Architecture of Europe Square
The unique architectural ensemble of the Square of Europe creates an amazing view of the ancient quarter, surrounded by artsy streets and bizarre-looking buildings. Some of the buildings around the Square date back to the 18th century. Each of the buildings is different from its neighbors and attracts the eye with decorative decorations - wooden panels, stained glass windows, sculptures, bas-reliefs, mosaics. The facades of ancient buildings have been restored and make a pleasant impression. Ancient and modern buildings on the Square of Europe harmoniously combine with each other, adding extravagance to the appearance of the Square. A 40-meter sculpture with a statue of Medea on top of the pedestal was installed in the center of Europe Square in 2007. The statue is a stone statue of the daughter of the Colchis king with the legendary Golden Fleece in her outstretched hand. The fleece, crown and necklace of the princess, the decor of the statue's pedestal are covered with gold leaf. The installation of the sculpture was initiated by the former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili. The author of the statue is Georgian sculptor David Khmaladze.

According to legend, Medea is the youngest daughter of King Aeetes, the ruler of Colchis, an ancient kingdom located on the territory of modern Western Georgia in ancient times. Eetus owned the Golden Fleece - a magical guarantee of wealth and prosperity that made Colchis one of the richest ancient kingdoms. When the Argonauts arrived in Colchis to take the golden skin of a ram, Medea fell in love with their leader Jason. The princess helped take possession of Rune and escaped with Jason from Colchis on the ship Argo. In mythology, Medea is known as a skilled pharmacist who had the gift of healing the sick. Medea is called the founder of medicine. The very word “medicine” comes from the name of the Colchis princess.
Astronomical clock. Europe Square
The astronomical clock on Europe Square is a unique mechanism that unites Batumi with ancient European cities. There are only a few similar clocks in the world, installed, as a rule, on the towers of famous buildings in Europe - the Old Town Hall in Prague, in the Strasbourg Cathedral, on the clock tower of the Cité Palace in Paris.
Astronomical clock and gilded figures on the sides of the dial
The ultra-precise mechanism displays time in 12/24 hour format and astronomical information: location, time of sunrise and sunset, solar ecliptic indicator - the zodiac sign in which the Sun is currently located; position and phases of the moon; sidereal (sidereal) time, measured by the position of stars; sides of the horizon. The bezels, numbers, and decorative elements on the huge dial of the astronomical clock are gilded. The ends of the hands on the clock are decorated with figures of the sun and moon. In the center of the dial is a gilded image of the ancient Greek goddess Latona (Summer). Every hour the astronomical clock strikes a melody.

The watch is made in Germany. Installation of the mechanism cost the Batumi authorities 1,700,000 lari (635,000 USD). Near the clock tower there is a stand with a description of the clock in Georgian, English, and Russian.
Stained glass window on the former National Bank building. Europe Square
An elaborate stained glass window depicting St. George the Victorious and scenes from national scenes on a rectangular window of 9 square meters also adorns the façade of the former National Bank building. The author of the stained glass is Estonian stained glass artist Dolores Hoffmann. Initially, the city authorities wanted the stained glass window to depict a scene from the legend of the Argonauts. But Dolores regarded the Argonauts as strangers and invaders, and offered her own option - St. George the Victorious, defender of Georgia. Georgians positively greeted and supported the author's idea.

Fountain. Europe Square
There is an interesting fountain in the center of the pedestrian part of Europe Square. The rectangular base of the fountain is equipped at the same level with the paving stones. Thin arc-shaped jets of water from the fountain shoot straight out of the ground. Streams of water fly up through the grate, on which, if desired, you can walk freely without getting wet. Children especially enjoy running among the jets of the fountain and playing with the water. In the summer heat, the fountain on the Square of Europe gives welcome coolness.

