Accompanying children on an airplane. Rules for the transportation of unaccompanied children. Do I need to pay for a child?
During the summer holidays, most parents of schoolchildren prefer to send their children to nature or a resort. However, in most cases, the desired destination is thousands of kilometers away, and adults are tormented by the issue of moving a child. Let's consider whether it is possible to accompany children on the plane and how much such a flight will cost.
First, let's determine that the cost of a ticket depends on the age of the child.
Two-year-old children are allowed on international flights subject to payment of 70% of the full ticket price. Domestic flights are paid at half the fare. It is from this age that some airlines allow children to travel alone. However, most Russian carriers do not support such a policy and insist on the mandatory presence of guardians or parents until the age of five.
When the child turns five (in some companies - two) years old, parents have the right to send him on an independent voyage and order an escort service from the carrier. This service involves the supervision of an airline employee for the baby until the child disembarks from the aircraft.
The question at what age can a child fly unaccompanied on an airplane is difficult to answer unequivocally. Some companies restrict children under 12 years of age from flying independently. However, other carriers insist on fifteen years of age. Although twelve-year-old teenagers are already deprived of all benefits. For a seat on the plane here, parents will have to pay the full amount.
Medical nuances
Today, leading specialists from the best clinics in Russia are confident that flights are not contraindicated for infants from three months of age. The only exceptions here will be congenital diseases that threaten the health of children. In addition, doctors advise refraining from flying if a toddler under two years old has contracted an acute viral infection or the flu. That is, from a medical point of view, flights are possible for children of any age, provided the baby is healthy.
List of papers for baby's independent flight
Let's consider the nuances of such an enterprise as sending a child alone on a plane across Russia. When intending to carry out this event, parents should prepare the necessary documentation for the flight. The list of papers is as follows:
- Identity confirmation documents. Here, airlines accept the baby's passport or birth certificate for consideration.
- Compulsory medical insurance policy. Mandatory document for domestic and international flights
- Air ticket. You can purchase an air ticket in any way convenient for you, but check-in for the flight will require the mandatory presence of the sending party and the baby at the counter.
- Parental consent for flights. In this situation, the father and mother sign permission for the teenager to travel independently and notarize the paper.
- Document on health status (for medical reasons). Transportation of medicine in hand luggage on a plane is allowed only after presentation of documents that a particular medicine is necessary to maintain normal human life. This requirement also applies to children.
In addition, during registration, parents fill out a special form, indicating accurate and complete information about themselves and the little one. The initials of the person who will meet the offspring upon arrival are also specified there. Please note that relatives who have agreed to meet your baby take identification documents with them - after all, the flight attendant will hand the little one over only to the person indicated in the accompanying papers.
If you are planning to fly to another country, it is appropriate to ensure that your children obtain a foreign passport and, if necessary, a visa. Of course, these papers complement the list listed above. Since we have decided on the question of whether it is possible to send a child on an airplane alone, we will consider the specific details of such an event using the example of a well-known airline.
Offer from Aeroflot Group
Since this company is today considered the oldest and largest in the Russian Federation, let us clarify on what conditions it will be possible to cooperate with “ Aeroflot" Accompanying a child, the cost of such an airline service and the rules that apply to passengers will be the main criteria for our review. When choosing flights with this airline, parents have the right to send their child on an independent voyage from the age of five. However, a student needs mandatory adult supervision until the age of 12. And you will be able to voluntarily use such a service until your child’s sixteenth birthday.
Thus, parents have the right to either send their child under the supervision of a relative or friend, or order the service “accompanying the child on the plane.” " Aeroflot» offers a full range of services: from boarding the baby to leaving the aircraft cabin. In addition, during scheduled flight connections, the flight attendant sees off the children and supervises the transfer to the next plane.
However, if there is a flight on an international flight, parents are obliged to study the nuances of the legislation of the country where the child is being sent, or the state where the connection is taking place. Plus, booking a babysitting company early will ensure that you don't get unexpected cancellations. Keep in mind that the number of such children on the plane is limited.
