The 2017 World Aquatics Championships have ended in Budapest. The Russian team repeated its own record for the number of medals won. Just like ten years ago in Melbourne, the Russians took home 25 medals (11 gold) from the championship, taking third place in the team event. Ahead are China and the USA, respectively. In 2007, however, only the United States was ahead. about the successes of Russian athletes.
Predictable triumph
The hegemony of Russian synchronized swimming representatives at the Olympics and World Championships has long become commonplace. For a decade and a half, synchronized swimmers have been making a huge contribution to the Russian national team’s medal count in the competition. Budapest was predictably no exception. Representatives of this type of program won seven gold and one silver medal. This is almost a third of the total number of Russian awards at the tournament!
Russians were represented in eight out of nine disciplines. It was decided to refuse to participate in the combination. As the President of the Russian Synchronized Swimming Federation said, they took such a step in order to give up one gold, giving the other team a chance to rejoice at the victory and increase interest in synchronized swimming in the world.
But the eighth gold was in the plans, but the mixed duet of Michaela Kalanci let Manila Flamini and Giorgio Minisini from Italy ahead in the technical program. The Russians lost to their opponents by 0.034 points, however, according to many experts, our athletes were simply condemned. This version is supported by the presence of Father Minisini among the arbitrators.

Jumping to Victory
Athletes competing in springboard diving brought gold, two silver and two bronze medals to the Russian national team. For representatives of this type of program, their performance at the 2017 World Cup was the most successful since the 2003 tournament in Barcelona, when the Russians won two medals of each value.
Silver medalists of the 2012 Olympics in London in synchronized diving from a three-meter springboard and stood in second place in this discipline and at world championships. Since 2011, three world championships have invariably ended with silver for the duo, but in Budapest the ambitious Russians still managed to break this tradition, leaving behind the main contenders for gold - the Chinese Xie Siyi and Cao Yuan. Zakharov also won bronze on the three-meter springboard.
The Chinese took revenge in synchronized diving from a ten-meter platform - and became second, behind athletes from the Celestial Empire Chen Aisen and. Their teammates of the fairer sex did not lag behind the Russian men. and won bronze in synchronized diving from a three-meter springboard. Bazhina also won silver on the meter springboard.
Triple triumph
The World Championships in Budapest were also super successful for Russian swimmers, who won three gold, three silver and four bronze. The Russians performed better at world championships only in 1994, when they had 11 medals (5, 4, 2). The leader of the Russian national team, who is under constant pressure from her competitors, collected a full collection of awards. The 25-year-old athlete has gold in the 200-meter breaststroke, silver in the 50-meter breaststroke, second place in the 4 x 100 medley relay and bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke.
The men also achieved historic achievements at the World Championships. 20-year-olds and won gold medals in the 200m backstroke and breaststroke respectively. These are the swimmers' first individual victories since the 2003 world championships in Barcelona. He swam well in the 100-meter breaststroke, although he only took bronze. Another award was won by finishing third in the 200-meter freestyle.
The men's relay teams also replenished the Russian team's treasury. They won silver in the 4x200 meter freestyle and bronze in the 4x100 meter medley relay. Another bronze medal was awarded to him, who competed in open water swimming at a distance of 25 kilometers.
They gave me the ball
Special attention in Budapest was focused on the team sport of water polo. The Russian women's team arrived at the tournament as a bronze medalist at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and in Hungary they managed to confirm their status as one of the leading teams in the world. The competition was not easy for the players: the team took third place in the group, after which they barely defeated the Netherlands team in the 1/8 finals (11:10). Then, in a tense match, the Italians beat the Italians (9:8), but in the semi-finals the future world champions, the Americans, turned out to be stronger (14:9). In the meeting for third place, the Russian team defeated Canada (11:9).
For the Russian men's water polo team, just getting to the World Championships is a great success. Since 2007, the Russians have not been able to qualify for three world championships, and at the 2015 tournament in Kazan, where the team qualified as the host of the competition, they became 14th. In Budapest, the men managed not only to overcome the group stage, but also beat the Spaniards in the 1/8 finals (11:10). After this there was a sensitive defeat (5:14) from the hosts of the tournament in the quarterfinals and the same outcome in the consolation stage meetings with Montenegro (8:9) and Australia (7:10). As a result, the Russians took eighth place in the tournament, which, taking into account the team’s recent results, can be considered a success.
Today, the 14 th of July in the Hungarian capital Budapest The World Aquatics Championships starts. The tournament, which is held every two years, will be held for the 17th time under the auspices of FINA (International Swimming Federation). Over 17 days of competition, 76 sets of medals will be played in six disciplines - swimming in the pool and open water, diving, high diving, synchronized swimming and water polo.
Initially, the Mexican city of Guadalajara was supposed to become the host of the water world championship. This decision was made at the FINA General Congress in Shanghai in July 2011. However, 4 years later, Mexico abandoned the World Cup for financial reasons, and the championship was given to Budapest, which put forward its candidacy for the 2021 World Cup.

The Danube Arena was built especially for the World Cup in the Hungarian capital, which was erected in just a year and a half. This aquatic complex is closed, and swimming and diving competitions will be held here. Synchronized swimmers and synchronized swimmers will show their programs in the Central City Park, where Lake Városliget was specially equipped for the tournament. The high diver competition will take place on Batthyany Square, where the tower is located. Athletes will dive directly into the Danube. The Alfred Hajos National Aquatic Stadium, which was built back in the 1950s, will host water polo matches. Lake Balaton, which is located 100 km southwest of Budapest, was chosen as the water area for open water swimming.

