Mallorca cities description. Holidays in the resorts of Mallorca. Classic in Mallorca
Mallorca is one of the most democratic and hospitable islands on the planet. It is no coincidence that both spoiled royals and romantic adventure seekers choose to holiday in Mallorca. It’s not for nothing that avid party-goers, tourists with children, and elderly couples fly to Mallorca. Mallorca is also welcoming to those who cannot imagine their vacation without an excursion program. The island has captivated many famous politicians, athletes, actors, artists, fashion models, and along with them millions of ordinary connoisseurs of nature. Protected coniferous forests stretching on rocky cliffs in the center of the island, mountain peaks rising majestically in the west, and snow-white beaches stretching along the entire coastline with many restaurants and shops. All this is amazing Mallorca, capable of giving a wonderful holiday to absolutely everyone. The main thing is not to miss when choosing a resort.

Next door to the king, or relaxing on a grand scale
It’s great to have a blast, although it’s better without children, you can go to the resort of Cala Major. Fashionable hotels, luxurious villas, and expensive restaurants are at your service. However, it seems that they have forgotten about kids here: Cala Major is practically not intended for children's recreation. On the other hand, you can turn a blind eye to this small drawback, entertain your child on your own, but live next door to the family of the Spanish king Juan Carlos I, because it is in the city of Cala Major that the Marivent Palace is located, which is the permanent summer residence of the royal family. By the way, members of a noble family visit Mallorca every year in August.
Another luxury resort is Illetas. Perhaps it is suitable for tourists of all categories and, mainly, for those who prefer a relaxing and comfortable holiday. The only drawback, so to speak, is the coastline, lined with concrete platforms. Although for particularly capricious vacationers, Illetas has a well-equipped fine-sand municipal beach.
Puerto Polenza is another prestigious resort that has long been appreciated by representatives of the world's bohemia. The Puerto Polença resort is widely known for its natural attractions: San Vicens Bay and Formentor Beach, located on the peninsula of the same name.
But this is unnecessary
Holidays from 42,000 rub. for two. The most delicious offers for summer 2019! Interest-free installments for tours! Popular resorts and proven hotels. , . Discounts for children up to 30%. Hurry up to book! Purchasing tours. Departures from Moscow - get a discount right now.
Mallorca for tourists with children
We advise tourists with children to go to the eastern coast of the island of Mallorca - to the city of Cala d'Or. The main feature and undeniable advantage of Cala d'Ora over other resorts is the presence of cozy bays with fine sandy beaches, protected by pine forests from the wind and the merciless sun. In addition, the town of Cala d'Or itself, with its houses painted in traditional Mediterranean white, is an amazingly beautiful and cozy place in Mallorca.
The beautiful Alcudia deserves special attention. This resort is a great place to relax with children. And all because the sea in Alcudia is warm and shallow, and in the city itself everything is provided for little tourists. For example, when going to Alcudia with a child, you will not have to take a stroller with you, because you can easily rent one. In addition, Alcudia has many historical places that are interesting for family visits.
You are also guaranteed a wonderful family holiday in the resort of Santa Ponsa. The obvious advantages of Santa Ponsa are its beautiful beach, awarded the Blue Flag, and tranquility at night, which cannot but attract caring parents.
Mallorca for water sports enthusiasts
In Mallorca, almost every resort is not averse to offering its guests to dive into the sea with scuba gear or catch a wave on a board. However, it is worth noting that Alcudia is a recognized center for diving and windsurfing. Thus, this resort is perfect not only for a family vacation, but also for a wonderful holiday for water sports enthusiasts.
By the way, lovers of the underwater world will certainly love Santa Ponsa, because this wonderful city has a diving club.
Youth Mallorca
The attention of young people, mostly German, Dutch and British, is attracted by an inexpensive resort called Arenal. Hotels in Arenali are generally no higher than three stars. Bars and restaurants, of which the town has no shortage, are always hospitable and welcome noisy and cheerful companies. Perhaps Arenal is a profitable find for young people, because other resorts in Mallorca will charge a significantly higher fee for a similar vacation.
The Cala d'Or resort is perfect for newlyweds. Although, most likely, two young hearts in love in Mallorca will feel equally good everywhere.
Quiet, calm and measured rest
For lovers of a relaxing beach holiday, the Palma Nova resort with its three gorgeous snow-white beaches is perfect. You can also find a quiet and relaxing holiday in Paguera, a resort located in the southwestern part of Mallorca. By the way, if you are a romantic and a nature lover, then Paguera should undoubtedly please you too.
Excursion Mallorca
Once in Mallorca, be sure to take time to explore the sights of this amazing island. To have time to see everything, use the services of excursion bureaus, which will be happy to offer you a wide selection of both walking and bus tours. And if you have plenty of time, then it’s better to take a walk on your own along the ancient streets of ancient cities, go deep into the island with a rented car or a rented bicycle.
Perhaps, it’s worth starting a tour of Mallorca from its capital, from the city of Palma de Mallorca. This city, founded back in the days of the Roman Empire, will appear before you in all its glory. Its ancient quarters with labyrinths of narrow streets are attractions in themselves that cannot be ignored. The famous Bellver Fortress and the amazingly beautiful Gothic Cathedral deserve special attention from tourists in Palma de Mallorca.
Mallorca is one of the largest islands that make up Spain, located on the Balearic archipelago in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. I believe that this is truly a heavenly place where you can enjoy picturesque landscapes, clean beaches and forget about all everyday problems.
This small island, whose area is only 3.5 thousand square kilometers, is slightly different from the usual resorts in Spain, and all because throughout its long history it managed to be at the disposal of the Phoenicians, Romans, and of course, the Arabs. Therefore, the culture here is really very rich!
My acquaintance with this wonderful island began from its capital - Palma de Mallorca. It is here that all its main attractions are concentrated.
As soon as I left the airport, I was struck by the long palm alley that led arriving tourists to the parking lot. The palm trees there are truly majestic, the size of three-story houses! You look and can’t believe your eyes that just 4 hours ago you were in a gray rainy city, and now you find yourself among such beauty!
And when you drive directly into the capital itself, your eyes begin to widen. You look to the left - a turquoise-colored sea, look to the right - a majestic cathedral, and right in front of you - high mountains.
Here you want to photograph absolutely everything, so I advise you to free up memory on your phone, tablet and camera in advance, because you will constantly have the desire to capture this or that place!
How to get there
There are two types of transport to get to Mallorca: air and water.
Of course, the most frequently used and comfortable option is air. In the capital of the island, Palma, there is an international airport, from where airliners of various European airlines depart every half hour and where they land just as often.
As for water communication, Palma has the main port of the island, where ships from different parts of Spain arrive daily, which is very convenient for tourists who spend most of their time on the mainland, for example, in Barcelona or Valencia, and on weekends go on excursions to Palma.
You can get around the island itself by bus, car or train.
By plane
The main and only airport of the island, which bears the name Son San Joan , located 8 kilometers from the capital Palma de Mallorca. This is where both external and internal flights arrive. The airport has very good connections with various European countries, including Russia.
Flights from Moscow
There are direct flights to Mallorca from Moscow (Domodedovo Airport): S7 airlines, the average cost of a round trip ticket is 20 thousand rubles. In addition, you can fly to the island on flights with one or more transfers, operated by the Spanish airline Iberia also from Domodedovo Airport for the same price (about 20 thousand rubles). It is worth noting that there are several other European airlines that fly to Palma with transfers, for example:
- Finnair;
- Lufthansa;
- Swiss;
- Czech Airlines;
But then the flight time will be more than 20 hours, which is completely inconvenient and not worth the money. Therefore, I advise you to choose a direct flight!
In this case, the travel time will be only 4.5 hours, so I recommend not saving on tickets and not spending the whole day on endless transfers.
You can compare prices yourself, for example.
How to get from the airport to the city
You can get from the airport to the city center either by bus or by taxi.
Of course, a more economical option is a bus. Routes No. 1 and No. 17 constantly run here, which will take you to Palma for only 3 €. If you need to go to the resort town of Arenal, then bus number 21 goes directly to its center from here.
But a taxi will cost much more - the average cost of a trip will be 20 €, and if you are traveling in a group, you can order a minivan for 40 €.
In addition, you can rent a car directly at the airport, there is a wide range of car rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Europcar). The average rental price starts from 50 € per day. Details below.
By ferry
So, the second way to get to Mallorca is to sail from another part of Spain by ferry or high-speed catamaran. The latter depart daily to the island directly from:
- Barcelona (4.5 hours drive),
- Valencia (4-6 hours drive),
- Menorca (2.5 hours drive),
- Ibiza (3 hours drive)
The average ticket price is 40 € and depends on the characteristics of the ship.
How to get from the port to the center
The port of Palma de Mallorca is located 6 kilometers from the city center; if desired and in good physical condition, you can walk from there to the center along the promenade, enjoying beautiful views and a light breeze, or take bus number 1 for only 1.5 €.
The bus stop is located next to the port. Of course, you can catch a taxi and go to the Cathedral (the trip will cost 10 €).

When is the season? When is the best time to go
According to local residents, the island of Mallorca reveals itself to tourists in all its glory at the end of spring and continues to delight the eye until mid-autumn. This is the best period for relaxation!
As for winter, the Spaniards believe that at this time of year their life becomes very calm, quiet and even a little boring. Although the winter weather here is favorable (about +14 °C), there is absolutely nothing to do. Because you can’t even lie on the beach, swim, or enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables. Therefore, it is not worth going to Mallorca in the low season (that is, from November to March). The only tourists on the island at this time are employees of companies who organize business meetings, trainings or business trips here.
Mallorca in summer
Like all resorts, the island of Mallorca is especially beautiful in the summer. It is at this time of year that the air and water temperatures reach their maximum and all the most beautiful flowers and shrubs of the island bloom everywhere. By the way, it was in Mallorca that I noticed a very large number of those same flowering evergreens, and this cannot but please the eye!
Of course, summer (especially July) is also vacation time, so there are a lot of tourists here, just like everywhere else. But since Mallorca is still an island and holidays on it are not cheap, wealthy Europeans and most often those over 35 or young families with children like to come here most of all. It is believed that holidays in Mallorca are quite calm and the pace of life is measured, so all young people who prefer nightclubs to evening boat rides go to the neighboring island, Ibiza. But at the same time, it cannot be said that Mallorca is a remote place suitable only for retirees: here you can also have fun and actively relax. But the most important treasure of the island is its incredibly beautiful nature! You will not see such landscapes as here anywhere!
