Amalfi attractions
People come to Amalfi primarily for the natural scenery. The town is located on a rocky cliff, and slender houses nestle on terraced ledges. At the very foot of the cliff, in secluded bays, there are several pebble and sand beaches. This is how the Amalfi coast differs from the Ligurian coast, where the rocky shores go straight into the sea. The town itself has preserved several historical monuments, the largest of which is the Cathedral of St. Andrew the First-Called. In addition, Amalfi is surrounded by lemon groves, which are ideal for hiking.
When strolling through Amalfi, it is impossible to miss Cathedral of St. Andrew the First-Called. It is located in the central square of the resort - Piazza Duomo. The exterior of the cathedral is quite unusual for Italy; Byzantine motifs are easily discernible in it. Another decoration of the cathedral is the tower, which proudly rises above all the buildings of Amalfi.
After wandering through the old streets of the city, from where panoramic views of the sea open from different sides, go on boat trips. This can be done from the local marina, where excursion trips on boats and motorboats are offered to guests. The most interesting option for such a trip would be a visit to the famous Emerald Grotto– caves in one of the coastal rocks, hidden from prying eyes. This grotto is lined with salt deposits, which is why the color of the water here is almost emerald. You can go down to the grotto using a specially equipped elevator.
If you want to visit other towns on the Amalfi Coast, you can do this by public transport. There is a bus service between the cities. You can leave from the nearest bus stop. Thus, the distance from Amalfi to Positano will be 18.5 km, to Ravello – 7 km, to Maiori – 6 km.

It's hard to imagine a holiday in Amalfi without a beach component. And although the local beaches cannot be called the best in Italy, they are still very popular among vacationers on Amalfi. Most of the beaches in Amalfi are paid, and you need to be prepared for this. By paying the entrance fee, you will have the opportunity to use sun loungers, umbrellas and sun loungers on the beach. Another feature of local beaches is their size.
Amalfi beaches are quite small and can get quite crowded in the summer. The coverage of the local beaches is pebble or sand and pebbles, the entrance to the sea is gentle, and there are almost no waves. The beaches of Amalfi are suitable for families with children, if a pebble surface is acceptable for you; in all other respects, the local beaches are not inferior to the beaches in other resorts in Italy.

Brief historical background
Amalfi was for a long time the capital of the maritime republic. Probably founded in the 4th century by a Roman emperor. Later, when the Germans penetrated Europe, Amalfi already became a large populated area with its own structure and trade. In the 9th century, the Dukes of Amalfi ascended the throne here. The city finally lost its independence in the 11th century.
Despite this, as well as the attacks of invaders, the city remained a powerful community. He could not compare with Pisa or Genoa, but still retained trade and port knowledge. Among the crafts and occupations of the population, fishing, paper production, and limoncello liqueur flourished here.
Nowadays, the city is the capital of the Amalfi Coast, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique area of rock settlements in southern Italy attracts tourists every year.
Brief geography and climate
Located in the province of Salerno, southern Italy. The town is located on the slope of a cliff, so the houses are connected to each other by carved stairs, and there are gardens on the roofs of the houses. But Amalfi is not only rocks and houses, it is also numerous shoots of grapes, citrus fruits, and olives. Thus, the interweaving of dead and living nature, as well as architecture, give Amalfi a unique synthesis of a single harmony.
Amalfi's climate is subtropical. In July and August the temperature is at its highest, rarely falling below 30 degrees Celsius. It is most pleasant to go to Amalfi in May-June or September-October, because the sea is already warm enough, but there is no terrible heat and drought.

- From, Sorrento, Positano, Salerno - by ferry.
Amalfi itself is easy to get around by bus or taxi. There are special passes that allow you to travel to some cities on the Amalfi Coast. You can rent a car, but be aware that the roads here are very difficult, mountainous, and there are serpatinas.
Where to stay?
Amalfi is a popular town, so you can stay there in any establishment of your choice: from an ancient house - an architectural monument, to a simple, clean hotel.
