Ski resort Malinovka in the Arkhangelsk region: northern Italy. Shangaly, Malinovka Malinovka sports and recreation complex
According to tradition, at the beginning of 2008 I went to the Arkhangelsk region. Last year I was in for a big disappointment in the form of far from northern weather, but this time everything was very good. “Beautiful,” I thought, watching from the window the landscapes of the Russian north, illuminated by the winter sun. Who, apparently reading my thoughts, decided not to appear for a week. February was beginning.
Shangaly is a fairly large village in the Ustyansky district of the Arkhangelsk region. I can also call this area my historical homeland, since my mother’s parents come from here, and I have many relatives living here.
In Soviet times, Shangaly was a regional center, but closer to perestroika it was moved to the more convenient village of Oktyabrsky, which is 15 minutes away by car. The former status is evidenced by a typical two-story house from the fifties, where the district committee used to be located.
Most of the houses are wooden, which is much more practical in the north. Firstly, there is a lot of wood here, and it costs less than brick, and secondly, wooden houses are much better suited to the local climate.
There are very old houses, built back in the thirties, such as this three-story house with interesting traditional carvings. But the amenities are located outside.
To compensate for the lack of these amenities, almost everyone here has baths, concentrated on the banks of reservoirs.
In principle, in Russia you won’t surprise anyone by washing clothes in an ice hole, collecting firewood or using a well.
It is clear that there is quite comfortable housing, but still most of the development consists of private houses, traditional for the Russian countryside.
And those who have money prefer something more original. Apparently, things were going well for this guy, but then some problems appeared - the mansion turned into a long-term construction project.
Even the oldest houses, despite the lack of toilets, are covered with satellite dishes.
After all, with the usual ones you can only watch “First”, “Russia” and “Vesti-Sport” (the latter with a very poor signal). Vesti-Sports is a very useful channel here, because the people, no joke, are sporty. As far as I understand, local skiers often take all the prizes at national championships. Which is not surprising - you get up at 9 in the morning, look out the window, and there are young people training with might and main in the gardens.
There is a school nearby, the tallest building in this locality. And students go skiing in physical education. They can’t imagine physical education without skiing in the north; I remember the outright surprise of a girl from Severomorsk who learned that we had never skied in physical education.
It’s not clear why specifically in the gardens, because next to the school there is a stadium covered with snow.
According to the sign, disabled people are running across the road.
The shangals have a very elongated shape, and stretch along the rather long main street, which bears the name, you would never guess, st. Lenin.
So long that residents have to take a bus to get from one end of the village to the other. In addition to the bus, timber trucks constantly drive along Lenin Street at high speed. To the west - empty, to the east - loaded with pine round timber. Timber trucks travel very often, clearly showing that if there is still something left in Russia, it is only because initially there was a lot of it. Only after seeing such a barbaric scale do you begin to understand the meaning of the phrase “Russia is a raw material power.”
The center of Shingal consists of modern shops. By the way, the assortment there is normal, but everything costs much more than in Belgorod.
There are also a couple of offices there for connecting to cellular communications represented by Megafon, which I hate (I must admit that Megafon acted quite wisely, expanding into “unprofitable” areas of the country. Although MTS also receives services here, from the point of view of Megafon subscribers here, and in many other places also a monopolist).
Finally, there is a cultural center where my second cousin’s wife, who knows local folklore well, organizes events.
The cultural center has a good collection of various antique utensils from all over the area, so that one could open a local history museum. They are also engaged in the restoration of old crafts.
There is production in Shingala, and it is even developing. The nineties had a very hard impact on the entire country, but they had an even harder impact on the countryside, especially in areas with low population density and far from the center.
I saw several workshops that were producing something. But it seems that the most promising industry here (besides deforestation, of course) is tourism.
Malinovka is a village located on the other side of the Ustya River from Shingal. My grandmother spent her childhood there.
You can get there by crossing the river.
If it is impossible to cross on ice, then there is a suspension bridge, which appeared several years ago and has greatly helped residents. Before this, it was impossible to get to the other side; to do this, you had to walk several kilometers to the road bridge.
Malinovka is a winter resort. There is a ski base here with good trails of varying lengths (up to ten kilometers) and a children’s and youth sports school, the students of which, as I already said, show decent results not only locally, but also on a national scale. Credit for this must be given to the family of local entrepreneurs and philanthropists.
The ski track goes through the centuries-old northern taiga. The snow was so deep that I could have fallen waist-deep.
Just fabulous places with a real Russian winter, there’s no other way to put it.
Tourists who come here stay in a tourist village, where it is very civilized, comfortable and equipped “in a European style.” I have vacationed at similar winter resorts in the USA, and here, I’ll tell you, it’s no worse. The village is expanding rapidly.
The gentlemen are resting solidly.
And local children have something to do.
And in January the ski slope also opened. For extreme sports enthusiasts, of course, it’s a little low, but inexperienced people will like it. If the clouds are low, light is reflected from them and from a distance creates the illusion of the northern lights.
So there is a future here.
