What you can and cannot take with you on a plane. Aeroflot's new restrictions: gadgets and excess equipment must be checked in as luggage. What can be carried in hand luggage
For travelers who fly infrequently, it is worth knowing what exactly you cannot take in hand luggage. Carriers' requirements may vary, but the general rules are the same. Knowing them will help you avoid possible problems when boarding a plane.
Carry-on baggage sizes sometimes vary depending on the airline. Typically, a bag or suitcase should fit within these parameters.
The sum of the three measurements should not be more than 115 cm. The weight of hand luggage is limited to 5-10 kg. The exact numbers need to be clarified with the selected airline.
It will not be possible to deceive airport workers, because verification of compliance with these dimensions is carried out using a special frame and scales.
- Scissors, manicure sets. It is acceptable on some airlines to take a file with a rounded tip into the cabin.
- Knitting needles, crochet hooks, sewing needles.
- Corkscrew, knives, including penknives and stationery ones.
- Syringe needles. You can take them with you only if you have a doctor’s certificate.
The ban also applies to straight razors. But these do not include models with replaceable attachments or disposable machines. Also, deodorants, hairspray or hair styling foam, which are made in the form of an aerosol, cannot be carried into the salon.
You also cannot take Segways, hoverboards, electric scooters, etc. with you. It is permissible to take a baby stroller on board if its dimensions meet the standards for hand luggage.
You should always check with the carrier for a list of what you can bring on the plane. It is usually acceptable to take food, personal care products, medicines and other items with you during the flight.
You can bring snacks on board in the form of nuts, apples, bananas, sandwiches with hard cheese or sausage. Cookies and chips, sweets, and fitness bars are not prohibited.
If you need to take dry ice to cool perishable foods, then often the permissible amount is no more than two kilograms per person.
From medications you can take tablets, capsules, powders. And liquid syrups, drops, gels, creams, peroxides should also be poured into 100 ml bottles. The exception is for vital medications if you have a doctor’s certificate.
- The drugs must be in the manufacturer's packaging.
- Prescription medications are transported along with a prescription or a doctor’s certificate.
- Medicines containing psychotropic substances can be taken with you if you have a prescription from a doctor indicating the name of the drug in Latin. When flying abroad, the drug will need to be declared.
Before traveling abroad, check the list of medications that can be imported into your destination country, as strict restrictions may apply, such as in the UAE and the USA.
In your carry-on bag you can only take cosmetics in solid form - powder, blush, loose highlighter, shadows, eyeliners, eyebrows, lips.
Liquid eyeliner and lipstick, lip glosses, foundation and concealer must be checked in luggage. The same applies to creams, shampoos and deodorant.
You can take a laptop, tablet, photo and video camera with chargers for them into the salon. Mobile phones must be put into airplane mode. The only smartphone model that will not be allowed to be carried on board or checked in as luggage is the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.
You can also take a hair dryer, straightener and curling iron with you. Air carriers will even allow you to take a slow cooker if it fits into the dimensions.
Always keep your child's passport or birth certificate with you, especially when flying abroad. Sometimes luggage is sent on a different flight or it may get lost. As for valuables, you can take jewelry, costume jewelry, and a wallet with you.
You are allowed to take a toothbrush and toothpaste into the salon; the comb must not have a handle. It is permissible to bring wet wipes, baby diapers, and feminine hygiene items.
Containers for any liquid substances should be 100 ml. If you take an incompletely filled bottle of a larger volume, it will not be allowed through. The only exception is baby food.
It is permissible to bring juices, water, and other drinks poured into small containers. One passenger can take no more than a liter of liquids with him.
This does not apply to duty free purchases.- drinks, perfumes and the like. The main thing is that you have the purchase receipt and the whole package in your hands. You should not open packages from Duty Free before leaving for the destination city, so that restrictions do not apply to them.
Study especially carefully the requirements for hand luggage from foreign carriers. They often turn out to be tougher than those of Russian airlines. The same rule applies to flights - when flying abroad, the rules will be much stricter than within the country.

In 2010, about 1,700 incidents involving ill-fated chocolate eggs were reported in the United States. This was the reason for the ban not only on wholesale, but also on individual import of Kinder surprises. The measure was explained by the fact that the eggs contained “inedible components” that could pose a danger to a small child.

If you are flying to Hawaii on vacation, should know that the import of any fruits and vegetables into this US state is generally strictly prohibited (not only because borders, but also with the main territories USA), as well as their export from Hawaii.

