Where to go and what to see in Montenegro with children? Montenegro Excursion in Montenegro with a child
And I still can’t finish writing everything I planned to write about our last year’s trip to this warm and cozy country. I will try very hard to make today’s post useful for young parents who, like us a year ago, decided to go to Montenegro with a small child. Our Tisha was 7 months old at the time of the trip and this was his first big trip.
The most important thing that I would like to note is that all the participants of the trip: both Tikhon and his parents, really liked the country. It seems to me that this is an almost ideal option for a holiday at sea with a baby: the flight is not far, the climate is mild, the infrastructure is quite developed, the products are familiar. And a lot more, which I’ll tell you about below.
Let's talk about choosing a place to live. We traveled around the country a little, toured the Bay of Kotor, visited several cities, and came to the conclusion that the best place to live with a small child in Montenegro is Budva. I'll try to describe why. First of all, it is easy to move with a stroller, which is very important for young parents. Sidewalks, traffic lights, ramps at intersections - not all Montenegrin resorts have all this, but they do in Budva.
There are also plenty of places in Budva for walking with your baby. There is a long, long Budva embankment and a small quiet park. If you wish, you can also walk to the neighboring villages of Becici or Rafailovichi. Even with a stroller, you will have absolutely no difficulties.
This is us on a walk in Budva Park. It is very small, but still far from the beach and the road, the place is quiet and pleasant.
If children have already grown up and active games are relevant, then, as in any other country, playgrounds come to the rescue. And again, there are many of them in Budva, according to our subjective assessment, more than in other cities. There are playgrounds right on the beach.
And just like ours, in the courtyards of residential buildings.
Well, perhaps I’ll also add about the shops of Budva, both in the center and on the outskirts of the city there are a lot of very decent supermarkets that have a large selection of goods for babies: diapers, baby cosmetics, baby food and the like. There are also small markets where you can always buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
In general, it seemed to us that Budva was simply created for living and relaxing with children. Perhaps this is where its advantages end, so I will also discuss the topic of holidays with children in Montenegro in general.
Flight. The flight from Moscow to Tivat or Podgorica takes about 3.5 hours. What immediately catches your eye is the number of children on board. There are especially many very young children; apparently many parents agree with us that Montenegro is an excellent holiday option with babies.
Housing. The main type of housing for rent in Montenegro is apartments, apartment-type rooms, which have everything you need, including a kitchen. Which is much more convenient than standard hotel rooms if you have children. We rented an ordinary apartment and generally felt at home.
Products and food. Better than at home :) No, really! This is something you definitely shouldn't worry about. The products in cafes and shops are of very high quality, the cuisine in the establishments is delicious, fruits and vegetables are local, fresh and very tasty.
Beaches. Overall I really liked the Adriatic. The beaches vary from sandy to large pebbles, mostly very picturesque and comfortable.
– excellent opportunities for a beach holiday on the Adriatic coast combined with a rich and vibrant excursion component. You can relax here in different ways, successfully combining business with pleasure.
Each coastal resort is ideal for a relaxing holiday on wonderful beaches. But inquisitive young tourists will certainly want to go on interesting hikes in the mountains, natural parks, mountain rivers and lakes.
They will also enjoy exploring ancient architectural monuments, ancient monasteries, and beautiful resort towns. Original Montenegro is a country that cannot be fully explored unless you go on excursions.
Small, beautiful Montenegro (its population is just over 600 thousand people) is very rich in attractions. To see everything, you will need a trip of at least two weeks. But if you wish, you can explore the most interesting tourist sites in three or four days.
Traveling around Montenegro with children on your own is not difficult. The roads in the country are good, the buses are mostly new and equipped with air conditioning.
It is convenient to start your bus journey from the Budva bus station. From here you can reach almost every attraction. Travel time to the city of Ulcinj (the southernmost point of Montenegro) is approximately 2 hours.
Almost the same amount will be spent on travel if you go to the north of the country to the tiny resort of Igalo (close to the Croatian border and the city of Herceg Novi).
To the capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, the road along a mountain serpentine inland will take approximately 1.5 hours, to the old capital of Montenegro - Cetinje - about an hour, to the mountain resort of Zabljaka (the furthest from the coast) - more than 4 hours.
Sights of Montenegro
Large Montenegrin resorts offer a lot of entertainment for little tourists. These include visiting a water park, mobile attractions of Luna parks, museums, and entertainment centers. But, probably, what they might find most interesting are fascinating excursions through the dense forests of the Black Mountains, ancient castles and medieval fortresses, perfectly preserved to this day, as well as boat trips around miniature islands.
