Koh Lipe Island (Thailand): description, recreation, maps, how to get there. How to get to Lipe. From Bangkok and from the islands of the Andaman Sea Koh Lipe Thailand how to get there
Koh Lipe Island in Satun Province, Thailand is perhaps the most pleasant place for lovers of a leisurely and relaxing beach holiday. Excellent and clean beaches, excellent diving and snorkeling, and at the same time sufficient distance from the main tourist package flows - these are the main features of the island of Koh Lipe.
A good idea to “stick” to Lipa is to combine business with pleasure - go and then have a long beach relaxation.
When is the best time to go to Koh Lipe?
The best weather in Lipa is from December to March. However, you can come here as early as October 20. The season from October 20 to November 16 and from April 1 to May 16 is considered low. At this time prices are lowest, but there may be rain and the sea is rough.
It should be taken into account that the island is small and there is little accommodation, so hotels for December and January must be booked in advance (6 or more months in advance).
How to get to Koh Lipe on your own
You can get to Lipe Island from Phuket, Phi Phi Islands, Lanta, Langkawi, etc. - it depends on where you are coming from. From Bangkok, you first need to get to the nearest pier, and then sail by sea to Lipa.
There are no airports on Lipa; you can only get there by sea, and not in any month. Navigation in this water area begins on October 19 and ends on May 16.
In the photo: ferry to Koh Lipe at Hat Yao pier
If you are flying from Europe, the route will be something like this: flight to Bangkok – flight to Hat Yai – bus to the pier – ferry or boat to Lipa. In fact, everything is much simpler than it seems.
The easiest option is to buy a single ticket on the website from Bangkok immediately with a transfer to Koh Lipe. Then you will simply board the plane in Bangkok, and then you will be accompanied everywhere, all the way to the island.
Important! Please note that in Bangkok, AirAsia flies from Don Mueang Airport (this is NOT the airport you will fly into from Russia, Ukraine or Europe). We still need to get to this airport. Therefore, getting from Europe to Koh Lipe in 1 day will be too tiring. It's better to at least spend the night in Bangkok.
Buying a ticket to Koh Lipe looks like this: in the “where” field, look for “Thailand (Island Transfer)” and select “Lipe”.
You will first fly to Hat Yai, then you will be taken to the port and board the ferry to Koh Lipe. The entire journey will take from 6 to 9 hours. Along the way, you will be accompanied by company employees. Everything is simple, clear and understandable.
How to get to Lipe on your own, without a transfer
Most tourists travel to Koh Lipe either by ferry from the Malay island of Langkawi, or from Thailand, using combined bus and ferry tickets, which are sold at any travel agencies throughout Thailand. To decide which places are best to get to Koh Lipe, see the map:
I'll tell you more:
How to get from Penang (Malaysia) to Koh Lipe
1. First take a ferry to Langkawi, price 70RM, 3 hours ride.
2. Then transfer from Langkawi to the ferry to Koh Lipe, price 118RM, ride 1.5 hours. It is better to leave for Langkawi from the Telaga pier.
Single tickets can be purchased at the ticket office in Penang.
How to get from Bangkok to Koh Lipe
1. Fly to one of the nearest airports – Krabi or Hat Yai.
2. Next, take buses or minivans to the Pak Bara or Hat Yao piers.
3. Then another transfer by ferry or boat.
Prices depend on the route and the chosen transport, for example, the estimated price Krabi Airport - Koh Lipe (ferry + minivan) is 1400 baht/person. Speedboats are more expensive.
How to get from Phuket to Koh Lipe
Many tourists travel to Lipe Island directly from the water, on speedboats or ferries. However, this option is only for those who can tolerate pitching well. Long and tedious.
A direct ticket can be bought in Phuket at any travel agency right on the street.
In the photo: tourists disembarking from the boat. Lipe Island
By the way, Lipa does not have its own pier, so at the very last stage you will have to transfer from the ferry to small boats - longtails, with subsequent disembarkation into the water. So prepare 50 baht and take care of good shoes and cameras :)
The quietest months on Lipe Island are October and April. In other months there are many tourists.
Beaches of Koh Lipe
As elsewhere in Thailand, Koh Lipe does not have a single circular beach along which one could go around the entire island. Lipa has only three major beaches - Sunrise, Sunset and Pattaya. And several small ones that can only be reached by boat. The beaches are somewhat similar - the sand is clean and white everywhere, the entrance to the water is gentle. However, there are differences, which experienced tourists take advantage of. So, let's look at the map of Ko Lipe.
On the map Lipe looks like a horseshoe
Pattaya Beach is primarily a transshipment base. Teams of tourists arrive and depart here, and there is also a Thai immigration office and several large hotels. The beach is long and clean, and quite suitable for swimming, but this is not Bounty, if you know what I mean :)

