Where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean Sea, 3 at a distance of 37 km from the city of Cancun, lies the small uninhabited island of Cantoy. The attractiveness of this place is due to its pristine nature, which is vigilantly protected. The number of visitors to the island is strictly limited, only 3 times a week in groups of 200 people. While visiting, you are not allowed to fish, play loud music, or swim with sunscreen on. Such precautions protect the island’s ecosystem, since 152 species of birds nest in its small territory, sea turtles live, and there are endemic plants. Walking along the beaches, you can see female stingrays up close and even photograph them in clear water.
The views of pristine beaches, whitecaps along the barrier reef in the south of the island, wild palm forest and mangroves are mesmerizing. The grandeur and beauty of miraculous landscapes amazes you.
Since tourists constantly visit the island, there is a very small museum and souvenir shop for them.
To support this national park, tourists on the island are charged a fee of 65 pesos.
In the Caribbean Sea, 11 km from Cancun, there is the Island of Women. It is separated from the coast by the Strait of Mujeres. The length of the island is about 8 km, and the width is 500 m. The name of the island appeared in 1517, when the first conquistadors discovered here many stone sculptures of the goddess Ixchel. The ancient Mayans revered her as the patroness of fertility, medicine, happiness and the moon. The island is replete with pirate buildings, castles and Mayan ruins.
In the north of the island there are sandy beaches, including the magnificent Playa Norte, and the south ends in the sea with rocky outcroppings. Garrafon-Punta Sur Park remains an excellent place to visit. This is a national park on the west coast of the island where the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is located. The reef itself and its inhabitants can be perfectly viewed while snorkeling, fishing or swimming with dolphins. This activity, like the time spent on the beach, will be remembered for peace and relaxation.
You can get to the Island of Women by boat, which departs every 30 minutes, from the Punta en Cancun pier from the Cancun hotel zone for $8.5 US.
The idea of creating an underwater museum belongs to sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor. Inspired by the legend of Atlantis and the need to create a basis for the growth of coral reefs, the sculptor created 400 reinforced concrete figures. The installation is located off the coast of Punta Cancun, Punta Nisus and Manchones Reef. It can be observed by snorkeling or scuba diving, or from a glass-bottomed pleasure boat. Annually underwater museum visited by 750,000 visitors.

Royal ruins located in Cancun on the territory of the Otelera Lagoon. Disputes among scientists about the origin of the buildings continue unabated all the time. They are attributed to the ancient astronomical observatory of the Mayans, and to the tomb of the royal family, and to a religious building. The latter version is supported by images of skeletons on the walls of the pyramid. The buildings date back to 200 BC, and were discovered in the 16th century. It is unusual that Del Rey has two main squares and two central streets; in other Mayan cities there is always one central square. One of the pyramids contains ancient frescoes.

- Mayan pyramids, the second largest coral reef in the world, endless beaches and even more endless nights - this is a brief description of Cancun as it appears to tourists. It is a real magnet for divers, fishing fans, history buffs and pleasure seekers.
The beaches of Cancun are so attractive that once you see them, you seriously risk being left without any other attractions: you won’t want to leave. You can snorkel right from the water's edge at Playa Tortugas to admire the colorful native fish and marine plants. “Playa Delfines” speaks for itself by its name: here, diving into the water with scuba gear, you can swim with the smartest creatures on Earth. Right off the coast is Aquaworld, where all kinds of water activities in the bay are available. And in the hotel area, just a few minutes’ walk from many resort complexes, there is the interactive Cancun Aquarium, where you can get up close and personal not only with dolphins, but also with sea lions and even sharks.
A river flows through Xcaret Park, in the sea coral reefs and dolphins, manats and turtles await guests, and on land there are butterflies in the pavilion, bats in the cave, jaguars on the island and orchids in the greenhouse.