Also some items of wild flora and fauna (prohibited, For example, import of ivory products, tortoise shell). In addition, flammable and explosive materials, weapons, counterfeit and counterfeit goods
From scissors to alcohol
You can check in alcohol in your luggage if it is no stronger than 70%. Whether alcohol will be allowed in hand luggage depends on the laws of the country and the rules of the airline. This is allowed in the USA. Russian laws are vague. In any case, you cannot drink your own alcohol on board the plane. You need a glass for courage - wait until the flight attendants offer it or order from the menu if the flight is not alcohol-free.
In cases where alcohol is allowed in hand luggage, it must be in branded bottles of a maximum of 100 ml. Pack them together with other liquids in a zip lock bag measuring 20x20 cm. Alcohol from duty free can be taken in larger bottles, but they must be in a branded sealed bag with a receipt.
How much alcohol you can carry by plane depends on airport security and customs regulations. What they miss during pre-flight inspection, customs officers can turn away: their requirements are often more stringent. There are no general rules, customs in each country is different, so double-check the rules before flying.
Baby food is not subject to restrictions on the carriage of liquids and gels in hand luggage. This means you can take into the cabin as much water, milk, formula and baby food (usually up to 2 years) as you need for the duration of the flight. Even if the containers are more than 100 ml, you will not break anything.
Medicines are subject to restrictions on the transport of liquids. You can take medicines in solid forms in your hand luggage. Liquids, ointments, gels, syrups, creams and aerosols are also possible, but in containers up to 100 ml, packaged in one transparent bag measuring 20x20 cm. The exception is medications that are vital in flight, for example, for patients with diabetes. Take them in containers of the required size, just bring a doctor’s certificate.
Almost all countries are members of ICAO, the international civil aviation organization. It regulates everything related to flights: from the design of aircraft engines to the rules for transporting batteries. ICAO issues lengthy documents with standards, which all participating countries are required to comply with, and recommendations, which are good form to follow, but not necessary. There are other international organizations.
Countries have their own laws. In Russia this is the Air Code, Federal Aviation Regulations and a bunch of smaller legal acts. In the European Union - regulation No. 300/2008. They comply with international standards, but not all airports fulfill them 100%, but recommendations- in general it is voluntary. Therefore, control and safety standards are different everywhere. In Ben-Gurion they are inspected as before a stage, but in Edinburgh there is no inspection at all.
Don't be scared! The countries have agreed well on many things. The lists of things that can and cannot be carried in hand luggage and checked luggage are more or less the same. Understand the principle and, just in case, look at the list on the airline or airport website before flying. To extract the necessary information from Order of the Russian Federation No. 123-456-AB∞, you need to spend half a day on the Internet, and on the Aeroflot website 5 minutes is enough.
Every airport in the world is full of passengers who find prohibited items in their luggage and carry-on luggage. Corkscrews, knives, lighters, scissors - nothing special, but you won’t be allowed on the plane with these things, and you won’t be able to check some things in your luggage. Most often these things are thrown away. But what to do if the knife is grandfather’s inheritance, and the perfume is a wedding gift? With the right approach, nothing will be lost.
In your luggage before check-in,
in your luggage after check-in - that is, when you have already checked it in,
in hand luggage when you can still return to check-in (on a domestic flight or on an international flight before passport control),
in hand luggage when you can no longer return to check-in (on an international flight after passport control).
Now we’ll tell you about each one.
- You will be asked to pick up the item, return to registration (if possible) and select any option from point 1;
- The item is confiscated;
- The item will be confiscated, but you will receive it on the way back. If a Segway or Zippo lighter is important to you, explain this to the airline or security staff. There is a chance that it will be stored at the airport until you return.
- The item is confiscated;
- Explain to security that this item is valuable. There is a chance that it will be given to the airline, which will take it on the plane and give it to you after the flight;
- Occasionally, airlines may check your property as baggage themselves, and you will receive it at the baggage carousel at the arrival airport;
- Often, confiscated items are stored at the airport until the owners return. Just make sure that the item was not just confiscated, but that a document was drawn up according to which you can receive it.
Olga Minaeva, St. Petersburg:“Once I was flying to visit friends in London and grabbed three bottles of wine. I didn’t even know that they had to be checked in as luggage. They found the wine during hand luggage inspection and sent me to the airline counter to sort it out. I run to British Airways, and they say: “Leave it, you’ll pick it up on the way back.” I arrived back late in the evening, the office was closed and everyone was shrugging their shoulders. I was already upset, but then they called someone and they brought out my package, tightly sealed with tape. It was terribly pleasant, more than a hundred bucks after all!”
