Ams caves (Сoves dels Hams) on (Mallorca), or the cave of fishhooks, is another famous attraction of the island of Mallorca, the second most popular among karst caves after. The caves owe their name to the amazing shape of stalactites - they really look like fishhooks. The grotto, in which such amazing formations are located, is called very romantically: Angel's Dream.
The history of the discovery of Coves dels Hams
The Ams caves in Mallorca were discovered, one might say, by accident: in 1905, the speleologist Pedro Caldentey Santandreu (his surname is sometimes still read as Santandru, but the first option is still more correct) in search of an onyx deposit broke off a piece of rock and opened the entrance to the caves .
Santandreu was so amazed by the beauties that opened up to him that he decided to make them available to everyone. To illuminate the caves, he used an innovative technology at that time: the caves were illuminated with electricity, for the generation of which Santandreu developed a whole system consisting of a water mill, a water tank, a waterfall and a special turbine. We owe this innovation to the fact that, in the opinion of Caldentey, the traditional carbide lighting for that time could not demonstrate all the beauties of the cave.
Ams caves today
Today, the lighting of the coves dels hams is carried out using a system designed by Don Pedro's son, Lorenzo Caldentei. The lighting solution perfectly emphasizes the unique color diversity of the cave.
At a depth of 30 meters in the cave there is a lake called "Venetian Lake". Visitors who go down there are shown films or performances of opera singers right on the walls and vaults of the cave.
Excursion to the cavesYou can book an excursion, which, in addition to Сoves dels Hams, includes other places of interest in Mallorca: in Manacor, which produces artificial pearls (so high quality that it is quite difficult to distinguish them from real ones) to visiting the caves and the Els Calderers estate, the first mention of which in the historical chronicle dates back to 1285, after visiting Сoves dels Hams.
When can you visit the caves?
If you plan to visit the caves on your own, then you will need a contact phone number, by which you can find out the start time and duration of excursions on the day you have chosen: +34 971820988.
The caves receive visitors from April 1 to the end of October from 10-00 to 18-00, the rest of the time - until 17-00.
By the way, the Dragon Caves are very close, and you can visit both attractions "at a time"; if you are traveling with children, it is better for you to start with the Dragon Caves.
Literally crammed with various sights of both man-made and natural origin. Speaking of the latter, one cannot fail to mention the famous Ams caves. This is one of the most visited places, located near Porto Cristo, which annually attracts tens of thousands of tourists from all over the world. The unique, mysterious, underground world of stalactites is complemented by a unique light installation that creates a truly magical atmosphere.
Marine erosion, as well as soil with a high content of lime, contributed to the creation of ideal conditions for the formation of a developed system of caves, of which there are more than 4,000 in Mallorca. In the old days they were used to store contraband and even as housing. Today, most of the underground voids are privately owned, but the most interesting ones are open to everyone.
Back in the 15th century, the theologian Vincent Ferrer claimed that Mallorca resembled an inverted earthenware bowl. Of course, such a statement is a bit exaggerated, but speleologists know more than 200 caves, some of which are so large that they could easily accommodate a cathedral or an entire football field.
Especially popular among tourists are the so-called Dragon Caves, the formation of which dates back to the Miocene era. The main feature of this complex is the opportunity to go boating on a large underground lake, listening to live music and enjoying a colorful light show. The caves of Arta are considered among the highest in Europe and are notable for stalagmites and stalactites. unusual shapes and sizes.
However, the famous Ams caves are considered the most famous, because it is here that most of the tourists come. Long galleries, unique illumination of the vaults, a huge underground lake and live music leave no one indifferent, giving a lot of positive emotions and unforgettable impressions.
History and features of the attraction
The cave system called Cuevas del Hams was first discovered in 1905 by the Spanish speleologist Pedro Caldento, who was searching for onyx in the local mountains. In the process of work, a huge piece of rock that broke away from the mountain exposed voids that no one had heard of before. Caldento appreciated the potential of the site and later ran electricity there using a homemade generator. The illuminated vaults of the caves seemed to transport visitors to other worlds.
The caves got their name from the word "fish hook", which is pronounced as Ams. The fact is that inside there is a huge number of stalactites bent into bizarre shapes, reminiscent of fishing tackle. The arches of the main cave are illuminated with the latest lighting technology, creating a stunning blue illumination. In addition, here in the impromptu auditorium created by nature itself, where one of the vaults acts as a giant screen, visitors can watch an interesting documentary, telling about the history of Mallorca from ancient times to the modern period, learn about the process of formation of cave systems and their discovery. In addition, various exhibitions, expositions, as well as other thematic events are constantly held here.
Information for tourists
If you decide to spend an unforgettable holiday in Spain, be sure to add a visit to the Ams caves to your program. And in order to get the maximum dose of emotions and impressions, it is recommended not to miss an unusual concert called "Magic Mozart". It is held daily at a depth of 30 meters below the surface of the earth on an underground lake - the Venetian Sea. This is the deepest point of the entire complex. The musicians are placed in a boat decorated with lit candles and perform the works of the great composer, accompanied by a magnificent light show.
The Ams complex is accessible to tourists all year round, and the entrance ticket for adults and children is only 9 euros. A visit to the famous caves of the island of Mallorca is embedded in many excursion tours, which provides an excellent opportunity to see more sights.