By the way, the climate here is very pleasant; in summer the air temperature reaches about +30 °C, and in winter - +15 °C. But unfortunately, there is nothing to do in Mallorca in winter. Local residents say they experience a lull at this time of year. In fact, the island is inhabited by about a million people, so at a time when all the tourists go home, the island becomes empty and almost deserted. Residents calmly go about their daily affairs, and nothing special happens here. Therefore, I don’t recommend going here in winter, although if you are tired of the city bustle and noise, then here you can definitely be alone with yourself and nature. It’s not for nothing that the residence of the Spanish royal family is located here! Celebrities such as Claudia Schiffer, Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow also bought villas in Mallorca. Since Mallorca has catered to the discerning tastes of A-list stars, then you will certainly like it too!
Mallorca in autumn
The beginning of autumn in Mallorca is considered the velvet season, so until the end of September you can enjoy the bright sun and warm sea. But already from October the sun sets at 7 pm, and it becomes noticeably colder, the temperature reaches +7–8 °C.
Even from late October to early November, rain and thunderstorms become more frequent on the island. Therefore, at this time it is no longer worth vacationing in Mallorca.
Mallorca in spring
In spring, the high season gradually begins in Mallorca; already in March – April the air temperature reaches +20–23 °C, the warm, pleasant sun shines, and flowers begin to bloom. At this time you can’t swim yet, but you can already sunbathe.
The good thing about the island in spring is that there are still few tourists here, and you can have a quiet, relaxing holiday.
Mallorca in winter
Winter in Mallorca is a time of complete silence and serenity. The sun shines here quite often, and snow falls only in the mountains; it rarely reaches the lowlands. December is considered the month of rain, but January and February are characterized by pleasant, comfortable weather. The average daytime temperature reaches +14–15 °C.
The only caveat is that it is very boring here in winter, and this is the favorite time of year for retirees to relax.

Conditional areas. Descriptions and features
The island of Mallorca is divided into 7 main areas:
- metropolitan,
- central,
- northwestern,
- southern,
- southwestern,
- southeastern,
- northeastern.
Capital area
Located closer to the southwestern part of the island, this is where the main attractions and the residence of the royal family are located. If you want to be in the center of all the events, then this is the place to live.
The city itself is quite noisy, there are crowds of tourists walking around, it is very hot and stuffy during the day, so I recommend renting an apartment or staying in a hotel, which is located a few kilometers from Palma. I lived near the beach of Cala Major - this is a typical Spanish resort suburb, there are many hotels, cafes, shops, a large public beach and several museums. In general, an ideal place for those who like a relaxed, but not too boring holiday. Housing here will be more expensive than in other areas, since this is the capital, that is, the most important area of the island.
Southwestern region
This area of the island is the most densely populated. Here are located such large cities as Illetas, Portals, Santa Ponsa, Paguera. It is best to come here with family and children, because in these places you can relax and enjoy the tranquility.
It is also here that the large Bendinat golf club is located, so the area is considered very prestigious and not at all cheap.
Northwestern region
Along the shore, in the shade of trees, there are townhouses and villas, which can be rented for the summer if desired, and here you can also admire beautiful mountain landscapes. Why isn't this a heavenly place?
Northern region
This area is famous for its unforgettable views and pristine beaches. It is here that the highest point of the island is located - Cape Formentor, from which a magnificent view of the sea opens. Housing in this place will be quite expensive due to the extraordinary beauty of nature and due to the proximity to “star” villas.
Large cities in the area: Alcudia and Polença. There is a port near Poyença, from where you can sail around the island on a yacht.
Northeast of the island
It is distinguished by its beauty and serenity. Once you settle here, you will forget about all the problems and bustle of the city.
In this area you will find a large number of traditional farmhouses and farms, and you will also have the opportunity to chat with friendly locals, who may invite you to try oranges grown in their garden or their homemade jamon (cured pork).
Southeast
It is essentially very similar to the northeast, agriculture and sailing are also common here, so if you want to get to know local life better and taste fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood, as well as immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the island, get acquainted with its cultural and historical component, then this is a great option!
Southern part of the island
But it is famous for its long beaches, sports bars and noisy discos. The largest resort town is Arenal. This is where the largest water park on the island is located, an amazing aquarium with sharks and stingrays, and many bars. The place is considered quite budget-friendly for recreation, so all young people live in this part, and accordingly, the prices for accommodation here are not bad compared to costs in other areas.
If you like a bright, cheerful holiday, then this is the place for you. And just to the south is the longest beach of the island - Es Trenc. It is distinguished by snow-white sand and a light blue sea.
central part
These are picturesque estates, almond orchards, pastures and olive fields. Another great place for a relaxing holiday, while being only half an hour from Palma.
Here is the large city of Inca, which is famous throughout the world for the production of high-quality leather goods, as well as the city of Sineu, which is definitely worth a visit to look at the magnificent churches and the former royal palace, as well as go to the largest fair on the island, which is held there on Wednesdays
I usually look for hotels on Booking, but you can check if there is a more attractive price somewhere.
Offers for renting private apartments can be viewed here.
What are the prices for holidays?
As I mentioned earlier, holidays on the island of Mallorca can be classified as luxury, and therefore here you will find hundreds of villas and apartments for rent, the price of which starts from 1.5 thousand € for 10 days.
In principle, if you compare this price with hotels, the difference will be insignificant. For the same 10 days in a 3-star hotel in any area of the island, you will pay an average of about 1.7 thousand €, and in a 5-star hotel - about 4 €.
If you consider that in your apartments you will cook on your own, and in hotels you will use the all-inclusive service, then your costs will be approximately the same.
Therefore, it is up to you to decide what is more convenient, but personally, I lived in a good 3-star hotel, where, in addition to all-inclusive meals, there is a free gym, bar, swimming pool and, of course, themed parties!
TOP 5 best hotels on the island
I would like to present to you my TOP 5 best hotels on the island:
- Globales Simar 4* (from 1.7 thousand € for 10 days for two).
- Barcelo Ponent Playa 3* (from 1.3 thousand € for 10 days for two).
- Globales Palmanova 4* (from 2.1 thousand € for 10 days for two).
- Insotel Cala Mandia Resort & Spa 4* (from 4.2 thousand € for 10 days for two).
- Blue Bay Hotel 3* (from 1.2 thousand € for 10 days for two).
You can find out about prices for ready-made tours (with flights, transfers, accommodation and insurance) to hotels of different categories in the Travelask section.
Expenses
So, if you decide to stay at a hotel, then there will be no problems with food, and if you decide to rent an apartment or villa, then you have the option of shopping in supermarkets, of which there are quite a few on the island. One of the most popular, which often catches my eye, is Eroski. This is a common supermarket chain in Spain where you can buy everything from bread to hand cream at average Spanish prices.
If you buy groceries for a week, the average bill will be about 60 €. You can also visit restaurants and cafes, which will be quite expensive, considering that the average bill will be 50–60 €.
You can go on excursions either independently or with a guide. Mallorca is a small island; you can get from Palma to Alcudia in just an hour and a half, that is, traveling the length and breadth of the island in one day will not be difficult.
You can rent a car for 50–70 € per day and go explore the island yourself, or you can travel by bus for only 6 €. A group excursion with a guide on your own rented bus will cost approximately 100 €. A trip around the island by taxi will cost about 80–90 €.
Main attractions. What to see
Mallorca is famous for its variety of attractions and incredibly beautiful places that you must visit.
If you like to learn all the smallest details and interesting facts about certain attractions, you can hire a guide or book a full-fledged excursion. And if you like to independently walk through beautiful places and discover something new on your own, then you can explore everything on your own.
It is worth choosing a day for the excursion in advance; it is advisable to select one of the weekdays (except Friday), since on weekends the locals begin to have a siesta and rest, and there are too many people on the streets who will prevent you from taking a good look at everything. Bad weather is extremely rare in Mallorca, so you shouldn’t be afraid of rain and cold weather, but you can still check the forecast before your walk, just in case.
The island's capital, Palma, is not very large, so you can walk around the city and see the main attractions.
The map below shows the main tourist spots, museums, galleries, bus stops and more.
I bring to your attention my option for one day in the capital of the island, Palma, I advise you to travel by Citysightseeing tourist bus (ticket price 18.5 €):
- 10:00 - we go to Bellver Castle, which is located a couple of kilometers from the city. We will spend about 2 hours here.
- 12:00 - we head to the Spanish village.
- 13:30 - we will stop for lunch at the signature restaurant Sadrassana Restaurant Cocteleria (Placa Drassana, 15).
- 15:00 - we go to the cathedral. Since this place is considered the main attraction of the city, we will spend about 2 hours here.
- 17:00 - we’ll go out to the main tourist streets of Palma and take a walk, go to the Rivareno ice cream parlor (Plaza Llotja, 1) and enjoy the most delicious cold dessert on the island.
- 20:00 - we will have a seafood dinner at the La Parada del Mar restaurant (Avenida Joan Miro 244 Marivent) and celebrate the end of a great day with a glass of sangria.
Top 5
Below I will give a list of places that, in my opinion, are definitely worth visiting in Mallorca to truly experience the atmosphere and culture of the island.
Cathedral
It is one of the most iconic buildings on the island of Mallorca. The cathedral began to be built in the 13th century, so now it is officially declared a cultural and historical monument of the island. This place is truly extraordinary!
Inside, the cathedral is decorated with colored stained glass windows by various artists, the main altar with four columns, which is decorated with a canopy made by Gaudi himself. It is also home to one of the largest organs in Europe. Agree that this place cannot be ignored!
Address: Plaza Almoina, s/n, 07001 Palma de Mallorca.
Opening hours: Monday to Friday from 10 to 18:15.
Ticket price: 7 €/person.
Cape Formentor
This is one of the most visited places on the island! To visit Mallorca and not come to Formentor is a real crime. Formentor is located near the town of Poyensa and its main port. Its length is about 300 meters above sea level, so the views here are incredible: they will take your breath away. It is impossible to explain, you need to appreciate it with your own eyes!
Address: Cap de Formentor.
Opening hours: 24 hours a day.
Free admission.