Sunset is the most picturesque and “wild” beach in Koh Lipe. There are steep slopes, there are more stones along the shore and, accordingly, fewer boats.
Pictured: the end of Sunset Beach on Ko Lipe
Sunrise Beach is perhaps the most balanced. There is enough space for everyone, both beachgoers and boats.

The best beach bars are located on Sunrise, where it is so pleasant to spend evenings chatting with friends, listening to music and drinking Chang.

Diving and snorkeling in Lipa
In the photo: newcomers to Lipa quickly master diving
Lipe Island is located within the Ko Tarutao National Park, so the surrounding waters are simply ideal for good diving. The surrounding coral reefs are rich in many species of tropical fish, and you can also admire turtles, barracudas and dolphins. Beginner divers should take training tours to the neighboring islands of Sawang and Chabang. The most advanced diving companies are: “Adang Sea Divers” and “Ko Lipe Castaway Divers”.
If you are looking for budget accommodation, you will most likely stay in the center of the island, in one of the guesthouses around the local Walking Street. A little noisy, but close to the whole tourist scene: cafes, bars, shopping. One of the newest and inexpensive hotels is “A Plus Deluxe Hotel”. You can view prices and book
In the photo: inexpensive and modern hotel “A Plus Deluxe Hotel”, Koh Lipe
Hotels on the west coast of Lipe Island (especially on the hills) are quieter and have gorgeous views from the rooms, but they have their own problem - nightly transport - either constantly calling a local "taxi" or walking, which is inconvenient in the dark.

If the main purpose of your vacation is diving, it is best to stay in one of the authentic resorts of Sunrise Beach, like “Adang Sea Divers & Eco Lodge”- simple, but very cheap. Here you can spend more time among fellow submariners, practice with equipment, and loading onto boats will be more optimal for you.

Comfortable hotels in Ko Lipe
The most luxurious hotels on the island are definitely the Serendipity Resort, Mali Resort and the modern Idyllic Concept Resort. If your budget allows, be sure to live in one of them!

Koh Lipe is the southernmost island of Thailand, a resort that is little known among our tourists. However, on the first day in Koh Lipe we met a lot of Russian speakers. However, the very next day and until the end of our “vacation” we no longer heard our native speech. What is interesting about this island, how does it differ from other islands of Thailand?
Ko Lipe, Thailand
Sea and beaches
The most important thing that now sets Koh Lipe apart from other destinations is that the island has stunning beaches, one might even say, some of the best in Thailand. Better only on . It is for the sake of paradise beaches and the sea that tourists from all over the world come here. Just 20 years ago, the beaches were deserted and semi-wild, but now civilization has reached here. But despite the abundance of tourists and hotels, Lipe beaches are still beautiful. Thanks to the beaches, you can close your eyes to the other shortcomings of the island. We compiled our rating of the best beaches in Ko Lipe, and gave first place to a beach that is not recommended by guidebooks.

