In the early 2000s, things were not going well for the company: hotels began to make losses, and it was possible to stay afloat solely due to the gambling business. In 2007, the Blackstone Group, one of the largest private equity firm buyouts, acquired Hilton Hotels Corp. for $26 billion and assumed its debt, and Christopher Nassetta was named President and CEO of Hilton Worldwide.
Despite the challenges, the company's brands today span more than 3,900 hotels and 650,000 rooms in ninety countries, including Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, DoubleTree by Hilton, Embassy Suites Hotels , Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Hotels, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Home2 Suites by Hilton and Hilton Grand Vacations. Outside the US, Hilton Worldwide is actively developing six brands. They can be divided into four categories: economy sector - Hampton by Hilton; mid-price sector - Hilton Garden Inn; the upscale sector, featuring DoubleTree by Hilton and Hilton Hotels and Resorts; and the luxury sector, featuring Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts and Conrad Hotels & Resorts.