Bellver Castle
A couple of kilometers from the city of Palma, on the top of a hill, is the medieval castle of Castell de Belver. Its peculiarity lies in the fact that it is the only round Gothic castle in Europe built in the Middle Ages.
It used to be the summer residence of the King of Spain, and later served as a prison, whose prisoners included such famous personalities as the writer Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos and the widow of King Jaime III. The castle has a large observation deck, which offers beautiful views of Palma and its surroundings.
Address: Carrer Camilo José Cela, s/n, 07014 Palma.
Opening hours: 8:30-20:00.
Ticket price: 2.5 €/person.
Spanish village
There is a wonderful place in Palma where tourists have the opportunity to see the most important buildings in Spain and feel the atmosphere of different cities. This place is called the Spanish Village.
In addition to the main attractions, you can visit small souvenir shops and cafes with delicious tapas.
Address: Calle Poble Espanyol, 55.
Opening hours: from 9 to 19:00.
Ticket price: 8 €/person.
Natura Park
This beautiful nature reserve is just half an hour's drive from Palma and is home to dozens of different species of animals and birds from all over the world. The park is outdoors, shaded by trees, and includes several trails.
Here live tigers, monkeys, porcupines, raccoons, turtles, flamingos and even lemurs, which you can feed by hand! This is an ideal place to relax with children, as well as for those who are not indifferent to our little brothers!
Address: Carretera de Sineu, Km 15,400, 07142 Santa Eugenia.
Opening hours: from 10 to 17:30.
Ticket price: 9 €/person.
Beaches. Which ones are better
Mallorca is an ideal place for a beach holiday; it is on this island that there are dozens of the best beaches in Spain, and what about Spain, the whole world! In fact, no matter what beach you come to here, it will definitely be quiet, cozy and clean. Even not far from Palma in the resort areas where thousands of tourists vacation, they are very worthy! But the best places to soak up the sun and enjoy swimming in clear sea water are secluded coves, of which there are many in Mallorca.
As I wrote above, I was vacationing in the Cala Mayor area, a few kilometers from the capital, and one day, quite by accident, I wandered into a cove where there was a small beach, and the sea there was crystal clear! There weren’t very many vacationers there, mostly locals and tourists like me, who most likely also found this piece of paradise by chance.
And yet I will give a list of the best of the best beaches in Mallorca that are worth visiting if only to understand what heaven on earth is.
Beach Cala S "Almunia
This beach is located in the bay of the town of Santanya and is surrounded by rocks; serenity and tranquility reign here. By the way, the beach has all the conditions for diving, and the soft azure waves will allow you to enjoy the sea to the fullest. But it is worth considering that the infrastructure on the beach is not developed, so there are no restaurants, no toilets, no showers and changing cabins.
The type of coating is pebble, the entry into the water is gentle.
Address: Diseminado Poligono 3, 594, 07690 Santanyí.
Cala Mondragó beach
Another truly heavenly place in Mallorca. The beach is located on the territory of the natural park of the same name among pine trees and rocks. Even though this place is quite popular, you can enjoy peace and quiet here. By the way, this beach is shallow, so it is perfect for families with children. It is possible to rent umbrellas and sun loungers here, and there is also a cafe where you can buy soft drinks and snacks.
The type of beach is sandy, the entry into the water is gentle.
Address: Cala Mondragó, Balearic Islands.
Beach Es Trenc
The length of Es Trenc is 2 kilometers. Its peculiarity is that it is the only beach on the island that has not been affected by urbanization, so it looks very exotic and is ideal for romantic dates and walks. You can also rent umbrellas and sun loungers here.
The shore is sandy, the entry into the water is gentle.
Address: Ma-6030, 68, 07639 Mallorca, Illes Balears.
Beach Playa de Formentor
Formentor beach, as you may have guessed, is located near the famous cape of the same name. And, of course, it is also famous for its beauty and wonderful views. The beach stretches for one and a half kilometers, it is surrounded by pine trees, under which it is pleasant to lie down in the summer heat. The sea here is shallow and very clean, and near the beach there are dozens of cafes and restaurants where you can have a delicious lunch. Prices in establishments vary, the average bill for lunch will be about 10–15 €.
Beach type: sandy, gentle entry into the water.
Address: Carrer Zona Formentor, 66A, 07460.
Beach Cala de Sa Calobra
And to top it off, perhaps the most magical bay on the entire island, where a small pebble beach is located between the rocks of the Sierra de Tramuntana. This place is definitely worth getting to! Once you see the splendor that Sa Calobra offers, you will forever keep in your heart the memories of that wonderful day when you arrived here! But it is worth noting that there are no amenities on the beach, so it is advisable to take care in advance and take everything you need with you.
The shore type is rocky, the entry into the water is gentle.
Address: Carrer Port De Sa Calobra.
Churches and temples. Which ones are worth visiting?
Despite the fact that Mallorca is an island, there are quite a lot of churches and monasteries here. By the way, services are held in all the existing ones, and any tourist can visit these temples and admire their interior decoration.
Church of St. Francis
The church is located in Palma, it was built in the 13th century, better known as a Gothic monastery that houses the tomb of the Catalan philosopher Ramon Llull.
Opening hours: 9:30–12:30 and 15:10–18:00.
Address: Basilica de Sant Francesc, 07001 Palma, Islas Baleares.
Monastery of Senhora de Cura
This monastery is located on top of a half-kilometer hill in the Randa Valley. Its distinctive feature is that most of the island is visible from here, and a bar and observation deck were recently opened here. This place is worth visiting for great views and great photos.
Opening hours: 9:30–18:00.
Address: Puig de Randa, S/N, 07629 Randa, Illes Balears.
Monastery of San Salvador
This is a former monastery building, which is located on the highest hill of Mallorca, near the town of Felanitx. Previously, monks lived here, and now the monastery is a favorite place for pilgrims. From it you can see the entire eastern part of the island.
Opening hours: 8–20:00
Address: Santuari de Sant Salvador, 07208 Felanitx, Islas Baleares.
Monastery of Luc
This medieval monastery is very revered by the residents of Mallorca; it is considered the religious center of the island! There are wonderful gardens here, as well as a large museum. There is even an inexpensive hotel next to the monastery, and all because it is very beautiful here and the picturesque Sierra de Tramuntana mountains are nearby.
Opening hours: 10–13:30 and 14:30–17:00

Museums. Which ones are worth visiting?
There are quite a few museums in Mallorca, perhaps because the incredible nature here compensates for all the cultural institutions here. Below I have selected a few of the most interesting of them, which are really worthy of the attention of tourists.
Museum of Ceramics
In the northeast, not far from Palma, is the small town of Sa Cabaneta, which is considered the center of ceramics production. A museum opened here in 2002, displaying around a thousand traditional Mallorcan ceramics that are worth seeing. The museum houses a pottery school and various souvenir shops.
Museum address: Carrer del Molí, 4.
Free admission. The museum is open from Monday to Friday from 9 to 13:30.
Raiha Estate
12 kilometers from Palma on the way to the town of Sawyer is a beautiful manor house, which is an object of historical and artistic value in Mallorca. Previously, there was a Moorish building here, and after several changes of owners it came to the Count of Montenegro and was ennobled. There are incredibly beautiful landscapes, large gardens and beautiful architecture.
Museum address: Palma - Sóller Road, km. 12.2 07110 Bunyola.
Free admission.
Shoe Museum
Mallorca produces very high quality leather goods, including shoes. In 2010, a museum on this topic was opened in the city of Inca; various traditional exhibits are presented here, and temporary exhibitions with samples of various leather products are often held here.
Museum address: Antiguo Cuartel General Luque, Avenida del General Luque, 223.
Free admission. Muse It is open from Monday to Friday from 10 to 14:00, and also from 16:00 to 20:00; on Saturday the museum is open from 10 to 13:00.
Parks
The island of Mallorca can be called one big park, wherever you go you will be surrounded by small picturesque bays, green spaces, majestic mountains and endless open spaces. But still, the island has several national parks and nature reserves worthy of attention.
Parc Natural de Mondrago
It is pleasant to walk in this park during the intense heat, because numerous coniferous trees will shelter you from the scorching sun. There are several specific routes, walking along which you can meet forest inhabitants.
Address: Sudlich von Ma-19 zwischen s"Alqueria Blanca und Portopetro.

Parque natural s"Albufera de Mallorca
Here you can enjoy the singing of beautiful birds, as well as watch them in special houses, sit on the bank of a small river and admire its local inhabitants, and, of course, take great photos.

Nearby Islands
If you are vacationing in Mallorca, I advise you to choose a day or a whole weekend and devote it to a trip to Ibiza.
Balearia ferries depart from the main port of Palma to the port of Ibiza several times a day. The duration of the trip is approximately 3-4 hours, the average ticket price ranges from 50 to 70 euros per person. Ferries from the Transmediterranea company also run from Mallorca to Ibiza, but please note that they only run on Sundays in the summer.
Details and schedule can be found on the company's official website.
In Ibiza, you can walk around the island's capital of the same name and look at its protective walls, which were built here in the Middle Ages. It is also worth visiting the Punic Necropolis, and be sure to visit the picturesque bay of Cala d’Hort.
Food. What to try
At first you might think that there are no traditional dishes in Mallorca, and that everyone there eats the usual Spanish gazpacho, tapas and tortillas. But I was surprised when I found out that this small island has its own national dishes that you cannot try on the mainland.
Mallorquina soup
It consists of a broth with vegetables and pork and is served with sliced bread.
The soup is incredibly tasty and very filling, which is why it is so loved by locals.
Tumbet
It contains vegetables, namely potatoes, eggplants and onions.
And also add meat or fish to taste.
Sobrasada
Be sure to try it - it is a moderately spicy sausage made from minced pork and bacon, very reminiscent of chorizo, popular in Spain, since their cooking technology is very similar.
Ensaimada
And for dessert, don't forget to enjoy this delicious Mallorcan layer cake. It is rightfully considered the most favorite sweet of local residents.
The ensaymada dough is airy, melting in your mouth, the pie itself is filled with whipped cream or delicate syrup, and the top is generously sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Beverages
Popular local drinks include liqueurs: Herbas secas (dry) and Herbas dulces (sweet). They are infused with anise with the addition of various aromatic herbs.
A very popular aperitif on the island is Palo, made by mixing sweet caramel with bitter cinchona bark.
