Kota kuno Pompeii dibentuk kembali pada abad ke-6 SM. Jika bukan karena letusan Gunung Vesuvius yang membakar seluruh kota hingga rata dengan tanah, menutupinya dengan lapisan abu vulkanik yang sangat besar, Pompeii akan tetap ada tidak jauh dari Napoli. Tidak ada yang menganggap tembok ini penting, dan hanya sekitar 100 tahun kemudian di reruntuhan Pompeii mereka menemukan sebuah tablet dengan tulisan "Pompeii" terukir di atasnya. Teater Besar untuk 5.000 penonton (abad ke-2 SM, dibangun kembali pada masa pemerintahan Augustus), dibuat menurut model Yunani, berdiri di lereng bukit. Di sebelah timur Bolshoi terletak Teater Kecil, atau Odeon(teater picolo Hai Odeon).
