Pyrzowice is an international airport in the Polish city of Katowice, the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship. The official name is Międzynarodowy Port Lotniczy Katowice-Pyrzowice.
Construction of the airfield began in 1940 by German troops. Until 1966, when the first passenger flight was carried out by LOT aircraft on the Katowice-Warsaw route, the airfield was used first by the German, and then by the Soviet and Polish military.
^^ First passenger terminal
By the end of 1969, the first passenger terminal, taxiways and apron in front of the terminal were built. The airport served only domestic flights. In 1976, a record number of passengers were served - almost 120 thousand.
In order to develop air transportation, the authorities of the Silesian Voivodeship decided to found the joint stock company Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze S.A., which became the management company in 1994.
Thanks to the management of GTL S.A., LOT-Polish Airlines resumed flights from Katowice to Warsaw in 1992, and in 1993 the German Lufthansa launched the first international flight in the airport's history, connecting Katowice to Frankfurt.
Traffic began to slowly increase. In 2003, the airport management and low-cost airline Wizz Air Hungary held negotiations to begin a partnership.
With Poland's accession to the European Union and the Open Skies program in 2004, the republic's airspace became open to all European air carriers. It was at this moment that Wizz Air Hungary began air transportation from the airport, increasing passenger traffic in Pyrzowice by 2.5 times in 1 year from 258 thousand passengers in 2003 to 623 thousand in 2004.
At the end of 2008, the airport served 2.4 million passengers, about 75% of passengers on regular flights were transported by Wizz Air Hungary aircraft.
Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice is a unique example of constructive cooperation between an airline and an airport. Thanks to this, the airport was able to increase passenger traffic several times and began to develop infrastructure.
Now Katowice Airport ranks third among Polish airports in terms of passenger traffic and has a chance to become second in 2009.
Infrastructure
Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice has 1 runway with a length of 2800 m and a width of 60 m of category ILS I, as well as 3 aprons with parking for aircraft of the Airbus A320, Boeing 747 class.
The runway is located at an altitude of 303 m above sea level and due to this, the airport experiences only a few non-flying days a year due to weather conditions.
During 2009-2014 it is planned to build a cargo terminal, further expand the apron and build a new runway, which will have a length of 3600 m and ILS II category. The old strip will be used as a taxiway.
Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice has two passenger terminals, which are combined into one complex with an area of 21.3 thousand square meters. m and form a single whole.
Terminal A is the very first terminal at the airport, serving flights beyond the borders of the Schengen countries.
^^ Passenger Terminal B
Terminal B is a new part, put into operation in 2007. Has 3 levels. Serves flights operating within the Schengen area.
The total number of check-in counters is 35, 9 aviation security control points, 14 boarding gates.
Where can you eat at Katowice Airport?
There are about 20 small shops and catering outlets (fast food, cafes, restaurants) in the terminals. Prices are comparable to city prices. Lunch can cost 10-30 zlotys depending on the menu choice.
Restaurants and cafes are located on the 2nd floor of terminals A (the very first and oldest restaurant at the airport) and B.
The pharmacy is located on the 1st floor in the central part of the terminal.

Up to 50% discount on parking fees).

Ave. Duration 1h Frequency Twice daily Estimated price 14 zł - 25 zł WebsiteIf people want to move to Poland, then to Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow. This was also my desire, to be honest, I didn’t even know about some kind of “Katowice”. Life brought me here and said: love this place. From that time on, I had to make myself fall in love with the Polish city in every possible way. In old, sometimes even shaky, buildings; in modern, sometimes even too modern, shopping centers; to interesting museums, loud clubs, illogical streets (more on them below) and constant construction, because the city is developing every day.
People mostly learn about the city because of cheap flights from Katowice to other cities or because of the link of moving here to study. From these two factors it follows that there are few tourists here, because they are passing through or become permanent residents. It is this openness to foreign students that makes Katowice quite a multicultural city. And also very student-like. Large universities provide great opportunities for a large number of students, so be prepared for rush hour three times a day - in the morning, in the evening and in the afternoon (when students return from classes).
Well, it’s impossible to forget two more features of Katowice:
- This is the center of the Polish coal industry. Therefore, if suddenly it seemed to you that an earthquake began in the spring, then most likely there is a mine under you. Because of this feature, residents complain about bad air (believe me, wiping off dust in the morning and evening is not a whim, but sometimes a very strong necessity). And this was also the impetus for the creation of the colorful Nikishovets, which I will talk about below.
- Every year the ESL One Katowice championship in eSports disciplines is held here, so once a year the influx of “eSports” tourists increases for a couple of days while the competition lasts.
And finally, I want to say here that Katowice, despite the small number of attractions, is nevertheless a very nice and sincere place where you can have a pleasant time and, at worst, go to nearby Wroclaw or.