Batumi
Terrible holiday. Batumi as it really is.
We prepared for this trip for a long time and thoroughly. We wanted to enjoy Georgian cuisine, architecture, sea and hospitality. But it was not there. It all started at the border. 9 hours of waiting in a traffic jam without toilets or any conditions. Next was the pass, the most beautiful I must say, then another 6 hours to Batumi. And then a shock awaited us!So, today I am ready to show you the true face of Batumi. The city that we are used to seeing in advertising photos, reading as it turned out in custom articles, is a super resort, the personification and symbol of the new Georgia. Of everything you see in advertising, a maximum of 20% is built. The rest is either adjusted or simply abandoned. And all this is just on the coastline. But what happens next, look at these photos. People live almost simply in concrete boxes, dilapidated, dilapidated housing. A lot of houses are still under construction, that is, not finishing is in progress, but the construction of the upper floors is underway, and people are already living in it. There is unsanitary conditions everywhere, garbage everywhere, the smell of a big garbage dump, narrow dirty sidewalks. Something is always falling, dripping, etc. from the floors of houses. The locals probably like it.
Now about the vaunted hospitality. They had never heard of him in this city. Everyone wants to fuck you. in a store, in a small shop, in a park, in a restaurant, in a cafe, on the beach. In the store there are no concepts of expiration date and quality of goods, by the way, in Georgia there are no sanitary inspection stations, fire supervision and traffic police. In the restaurant we had, I ordered veal kebab, they brought me a kebab of six meager pieces, about 150 grams. I ask how much a portion of kebab should weigh - 250, the waiter answers. They called the admin and said we'll change it. They bring it on a skewer, but it’s pork and the chef explains to me that it’s veal))). Ask the waiter to decipher the bill because their bills are always in Georgian. We had one extra dish and the wine was much more expensive than what we ordered. After a long showdown with the admin, the director and a whole bunch of other people, we told them to call the police. But here she really gets pissed! As a result, they brought us a check with a normal amount, which, apparently, had already been thrown into the bin! And they have this in every establishment.
It is generally impossible to drive on the roads; traffic is not regulated. Everyone drives as they please, honking, yelling, throwing garbage out of the windows, they can stop and find out which of them has the biggest balls! It is almost impossible for a pedestrian to cross the road, and in the dark it is generally better to stay at home. There is no lighting on the streets.
The beaches here are not equipped at all. Hills of large pebbles. There is trash everywhere, beggars and vendors selling all sorts of crap. The sea in the area of the central beach is also not very clean. Locals say that you want an oil refinery nearby. Children's attractions in the embankment area have been standing since the time of the Great Flood, half of them are not working. And in general, for the most part it doesn’t work here. They start swinging around 17:00.
Embankment. Everything seems to be fine, but this is only in the area of the park and the DNA building. The rest, like everywhere else, is not in very good condition. You can only ride the bike path normally in the morning. Then the traffic there becomes the same as on city roads. We have witnessed several attacks on children, collisions, etc.
Hospitality. There are people in Batumi who are really happy to see you, but there are very few of them. Basically the opposite. Don't expect anyone to smile at you here, even for your money. Taxi drivers are generally a separate darkness. The driver can smoke while transporting passengers, yell through you at other drivers, and can start racing, despite the fact that he has passengers with small children in the cabin. Your questions may not receive an answer - they will be completely ignored. The only thing they know is LAR. In any free space where you parked today, tomorrow there may be a sign with the inscription in felt-tip pen or chalk: PARKING 5 GEL! Why the fright? On the road they can try to scam you out of money, this happened to us. We really quickly pulled out of there.
Georgian cuisine. It doesn't even smell like that here. To find a decent cafe with high-quality Georgian cuisine, you need to travel 30-40 km, for example to Kobuleti, and you can eat normally there. But not in Batumi. For the money we spent here, we could have had a much more enjoyable holiday in Europe. In short, the holiday was not a success. We haven't had such a bad vacation yet.
If you want our advice. I do not recommend holidays in Batumi, especially in your own car. 9 hours of crossing the border for the sake of this shit is not worth your nerves and impressions, unless you are a complete masochist)))
Choose your holiday destinations carefully. Look not only at advertising posts, but also scour the internet more thoroughly.

