Chub in August on small rivers. Chub in August – camouflage comes first! What bait to use
When fishing for chub, spinning rods are usually used with a low lower test limit, since hunting for this fish almost always involves the use of light baits. The sensitivity of the rod also plays an important role: highly sensitive blank will allow you to both carry out the most effective placement of wobblers, spinners and other baits, and not miss a single, even the lightest, touch of a fish on them.
Also, when hunting for such a cautious fish as a chub (especially when fishing from the shore), it will not be superfluous to be able to perform long casts, why you should take a longer spinning rod.
Thus, the best rod for catching chub can be called the following: a fast action blank with a test of about 2 - 12 g, 2.4 m long for fishing from a boat and 2.7 m for shore fishing.
Coil
Since summer chub fishing primarily involves the use of small light baits (wobblers, flies, etc.), the best option would be small spinning reel(the most popular sizes are from 1000 to 2500).
If possible, you should choose "meat grinder", which Very good lays a thin braided line (reels with high-quality laying of thin lines are more expensive, but fishing with them will be as comfortable as possible).
Classic inertial reel or multiplier will not allow casting light chub baits.
Stories from our readers. Theme: fishing suit
Georgy V. Kaliningrad– “For me, fishing is half my life. For as long as I can remember – from the age of 5 with my father until now, I’ve always been fishing. And if finding a good spinning rod is not a problem now, then with fishing suits it’s a real hemorrhoid. I’ve probably tried about 10 of them . Including the popular version of the “slide” for fishing. There is nothing really good. It’s either cold or hot. There are few pockets, but the seams are torn. Half a year ago I ordered another one, a special fishing one. And lo and behold! I didn’t expect such good quality "I don't have any problems anymore - excellent fabric, it doesn't get wet, even in rain, even in hail, even in terrible frost. 11 pockets! I recommend it to everyone! See the link below, you'll like it!"
fishing line
The best line for catching chub will be thin and soft braid: its use will allow you to achieve maximum casting range for light baits and high sensitivity of the gear.
The specific thickness (and, accordingly, breaking load) of the cord is selected based on from the expected sizes of trophies and fishing conditions.
The thinner the braid, the better, but if there is a high probability of a large fish biting or there are many snags in the fishing areas, you will have to use a stronger line.
Leash
A metal leash is a very useful thing when fishing with spinning, but when hunting for a chub, put it categorically Not recommended: chub bites when fishing with a leash happen noticeably less often.
But putting a leash of thin and inconspicuous monofilament or fluorocarbon fishing line will not be superfluous: this can lead to an increase in catches.
Lure selection
Wobblers
Wobbler - perhaps the most catchy chub lure. They are especially effective when hunting for lobaty floating models, although it is worth having several sinking ones in the arsenal (their important advantage is the high casting range).
Usually in chub fishing, crank wobblers are used with a length no more than 5 cm.
Colors- natural (coloring under the fry), as well as dark matte.
HOW TO CHOOSE A FISHING SUIT?
- The main thing is the fabric and lining. To be warm in winter and not hot in summer. Well, if it is a polyester fabric with a through cellular structure, it removes moisture and allows the skin to breathe.
- presence of pockets. The more and the better they are located, the better.
- Shoulder straps and hood required. Great if the bottom is processed with a drawstring with a cord and latches
Spinners
The most popular (especially among amateurs) bait for catching chub. However, it should be noted that this type of bait is significantly inferior to wobblers in terms of catchability.
They are usually used turntables numbers 00, 0 and 1, dark colors or silver.
Front sights
The chub, as mentioned above, is large insect lover. Fly fishing (especially in June and July, when there is a massive flight of various insects) will be very successful.
For such fishing, you can use a spinning rod with a sbirulino (bombard) rig.
jig lures
Jigging is used during those periods when the chub is kept mainly at the bottom, hunting for fry (usually this happens in August).
For such fishing, vibrating tails and twisters with a length of no more than 5 cm, mounted on a hook connected through a winding ring to a “eared” sinker.
When and under what conditions do chub bite in summer?
Chub is one of those fish that are very sensitive to weather conditions.
This fish is affected pressure and precipitation. If stable reduced level atmospheric pressure, which corresponds to gray cloudy days, affects the chub bite favorably.
With frequent changes atmospheric pressure, the chub stops feeding. The biting also stops when sharp jump pressure.
The wind also plays an important role in catching this species.
slight wind a stable direction helps to improve the chub bite. If the wind direction during the day changes frequently, you shouldn’t count on a good catch.
It should also be noted that chub activity in northern winds is usually low.
It is also worth saying about air and water temperature.
The chub becomes inactive at low water and air temperatures(which occur in spring and autumn), as well as when it is too high, at the height of the July heat.
Optimal water temperature for it happens, as a rule, in June and August.
As for time intervals, then it is worth saying that in the first half of June The chub remains active throughout the daylight hours.
In the second half of June and July The best time to hunt for chub with a spinning rod is usually early morning and evening (morning and evening dawns), as well as night. In August The chub feeds most actively in the morning and evening dawns.
3 ways to increase your fish catch
There are many ways to increase your fish catch, but the most effective ones are. Below, the site editors share with you the 3 most effective ways to increase your catch:
- . This is a pheromone-based additive that activates receptors in fish. ATTENTION! Rybnadzor wants to ban this bait!