How to get there
As I already said, people come to Katowice because of the opportunity to travel cheaply to other European countries. Although, of course, sometimes it is much more convenient to go to Warsaw and travel further from there. However, thirty kilometers from Katowice there is an international airport, which, by the way, was expanded and updated in 2016, creating all the amenities for tourists.
Katowice, in principle, is a point where you can go anywhere. I would even call it the middle of a huge web. The famous Polski Bus, a huge railway station that will take you anywhere in the world and the airport made my stay here more than eventful in terms of travel and convenient in terms of the route here.
By plane
Direct flights to Katowice from Moscow or St. Petersburg, unfortunately, No. Each time you have a transfer waiting for you, and quite a long one.
I would advise you to take a plane to Warsaw (a ticket for which can sometimes cost some 55 EUR (250 PLN / zloty), and from there go by bus or train, of which there are plenty. The flight to Warsaw will last on average up to 2 hours, if without transfers.
From Moscow
If you stubbornly do not want to change to another transport, then from Moscow to Katowice:
- with two transfers and 27 hours of travel, a ticket will cost you 145 EUR (653 PLN);
- with one transfer and 5 hours of travel, a ticket will cost at least 217 EUR (977 PLN).
Departures from Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo airports occur every day. Depending on where you have a transfer, the flight will be served by the airline: LOT, Lufthansa. Accordingly, transfers mainly take place in Warsaw or Frankfurt am Main.
From Saint-Petersburg
It’s also quite possible to fly away:
- with two transfers and 29 hours of flight; the minimum ticket price is 134 EUR (607 PLN);
- with one transfer and 25 hours travel time; ticket price - 236 EUR (1,063 PLN);
- with one transfer and 6 hours travel time; ticket price - 417 EUR (1,878 PLN).
You can fly out every day; the following airlines operate: LOT, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa. The most frequent transfers are traditionally in Warsaw or Frankfurt am Main.
How to get from the airport to the center
From Katowice Airport ( Międzynarodowy Port Lotniczy w Katowice) you can get to the center relatively cheaply and with great comfort, or very cheaply, but without much comfort and with more time.
By train
The train in Katowice is perhaps one of the most accessible ways to get here, but sometimes not the fastest:
- From Moscow(Belorussky Station) on Thursdays and Fridays a train departs in the direction of Katowice (via Warsaw and without transfers) for 10,000 RUB per compartment. Travel time is 22 hours. It seems to me that this is a very good option.
- Second option from Moscow, which seems a bit pointless to me in terms of wasting money and time. It makes it possible to travel by train with a transfer in St. Petersburg, leaving on Wednesday (from Leningradsky station, arriving at Moskovsky station and leaving directly in Katowice from Vitebsk station), but you will have to spend 2 days and 3 hours on the way. The price is also not encouraging - 13,000 RUB.
Concerning St. Petersburg, then the system here is the same as from Moscow. There is a direct train and a transfer in Moscow:
- A train leaves from Vitebsk Station on Thursdays and will take you to Katowice in one day and 5 hours. Ticket - from 9,500 RUB per compartment.
- A train runs from the same station on Wednesdays with a transfer in Moscow, travel time is one day and 8 hours, tickets start from 11,000 RUB.
You will arrive at Katowice Central Station, which is located in the very center of the city. From there you can easily go anywhere in the city or first wander around Galeria Katowicka and, as they say, do some shopping.
It is impossible to get lost at the station; there are signs everywhere and a security service that will help you find the right exit. The only difficulty, as it may seem at first, is to find the Katowice Dworzec bus stop, from where all city public communications actually depart. To do this, you need to go to McDonald's at the station and turn left, where there will be escalators down, so they will take you down to the -1st floor to a large underground bus parking lot. If you have suitcases, you can use the elevators, which are located to the left of the railway ticket offices.
From the station you can go to the Central Square (Katowice Rynek). It is very close and all you need to do is exit through the main entrance and walk along 3 May Street, which is shown below on the map:
By bus
From Moscow
The cheapest option for traveling to Katowice is to leave Moscow by Ecolines bus. With one transfer (in Riga) they will take you there in 39 hours (the duration of the trip depends on the time of crossing the border). Bus tickets cost 5,310 RUB, plus there is a system of discounts for students, pensioners and children.
From Saint-Petersburg
The same bus runs from St. Petersburg, and I still haven’t figured out the “magic” of calculating the time and price. You will be transported with the same transfer in Riga in 38 hours and 40 minutes (or even in 37 hours), for the same 5,310 RUB. Plus, there is a system of discounts. Well, traditionally, the time may change if there is a long journey across the border.
Buses run once a week on Thursdays. It is advisable to book tickets in advance. By the way, what I love about these buses is the comfortable ride - good Internet, a separate TV for each passenger, and a flight attendant on board. So I really recommend this option. There is also the opportunity to travel to Warsaw or (you can read about these methods in articles about these cities).