But the city cannot be classified as an inexpensive resort. Despite the fact that it is located in a rural area, due to its picturesqueness the place deserves a large fee. So, two tourists can stay in a private house not in the center for about 8 thousand rubles a day. But accommodation in an establishment of a certain category (from 3 stars) will cost tourists about 13 thousand rubles for two per day.

For those who like walking, in the center of the city there is a cathedral where the relics of St. Andrew the First-Called, the patron saint of sailors, are kept. It stands on the main square of the city. The temple was built in the Byzantine-Norman style, decorated with carvings, frescoes, and mosaics. You can visit the cathedral to view the collection of religious objects. The local cemetery can sometimes be confused with a garden, it is so decorated with plants. Nearby is a monument to Flavio Joya, captain and inventor.
Once a year, a naval regatta is held in turn in four Italian cities: Pisa, Genoa, Venice and Amalfi. Each city exhibits its own crew. This is a very spectacular event. It starts from the Church of St. Andrew the First-Called, then along the embankment and continues along the sea along the coast.
Amalfi is under the protection of UNESCO.
In addition to the famous cathedral, the city has the Church of St. Luke from the 16th century, the Chiostro del Paradiso Museum from the 13th century, which previously served as the tomb of the local nobility. Currently, this courtyard seems to be dotted with columns, arches, sarcophagi and many other elements.
Visit the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. It was built at the end of the 10th century, in the Byzantine style. Now you can observe elements of Baroque in it; it has become more magnificent, but has not lost its severity.
The paper museum is interesting. It is located on the territory of an old paper mill. Today you can see the manual process of making paper from linen and cotton. Tourists can buy various products made from such paper. This product is exclusive and expensive. Also visit the museum of weapons and finds and the seabed; probably, such a museum will appeal to people of any age! Here you can get acquainted with the history of the city’s development, see weapons, costumes, and navigational items. Well, the most important one is probably the Municipal Museum. After all, inside the ancient Town Hall you will not only see ancient interiors, but also get acquainted with all aspects of life: paintings, jewelry, coins and much more.
In the vicinity of Amalfi, a popular excursion is a trip to the Emerald Grotto. This is a natural formation, a cave, which can be reached by boat from the city pier. In the grotto you will see truly turquoise water, ancient walls, and the play of light and shadow.
There are other interesting places very close to Amalfi. So, you can go to Conca dei Marini - a small settlement 4 kilometers away. It's a cross between a fishing village and a fledgling resort. Clean water, beaches, coves - all those who are tired of noisy Amalfi will relax here.
It must be said that in small towns near Amalfi there is also something to see. These are museums and architecture: Villa Roma Antiquarium in Minori, the Church of St. Luke in Praiano and other beauties.
Things to do in Amalfi
There is a wonderful pastry shop on the square next to the cathedral. It has been here for several centuries, and the cakes that were made in the Middle Ages can still be tasted today. The cuisine of Calabria is very spicy: red onions, hot peppers, sausages! However, there are also natural soft products: pecorino cheese, sirloin pasta. Well, among the desserts, Tartuffo di Pizzo ice cream is famous here - the center is liquid, sometimes even hot.
Visit the wonderful city of Amalfi, try the signature drink limoncello. The entire coast is famous for its huge lemons. Not only the famous drink is produced from them, but also sweets and delicious confectionery. Another branch of the food industry is fish and seafood. Sardines, tuna, and swordfish are popular.
A meal in an inexpensive restaurant will cost an average of 12 euros for one, a meal for two tourists in a good restaurant will cost about 35 euros, and a dinner for two with drinks will cost about 70 euros.
The town will also delight shopaholics: Amalfi is famous for its shoe factory. Fine handmade shoes can be bought in a special store. The entire Amalfi Coast is famous for its ceramics. Not far from the city there is a factory for its production.
Amalfi will also appeal to lovers of active recreation: diving, horse riding, sailing, a variety of ball games - there is something for everyone. Well, the resort is also not far behind in terms of nightlife: at the height of the tourist season, parties are organized everywhere on the beaches.