- Any other baits with flavorings are less effective; it is better if they contain pheromones. But it’s most effective to use new 2016 — !
- Learning different fishing techniques. For example, it is written about spinning wires.
Where to fish?
The chub prefers small rivers with fast or moderate current, with a rich ichthyofauna and an abundance of vegetation.
It is impossible to find it at all in lakes, reservoirs and other standing bodies of water.
perspective points for chub fishing:
- borders of grass thickets;
- deep holes (especially with snags or a tree lying at the bottom);
- boundary of direct and reverse flow;
- channel edges;
- sections of the river under steep banks, as well as under bushes and tree branches hanging over the water;
- sandy and rocky shallows.
Fishing technique
Postings
The best results when fishing for chub usually come from the simplest posting options:
- when fishing with wobblers- this is a uniform wiring, it is also worth considering that floating wobblers can be released downstream to the required distance (for example, leading them in this way under the branches of bushes hanging over the water), and only then start wiring;
- in fishing with spinners the main wiring will also be uniform;
- when fishing with flies it is mainly used to float the bait with the flow, it should also be carried out or played with the fly in another way;
- in jig fishing The main one will be stepped wiring.
Biting and hooking
Chub bites, especially if fishing is carried out in rapid waters, often occur very sharp and powerful. At the same time, the fish takes the bait, as a rule, not deep, but it often catches itself, although hooking still does not hurt.
If fishing is carried out at a depth in relatively calm water, the bite of a chub may be careful, and the spinning angler is not always able to notice it. It will help you not to miss a single touch of the fish on the bait. high-quality sensitive tackle. With any, even the slightest bite, you should immediately hook.
Fishing
Immediately after hooking, the chub, as a rule, makes several throws in different directions(usually downstream), trying to get free from the hook. These first throws are very powerful, but the chub is not enough for a long time: it gives up quite quickly. Its mouth is very strong, and its lips are fleshy, so the chub rarely breaks off.
When playing, you should try as hard as possible bring the fish to the surface faster and give her a breath of air: after that, the chub finally calms down and no longer offers any resistance.
Fishing from the shore and from the boat
Walking chub fishing from the shore- the most difficult, but very interesting way of hunting for chub with a spinning rod. The angler should keep quiet and try to be as invisible to the fish as possible, as well as make the most accurate casts.
Wading fishing, as a rule, allows you to achieve much better results when hunting with a spinning chub than fishing from the bank.
The fish is almost not afraid of a spinner standing knee-deep in water, moreover, the use wading boots or waders allows you to move quite freely around the pond.
alloy fishing- the best option for rivers with medium or slow flow. Throwing a spinning rod from a boat, freely floating downstream, you can catch all the interesting points that would be inaccessible with any other fishing method.
Fishing in early, mid and late summer
June. IN first half In June, the chub still behaves like spring: it continues to spawn and bites throughout the daylight hours. In the second half of June The chub, as a rule, is already in full swing hunting for insects, spending most of the time in the upper layers of the water.
The best time to catch chub is during mass flights of insects, of which there are several in June in most regions. Since the chub feeds mainly on insects at this time, spinning baits that imitate beetles and flies will work best. The best time for fishing- early morning, as well as evening and night.
July. At the height of the July heat, most fish species stop feeding altogether. The chub tolerates high temperatures quite well, but on the hottest days He often stops responding to bait.
In July, there is usually a massive emergence of moths; the chub actively feeds on them and therefore may not feed at all during the day.
August. In August, the chub bite increases compared to July. The fish gradually switches from summer to autumn feeding mode: when the summer of insects ends, the chub sinks to the bottom, an important place in its diet is now occupied by a variety of fry, minnows, bleak and other small fish.
Chub in August starts to move to the points where he will spend the whole winter - in deep holes and riverbeds.
Hunting for chub with a spinning rod is perhaps the most interesting option for catching this beautiful and strong fish. And it’s not without reason that the chub is one of the favorite trophies of many advanced spinning anglers: even if its gastronomic qualities are not high, but catching chub in the summer with a spinning rod is incredibly sporting and exciting.
In conclusion, a video on where, how and what to catch chub. Enjoy watching and have a great bite!
In early August, in my free minutes, I decided to repair my fishing gear: replace the leash on one spinning rod, and install a new wobbler on the other. My neighbor at the dacha, who regularly hunts for chub on the Volga, caught me doing this.
You know, I started gutting yesterday’s catch, and inside the chub was a whitebait,” an acquaintance shared after the greeting.
“It’s too early for a chub to be predatory,” I reacted to this news. - August has just begun. What did you use to catch it?
There was a grasshopper, but the bite was inactive,” the neighbor shared. - I see you’re getting ready for fishing?
The next day, having grabbed a dozen grasshoppers and a little grasshopper, I headed to my place. There were already a crowd of fishermen on the shore who had come fishing early in the morning to take the best spots. But we were not competitors: you need to catch chub in August only in hard-to-reach places. In my case, these were areas of water with a reverse current under the cables that attached the pier to the shore. Here you can only fish with float gear that can float with the current. Yes, and a certain skill is needed for accurate casting, because I left so many floats on these cables until I learned how to cast accurately.