How to get there
In order to get to the Ams caves from Palma de Mallorca, you need to drive to the city of Manacor or Porto Cristo. You can use the services of several bus routes or book a one-day excursion, which will cost 14-17 euros per person. In this case, a comfortable bus will take you to the place. You can also rent a car, but not everyone can afford it. It is almost impossible to get there on foot, as the attraction is located at a considerable distance from major cities.
Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearic Islands. The geographical landscape of the island consists of two mountain ranges Serra de Tramuntana and Serres de Llevant, located parallel to each other and oriented from southwest to northeast. Between these two mountain ranges stretches the fertile valley "Pla" with small hills. The mountain ranges on the island, consisting mainly of limestone rocks, are riddled with many karst caves formed over millennia due to erosion. The most famous of them will be discussed in this article.
cavesdragon(Cuevas del Drach)
The most popular with tourists and the largest on the island are Dragon Caves (Cuevas del Drach) or Drak caves - as they are often called. Located on the rocky northeast coast, indented with numerous bays and inlets, not far from the small port and the cozy town of Porto Cristo, these caves are one of the most mysterious local attractions.
The name of the caves is Cuevas del Drach, which means “Dragon Cave” in Catalan. The existence of the cave has been known since time immemorial. According to existing legends, the entrance to the cave was guarded by a formidable dragon with the body of a snake and the wings of a bat, who guarded the numerous treasures hidden in it. Local legends also tell of numerous treasures that were hidden in these caves by pirates and the mysterious order of the Knights Templar. Maybe in order to locals less interested in these dungeons, a story about a terrible dragon was invented. The memory of these events has been lost for centuries, and only legends have survived to this day. However, thanks to the search for treasures of the Knights Templar, the first written mention of the caves appeared, which date back to 1338. Then, by written order of the governor of Mallorca, a group of soldiers was sent to search for the missing treasures of this mysterious order, rumors about which excited the entire island. But to the great disappointment, neither the treasures of the pirates nor the Templars could be found, however, the first plan of the caves was drawn up.
Thanks to the financial support of the Austrian Archduke Luis Salvador, a philanthropist and a great lover and connoisseur of the nature of Mallorca, the cave was better explored. The French speleologist Edouard Martel in 1886 studied and carefully mapped, in total, about 1300 meters of underground passages. In the very depths of the cave, a French speleologist discovered a huge crystal clear lake, the water of which has a constant temperature of 20°C. In honor of its discoverer, the lake got its name. Today Lake Martel is considered one of the largest underground lakes in the world, measuring 177 meters long, 40 meters wide and 9 meters deep.
Today, more than two kilometers of this unique natural creation has been studied, which combines a whole complex of caves: the White Cave, the Black Cave and the cave named after Archduke Luis Salvador. All these caves are interconnected and form a unique complex of the Dragon Caves.
One interesting fact is that the famous French science fiction writer Jules Verne, who visited Mallorca several times, mentions the Dragon Caves in his novel Clovis Dartetor.
In 1935, the Catalan engineer Carlos Bigas, known for creating the lighting of the Magic Fountain in Barcelona, completed a project for lighting the cave, representing a sunrise over Lake Martel. The auditorium of the cave, located on the shore of the lake, can accommodate up to 1100 people. As soon as the last visitors take their places, an amazing performance begins. On the smooth water surface of the underground lake, illuminated by soft light, boats appear with musicians sitting in them, performing classical pieces. A faint light, symbolizing the dawn, gradually fills the entire hall, and the entire cave is gradually filled with music and light. The sight is truly unforgettable. Immediately after the completion of this unusual concert, visitors can enjoy short trip on a boat on an underground lake.
The duration of the entire tour is approximately one hour. The length of the entire route is 1200 meters. The temperature in the caves is constant, and is 20°C with a humidity of 80%. For the tour, it is recommended to wear comfortable sports shoes, because in some parts of the cave the surface can be wet and slippery. Photo and video shooting inside the cave is prohibited.

cavesams(Cuevas dels Hams)
The next most visited are Ams caves (Cuevas dels Hams), or Caves of Fishhooks. These caves are located near the Dragon Caves, and if you wish, you can combine a visit to both. Hams is a Majorcan word meaning "fish hook". The caves owe their name to amazingly shaped stalactites, very similar to bent fishhooks. This unusual creation of nature can be seen in one of the halls of the cave with the romantic name "angels dream".
The Ams caves were accidentally discovered on March 2, 1905, when a speleologist and one of the pioneers of tourism in Mallorca, Don Pedro Caldentey, while searching for onyx, broke off a large piece of rock, discovered the entrance to a previously unknown cave.
Caldentey showed great interest in the caves he discovered, in an effort to show the beauty of the underworld of the island, he introduced technological innovations that were advanced for those times: artistic lighting of caves - electric lighting. Electricity for this was generated using a water mill with a turbine installed. The resulting electricity was enough to light the cave for 16 hours without interruption.
Today, the Ams caves use new technologies to share their secrets with all visitors. Today, an original combination of digital technologies connected with the environment of the cave is used here. The grottoes of the cave have been turned into a modern cinema, and its walls into a screen. Passing from the cinema hall into the cave, you will get the opportunity to see unusual stalactites, thanks to which the cave got its name. At the deepest point of your journey, there is an underground lake, proudly called the Sea of Venice, where you can enjoy a small concert and a light show.
Photo and video shooting in the cave is allowed without a flash.
Working hours:
From April to October, the caves are open from 10:00 to 18:00.