Here I will give a list of the best restaurants on the island:
- Es Raco d'es Teix (average bill is 50–70 €);
- Salvia Restaurant (average bill is 20 €);
- A ma Maison (average bill is 30 €);

- Restaurante Peix Vermell (average bill is 40 €)
And a few more establishments with prices.

- Forn de Sant Joan.
Holidays
As the locals joke, in Mallorca every day is a holiday! And this is completely justified: the wonderful climate, beautiful nature and endless sea help ensure that the inhabitants of the island are always in a great mood. But there are also several official holidays here.
Carnival of Sant Rua
A special holiday in Mallorca is the Sa Rua carnival. Here it is held in winter, in the first half of February.
Decorated residents in costumes take to the streets of the capital and organize a procession. The carnival is held before the start of Catholic Lent.
Mallorca Day
This holiday is celebrated on September 12; it was adopted by King Jaime II back in 1276, when the island of Mallorca was liberated from Muslims.
On this day, concerts and fairs are organized on the island.
Safety. What to watch out for
The island of Mallorca seemed to me a very calm and safe place. Of course, you shouldn’t rule out pickpocketing, which is widespread in Europe, but in general, walking around Palma and its surroundings in the evening is not at all scary, because in the summer life here is in full swing until late at night.
In large stores and supermarkets you will definitely not be deceived, and in small souvenir shops you can recalculate your purchase amount and the change received, just in case, although in general it is not common here to openly profit from tourists.
Therefore, in Mallorca you should not be wary of anything serious, but basic simple safety rules should still be followed.
Things to do
Mallorca has a lot of things to do, you can explore all the beaches of the island and go snorkeling, or you can immerse yourself in its cultural life and visit the most important museums, temples and other historical attractions of the island.
You can also go to Cape Formentor, admire the wonderful scenery and arrange a photo shoot there. Or go to the eastern part of the island to meet the owners of local farms and try their traditional dishes. Don't forget about shopping; you should definitely go to the center of leather goods - the city of Inca. There are a lot of options, choose what you like and enjoy your vacation!
Even though Mallorca is a fairly small island, shopping here is a pleasure! And all because here you can find exclusive things that are produced only in the Balearic Islands!

Shopping and shops
Even though Mallorca is a fairly small island, shopping here is a pleasure! And all because here you can find exclusive things that are produced only in the Balearic Islands!
An excellent example is the traditional summer sandal - avarki. The neighboring island of Menorca is considered their homeland. They are made from genuine leather, in various colors - standard plain or decorated with beads, bright prints, and rhinestones. In Mallorca they are sold both in small shoe stores and in tanneries, for example in the city of Inca. These unusual sandals can be a great souvenir for family and friends, and will look great with both shorts and flowy dresses. Their cost varies depending on the materials from which they are made, but the average price of avarok is around 30 € per pair.
And this is where the famous artificial pearl factory is located. Majorica . If you find yourself in a company store, you definitely won’t be left without a purchase! Pearl beads and bracelets, earrings and pendants are distinguished by their elegance and excellent quality. Prices for pearls vary, for example, the average cost of a pearl necklace is about 300 €, but a pearl bracelet will cost you 100 €. By the way, the factory’s products have a 10-year warranty!
Of course, don’t forget about leather products. Head straight to the city of Inca, where leather factories and shoe and accessory shops are located at every turn. Popular shoe manufacturers here are: Camper, Bestard, Jaime Mascaro, Barrats, Tomeu, Bestard.
In Palma, go shopping in the areas: A vinguda Jaume III And Passeig des Born, as well as many shops you will find on the pedestrian street around Plaza Mayor. The tourist map of Palma, where all the main streets are marked, will again help you not to get lost.
As throughout Spain, the most popular shopping center here is considered El Corte Ingles (Address: Alexandre Rosselló, 12-16). There are 3 stops near the shopping center:
- 422 Grans Magatzems (buses no. 1, 15, 23, 30 stop here).
- 195 Grans Magatzems (buses no. 2, 6, 12, 19, 41, 46).
- 48 Grans Magatzems (buses no. 7, 9, 10, 14, 16, 24).
And another 2 kilometers from Palma there is a large shopping mall Porto Pi(Avinguda de Gabriel Roca, 54). There are 2 stops next to it:
- 65 Porto Pi (buses No. 3, 20 stop here).
- 1127 Porto Pi (bus no. 1).
Sales in Mallorca traditionally take place in the winter from January to March and in the summer from July 1st to the end of August.

Extreme Sports
If you love water sports, such as diving, surfing, snorkeling or windsurfing, then Mallorca is the perfect destination for you. After all, it is here in the resort of Alcudia that the water sports center is located. This is an excellent holiday destination for those who prefer an active holiday.
For more than 20 years, the school has been offering travelers training in rowing, windsurfing, basic navigation, and sailing. In addition, guests of the center can go paragliding and mountain biking. And if you are interested in yachting, you can take an introductory course here. In general, you definitely won’t be bored!
Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift
From the island of Mallorca you can bring a lot of original gifts to your friends and family. You can buy the traditional summer sandals that I wrote about above, by the way, here you can even buy a magnet in the shape of such sandals! Be sure to take an ensaymada cake with you, which can be stored for 2-3 days if unopened, and please your friends with this delicacy in the first days after arriving home (average price per kilo is 7-10 €).
And don’t forget that high-quality leather goods are made in the city of Inca, so feel free to buy bags, belts and shoes.
How to get around the island
There are different ways to move around the city and the island itself.
The most interesting one is on the island's historic electric train. It starts from the Palma de Mallorca train station (Carrer Eusebi Estada, 1), travels along the island, winding between mountains and plains, and stops at the Sawyer train station.
In addition, the island has high-speed trains that run on several routes:
- Palma Inca Sa Sobla;
- Palma-Manacor.
The train starts from the underground train station in Plaza de España in Palma. Tickets can be purchased from the conductor or at the city ticket office.
And of course, you can rent a car.
Taxi. What features exist
And another comfortable option for getting around Mallorca is by taxi. The average cost of a trip is 20 €. List of popular taxi companies on the island:
- IB Taxi;
- Mallorcataxitransfer;
- Mallorca Taxi Car;
- Taxi PMI;
- majorcabdriver;
- Fono-Taxi.
Public transport
The most convenient way to get around Mallorca is by bus. If you plan to travel around Palma itself and its surroundings, you can purchase a pass for 10 trips for 10 €, which is very profitable, since a ticket for 1 trip costs 1.5 €.
You can see the detailed schedule of buses and routes on the official website of the bus company.

Mallorca - holidays with children
Holidays in Mallorca with children are a great idea as you can really enjoy the peace and quiet and the children will be impressed by the picturesque scenery and encounters with wild animals that you can find in the Natura Park, on the ostrich farm or in the nature reserves. When traveling with a child, you should pay attention to the southwestern, northern or eastern part of the island - in such places there are few noisy young people and parties, so here you can truly relax and gain strength.

I'll start my review with the bright, sunny Spanish island of Mallorca. This is one of my favorite islands. It is ideal for a beach holiday. The season in Mallorca lasts from the end of May to the end of September. The hottest months are July and August.
So, let's choose a resort for ourselves.
Can Pastilla(Can Pastilla) is a quiet, cozy place with wide beaches and a gentle approach to the sea. There is a promenade for walking and jogging. From Can Pastilla you can reach almost anywhere on the island by public transport. Which is extremely convenient for those who do not plan to rent a car. Also a big plus is the proximity of the island's capital - Palma de Mallorca. And I would like to especially highlight that the airport is a 5-minute taxi ride away. If you suddenly arrive at night and don’t want a long transfer, you can spend the night in Can Pastilla and move on the next day. Accommodation in Can Pastilla is very reasonably priced. Among the attractions - in Can Pastilla is the Palma Aquarium.
Cala Major(Cala Major) is the resort closest to the capital. It is located on a rocky area and therefore the beach is located in a small bay. Cozy place, but can get crowded with locals on weekends. Many hotels are located in close proximity to the beach. The resort is more suitable for adults. Restaurants, discos, shopping centers are in the immediate vicinity.
Arenal(Arenal) - the habitat of noisy German youth. Enough
convenient transport links. The beaches of Arenal are wide and have a gentle slope into the sea. The cost of living in Arenal hotels is the lowest on the island.
Illetes(Illetes) is a respectable and picturesque luxury resort. There is a golf club. The beaches are represented by bays, sand, but in some places the entrance is rocky.
Magaluf- the habitat of even more noisy English youth. If you are located on the outskirts of Magaluf, it is no longer so noisy. The resort has a developed infrastructure, beaches in the form of bays with sand, a Kathmandu children's amusement park with an upside down house, I also recommend a stylish beach club Nikki Beach Mallorca.
Palma Nova(Palma Nova) - located next to Magaluf (15-20 minutes walk), but for a more relaxing holiday. The beaches are beautiful, the sand is fine, there is a promenade. Prices here are higher than in Magaluf.
Santa Ponsa(Santa Ponsa) - the habitat of green budgies :) Seriously, a nice cozy place for a family holiday. A wonderful pine grove grows along the sea, in which those same parrots live. The beaches are small, bays, the entry into the water is gentle.
We can choose not only the ideal tour for you, but also

Paguera(Paguera) is an even quieter resort than Santa Ponsa. The beaches are represented by bays and sand. Suitable for lovers of a quiet, relaxing holiday, as well as families with children. Not far from Paguera there is a picturesque place called Cala Fornells with wonderful small bays and clear water.
In the northwest of Mallorca Mountain chain - Sierra de Tramontana. The climate there is a little more humid. And the beaches are sand and pebbles. There are also few hotels; mostly villas are rented. A holiday for the romantics, or you can do as we did and stay a couple of nights to explore the local attractions (Valdemosa, Soller, Tie Knot and Sa Cobra, Cape Formentor).
(Alcudia) is a popular family resort on the island of Mallorca with the most ideal beach for children. A magnificent long fine sandy beach, along which sprawling pine trees grow. Good infrastructure, historical and natural attractions - what else do you need for a memorable family vacation?
A continuation of Alcudia are resorts such as Polensa (if you move towards Cape Formentor) and in the opposite direction - Playa de Muro, Can Picafort. The infrastructure is of course more modest, but if you have a car you will be comfortable everywhere.