If you take into account the cost, do not forget that for a teenager who flies on his own, the parents pay for the air ticket in full. To accompany a schoolchild on domestic flights, airlines ask to pay 3,400 rubles. An international flight with this service will cost 40 euros. Conversion into domestic currency here occurs at the current rate at the time of registration of the service.
Company rules
Today, only the child’s parents or current guardians will be able to order an escort service. To formalize such agreements, you will have to present documents to the company employee that confirm the official status of the applicant and prove the relationship. In addition, check-in here is only possible at the airport counter. Of course, timely presence at the airport becomes a guarantee of successful boarding of the baby on board the aircraft.
The presence of luggage and hand luggage is also strictly regulated. Do not forget that this standard regulates the basic fare of an air ticket. Typically, in such situations, airlines do not offer discounts for toddlers and only allow allowed baggage in a specified size on board.
During registration, the child's accompanying person presents a package of travel documents, his passport, papers indicating that the service has been paid for and special forms that are mandatory for the provision of a service of this kind. An example of filling out an application is available at the link, and a sample of writing an application can be found. The person accompanying you remains on the territory of the take-off and landing complex until the aircraft takes off.
As for the person listed on the paperwork as the receiving party, he will be required to be present at the airport on time and have a photo ID. All accompanying papers are placed in a folder and secured to the baby’s chest. This measure becomes a necessity and a basic rule for airlines.
Additional service
Accompanying a child is not limited to the standard range of services. If desired, for an additional payment, parents can clarify the list of services offered by the airline. There is a special menu available for children of different religions, as well as dietary dishes recommended for medical reasons.
When the child has a transfer, parents have the right to pay for the provision of additional services: food and drinks while the child is waiting for the next plane
Considering that connecting flights do not provide free meals when waiting for the plane for up to three hours, parents have the right to pay for drinks for their child. For domestic flights the fee is 400 rubles, and for flights abroad the service will cost five euros. Food for a child during long layovers costs 1,700 rubles when flying within Russia, and 20 euros when a student flies to another country.
There is no need to worry about the quality of the products - because the food for children here is fresh and meets all sanitary standards. Moreover, the food is served at the stipulated time. To place an order for an additional service, parents should contact the company no later than 36 hours from the scheduled departure time. Don't forget, this service is limited and requires early booking.
Try to strictly follow airline requirements. Remember, the absence of the necessary document or payment not made in full will cause the company to refuse to take the baby on board. Therefore, take the bureaucratic stage of such a procedure seriously. Pay special attention to this point if you intend to purchase a non-refundable air ticket.
On the plane, specially trained staff will ensure that your child’s flight is successful.
Of course, modern opportunities make it possible to send both a preschooler and a teenager on an independent trip. However, it is important for parents to remember that responsibility for the life and health of their baby rests solely with them. Airlines provide an escort service, but the official guardian is responsible for the toddler.
According to airline rules, a child can fly on an airplane from the moment of birth, but only in the presence of a parent or guardian
Today, parents of children over five years old can send their child to fly alone
In order for your child to be allowed on the flight, you will have to collect the necessary documents.
Aeroflot airline insists on mandatory payment for accompanying a child under 12 years of age
The cost of such a service will be 3,400 rubles for a domestic flight or 40 euros if you need to fly abroad
Go to another city to visit your grandmother, but your parents are not allowed to leave work? Or does your daughter need to fly to England to study at college? Or maybe the child needs to be urgently sent to Israel for treatment?
No problem! Now most airlines around the world have such a service as transporting children unaccompanied by relatives.
To make your trip successful, you need to know the rules for accompanying children on the plane.

The “Accompanying a child on an airplane” service can only be ordered by parents or guardians.
The “Accompanying children on an airplane” service is not offered by all carriers. This must be clarified before purchasing tickets.