Entry into the USA - its features and nuances
Are you planning to visit America? Then you should take into account a lot of nuances and rules, related to the trip. Regardless of whether you choose to travel by sea or air, you will be required to complete a U.S. Customs and Border Protection declaration upon arrival in America. In addition to the declaration, the customs service may ask you to fill out two more forms - green and white. In these documents you need to provide information about yourself and your address in America.
If you are traveling to America for the first time, then you should be prepared for the fact that during customs control, an officer of this service will definitely ask about the purpose of your visit to the USA. You should also be prepared for the fact that your fingerprints and digital photo will forever remain in a specialized database of foreigners arriving in the United States. Nobody suspects you of anything, these are simply the rules of customs control. Moreover, this procedure will only take a few seconds.
There are no restrictions on the import or export of American or foreign currency from the United States, but if you took with you on a trip an amount greater than $10,000 or another currency equivalent to this amount, you must report this to a Customs and Border Protection officer. In accordance with current legislation, you will have to fill out the appropriate form, where you need to indicate the amount of imported funds.
There are also certain rules for importing food into the United States. Perhaps you are going to America to visit your family or friends and want to bring them something delicious as a gift? However, it is better to immediately abandon such an idea. The fact is that all imported vegetables and fruits are subject to declaration. In addition, many food products are prohibited from being imported into the United States. Depending on the sanitary situation, the import of meat, chicken, and meat products may be prohibited in the country. When entering the mainland United States, you must present every fruit or vegetable you have to a customs officer for inspection.
If you are determined to please your loved ones, then you can take with you confectionery, sweets, chocolate, processed cheese, honey, jam. As a rule, such products are allowed for import and do not raise objections from customs officers. In each American state, the standards for products allowed for import may be different. Typically, import rules change due to outbreaks of diseases in individual cities and states.
You should not ignore the rules of the customs service. For example, if you do not declare a particular imported product, you will be subject to a fine of 10 thousand dollars as a punishment. Agree, there is hardly a product that could be valued at 10 thousand, even if it is homemade pies for close relatives.
As mentioned above, each state has its own rules for importing products. When going to Hawaii, you should know that the import of any fruits and vegetables here is strictly prohibited. Moreover, this applies to products not only from other countries, but also from other US states. You will have to leave all the fruits and vegetables that you have with you in special containers that are located at the control line. Of course, such rules are quite strict and not everyone understands, but in this way the authorities of this delightful natural corner of the earth are trying to protect and preserve its unique flora and fauna from various diseases.
When passing through customs control, special attention is paid to checking the traveler’s medications. It is best to take with you only those medications that you will need to stay healthy while in the United States. Please note that some medications are not approved by the US Federal Drug Administration. You will not be allowed to bring such drugs into America. If any of these medications are vital for you, then you must have a medical certificate confirming this fact.
The rules for importing goods into the United States are regulated by law. Before you start packing your bags, it is best to know in advance the list of permitted and prohibited goods. Thus, you will insure yourself against possible troubles during customs control.
What You Can't Carry in Baggage on an Airplane 2019 in the USA
US authorities have temporarily banned airline passengers from eight countries in the Middle East and North Africa from carrying laptops, tablets, cameras and other electronics in their carry-on luggage on non-stop flights to the United States. The ban will affect all airlines in the world except American ones.
It is reported that the United States may have questions about the passenger screening procedure at specific airports. This applies to direct flights to the States. Authorities believe that the threat is reduced if passengers and their belongings are checked again, using different equipment, during a connection in another country.
Jordan's national airline, Royal Jordanian Airlines, posted a tweet, which was later deleted, informing its passengers of a ban on the transport of equipment that would come into force on March 21. It was reported that the restrictions would only affect flights to New York, Chicago, Detroit and Montreal.
One of the American officials, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the ban may be related to the actions of “Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a terrorist organization whose activities are prohibited in a number of countries, including Russia. This is confirmed by intelligence information conducting a special operation in Yemen.
“Unfortunately, this is very illogical. “It’s like banning all Britons from wearing shoes and all Nigerians from wearing underwear on a flight just because their nationality was once able to smuggle a bomb in those items of clothing,” Singer said.
The US Federal Aviation Administration has banned the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone from transport due to several cases of spontaneous combustion; e-cigarettes, drone batteries and hoverboards have suffered the same fate. But in none of these cases were the restrictions limited to certain countries while the rest of the world was allowed to flout the ban.

