Bulgaria: feel at home!
Perhaps it is difficult to imagine a more welcoming and hospitable country than Bulgaria. Here they will always support the conversation, smile at the child, and tell you where to go. The almost complete absence of a language barrier helps you quickly establish contact and enjoy your vacation, discovering new facets of this amazing country day after day. By the way, Bulgaria suits any season: it is beautiful both on a July day, when the sea sparkles in the sun, and on a January morning, when the snow glistens on the peaks... All that remains is to find out which Bulgaria is right for you.
Climate
The main territory of Bulgaria has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. Closer to the Black Sea it becomes Mediterranean, so it is always warmer here. In summer, the seaside resorts of Bulgaria will delight you with sunny days and temperatures around 25-30°C. The swimming season begins in June and ends in September, the water temperature at this time is 22-28°C.
What the weather is like in Bulgaria in winter depends on the region. If at this time the coast is damp and there are frequent storms, then in the mountainous areas there is snow and many sunny days. Air temperatures from December to February in the mountains range from 0 to -10°C, although fluctuations in one direction or another are possible.
Beach
The main summer advantage of the country is its golden sandy beaches. At all resorts they are free and public, and you have to pay to rent sun loungers and umbrellas (with the exception of some hotels). The length of the beaches is 130 km, with a division into the northern coast (resorts Varna, Albena, Golden Sands, St. Constantine and Elena) and the hotter southern coast (Sunny Beach, Burgas, Sozopol, Nessebar).
Holidays with children in Bulgaria are ideal - there is a convenient shallow entrance to the sea almost everywhere. The large resorts of Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are suitable for both families and youth groups - there are plenty of opportunities for active pastime and nightlife. Those who are looking forward to a relaxing holiday in Bulgaria will certainly enjoy Sozopol, democratic Obzor, romantic Nessebar, cozy Tsarevo, as well as All Inclusive hotels in Albena.
Thanks to the unique mineral springs, the Black Sea resorts offer opportunities for balneological treatment. Wellness baths, relaxation treatments, mud therapy, SPA treatments await you in first-class hotels in Pomorie, Burgas, Golden Sands, and the resort of St. Constantine and Helena.
Ski slopes
Winter resorts in Bulgaria are suitable for family tourists and skiers with different levels of skiing, and affordable prices and the hospitality of local residents make them one of the best options for active recreation. The ski season lasts from early December to April.
There are three main skiing regions in the country - Borovets, Bansko, Pamporovo. Borovets is located at the highest peak in the Balkans, Musala, and its pistes (58 km) are located at an altitude of 1350-2560 m. This Bulgarian resort is distinguished by its attention to snowboarders: there is a snowboard park and 18 km of pistes for board skiing.
In Bansko, the total length of the slopes is 75 km, they are located at an altitude of 990-2600 m. Alpine skiing and snowboarding competitions are often held here, and this puts Bansko on a par with the best European resorts. Pamporovo, in turn, boasts a large number of sunny days. There are 37 km of slopes here, as well as the best fan park in Bulgaria, which is maintained at the state level.
Each resort offers skiing and snowboarding classes, and the ski school in Pamporovo is recognized as one of the best in Europe. Mineral springs near the resorts allow you to complement your winter holiday in Bulgaria with SPA treatments and wellness holidays and make it truly unforgettable.
Currency
Bulgarian Lev. If you are planning a holiday in Bulgaria, take euros with you - this currency is more convenient to exchange for levs. It is better to do this in banks, as exchange offices may charge additional commissions, so check the final amount in advance. There are ATMs at the resorts, and many establishments accept bank cards for payment. But you can’t do it without cash: you will need cash, for example, to leave a tip in a cafe (10% of the bill) or to thank the hotel staff for their services (1-2 leva).
The shops
Bulgarian resorts offer a traditional tourist assortment - accessories for a beach holiday, bright ceramic bowls and plates, local wine and Kashkaval cheese, as well as leather goods. Cosmetics based on rose oil are very popular - from handmade soaps to creams and oil perfumes. Also, jam is also made from the petals of the Bulgarian rose, and this delicacy can also be an excellent gift. Have free time: shops at resorts and large shopping centers are usually open from 9.00 to 22.00.
Kitchen
When you come to Bulgaria on vacation, you should try the famous Shopska salad with fresh vegetables and feta cheese, hot bean soup and cold “tarator” soup, layer cake “banitsa” with various fillings, meat stew “gyuvech”, dolma, stuffed peppers with rice, traditional raw smoked sausage and, of course, fermented milk products. Restaurants that serve Bulgarian cuisine in an authentic setting are called “mekhana”.
Among the popular alcoholic drinks in Bulgaria are different variations of rakia, liqueur with a refreshing taste “Menta Cave”, anise “mastic” and local wines. Among the sweets, Turkish delight, sweets made in Plovdiv, ice cream and frozen yogurt with local honey or jam are especially good.
Transport
In Bulgaria, you can get from one city to another by train or, cheaper, by bus. You can buy tickets at the bus station and on the bus itself. Timetables are usually available at stops. To avoid being scammed in a taxi, it is better to use official services (as a rule, they have yellow cars) and monitor the meter from the moment you board. There are also internal bus routes in major cities and resorts. The fare is 0.6-1 Bulgarian lev.
To rent a car, you need an international driving license. The driver must be over 21 years of age. Drunk driving carries serious penalties.