East of Mallorca indented by bays with fine white sand, which are hidden from the wind behind spreading pine trees and coastal rocks. The east is best for lovers of romance. If you are traveling with children, then look for a larger town so that there is at least some kind of infrastructure. For example, Porto Cristo (+Dragon Caves), Cala Dor (+funny trains roll around the city), Cala Millor (+there is a long promenade with restaurants). The concentration of hotels in the east is relatively small, but there is an excellent selection of villas for different budgets.
In general, the island has many beaches for every taste and shade of blue. All beaches are state-owned, free, very picturesque and different from each other. Therefore, my advice to you: travel around the island, study, observe. I think there will be no problems with this, because... public transport is developed, or you can rent a car (you can read how to do this).
If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer.

Majorca is the largest island of the Balearic archipelago and a priceless pearl of the Spanish Mediterranean. Holidays in the numerous resorts of Mallorca are incredibly popular among tourists. It must be said frankly: in Mallorca, what is not a city is a seaside resort, but all because of the long coastline of the island. Here, travelers will find long sandy beaches, clean, warm, clear sea water and high quality service. regularly receive the Blue Flag award. The island has a very developed infrastructure; there are many historical attractions, which are very easily accessible from any resort town in Mallorca. Today we have made a selection of the most popular tourist resorts on the island of Mallorca in Spain and will briefly tell you about holidays there.
- the best youth city on the island of Mallorca, with an active and colorful nightlife, a large number of discos, nightclubs, restaurants, cafes, bars, that is, places where vacationers can have an interesting time. British youth love holidays in Magaluf: they come here in large, noisy groups and party until the early morning. Magaluf is the most party place in Mallorca in Spain. Holidays here are characterized by a fairly long holiday season: from the beginning of May to the end of October, during which time about twelve million tourists manage to visit the city. Out of season, the resort of Magaluf becomes a fairly quiet town with a small number of local residents. As noted above, young people are attracted to vacation in the resort town of Magaluf by the vibrant nightlife, which is concentrated in the Punta Baiena area, where most discos and nightclubs are located. The largest nightclub on the island of Mallorca and Europe is VSM, located in Magaluf. The most famous DJs in the world work here all the time. No less popular places for youth recreation in Magaluf are the city discos “Bananas”, “Poco Loco”, as well as the strip bar “Heaven”. The resort has eight hundred discos, bars, and nightclubs, so tourists have plenty to choose from. The city of Magaluf has many good hotels of various categories. For example, there are many good reviews from vacationers about the four-star hotels “Los Antilas Barbados”, “Sol House Trinidad”, “ME Mallorka”, “Sol Wawe House”. There are a lot of two and three star hotels at the resort. In general, prices for accommodation in Mallorca vary depending on the number of “stars” and distance from the seashore, but as for the service, it is always excellent. Magaluf has two excellent beaches. Magaluf Beach, eight hundred and fifty meters long, is an annual Blue Flag winner, with coarse white sand and a promenade bordered by palm trees. Hotels, clubs and discos start right behind this beach. Palma Nova Beach is located on the border with another resort on the island of Mallorca - Palma Nova. There are fewer people here, but the quality of the beach and the cleanliness of the water are no worse.
For tourists who come on holiday to Magaluf with children, we can recommend getting acquainted with an interesting entertainment center. Water park "Westerm Water Park" is a children's entertainment attraction in Magaluf, built in the style of a Wild West city, with the corresponding attributes: narrow crooked streets, a bank that is regularly robbed, saloons, and a prison. Here visitors can ride water slides, visit breathtaking attractions, watch shows of aquatic acrobats and cowboys, as well as wild bird performances three times a day. The water park is open every day from ten in the morning until twelve at night. Ticket price: children from three to four years old – eleven euros; from five to twelve years – eighteen euros and fifty cents; adults - twenty-six euros.
Adults on holiday in Magaluf should visit the natural and entertainment attractions. The Mallorka Rocks concert venue is a venue for concerts and youth foam parties in a huge eighty-five-meter pool. The acrobatic show “Pirate Adventure” will be interesting for tourists. There are two types of shows: - for family viewing with children - “Pirates Adventure” and for adults “Pirates Reloaded” - including complex stunts and accompanied by rock music. Among the natural attractions in Magaluf there is the “Island of the Black Lizard” - the place where the fleet of the Aragonese king Jaime the First was previously based during the battles for Mallorca. Now this island is uninhabited, there are only numerous lizards.
- another youth seaside town on the island of Mallorca, just fifteen kilometers from Palma de Mallorca, with many discos, nightclubs, the beautiful beach "Playa s" Arenal, a large water park "Aqualand". Arenal is a budget Spanish resort, popular among German and Russian youth. El Arenal beach is one of the five best in Mallorca. It is covered with fine, soft golden sand and has a length of four and a half kilometers. It has all the necessary infrastructure. And even though this resort town is rather designed for young people, tourists with children from neighboring settlements come to the local beach to relax. The beach season begins in April and ends in mid-October.
- the most popular tourist center of Spanish Mallorca, located sixty kilometers from the island capital. This is the best family resort on the island and in Spain with a coastal area of eight kilometers. Alcudia is a settlement with a rich history; it was once built as a fortified city to protect Mallorca from pirates. There are many historical architectural attractions, which allows you to combine a vacation on the seashore with excursions to interesting places in the city.
The main attractions of Alcudia: – the Gothic Church of St. Jaime, built in the thirteenth century; - medieval gates of Ksar and St. Sebastian, built in 1362; - Church and Chapel of St. Anne; - Bastion of St. Ferdinand, Chapel of Victory. In addition, in Alcudia you can visit the ancient port, the Albufera Natural Park, Cape Formento, with a beautiful lighthouse.
Alcudia has many excellent hotels located on the seafront. The most popular of these hotels in the global chain is the four-star Iberostar Alcudia Park, which is located on the first coastline near Albufera Park.
As for the beaches of the Alcudia resort, they are the best not only in Mallorca and Spain, but also in the entire Mediterranean Sea. There is white sand and a calm sea, but there are areas where a constant wind blows, which is attractive for windsurfers, surfers, paragliders, and there are also many divers and fans of outdoor activities. Families with children like to relax on the Alcudia beach - “Playa Alcudia”, because there is shallow water and no wind. On the Cap de Pinard beach there is also shallow water and no wind. But the Playa de Muro beach, although shallow, is always windy. Cala Mesquida Beach is a nudist beach. Cala Molinos Beach is a popular place for snorkelers, with many beautiful fish swimming in the water. In the port of Alcudia, the sea gate of the island of Mallorca, there is a passenger station from which ferries provide water communication with the island of Menorca and with the mainland.
Alcudia has a water park and a hydropark, they are located near the port. Opening hours: from the first of May to the thirtieth of June - from ten in the morning to five; from the first of July to the thirty-first of October - from ten in the morning to six in the evening. Ticket price: for an adult – twenty-two euros and fifty cents, for a child – sixteen euros. Among the free natural attractions of Alcudia, with children you can visit the “Albufera Park” - where there are nesting places for migratory birds of different species. The park stretches over two and a half hectares, where tourists walk or bike. There are many lakes in the park where you can take a boat trip. Alcudia has a lot of standard tourist shops, shopping centers, there is a market open on Tuesday and Sunday, where local fruits and vegetables, Spanish delicacies, pottery and tannery products, and various souvenirs are sold.
Resort Cala d'Or– the best holiday destination for newlyweds and families with children in Mallorca. The city is located sixty-five kilometers from the capital of the island. There are not many hotels here, as villas and apartments predominate. A tourist train runs around the city and its surroundings. It must be said that there are no attractions at the resort itself, but in its surroundings there are: - “Mondrago Park” is located eight kilometers away; - there is a sports complex “El Puerto”; - the famous cave of the island of Mallorca - “Dragon Cave”. The city has a small but very decent beach.
– a very cozy resort, suitable for a quiet family holiday, located twenty kilometers from the city of Palma de Mallorca. Even during the peak holiday season, the resort of Santa Ponsa, unlike neighboring Magaluf, located just six kilometers away, is very calm and measured. This Mallorcan resort is adored by the Irish and Scots, which is why Irish folk music is played in the city's bars, cafes and restaurants in the evenings. The city of Santa Ponsa is a historical place in Spain. First, the settlement was formed by the ancient Romans, then they were replaced by the Saracens, who were conquered by the Spanish king Jaime the First. A memorial cross was erected where he landed.
The resort of Santa Ponsa has several excellent beaches. The Playa de Santa Ponsa beach is about one and a half kilometers long. Beach "Playa d"en Pellicer" - not far from the port, with a yacht berth, a children's playground and even a "portable summer library". Two comfortable tourist ships sail along the coast from the port of Santa Ponsa, passengers traveling on them have the opportunity to swim in open sea. The price of such a boat trip is twenty euros. The Playa de Castellot beach is small and cozy, with very clean and clear water, there are almost no waves, which attracts tourists with children.
Among the attractions of the city of Santa Ponsa, we recommend visiting: - “Chapel of the Holy Stone” - with priceless Christian relics; - a medieval castle and its defensive tower, built in the fourteenth century. Among the holidays held in Santa Ponsa, one can note the annual celebration, held from the sixth to the twelfth of September, in honor of the landing of King Jaime I of Spain on the island of Mallorca - “Rei en Jaume”. At the extravaganza, people dressed in historical clothes make a theatrical landing on the shores of Santa Ponsa and re-enact the battle of Christians with the Moors. Many travelers come to Santa Ponsa for this holiday. For entertainment, Santa Ponsa has the largest golf club in Mallorca, Urbanizacion Golf Santa Ponsa, with three eighteen-hole courses. The price of the game is eighty-five euros. For families with children, we recommend visiting the tropical amusement park “Jungle Park”. Here, on nine hectares of area, several meters above the ground, there are several interesting routes and hundreds of platforms with various obstacles; there are also extreme tracks for adult visitors and for children from four years old. In terms of youth entertainment, the Santa Ponsa resort has a lot of colorful places: - “Disco Inferno”, “Kitty O’Sheas”, “Fama” - these are night clubs; - “Greenhills”, “Manhattans”, “Simplys” are disco bars; - “Shamrock”, “Durty Nellys”, “Dicey Reillys” are Irish bars.
– a quiet resort in Mallorca for a family holiday, but very modern. The beaches in Palma Nova are sandy, with excellent developed infrastructure, a large selection of water activities, many bars and cafes along the city promenade.