How to get from the station to the center
Buses arrive at the bus station, which is a 7-minute walk from the Central Railway Station. A map of such a walk is below.
And yes, I know from my own experience that arriving at this bus station is a little scary, because it looks more than frail, but don’t be alarmed that this is the case throughout the whole city. Rumor has it that the bus station will soon be renovated, but this, of course, still needs to wait.
By car
If you own a car, you can plan a road trip to Katowice.
From Moscow
According to Uncle Google maps, your journey from Moscow will last 1,547 km and approximately 18 hours.
The road will pass along the M1 and A4, and then through and. There will be toll roads in the sections, so stock up on cash or immediately drive up to the toll with non-cash payment.
From Saint-Petersburg
You will reach Katowice in approximately 18 hours and cover 1,477 km. The road will pass through, and, in fact,. Again, there are toll roads on the route; look for details of driving along them in the review article about Poland in the section.
The entire route will be along the E95 road.
The approximate total time on the road should be taken symbolically, so to speak, because in reality everything depends on the time you spend at the border. Don't forget to get insurance and a visa.
Take into account the peculiarities of driving through Polish cities, where the speed limit is up to 50 km/h, and do not forget that there are cameras at almost every traffic light, which will immediately detect you in case of violation. Do not pay attention to the fact that Polish drivers violate or overtake you: they hate driving slowly and often exceed the speed limit, but with the help of what magic they manage to get around the fine, I don’t know anything even after 3 years of living here.
Regarding the quality of roads, it is worth answering that in Poland they are almost ideal. Only roads somewhere in villages are in poor condition or are completely unpopular. Basically, all international roads and even in large cities are very good. Although the Poles themselves like to talk about pits, where they find them remains a mystery to me.

When is the season? When is the best time to go
I have always believed and still believe that it is best to travel in late spring or early summer, because winter cities without ski resorts look dull to me. Actually, it was my winter trip to that that spoiled all my impressions of this city, and even after three years of living in Poland I did not change it.
However, some people say that Katowice has beautiful Christmas markets. Perhaps this is true, but when compared with Warsaw, Wroclaw, or at worst Krakow, this is nothing.
Based on this, I strongly recommend early May in Katowice (read why exactly early May below), all summer and early autumn.
If you choose a city based on how busy it is with tourists, then naturally the warmer months are more touristy, especially due to the abundance of different city festivals.
As for the weather, I can say that it is mild here. Even in Warsaw the weather is more similar to Moscow, while in Katowice it is warmer, drier and less windy. Although there are exceptions and anomalies, for example, the winter and spring of 2017 with -20 ° C in January and snowfall in April.
Katowice in summer
During the summer months, the city maintains an average temperature of +25 °C, although +34 °C is also not uncommon here. But after days like these, when you feel like you’re being fried in a frying pan, a short season of warm rains begins.
Basically, the entire population in the summer goes to the lakes near the city (or in it) or wander around the shopping center, where there is air conditioning.
As for tourists, their number increases during the bike ride across Poland, which is called TourDePologne. Then, by the way, you should be careful with buses, because they simply do not travel in the center. There is no specific date for this marathon, it changes.
Katowice in autumn
As for this time of year, early autumn in Katowice is more reminiscent of summer, especially for the period before September 23 (in Poland they say that autumn begins exactly after September 23 and, judging by the weather, it is so). Then the amount of rain increases, and the temperature gradually drops to +5-6 °C.
I haven’t seen snow in November in all three years, so I can say that autumn here is still autumn, not winter, no matter how paradoxical it may sound. In addition to precipitation, the number of students increases in the fall, arriving in October just in time for the start of the winter semester.
Katowice in spring
Oh, my favorite time of year is spring. We can't do without details here:
- March is the craziest month in the whole of Poland, and even more so in Katowice. Here at this time there is simply a weather armageddon: in a day there can be snow, rain, hail, rockfall, and it can be from +20 °C during the day to -20 °C in the evening. The Poles themselves say about this month: W marcu jak w garncu (“In March it’s like being in a bowler hat”). Real spring in Katowice begins on March 23rd. Because of this, I categorically do not recommend traveling to Katowice, or even to Poland in March.
- April is a pleasant month when it starts to warm up. At the beginning of the month the temperature will rise to +17 °C degrees, and then at the end it will drop to normal +14-15 °C. Frequent rains and strong winds. But, in principle, it is a pleasant month. I don’t take April 2017 into account, because I’m experiencing this weather hell with snowfalls and real February in the middle of spring for the first time in my life.
- May is my favorite month here, but only if you take it at the beginning. And here's why: almost no rain, a light warm breeze, good weather, lack of desire to study and the most pleasant +20-23 °C. But what awaits you at the end of this welcoming month, believe me, resembles a cruel joke. Sharp rains and cold temperatures up to +14 °C are a typical situation in late May Katowice.