First I tried it on chub. There are no fish exits. I hooked the fry and abandoned it. The tackle made a great swim, but there was no bite. Now a proven method is to catch chub with a grasshopper. On the second or third attempt, the cast was a success: after all, the line not only had to fly in a half-meter corridor above the water under the hanging cable, but also deliver the bait to the border of standing water and the reverse current. Then, after a while, the grasshopper attached to the hook will fall into the stream and swim quite naturally to the intended bite site.
So as not to scare the fish, I stood about fifteen to twenty meters from the expected bite site. All that remained was to carefully monitor the float: as soon as it accelerated its movement or plunged into the water, make a hook. On the first successful cast, the first chub was caught. Then the chub pecked almost through the cast. After five fish were caught, I had to walk up and down the stream, let the school of chub calm down and fearlessly return to the feeding place.
An hour and a half passed. The sky began to become covered with leaden clouds, and even a simpleton could understand that it was going to rain. In a word, it’s time to stop fishing. There were three freshly caught chubs in the bag, not counting the others - earlier ones. In general, there is no shame in giving such a catch.
Fishing today was a success, despite the peculiarities of chub fishing in August. Unlike my colleagues on the shore, I returned with a good catch, and I didn’t have to deal with the fish.
Experienced fishermen know that in the fall, catching chub with a spinning rod is a complex process, but very exciting.
Before going fishing for this predator for the first time, you should:
- find out the habitats of the chub;
- choose the right spinning rod;
- buy appropriate bait;
- study the tactics of fish behavior in order to catch it easier.
This is the only way to achieve a good catch in the autumn.
The chub is a fish from the carp family and is an inhabitant of freshwater reservoirs. The behavior of the bigheaded fish is different in different seasons, so fishing gear and tactics must be selected accordingly. And the most important thing is to choose a high-quality spinning rod for chub to achieve positive results.
Autumn is not the most popular period for chub hunting, since from the end of summer:
- preferences in the choice of food for this fish change;
- behavioral characteristics change.
On fine autumn days before the cold snaps, spinning fishing for chub with well-chosen baits is still quite possible.
There are several effective techniques on how you can catch a chub using a spinning rod:
- wade through the riffles. With this approach, the fish is not afraid and reacts well to the bait;
- running method, which is suitable for rivers with winding and complex banks.
The chub should be hooked very sharply and then immediately pulled out of its usual habitat.
Tactics for catching chub using a spinning rod
When using a spinning rod for chub when fishing, first study the tactics of catching it. The different preferences of chub depending on the time of year are presented in the table:
Let’s take a closer look at autumn chub fishing.
Autumn chub fishing
In the autumn, it is more difficult to catch chub using a spinning rod than in the summer. There are 2 main times for catching autumn chub using a spinning rod:
- September - early October;
- mid-October - before ice appears on reservoirs.
In September, the fish’s summer feeding is still active, so the chub responds well to bait. Spinning fishermen note the aggressive behavior of the bigheaded fish, which has a positive effect on the September catch.
In October and November, changes in the behavior of fish become more noticeable. The water in the rivers begins to cool, which leads to passivity of the chub. When going fishing with spinning rods in October you should:
- choose clear, windless days, since in cloudy, windy weather it is difficult to catch a big-headed fish;
- carefully select bait for different bodies of water. A sluggish and weak predator in the fall may not “reciprocate” even to the best wobblers and spinners.
What bait to use
Chub involves the use of a wide variety of baits:
- small silicone twisters;
- vibrotails;
- wobblers;
- microscrapers;
- rotating spoons.
Among fishermen there will be fans of any one type of bait. Many years of experience show that catching chub with a spinning rod brings the best results using wobblers. And you need to choose spinning rod models specifically for chub.
Catching chub with wobblers
The autumn chub continues to actively show itself on wobblers. In warm weather, you can continue to use crankbaits with active play. But you should choose larger sizes. If you use cranks, as in the summer, then small individuals will be caught on the hook more often. It’s better to take 40mm ones to catch larger chubs.
Autumn fishing for bass can be complicated due to incorrectly selected bait. Its color matters. To begin with, it is recommended to use rolls that have natural, natural shades. Dark colors are also suitable.
Minnow wobblers perform well with the onset of October cold weather. Even by playing on the most sluggish retrieve, there is an opportunity to stir up the big-headed fish, which no longer wants to actively move behind the cranks. Fishermen often use deep-diving wobblers.
What to use to catch chub in November
November is not the best period for chub fishing. The lobasy becomes as passive and unpredictable as possible, as the water in reservoirs quickly cools. In the central part of Russia, the ice crust is growing faster than in the southern regions. Therefore, the fishermen of the center will most likely not be pleased with a good catch.
However, the use of a modern, high-quality wobbler in natural colors has a positive effect on the catch. You can try spinning jig baits to catch fish.
It is impossible to recommend a specific brand or model of bait. They are selected directly at the fishing site due to the changeable November weather and the type of reservoir. It is not guaranteed that the bait taken for fishing that day will bring a good catch.
Feeders for catching chub in autumn
Feeders for catching chub are divided into open and closed. The open feeder is a spring on a lead rod. At the same time, it can slide along the fishing line, or be motionless. If you need to deliver bait instantly to a fast current, then it is better to use large frame feeders.
In fishing stores there is a special ready-made bait for chub. But if there is no suitable option, then you can buy mixtures for roach or bream.
Closed feeders look like a pencil box with holes in it. Food is placed inside, mainly from live ingredients:
- bloodworm;
- maggot.
