Medical resorts of Azerbaijan. Health center "naftalan" Treatment resorts azerbaijan naftalan oil
City Naftalan located 330 km from the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku and 55 km southeast of the city of Ganja (Kirovabad). According to archival data, until 1873, naphthalan oil was extracted manually from shallow wells. In 1890, the German concessionaire engineer E.I. Yeger, having purchased land in naphthalan deposits, laid the first boreholes 250 m deep for industrial oil production. However, when refining oil, he was deeply disappointed: the oil did not contain gasoline fractions - it did not burn. On the verge of bankruptcy, Yeager noticed how hundreds of people from different places came here on hot summer days to dive into pits filled with this oil. Seeing the widespread use of naphthalan as a remedy, Yeger built a small factory to produce naphthalan ointment, which soon gained great popularity. Naftalan resort became in the 20s of the last century. Patients lived in private houses with local residents and had the opportunity to take naphthalan baths. By the beginning of the 50s, the first sanatorium with a residential building was built in Naftalan. By the end of the 80s, there were 6 sanatoriums with 4 thousand beds in Naftalan. During the entire existence of the Naftalan resort, about one and a half million people were cured in sanatoriums. After the collapse of the USSR, when the old travel system also collapsed, Naftalan almost ceased its activities. Since 2005, private modern sanatorium complexes began to be built in the city of Naftalan. Today, the government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the mayor’s office of the city of Naftalan are doing everything to restore the former popularity of the resort city among Russian residents. As part of the large state program for the restoration of Naftalan, 4 large operating sanatoriums of European level have been built in the city, and construction of three more is underway. Each sanatorium offers, in addition to traditional naftalan treatment, a number of other forms of treatment that complement the main thing - naftalan treatment. All sanatoriums are equipped with modern medical equipment.
Treatment with naphthalan oil (naphthalan treatment)
Naftalan is a thick, black-brown liquid with a specific aromatic odor. Naftalan has a complex chemical composition and is a highly resinous, low-sulfur, paraffin-free oil, containing almost no light fractions, like gasoline, kerosene, and naphtha. Contains trace elements (copper, zinc, manganese, lithium, boron, iodine, bromine, etc.)
The main active principles of naphthalan are naphthenic hydrocarbons. Naftalan oil has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, vasodilating, antiallergic, stimulating trophic functions, increasing the intensity of metabolic processes, stimulates the processes of spermatogenesis, accelerates the processes of ovulation and oogenesis.
Naftalan is used in the form of naphthalan baths (general, sessile, chamber), naphthalan lubricants heated with a Sollux lamp. For baths, native (natural) naphthalan is used, and for lubrication, native and deresined naphthalan, which does not irritate the mucous membranes, is therefore successfully used both cutaneously and in the form of tampons and baths, as well as for lubricating the mucous membranes of the gums, throat, nose and for ultraphonophoresis in the form of oil inhalations.
The course of treatment with naftalan mainly consists of receiving 10 naftalan and sun baths and various physiotherapeutic procedures. Naftalan baths are prescribed at a temperature of 37 - 38 ° C, the duration of one bath is 8 - 10 minutes, 10 - 12 baths per course of treatment. Naftalan lubricants are prescribed as general and local lubricants