As for the influx of tourists, it is perhaps worth noting the same May, when Poland celebrates Constitution Day (May 3), as well as the student Juwenalia Śląskie (more on them below).
Katowice in winter
Winter passes with rare -15 °C (as was the case in 2017), and in general the temperature does not drop below -9 °C during the day. Snowfalls begin in mid-December, and the heaviest snowfalls occur in February. I love the Katowice winter for its mild nature: you don’t get cold just from the thought of going outside, and the sun often makes you happy with its appearance.
As for tourists, this is a real paradise for residents, because tourists come only around Christmas and then in very small numbers.

Districts. Where is the best place to live?
The peculiarity of Katowice is that there are no clearly defined boundaries of the Center (at universities even whole classes are taught about this). Nobody can tell you whether the railway station, the market, the largest park or the University of Silesia should be considered the center, so the city is divided into 5 districts (precisely districts, not districts), which in Polish are called “dzielnicy” (dzielnicy):
First District
The most important one, which impoverishes everything most central that can be in this city, this district is called Dzielnica Śriódmiejska (I). This includes four areas in which I would advise you to settle. In the first district of Śriódmeście, housing prices will be the highest, but the distance from all the main tourist places will be very small. Here you can find any type of accommodation.
Second District
The remaining areas are convenient in terms of connectivity to the center, but still keep in mind that sometimes you will have to travel a long time to get there. The same 2nd district (Zespół dzielnic północnych), it would seem, is a good option: cheap offers of apartments/hostels/hotels (up to 150 PLN), quite close to the center and not far from the Silesian Park, but nevertheless you will sometimes have to wait a long time for the bus.
Third and fourth districts
Moving away from the Central District, I would advise settling in the 3rd, 4th and 5th districts of the third and fourth districts. They are located relatively close to the Center, and the price of housing here is normal (from 100 to 140 PLN). Moreover, for this price you can find both a hotel and apartments. In principle, there are a lot of hostels and hotels in the city; apartments are not a rare occurrence, but they are almost always difficult to get because they are busy. The further from the center, the cheaper and the longer and more difficult it is to get to the center. You can, for example, search for hotel options in the city and compare prices for accommodation in them from different sites, and simply book accommodation on. If you still have a lot of time left before your intended trip, you can try your luck with apartments that are convenient to search for.
However, in the 6th district of the III district (Zespół dzielnic zachodnich) on the outskirts, which is known for its hostels for everyone and everything, buses run very often and even though you have to go to the center for 30-40 minutes, you still have to wait 40 minutes for this you don't have to take the bus itself. You can find a room in a hotel or villa (prices from 160 PLN).
Fifth District
I would not recommend settling in the south of Katowice (Zespół dzielnic południowych) just because of the difficulties of transport connections. If buses usually travel around the city with a break of 10 minutes, then here you will have to wait up to 40 minutes, so if you don’t want to be dependent on transport, it’s better not to stop here. The same story is with the IV district (except for the 3rd district).
***
When it comes to safety and scenery, everything is relatively the same in the city. I would not say that it is really dangerous to walk the streets in Katowice, even at night. Although, of course, if you see any suspicious people, then it’s better to somehow get around the place.
What are the prices for holidays?
Housing
Prices depend on proximity to main attractions. Thus, prices range from 15 EUR to 200 EUR per night in a double room in a 3-4* hotel. But on average, for one night in the area closest to the center, and sometimes even in the very center, you can pay up to 50 EUR.
Nutrition
As for food, it all depends on whether you want to eat in restaurants or are ready to eat in small eateries or even cook yourself. Therefore, at McDonald's my favorite set 2foryou (burger + potatoes / drink) will cost 1.30 EUR (6 PLN), in canteens where food is taken by the gram (a very popular and convenient method of canteens in Poland, about which below) you can eat for 4 EUR (20 PLN). As for restaurants, the price tag ranges from 5 to 20 EUR, depending on how you want to party.
You can save money in stores where you can buy a minimum set of food that will fill you with food for 3 EUR (14-15 PLN).
Excursions
Museums or an amusement park will cost you 2-9 EUR. The only way to save money is to say you are a student (if you really are a student). Or come on days when museums are free to visit.
Taxi
The price of a taxi, as in all European countries, increases at night, and almost all taxis have a kilometer meter. For 11 kilometers in the evening I usually paid 6 EUR (30 PLN), in the daytime you can find a taxi for 3 EUR (17 PLN). Yes, and the likelihood of finding an illegal taxi in Katowice is likely to bring Harry Potter into the real world.

Main attractions. What to see
Katowice is not the most “attractive” city, but even here you can find its own highlights. Of the main ones, I would name Spodek, ul. Mariacka, a couple of churches, the new Museum of the Silesian Region and, perhaps, a beautiful area in Katowice itself called Nikiszowiec.