The weight for the feeders is selected according to:
- with the speed of the current where fishing occurs;
- with the casting range of the feeder.
Places to catch chub using a spinning rod
The chub is a very cautious and timid fish. Not all bodies of water allow you to catch it easily. Frequent habitats of the forehead:
- ponds with stones, various rubble and bushes;
- shady places in the summer, where many other representatives of aquatic fauna teem;
- changes in depth, as well as a change from a fast current to a calm one, and vice versa;
- riffles and barriers, like dams and dams.
Pike perch also choose a similar habitat - just like the chub, they choose places where they can hunt and hide.
Tackle for chub fishing
Successful chub fishing is a consequence of choosing the right fishing rod. Which spinning rod to choose for this fish depends on the behavioral characteristics of the fish.
Light tackle performs well on reservoirs. But classic and ultralight are not popular options for catching chub, since they do not allow for long casting like light. And when catching a chub, this is important, because timid individuals do not allow strangers, spinners, to get close to them. Wobblers and spinners should also fit perfectly into the gear.
The spinning rod must match the nature of the lobster’s habitat in order to be guaranteed to catch it.
It happens that you buy an expensive, “sophisticated” spinning rod to catch chub, but you won’t catch a single one. But take another one, and everything will change. Let's consider these options:
Coil
For chub fishing, a reel in which the line is laid efficiently and evenly is important. When catching a big-headed fish, only the inertia-free version of the fishing line is used. Experienced fishermen prefer expensive reels to guarantee both enjoyable fishing and a large catch. And numbered reels are used for maximum comfort.
It is necessary to take into account the safety margin if a large fish is caught on the hook, as well as for the very first contact of the chub with the bait. A friction clutch that can be fine-tuned would also be useful.
Cord or fishing line
The cord and fishing line are suitable for spinning fishing, but with minor nuances and subtleties.
Hook for catching chub in autumn
The hook for catching chub must be super-sharp, since it is possible that the reservoir will have a rocky bottom. The following hook indicators are also important:
- thickness;
- bend and shape;
- wire elasticity;
- forearm length;
- characteristics of the nozzle (for plants - thicker, for animals - thinner).
And the correct sharpening of the hook will not allow the fish to tear its lip.
One of the most interesting fishing objects for anglers is the chub. Recently, chub is most often purposefully caught by fly fishing or spinning using spinners, wobblers and jig baits, although catching chub with a float rod can be no less productive and exciting.
About the chub
The chub or, scientifically, Squalius cephalus is a large fish of the carp family. In the literature there are references to giants weighing up to two pounds, but the existence of such chubs was already in doubt during the time of Sabaneev. Today, a chub weighing more than two kilograms can well be considered a trophy, and its maximum weight reaches 5–6 kg. This strong and beautiful fish is most common in small and medium-sized rivers and is practically never found in reservoirs with stagnant water.
Chub is a large fish of the carp family.
Chub spawning
One of the characteristics of the chub is that, unlike most fish, it continues to bite during spawning. Chub begin to spawn when they reach three years of age and weigh 150–200 g. Spawning takes place when the water warms up to 12–15 °C, i.e. from April to June, depending on the region. A sign of the beginning of spawning can be the flowering of bird cherry. Chub spawn in the current, in places with a rocky or gristly bottom.
Where to look for chub
In small and medium-sized rivers, the favorite habitats of the chub are:
- riffles;
- holes near steep banks;
- tree crowns hanging over the water;
- large snags and boulders.
In large rivers and reservoirs, chub stay near holes leading to shallows and near large submerged objects. The chub also gravitates towards artificial structures - bridge piles, dams, piers.
There is no point in looking for chub in places with a muddy bottom, as well as in creeks and bays overgrown with algae.
Contrary to the fisherman's expectations, the chub often stands in the current not behind an obstacle, but right in front of it, collecting food that the water brings.
In large rivers and reservoirs, the chub stays near the pits
What do you use to catch chub?
Considering the omnivorous nature of the chub, you can catch it with almost any equipment: a float rod, spinning rod, bottom tackle and fly fishing. At the same time, the choice of baits and artificial baits is simply huge.
Nozzles can be:
- bread;
- corn;
- peas;
- steamed grains of wheat or pearl barley;
- chicken liver and other entrails;
- pieces of lard, meat, sausage or frankfurters;
- whole cherries and mulberries.
The following are used as bait:
- worm - earthworm or crawling;
- live bait - preferably with a narrow body (bleak, minnow or minnow);
- frog;
- leech;
- various insects during their emergence (especially the May beetle and grasshoppers).
Worm for bait
Many traditional baits for catching chub are no longer used due to their low availability:
- crayfish meat;
- blood clots;
- lamprey larva.
When and where is the chub caught on a regular bait
Fishing for chub with a float rod can be carried out throughout the open water season. In early spring, immediately after the ice melts and before the water becomes cloudy, the chub emerges from its wintering pits and begins to feed in preparation for spawning. At this time, he is caught in the wiring in the lower layers of the water.
As the water bodies warm up, the chub gradually moves to shallows and riffles, while its taste preferences change. The warmer the water, the more the chub is located to plant baits.