In law Order of the Ministry of Transport of Russia dated June 28, 2007 No. 82 (as amended on January 14, 2019) “On approval of the Federal Aviation Rules “General rules for the air transportation of passengers, baggage, cargo and requirements for servicing passengers, shippers, consignees”” (registered with the Ministry of Justice of Russia on September 27 .2007 No. 10186)
In any Russian airline you can carry up to 5 kg of things on board for free. There are carriers that allow you to take 10 or 15 kg.
As a rule, the more expensive the ticket, the more things you can carry in the cabin. Typically, for economy class flights, one piece of hand luggage is provided, and for business class flights, two. But here everything depends on the carrier: some companies have their own standards for each fare, route, aircraft, while others have a single standard for everyone.
Dimensions are not specified in the law, so each carrier can set its own rules. Typically, bags with dimensions of 55 × 40 × 20 cm or with the sum of three dimensions equal to 115 cm are allowed on board. Such a suitcase will fit in the overhead luggage rack along with the hand luggage of other passengers.
You can also take a handbag, briefcase or backpack with things in excess of the norm. It is assumed that you will place them under the seat in front, so the permitted weight and dimensions may be less than for carry-on luggage. For example, up to 3 kg and no more than 80 cm in the sum of three dimensions.
Carefully read the rules on the company’s website: if the weight of free excess baggage is not indicated there, check this on the website or by phone.
Also, instead of an additional bag, briefcase or backpack, you can take for free:
- bouquet of flowers;
- outerwear;
- baby food for the child during the flight;
- suit in a suitcase (check weight and dimensions);
- a device for carrying a child (cradle, chair, stroller) - provided that you are flying with a child and can fit these things on a shelf or under the seat;
- medications, special dietary needs in the amount required for the duration of the flight;
- crutches, canes, walkers, rollators, a folding wheelchair, if you can fit them in the cabin on a shelf or under the seat;
- goods from Duty Free, if they are suitable in weight and dimensions and are sealed in a sealed bag (check weight and dimensions).
The basic rule: what you are going to take into the cabin must fit on a shelf or under the seat. Ask the carrier in advance how much excess hand luggage he will allow you to carry.
How to check hand luggage at the airport
If your hand luggage looks bulky, it will be weighed at the airport and the dimensions will be checked using a special frame. This is a plastic container or two walls that your suitcase should fit into. In this case, everything should fit in, including handles and wheels.

To avoid having to pay extra for hand luggage, choose soft bags or a backpack with drawstring straps that reduce the size of the already packed travel accessory.
The task of any airline is not just to deliver a passenger from point A to point B on schedule, but to do it as safely and comfortably as possible. It is worth noting that Their own lives and health depend on the behavior of the passengers themselves. It is no secret that many compatriots, out of stupidity, ignorance, or even on purpose, sometimes manage to carry on the plane seemingly obviously dangerous and therefore prohibited items that can affect the success of the flight.
This does not happen without incidents, and airlines are introducing more and more new rules for the carriage of baggage on passenger planes. Let's try to figure out the main sins of unfortunate passengers, so that on the next flight we don't accidentally join their ranks.
Looking at the pages of air carriers from all over the world, we will see approximately the same a list of what is prohibited from being carried in luggage on an airplane. It looks something like this:
- magnetized substances and objects;
- any explosives and firearms (pistols, shotguns, machine guns, other types and ammunition, including empty cartridges and detonators; fireworks, signal flares and similar products);
- all types of gases: compressed, poisonous, flammable and others;
- objects and substances (solid, liquid, gaseous) that can spontaneously ignite (solvents, paints, lighter refills, etc.);
- substances that emit gases after contact with water or air;
- substances that oxidize or lead to corrosion. As an example, bleaching powder. In addition, alkalis, acids, mercury and devices that contain it, batteries with liquid elements;
- radioactive substances or objects that emit radiation;
- toxic and poisonous substances;
- infectious substances (herbicides, pesticides, any laboratory samples that contain live viruses or harmful bacteria, as well as insecticides).
Very often, company employees strongly It is NOT recommended to check such important personal items as luggage on the plane, such as precious metals, jewelry, securities, money, important house and office keys, glasses, various fragile items, passports and other identification documents, medical certificates, laptop computers and other electronic devices, musical instruments, paintings, etc. As well as perishable products. Air baggage rules do not prohibit putting all these items in your suitcase, but it is logical and safer to keep them with you in your carry-on luggage.