City tours
The country is diverse and multifaceted: small resort villages located on the coast are not at all like villages lost in the mountains. Having visited the Adriatic Sea, it would be a sin not to get acquainted with its coast from Budva to Ulcinj, wander through the streets of cozy ancient towns, admire ancient buildings and natural monuments.
Let's start our excursion route around Montenegro from the tourist center - the city of Budva. It is not only the most popular beach resort. This is the oldest city on the Adriatic coast, which was ruled by the Venetians from the 15th to the 18th centuries, who built powerful walls and fortresses to protect against the Turks.
Old Budva – a classic example of a medieval old town - Stari Grad. Life has not yet stopped in the sandstone buildings with a five-hundred-year history, located on the winding streets. They house shops, travel agencies, cafes, and some are even inhabited by people who calmly open the shutters every morning and sip aromatic coffee on the steps of their rare home.
All tourists who find themselves in Montenegro strive to visit Old Budva. The fabulous atmosphere of a medieval city with ancient temples and churches, with the best examples of Venetian architecture, unique residential buildings, cobbled winding streets, the aroma of strong coffee and fresh Mediterranean pastries with the indescribable smell of special spices makes you come back here again and again.
Old Budva is not only powerful fortress walls that protected the city’s small population from Turkish invasions. Its main pride is the Citadel or the medieval fortress of St. Mary (begun to be built in the 9th century) with a stunning observation deck, which offers a beautiful view of the sea, the old city with orange brick roofs and the nearest islands.
On the territory of the Citadel you can visit the Maritime Museum, the library, which contains ancient books telling about the history of the Balkans, a secluded restaurant or an open-air theater where chamber concerts of ancient music, theatrical improvisations, festivals are held, and national children's ensembles perform.
The Archaeological Museum with a collection of exhibits from the 4th-5th centuries BC, the Gallery of Modern Art, and a large number of Catholic and Orthodox temples and churches also deserve attention. Another attraction inside the Old Town is a small antique market, where you can buy an original and original souvenir as a keepsake.
Attractions and entertainment in Bar
Immersed in the greenery of olive groves and orchards, the Bar is divided into New and Old.
In Old Bar, surrounded by a powerful fortress wall, with narrow picturesque streets, you can admire the mosques and ruins of the old city, a stone aqueduct, a clock tower - all this is a legacy of more than 300 years of rule of the Ottoman Empire.
From the fortress walls of Old Bar you can see panoramic views of New Bar, the sea and the port. The main attraction of the open-air museum is the palace complex of King Nikola, which today houses a local history museum.
New Bar, located at the edge of the sea, is a modern resort town. Its attractions are the Church of St. Nicholas, the monument to the liberators of Bar, and the residence of the Catholic Archbishop.
Sights of the Bay of Kotor
In the Bay of Kotor, time with children flies by, alternating during the day between relaxing on the hot sand in the warm water of the bay with visiting historical buildings and boat trips along the stunningly beautiful bay.
It is not difficult to get to ancient Kotor, protected by UNESCO, with children, and it is also easy to climb to the highest point of the ancient fortress along the stone steps, on which a thousand-year history is imprinted.
Kotor (a city built before our era), hidden at the very end of a winding and narrow bay, with a fortress on a hill, is a real living city, and not a museum at all, which can offer a lot of interesting tourist sites: churches and cathedrals of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, powerful towers, fortress walls, princely palaces and mansions.
There is an opinion among tourists: if you have not been to the Bay of Kotor, consider that you have not been to Montenegro. It is impossible not to see the fortress of St. Ivan, the Sea Gate, and the city market.
Near Kotor there are towns in the Bay of Kotor with beautiful houses with red tiled roofs, island churches, a collection of Roman mosaics in Risan, and luxurious Baroque villas in Perast.
Herceg Novi – a tiny town located on the hills at the entrance to the bay at the very beginning of the Bay of Kotor. The most beautiful and green, simply drowning among rare plants arriving from different parts of the world, attracting with natural and architectural attractions.
It is also known as the “Botanical Garden of Montenegro” due to the growth of relict plants and trees in these places. You can get here by bus or by sea from the piers in Budva. Tivat Airport is 30 kilometers away.
The city was founded more than a thousand years ago. It was destroyed to the ground more than once and was reborn again. This is probably why many medieval architectural monuments have been preserved here: the fortresses of Arza, Forte Mare, Kanli Kula - Bloody Tower, Spaniola, the Mamula prison island, colorful old houses, a clock tower, the Orthodox Church of St. Michael the Archangel, the Savina monastery, an ancient fountain Karacha in the city center, maritime museum.