In the summer, after insects begin to emerge, the best bait for catching chub on a float are beetles, grasshoppers, and dragonflies. It is better to catch them in the upper layers of the water or on its surface. At this time, camouflage is especially important - if a chub notices an angler, you don’t have to wait for a bite.
In the fall, the colder the water, the easier it is to catch a chub using live bait or bait of animal origin. In late autumn, the activity of chub decreases, but its fishing can continue until freeze-up. At the same time, the closer the winter, the less often the chub appears in shallow water.
Catching a chub with a float rod
The chub feeds both during the day and at night. However, in summer the best bite occurs in the morning and evening dawns, and in spring and autumn - after 10–11 o’clock, when the water warms up a little. At night, the largest specimens usually peck.
Float tackle for chub
Rod and reel
To catch chub on a float, you can use both fly rods and fishing rods with running equipment. The choice is determined by the fishing conditions, but a fishing rod equipped with a reel has more options. It is better to use a carbon fiber rod, because it is held in your hands, and you have to cast the rod quite often. The most versatile rod length is 5-6 meters.
Handsome, fighter, masterpiece of nature - these epithets are often awarded to the chub, a fish so named for its large head. This omnivorous representative of the carp family is a desirable trophy for any angler, because catching and landing a large chub always adds a fair amount of adrenaline to the blood. In this review, we will tell you how to catch chub at different times of the open water season: from April to October, and we will also mention winter fishing for the handsome river fish. We will describe his favorite habitats and fishing methods, and tell you about the baits and lures on which he bites best.
Features of behavior
This handsome silver fish with a slab-like strong body prefers to stay with the current, so it is a typical river inhabitant; sometimes it enters flowing lakes, but this is very rare. But river riffles and turns with fast currents are his element.
Moreover, it is found in large and small rivers, as well as in very small streams.
In reservoirs, chub prefers to stay close to inflowing rivers and streams.
In rivers, the chub likes to stay near the banks with overhanging bushes or trees, under which it collects fallen insects, for example, dragonflies or the same cherry berries. Also, the favorite habitats of the silver beauty are rapids and rifts, steep banks. He does not like to stand on the muddy bottom, in places with dying algae.
The large mouth of this fish indicates its predatory preferences, although in fact the chub can be called a semi-predatory fish, because in addition to small fish, its diet includes insects: dragonflies, grasshoppers, as well as worms, crayfish and plant foods. Many people have probably heard that in the summer, catching chub with a grasshopper, cherry or corn can be very successful.
In addition, starting from June, the chub feeds on mud and algae that grow on underwater snags, and strong pharyngeal teeth allow it to grind the shells of crayfish or snail shells. Therefore, catching chub with crayfish also often brings success.
Closer to autumn, the chub switches to increased nutrition; the main dish in its diet is the fry of narrow-bodied fish: verkhovka or gudgeon. And with the onset of the winter season, it slides into holes and hardly feeds, becoming more active only on the last ice. However, there are rivers in which you can successfully catch chub even in winter while ice fishing.
Chub spawning coincides with the flowering of bird cherry, and it begins in April or May, depending on the region of the country. The peculiarity of the chub spawn is that, unlike most fish, it does not stop feeding. Therefore, chub spawning is not an obstacle to its biting. But all the same, the chub’s zhor comes, like other fish species, a week after spawning, in May-June.
It is necessary to say about one more feature of chub fishing.
This fish is very careful; it can notice a person on the shore from a great distance and hide in a secluded place in its river, so you need to carefully camouflage yourself.
For example, in sunny weather you should not approach the place where you will catch chub so that a shadow falls on the water.
What to catch?
The omnivorous nature of our handsome fish was noted by Sabaneev’s contemporaries, so when choosing what to catch a chub with, on the one hand you will have to rack your brains, on the other hand you can catch it with whatever you want. We list all the possible options for lures that are equipped with hooks for chub fishing.
- crayfish and crayfish meat;
- frogs;
- fry of carp fish;
- worms: dung, earth and creeps;
- insects: dragonflies, grasshoppers, locusts, May and Colorado beetles;
- flies;
- butterflies;
- leeches;
- shellfish;
- maggots;
- salo;
- sausages;
- cow or pork liver, and the chub likes liver both raw and boiled;
- chicken intestines;
- fish cutting;
- fish eye.
- corn;
- bread: especially bread crusts set adrift;
- dough;
- berries of cherries, currants or gooseberries;
- processed cheese;
- steamed grain;
- peas;
- boiled potatoes.
In addition to natural baits used when chub is being caught on a feeder or float rod, a handsome strong man is caught on artificial fly fishing or spinning lures.
What to catch?
The baits described in the previous part largely determine the way chub is caught. In addition, the choice of equipment is determined by the personal preferences of the angler, as well as the intended places on small or large rivers where fishing will take place.
Tackle for catching chub is very diverse, here are their main types:
- Float fishing rod.
- Feeder rod.
- Tightening with a bale.
- Poludonka.
- Live bait fishing rod.
- Winter fishing rod.
- Spinning.
- Fly fishing tackle.
Catching the line
For the chub, lure fishing is one of the most popular methods of catching this beautiful fish. The equipment includes a Bolognese float rod, a wire reel and a laden float, rafted with the flow.
Worms, maggots, corn, bread, liver or other bait or bait are put on the hook of such gear. The principle of seasonal fishing is observed here.