For those who are not satisfied with this, there is a direct road to Isla Mujeres, a small island not far from the coast. This place is less affected by the modern tourism industry, and here you can feel like a pioneer of the jungle in the Garrafon Natural Reef Park, or simply relax on one of the calm beaches. The island can be reached by ferry from the central city beach.
Another city amusement park is the Xcaret theme park. Its organizers are proud to have created something like an eco-version of Disneyland. Here, visitors will find natural and cultural attractions: a river flows through the park, between the Mayan buildings, in which you can swim; in the sea, coral reefs and dolphins, manats and turtles await guests, and on land - butterflies in the pavilion, bats in a cave, jaguars on the island and orchids in the greenhouse. There are plenty of activities on offer: there is a replica of a Mayan village, a colorful Mexican cemetery and a Flying Man, and Indian show ceremonies take place daily - on a scale worthy of Vegas.
If, nevertheless, your intentions to get the most out of the cultural program on vacation are firm, go to one of the archaeological zones, of which there are quite a few in the vicinity of Cancun. The closest is El Meco, which is only 8 km from the city center and almost on the coast. A little further, but closer to the hotel area, is El Rey. Both sites contain Mayan stone structures, including small pyramids. If you are looking for something more monumental, you should go to Chichen Itza or Tulum, but be prepared for the fact that everyone needs to go there.
In the city of Cancun itself there is unlikely to be much of anything historical or interesting against which you could take a photo. For this reason, in 2014, the city put up a “Cancun” sign - like the Hollywood one, only with multi-colored letters. The plan worked: at least 4,000 people visit the sign every day. It can be found in a place that Cancun residents simply call "El Mirador" - it is located at 18.5 km of the hotel zone.
- Where to stay: in one of the hotels in groovy Cancun, on the miniature island of Isla Mujeres or in the paradise of Cozumel, which is famous for its rich underwater world. Family tourists should pay attention to the Riviera Maya and its most popular resort - Playa del Carmen, which combines the cheeky atmosphere of a youth party and discreet European chic.
- Where to go: must-see - mysterious pyramids
If you want to get to know the sights of Cancun and all of Mexico in as much detail as possible, we recommend getting a guidebook or using the services of a guide from your tour operator. A complete list of attractions in Cancun and Mexico can be found on the page “,” where there is a detailed description of each interesting place in Cancun and its surroundings, its photographs and reviews of tourists who have been there. Based on them, a rating of attractions in Cancun and throughout Mexico is compiled, which will help you choose the most interesting of them. So:
- The most mysterious and interesting place in Mexico is, of course, the famous Mayan pyramids. Most of them have been preserved (Chichen Itza), which translated means the city of the Water Sorcerers. The magnificent architecture conceals the mystery of the great art of the ancient Mayan civilization.
- Another no less interesting place is (Tulum), the only Mayan seaport-fortress. Tulum rises above the sea on a hill, and the city of Coba is also located nearby. It was formerly a Mayan trading city. In bad weather, as well as at night, the main pyramid of the city served as a beacon for those sailing in galleys. Tulum is one of the most famous archaeological sites on the coast of the state of Quintana Roo. The sightseeing tour will take an hour and a half.
- Another place visited by tourists is (Isla Mujeres). It is believed that everyone who comes to Cancun should visit this island, located not far from the city. He likes to sunbathe top-less, because in Cancun itself this is prohibited. This is the place for seafood lovers. And also for souvenir lovers. They are cheaper here than in Cancun. But the main attraction of the Island of Women is the park (Garrafon-Punta Sur Park), surrounded by the sea.
- Another popular island among tourists is (Cozumel). On the island of Cozumel there is a large number of Mayan pantheons, their temples with towers. The island is also home to the Chankanaab National Park, which means “small sea” in the Mayan language - a national reservation. The park houses an evergreen botanical garden where tourists can see more than 350 varieties of local vegetation.