And if admission to the streets and churches is free, then at the entrance to museums you will have to pay from 1 to 7 EUR, so I would advise you to check in advance on what day the museum has free admission. This rule is very helpful when traveling, because, for example, in Krakow almost all museums are free on Sunday. Moreover, if you go to the museum night in Katowice, then everything will be completely free, although you will have to wait a little in line to enter.
Taking a guide here is not the best decision, and, to be honest, I have never heard of excursions in Katowice in my life. This is more of a city for independent walking.
By the way, if you don’t know where to go, then go eat traditional food in restaurants or cafes! This way, firstly, you will relax and receive a bonus in the form of the opportunity to ask the waitress, and sometimes even the owner, where else you can go. At least while I was working as a waiter in a restaurant, I was often asked this question.
Top 3
Beaches. Which ones are better
If you come in the summer and want to take a walk near the lakes, or even sunbathe a little, then there are three options for getting out of the situation:
Churches and temples. Which ones are worth visiting?
How to get there: to get to the museum, you need to take the train to Auschwitz at the Katowice central station (10 stops) and then walk 1 kilometer from the station towards the museum. Unfortunately, there is no other way. The fare depends on how far in advance you buy your ticket.
You can check the museum's opening hours.
Food. What to try
Poland has its own special cuisine, which you can read about in. But it is important to say that, for example, the famous smoked soup żurek (żurek) is special in each of the regions, so it is worth trying in Katowice. Here you will most often find yourself on zurek with eggs, shank, sausage, sour cream, horseradish and potatoes.
In addition to Polish cuisine, you can find various restaurants serving European and Georgian cuisine, and the average price tag will be around 3-25 EUR. It all depends on which establishment you go to.
If you want to cook yourself, I recommend buying products from my personal favorite Biedronka or Simly. Of the same cheap stores, there is also Lidl, but I never like the choice there. On every corner in Katowice, as in all of Poland, in fact, you can find a Żabka store, it is open from 06:00 to 23:00, and this is its main difference from the rest, but it is important to take into account that prices here will be above average . It’s better not to go to the supermarket called Stokrotka, which is located on the -1st floor of the Katowice Gallery, no matter how many times I went there, one glance at the cost of products there erased the former joy from the face on the threshold.
If you love everything “from your grandmother,” be prepared to pay fabulous sums for shopping at the markets here. It is the products from the markets here that are two to three times more expensive than those from the supermarket. If the price is not important to you, the easiest option to buy food is to leave the Katowice Gallery and go straight along the street perpendicular to 3 May Street (it will be directly opposite the exit from the center). Grandmothers often sit there and sell various vegetables/fruits from their or neighbors’ gardens.
If you really want to eat, I advise you to go to the so-called “gramovki” (I recommend Dekasmak and Bon Apetito). Here the price is taken not based on the type of product (meat/potatoes/pasta), but based on its weight. That is, you just take whatever you want, and when you pay, they weigh your plate of food and calculate it. Basically, for 100 grams they charge around 0.70 EUR (3.20 PLN).
Such cafes can be found on the top floor of the Katowice Gallery or at the exit from it, on the corner of 3 May and Stavowa streets.

Holidays
Holi
Do you know about such a holiday as Holi? When people throw multi-colored powders at each other and the result is a bright colorful action, this is exactly the kind of holiday that is held every year in Katowice. The exact date, unfortunately, is never known in advance; it is planned several months before the event itself, but mostly these are the summer months, when it is so nice to spend time outdoors!
All details can be found on the website. Anyone can take part, the main thing is to get to Pola Marsowę. To do this, exit Galeria Katowice and take tram lines no. 0, 11 or 23.
You will need to go in the direction of Chebzie Pętla, but you need to get off earlier, at the Park Śląski Wejście Główne stop (10 in a row). There is another 450 meters to walk along the road to the park itself.
Juwenalia Sląskie
In addition to Holi, there is a wonderful student festival in Katowice. Or rather, it’s a whole festive week, when students dance in round dances in superhero costumes (and this is in the central square), concerts with celebrities and even stars of the Polish Eurovision are organized for them, and on Friday and Saturday in areas remote from the center they organize a huge festival with free entrance, music, competitions and just rivers of beer.
Once I was lucky enough to work at such a festival, and Russian tourists just decided that it was some kind of beer fest. (All this happens on the twentieth of May).
Festival nauki
Every year at the beginning of spring (the date is usually unknown in advance), a Targi nauki is held at the market, where the University of Silesia presents its best departments and talks about the most interesting things to attract students. Why you need to come here:
- Here the biologists are offered to eat grasshoppers covered in chocolate or pepper.
- Chemists suggest that before eating marshmallows, soak them in liquid nitrogen (the crunchiness for the first three seconds will be as if you were eating glass) or break the rose!