Sanatorium "Naftalan"
Sanatorium "Naftalan" is a modern medical and health institution, opened in 2005. Among the resorts of Azerbaijan, Naftalan stands out for its effective treatment programs based on the use of purified naftalan oil. The sanatorium has a good medical and diagnostic base, in particular: biochemical and clinical diagnostic laboratories, as well as a functional diagnostics room.
Before starting therapy, all patients undergo a complete examination of the body, on the basis of which the doctor develops a treatment plan.
Sanatorium "Naftalan" has three buildings:
- Main building No. 1, where in addition to the rooms there is a clinic, a restaurant and administration offices.
- Building No. 2. A newly built building offering its guests comfortable, spacious rooms. For greater convenience, it is connected to building No. 1 through a corridor.
- VIP complex. It has 24 luxury rooms intended for important guests.
The Naftalan sanatorium is located outside the city, in a park area, where the maximum effect of treatment is achieved under the influence of the purest mountain air. To diversify the leisure time of its guests, the sanatorium has a rich library, restaurants serving national cuisine, an aerosolium, and billiards.
Also, while undergoing treatment at the Naftalan sanatorium, you can take an excursion to the famous sights of Azerbaijan: Mingachevir, Ganja, Hajikend and Sheki.
The Museum of Crutches is the clearest proof of the healing power of naphthalan.
While vacationing in Naftalan, you should definitely visit the unusual Museum of Crutches, which is the clearest proof of the healing power of naftalan.
Features of treatment in the sanatorium
The sanatorium offers two main types of treatment:
- Naftalan baths. For bath procedures, natural naphthalan is traditionally used, which is heated to a temperature of 37 - 38 ° C. Naftalan baths are recommended for skin, neurological and musculoskeletal diseases.
Heated oil enters the blood through the pores, where it absorbs all the harmful substances, which it removes out through the sweat glands.
The procedure lasts from 8 to 10 minutes. After this, the oil film must be thoroughly washed off in the shower. The patient is advised to remain in bed for some time so as not to interfere with the cleansing process of the body. - Naftalan lubricants. The diseased area of the body is lubricated with heated naphthalan oil and warmed up with a Sollux lamp for 10-20 minutes. For lubrication, purified naphthalan is used, which does not irritate the mucous membranes, and therefore can be used to treat the nose, throat, and gums.
Also, the main course of “naftalan therapy” traditionally includes such procedures as:
- naftalan tampons, which are used vaginally to treat diseases of the female genital area. To do this, a cotton swab saturated with heated naphthalan is inserted into the vagina. The duration of one procedure is about 60 minutes.
- rectal microenemas.
As well as a number of additional therapeutic measures that are prescribed by the doctor on an individual basis to increase the effectiveness of treatment. These include:
- paraffin therapy,
- iodine-bromine baths,
- vibration massage,
- paraffin treatment,
- underwater traction.
Cost of treatment
The sanatorium welcomes guests all year round, so prices for accommodation always remain stable and do not depend on seasonal fluctuations. The cost of a one-day stay at the sanatorium includes 3 meals a day, examination and treatment.

Thanks to the unique healing properties of naftalan oil, the sanatorium provides effective treatment for more than 70 diseases.
Sanatorium Naftalan was opened in May 2005. This is the first private medical institution opened in the Naftalan resort in Azerbaijan. It operates and accepts everyone for treatment all year round.
Medical department sanatorium Naftalan has all the necessary modern arsenal - a functional diagnostics room, a clinical diagnostic and biochemical laboratory, etc. All guests undergo a detailed examination, after which the doctor individually selects a set of procedures.

REVIEWS ABOUT THE SANATORIUM "NAFTALAN"
“1. The treatment helped significantly, the acute pain disappeared, now I only experience periodic attacks, there is no constant anxiety.
2. The service of the sanatorium "OC Naftalan" and the living conditions in the first building fully correspond to the 3-star service. Everything is neat, clean, tidy, comfortable, the canteen and medical department are nearby, no need to run along the street.
3. Special thanks to the canteen, the food was good, without contrived variety, but everything was very tasty. The taste of the food is unusual at first, as the employees explained, it was grown without chemical fertilizers. Indeed, this is how food tasted in my childhood.
4. The treatment department worked excellently, I liked the main procedure - naphthalan baths, as well as paraffin treatment. 5. A significant drawback for many, there is no accessible Internet (if this is important), in the sanatorium there is only one computer with a weak channel, there is no WiFi, there is one opposite in Chinar (expensive - 2 euros/hour) or in the city (2 km, 0 .6 euro/hour).
5. If work allows, I will definitely try to come in March; unfortunately, it’s not possible in October, but I have a great desire to visit again.
6. I was in your country for the first time, small travel notes for those interested: a trip through Baku, by train to Naftalan, met friendly citizens. If you wish, you can learn a few friendly phrases out of respect for the country you are visiting, and the locals will be happy to help and advise. In Baku, I recommend everyone to visit the old city, it’s like the quarters of old Europe, only with an oriental flavor. By the way, the films “The Diamond Arm” and “Amphibian Man” were filmed there, which the locals are terribly proud of and will be happy to show you the places. The sea embankment looks wonderful. The train to Naftalan leaves at 23-00, arrival at 06-00, very convenient, I arrived in the morning and enjoyed a walk around the city. A ticket to a sleeping car (I recommend) cost 22 euros one way, it is better to immediately take a return one. One minus: all announcements at the station are in the local language, so you won’t get lost if you want.”

