For its landscapes and artistic culture, Tuscany is considered the most beautiful region in Italy. The sea coast and mountains, rivers and lakes, valleys and hills surprise with their variety and rapid change of landscapes. Vineyards, olive groves and oaks grow in the Chianti hills. Also, the Tuscan landscapes are remarkable for the rows of cypresses, enchanting and elegant. The coastline of the Maremma is rich in lagoons and natural parks. On the territory of the Tuscany region there are two national parks and 120 nature reserves, as well as three regional natural parks.
Tuscany is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and its artistic heritage includes architecture, painting and sculpture, with many works in museums throughout the region, of which the most famous are the Uffizi and the Bargello Museum in Florence. Tuscany was the birthplace of Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Dante Alighieri (Father of the Italian language).
Tuscany is known for its wines (of which the most famous are Chianti, Morellino Di Scansano and Brunello Di Montalcino). It is the second largest wine-producing area in Italy. Wine production per year is about 5 million hectoliters.
About 3 millennia ago Tuscany was inhabited by the Etruscans with their developed winemaking system. It was they who began to cultivate the traditional Tuscan grape varieties - Sangiovese (red) and Trebbiano (white). In 1716, the Grand Duke of Tuscany identified wine production areas in the region, which served as an impetus for the development of winemaking.
It should be noted that the Sangiovese variety reaches its peak only on poor soils, moreover, at an altitude of 250-300 meters above sea level. Only 4 regions in Tuscany have similar conditions with poor stony soils - Chianti Classico, Montalcino, Montepulciano and Chianti Rufina, and it is from here that the best wines of Tuscany come. In the early 1980s, varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Black and Syrah began to be grown in Tuscany, from which surprisingly good wines were obtained.

As entertainment, Tirrenia can offer bars, restaurants, pizzerias, pubs, dance clubs, discos, billiard rooms, bowling (in Marina di Pisa, 3 km from Tirrenia), nightclubs, an agency with a sweepstakes and live broadcast of races: gallop and strollers .
For children and adults there is an amusement park, a park with bike paths, a children's park, more than 30 private and 2 communal beaches.
From Marina di Pisa there is a boat to the nearest islands (1.5 hours one way, round trip ticket for an adult $20). There you will have a great day swimming in amazingly clear waters and sunbathing on secluded small beaches.
The combination of sea, hills and mountains make Cinquale one of the most popular resorts on the Tuscan coast.
In Cinquale, as elsewhere on the Tuscan coast, you can go diving, sailing, ride scooters, bikes and horses. There is also an flying club nearby, using the services of which you can not only admire the Tuscan coast from a bird's eye view, but also take flying lessons.
Interesting to visit Villa Schiff, which contains a large collection of cultural treasures and Aghinolfi Castle - one of the oldest ancient castles in Italy (the first mention of it dates back to 753), which has never been destroyed. The castle has recently been restored in order to bring back the unique splendor of ancient times. From here it is also easy to get to Lucca and Carrara with its marble developments and the Museum of the Stones.
Saturnia(Saturnia) is a balneological resort in the center of Tuscany, located on sulfur springs, 170 km from Rome and 200 km from Florence and 450 km from Milan and 150 km from Fiumicino International Airport (Rome). According to an old legend, these sources are the creation of the god Saturn himself. Treatment at the balneological resort of Saturnia is carried out by bathing in a volcanic crater. This balneological resort is one of the few in Italy where bathing in the springs is completely free. Of course, first-class paid SPA centers are located in Saturnia, since there are a lot of thermal springs in this area, but the main source at the old mill is open to everyone in any season for free. The mild climate of Tuscany, the absence of industrial production nearby, oak and coniferous forests, all this perfectly complements the golden fund of Saturnia - mineral springs.