In general, a very original and interesting action.
Nowy Rock
As for the New Year, everything is much simpler and more traditional. The Christmas tree in Katowice has been standing somewhere since the beginning of December, or even mid-November. A skating rink, Santa's house, houses with warm mulled wine and mead and other goodies come to the central square (market). In general, everything is in the best traditions of the Christmas market, although the scale is not the same as in large Polish cities.
Safety. What to watch out for
I wouldn't say that Katowice is a dangerous city. During my entire life here, I only found myself in an unpleasant situation once, and that was due to my stupidity.
Because of my work as a waitress, I had to return on foot a couple of times at 11:30 pm from a not very central area, and during the entire time no one bothered me at all. From which I conclude that walking at night is relatively safe.
It may not be the safest idea to be in parks or in the forest at night, although I doubt that this is the most traditional place to spend time during tourist trips.
Of course, keep in mind that sometimes there are drunk youth or some crazy people here, but where are they not? Therefore, in terms of safety, I would give Katowice 8 out of 10 points:
- “-1” for the fact that the girl is a little scared at night, and you can run into stupid boys who, under the influence of alcohol, consider themselves Apollos.
- And another “-1” for wild animals in areas remote from the center (close to forests). For example, there are a lot of wild boars on Ligota Akademiki; one night I came across a herd of 20 of them. To say that I was scared is an understatement.
Things to do
Historic Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Gory
If you are in your own car, I strongly advise you to get into the silver bath. Since we're in a mining town. The Silver Museum is located 46 kilometers from Katowice (Historic Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry).
Firstly, there you will go down into the mines (so be sure to take warm but comfortable clothes with you), and secondly, you will be given an incredibly cool and educational excursion.
The secret of this place is that it is one big marketing ploy. The museum is called a “silver mine,” but in reality only bronze is mined there. As the guide said: “Well, who will go to look at the bronze?! Yes, for silver!” Nevertheless, the museum is very interesting. Inside it, for example, you will ride in boats along an underwater river.
Cost of visit: from 35 to 50 PLN, depending on the number of people in the group and the language in which the tour is conducted. Check the museum for current prices.
How to get there: From the main station in Katowice, take the train in the direction of Tarnowskie Góry, get off after 55 minutes at stop 11 (Lubliniec). At the exit from the station you will see bus stops, you need bus number 735, which will go in the direction of Bytom Dworzec, after 4 stops get off at Tarnowskie Góry Kopalnia Zabytkowa. The bus stops right next to the entrance to the museum.
Katowice Muchowiec Park
If you drive to Katowice Muchowiec Park, you can see how young pilots are taught to fly airplanes. The spectacle is worthwhile, and it’s also free.
How to get there: to get here, you need to take bus 110 from Katowice Dworzec and go 8 stops. In addition, there is another large Park Leśny, where Juwenalia took place two years in a row.
Shopping and shops
The shops
The most popular place in Katowice for shopping is Galeria Katowicka, Silesia City Center And Supersam. These three places are relatively close to the center. For example, Galeria is the center, Supersam is located at the intersection of Stawowa Mickewicza streets, and Silesia City Center can be reached by taking trams No. 0, 1, 6 and 19 from the market.
Everyone goes to these huge shopping centers for shopping and just to somehow kill the weekend.
If you want to find crazy things at a low price, go to the outlet. To do this, at the Aleja Korfantego stop, take buses E or J (I was not mistaken, this is the “number” of the bus) from PKM, they take you to the Fashion House Outlet Center Sosnowiec, where you can find crazy things at a low price. But I would advise you to be careful, since some stores present torn clothes or with some huge stains.
Shopping Features
It seems to me that the law of any sale is that there will be a holiday soon, which is why in Katowice the biggest discounts are before the New Year, Easter or Christmas. There are also end-of-season sales.
By the way, if you are hunting for something special and locally produced, then I have to disappoint you, because there are no local brands here.
Bars. Where to go
If you want to get into a good bar or pub, then just go to Mariacka street and go wherever you want. There are establishments for a wide variety of wallets and audiences.
The most popular place is probably Pijalnia wódki with huge glass walls and crowds of students and their professors inside. It is never quiet here, there are always a lot of people. Be prepared for the fact that if you are a girl, you will be “hooked” on every chair here. And yes, don’t think that they only drink vodka here; behind the monotonous name there is a whole gallery of different types of beer, cocktails and other alcoholic drinks. Prices: 1 EUR on average for drinks, 2 EUR on average for food.
For those who love jazz/blues, there is an option to go to Katofonia jazz & blues club, especially since it is located right there on Mariacka. Again, a lot of people, but still not as crowded as the previous version. Prices: from 2 to 4 EUR.