It is advisable to choose direct flights, without transfers.
Children are not accepted for transportation if the transfer point requires moving to another airport.
Service cost
The service “Accompanying a child on an airplane” is provided on a paid basis.
The cost depends on the following points:
- Places to buy an air ticket.
- Flight type (domestic or international).
- Flight range.
- Age of the minor passenger.
Ticket price for ordered escort service
A ticket for an unaccompanied child is 100% of the adult fare (no discounts available) and must be purchased in advance.
What documents are required?
The exact set of documents depends on what kind of flight it is - domestic or international. You may need:
- Birth certificate.
- International passport.
- Ticket.
- Consent from both parents for children under 18 years of age to travel accompanied by an airline representative, indicating the country and timing (signed by a notary).
- Insurance policy.
- Visa.
- A prescription with an extract from the medical history, if the child will have medications with him.
At the departure airport
Unaccompanied minors can only be checked in at the airport, so you must arrive in advance.
Children must be accompanied by one of the parents or another “friend” adult representative. The accompanying person must have documents with a photograph confirming his identity.
The adult registers the child for the flight, fills out special documents: an application and an accompanying sheet.
The application contains all the necessary information (selectively, depending on whether the flight is domestic or international):
- Child's full name.
- Age.
- The language the child speaks.
- Country of Residence.
- Full name, address and telephone number of the representative sending the child.
- Route.
- Departure day.
- Flight number.
- Full name, address and telephone number of the representative meeting the child.
The accompanying sheet contains information about the airline representative and the flight attendant - that is, about those who will accompany the child.
When flying unaccompanied children, baggage is accepted in accordance with current regulations. A special label must be attached to it, containing contact information.
It is advisable that the child take a minimum of things with him to the salon.
Children are given a special bag with documents and the inscription “Unaccompanied Child” and it is explained that they cannot lose it and must always have it with them.
Set of documents:
- Ticket.
- Boarding pass.
- Baggage receipt.
- Application for escort service.
- Accompanying sheet.
- Birth certificate.
- International passport.
At the airport, parents hand over their children to the airline representative indicated on the accompanying sheet. This employee goes through all checks with each child. Then he escorts him onto the plane and hands him over to the flight attendant indicated on the accompanying sheet.
Parents must be at the airport terminal before the plane departs.
During the flight
The child is boarded first on the plane, before the rest of the passengers board, in a comfortable and safe seat.
During the entire flight, children are constantly looked after by flight attendants who undergo special training, where they are taught the rules of communicating with children and how to solve all their problems.
Flight attendants accompany them to the toilet, answer all questions and even entertain (the airline usually gives each child a play set).
At the arrival airport
After landing, the child is the last to be taken off the plane, and the flight attendant hands him over to an employee at the destination airport.
If the flight has a transfer, then a representative of the company accompanies the children to the entrance to the airliner. While waiting for a transfer, they will be offered soft drinks, juices, tea (already paid for escort services when ordering).
The child is under the supervision of a representative until the meeting person specified in the application arrives (he must have a document confirming his identity), even if this person is late.
If he never arrived at the airport, then the airline employees will call the parents and do as they say (they will deliver the accompanied child to the specified address or send him home on the next flight). In this case, you will have to pay additional costs.
Accompanying a child. Aeroflot
- The “Accompanying children on an airplane” service is provided only on your own flight.
- The service of accompanying a child on an Aeroflot plane is paid: its price is 40 euros one way.
- When ordering a service, the cost of the ticket is 100% of the fare, without a discount.
- Sheremetyevo Airport at Terminal D has rooms for unaccompanied children that are open 24 hours a day. Here, a child can play on the computer and watch cartoons while waiting to board a flight.
- A child who needs special meals due to medical conditions or other reasons, you can order it for free when purchasing a ticket, but no later than one and a half days before the flight.