""My name is Roman. I am 33 years old. I suffer, I’m not sick, but I’ve been suffering from psoriasis for 14 years, plus damage to all joints and almost death several times from traditional treatment. It sounds trite, but I had no hope of recovery for a long time. I knew that I couldn’t turn it off for long and that’s all. A lot of money, nerves, ordering rare drugs, a short remission and that’s it. Briefly speaking. Good people suggested. Internet. And so I contacted the Naftalan OC, agreed on a time, bought a ticket and, without any unnecessary hemorrhoids, flew to Ganja, where I was met and brought to the OC. Since the driver is a playful and dashing man, he immediately began to take care of my health, so I also had time for dinner, despite the fact that the Muscovy airline tried very hard to make sure I remained hungry.
The placement went quickly and without unnecessary curtsies. Single room, one room on the ground floor with a balcony, in the room there is a shower-toilet, TV, wardrobe, bed, chair, bedside table and a mini-fridge, which is not needed because during treatment you cannot drink cold things and cool down. The room is not big, but I didn’t have any guests in the room for three weeks. Except, of course, the maid, who cleaned the room every day and replenished the water supply. Treatment in naftalan baths is not the cleanest in the world, so you will need a supply of disposable underwear, and a couple of sets of outerwear, the kind that you wanted to take to the dacha and then throw away.
I arrived on Sunday, on Monday morning I had a check-up (therapist, cardiogram and something else), received appointments and it began. Everything is very convenient and nearby. Since I have problems with blood pressure, I took a course of 21 days so that I could take baths every other day. They write that hypertensive patients should not bathe in oil, but I arrived there with a pressure of 170/100, after treatment with oil and antihypertensive drugs, which in Moscow were like grain for an elephant, I left with a pressure of 120/70, 10 kg lighter and 5 years younger. And this is not for the sake of a nice word - they didn’t recognize me at home.
Baths, physiotherapy, massage and excellent food - that's what awaits you in Naftalan. By the way, about nutrition. The food is good, a little monotonous, but good. Lots of meat (no pork!), borscht every day or a soup of your choice, porridge, some sweets, pies, fruits, greens (could have been more). The staff is friendly and unobtrusive, they don’t walk around with arrogant faces, as if you owe them something, but they don’t fawn on you either. They calmly do their job and if a question arises, they will definitely solve it, show you where, where or how, in short, the staff is what you need. While taking oil baths, you are looked after and then wiped/washed by a specially trained person, without whom you cannot do without because you cannot get rid of the oil without him.
Leisure. There's not much to do there. But you don’t go there to dance, but to get treatment. There are, of course, board games - backgammon, checkers. But the most important thing is TEA! There is a teahouse owner named Fizuli, a kind and good man, and he makes magnificent, fragrant and very tasty tea. Opposite is the Chinar sanatorium, and so its guests ran to us to drink tea. Guests. Basically, about 60% are local pensioners, the rest are Russian Azerbaijanis who have lived in Russia for a long time, countrymen in short.
So, the result of my entire sanatorium epic is that 95% of psoriasis has gone away, despite the fact that 65% of the body surface was affected, joint pain has decreased, and at first disappeared completely. I was pleased with everything. To consolidate the results, they advised me to come in six months, then once every three years. Anyone who is tired of psoriasis, don’t put it off, go to Naftalan for treatment. By the way, I’m going there for New Year’s Eve with my family and friends. I am undergoing treatment, and they are for prevention, besides, it is more expensive to relax in the Moscow region during the New Year holidays."