That feeling when swimming in the sea is perfect
If anyone hasn’t seen it in the last article, watch our video review of the best beaches on the island.
Nature
Not to say that Koh Lipe has any particularly outstanding nature, but the views are pleasing to the eye in some corners of the island. For example, when you cross the bridge from Pattaya Beach to the secret beach. Large stones, greenery, clear turquoise water...
My favorite place on Lipe

Atmosphere of relaxation and carefree
The third thing we noticed was the atypical atmosphere for Thailand. With the onset of darkness, everything changes on the beach, music comes from dozens of cozy cafes, fire shows are held, kind, half-drunk people of all nationalities walk along the shore, intoxicated by tropical nature and the sea breeze, there are bright stars in the sky, and glowing plankton can be seen in the waves under your feet.
We came to the beach every evening and enjoyed the moment. Very reminiscent of the evening beaches of Goa. So, if you find yourself in Koh Lipe, be sure to go to Pattaya Beach after 8 pm. Feel the realization that you are at the end of the world, on a tiny tropical island in the open sea, enjoy the warm breeze and bright stars without thinking about anything else.
Here and now
This atmosphere is conveyed very well, you are instantly infected by it and are already wandering along the beach with a slight smile, as if on a high. You smile at the tourists you meet, just like you. I don’t want to think about anything bad, I don’t want to do anything. During our entire time in Ko Lipe, we did not do any work or blog, but simply relaxed; we did not have enough strength for anything else.
Walking Street
The first place everyone comes to when visiting Koh Lipe is Walking Street. The street stretches across the entire island from Pattaya Beach and almost to the opposite Sunrise Beach. On the first day, you may get the wrong impression that the whole island looks like this street - cafes, massage parlors and shops. But that's not true.
Walking Street is the most lively and cheerful street in Koh Lipe, I don’t even know what we would do if this street didn’t exist. All shops and inexpensive cafes are concentrated here. The rest of the restaurants and bars are located on the beach, and we didn’t see any shops in other parts of the island at all. Here you can buy souvenirs and shop a little, order transfers to other regions of Thailand and Malaysia, and also find inexpensive overnight accommodation.
Where can I order a transfer from the airport?
We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online and paid by card. We were met at the airport with a sign with our name on it. We were taken to the hotel in a comfortable car. You've already talked about your experience In this article.
What distinguishes Walking Street in Koh Lipe from its counterpart in Pattaya is that there are no prostitutes, lady fights, go-go bars or other debauchery here. I’m sure that you can find entertainment here if you look hard enough or ask one of the locals, but there’s nothing like that in the open.

Negative aspects of Koh Lipe
A large number of boats on all beaches
The island cannot be called paradise. There are no bounty beaches on Ko Lipe. The beaches are good, of course, but not heavenly. There are many boats on all beaches. They create inconvenience with their noise, pollute the water, and also pose a danger if swimming outside fenced areas.
Boat parking at Pattaya Beach
Longtail boats in the lagoon at Karma Beach
Low tides
At lunchtime the tide begins to ebb on all beaches. At low tide it becomes very shallow, and stones appear at the bottom that were previously at depth. On our first day we went snorkeling and were very disappointed. But when they came 2 days later in the morning, they couldn’t believe their eyes, how different everything looked here in the morning. The main thing is to go to the sea in the first half of the day. Low tides begin in the afternoon and swimming at this time will not be so pleasant.
Low tide at Sunrise beach. Knee depth

High housing prices
Housing prices are approximately 2 times higher. The cheapest options are tents at campsites for 500 baht per night. Average rooms in guest rooms with a fan - 1000 baht, average hotels offering rooms with air conditioning and hot water - from 1500 baht. These are the prices for accommodation here during the season from November to March. In the low season, the price tag is lower, but who needs to go to Koh Lipe during the rainy season, when the sea waves are stronger and the sky is cloudy.
Most hotels in Koh Lipe are built in the form of bungalows. There are so many options right on the beach. But if you booked a hotel not on the beach, don’t worry, you can walk to the sea from the center of the island in 5-10 minutes.