Amalfi is located in a cozy cove, in the middle of the transport route between Salerno and Sorrento. By bus you can travel along the entire coast between these two cities. Nearby there are small cozy wonderful Italian towns: Maiori, Minori, Positano. They all deserve to be seen.
One of the popular local holidays is the summer festival of Limoncello. This liqueur is tasted, an image of the drink is installed in a variety of sculptural groups, and songs, dances, and shows are staged. But at other times, throughout the holiday season, residents constantly organize at least small local gatherings. Southern Italians differ from their northern counterparts in that the main thing here is not business and career, much more important is life in all its colors!
Perhaps there is no typical entertainment for children at the resort. There is an opportunity to fly over the coast on an airplane, and all sorts of excursions on water transport. But there is no large zoo or circus, or amusement parks in Amalfi. This is a city for a relaxing holiday alone with nature; local children also play simple games closer to nature. If desired, no one bothers you to go to the larger Naples, and perhaps build a program in advance so that the child will not be bored even with the input data.
The romantic, magical resort of Amalfi is the crown jewel of the Naples Riviera. It is loved by directors and screenwriters who use the landscapes of the ancient city to film their films. But even an ordinary tourist can take a photo session there as a souvenir, and put some things aside only in memory - for many centuries. Come to Amalfi - and positive emotions are guaranteed! South is able to introduce you to its entire coastline and the nearest islands, which means the trip will be eventful!

Their love was short-lived, and when it was over, Hercules wished to bury her in the most beautiful place on earth and give the name to the city built on this land. But this is a legend, and historically the city was founded after the death of Constantine; Roman families fleeing to Constantinople (modern Istanbul) were caught in a storm in the Gulf of Policastro (golfo di Policastro) and founded "Melfes", modern Melfi, and then, moving north, founded modern "A-Melfes".
History of Amalfi
The first mention of the city dates back to 533, during the Greco-Gothic wars, more precisely, to the victory of Narset at Theia, when it passed from the Byzantine Empire to. In the 6th century. became the center of the bishopric, which, in addition to purely religious functions, also defended the city. In 836 Sicardo, Duke of Benevento, besieged the city, exiling its inhabitants to Salerno. In 879 he was killed, and the city residents achieved power and autonomy until the end of the 11th century.
At first the city was a republic with two “prefects”, then “judges”, and with 958 “doges”. This principle was similar to self-government in, but in fact it was completely independent, with its own laws and its own currency. The need to protect their possessions, as well as maritime trade, forced the authorities from time to time to cooperate with the Saracens and Louis II against the Byzantines, who were trying to seize the Eastern Empire. The alliance with the Saracens was unstable and short-lived: in 915, after a major battle, they were defeated and expelled from the territory of the city. In 920 it was captured by the Amalfis (Reggio Calabria).
The heyday came during the period of independence that the city so longed for; however, limited territory and military inconsistency made this independence precarious. In 1039 Guaimario V, Prince of Salerno, took power in the duchy and limited the influence of Duke Mansone II.
The inhabitants, oppressed by Salerno, in 1073, led by Sergio IV, turned to Roberto Guiscardo. Salerno capitulated and the city was occupied by the Normans. After this there were many attempts to restore independence.
In 1135 it survived a terrible attack from Pisa, and from that time a period of decline began. In 1343, a terrible tsunami, described by Petrarch, hit the city’s coast; many buildings were destroyed: houses, fortifications, a port, warehouses. Five years later, in 1348, the plague described by Boccaccio occurred, and it contributed to the mood of the townspeople.
and other coastal towns, once beautiful and rich, with palaces and fountains, returned to a modest life and traditional sources of income: fishing, local crafts and agriculture. Only at the end of the 19th century. the city began to attract tourists again, which contributed to its economic recovery.