As part of the boat tour, you can visit the Blue Cave with amazingly colored water and the former presidential beach Zhanitsa.
Tivat
Many tourists consider Tivat as their arrival point to the country because of the airport located here. In fact, it is also a conveniently located resort with good beaches and interesting places to visit.
Of the significant ancient attractions, this is perhaps the only medieval Buča castle (the summer residence of the Luković and Buča families) in the city center.
Cetinje
If you go inland away from the coast, you can visit the cozy, unhurried old Montenegrin capital Cetinje with many museums (folk, ethnographic, art gallery and others), see part of the Cross of the Lord and the right hand of John the Baptist in the Cetinje monastery (this may be interesting for Orthodox believers ).
Ostrog Monastery
Ostrog Monastery is perhaps the most important Orthodox shrine in Montenegro. To see the temple carved on a steep rock in a cave, you will need to climb to the Upper Monastery, which is located a kilometer above sea level. Monks still live in the monastery, but it is also open to tourists.
It’s probably impossible to get here on your own (there are no regular buses, it’s a bit far to walk from the nearest stop). The only option is an organized excursion.
Excursions to natural attractions
The fantastic natural park "Durmitor" in the continental part of Montenegro is amazing. This is a huge area where you can swim in the cold water of the mountain Black Lake, wander along forest paths and paved hiking trails, inhaling the aroma of pine forests and ripe strawberries, admire the canyon of the Tara River and Lake Skadar, on the banks of which there is a whole scattering of ancient monasteries and medieval fortresses .
Those who are more resilient and well equipped (trekking shoes will be required) can push themselves and overcome Bobotov Kuk (the highest point of Montenegro and the top of the Durmitor massif in the Dinaric Highlands).
Lake Skadar is another site that is advisable to visit with a child. This is a very large body of clear water, rich in rare fish, pelicans, cormorants, inhabited by many birds, with shallow coastal waters buried in thickets of yellow water lilies and water lilies.
You can take an unforgettable trip around the lake by renting a boat. Along the way, you can swim, walk around the islands, watch the living creatures living here, and even fish to your heart’s content.
Teenagers will be interested not only in getting to know the wild nature of Durmitor, but also, once in these places, visiting the unique Piva Monastery, seeing churches, historical monuments, fortresses, majestic ruins, and the famous Djurdzhevich Bridge.
Djurdjevic Bridge and Tara River Canyon
The beautiful Djurdjevic Bridge offers an impressive view of the Tara River canyon - the largest in Europe.
This unique natural complex is included in the UNESCO list. In winter, skiers flock here in droves.
The mountains in Montenegro deserve special epithets. Not far from Kotor in the southwest of the country is one of the symbols of Montenegro - Mount Lovcen, which majestically rises above the Bay of Kotor, and a national park with the same name.
The path to the top, where the mausoleum of the outstanding statesman, poet and thinker Peter II Njeguš is located, runs along a breathtaking serpentine with various landscapes flashing outside the car window. The very end of the path must be walked, climbing 461 steps.
From the observation deck located behind the Njegus Mausoleum, you have excellent views of almost the entire small Montenegro.
Advice: when going to the mountains, take light jackets and windbreakers. It can be cool there even in summer.
Water activities in Montenegro
Rafting with children on the Tara River
The lands of the Durmitor Nature Reserve are dotted with deep cracks in the canyons of the Tara, Nevedio, Draga, Sushtitsa rivers, breathtaking in their views.
On Tara, you can take children from the age of seven on a dizzying “steep” rafting trip along the winding river. This extreme fun water route is designed specifically for children and is completely safe.
But there are so many emotions, delight and indescribable sensations. At stops in quiet creeks you can take a break and take great pictures as a souvenir. And after performing feats on the river among the greenery and silky grass, have a delicious lunch of roast veal at a picnic.
It will take about four hours to get to the canyon along a mountain serpentine road: with an excursion, on your own by car or by public transport to the town of Zabljak, having previously agreed on a transfer to the Tara area.
Boat trip along the coast
You can go on a cruise along the beautiful coastline with steep cliffs covered in greenery rising straight out of the water.
The coast with stunning landscapes, long beaches, quiet coves, ancient architectural monuments, famous islands (St. Stefan Island Hotel, St. Nicholas Island) delights not only adults, but will also give new emotions and joy to children.
Such a trip with children on a boat or yacht can be made from any resort town. And it is not at all tiring (lasts about 1.5 hours) even for kids, sheltered from the hot sun by spacious awnings.