Even in modern conditions, no one is immune from human or machine error. And a suitcase with such necessary items can easily leave on another plane in a completely opposite direction.
And thefts in airport luggage compartments still occur, especially in third world countries. As for the products, then Due to temperature changes, perishable food has every chance of spoiling even faster.
Samsung Galaxy Note owners (if there are any left) may also be disappointed by the flight rules. This gadget is prohibited on airplanes. Airlines are simply afraid that it will explode in flight. Unfortunately, there were precedents in the past. Sometimes you are allowed to take it in hand luggage, but only after turning off and removing the battery.
Electronic cigarettes and vapes. Features and nuances
Compatriots-smokers who have switched to electronic cigarettes - vapes (from the English verb “vape”, which is pronounced “vape” and means “smoking steam”, one of the types of electronic cigarettes) should know what they cannot put in luggage on a plane the subject of their addiction. This rule is increasingly appearing on the official websites of airlines (check the permissible limits for vaping liquids in checked and carry-on luggage with the specific carrier), and at the check-in counter the passenger will probably be unobtrusively asked about its availability.
This is because electronic cigarettes often run on lithium batteries. And they can only be carried in the cabin of the plane in hand luggage. And after recording several incidents in which the heating elements of electronic cigarettes were accidentally activated and led to a fire in the luggage compartments, vaping finally became a ban in every company that respects itself and its passengers.
First aid kit and medicines. Can everything be carried?
Most often, in the official information received from your air carrier, you will learn that narcotic and psychotropic drugs are strictly prohibited on board the aircraft. Even if they are allowed in the country you are flying from or in the country you are flying to. But it happens that some components of some medications may be on the list of prohibited drugs - in this case, you must have a prescription from your doctor who prescribed certain sleeping pills, antidepressants or cough medicines. But such medicines do not go in the luggage compartment; they should be transported in hand luggage.
Any first aid kit that contains over-the-counter medications should be included in your regular baggage. along with the receipts for which they were purchased. It is better to put all medications in a transparent box or bag. The farther away and more securely the medicine is hidden, the more questions inspectors may have when they find it.
Please pay special attention to the information that in some countries even a doctor’s prescription is not a prerequisite for the import of a particular medicine if its components are defined by law as prohibited.
Be sure to check this information with the embassy of the country you are flying to.
Many medical devices, equipment and special substances require prior approval from the air carrier. For example, you will be denied transportation of liquid oxygen in cylinders. But oxygen cylinders for medical use in a gaseous state will be allowed to be transported only in the cabin after prior permission and inspection.
Forewarned is forearmed. Responsibility for “wrong” baggage
The conditions for carrying baggage on a plane on a particular airline are not a closely guarded secret. It so happens that certain types of luggage can sometimes be processed differently. In many European low-cost airlines, a baby stroller is not included in the concept of baggage if it is used for its intended purpose while traveling, and airline employees allow it to be carried absolutely free of charge.
The only thing that differs is the rules for accepting this type of transport for children - you can hand it over right at the entrance to the plane, or you can hand it over along with the main suitcase at the airport to the belt. But seasoned travelers have encountered airlines that billed their child's stroller as one piece of luggage instead of a designated suitcase. If a novice tourist does not know these rules, then he risks paying a significant amount for a stroller, like another piece of luggage that has not been checked in advance right at the airport.
Air transportation is a delicate and responsible matter. Although each company tries to adhere to the general course, maintaining solidarity with competitors and colleagues with regard to generally accepted norms. It's one thing to misregister your skis or snowboard. But the situation is completely different if they find in their suitcases something prohibited for transportation on an airplane (be it a regular or a charter flight), for example, a jar of caustic acid or a test tube with a virus.
In the best case, the item will be confiscated, and you will fly without it. In the worst case, law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies will come to the aid of airport security workers. And if a substance, drug or item is on the illegal list, then the trip will most likely be interrupted, and further communication will be with the police.
What can and cannot be carried in airplane luggage in Russia?
Russian airlines adhere to a general list of prohibited items on board the aircraft. Nevertheless, some nuances exist.
Weapon
You can check in the cargo compartment with edged weapons: crossbows, checkers, sabers, cutlasses, scimitars, broadswords, swords, swords, bayonets, daggers, knives: hunting knives, knives with ejectable blades and with locking locks. As well as spearguns, dummies and simulators of any type of weapon.