Story
The first mention of the presence of man on these lands dates back to the 2nd millennium BC. Around the 9th century BC. appear the first evidence of stay throughout the central Etruscans. The peak of the heyday of the Etruscan civilization on the territory of modern Tuscany falls on the 6th century BC: roads were built, among which the so-called Vie Cave between Sovana, Pitigliano and Sorano is still preserved, the majestic sacred thermal complex "Bagnone" was erected in Sasso- Pisano, the swamps were drained and the main Etruscan cities were built - Arezzo, Chiusi, Volterra, Populonia, Cortona and Roselle. In the III century BC. The Etruscans were defeated by the Roman army, and after a period of prosperity, accompanied by the development of crafts, mining and processing of iron, trade, Etruria began to decline. The Romans, having settled on the lands of the Etruscans, began to build new cities.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the region falls under the rule of the Ostrogoths and the Byzantines, and then the Lombards (569), who founded the duchy with its capital in Lucca. From the 11th century, fortress cities began to be actively built throughout the region, during the same period Pisa became the most powerful and influential city in the region and extended the power of the maritime republic to almost the entire territory of Tuscany.
From the XII century, the period of free communes begins, and Pistoia becomes the first commune in Italy. The first forms of democracy develop, which brought cultural, social and economic independence to Tuscany. In the same period, the independent Florentine and Siena Republics were formed, constantly at war with each other. Gradually, by the 16th century, Florence subjugated all Tuscan territories, including Siena. The Grand Duchy of Tuscany lasted until the middle of the 19th century. In 1860, Tuscany joined the Kingdom of Sardinia, which later became the Kingdom of Italy and then the Italian Republic.
culture
Italy is the country with the largest number of listed properties in the world, and Tuscany is one of the regions (along with Campania, Lombardy and Piedmont) that is richest in protected properties. These are the historical centers, San Gimignano, Pienza, Duomo Square, Val d'Orcia.
Tuscany is famous for its cultural heritage; a huge number of historical monuments and works of art are concentrated in this region. The cities of Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca are world-famous, rich in cultural monuments of Arezzo, Pistoia and Prato, perhaps less known among tourists, but no less rich in cultural attractions of Livorno, Grosseto and Massa.

And besides, in Tuscany there is a huge number of small towns, many of which are medieval fortress cities perfectly preserved over the centuries, fraught with priceless works of art. These are Cortona, Lucignano, Sansepolcro, Castiglion Fiorentino, Poppi (in the province of Arezzo); San Gimignano, Pienza, Colle di Val d'Elsa, Montepulciano, Chiusi, Monteriggioni (in the province of Siena); Fiesole and Certaldo (in the province of Florence); Massa Marittima, Orbetello, Pitigliano, Roselle, Sorano and Sovana (in the province of Grosseto); Bolgheri, Campiglia Marittima, Piombino, Populonia and Suvereto (in the province of Livorno); Barga, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Castiglione di Garfagnana, Pietrasanta, Viareggio, Villa Basilica (in the province of Lucca); Aulla, Fivizano, Fosdinovo, Pontremoli (in the province of Massa Carrara); Calci, Lari, San Giuliano Terme, San Miniato, Sasso Pisano, Vicopisano, (in the province of Pisa); Carmignano and Poggio a Caiano (in the province of Prato); Pescia, Quarrata, Montecatini Terme, Larciano, Collodi, Serravalle Pistoiese, Montevettolini (in the province of Pistoia).
Tourism
Tuscany is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world; among the regions of Italy itself, it ranks second after Lazio. Thanks to his richest cultural heritage, beautiful scenery, diversity of landscape, Tuscany is able to satisfy a wide range of tourist requests: from sightseeing to relaxing holidays in or by the sea. In general, more than 12,000 tourist structures of any type are available to guests of the region, and it is Tuscany that holds the national championship in the number of agritourism hotels, of which there are over 4,000.
Tuscany is proud of its rich tourist tradition, and not only thanks to such world-famous cities as Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca. The region is also rich in many other places, attractive for their beauty and centuries-old history. Small, but at the same time interesting towns of San Gimignano, Volterra, Cortona, Pienza, Pitigliano, larger centers such as Arezzo or Lucca annually attract a huge number of tourists, primarily from abroad.