Bungalow on the beach (7000 baht per night)
Inflated prices for products
Well, as if we understand that this is an island, everything here is imported, but for some reason on other islands of Thailand, such as Koh Lanta, Koh Chang and even Koh Lan, prices are not inflated. And here most products cost exactly 2 times more than on the mainland. Especially at 7-Eleven. But the prices in the cafe do not differ from ordinary tourist restaurants in other Thai resorts.
7-eleven on Walking street Koh Lipe
Motorbikes and tuk-tuks
Their presence and movement along all pedestrian streets is very infuriating. Wherever you go, every minute someone will be driving behind or in front, and you need to move away, dodge, and then breathe in dust and exhaust fumes. It is impossible to move normally along Walking Street during the day; mopeds are constantly driving back and forth. It is especially annoying when a tuk-tuker on a motorcycle with a sidecar is driving along a narrow street, as it takes up the entire width of the street. It’s good that at least from 6 pm they are prohibited from driving Volking and they don’t go to the beach.
I remember that motorcyclists on yet another “paradise” beach in Sri Lanka caused us such irritation before.
Garbage and general filthiness
This circumstance surprised me most on the first day. Koh Lipe is part of Tarutao National Park; everyone pays 200 baht to enter the island. But then why did the locals ruin their island so much? This is a national park, is there really no control at all? The fact that tourists litter, a bull is thrown somewhere or a bottle is left - these are all little things. It is the locals who cause the greatest harm to the island, that is, the Thais and Burmese themselves who live here.
Ko Lipe is no longer the same (c)
Such landscapes are everywhere, you just need to move 20 meters away from Walking Street. You don’t have to go far to see all this garbage, devastation, and abandoned building materials. It’s not tourists who litter the island like this, as you understand, but the Thais themselves. Or the Burmese, for whom this is the norm, but then why don’t the Thais do anything?
I'm loving your NATIONAL PARK
The motto of the residents of Ko Lipe is: where I live, I live there!
Garbage and general filth are the biggest disappointment and culture shock on Koh Lipe. Okay, the crap island of Koh Larn near Pattaya, where the situation is exactly the same, but at least it’s not a national park. I don’t know if any of the tourists paid attention to this, but I have never seen such “national parks” before. The park must maintain and preserve pristine nature as much as possible. I really hope that such horror will never happen in the Similan Islands National Park, although the prerequisites already exist.
Garbage barge on Ko Lipe
And this is how they remove garbage from the island. Well done, of course, for removing it, although not all of it, but why is a garbage barge being placed in the very center of one of the best beaches? And it stands here not for 5 minutes, but for several days until it is full. It is moored exactly 50 meters from the bungalow of the Lipe Power Beach Resort. How great it is for the guests of this hotel to go out onto the porch early in the morning, admiring the sea, and take a deep breath of the fresh garbage smell...
The Adang archipelago on the border of Thailand and Malaysia is often called the “Thai Maldives” for its snow-white sand. Lipe is the only inhabited island in this archipelago. Lovers of serene bliss come here, as well as divers, since representatives of almost a quarter of the species of marine life that exist in nature are found in the coastal waters of Ko Lipe.

The island does not have its own pier; boats arriving at Koh Lipe moor at a special floating platform, on which tourists transfer to small boats of local residents, who in turn take them ashore. This pleasure costs only 50 THB per person. The return trip from the island to the platform with boats will also cost 50 THB.
The highlight of this archipelago is the Tarutau National Park, a must-see. Prices on the page are as of September 2018.

How to get to Lipe Island
It is easier to get to the island in the high season: ferry services are organized from many popular resorts in the Andaman Sea: Lanta, Phuket, Phi Phi, etc. In the low season, boats operate only from the Pak Bara pier, which is most conveniently accessible from the town of Hat -Yay.
From Bangkok
- The fastest way is air travel. Flights to Hat Yai depart from Don Mueang Airport, which is a 40-minute drive from Suvarnabhumi, where planes fly from Russia. Then you can take a taxi to the pier in Pakbara (about 1000 THB) or buy a comprehensive ticket to Koh Lipe at the airport for the same money. Or go to the bus terminal in Hat Yai (150 THB by tuk-tuk or 400 THB by taxi), where you can take a bus to the pier. From Hat Yai to Pakbar it takes about 2 hours.
- In addition, at the capital's Don Muang Airport you can immediately buy a comprehensive ticket to Ko Lipe, which includes a flight, transfer to the pier and a ferry ticket. In terms of cost, such a route is comparable to an independent one, and there are no worries about changing transport: you will be met and escorted everywhere.
- You can also get to Hat Yai from Bangkok by train. An evening train departs from Hua Lamphong Station and arrives in Hat Yai early in the morning.
- Another budget option is a bus. They depart to Hat Yai from the capital's southern terminal and travel all night (10-12 hours). The cost of a bus trip is comparable to a train ticket, but the bus travels slightly faster than the train, and also arrives directly at the bus station.
From the pier in Pakbara you can sail to the island either by speedboat or on the so-called ferries. They take a full hour longer (2.5 hours), but sailing on them is much more comfortable than on a speedboat, which shakes from being hit by waves (and the seats are hard and uncomfortable), and the spray often hits passengers. Ticket prices for speedboats and ferries do not differ in price.
It's also worth considering that boats only operate between the mainland and the island during the day, so it's best to arrive in Pakbara as early as possible.