- While the transfer is awaiting, children will be offered a refreshing drink, juices, tea (if the transfer time is up to 3 hours) and hot food (if the transfer time is up to 6 hours). All this is paid for when ordering an escort service, if transfers are provided (5 and 20 euros, respectively).
What do those who have used such a service as accompanying children on an Aeroflot plane think? Reviews from people who have used this service are overwhelmingly positive, expressing gratitude to the airline staff for their attentive attitude towards the child.
It is very convenient that children have a bag (or file) with documents hung around their necks, where each company representative notes on the accompanying sheet: from whom they received the child and to whom they gave it to them.
They note that often a young traveler from economy class is even transferred to business class.
Accompanying a child on an Aeroflot plane is organized in such a way that little passengers feel comfortable. During the entire flight, flight attendants constantly approach the children and ask if they want to drink or go to the toilet, if they are cold, if anything hurts. If a child is bored, read a book or tell him a story.
The company usually gives children gifts, such as a tin suitcase containing crayons, stickers, coloring books, etc., which gives the children the opportunity to engage in an exciting game - and the flight time flies by!
A widely known case occurred in 2012 when two brothers, nine and five years old, flew unaccompanied from Moscow to New York. During the flight, the eldest of them developed a severe stomach ache and a fever - acute appendicitis was suspected. An unexpected emergency landing was made in Reykjavik. Flight attendant Mikhail accompanied both brothers to the hospital, where the sick boy was thoroughly examined. Fortunately, everything worked out fine. The guys, accompanied by Mikhail, arrived in New York, where they were met by a tearful but smiling mother.
Sometimes people write that flight attendants do not pay attention to young travelers throughout the flight, placing their work on the passengers sitting next to them. But there are very few such negative reviews.

In this article, we will debunk the myths, misunderstandings and misconceptions associated with transporting children on an airplane. Using the example of Russia's two largest airlines, we will give answers to the questions that passengers ask online.
Up to what age can I buy a child ticket?
A child ticket can be purchased for a child under 12 years old. In some cases, to purchase such a ticket you need to call the carrier’s call center.
If your child is between 0 and 2 years old, they are considered an infant. The ticket can be purchased either without providing a seat or by reserving an adjacent seat for a child.
Children from 2 to 12 years old can buy a ticket only with a separate seat.
To ensure that your child stays next to you during the flight, Aeroflot recommends informing about the transportation of a minor in advance to secure a seat.
If you are flying with two or more children under 2 years old, the transportation rules change slightly.
For the first baby, you buy a ticket without a separate seat, i.e. he will be held in his arms. The second and third child must take tickets with a separate seat for each.
Accordingly, the cost of tickets for children will differ.
In accordance with the Federal Aviation Rules (hereinafter referred to as FAR), which are mandatory for all Russian airlines, the age of the child is determined as of the date of transportation from the point of departure (Section VIII, paragraph 103).
Example:
You are flying with your child to Barcelona for a week. At the time of departure to Spain he was still 11 years old. He will celebrate his birthday in the capital of Catalonia. At the time of returning to Russia, the child is already 12 full years old.
In this case, you must purchase two separate tickets. Children's Moscow - Barcelona and adults Barcelona - Moscow.
If at the time of departure the child is already 12 years old, he belongs to the “adult” category. He needs to buy a ticket on a general basis.
Important!
Because at the age of 12, a person does not yet have a passport; when issuing a ticket on a website, for example, S7 Airlines, select the document type “Other” and enter the birth certificate number in the field.
Cost of a child's plane ticket
Depending on the age of the child, the plane ticket will cost free or with significant discounts.
- A ticket for a child under 2 years old without a separate seat is issued free of charge when flying within Russia. When flying abroad, the discount will be 90% of the fare.
- A ticket for a child under 2 years old with a separate seat will cost up to 50% discount. In the absence of special conditions for using the tariff.
- Other children under 2 years of age traveling with an adult passenger are transported at a discount of up to 50% of the fare.