Health tourism offers many resort places, first of all, in Versilia, where lovers of sea bathing already gathered at the beginning of the 20th century. Excellent places to relax by the sea are rich in the 100-kilometer stretch of coast between Livorno and Piombino, called the "Etruscan Coast", as well as the Tuscan Maremma. The islands of the Tuscan archipelago, among which the island of Elba stands out, attract lovers of scuba diving and boat trips.
Agritourism and accompanying food and wine tourism is well developed in all rural areas of the region, especially in the places of Maremma, Chianti, Mugello, Crete Senesi, Val di Chiana, Val di Cecina, Val d'Orcia.
Recently, cycling tourism has also been actively developing in the region: many equipped cycling routes wind through hundreds of kilometers in places of virgin nature among breathtaking landscapes.
Thermal tourism offers a wide range of centers in Saturnia, Rapolano, and Montecatini, while the complex in Monte Abetone attracts skiers and winter enthusiasts every winter.

As an example, let's take a short tour of the roads of Chianti.
It is difficult to say what attracts travelers more to the area located between Florence and Siena: ancient cities that carefully store the treasures of art and history or the unique beauty and diversity of the landscape. The first thing that meets on the way of a tourist heading from Florence towards the famous Chianti hills is the Carthusian monastery in Galluzzo. The main church of San Lorenzo and the monastic buildings certainly deserve attention for their unique architecture, characteristic of many Carthusian buildings. The monastic ensembles of this order are often called Certosa, and Certosa del Galluzzo is recognized by experts as one of the most outstanding Carthusian complexes in Italy (it is second only to the Pavia Certosa).

The monastery was founded in 1342. Since then, the small refuge of the Carthusians has been completed and rebuilt until it has acquired a modern look. The most important part of the entire complex was and remains a large courtyard, framed around the perimeter by a wide loggia. For people familiar with the work of Filippo Brunelleschi, the architectural design of the courtyard will remind you of the famous Orphanage in Florence, only instead of babies in medallions, holy representatives of the Christian Church are depicted.
The heart of Certosa is the church of San Lorenzo, which in times of trouble played not only a spiritual, but also a practical role. was designed like a real citadel and served, among other things, as an observation tower. The monastery of the monks is widely known not only for its architecture, its glory is made up of an extensive library and an amazing pinacothek, on the walls of which five lunettes with images of scenes from the life of Christ by Pontormo (16th century) have been preserved.
Continuing the journey towards Certaldo, first we pass a small town San Casciano in Val di Pesa, known primarily for the church of Misericordia, which houses several paintings of great artistic value, and then let's look at Fiano. Spread out on the highest of the surrounding hills, the city looks surprisingly picturesque against the backdrop of green fields and misty mountains. Here, Lucardo Castle and the Church of San Martino will open to our eyes, and a little further away - the Romanesque church dedicated to St. Lazarus.
The hilly landscapes are visibly enlivened by the small rivers Peza and Elsa - these are small tributaries that feed the famous Arno River. Just on one of them - Elsa and there is a town Chertaldo. The higher part of the city, known as the Castello (Castle), is very attractive for tourists because the medieval quarters dating back to the 13th-15th centuries have been preserved almost unchanged. Of particular interest in the old town are the Palazzo Vicari (or Palazzo Pretorio) and Boccaccio's house. This house invariably attracts admirers of Italian literature, because. in it was born in 1313, lived the last years of his life and died in 1375 Giovanni Boccaccio - the author of the famous short stories "Decameron". Now the building has been given to the national center of Boccaccio, there is also a unique library, which contains the works of the famous Italian author, published in different years and in different languages of the world.