From the southern resorts of Thailand
In the case of Lipe, islands such as Phuket and Lanta can be called “southern” only conditionally, since they are located north of the country’s southernmost archipelago. In high season, boats run from most of these southern resorts to Ko Lipe. The ticket costs about 1000-1200 THB, it will be much cheaper (but also longer) to take a bus to the pier in Pakbara and from there swim to the island.
From Malaysia
Since the island is located on the border with Malaysia, Ko Lipe can also be reached from this country. The closest to it - just 30 km - is the Malaysian island of Langkawi, from where boats start towards Thai Lipe. Guests from Malaysia go through border control upon arrival on the island, however, the checkpoint on Koh Lipe is only open in the high season; in the low season, you will have to cross the border on the mainland, in the Thai city of Satun, from there get to Pakbar and cross to Lipe.
Next to the Adang Archipelago is the Tarutao Island Nature Reserve. This is a fairly large island, most of which is occupied by tropical jungle. There is no tourist infrastructure or full-fledged hotels here - only small guesthouses and private bungalows that are rented out to tourists.
You can get to Tarutao in the same way as to Lipe, since boats going to it from the Pakbara pier make a stop off the coast of Tarutao. The cost of a ticket to it is about a hundred baht cheaper than to Ko Lipe.
Lipe Island is part of the Tarutao Marine Reserve, a picturesque archipelago of 30 small islands. This reserve is deservedly valued for the beauty of its nature and the purity of its water - it is protected by UNESCO as one of the natural monuments of Southeast Asia. It is part of the southernmost province of Thailand, Satun - neighboring Malaysia (Langkawi Island) can be reached in less than 1 hour by speed boat. At the end of the 19th century, this area was chosen by sea pirates, and now Buddhists, Muslims, sea gypsies and representatives of small ethnic groups of Chao Le.
There are 3 main beaches on Lipe Island - Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach and Sunset Beach. Boats and ferries dock at Pattaya Beach, the majority of hotels are located here, as well as many coastal restaurants and bars right on the sandy beach - in the evenings there is a harmonious combination of music and the sound of the surf, colorful “fire shows” take place on the shore and young people dance to the music of the surrounding bars right on the sand. Rastafarian bars are especially popular, where reggae is played in the evenings and colorful portraits of Bob Marley hang. Sunrise and especially Sunset beaches are small and more secluded, with 2-3 hotels located on each of them. The island of Koh Lipe is small and can be completely walked around in 2 hours.
When staying on Lipe Island, a day trip to the diverse and picturesque neighboring islands is a must - every morning the hotels organize Island Hopping trips on long-nosed motorboats for their guests, they start around 09-00 am and end around 16-00. The cost of such a trip ranges from 650 baht ($23) to 850 baht ($30) per person, depending on the number of islands visited, including fins and snorkeling masks. The program of such a trip usually includes:
Ko Adong- the largest island after Lipe, covered with lush tropical greenery, surrounded by a coral reef with many marine inhabitants (interesting for snorkeling). The island's interior is home to numerous fresh water streams and is home to many monkeys and iguanas, and on its east coast is a waterfall that was once used by pirates to replenish fresh water supplies. In December, large sea turtles swim ashore - this is where they lay their eggs and newborn offspring emerge from them in early April.
Ko Hin Ngam(Island of Beautiful Stones). It is strewn with many stones of bizarre shapes and colors, polished by waves and sea surfs.
Ko Kai It amazes with dense white sand that creaks underfoot like snow on a frosty night. On the island there is a huge rock in the form of a giant gate, which has become the symbol of Tarutao.
Ko Ravi- a tiny uninhabited island with turquoise sea and snow-white sand.
The best season on Lipe Island is from November to April; February is considered the peak season with the best conditions for swimming and snorkeling. Between May and October, storms and tropical downpours are common; ferry service to Lipe becomes irregular during this season and depends on weather conditions.
The most convenient way to get to Lipe Island is by speed boat, which runs twice a day from Pakbara pier in the mainland of Satun province. Transfer from Phuket Airport (or Phuket hotels) to Pakbara Pier takes about 6 hours, transfer from Krabi Airport (or Krabi hotels) to Pakbara Pier takes about 3 hours. Boat schedule:

ATTENTION:
For all tours with flights Moscow - Phuket - Moscow, 1 transit night in Phuket at the beginning of the program and 1 transit night in Phuket at the end of the program are required.
For those flying via Bangkok, the most convenient way to get to Koh Lipe is:

· transfer Pakbara pier - Hat Yai airport (1.5 hours)
· domestic flight Hat Yai - Bangkok TG_236 15:35 / 17:00
Everything stated below is relevant for the high season, from early November to mid-April. During the low season, the number of ships traveling to Lipe Island is sharply reduced, and on some routes, such as Phuket - Lipe and Langkawi - Lipe, flights are canceled altogether.
Most tourists arrive to Lipe either from Bangkok or from the islands and tourist centers of the southern Andaman Sea closest to Lipe. It is these routes that will be described below.
From Bangkok to Koh Lipe
The closest airport to Lipa, receiving flights from Bangkok, is located near the city of Hat Yai.
Several airlines operate flights from Bangkok to Hat Yai Airport, including low-cost carriers AirAsia and Nok Air.
Ticket prices for this route vary widely, starting from 1,200 baht. This price can be obtained if you pay for the ticket several months before departure. If you buy a ticket a few days before departure, the price can significantly exceed 2000 baht.
At Hat Yai Airport you can buy a transfer (joint ticket) to Lipe Island, which includes a minibus ride to Pakbara Pier and then by speedboat to Lipe Island.
Similarly, from Bangkok you can get to Lipe Island via. Such a trip takes approximately the same time as a trip through Hat Yai Airport, but usually costs a little more.
If you prefer to travel by taxi, a trip from Hat Yai Airport to Pakbara Pier will cost you 1800 - 2000 baht, from Trang Airport - 2200 baht. All prices for taxis, minibuses and speedboats are indicated as of the beginning of 2019. Over the past 10 years, they have changed slightly, all that has happened over the years is that a minibus transfer has risen in price by 100 baht.
Note. The last ship from Pakbara pier usually leaves at 15-30. Accordingly, if you do not want to spend the night on the pier, it makes sense to arrive at Hat Yai Airport no later than 12 noon.

From the islands of southern Thailand to Lipe Island cheaply
If you go from the islands of Phuket and Lanta to Lipe not by a short road (by sea), but by land, along the shore of the Andaman Sea to the Pakbara pier and only from there by sea to the island of Lipe, then you can save more than 2 thousand baht and 800 baht, respectively.
Such transfers, by minibus to Pakbara Pier, can be easily purchased both in Phuket and Lanta; their cost can be found here:.
From Langkawi to Lipe Island
Lipe Island is located on the border with Malaysia, and Lipe is about 30 km from the nearest Malaysian resort. There are no difficulties in crossing the Thai-Malaysian border, Russian citizens do not need to obtain visas, and if you have time, it would be a good idea to visit both Lipe Island and Langkawi Island. Such a trip between the islands costs 1,200 baht, and takes about an hour, not counting the time for passport control and other formalities.
If you are planning a trip along this route, do not forget that boats operate between Lipe and Langkawi only in high season, from early November to mid-April. In the low season, you can also get to Lipe from the island of Langkawi, but not directly, but by a roundabout road through land (Langkawi - mainland Malaysia - crossing the border on the mainland - trip to Pakbara pier - and only from there by sea to Lipe island). According to Malaysian travel agents, this road can be covered in 5 hours. This thesis, however, does not need to be taken quite literally.