Visiting neighbors
Once in Montenegro, you can take day trips to neighboring countries. The closest place is Croatia, but without a Schengen visa you won’t be able to go on an excursion to Dubrovnik, Croatia. But you can go on a one-day excursion trip to visa-free Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and even Italy.
In the latter option, you can take a one-day tour to the Italian city of Bari. You can get there by ferry from the city of Bar (Montenegro). Mostly believers come here to visit the burial place of the remains of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. To travel, you must obtain a permit in advance, which gives you the right to stay in Italy without a visa. You can also go to Italy with an open Schengen visa.
And if everyone is already tired of long trips or you don’t know where else to go on vacation with children, a short trip to the National Park in the center of the country on Mount Lovcen can always help out. You can also visit the Adventure Park, which features aerial trails with various obstacles. The huge territory of the park, in the shady coolness of which everything is permeated with adventurous routes from airways, stairs, nets, bungees, swinging logs, flying vines, requires young heroes to overcome exciting obstacles. And in this they are helped with no less enthusiasm by the older generation in the person of their parents and even grandparents.
For children of different ages, 6 safe routes of varying difficulty have been developed, where you can test your courage and dexterity. For the youngest (from 5 years old) there is a yellow Koala trail (its height is 1.5 m). Children over 14 years old will be interested in the blue Cheetah trail at a height of six meters, as well as the green Spider-Man trail, the red Panther trail, and the black Tarzan trail with a height of 15 meters, where not only children show dexterity and courage.
In the park you can play paintball “war”, ride ATVs, bicycles, small ponies, and shoot a bow. For a reasonable price, you can have a tasty and satisfying lunch here with your children. The exciting adventure park is located 15 minutes from Cetinje and 45 minutes from Budva in the Ivanovo Korito recreation center.
Waterpark Mediteran (Becici)
As an alternative to a beach holiday at sea, you can visit a water park. In Montenegro, this is so far the only water amusement park at the Mediteran Hotel (2 km from Budva). Admission is free for hotel guests. You can get there from neighboring resorts by bus or train.
A water park with a variety of slides and children's attractions, swimming pools, and a canal simulating a river, along which children enjoy floating on buns while basking in the sun. For children over 3 years old there is a swimming pool with two slides.
Definitely, excursion Montenegro is a country where you can and should not only travel with children. It will surprise you not only with its beauty and varied landscapes, comfort and safety, but will also give you the opportunity to experience medieval culture and get acquainted with the life of other peoples, breathe clean mountain air and bask in the hot sun. Until then...

If a vacation is already necessary and you are used to relaxing with the whole family, if you have children of different ages, then magnificent Montenegro is waiting for you.
This is a country with an ideal climate and ecology for children, with amazing nature and unique attractions. There are many different resorts in Montenegro and, most importantly, find out which one is right for you and your family, where it is preferable to relax with children.
The best places in Montenegro for families with children.
In order for the holiday to benefit adults and children, you need to carefully choose a place, taking into account the necessary criteria:
remoteness, population, safety, comfort of hotels and beaches;
age characteristics and preferences;
availability of healthy food;
the possibility of excursion or sports recreation;
availability of entertainment.
Montenegro is a country of impressions. The beaches are not the best for children, because they are not wide, pebble, concrete, rocky, but warm sandy ones can also be found.
The water temperature in the Adriatic Sea is comfortable for children from June to August. The rest of the time, the water is cool, no higher than +20 ° C, it is good to harden the child, but there is a danger of getting sick.
The most convenient resort cities for families with children are: Petrovac, Sveti Stefan, Tivat. There is a good beach with reddish sand and calm bays in the city of Bar. Not far from it is Chan Beach with breakwaters. The beach in Becici is quite large and clean, but the remoteness of the infrastructure: pharmacies, children's entertainment makes it not very popular for children's recreation.
It is important and interesting for children over 10 years old to visit the sights of the country and learn about historical features.
Such opportunities will be provided by the cities of Montenegro: Budva, Tivat, Herceg Novi.
Excursions to their historical places and architectural monuments are available for families. And the majesty of the temples, the mysteries of the princely palaces, the uniqueness of ancient mansions and fortress walls will make an indelible impression on children.
The nature and picturesqueness of the Bay of Kotor are excellent conditions for unique photographs and preserving the memory of an amazing journey.
The resort towns of Montenegro have excellent hotels with everything necessary for children.
Local cuisine is poorly adapted for baby food. There is no porridge or cottage cheese in it. But there are a lot of jars and boxes for baby food in stores. And the vegetables and fruits are of very high quality. The meat is fresh and inexpensive. Lots of excellent baked goods and fresh juices.