"It was my first time in Naftalan. I had already been to Baku before. A friend from Baku suggested me about naftalan baths. I found information on the Internet and booked a room in advance at the Naftalan Health Center. I arrived on Monday morning, February 20th, by taxi from Baku , 3 hours away, they sent the driver Zamir to a Mercedes car.
Posted quickly. Single room, one room on the ground floor with a balcony, shower-toilet, large LCD TV, large 4-section wardrobe with mirrors, new, wide bed, chairs, bedside tables and refrigerator, electric kettle, dishes in the cabinet. The room is large, bright, the bed is new, fresh, the maid cleaned the room every day and replenished the supply of mountain water in the decanter.
After lunch on the same day, I had a check-up (chief physician, urologist, therapist, ECG, tests), received prescriptions and treatment began. Everything is very convenient and nearby.
The first thing that made a positive impression on me about the Naftalan Health Center was the cleanliness and good service in the rooms and in the dining room. The service of the sanatorium "OC Naftalan" and the living conditions in the 3rd building fully correspond to the service of the best hotels. Everything is very neat, clean, tidy, comfortable, the dining room and the medical department are nearby, there is a transition from one building to another, you don’t have to run along the street, although it was very warm outside.
Secondly, I really liked the naphthalan baths, their strength and benefits affect the body, the treatment helped significantly, I immediately felt changes in my body (acute pain disappeared, there is no constant anxiety). Physiotherapy - a variety of procedures (paraffin, massage, phonophoresis, darsonval, magnetic therapy, inhalations). Tactful, attentive and friendly staff creates a cozy and favorable atmosphere.
I would especially like to mention the doctors: urologist Samedov Ilyas, ozone therapist Nasirli Bafta, dermatologist Rena Mamedova, as well as receptionist Turan, who provided great support with their knowledge, experience, attention, talked about treatment with naphthalan baths, gave a lot of advice, gave recommendations on what to do before and after treatment in a sanatorium, at home. The treatment prescribed was complete and sufficient. Many thanks to all of them!! The service staff are all polite and smiling. They calmly do their job and if a question arises, they will definitely solve it, show you where, where or how, and in general the staff is what you need. While taking oil baths, you are looked after and then wiped/washed by a specially trained person, without whom you cannot do without because you cannot get rid of the oil without him. And here I would especially like to mention the department specialist Sadi, special thanks to him!
Naftalan baths, physiotherapy, excellent massage - this is what awaits you at OC Naftalan. Thank you very much for the quality treatment and useful rest. I took my laptop with me, Wi-Fi was always connected, the channel connection was good, I was even able to connect to the Internet in my room. TV in the room and on the floors, channels were in Russian. I plan to come for treatment to this sanatorium many, many more times. Treatment in naphthalan baths is not the cleanest in the world, so you will need a supply of disposable underwear and several dark-colored T-shirts for the procedures. And to the people of Azerbaijan - a special THANK YOU for their goodwill, friendliness, understanding, responsiveness, and politeness. I learned a few friendly phrases out of respect for the country I was visiting, although I understood the Azerbaijani language, which is similar to our (Kazakh) language - a Turkish-speaking group. In Baku I visited all the historical places, I especially like the Maiden Tower. Excellent, wonderful, fabulous sea embankment in Baku!! If you were looking for heaven on earth - this is BAKU!!! I recommend NAFTALAN to everyone!!! You will not regret the days spent in this wonderful region!!"

“I liked the sanatorium, the treatment and rest all went well together. The attitude of the staff is not bad, the doctors are competent. I don’t like to talk a lot, I’ll just say that after the sanatorium and the treatment prescribed to me, my problem with prostatitis was resolved. For this, thanks to the doctor, who knows how to prescribe correctly treatment. After the procedures at home, I also took Sulfa-P tablets for chronic prostatitis. Everything has recovered for me, I’m happy."