Swimming competitions at the FINA World Aquatics Championships started in Budapest on Sunday.
This is the most medal event at the World Complex Championships in Budapest. There will be 42 sets of awards up for grabs.
The swims will take place at the main venue of the tournament - Duna Arena, where only divers competed before the start of the swimming tournament.
“We have won everything we planned at the World Aquatics Championships at the moment. In principle, the results are not bad. In synchronized swimming, we won everything possible. In diving, we won a gold medal. There are a lot of silver and bronze awards. "Open water is also a good result. All our events are competitive. Now it's up to our swimmers, we will expect medals from them. Good luck!" - Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Vitaly Mutko admonished the Russian swimming team.
At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Russian team won four medals. Yulia Efimova won two silver medals in breaststroke, bronze medals were won by Anton Chupkov and Evgeniy Rylov. All three will start at the World Championships in Budapest.
The qualification for participation in the World Championship was the Russian Championship in April, where swimmers had to fulfill the selection conditions. The only one who was included in the national team by decision of the coaching staff after the fact was, who is considered as a candidate for the freestyle relay.
The current World Cup winner Vladimir Morozov came to this World Cup as a favorite. After the Games, he successfully competed in short course, including at the World Championships in Windsor, Canada. Morozov himself admitted that he now has a very clear priority at individual distances. “This is a fifty-kopeck crawl, the work is designed primarily for him,” he said.
After the Russian Championship, the team competed at the stages of the international competition "Mare Nostrum", some of the leaders swam in the final of the Russian Cup in Moscow, including team captain Anastasia Fesikova, who returns to Budapest seven years later.
“To the city where I did not compete at the European Championships, then I had a back injury,” she recalled. “For me, this is the first competitive Budapest. This time, I hope I will swim in it. So much has happened during this time. So much everything happened, you can feel it. Our team now is young, there are fewer and fewer older athletes, more and more young people. But it’s good, it’s great, I like being part of this team.”
“In general, we calmly and restrainedly assess our results shown before the World Cup, and the American selection added optimism to us. The results of the Americans in some types of the program are tough for us,” admitted the head coach of the Russian national team
Since the solo discipline appeared in synchronized swimming, thousands of spectators around the world have been wondering: what should be synchronized in the performance of one athlete? In just a week, this discrepancy can be eliminated by a decision of the main FINA congress, which will most likely rename synchronized swimming to artistic. However, no matter what this sport is called, Russia will certainly remain in the leading roles in it in the coming years, because both coaches and athletes work hard for hours to always take a place only at the top of the podium of any competition.
The first set of medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest in synchronized swimming was played out in the solo discipline, in the technical program. The Russian woman made her debut alone at competitions of this level, but coped well with the pressure and brought the Russian team its first world championship gold.
Debut of a Russian soloist
At its core, a technical program is a set of certain technical elements interconnected into a beautiful performance, to which judges mainly pay attention. Whoever performs these elements most efficiently, gracefully and effectively will win.
The qualifying competitions, held in the outdoor pool of Budapest on July 14, caused fans of the Russian team to worry. – an experienced athlete, Olympic champion, nine-time world champion, who won her first title in 2011. However, this was the first time in her career that she performed at such a high level alone. However, the worries were in vain: according to the results of the qualifying competitions, the athlete took first place, scoring more than 94 points.
The competitors are well behind: the most experienced Spaniard She's Carbonell did not even reach the mark of 92.5 points. Japanese Inui and Ukrainian Voloshina received even less from the judges. Therefore, the Russian woman could feel confident. As always, the Russian synchronized swimmer could only lose to herself, but something like this had not happened for almost two decades. It should not have happened in the final on July 15th either.
Tears of happiness for a Ukrainian woman
On the day of the final, the weather in Budapest was not pleasant. There was a breeze blowing over the outdoor pool, which the athletes had to fight against. Our girls arrived in Hungary in advance to get used to the conditions in which the World Championships are being held, and therefore neither the specific light, nor the wind, nor the coolness should have become an obstacle for them.
Among the top six, ready to fight for medals, the Italian was the first to appear on the side of the pool Linda Cerruti. The contrast with the Korean, who performed two minutes earlier, was obvious: Linda looked very favorably against her background, received 88.3369 points and took first place in the standings. Temperamental Japanese woman Yukiko Inui, however, managed to outshine its competitor. She performed the elements well, and therefore earned 91.7490 from the judges and an intermediate first place at the time the next athlete began performing.
However, the girls performed one better than the other: Ukrainian Anna Voloshina made only a couple of small mistakes and deserved a very high score. The score of 91.9992 allowed Voloshina to take first place and practically guaranteed a World Championship medal, and therefore, upon seeing the score, Anna could not hold back her tears of joy. But Carbonell, as expected, pushed the Ukrainian into second place, receiving 93.6534.
To a new, golden circle!
And then all the Russian fans held their breath: a graceful woman, starting number 11, came out to the pool. She again showed that Russian synchronized swimmers have no equal in the world. Her actions were incredibly graceful, soft, bewitching. The height of some elements was simply amazing. And Kolesnichenko did all this outwardly calmly, calmly, and sometimes with a smile. It was possible to congratulate Svetlana on her first gold medal at the World Championships in solo without waiting for the judges' scores, although they also appreciated the performance - 95.2036.
Russian synchronized swimming at the beginning of the new Olympic cycle, without slowing down, seems to have entered a new golden circle. All that remains is to wholeheartedly congratulate Svetlana on winning the first gold for our team at the World Championships in Budapest and stand still in anticipation of the next finals. You can enjoy synchronized swimming and our victories in it for another whole week!