When is it preferable to vacation with children in Montenegro?
Thanks to the mild climate, the resort holiday season in Montenegro lasts quite a long time: from May to October. If it is difficult for you to decide in advance on the start date of your vacation, then you can focus on last-minute tours, more details on turisto.by, this gives you space for dates and the opportunity to save.
If you plan to swim and sunbathe at the sea, then it is best to go to Montenegro with children at the end of the swimming season, when the beaches are not so crowded. The velvet season is perfect for children's holidays - from the end of August to the end of September. At this time, the sun is not too hot, and the water is very warm.
In May, there is also no scorching sun, but the sea has not yet warmed up, which is a limitation for holidays with children.
In order for children to have enough time for acclimatization, they need to go to Montenegro for two weeks.
Be sure to take clothes suitable for the season for children, not forgetting a hat and an umbrella for the beach - protection from the scorching and aggressive sun. It is also advisable to take different shoes: for the beach and excursions. And don't forget about the first aid kit.
I suggest you and your children go to Adventures park Lovcen - this is a rope park that is located right in the forest. There are not only children's tracks (starting from five years old), but also tracks for adults. All this is located practically in the center of the Lovcen National Park - in the Ivanovo Korito valley.
If you and your children are not tired after the rope park, then you can also ride horses or bikes, walk or ride on ATVs. You can end such a busy day by having a picnic there in the places equipped for this purpose.
When you take a boat trip to Porto Montenegro, be sure to take a look at the Maritime Museum with your children. In former times, on this very spot there was a base for the Austro-Hungarian fleet, and then after the formation of Yugoslavia, a naval base. The owners of the museum carefully preserved all the exhibits left by the previous owners. Some of them are already at least a hundred years old. In the museum you can see those ancient mechanisms and ship equipment, as well as models of various ships, naval weapons, bathyscaphes and even an ancient diving suit.
But the most important exhibit of the museum is certainly the real submarine “Hero” R-821; it was in service in the Yugoslav navy from the sixties of the last century until the collapse of the country. At the moment, it has undergone a complete restoration, is located on the shore and is open for inspection. Next to the museum there is a wonderful children's playground in the shape of a ship - this is a wonderful entertainment for those kids who have not yet grown up to examine military submarines.
I think that it will also be very interesting for you and the children to visit the Lipa Cave, which is located eight kilometers from the city of Cetinje - the old capital of Montenegro. Nowadays, the cave is a well-equipped tourist site. The auto-train will take you straight from the parking lot to the entrance to the cave. Children really like this kind of entertainment.
Well, inside the cave you can endlessly admire the stunning natural formations, reminiscent of some unprecedented animals or fairy-tale palaces. There are very comfortable paths inside and the entire cave is well illuminated. Excursions to the cave take place four times a day and last approximately an hour. Just remember to take warm clothes with you, because it is very cold inside the cave.
Near the most popular Montenegrin resort of Budva there are two water parks. The first one is very small and is located on the territory of the Mediteran Hotel in the suburb of Budva - the village of Becici. All guests are welcome here, not just hotel guests. And the second water park was built literally very recently, is located on a hill right above the city and is called very simply - Water Park Budva. By the way, the restaurant located in the aqua complex offers a fantastic view of the city.
The water park is designed in the best European traditions - with a lazy river, a children's and adult area, a wave pool, a kamikaze slide, indoor and outdoor slides and, of course, a pool bar. Very young children can be safely left with the animators in the children's room under supervision.
Children will undoubtedly enjoy visiting a very nice museum in Cetinje, called “King Nikola's Courtyard”. It is quite small in size, but very bright and rich. It will certainly be interesting for children to see how real kings lived in the past. And although Montenegro is a very small country and has never been particularly rich, its last monarch, Nicholas I, lived in real royal luxury.
In the Old Town of Kotor there is a very interesting interactive museum that children simply adore. It is located in a medieval building adjacent to the Church of St. Nicholas. At the entrance to the museum, all visitors are greeted by a medieval knight, and inside you can even try on his armor. Here you can do many interesting things - grind flour on ancient millstones, for example, or practice some ancient craft.
All children simply love racing on karts - small cars, because it is both a sport and real extreme entertainment. In addition, here you can easily compete with your parents who can develop the fastest speed. You will find a karting center along the Cetinje-Podgorica route.
During the tourist season, a red pleasure submarine cruises through almost all Montenegrin resorts. And although the Adriatic Sea is not so rich in underwater inhabitants, children usually return very happy after such an exciting walk.
