (or individuals) can take a lot of time, and no one can guarantee the successful completion of the “search” event.
For the Venice-Florence (and vice versa) route we are considering, there are several partnerships (Eurolines, Baltour and SENA) that transport passengers to these cities almost every day. Buses will take you from one point to another in approximately 5 hours. The cost of this pleasure is 30 euros.
note
- Buses are not the most popular form of transport in Italy. Most often they resort to it during strikes carried out by railway workers. On such days, you may have difficulty finding and purchasing tickets. Another scenario is to travel while standing, constantly bumping into other passengers.
- If you get to Venice (Florence) at a quiet time (without strikes), you can safely arrive at the appointed time and buy a ticket before the bus departure.
- You can also use other intercity bus services. For example, buses with routes Naples-Prague, Florence-Budapest, Rome-Ternopil, etc., pass through Venice and Florence.
Around Italy by plane
The final and most unfavorable option for moving from Venice to Florence (and back) involves the use of air transport, i.e. airplane. If you do not rent a car, but call a taxi, for example, through the website, then such a long-distance voyage will cost from 80 to 120 euros; on weekends and before holidays, taxi drivers charge more, for example, during the carnival, a trip can cost 200 Euro.
Usually, when going on a road trip from Florence to Venice, they stop in Padua, Ferrarra and Prato. These cities are literally a few kilometers away from the highway. Even if you don’t turn towards them, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to avoid a stop in Bologna. The road passes through the center of this ancient city.
Traveling by car along such a route becomes a real “Italian adventure” if tourists are not in a hurry and have relative financial freedom. In the case where the budget is planned to the smallest detail, as well as the time, a car is not a convenient way to travel from Florence to the coast.
There is no direct highway between the cities as such; from Venice to Florence the distance is divided by two roads - “E35” to Bologna and “F13” after it. The total length of the route along this route is 255 km, if, of course, you do not leave the highway anywhere.