The most popular beaches of Palm Nova among tourists are: “Son Caliu”; "Son Maties" Palma Nova. In terms of entertainment for adults, there is the most popular casino in Mallorca. The only club in the resort is Joe Banana Paseo de la Mar, a place where discos and karaoke are held. For other entertainment, tourists go to neighboring Magaluf. Golf lovers can play at the Fantasia Mini-Golf Center. There are three courses of eighteen holes each, surrounded by lush vegetation, beautiful waterfalls, lakes, and caves. The price of the game is twelve euros and fifty cents. Those who like to have an active holiday can visit the Big Blue Diving diving center. For children in Palma Nova there is an interesting park “Marineland”, where performances of dolphins, fur seals, and exotic bird shows are held.
is a beautiful family resort on the island of Mallorca in Spain. There is no noisy nightlife here, which is ideal when traveling with children. But there are no large shopping centers, tourist shops, few bars and cafes, although there is a restaurant with two Michelin Stars - the only one in Mallorca.
Illetas has three sandy beaches: - the largest, one hundred and eighty meters long, “Es Forti”; one hundred twenty-meter beach “Playa de Illetas”; small beach "Cala Contesa". There are other beaches in the city, but the entrance to the sea is made from concrete slabs. The sea in Illetas is always calm and there are almost no waves, which makes the resort an ideal holiday destination with small children. Needless to say, this is one of the best Spanish island resorts, if the summer residence of the kings of Spain is located here?!
- a great place for a family holiday in Mallorca, surrounded by pine forests. There are three excellent sandy beaches: Playa La Romana, Playa Palmira, Playa Tora, connected by a long pedestrian promenade. The city has many cafes, bars, discos, and night dance venues.
Among the historical attractions of Paguera, it is worth noting: “Belver Castle” built at the beginning of the fourteenth century, which was previously the summer residence of the Spanish king Jaime II. The castle is in excellent condition and is the only round one - a striking example of Gothic military architecture. In Paguera there is the largest stadium in the Balearic Islands - “ONO Estadi”, designed for twenty-three thousand one hundred and forty-two spectators. A favorite tourist attraction is “Pueblo Español” - “Spanish Village”, which is an open-air museum with one hundred and sixteen houses in different architectural styles. It was erected in 1927.
is a small town, incredibly popular among German tourists due to its rather vibrant nightlife. Almost all bars are aimed at guests from Germany. The “beach season” here is long: it begins in early May and ends at the end of September, although many tourists come here to relax all year round, because the climate of Mallorca is mild, and hotels have heated indoor pools.
Among the attractions in the city, it is worth seeing the beautiful “Church of St. Anthony”. If you walk along the city embankment, you can completely unnoticed find yourself in the neighboring youth resort town of Arenal. In general, the Can Pastilla resort is considered a respectable holiday destination in Mallorca, designed for families with children. The town has a “Tourist Train 52” that runs along the promenade. The price of a round trip ticket is three and a half euros. Along the way, this train makes forty-four stops, you can get off at any of them, but when you get on the next train, you will have to pay again. Ca'n Pastilla has bike, car and motorbike rentals so you can explore Mallorca on your own.
There are three beaches in the city: “Playa de Arenal”, “Playa de Can Pastilla”, “Playa de Palma”, however, there are no boundaries between them, they smoothly flow from one to another. All city beaches have excellent infrastructure; here you can find a lot of activities for active recreation: beach volleyball, mini-golf, water skiing and so on. The local harbor has a marina for the Maritimo San Antonio de Playa city club, from where tourists go on boat trips.
For vacationers with children, we recommend going to the Aquacity water park, which is located on the beach, although it officially belongs to the city of Arenal. It is open from ten in the morning to five in the evening, and in June-July until six in the evening. The price of an adult ticket is twenty-one euros, a child ticket is fifteen euros, children under three years old are free. The Palma Aquarium, located on the outskirts of the city, is the best in Europe. In total there are fifty-five aquariums and five thematic zones, home to eight thousand specimens of fish - inhabitants of the Mediterranean Sea and the oceans of our planet. There is a tropical garden and also a pirate ship.
- another favorite resort of German tourists in Mallorca, with nightclubs, restaurants, bars and discos, and well-developed infrastructure. Holidays here are quieter than in Magaluf, but not as quiet as in Illetas. Once a modest fishing village, Can Picafort has become a place where you can not only relax on the magnificent sandy beaches, which are eight kilometers long, but also get acquainted with Spanish cuisine, as well as traditional dishes of the island of Mallorca. We recommend doing this in the restaurants “Rapha’s La Terracita”, “Restaurante Vinicius”, “Pizzeria Trattoria Mamma Mia”, “La Pinta”, “Doner King Can Picafort”, “Don Denis”, “Mandilego”. In Can Picafort you can have fun at night in clubs and discos, of which there are quite a lot in the city.
Holidays in the resorts of Mallorca guarantee a great time, regardless of where you choose to live there, because the island has a well-developed transport network that allows you to get to other cities in a short time. The climate of the Spanish island is incredibly mild, which allows you to relax there all year round; it’s just that out of season you will swim not in the sea, but in hotel pools. The island of Mallorca sinks into your soul once and for all: having rested there once, you will definitely come there again.
Basic moments
Along the western coast of the island of Mallorca stretches the Sierra de Tramontana mountain range with peaks soaring high into the sky. It protects the land from the vagaries of the sea, while at the same time giving way to corners of the coastal strip to miniature bays with magnificent sandy beaches, along which today there are prestigious resorts where world celebrities like to stay.
The Sierra de Levante mountains “captured” the east of the island; they are not as high as the Sierra de Tramontana, but no less picturesque. The east coast with spacious, gently sloping sandy beaches, oriented more towards mass tourism, is densely built up with hotel complexes and offers a classic range of services of a Mediterranean resort. It is especially crowded here in the summer months, which is the peak tourist season in Mallorca, when the air temperature exceeds +30 °C and the sea warms up to +25 °C.
Between the mountain ranges there is a fertile valley, where ancient picturesque towns and monasteries are scattered, travel through which is one of the favorite pastimes of tourists.
Mallorca is also home to the capital of the Balearic Islands, Palma de Mallorca, the most beautiful city in the Mediterranean and a recognized center of international tourism. Located in the most charming bay of the island, it, like a magnet, attracts travelers from all over the planet, seducing them with its wonderful beaches and magnificent architecture, excellent cuisine and vibrant nightlife.
History of the island of Mallorca
Archaeological excavations indicate that people began to settle in Mallorca as early as Paleolithic times. It is believed that the stone structures found here, called taliots, were created by people who migrated to the Balearics from the Eastern Mediterranean. In the historical era, the fertile island, which occupies a strategic position, fell into the sphere of interests of neighboring powerful states, and this determined its future fate.
In the 7th century BC. e. the island was a colony of Carthage. It is known that local residents, famous for their skillful use of slings, served as mercenaries in their army. After the fall of Carthage, the Balearics remained independent for a short time, but in 123 BC. e. were conquered by the Roman consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus. During his reign, Palma de Mallorca was founded.
In 426, the Vandals invaded here, but a century later they were ousted by the Byzantines. Since the 7th century, the Arabs tried to conquer the archipelago, but only in 902 did they manage to conquer Majorca, as a result of which it was annexed to the Emirate of Cordoba. King Jaime I of Aragon conquered the Balearic Islands from the Arabs. In 1229, his fleet, consisting of 150 ships, besieged Medina Majorica, as the current capital of Balearic was then called, and three months later the city was taken. Soon the king promulgated a charter proclaiming the principles of equality, freedom and self-government - a declarative document that became the most progressive of that era.
After the death of Jaime I, his son Jaime II became the ruler of the largest of the Balearic Islands, receiving the title of King of Majorca. During his reign, new cities were built here, majestic cathedrals and castles were erected, their own money was minted, shipbuilding developed, and trade flourished.
Mallorca lost its independence in 1344, when it was conquered by Pedro IV, King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona. Since that time, the Balearics became part of the Kingdom of Aragon, with which they subsequently became part of the Spanish state - as a result of the marriage of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, who united the Spanish lands.
These events ultimately determined the direction of development of the island's culture, which clearly reflects the influence of Catalonia. To this day, two languages are spoken here: Spanish (Castilian) and Catalan, the local dialect of which is called Mallorquin. This is also related to the difference in the sound of the island’s name – “Mallorca” and “Mallorca”. When talking with local residents, you can call the island as you wish, they will understand you in both cases, but keep in mind that you should not delve into the language issue here, since this is a problematic topic for Mallorcans.
Foreigners began to discover the delights of Mallorca in the mid-nineteenth century, and the stay of the famous couple George Sand and Frédéric Chopin here marked the beginning of the era of tourism. Following them, a constant stream of representatives of bohemians and aristocrats rushed here. The tourist boom of the 60s of the last century turned Mallorca into one of the most developed and attractive Mediterranean resorts, where both moneybags and budget travelers can relax. Not far from Palma, in the Marivent Palace, the royal family rests in the summer.
Can Pere Antoni Beach
Palma, as locals call their capital for short, is the largest city and port of the archipelago. The modern neighborhoods and resorts of Palma de Mallorca stretch along the coast of a picturesque bay, while the historical part begins behind the cathedral and the Royal Palace of Almudaina, which rise majestically above the city port. Here, in the ancient harbor, snow-white elegant yachts slowly sway on the blue waves. This spectacular landscape is an integral feature of the appearance of Palma and the calling card of the Balearic Islands - a recognized yachting center of the Mediterranean. Sailing regattas, which are traditionally held in Mallorca every year, are attended by yachtsmen from all over the world, including royalty.
The main historical attraction of Palma de Mallorca is the cathedral. This magnificent structure looks especially impressive from the sea, resembling a colossal pink rock with its bizarre outlines. Work on the cathedral began in the 13th century and was completed only in the 16th century. Over the next centuries, its appearance changed several times. At the end of the 19th century, it was decided to renovate its façade, and by the beginning of the 20th century, the last stage of construction, to which the great Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi was involved, was completed. Today, the cathedral's façade, decorated like a piece of jewelry, is a superb example of Spanish Renaissance architecture.
The interior of the temple is laconic, and unlike most Catholic cathedrals, it is very light. Streams of light pour through numerous stained glass windows. During the day, the smooth play of multi-colored sunlight illuminates either one of the magnificent pulpits or the portico of the ancient choirs, built in the Renaissance. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity contains the tombs of the medieval kings of Majorca - Jaime II and Jaime III.