“My husband and I were treated in this sanatorium on the recommendation of good friends in April 2009. My husband went to treat prostatitis, and I campaigned so that he would not be bored, and arthrosis of the knees and intervertebral hernias were tormented.
We arrived at midnight and were put into a tiny room with two beds, so the two of us couldn’t separate. But what a bed it was - a fairy tale! How fluff! As it turned out later: the mattress was made of sheep wool and so was the blanket. In the morning we had a reception with the heads. The doctor prescribed procedures, tests, and a cardiogram. You can come without a sanatorium-resort card, everything will be taken care of there. Do not take with tumors, fibroids, do not prescribe baths for those with high blood pressure, but they are the most important thing in treatment.
They prescribed 8 procedures for us, the first days we fell down from running around, slept soundly, then we got involved. I really liked the baths, as if you were lying in thick hot chocolate, if not for the smell of oil. Then you can barely wash yourself off; all your laundry is still stained. Our advice is to take only black underwear with you and plenty of it, there’s nowhere to wash it, and you can’t wash it, I threw away almost half of it.
The attitude of the doctors and staff is wonderful!!! The sanatorium is mainly inhabited by local people. There are few Russians. There was a married couple from the Baltic states, two people from Germany, four from Ufa. The local population is very friendly, they regret the collapse of the Union, they will always join in with conversations, especially women. The older generation still speaks Russian, the younger generation no longer speaks Russian. I would like to praise the kitchen, the food was very tasty, just like at home, special thanks to the cooks!!!
We paid for a deluxe room, these are two rooms, a bedroom and a living room. The sanatorium was built at a minimum level of amenities, so to speak - simply, but tastefully! The rooms are cleaned every day, linen is changed every other day. There is a small village nearby, 20 minutes walk. There is a market and all sorts of shops there. Anyone who buys naftalan to bring with them, and then sells it to the local population for treatment at home, keep in mind that you will not be allowed through at the airport!!! We were forced to take everything out of the suitcase because... it belongs to explosives, the transportation of which is prohibited! But everything is great!
Baku is a very beautiful city! We rode the metro, visited the local Arbat, and the embankment. We regretted that instead of Turkey we could have holidayed here, the same sea. My husband was cured, our doctors confirmed it. Peace and prosperity to you!"

"I was on vacation in Azerbaijan for the first time. I found this hotel (Naftalan Health Center) by chance on the Internet. Just for a search query about the treatment of psoriasis at the Naftalan resort, the search engine returned this particular center. I went from the end of September to October 15. By the way, the weather is fine, average the temperature during the day was +25-28, reached +30, at night +18 - 22. There were no problems with placing an order, transfer and making an advance payment. About treatment: when assigning a list and the number of necessary and not so necessary procedures, there were no restrictions and no one required additional payments. The food, although somewhat monotonous, was satisfying. The only entertainment was the local disco. At the end of September and beginning of October, the fruits were grapes, green and black, pomegranate, apples, pears, lemons. Everything was very sweet and tasty, especially grapes and pomegranate. Try it, you won’t regret it!!! As for persimmons, in October, until the middle, they are not yet ripe and I don’t recommend buying them, although they will sell them on every corner. In general, if you need a relatively inexpensive treatment, then you here."

The Naftalan resort, located next to Ganja, is one of the most unusual medical resorts not only in the CIS, but throughout the whole world. Here they treat with naftalan - a special type of brown oil, which is famous for its healing properties. Archaeologists report that these places were inhabited around the 12th century, but the use of “liquid gold” for treatment began only in the 1870s, and the idea of attracting tourists to the city came to the authorities already at the beginning of the 21st century. “The spring of black gold is the key to healing,” is the motto of Naftalan health resorts.
Medicinal oil was known in China and India and was traded throughout the Middle East. “Oil spas”, which gained spontaneous short-lived popularity in Soviet times, decided to revive - and successfully. Today in Naftalan there are quite a lot of hotels built in the 2010s, and the resort’s profile is arthritis, rheumatism and skin diseases.

The treatment goes like this: the patient is placed in a bath filled with naphthalan oil at a temperature of +37...+38 °C, the oil is absorbed through the skin and has a beneficial effect on blood flow, improves blood circulation in the capillaries and stimulates all body functions.