Chub fishing in the spring is successful with a worm or cutting fish, liver or fry. Starting from May, when the mass emergence of insects begins, fish are caught using the May or Colorado potato beetle, after removing the hard wing covers, and other insects.
Fishing for chub in the summer allows you to use bread crust, corn, cherries, and processed cheese on the hook.
Catching chub in October before the freeze-up with a wire rod is more successful if the hook is equipped with a worm or bloodworm.
Retrieving fishing techniques vary. You can fish by floating the gear past the angler or by letting the gear drift with the flow, in this case we recommend using chub bait.
Feeder tackle
Fishing for chub on a feeder is used on medium and large rivers, when long-distance casting and baiting of the fishing spot are required. The bait used for chub is the same as for any other carp fish. It is imperative to include in its composition what will be put on the hook: bread, corn, crushed cherries, and so on.
Chub fishing in the spring, especially in early or late autumn, is carried out with bait using simple soil with the addition of an animal component, which will better collect the fish that are eaten off by winter.
Retightening with a bale
An interesting way of catching chub is by pulling with a bale. The secret of this gear is simple. Two fishermen on opposite banks of the river tie the lines of fishing rods equipped with reels. Long leashes with hooks are tied to the main line. Insects are planted on hooks. This gear is particularly successful in catching insects in May or June during the summer. This method is also used at a later time. Even in early autumn, the fish bite on the pull and you can catch a good specimen of not only chub, but also asp.
The fishing technique is quite interesting, here are its main secrets:
- Two fishermen take positions on opposite banks of a chub fishing spot on the river.
- The fishermen lift their rods up and stretch the line.
- Slowly lowering the rods down, they try to touch the surface of the water with hooks baited with insects.
- The fish, noticing splashing insects, actively peck.
- One of the anglers, noticing a bite, makes a cut.
- The second fisherman releases the reel brake, and his partner at this time catches the fish.
Poludonka
The peculiarity of catching chub on a half-bottom is that this fishing takes place on the move in a strong current. Although the tackle is a float, the float is not in the water, but is tied just below the tip of the rod. The secret is that in a turbulent current you cannot hold a simple float in place, and the feeder tackle does not provide sensitivity under such conditions.
You can place several of these donks along the shore in likely fish habitats, the maximum is four, otherwise you won’t be able to keep track of them all. Hooks are equipped with a worm or maggot. Half-bottom fishing is best in early spring, at the end of April - beginning of May, when the river banks are not yet overgrown with tall grass and are clearly visible from afar.
Live bait fishing rod
The chub also bites well on live bait, and already in early May after spawning it can be caught on a minnow or a verkhovka. And from the end of May, when the tadpoles hatch into frogs, the chub bites well on the frog.
For this fishing, live bait tackle is used. According to the installation of the equipment, the live bait fishing rod resembles the Bologna one, only the float is set so that it can keep the live bait afloat, and the sinker is sliding so that the predatory fish does not feel excessive resistance.
There are no special secrets in the technique of catching chub on live bait. We bait the fish and send it along the river, trying to “walk” it along the previously designated places. Just be careful, other types of predatory fish can covet such a treat: a perch, and a toothy pike can not only peck, but also cut off your equipment.
Both spring fishing and fishing in the summer are successful on live bait. But chub bite especially well on live bait in November, before freeze-up.
Winter fishing
Winter chub fishing is rarely directed at this particular predator, it is mainly caught as by-catch on roach or perch. But its winter bite is also amazing: a strong jerk and powerful resistance.
Spinning
Spinning fishing for chub is possible at any time of the open water season. But if spring and autumn fishing is carried out mainly on spinners and minnow wobblers, then in July and August the chub prefers more voluminous surface lures.
Fly fishing
We can talk endlessly about fly fishing for chub, but we can briefly dwell on this principle. What kind of insects over the river are more numerous at certain times of the year, such an imitation fly should be hooked on a leash.
Catching lenok, a Siberian salmon representative
Lenok belongs to the salmon family and is represented by only one species, which has two distinct forms - sharp-nosed and blunt-nosed. Lenok fishing is successful in the rivers and mountain lakes of Siberia, the Far East, China, West Korea and Mongolia; lenok is not found west of the Urals.
The body of the lenok is elongated, covered with medium-sized scales, its mouth is small, equipped with small and strong teeth; in appearance it is quite similar to a whitefish. The color of its body depends on the living conditions and is represented by a fairly wide range of colors. Lenok, which lives in quiet river waters, has a golden color, many dark spots on its sides, and its fins have a dark crimson tint. Lenok, which lives in deep river reaches and taiga lakes, is darker in color with a black back and white belly; on the rifts it is silver in color with a dark gray back, fins and tail feathers with a yellowish tint; it is also inferior in size to its deep-sea relative. All lenkas have faint reddish spots on the sides and well-developed fins edged with a pearlescent stripe. Catching lenok will bring a trophy weighing on average 2-3 kg, although you can catch individuals weighing 5-6 kg or more. The big disadvantage of lenka is that it grows slowly. Lenka spawning begins after the opening of rivers and lakes with a water temperature of 3-6 °. To spawn, the lenok climbs into the upper reaches of rivers and streams, where it then remains in place for some time and fattens up. At this time, its color becomes brighter and more contrasting.