Firearms can be transported if there is official permission to store and carry them. Before the flight, inform in advance about the carriage of such “baggage” and go through the verification procedure.
You will have to arrive at the airport earlier, as this is discussed individually with the security service. Both weapons and ammunition must be locked in special containers. They are prohibited from being transported in the same baggage (container). And the gross weight of ammunition cannot exceed 5 kg.
Animals
Your pet will not travel for free on the plane as baggage: you'll have to pay for his flight too. The only exception may be guide dogs as accompanying a visually impaired person. The rules also talk about mandatory documents for a pet.
The website of Russia’s main air carrier, Aeroflot, says that “The luggage compartment provides for the transportation of animals (birds) whose weight with the container exceeds 8 kg. Dogs belonging to potentially dangerous breeds (guard, aggressive, fighting) are transported only in the luggage compartment in reinforced cages.”
I wonder what's there list of pets that are not accepted for transportation as baggage at all:
- dogs belonging to brachycephalic breeds: bulldog (English, French, American), pug, Pekingese, Shih Tzu, boxer, griffin (Belgian, Brussels), Boston terrier, Dogue de Bordeaux, Japanese chin;
- rodents;
- reptiles (snakes, lizards, etc.);
- arthropods (spiders, scorpions, etc.);
- fish and fish seeding material (live eggs, fry), as well as other sea and river animals that require transportation in water;
- animals and birds that are not indoors or tamed;
- sick and experimental animals;
- animals whose weight together with the container exceeds 50 kg.
Are hoverboards and Segways banned?
Not the vehicles specifically, but their lithium-ion batteries. They are removed from the device and transported separately, marked “Dangerous Goods” in accordance with the rules of each airline, and the device itself travels in the luggage compartment. If the battery cannot be removed, then a small vehicle for personal transportation requires special registration, if the carrier’s rules allow it.
Aeroflot what not to do; What you can’t take in hand luggage, what you can’t carry, what you can’t take on a plane, what you can’t take in your luggage on an airplane, Aeroflot hand luggage, Aeroflot, what’s prohibited, prohibited items
Frequently flying by plane, experienced travelers have memorized the list of items and things that are prohibited from being transported by this type of transport. Aeroflot has banned almost everything from being carried in hand luggage and luggage, as have many other companies.
The list of prohibited items and things is not new - everything that is on it threatens the safety of passengers on board the aircraft and their lives. Also, items and things that cannot be carried in hand luggage and Aeroflot baggage can cause damage to the aircraft itself, which resulted in prohibited sanctions.
Aeroflot what is not allowed: prohibited items and things 2020
- Flammable liquids
- Magnetized substances
- Compressed and liquefied gases
- Explosives and weapons
- Poisonous and toxic substances
- Toxic substances
- Flammable solids
- Radioactive materials
- Oxidizing agents and organic peroxides
- Caustic and corrosive substances
Laptop and mobile phone: not possible or possible
The list of prohibited items may also include things we love, without which we can no longer imagine our lives - laptops and mobile phones. They also run on lithium batteries.
What you can’t take in hand luggage on a plane new rules 2020 Aeroflot
But here Aeroflot made a reservation: both laptops and mobile phones can be carried in both hand luggage and checked luggage, but under one condition: they should be turned off(standby mode disabled) - this is not how a lithium battery works - and placed in special protective packaging, which will prevent them from being damaged or activated.
What cannot be carried in hand luggage
- weapons and ammunition
- gels, aerosols, liquids in containers larger than 100 ml, including our favorite jam and honey
- highly flammable liquids - varnishes (including hairspray), sprays (shoe sprays), etc.
- carbon dioxide (CO2) cartridges
- alcoholic drinks (cognac, wine, vodka, etc.), except for Duty Free alcohol (in a special bag, sealed)
However, this does not mean that they cannot be transported on board Aeroflot aircraft at all. For some items there is a special transportation regime: for example, if you are going to transport weapons (cold steel, firearms), ammunition and electric shock devices, they must be registered additionally, according to a special procedure. Transportation will be carried out separately from luggage. And gels, shampoos, hair sprays, shaving foam( all items - without danger signs on the packaging), alcoholic drinks can be safely packed into luggage and checked into the luggage compartment.
What can be carried on a plane in hand luggage: special items that are allowed in hand luggage
Quite often, many passengers think that items from the list below are prohibited for transportation because they are dangerous. In fact, this is not so - these items can be carried in hand luggage, but they must be packed correctly:
- Medical thermometer (not mercury).