The land surrounding the cathedral once stood on the site of an Arab city known in the Muslim world as Medina Majorica. Today, only the arch on Almudaina Street and the Arab baths on Serra Street remind of it. On the foundations of an Arab fortress that existed here in the 13th century, the Almudaina Palace was erected, and to this day it is a royal residence. Part of the palace is open to tourists, where you can admire the beautiful interiors, luxurious tapestries, stroll through the courtyard and beautiful garden. The Gothic palace galleries offer a magnificent panorama of the city and the cathedral. A visit to the royal residence will cost 7 €. Near the Almudaina Palace there is a parking lot for horse-drawn carriages, on one of which you can take a tour of the old city.
On the nearby streets of Sanglada and Morey, majestic buildings of the 16th-18th centuries have been preserved. It is interesting to wander around here, looking into ancient churches and admiring the facades and courtyards of rich houses that belonged to the nobility and merchants.
In Plaza San Francisco there is a church of the same name, one of the oldest in Mallorca. It was founded during the reign of Jaime II, but the entire ensemble of the temple was completed only in the 14th century. In one of its octagonal chapels, decorated in the Renaissance and Baroque style, there is a sarcophagus containing the remains of the medieval philosopher, theologian, and writer Raymond Lull. This native of Palma de Mallorca, canonized as a saint, is considered the creator of the Catalan language and a classic of Catalan literature.
One of the most beautiful buildings in the capital of Mallorca, La Lonja, was built in the 15th century, at a time when Palma was one of the richest cities in the Mediterranean. In this majestic Gothic building with luxurious windows occupying the entire forty-meter facade facing the embankment, there was a stock exchange where trade transactions were concluded. Today there is a cultural center of the capital and an exhibition hall here.
On the top of the mountain overlooking Palma, at an altitude of 112 meters, is the majestic Bellver Castle, built in the 14th century by order of King Jaime II of Mallorca. Being one of the oldest round castles in Europe, it has interesting architecture. Rising 25 m, its central tower, twelve meters in diameter, points to the north. It is connected to the central building of the castle by a seven-meter arched bridge, under which a water moat is dug. The three remaining towers face south, west and east. Bellver's spacious round courtyard is equal in size to the town square of a medieval city, and on the roof of the castle there is an observation deck offering beautiful views of the sea, Palma and its surroundings.
Banks and the most luxurious shops of Palma de Mallorca are located in its geographical center - the El Born quarter, from which it is pleasant to stroll to Porta de Santa Catalina square, looking at the windows of boutiques and modest shops. A wonderful place for a promenade is the city embankment, along which there are rows of palm and orange trees, elegant hotels, restaurants and cafes, where you can spend more than one hour at the tables, refreshing yourself with pleasant drinks and enjoying the seascape.
The western part of the promenade and Gomila Square are well known to nightlife lovers who flock to the capital of the island of Mallorca, famous for its nightclubs, bars and discos.
Palma de Mallorca at nightIn and around Palma there are several beautiful sandy beaches with gently sloping shores and clear seas. Almost all of them are municipal. You don't have to pay to enter, but renting an umbrella and sunbed will cost you 10 €. By the way, a beach umbrella can be purchased in the store for 15 €.
The beaches of Palma de Mallorca have all the attributes of a prestigious resort - Blue Flags, excellent infrastructure, opportunities for water sports, but during the season they are simply crowded.
Just a 20-minute walk from the cathedral is Can Pere Antoni beach, perhaps the most crowded in Mallorca. But in this coastal area there are two paid club beaches - Nassau Beach Club and Anima Beach Club, where it is more comfortable and secluded. Further, to the east, to the resort of Arenal, the seven-kilometer Playa de Palma beach stretches. This corner of the island, popular among tourists, is entirely built up with hotels, bars, and restaurants.
Beach Playa de PalmaWest coast of Mallorca
Drive 9 km west from Palma to the resort town of Illetas, with its stunning coastline bordered by steep mountains reflected in the blue sea waters. There are many beaches here that belong to hotels, but there is also a municipal one, where there is often nowhere for an apple to fall.
Palma Nova beach is located 14 km west of Palma, and Magaluf is a little further. Young people from northern Europe like to relax here, and it can be quite noisy.
The resort of Andratx is reached by a seaside highway, laid along the shore of Santa Ponsa Bay, famous for the fact that it was here that the troops of Jaime I landed in 1229, who liberated the island from the Moors. Driving along a picturesque coast lined with small beaches, you will find yourself in one of the most charming corners of Mallorca.
Port Andratx, a former fishing village, today serves as a haven for luxury yachts, but despite its tourist orientation, the city has retained its character. However, tour operators do not send organized groups of tourists here. Those who prefer to relax individually, as well as the lucky ones who own local real estate, stay here. There are many boutiques, expensive fish restaurants and several luxurious beaches, where world celebrities have been spotted many times.
The city of Anrach itself is located a short distance from the coast, deep in the valley. Stroll along its narrow, crooked streets, see the Gothic church and the ancient Son Mas castle.
8 km from Andratx is the westernmost point of Mallorca - Sant Elmo. There is a seductive but very small beach here. Opposite is Dragonera Island, where you can go by excursion boat. This uninhabited island, with its silhouette reminiscent of a dragon, has the status of a natural park, and here you can spend a pleasant few hours walking along the trails laid out for tourists.
Northwestern coast of Mallorca
From Andratx along the entire coast, to the north, stretches the Sierra de Tramontana mountain range, which, thanks to its fantastically beautiful natural landscapes and historical sites located in the foothills, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The serpentine road, laid through the mountain gorges of the Sierra de Tramontana, has long been chosen by venerable film directors who shoot films in the action genre. This narrow two-lane highway, four meters wide, despite the high-quality road surface, is not intended for faint-hearted travelers: its sharp turns, thanks to which it received the name “Tie Knot,” excite the blood, and the cliffs hanging over the road, from where they can collapse at any moment the stones look menacing in places. However, the breathtaking landscapes passing outside the window of your car or tour bus can make you forget about the risk!
To travel around this region by car, you can, of course, choose other routes, but while driving, you should always slow down in front of the signs in order to have time to figure out where to turn, since it is very easy to get lost here.
As you follow Mallorca's west coast north, stop in the town of Banyalbufar, surrounded on all sides by terraced fields that slope down to the sandy shore. Here you can explore the beautifully preserved church and take some great photos by climbing the ancient watchtower.
To the east of Banyalbufar, in a mountain valley, is the legendary Valldemossa, which earned fame due to the fact that George Sand and Frederic Chopin spent the winter here in 1839. The city itself, surrounded by stone terraces and centuries-old olive trees, is a favorite summer vacation spot for wealthy Majorcans.
It is worth visiting the former Carthusian monastery, secularized in 1835, to see the remaining monastic cells decorated with magnificent ceramics, the library, and the cells in which Chopin and George Sand lived. Here you will see the manuscript of the book “Winter in Mallorca”, written by the famous writer, and the piano played by the great Polish composer. Every year the monastery hosts an International Music Festival, during which famous pianists give concerts.
From Valldemosa the road will take you to the incredibly beautiful town of Deia, which somehow miraculously fits on the narrow terraces of the mountain slopes. It seems that the golden ocher houses of the local residents, lined with olive and coniferous trees, have grown into the slopes, and their tiled roofs float in the treetops. At the top of one of the hills stands the ancient Church of St. John the Baptist.
Deya is well known in bohemian circles. Many artists come here in search of inspiration, and on its narrow streets it is quite possible to meet a celebrity from the world of cinema or show business strolling.
Not far from the city there is a charming bay with a beach, but you will have to walk down there (about an hour down, and a little more in the opposite direction).
Bay near the town of DeiaTo the east of Deia is the town of Soller. It is located among orange plantations, which are surrounded on all sides by mountains. It is sweet citrus fruits, almost the entire harvest of which is exported from Mallorca to the mainland, that is the main wealth of the city. The balconies of Soller's houses are decorated with geraniums, and the luxurious manor houses built in the 18th-19th centuries are reminiscent of the palaces of Cannes, Marseille and Toulon - the southern Mediterranean cities of France.
Three kilometers from Soller is the resort of Port de Soller. It is located on the shore of a semicircular bay, protected from the wind, and it is connected to the city by an old tram line, the only one in Mallorca.
A few kilometers from Soller lie the typical Mediterranean towns of Biniaraix and Fornaluch, with houses clinging to the hillsides, between which the streets meander like snakes. They are connected by stone stairs and miniature stone-paved squares.
Many Mallorcans consider Fornaluch to be the most beautiful town on the island, but perhaps they pay tribute to its location, because it “occupies” the slope of Mallorca’s highest mountain, the peak of which, Puig Mayor, is at an altitude of 1445 meters.
From Soller and its surrounding towns you can go on excursions to the Sierra de Tramontana mountains. The most difficult route will take you to the watchtower, located at an altitude of 915 m, overlooking the valley and mountain slopes, where picturesque ancient settlements are located. Here you will find yourself surrounded by the four highest mountains of the island of Mallorca.
Near the small town of Bunyola is the Alfabia estate, famous for its gardens. It once served as the residence of one of the Moorish viziers. True, only the inlaid ceiling has been preserved from those times in this building. Walk along the magnificent poplar alley and you will see the baroque facade of the palace, and then, behind the Renaissance entrance hall, a patio surrounded by arched galleries. Wandering through the halls of this estate, you will be able to admire the magnificent Mallorcan setting, and a walk through the romantic flower-filled garden with miniature ponds will make you feel as if time has stood still here.
The road heading north will lead to the Monastery of Our Lady of Ljuja, which is the spiritual center of the island of Mallorca. It is located in a mountainous area, surrounded by bizarre limestone rocks. The monastery was founded in 1250 and was rebuilt several times. It acquired its current appearance in the 17th-18th centuries. Pilgrims who come to the monastery venerate Moreneta, a small sculpture of the Blessed Virgin, which locals call the “Black Madonna.” Every year at the end of August a night procession takes place from Palma to it. The monastery has long been famous for its children's boys' choir, one of the best in the world.
In the Ethnographic Museum, located on the second floor of the main building of the monastery, you will find objects from the prehistoric period, as well as examples of Mallorcan folk clothing, ceramics, religious objects and paintings by local artists. To the left of the monastery building are bas-reliefs by Antoni Gaudi.