Catching lenka habitat habits
Lenok is a schooling fish, but large individuals prefer to stay alone. In Siberia, lenok fishing in open water occurs until late autumn, sometimes before freeze-up. In Transbaikalia, already at the end of May, you can catch medium-sized lenok; the active bite begins in June, but weakens in July.
When the heat comes, the lenok goes to the rifts or to mountain rivers with cold spring water, where during the daytime it hides in hollows under the shore, underwater rocks, or uses other shelters. In general, he behaves very carefully at this time. It goes hunting at night, and the most active biting occurs at dawn.
In mid-August, the lenok bite intensifies, especially after rains, when the water level in mountain rivers rises significantly, and it returns back to larger rivers. Closer to leaf fall, lenok fishing occurs both on the rifts and at depth. Before freeze-up, flocks of lenoks go deep into holes.
Lenok's diet consists of small fish (young minnow, chebak, gudgeon, perch), as well as insect larvae, earthworms, small mollusks, amphipods, grasshoppers and dragonflies. Large individuals are not averse to eating frogs and mice. The lenok feeds throughout the day, but is most active in the morning at dawn and in the evening before sunset. At night, lenok quite often comes to the shore in shallow waters to hunt. The lenok does not need bait, but adding bloodworms won’t hurt.
Catching lenok with a spinning rod
This method is most suitable for fishing a predator. Also, fishing for lenok can bring an unexpected trophy in the form of taimen, so you should choose gear with a fair margin of safety. The rod is taken with a length of 2.5-2.7 meters with a test of 10-30 g, since a long rod is better to control the bait, there is less effort to circle and throw an obstacle, it absorbs better when fishing, so the fish gets more tired trying to free itself, The load on the line and reel is also reduced. The only drawback is the inconvenience when moving from place to place, since sometimes you have to wade through dense thickets. The reel is taken to be an inertia-free reel with a spool size of 3000 or an inertial one, a monk fishing line with a thickness of 0.4-0.6 mm or a braided line with a breaking load of 10 kg. They fish mainly with spinners; in places with great depths they use not large oscillating spinners, 5-6 cm in length, but rotating spinners on the rifts; it is desirable that the spinners are shaped like a small fish. On a sunny day in clear water, the bait should be dark or matte in color, in muddy water at dusk it should be shiny.
In summer, lenka should be looked for near flooded trees, near snags and boulders. The spoon is thrown onto the main stream and led downstream,
skirting the possible habitat of the lenok. The wiring is carried out evenly, sometimes it is worth twitching towards yourself, which will have a positive effect on the frequency of bites. The depth of the fishing depends on the time of year; in spring and autumn, the lenok often takes from the bottom.
Wade fishing
Catching lenok by wade is exciting and allows you to get even closer to nature. For this fishing method, you can use a light long rod 4-5 m and a line 0.2-0.25 mm, a line 1.5-2 m longer than the size of the rod, hooks No. 6-7. To make casting easier, a small pellet is attached above the hook. Live flies such as stoneflies, grasshoppers or artificial flies, preferably wet ones, are used as bait. The flies should resemble insects living near a pond. Many anglers knit them themselves from woolen threads, preferably the color is brown, yellow, gray or red. Catching lenok using this method is good in the evening before sunset, in warm, calm or light wind weather, when lenok rises to the surface to hunt for insects.
Catching lenok with a hook
Fishing with bait requires the least amount of money outlay. The tackle consists of a 0.3 mm fishing line when using a simple rod 2.5-3 m long or a 0.5 mm fishing line if casting is done manually. 3-4 leashes are attached to the fishing line, with a fishing hook No. 6-7 and a load of 50-70 grams. The rods are secured among stones or in any other way. In the absence of a fishing rod, a reel board with a wooden peg is used, which is also secured among stones or in another accessible way. After casting, the line is secured to a wooden peg. A bell can serve as a signaling device. Catching lenok with a bait begins at dawn, while the lenok is standing near the shore and stops at 7-8 o’clock in the morning, when it goes deeper into the pits. The lenok takes the bait that lies at the bottom without any fear, sometimes swallowing it so that it is difficult to get the hook. The bait used is a worm, small clam or live bait. When using live bait as bait, the ridge is pierced with a hook below the dorsal fin. Casts with live bait can be left unattended overnight, since with this method of fishing the lenok often hooks itself.
Fishing with the mouse
With the onset of the first morning frost, an artificial mouse can be used as bait, especially on a quiet night during a full moon. This is quite an exotic lenka fishing. It is made from a round rubber gasket, which is used for thermal insulation of the joints of wall panels.
A small bear blank is cut out of the gasket, which is first processed with a knife and then with a semicircular
having a large notch. Before processing, a hole 1.5-2 mm in diameter is burned in the center of the workpiece, into which a stainless wire rod is pulled. The finished mouse is equipped with a tee No. 10-12. To avoid sagging of the anchor when wiring, a piece of nipple elastic 5-6 cm long is attached to it with black threads using waterproof glue or nail polish; this helps to support the tee horizontally and creates the effect of a mouse tail. A mustache made of thin black or orange feathers is attached to the opposite side of the tail. This mouse does not need to be filled with wax, lead added to it or lined with fur. It casts perfectly over a distance of 30-40 m.
Successful catching of lenok is impossible without the use of a landing net, which allows you to avoid unexpected loss of the trophy.