- Mercury tonometer - 1 unit. for 1 passenger (in a standard case).
- A mercury barometer or thermometer must be packed in an airtight container and sealed with the sender's seal.
- Disposable lighters - 1 pc. for 1 passenger.
- Dry ice - no more than 2 kg (used to cool products).
- Hydrogen peroxide (concentration 3%) - no more than 100 ml per 1 passenger.
How much liquid can be carried in hand luggage, and how much cannot?
As required by Aeroflot transportation rules, the total volume of all liquids packed in 100 ml containers and collected in one bag must not exceed 1 liter (carriage allowance per 1 passenger).
What cannot be carried in luggage
- ammunition, weapons, gunpowder
- explosives, products
- petrol and gas lighters
- gasoline and gas for lighters
- toxic substances, flammable substances
- unknown substances in containers not intended for retail sale
List of items and things prohibited for carriage both in hand luggage and checked baggage:
- small vehicles for personal mobility that run on lithium batteries
- dangerous substances, cargo and objects that can be used as a weapon of attack against passengers and aircraft crew
- substances that pose a threat to aircraft flight
What not to take on a plane
All items and things listed above have the right to be prohibited from being transported airport administration in the aircraft cabin. For example, in such a list, which is contained on the Aeroflot website, there are quite simple, common everyday items that we use in everyday life, but their transportation in the aircraft cabin may be prohibited by the administration of the airport, airline and operator:
- corkscrews
- hypodermic needles (unless medically warranted)
- knitting needles
- scissors with blade length less than 60 mm
- folding (without lock) travel, pocket knives (blade length less than 60 mm)
To avoid problems with check-in and boarding for your flight, it is better to discard these items on the road and do not take them with you into the aircraft cabin, including in your hand luggage.
Security screening at the airport
Screening at the airport is precisely the procedure during which airline employees can exclude items and items prohibited for transportation from luggage and hand luggage. The inspection procedure is set out in a special annex to the rules for pre-flight and post-flight inspections.
To ensure that passengers on board the aircraft feel safe, Aeroflot employees search passengers and baggage during check-in at the airport.
If requested by an Aeroflot employee, your baggage can be searched at check-in and/or at the boarding gate. A passenger who is presented with such a requirement is required to present hand luggage (1 piece) and some things that will be transported in the aircraft cabin (backpack, baby cradle, baby stroller) for weighing and inspection.
Hand luggage that exceeds the established standards (weight, size, quantity) for free carriage must be checked into the luggage compartment of the aircraft with an appropriate surcharge. Dangerous items and items prohibited for transportation will have to be left at the airport.
What can and cannot be taken with you on board an airplane? Is it possible to bring baby food, will you be allowed to carry a laptop, and will you be allowed on board with duty free purchases? Even experienced air travelers sometimes get confused about the rules for carrying hand luggage. Today, together with a service for selecting cheap air tickets, we will try to answer these and other questions.
First, let's define the terminology.
Carry-on luggage is the luggage that a passenger takes with him into the aircraft cabin without checking it into the luggage compartment.
Baggage is suitcases, bags, trunks and other things that are checked into the luggage compartment on the plane upon check-in and handed out after landing.
Dimensions and weight of hand luggage. The two main requirements that airlines have for carry-on luggage are size and weight. The average dimensions of hand luggage are 55 by 40 by 20 centimeters in length, width and height, or 115 centimeters in the sum of three dimensions. This calculation includes pockets, wheels and luggage handles. A bag with these dimensions will fit on the luggage rack above your head or under the seat in front of you. Low-cost airlines sometimes limit the size of hand luggage more severely. The standard weight of hand luggage is 5-10 kilograms. Regular airlines have more, low-cost airlines have less. Airlines have the right to slightly change the size of hand luggage depending on the aircraft for which such tickets are sold.
If your bag looks compact and light, then most likely no one will be interested in its size and weight at the airport. But if you have a bulky bag behind you, then at check-in, in front of the departure area and before the boarding gate, airline employees can:
1) weigh your hand luggage. If an excess is detected, then the excess items will have to be checked in as luggage (often with an additional charge) or you will have to pay for non-standard carry-on luggage. There may be a higher surcharge at the gate than at check-in;
2) put your hand luggage in a special frame to check the dimensions. If it comes in, take it to the salon. If it doesn't fit, check it in as your luggage, possibly with an extra charge.