- Children from 2 to 12 years old are also transported with a discount of up to 50%. (FAP, paragraph 106)
Please keep in mind that on long flights the airline may require you to purchase a ticket for your child and provide a separate seat.
If you need to change the departure date (reschedule the flight), the child's ticket is reissued in accordance with the child's age on the (new) departure date.
We emphasize:
Despite the fact that a child under 2 years of age is transported without a separate seat free of charge, a ticket for him is required. Those. You cannot buy a ticket just for yourself and come to registration with your child. In this case, the airline will refuse to transport you, because... transportation rules will be violated.
Baggage per child
Free baggage allowances for children may vary depending on the airline.
In most airlines, a child traveling without a separate seat is assigned 10 kg of free baggage.
When purchasing a ticket with a separate seat, the free baggage allowance corresponds to the fare.
For example, in Aeroflot, this is:
- Without providing a seat: 1 piece weighing up to 10 kg and measuring no more than 115 cm with the sum of three dimensions.
- When a seat is provided, depending on the class of service and fare rules.
In addition to the free baggage allowance, airlines allow you to carry a stroller or bassinet for free. The stroller must not be in its original packaging.
Carrycot on an airplane for a child
If you need a cradle to transport your child, we recommend that you call the airline in advance and check whether the cradle is provided or can be secured on the plane.
S7 Airlines does not provide bassinets for small passengers.
Aeroflot airlines have the option of placing bassinets in the cabin.
As a rule, devices for attaching the cradle are located in the first rows, which have a solid partition.
At Aeroflot, such seats on the plane are only in business class cabins.
Accompanying a child on an airplane without parents
In accordance with the FAR (clause 104), a child from 2 to 12 years old can fly without parents under the supervision of the carrier. If such a service is provided by the airline.
There are several nuances here that the passenger needs to know.
For the most part, airlines offer the service “Transportation under the supervision of the airline” to children from 5 to 16 years old.
Registration of such a service for children under 12 years of age is mandatory. From 12 to 16 years old - at the discretion of parents or legal representatives.
Because This service requires the personal presence of a legal representative and filling out documents; you can buy a ticket for a child accompanied by an airline representative only at the representative offices of the carrier or its agents.
Some airlines charge a fee for this service. Depending on the direction, at Aeroflot the cost of escort is from 40 euros.
Important!
An adult must come to the airport with the child and go to the check-in counter. Stay at the airport until the plane departs.
Please also note that each airline has its own requirements for this service.
At S7 Airlines, children can fly without adults only on direct flights and only on flights under the airline code.
Aeroflot can accompany children on connecting flights and flights with transfers. In this case, parents need to pay for the child’s meals. The cost of meals for a connection of up to 3 hours or more is indicated on the airline’s official website.
How the support works:
After checking in for the flight, an airline employee escorts the child on board the ship, where he hands him over to the flight attendant. Parents are informed by contact phone number that the child is on the plane.
All the child’s documents are placed in the tablet (document pocket). When handing over a child to an airline employee, this tablet is placed around the child’s neck and remains there for the entire flight.
Upon arrival at the final destination, the flight attendant hands the child over to an airport employee. He hands the child over to the person meeting him.
If the person who is supposed to meet the child is not there and it is not possible to contact him, parents will be notified about this. If the situation cannot be resolved on the spot, the child will be sent back to the point of departure accompanied by an airline representative.
The person meeting the child at the arrival airport must have a photo ID.
What documents does a child need?
- Flights
- Completed forms and applications with details of accompanying and welcoming persons (full name, address, telephone number)
- Receipt for payment for the service (if it is paid)
- Child's birth certificate
- Identity card of the accompanying person
- For international flights: passport, visa and other documents for the country of destination
- Power of attorney for the departure of a child.
Important information for those sending a child abroad!
Before travelling, check with the embassy or consulate of your host country about whether your child is traveling without parents.
Some countries have legal restrictions on the movement of unaccompanied minors.