Resorts in Bulgaria:
Bansko
The picturesque town of Bansko is located at the foot of the Pirin mountain range. Everything here breathes peace and comfort: pretty stone houses, wrought-iron bars on the windows, cobblestone streets. And Bansko is the most prestigious ski resort not only in Bulgaria, but throughout Eastern Europe. The total length of the trails is 75 km.
Borovets
Borovets is the oldest and largest ski resort in Bulgaria. Here you will find everything you need for a winter holiday: a variety of trails, excellent service, exciting daytime and evening events. In Borovets, the night ski carnival “Torchlight Descent” is held every week.

Bulgaria is a small and cozy country offering excellent recreational opportunities. Its chic and famous resorts today attract tourists from all over the world, which is not surprising. Bulgaria offers budget holidays, which in terms of quality and level of organization are in no way inferior to holidays at more “famous” resorts in France, Spain, Italy, and Greece.
With a skillful approach to organizing leisure time during your vacation, your stay in Bulgaria can become very entertaining and exciting. After all, relaxation is not only a languid pastime on the beach and splashing in the sea or pool, but also a huge number of other types of entertainment! So, we bring to your attention the 10 best excursions in Bulgaria that will allow you to see all the beauty and local flavor of this country.
1. Try the best wines of Bulgaria
3. Take a walk through the historical areas of the country
4. Go on an excursion to the Alepu Nature Reserve and take a photo with a white-tailed eagle
Alepu is a nature reserve located near. This is truly a paradise not only for ornithologists, but also ordinary tourists who love to watch birds and admire the beauty of their plumage. In the northern and southern parts of Alepu Park there are lakes where many rare and endangered species of waterfowl live and nest.
On this excursion in Bulgaria you can see a mallard duck, a mute swan, a little grebe, a red heron, and the luckiest tourists can even meet a white-tailed eagle - a bird that is one of the 5 largest birds living in Europe. The wingspan of this beautiful bird reaches 2 meters, so it is not at all surprising that it is he who, from various angles, becomes the most important character in all photographs.
The Alepu Nature Reserve is separated from the sea by a sandy strip on which Once there was a wild beach, and today a tourist complex has been built.
5. Visit the Aladzha cave monastery and communicate with the spirit of a monk
Famous in Bulgaria and far beyond its borders, the Aladzha cave monastery, the height of a 10-story building, is located in a picturesque place - in the mountains, among the rocks. Translated from Turkish, “Aladzha” means “motley”; the monastery received this name thanks to the bright and colorful frescoes that decorated its walls. And although today only isolated fragments remain of the former grandeur of the frescoes, they also amaze with their brightness and beauty.
There is a belief that if you get lost in this monastery, you will certainly meet an old monk who likes to talk for a long time with visitors to the monastery, and then... simply disappears into thin air.
6. Visit a real natural mystery - a stone forest
This is a little-known but very interesting place that is definitely worth a visit. On an area of more than 50 km2, gigantic hollow stones are placed or scattered, and no one brought them here; they are of natural origin. The dimensions of some columns here reach a height of up to 10 meters.
Geologists are still trying to unravel and explain the mystery of its origin, offering a variety of hypotheses (more than 15 variations!). and while scientists are trying to explain the origin of the giant stones, tourists are happy to come here for new emotions and unusual photographs. They say that stones can give a surge of energy and vitality.
7. Take a walk through the Botanical Garden in Balchik
The main tourist “objects” of Balchik are considered to be the Queen’s summer residence and the Botanical Garden. And if the first object is not particularly impressive, like the home of a royal person, then a walk through the Botanical Garden can really give a lot of positive emotions and a good mood for a long time.
This park was laid out back in 1921, at the request of Mary of Edinburgh (Queen of Romania), who stayed at the Quiet Corner residence. The Queen turned to various botanical gardens around the world for help. Of course, many of them responded to the royal request, sending shrubs, trees and flowers from all corners of the globe.
Today this Botanical Garden is recognized as one of the largest in the Balkans, with more than 3,000 plant species growing and blooming there. Especially popular and loved by tourists are the rubber tree, sequoia, “sweet” and “paper” trees, and sand lily.
8. Visit the furthest point of Bulgaria and chat with dolphins
Since you have come to Bulgaria, do not miss the opportunity to visit the “edge of the country” - Cape Kalikara. You can come here by bus from Balchik and don’t forget to take a telescope or binoculars with you. After all, you will have a unique opportunity to watch birds listed in the Red Book - they live at the foot of the cliffs.
At the beginning of summer, dolphins love to swim here, and it’s a pleasure to watch them. This can be done while sitting on the cozy terrace of a local fish restaurant, which offers a gorgeous view of the sea and a quiet bay where friendly dolphins swim.
9. Admire the sea views and experience the medieval atmosphere in Sozopol
On postcards presenting Bulgaria, you can often see magnificent seascapes. Most of them were taken from the huge observation deck in Sozopol, where you can always meet many tourists and photographers.
It is also recommended to visit the central part of the city, where houses from the Bulgarian Renaissance are still preserved (about 200 wooden houses). They amaze with their beauty and originality; the Temple of Cyril and Methodius, as well as the mansion of Dimtris Laskaridis, who was a fish merchant, are especially popular among tourists. It is also worth looking at the remains of an ancient amphitheater and a real fortress wall.