Most travelers know that they should not take sharp or piercing objects into their hand luggage. In fact, there are much more differences related to the rules for boarding an airplane. Each airline has the right to establish its own rules for the carriage of hand luggage; for the convenience of passengers, a general list of things is established that are allowed or prohibited to take on board. Before packing for your trip, we advise you to familiarize yourself with this list. Therefore, it is better to go to the airline’s website and familiarize yourself with the transportation rules. Knowing these nuances will help save you time and nerves when going through security at the airport.
What can be carried in hand luggage:
Documents, airline tickets or boarding passes;
- Money;
- Bank cards;
- Medicines (in their original packaging, along with the package insert and doctor’s prescription);
- Small-sized gadgets: phone, tablet, laptop, camera;
- Jewelry;
- Baby food and baby care products (if your baby is traveling with you on vacation).
Of course, there are many things that are allowed in hand luggage, but some are subject to special rules.
Liquids. In total, you are allowed to carry 1 liter of liquids in containers of a maximum of 100 milliliters each. The volume of the container matters: a two-liter bottle with two sips of juice left in it will not be allowed through. All liquids must be placed in a clear zip-lock bag (such as a Ziploc bag for freezing fruit or a makeup bag) and presented for security screening if asked.
Liquids include:
Roll-on deodorants;
- shaving foam, shampoo, shower gel;
- toothpaste;
- perfumes and eau de toilette;
- tonic, makeup remover, cream, mascara;
- medications: eye, nasal and ear drops, solutions and tinctures for oral administration, products for external use, gels;
- some food products: soft cheese, yogurt, pate, jam, honey and so on.
Travelers with children under two years of age. Food for the child (mashed potatoes, milk, juices, formula) can be in packages of any size in the quantity required for the duration of the flight.
- Those who need to take medications regularly. In this case, you can take medications with you in packages larger than 100 milliliters, but do not forget to bring a certificate from your doctor.
Food. With regular airlines you don’t have to worry about food: you will at least be offered a snack, and on long flights you will be served hot food. For low-cost airlines, only the flight itself is included in the ticket price; everything else is for an additional fee. Therefore, if you are flying a low-cost airline and do not want to spend money on expensive in-flight meals, take food with you. For example, apples, nuts, dried fruits, soft cookies, buns, muesli bars, sandwiches. All this is convenient to have a snack on the road, and no one will have any questions at the airport.
Important!
Place your laptop and other equipment, as well as gadgets and a bag of liquids on top, so that you can quickly get it out during security. Your neighbors and airport employees will be grateful to you.
Place everything valuable in your hand luggage: documents, money, jewelry, equipment. And don't forget to watch your backpack at the airport, of course.
Don't forget to bring a phone charger, warm clothes, medications you take regularly, and a light snack in case your flight is delayed.
Make sure you don't accidentally put anything on the list of prohibited items. Safety standards vary from country to country and even from airport to airport. Be sure to check them out on the airport and airline website. It would also be a good idea to study the customs regulations of the country where you are flying.
If you are flying with a low-cost airline, do not fill your backpack to the limit. By leaving an empty space inside, you can compact it a little and fit it into a frame with which you can check the dimensions.
Weigh your assembled backpack or suitcase at home and make sure it meets airline standards. If the excess is discovered already at the airport, you can put on some of the clothes packed in your hand luggage, put heavy small items in your pockets, or pick up a camera or an e-book, if the carrier allows it.
What can you take on a plane in addition to hand luggage? In addition to the established carry-on baggage allowance, you can usually take additional items of baggage with you on the plane:
A ladies' handbag or a men's briefcase;
- Folder for papers;
- Gadgets and equipment for work/tourism: phone, tablet, laptop, camera and video camera;
- Umbrella;
- Cane;
- Outerwear, suit in a case;
- Printed publications (for reading during the flight);
- For a small child: baby food, cradle;
- Crutches;
- Packaged from Duty Free.
Weapons and everything that looks like them (if you have a fashionable accessory in the form of a grenade or pistol, they may be taken away);
Piercing and cutting objects (this includes everything, even something that you would not even think of using as a weapon to cause pain to another person, for example, knitting needles);
Gas cartridges;
Toxic substances.
A full list of prohibited items is often indicated directly on the ticket. If this list is not there, go to the airline's website and check out the full list there.
Please note: the list of items and items in excess of hand luggage is established by the air carrier. You can rely on the most general list provided, but before your flight you will still have to check the list on the airline’s website. Do not forget about the specifics of low-cost airlines: low-cost airlines often have restrictions on the carriage of hand luggage.