Amalfi attractions Among the monuments worth visiting Cathedral
. This is a majestic architectural complex. Its core is the northern basilica of the 9th century. with the altar facing east and the entrance facing west. This early Christian church was built on this very site for various reasons (central position, base of volcanic pumice, strong and compact), and today only columns and capitals remain. St Mary's Cathedral
Work to expand the complex began in the 13th century. on the initiative of Archbishop Matteo di Capua and Cardinal Pietro Capuano. The old basilica gradually lost its grandeur: already in 1176 only one nave remained from it (the nave of Saints Cosmas and Damiano); further, from 1180, a bell tower began to be erected in front of it. Finds of the 12th-13th centuries. – various fragments of a mosaic from two basilicas. Another important religious person of the city is Archbishop Filippo Augustariccio, who completed the construction of the bell tower in 1276. He also ordered the construction of the Paradiso Monastery (Chiostro Paradiso) in 1266-1268. In the 14th century the new cathedral was decorated with two Gothic spiers and a façade mosaic depicting St. Andrew the Apostle. At the beginning of the next century a new central dome appeared.
A global restructuring of the entire complex took place already in the New Time. In particular, the old cathedral acquired counter-reformist features; a large wooden crucifix was built. At the beginning of the 18th century. The appearance of the cathedral was greatly influenced by the reconstruction of Archbishop Michele Bologna: the antique columns were covered with marble pilasters, the ceiling of the central dome was covered with gold. At the end of the last century, the facade was badly damaged, and restoration work revealed the antique appearance of the facade - with columns, arches and mosaics - and forced the architects to do something similar. The work was completed in 1891. The mosaics depicted Christ during the Apocalypse with the four evangelists and twelve apostles.
At a distance of about a kilometer from the center is the town of Atrani, which has been associated with for years. A very picturesque place with 1000 inhabitants. During the Republic, noble families lived here and the Doges were buried here.

Geographically small, Amalfi seems literally “kissed by God”, because with its history, sea beauty and characteristic features it resembles a fairy-tale city from a magic novel, where there is unearthly love, battles, inventors, and sages. Isn't it a fairy tale? Let's plunge into it too.
Amalfi... According to legend, this was the name of the beautiful nymph whom Hercules himself loved. The beautiful maiden was buried here. And if we take much more prosaic sources, namely, historical chronicles, already in the 9th century Amalfi became no less than the first Italian Maritime Republic, ruled by the Doges. Until the 11th century, the republic only increased its power and had such weight throughout the Mediterranean Sea that later they could only be proud.
- We recommend the excursion:
According to eyewitnesses, the city had so much gold, silver, luxurious fabrics and jewelry that the most powerful eastern ruler could envy such wealth. People of different nationalities traded and lived in the city: Arabs, Africans, Indians. And in navigation, the Amalfians were at their best: the famous first maritime code Tabula Amalphitana was the law for all sailors of that time.
Flavio Gioia, who lived in the 14th century, did a lot of research, including improving the compass, and also collecting data for nautical navigation charts.
Externally, Amalfi looks like a fairy-tale city - sea, rocks, lush Italian vegetation; a city where every stone under your feet breathes history. Such beauty is breathtaking - it seems that this is a fairy tale within a fairy tale - Amalfi is like a large pearl in a necklace of equally beautiful cities in the province.
If you want to get involved in history, you can start with the cathedral, which is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the Italian South. The large church contains the relics of St. Andrew, which were transferred here in the 13th century.
In the commune (municipality) of Amalfi you can see the works of Domenico Morelli, as well as Pietro Scoppetta, those famous Tabula Amalphitana papers, the colorful clothes that residents wear at various processions and city festivals.
Finally, you can see the museum of the famous Amalfi handmade paper.
The museum is located in the old Amatruda paper mill. Each visitor can see the entire process of making paper manually using presses and other devices. Now this paper is highly valued and is used to make works of art. For example, the artist and photographer Enzo Rosamiglia, famous in the south of Italy, makes unique photographic works on Amalfi paper using special emulsions and aniline dyes, thereby creating the effect of an ancient painting.
The heart skips a beat from the panorama opening from the Amalfi cliffs - the sea, lemon trees, bright flowers, beaches...
Anyone who has seen this splendor at least once will always carry a piece of the Amalfi sun in his heart and strive to get to this paradise on earth again.