- (Xel-Ha) is the only seaport of the Mayan people, from where today there is a stunning panorama of the Caribbean Sea. The Mayans lived here in the eighth century. Now it is an ecological national park, where tourists can enjoy the silence of nature, the majestic beauty of the underwater world - crystal clear water of the temperature of fresh milk, exotic fish that amaze the imagination with their unusual colors awaits guests.
The botanical garden was created in 1982 by Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin and is perhaps one of the largest botanical gardens in Mexico.
The garden has a huge collection consisting of rare species of trees, ferns, ornamental and medicinal plants, cacti growing on the Yucatan Peninsula.
The main task of the botanical garden is to preserve endangered representatives of the local flora.
The length of the excursion route through the botanical garden is 4 kilometers. The route passes along picturesque natural formations and traditional Mayan houses, as well as archaeological sites.
Folk Art Museum
The Folk Art Museum is a treasure trove of Mexican crafts.
The museum, which local residents are so proud of, is an integral part of all tourist programs. Its collection contains more than 2,000 items that allow you to learn more about the way of life of the local population. The exhibits on display were collected from all over Mexico.
The exhibition, presented on three floors of the building, is divided into 5 thematic halls: “The Origins of Mexican Art”, “The Origins of Folk Crafts”, “Household Objects”, “Religious Objects” and “Magical Objects”. A playroom has been created for young museum visitors, where you can also see masterpieces of Mexican art.

Beaches of Cancun
The beaches of Cancun are several popular Mexican beaches, the total length of which is more than twenty-two kilometers. All Cancun beaches can be divided into two groups: safe for swimming and beaches for extreme sports. Safe beaches for swimming are located in the northern part of Cancun. The island of Isla Mujeres protects them from large waves. Couples often come here to relax and swim in the warm sea. This area has clean white sand and occasional shells. The “Turtle” and “Pearl” beaches are especially popular.
Beaches for extreme sports are located in the western part of Cancun. The area usually experiences strong waves. During a storm, their height reaches five meters. Therefore, experienced swimmers prefer to swim on such beaches. You can often see surfers here. A team of rescuers and medical workers is constantly on duty on the beaches. Typically, tourists vacationing in this area prefer Dolphin Beach.
Church of the Holy Family is a Catholic church in Cancun. It has simple architecture and many parishioners who come here every Saturday and Sunday.
The temple also hosts weddings, christenings, presentations and other events.
Cancun airport
Cancun International Airport ranks last among the five largest airports in Latin America. In recent years, its passenger turnover has exceeded 12 million people. The airport is actively developing and in the near future may well become the largest in all of Mexico.
Cancun Airport has 47 gates and three terminals. The airport operates daily flights to countries in European America, as well as to European countries. The largest number of flights is carried out in directions to Mexican cities.
Holbos Island
This island is simply a treasure trove of miraculous natural scenic attractions. It is separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon, where beautiful exotic birds like to settle - flamingos, pelicans and others, and near the island you can see dolphins almost all year round. The water washing the shores of the island changes its color depending on the wind direction from bright green to turquoise blue. There is practically no motor transport here, and people travel by golf carts or mopeds.
There are no special attractions on the island, but the main recreation is water sports - kite surfing, kayaking, lying in a hammock in the shade of palm trees and admiring the beauty of the ocean. The main attraction that attracts tourists from all over the world is swimming with whale sharks.
And for especially romantic natures, nature has prepared another attraction - amazingly beautiful sunsets and sunrises, which can be observed every day from the beach.

Cozumel Airport
Cozumel International Airport is located on the Mexican island of the same name in the Caribbean Sea.
Despite the fact that the island's population barely reaches 100 thousand people, the airport's annual passenger turnover is 400 thousand passengers. This is facilitated by the resort status of the island and the presence of a huge coral reef with a length of 700 kilometers.
After extensive restoration work in 2003, Cozumel Airport introduced 6 new gates. The terminals were also updated and the waiting rooms were redecorated.