Restrictions may apply to hotel accommodation in the event of a missed connection or flight delay.
The airline may refuse transportation to countries with legal restrictions on the basis of FAR, paragraph 107.

How to send a child alone on a plane? What documents are needed to fly children without adults? There comes a time when parents are faced with this question and choose airlines that offer a service for accompanying children on the plane.
At what age can a child fly alone?
Airlines have different conditions for flying an unaccompanied child. Typically, from the age of 12, a child buys an air ticket at full price, and he has the right to fly independently without adult accompaniment.
It is always necessary to indicate on the ticket that the child is flying unaccompanied.
Children from 5 to 12 years old are prohibited from flying unaccompanied by adults. Therefore, foreign airlines and Russian air carriers, “at the request of workers,” have long established a service for accompanying children on the plane. Some companies even provide it for free as a bonus, and some low-cost airlines, unfortunately, do not have it.
Transportation of unaccompanied children is an interesting term found on airline websites. It is there that you will learn that some airlines allow children to fly alone only from the age of 15, while others can organize accompanying children from 2 years old.
For approximate data from the rules for air travel for unaccompanied children from Aerofolt, see below >>
How to send a child alone on a plane?
Already at the stage of booking air tickets, you need to check with the carrier company: does the child require an accompaniment, does the air carrier have such a service, does it apply only to direct flights, or does it also apply to flights with transfers? Is it cost effective or is it worth changing airlines?
When flying children without parents, the ticket is paid without discounts at the adult fare. Additionally, if necessary (for children up to 18 years old), an accompanying service is paid for. The number of unaccompanied children on board the aircraft is limited (usually no more than 4 people), so it is better to arrange the service in advance at the time of purchasing the ticket.
What is included in the service of accompanying a child on an airplane?
If a child is flying alone, he can only be checked in for the flight directly at the airport terminal. An airport employee picks up the child, goes through all types of control with him and escorts him on board the plane. Until the aircraft takes off, the accompanying person usually needs to be present in the terminal building.
On the plane, the flight attendant will pay special attention to the person being accompanied. If the flight has a transfer, then at the connecting airport the young passenger is taken to a children's room or VIP room. Together with the child, without waiting in line, airline employees go through all the formalities (including receiving his luggage) and hand him over to the greeter at the arrival airport.
Airline regulations vary. The escort service may not be available on flights with transits and transfers. The age range for those accompanied may vary slightly. Some airlines take the child’s passport for the duration of the flight, others put all the documents in a special bag and hang it around the child’s neck. Be sure to check with the airlines for information.
In very rare cases, if there is no meeting person, air carriers can take the child to the desired address. In other cases, airlines contact the accompanying adults and send the child back.
Registration of the service: necessary documents
Parents (or other legal representatives of the child) can apply for the service upon presentation of their passport and child’s birth certificate.
The application for transportation, as well as the Application for the provision of services, are filled out and issued directly at the air ticket offices of the carrier company when purchasing a ticket.
In an Aeroport
Online registration is not available for unaccompanied minors. To register, you must arrive at the airport in advance and with a full package of necessary documents.
- birth certificate for flights within Russia (passport, visa, power of attorney from both parents and other documents for flights abroad),
- travel documents,
- completed application forms and applications with the names, addresses and telephone numbers of those who will meet and accompany the child,
- receipt for payment for support services,
- for the accompanying person - his identity document.
The person meeting the child at the airport of arrival must have an identification document with a photograph. The details of the person meeting you are verified with those indicated in the documents for accompanying the child.
To enter and exit another country, as well as transit, other documents may be required; before traveling, you must obtain information about them from the Consulate of the relevant state.
Aeroflot service for accompanying a child
Aeroflot provides an escort service for children aged 5 to 16 years. Moreover, the company’s staff will not only take care of the child going through all formalities at airports and will be responsible for him on the plane, but will also help the accompanied young passenger on a connecting flight.