Not far from Boccaccio's house is the Church of Saints Michele and Jacopo (XIII century), which has been restored in our time, the courtyard of the church is worth seeing additionally. On the right side is the tomb of Giovanni Boccaccio, the tombstone for which was made in 1503 by the sculptor Giovanni Francesco Rustici. Further in the direction of travel, a small square will open, where the Vicars Palace is located. At various times, it served both as a palace of supreme power and as the residence of the Florentine vicars (their coats of arms are emblazoned on the laconic facade of the building). The interior of the palazzo is decorated with frescoes by the artist Pier Francesco Fiorentino (late 15th - early 16th centuries).
Next comes the city San Gimignano, which amazes travelers with the unusual beauty of the silhouette with many towers. To many tourists, it seems to be the most picturesque of the cities of Tuscany. The main squares of San Gimignano - Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Cisterna (on which a water tank has been located since the 13th century) can be called typical Italian squares, however, they are worth a close look, and be sure to visit the university church and the palace of city government ( Palazzo del Popolo, XIII-XIV centuries), which houses a magnificent art gallery.

From San Gimignano the road leads to the town Poggibonsi, a little away from it is the secluded convent of San Lucchese.
medieval village Monteriggioni stands out against the background of the surrounding nature with powerful fortress walls and fourteen watchtowers. This outpost was built in 1213 as a watchtower to guard the northern borders of Siena, which lies surrounded by soft hills covered with green vineyards and silvery olive groves. Here, in the areas of Castellina and Greve, grapes are grown for the famous Chianti wine.

Worth a visit to the place Castello di Brolio- the birthplace of modern winemaking, producing Chianti wine. It was here that in 1870 Baron Bettino Ricasoli discovered the original recipe for the most famous Italian wine in the world. To obtain a divine drink, he took several specific varieties of grapes, both red and white, and in order to achieve a characteristic taste and aroma, he added raisins to the barrels. Not such a complex composition, but real wine can only be tasted here, among the Chianti hills, where Tuscan air and the Italian sun are added to the divine aroma of grapes.