In addition, you can look at:
- Browariat (open from 17:00 to 23:00) - ul. Francuska, 11;
- Old Cuban Cocktail Bar 9 (from 16:00 to 23:00, on Friday and Saturday until 02:00) - Wojewódzka, 26A;
- Kominiarz Shisha Bar (from 15:00 to 00:00) is a hookah bar at Wojewódzka, 24;
- Highway Club (from 17:00 to 00:00) - Sienkiewicza, 28.
Clubs and nightlife
Since a huge number of students live in Katowice, there are many clubs here. Moreover, there is such a large percentage of “our” students here that institutions can mix “Kalinka” or other Russian and Ukrainian songs. It is difficult to predict whether there will be good music in the club today, since everything depends on the DJ.
Basically, until 23:00, entry to the club is free, after which the price ranges from 1 to 2 EUR. Clubs are open from Thursday to Saturday, and are open until 04:00 on average (they may close earlier if there are not many people).
My favorite in terms of music and pleasant atmosphere remains Bavitto(plac Miarki, 6), but you need to take into account that the dance floor with really cool music is very small, so be prepared for a sudden elbow in the eye or between the ribs (if you are a dwarf like me).
Absolutely everyone in the city knows about the club Pomarancza. The only bad thing is that the music there is extremely strange and it’s very difficult to get into the normal music. The dance floor is big, but I don’t really want to dance here. Address: Matejki, 3.
Everyone has also heard about the club Spiż. It is famous for the fact that entry here is permitted for those aged 14 years. However, there is a huge dance floor so everyone can fit. Address: Opolska, 22.
In almost all clubs in Katowice, entry is from the age of 21, except, as I already said, Spiża. There is no dress code for the clubs, so you can come either in flip-flops or in an evening dress. Only, for example, in Bavitto on Thursdays and sometimes on Fridays there are different discounts for those who come in a themed costume. For example, there are evenings for girls in shorts (if you come in shorts, you get free entry and a free shot), and on Halloween people in costumes have free entry all night.
Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift
He talks in detail about souvenirs in Poland, but for Katowice souvenirs can only be found in the Silesian Museum or in the souvenir shop at the station. To be honest, I haven’t found any special souvenirs here in three years. Maybe you can buy silver at the Silver Museum, but you still need to get to it somehow.
How to get around the city
They say that Katowice has the most developed transport system in Poland, and, of course, it’s hard to disagree with this. Probably, the only well-functioning system was in, where I also had to spend a lot of time.
There are buses literally everywhere, if for some reason a bus doesn’t go somewhere, then a tram will go, if not a tram, then an electric train, if not that, then a helicopter, there is always the option of walking.
Everyone is immediately struck by the bus schedule in Katowice. They're moving around here every minute. Just 10 minutes (20 minutes on weekends) and a new carriage is delivered.
Buying tickets
The price of tickets depends on how many areas and transfers you need transport for.
Single use passes
If you want to ride once, I advise you to buy the cheapest tickets for 0.60 EUR (3.20 PLN). With them it is possible to transfer within 15 minutes. That is, you get on one bus and if within 15 minutes you need to change to another or to a tram, then you do not need to buy a new ticket. The same system with tickets for 0.80 EUR (3.80 PLN), however, here you can make a transfer within half an hour. A ticket for 1 EUR (4.80 PLN) allows you to change seats within an hour.
Another feature of tickets is their validity for several cities. The cheapest option is valid only in Katowice, the middle one allows you to travel through one neighboring community, the most expensive allows you to travel through 4 neighboring communities.
I advise you to buy tickets in small shops with newspapers and from vending machines at the bus stop. Moreover, there are three types of machines:
- small yellow ones (the same ones are in Prague),
- new large with touch screen,
- even newer ones with the possibility of cashless payment.
The machines are easy to understand - choose the ticket you need and insert coins (or pay by card).
Important: try not to buy tickets on the bus or tram from the driver. Since there is only the last type of the most expensive tickets (for 1 EUR).
Tickets for buses and trams are absolutely identical. But sometimes tickets purchased from different machines/drivers/stores are different in appearance - don't worry, they are all valid. And at first I kept thinking that they were selling me some kind of wrong tickets.
Reusable travel cards
In addition to one-time tickets, in Katowice you can buy tickets for one/two days, and for one/two weeks. The price of such a ticket includes unlimited transfers and the ability to travel to four neighboring communities:
- for 24 hours - 3.50 EUR (16 PLN),
- for 48 hours - 5.70 EUR (26 PLN),
- for 5 days - 9.50 EUR (42 PLN),
- for 7 days - 10.60 EUR (48 PLN),
- for 14 days - 18.80 EUR (85 PLN).
There are also permanent discounts for pensioners and students with an ISIC card. With it, the ticket price will be 50% less.
Current prices for all tickets, as well as schedules and route maps can be checked on the KZK GOP website (it is possible to translate the site into Russian).