History and sights of the city of Batumi
Flag of Batumi city
The history of the city of Batumi begins before our era. At that time the city was called Batus, which means “deep” in Greek.
Obviously, this name is associated with the port. After all, since its inception, Batumi has been a strategically important site and served as a “gate to the sea.”
At the beginning of the 21st century, Batumi was rebuilt by European architects and became the newest city in Georgia. It organically combines old streets and buildings with modern skyscrapers and architectural innovations.
Since 2008, the city consists of 7 districts: Old Batumi, Khimshiashvili, Bagrationi, Agmashenebeli, Javakhishvili, Tamar and Boni-Gorodok.
In addition to a well-developed tourism business, Batumi has a well-developed economy. The largest industrial and industrial facilities: a port, oil and container terminals, there are oil refineries and shipbuilding plants, as well as light industry enterprises - a coffee factory, tea and tobacco factories, a pharmaceutical factory and others.
Climate and weather in Batumi
Batumi, like the entire Adjarian coast, has a humid subtropical climate. This means that winters here are warm and summers are hot.
Summer on the coast begins in the second half of May. However, it is not always possible to swim at this time; the sea may not have time to warm up to the optimal temperature.
The best period for summer holidays, sunbathing and swimming is from mid-June to the end of September. The sea water at this time is very pleasant, and nature fascinates with its beauty.
The hot season and, accordingly, the holiday season ends in October. But this does not mean that after this Batumi will be uninteresting and unattractive for tourists.
The “velvet season” begins in September-October; at this time the weather here is warm and sunny.
Winter in Batumi is almost always without snow. The winter period here is no less interesting than the summer.
The presence of mountains in Batumi dictates the development trends of alpine skiing. If snow does fall, it becomes a real event.
What to see in Batumi and the surrounding area
Batumi is famous for its attractions.

If you want to enjoy the excellent nature and special microclimate of Batumi beaches, a great time for this is early morning. At this time there are not many people on the beach, you can admire the sunrise and take beautiful photographs.

The main attractions of Batumi are concentrated in the old town. The boundaries of the district are Gogebashvili, Demeter Tavdadebuli, Gorgiladze, Chavchavadze streets, Rustaveli Avenue, Nikoloz Baratashvili street. An ancient atmosphere reigns here, inspired by architectural buildings of past centuries, majestic monuments of antiquity, statues of heroes of traditions and legends. All this is in harmony with modern buildings, small cafes, shops and artisan workshops.
Among all the city's attractions, the Square of Europe or Argonauts, as locals call it, is considered the pearl of Old Batumi. In the center stands the famous statue of Medea, with whose name the word medicine is associated. The square hosts important holidays and celebrations for the city, as well as concerts by world music stars. On New Year's Day there is a decorated Christmas tree here. In the evening, the buildings are illuminated, spotlights and lanterns are turned on, the light of which makes it bright as during the day.
Monument to the owner of Adjara
Located opposite the astronomical clock tower, on the corner of Konstantin Gamsakhurdia Street. Next to the monument is an information stand about the years of life and activity of this person, behind it is the red brick building of the government of Adjara. In the last century, during the period of tsarism, Memed Abashidze, a politician, writer and philanthropist, played a key role in the annexation of Adjara not to Turkey, but to Georgia, and became a victim of Stalinist repressions. The author of the monument is sculptor Elguja Amashukeli.
Astronomical clock
Memed Abashidze Street separates it from Europe Square. They are located on the facade of a four-story building reminiscent of a Disneyland castle: with a pointed tower, sculpted figures, multi-colored stained glass windows and arched windows. The first floor of the building was previously occupied by the Detsky Mir store, which moved not so long ago (the new address is Abashidze Street 5).
The round dial on the tower is designed in the form of a celestial sphere. In the center is the earth, it is surrounded by zodiac constellations and three circles of numbers. Moving arrows with figures show the exact time and astronomical data: sunrise and sunset, moon phases, sides of the horizon, meridian. Melodic music plays every hour. A stand near the road opposite the tower helps you understand what the arrows show.
Statue of Medea with the Golden Fleece
It has stood in the center of Europe Square since 2007. The information board nearby tells the following:
- The author of the monument is Georgian sculptor David Khmaladze.
- Medea is a Colchian princess, the founder of medicine and a sorceress, the beloved of the Greek Argonaut Jason.
The daughter of King Eeta fled with him on the ship Argo, stealing the Golden Fleece - a talisman of prosperity for that country. Today, the majestic statue of Medea with a gilded golden fleece in her right hand is a reminder to all generations of the ancient ties of Georgia with Europe and the similarities of their cultures.
Fountain
Stylized as the flag of the European Union, it is interesting for children as entertainment. Thin single jets of water shoot upward through the holes of a bright blue rectangular lattice. It is set flush with the red brick lining the area and surrounded by light-colored tiles. You can walk between the jets without getting wet.
Casino Princess
Conducts raffles and show programs for guests. Organizes gifts, drinks, buffet tables. Guest and local performers perform on stage. The casino is located in a beautiful high-rise building. Several floors were added not long ago by the Turks. They bought the low post office building that previously housed it, restored it, preserving the ancient architectural style, and opened a hotel with a casino.