Closer to the north-western tip of Mallorca is the famous Calobra beach with fine sand and turquoise sea. The pristine beauty of this corner of the island, which seems to be protected by majestic cliffs, is simply amazing. Unfortunately, in Mallorca everyone knows about this, and a secluded holiday is out of the question here.
At the northern tip of Mallorca is the resort region of Pollensa, which includes the city of the same name, the Formentor peninsula, the resorts of Port de Pollensa and Cala Sant Vicent. Pollensa itself lies at the foot of the Sierra de Tramontana, in the center of a fertile plain. This rich city with beautiful villas and excellent shops, which has long been favored by writers and artists, lives a rich cultural life, as you can see by visiting its many galleries. In July-August, international music and painting festivals are held in the covered gallery of the Monastery of St. Dominic, built in the 16th-17th centuries.
Pollensa, MallorcaThe most famous landmark of the north of Mallorca, which is also the pride of the local residents, is the double-arch bridge built by the ancient Romans. Tourists are also impressed by the staircase with 365 steps, along which, inhaling the smell of the dark green cypress trees bordering it, you can climb the hill where there is a beautiful Baroque chapel built in the 18th century. Its porch offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
The picturesque bays of Port de Pollensa and Cala Sant Vicente have wonderful beaches, and Cape Formentor is a masterpiece of Mallorcan nature. Conventionally, it can be divided into two parts: from Porta de Pollensa to Formentor beach, and from the beach to the lighthouse. You can get here by the only road - from Porta Pollensa. Halfway there is an observation deck from which stunning panoramas open up, more than once captured by professional photographers, and decorating the pages of millions of tourist brochures and magazines with information about the island of Mallorca. Many tourists prefer to travel on foot around the cape. The old road, which was once used to ride donkeys, now offers an excellent walking route.
A picturesque mountainous cape, cutting like a wedge into the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, separates Pallença Bay from the spacious Alcudia Bay, on the coast of which there are seductive beaches. But first, take a look at the city of Alcudia, located a short distance from the coast. In the 1st century AD e. a small fortified city already stood on this site, which the Romans called Polentia. For some time it was the capital of Balearic. In the 5th century it was destroyed by vandals, but the Moors who conquered Majorca built a new city here, which they called Alcudia.
Alcudia captivates with its distinctive appearance, in which history and modernity are intertwined. Wandering through its narrow streets, paved with stone, you can admire the luxurious facades of the ancient buildings bordering them, and look into cute shops where they sell original souvenirs. There are many elegant cafes and restaurants here, which are especially pleasant to sit in in the evening, when the ancient city quarters are illuminated.
Three kilometers from the city, on the shores of Alcudia Bay, is located one of the most popular resorts on the island of Mallorca - Puerto de Alcudia. Along the sea coast there are crowded restaurants, cafes, and hotels, in which there are no empty seats during the season. This resort is ideal for families with children, because its spacious beaches with a gentle entrance to the sea are absolutely safe.
Puerto de AlcudiaSoutheast coast of Mallorca
The Sierra de Levante mountain range stretches along the eastern coast. These mountains are no less picturesque than the Sierra de Tramontana, but they are not so high and steep. Start your journey through this region with a visit to the ancient city of Arta, which retains the charm of the so-called colonial style architecture. It is located in the middle of a valley, surrounded by hills, the top of one of which is crowned by the Church of Christ the Savior. This picturesque place offers amazing views of the surrounding areas. Not far from Arta, at the foot of the hills, is another picturesque town - Capdepera, whose houses are crowded around an ancient castle. Next to it is the excellent Cala Mesquida beach, especially popular among German tourists, and the Cala Ratjada resort.
City of Arta in MallorcaThe famous Arta Grottoes are located in this part of the island of Mallorca. A visit to the grottoes, the height of which in some places reaches 40 m, invariably makes a strong impression on travelers. As you climb the stairs leading to the grottoes, you should sometimes turn around to capture in your memory the incredible beauty of the views of the sea, which appears from a completely unusual angle. These caves were inhabited back in the 16th century, and if they are not the most amazing in the world, as the Mallorcans are sure of, then, in any case, they are grandiose.
Continuing your journey along the east coast, to the south of Mallorca, you will find yourself in the city of Porto Cristo, next to which there are another famous caves - Harms and Drak. The Kharms caves are small in size, they can be explored in half an hour, but they are very interesting for their transparent stalactites, shaped like harpoons. The length of the Drak caves is 2 km. The five lakes located there brought them fame. One of them, Martel, is considered the largest cave reservoir in the world. Its length is 177 m, width – 40 m. During a two-hour excursion, which includes a boat ride, you will admire the beauty of the underground world and music and light effects. The cost of the excursion is 12 € per person.
The beaches in this part of the coast are surrounded by pine trees, which is why they received the name “Pine Coast”.
Along the sea coast, from Porto Cristo to Porto Colon, there is a strip of resorts and beaches, each more beautiful than the other. There are about two dozen of them here.
The closer you get to the southern tip of Mallorca, the more winding the coastline becomes. It is indented by narrow bays turned into beach recreation areas. Some particularly attractive beaches are difficult to access and can only be reached by boat.
The largest “wild” beach in Mallorca, Es Trenc, is very popular among tourists and local residents, stretching for 2 km and not belonging to any resort. It is worth saying that this popularity comes at a cost to vacationers: for a pair of sun loungers under a straw umbrella you will have to pay 19 €, for a glass of mojito with ice – 7 €, for parking – 6 € (fortunately, per day).
Nearby is the Colonia Sant Jordi resort, which is quite quiet and cozy. Opposite it is the tiny island of Cabrera, which has the status of a national park and can be reached by ferry.
Central areas of Mallorca
Traveling around the central part of the island is no less interesting than relaxing on one of its coasts. There are picturesque valleys here, the most famous of which is Es Pla. They are surrounded by mountain spurs covered with oak and pine forests, hills whose terraces are overgrown with almond, olive, orange and lemon trees.
Visit the quiet villages of Sa Pobla and Miro to admire the ancient Gothic buildings. Passing the fields, here and there you will see romantic mills, stop by Algaida, famous for its traditional Mallorcan cuisine. The city is also famous for its fig plantations and glassware.
The town of Felanić has also retained its medieval charm. You will truly enjoy wandering through its ancient streets. Architecture connoisseurs should visit the St. Augustine Monastery, built in the 16th century.
Don't miss Albufera, the wettest part of the island, where some 230 species of birds live among lush vegetation. The main decoration of the flora of this place is the orchid “orehis palustriea”.
The cities of the island of Mallorca are very attractive and large (relatively speaking, of course). Inca is worth a visit not only to see its 18th-century monastery and baroque church. This city is famous for its numerous shoe factories. High-quality products from local manufacturers are displayed in the windows of all shops located in the city center. Local sausages and confectionery are also excellent.
The second largest city in Mallorca, after Palma, is Manacor. From a distance, it does not give the impression of an ancient city - high-rise buildings obscure the historical buildings preserved here. Its glorious past is reminiscent of a Gothic temple with an elegant belfry, a 17th-century monastery building, which today houses the city hall, and an ancient tower rising on the main square.
The city has gained international fame from the enterprises and workshops where artificial pearls are produced. Traditional Balearic furniture is also made in Manacor.
In the historic town of Llucmajor, where the battle that ended the island's autonomy took place in the 14th century, see the monastery of San Buenaventura and the huge sculpture depicting the fighting Jaime III, the last king of independent Mallorca.
Leisure
The fabulous underwater world of the island's marine area attracts diving enthusiasts here. Here you can endlessly swim among coral reefs, look at mysterious underwater caves, wrecks of sunken ships, exotic seaweed, bizarre invertebrates and fish. Almost every resort has its own diving school, where you can get training and rent diving equipment. The cost of the initial course is about 50 €.
From mid-July to mid-August, when a light breeze blows through Mallorca, surfing fans come here. The best schools for teaching this sport are in Alcudia and Puerto Pollensa. The cost of lessons for beginner windsurfers is about 20 €/hour.
KitesurfingMallorca has 22 golf courses. The courses of varying degrees of difficulty are located mainly in Cala Major, near Palma, in Illetas, Magaluf, and the main golf resort is located in Santa Ponsa, on the southwest coast of the island.
Paragliding is also well developed in Mallorca. The main centers are in the areas of Alcudia, Cabo Blanca and Bethlen. A duet flight with an experienced instructor will cost 85 € for 20 minutes.
National cuisine
Traditional dishes of the island of Mallorca are a gourmet's dream! Excellent liquid meat and fish soups are prepared here. No less tasty are hearty thick soups made from cabbage, pieces of homemade bread soaked in broth, paprika, tomatoes and garlic.
Second courses are most often based on pork. It is fried or baked, stuffed with liver, eggs, bread, spices, apples and plums. From the same meat, Majorcans prepare “sobrasada” - soft orange-colored sausages, thanks to paprika. These sausages are especially tasty fried.
Mallorcan tombet is made from potatoes, eggplant, sweet peppers and tomatoes. This assortment, which looks like batter, is topped with tomato sauce. Eggplants stuffed with meat or fish and baked in the oven are also very good.
In restaurants serving national cuisine, try a dish called “Frit Mallorqui” - a mix of vegetables and meat. In the classic version, this should be the meat of a sheep fried in its own blood, which is cooked whole, along with offal (brains, tongue, liver, kidneys).
Another specialty of Mallorca is fish and seafood dishes. They are mainly cooked here on the grill.
Of the numerous sweet and salty dishes, also common in Mallorca, chicken stuffed with pomegranate seeds, white turkey meat with almond sauce, and pigeons with chestnuts are especially good. Try Soller-style eggs, baked and topped with milk-vegetable sauce, or empanadas made from tuna, vegetables and meat – a dish reminiscent of pizza.
Among sweet dishes, the most popular is ensaymada - a snail-shaped pastry filled with cream and sprinkled with powdered sugar. No less tasty are lush pies with apricots and almond pies, prepared without adding flour, which are often served with ice cream.
Mallorca produces good wines, but in small quantities. The best light red wine comes from Benisalem, Inca, Arta. And be sure to try the Mallorcan liqueur - palo.
Prices in cafes and restaurants on the island vary, as does the range of dishes served. A set lunch in an average cafe costs 8 € per person, and a meal in a fish restaurant will cost you at least 50 € per person.