Taxi. What features exist
What I like about Katowice is a taxi that doesn’t immediately kill you with its price. Although, of course, you need to know where to call and where to get it (or better not to get it).
Let me start with the fact that from Katowice airport to the center a taxi will cost 40 EUR (160 zł). Payment is made according to the meter, for one kilometer you will have to pay 2 zlotys, but, like every insolent taxi at the airport, they have a hidden tariff called: the return of the taxi driver will be paid by the client. Therefore, you will have to pay the price for 40 km to the center and another 40 km for the taxi to return to its parking place.
To find a cheap taxi, you need to order it by phone (this will always be cheaper). For example, a good taxi in Katowice by number: 32 191 91 and 32 723 23 23 and 32 201 42 00. The price ranges from 0.80 to 1.40 EUR for the basic tariff and from 0.30 to 0.40 EUR per kilometer (on weekdays from 06:00 to 22:00).
If you notify the operator in advance, non-cash payment will be possible.
As for places where taxis are better Not take:
- in the underground parking of Galeria Katowicka, because the rates there are crazy.
- in the parking lot on St. Andrew's Square, where one of the main taxi ranks is located.
Lifehacks
In general, to save money, I would advise taking this whole matter to the point of absurdity, for example, walking 300-400 meters from the taxi stand and calling him by phone. In 95% of cases, the taxi will leave from this parking lot, but its fare will be cheaper.
In addition, I would advise you to find out in advance from the operator how much a taxi will cost, firstly, you will not be deceived, and secondly, there will be no unpleasant surprises when you do not have enough money.
Trams
Riding trams in Katowice is a pleasure. Almost all the vehicles are new and very comfortable, so if you have the opportunity to ride them, be sure to take advantage! The tickets needed here are the same as for buses.
There is a stamped ticket system inside the salon. You must find an orange/brown/yellow hanging box with a small hole where you can insert part of the ticket and wait until the machine makes a characteristic printing sound.
Tickets are checked once every five years, but I still wouldn’t advise taking risks, because no one will feel sorry for you, and you will have to pay the fine on the spot (or at the police station).
By the way, keep in mind that on trams it is very inconvenient to buy a ticket from the driver, because according to safety rules, he can only answer you at the stop (and this despite the fact that he cannot stay at the stop longer than the required couple of seconds).
Metro
Unfortunately, there is no metro in Katowice, although I can’t even imagine this with such an abundance of mines.
Buses
I loved and continue to love the Katowice bus interchanges. It is difficult to imagine a more convenient system. And although there are some nuances, such as a line with a detour on the highway, nevertheless, using the bus here is a pleasure.
All schedules and lines can be viewed on the KZK GOP website.
As for the strange detour on the route: we are talking about line No. 12, the most popular in the city. It covers all the most important places: Center, Central University, dormitories and residential areas. But in the very center it has a small hook. She visits Galeria Katowicka twice. First, she comes here and leaves for a circle in the center, and then with people from the center she stops by the station again and goes to the residential areas and hostels. It’s difficult to immediately understand in words, but in fact, with your first experience of traveling on this line, you will immediately understand everything.
One of the main rules that you must follow on the bus is to have your ticket stamped. This is done in small orange and yellow machines that are attached inside the car. The ticket is inserted into this machine and, after a characteristic printing sound, it stamps on a piece of paper the date and time when you boarded the bus.
Of course, you can ride as a hare on the bus, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The check always comes unexpectedly, is dressed in civilian clothes and does not particularly spare the stowaways. The fine for traveling without a ticket will be 20 EUR (90 PLN).
Transport rental
Car enthusiasts over 21 years old can rent a car if they wish. If you speak good English or even better Polish, then I advise you to rent a car from local companies or from branches of international companies in Katowice.
For example, AVIS and CARNET provide good services. Offers from these and other carriers can be viewed and compared.
In order to rent a car, you will need to provide:
- Driver's license (local authorities allow the use of a Russian driver's license).
- Credit card.
- Passport.
- In some cases, a copy of your airline ticket may be required.
The price of gasoline as of 2017 is 1 EUR (4.53 PLN) per liter of E95.
Repeat the movement in a circle!
Seriously, Katowice is considered a city with one of the most difficult traffic conditions in Poland. There are a lot of strange junctions and an unreal number of roundabouts.
Keep in mind that at night the police can simply stop everyone and ask them to take a breathalyzer test.
For each violation you will have to pay a rather large fine, the amount of which can range from 10 to 150 EUR. I repeat: don’t look at how the Poles drive, because the traffic police is more picky about cars with foreign license plates.
Friends, you often ask, so we remind you! 😉
Flights- you can compare prices from all airlines and agencies!
Hotels- don’t forget to check prices from booking sites! Don't overpay. This !
Rent a Car- also an aggregation of prices from all rental companies, all in one place, let's go!