Known all over the world, and everyone would like to come here and live here at least once in their life. The most characteristic feature of this incredible region of Italy is the amazing variety of climates and landscapes, which, together with a rich history, makes the region ideal for any traveler who decides to go to this amazing corner of Italy. Let's sketch a rough map of the most interesting places in Tuscany to help you create your own itinerary.
- the most visited coast, especially in summer, one of the most popular in Italy, and the Tuscan archipelago is very picturesque, unique in its kind. Seven large islands and many smaller ones- each is worth a visit. There are one-day mini-cruises from Castiglione della Pescaia and from the port of Sant Stefano, but we would not recommend them to you: a paradise must be explored slowly.
Depart from Piombino and after an hour of ferry travel you will arrive in Portoferraio. A city worth visiting (at least to admire the yachts anchored in the bay) because of Napoleon's Villa - Mulini Palace- the main attraction of the old city, which makes it possible to enjoy the beautiful view from the island.
But you can visit two fortresses - Fort Falcone and Fort Stella. Then you can plunge into the crystal clear waters of the bay, walk along the sandy beach, where, after arriving, the Argonauts rested and dried in the sun.
A whole book is not enough to describe everything that the island has to offer, we will mention one interesting place: Sanson beach, located along the road from Portoferraio to Viticcio, with its white pebbles, which present some difficulty if you walk (10 minutes), but the result of such a walk exceeds all expectations: swimming in this uncrowded place among fish and octopuses, you begin to understand your place in nature.
Tuscany: Marciana, Poggio, Marciana Marina
In addition to small coastal towns, it is worth visiting a higher place, Marchana (375 m), to walk (or even get to the annual Hiking Festival) along the medieval streets of this city, entering small colorful shops, and, if you are not afraid to trample the soles of your shoes, walk to Temple of the Mountain Madonna where the ubiquitous Napoleon met Maria Walewska. The small chapel has frescoes from the 16th century dedicated to Sodom.
To return, take the cable car to Mount Kapanne, which offers a wonderful view of the Elbe and other nearby islands. At the end, take a bike and ride through the chestnut forest and winding streets Poggio, look into Marchana Marina and spend a few hours on the streets" Lesser Marsiglia».
Leaving the island with pain in your heart (and believe me, we understand you), take aleatico infused with honey (very sweet wine) or Alchermes liqueur as a souvenir.
Tuscany: Piombino, Talamone, Monte Argentario, Giannutri
Back on the mainland in Piombino, head southeast to forest park Maremma, site of Etruscan-Roman and medieval landmarks, such as an abbey Saint Rabano.
Visiting the park will tire you out, so it's time to linger for an evening in Talamone, where you can go kitesurfing.
Look at it in the morning Dune Giannella, and then on the dune of Feniglia.
From Cape Argentario go counterclockwise to Port of Saint Stefano. Avoiding the crowds that fill the city in the summer, walk along the Mariners' Quay and take the ferry (50 minutes journey) to Giannutri, another island among the seven pearls of the Tuscan archipelago: the absence of cars brings an additional sound design to the mixture of Roman history and untouched nature, to the sound of the sea.
Pitigliano
Leaving the sailors, we will go in search of the real owners of these lands - Etruscans. This people, known for their mystical origins and no less mystical disappearance, who fought with the Romans, who, incidentally, took some inventions from the Etruscans, the Rassenes, as some called them, were a people who inhabited the entire territory and left many evidence of their existence (those who who are interested in the details - be sure to go to Chiusi Museum). One of the witnesses of those times that have survived to this day is a network of streets carved in stone, near Pitigliano, nicknamed The streets of quarries.
The purpose of these passages, up to twenty meters high, is not exactly known, perhaps they were water channels or sacred paths connecting burial places. From this mysterious place you can get to the archaeological excavations at Sovana, visit Tufo Archaeological Park and the astonishing Etruscan necropolis with about a hundred graves. Pitigliano himself , or "little Jerusalem", also worth a visit, for the sake of synagogue, cathedral and fountain of the Seven Trumpets.
Abbadia San Salvatore and Mount Amyata
We will continue our cross-country path to the ancient volcano Amiyata mountains, most high point(1700 m). On its slopes there are small settlements, almost villages, in the middle of beech and oak forests, with churches symbolizing the presence of the divine in the forces of nature. Roe deer, fallow deer, porcupines and - at nightfall - wolf howling will accompany the journey at the sources of the rivers Fiora, Albena and Paglia. Therefore, choose the safest roads, Abbadia San Salvatore, where along the way you can visit the beautiful Benedictine Abbey, founded in 743 by the Longobard king Rakis, and where the Codex Amiatinus, a copy of the oldest manuscript of the Bible, has been located for 1000 years.
Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano
To strengthen the body (for the soul, it will be enough for you to admire the local landscapes), take a look at Baths of Vignoni, famous for their hot thermal waters, and then drive to Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano, cities worth paying special attention to, built before 1000 and keeping the features of the Middle Ages: buy wines, cheeses and more wines, visit churches and cellars to see how many Brunello is worth the effort and why it is so expensive.
Sienna
After all, go to Siena - a city with a history of two thousand years, where there is a university and the oldest bank in the world, Monte dei Paschi founded in 1472. Siena is beautiful with its architecture, which combines three styles (the city seems to have made a leap in time from the Middle Ages to modernism). To put it more precisely, it is like an open-air museum.
Also famous Banner of Siena, which is carried twice a year, in July and August, through ten quarters of the city, selected from 17, to Campo Square. Those who are not indigenous to the city will probably never understand the essence of this run of just a few minutes and the historic procession in front of it, as well as why this ritual “lives” all year round, permeating the social life of the districts in which the chosen ones are located. quarters.
Visit Manja Tower(1348), listen to the big bell, the so-called sunto dedicated to Madonna Assunto; municipal palace with precious frescoed by Simone Martini and Ambrogio Lorenzetti; Church of Saint Augustine where you will find unique pieces of Sienese art; former hospital, now Museum of Santa Maria della Scala, an architectural monument and a repository of a whole collection of archaeological masterpieces; Siena Cathedral, made in the Romanesque-Gothic style.