How to catch an asp in spring and summer
The asp is a large freshwater predatory fish, and it is of particular interest to fishermen. Sheresper is a cautious and timid predator, so it is not easy to outwit him. It is all the more pleasant and honorable to feel the struggle of this strong fish caught on the hook. Spring and summer asp fishing has several nuances that the angler should be aware of.
Catching asp using a spinning rod
Immediately after the ice melts, you can go hunting for a river corsair. At this time, the fish are in deep holes. The asp is preparing for the mating season, preferring to stay in the depths. It is during this pre-spawning period that the fish come close to the steep banks. The sheresper bite is observed at a distance of 10-50 m from the coastline, which is much closer than in summer.
Spinning equipment
Spring hunting for asp requires balanced gear, both in sensitivity and reliability.
The parameters of the rod look simple: length - 3 m or more, casting - 50-70 g. The spinning rod is equipped with a spinning reel. The size of the model is not so important; the line should be wound to the edges of the spool, which will allow you to cast the bait far. Since the sheresper does not have teeth in its mouth that could damage the fishing line, it is possible to wind a monofilament line (0.2-0.25 mm) or a braided cord with a breaking force of up to 5 kg.
Lures and rigs
In different asp fishing conditions, baits that are completely different from each other may be of interest.
One of the top artificial baits for catching river corsair is the castmaster. Thanks to its mass and streamlined shape, the bait is a leader in casting range. Castmasters weighing more than 30 g are most often used. Devons show good results in targeted hunting for trophy fish. The bait has two important advantages: it flies far and creates powerful vibrations during retrieval. A mandatory element in equipping a spinning rod when using Devons will be a swivel. It will prevent the line from twisting during fishing. In skillful hands, ordinary spoons become effective baits. The weight of spinners ranges from 20-50 g. Jig baits allow you to seduce predators in deep holes. Combinations of rubber and metal spinners will be even more attractive for asps. You can also catch a sheresper using a wobbler. In spring, deep-sea models are required, and when fishing, it is recommended that the fisherman occasionally strike the bait along the bottom. The bombard has become an effective equipment for catching asp. It is a large float that allows you to cast the lightest and smallest baits far.
Surface fishing for sheresper
As soon as the first insects appear on the rivers, the fish begin to rise to the surface, grabbing fallen flies, dragonflies, and beetles. At this time, good fishing is possible using surface gear.
The traditional tackle for surface fishing for natural and artificial insects is the “boat”. In different regions, the tackle has names such as “kite”, “sleigh”, etc. The principle of operation of the “boat” is that under the influence of the force of the current, the tackle can move away from the shore when the fishing line is pulled. In this way, you can set up equipment with hooks on leashes far from the shore, where the fish feel safe. In addition to asp, this tackle also catches fish species such as chub, ide, saberfish, dace, and rudd. The gear consists of a short hard spinning rod, an inertial reel, monofilament 0.3-0.5 mm thick and several leashes of different lengths. You can also catch an asp using a regular float rod for line fishing. Only for surface fishing it is necessary to slightly modify the gear. The float is tied to the end of the main fishing line, and the hook with a leash is mounted 0.5-1 m above the float. Thanks to this scheme, it is possible to cast far enough and control the drift of the bait downstream. In addition to natural insects, artificial flies, streamers and wabiki can be used to catch sherespers.
Using live bait
Since the asp is a predatory fish, you can effectively hunt for trophy prey using live bait. The best types of small fish are considered to be bleak, verkhovka, and dace.
To fish with live bait, you should use one of the following gear:
- “live bait” (float rod);
- donka;
- bombard;
- spinning.
Best fishing spots
The asp's camping and hunting locations depend on the time of year.
Before spawning, it is necessary to fish deep edges, holes and pools. After the mating season, the fish are caught on stretches of 2-6 m. The best spots are the riffles near the streams. Favorite places for feeding both in spring and summer are areas where a tributary flows into a deep mainstream, as well as places with fresh water inflow. Sheresper also comes out on the shallows, where there are gyres and currents.
Features of summer fishing for river corsair
In the summer, there are two main ways to catch asp.
Fishing in shallow water occurs after spawning, here the predator catches juvenile fish. You can attract the attention of a sheresper with a light turntable with wiring near the surface. Fans of live bait fishing, as well as fans of surface flies, have high chances of catching asp.
In July and August you can watch the asp hunting in a flock. During the zhora of a predator, real boiling boilers are formed, which are the result of fry jumping out of the water. The asp hits the surface of the water, trying to stun the little things for a while. The predator then collects the paralyzed prey. When fishing in a cauldron, it is important to keep a distance and not to approach the cauldron closer than 70-80 m. Otherwise, the asp can be scared away, and the fight will stop.
Subtleties of camouflage
The extreme caution of the asp requires skillful camouflage from the fisherman. Even if fishing takes place using a boat, it is unlikely that it will be possible to get closer than 70-80 m to a feeding predator.
The basic requirements for clothing are camouflage colors. The material from which the trousers and jacket are made should not make sounds at the slightest movement of the angler. Even during spawning, when the fish loses some caution, one should remember the elementary rules of disguise.
You can catch an asp in both spring and summer. It is important to correctly determine the places of parking and feeding of fish in a specific period, choose the tackle to your liking and accurately feed the bait. A hungry predator will certainly grab it if the angler does not give himself away either by gestures, or sounds, or bright equipment.
