Sights of Bol
Bol itself is a cute, low-rise town with two rows of old stone houses. There are many small fishing and pleasure boats in the harbor. The main local seaside gallery is the Branislav Dešković Gallery, which occupies the building of the former city hall from the Renaissance era. There is a good collection of Croatian art from the 20th century.
There are works by most of the leading figures in the national fine arts, including the sculptor Ivan Meštrović, the Dubrovnik expressionist Ivan Dulčić and the contemporary painter Edo Mutrić. A little further east is the 15th-century Dominican monastery, which occupies a beautiful position on a promontory near the central part of the city (Dominikanski samostan; daily 10:00-12:00 and 17:00-20:00).
Within its walls there is a small museum, which contains various antique amphorae, ancient Greek coins from Hvar and Vis, Cretan icons and the amazing painting “Madonna and Child” by Tintoretto from 1563. Through an arch in the residential block for pilgrims you can enter the monastery garden, facing the sea. The main thing that attracts tourists in the vicinity of Bol is Cape Zlatni Rat, which is located twenty minutes west of the center. There is a beautiful tree-lined pedestrian street leading there.
The cape is covered with small pebbles and resembles a long finger protruding into the sea. From year to year its shape changes slightly under the influence of seasonal winds. There are several large hotels behind the pedestrian street. At the height of summer, the cape can be crowded with tourists, but there is no need to go there. There are other good beaches and bays in the immediate vicinity, so there is plenty of space for everyone. Naturism is permitted on the far side of the headland and in adjacent bays.
Food, drink and nightlife in Bol
Most tourists stay in hotels with half board, so there are few restaurants and cafes in Bol. On the embankment there are several cafes selling soft drinks, coffee and ice cream. If the light music that almost constantly plays in Bol hotels is not enough for you, then you can go to the Faces night disco club. This concrete building stands on a hill at the northern entrance to the city. Concerts of Croatian pop stars take place there all summer.

In the vicinity of Bol
To the north of Cape Zlatni Rat you can see the Vidova Gora peak (778 meters). This is the highest point of all the Adriatic islands. You can get there along an asphalt road that departs from the Bol highway on the south side of the village of Nerezhishcha. There is also a well-marked hiking trail (2 kilometers) from the center of Bol. The trail heads uphill just past the Faces discotheque. In the summer, the small tavern at the top sometimes serves lamb cooked on a spit. However, most tourists climb the mountain simply to enjoy the wonderful view.
Cape Zlatni Rat and the city of Bol are visible on the left, and the islands of Vis and Vis loom in the distance. Approximately 12 kilometers from Bol on the west side of Mount Vidovy is the Blaca Desert (Tuesday-Sunday 8:00-17:00, opening hours may vary, check with the Bol or Suptara tourist office). The path there starts from Cape Zlatni Rat, passes through the village of Murvica, and then from Blaka Bay - inland, from the seashore. At first the road is asphalt, but then it turns into a dirt road. The walk takes three hours one way.
This is an easy hike on a slope above the sea. The only difficulty is that there is no shadow. You can make things easier for yourself if you take a boat to Blaka Bay and only walk from there. If you are driving, turn towards Mount Vidova halfway between Supetar and Bol, and then after about 2 kilometers turn right onto the dirt road leading to Blaka Bay. There is a sign at the turn. The road is not important, but, in principle, you can drive along it. From the end of the road, follow the path down through the deserted villages. In about forty minutes you will arrive at the monastery.
Hermitage was founded in 1588 by monks who fled the Turkish invasion. The last inhabitant of the desert, astronomer-enthusiast Niko Milicevic, lived here in the 30s of the 20th century. His property has been preserved, including a collection of antique watches and lithographs. You can also examine the cell and kitchen with darkened metal utensils by the open fireplace. Around the monastery, on the slopes of a narrow, bush-covered gorge, there are simple buildings.
On the first weekend after the Assumption (August 15), pilgrims from all over the island flock to the Blaka Monastery. On the way back along the Bol-Supetar road, it makes sense to take a short detour to the north to visit the mountaintop village of Nerežišće. There, on the roof of the local parish church, a small pine tree grows. A living sprout appeared a hundred years ago. The tree, under such specific conditions, grew on its own, without any care, and took on a stocky shape reminiscent of a bonsai.

Hello, dear readers of the site “I and the World”! We are glad to welcome you again! What do you think is the largest city in the world and what is its name? In our new article we want to talk about cities and present the top 10 largest in the world by area and population.
10th place - New York - 1214.4 sq. km
America starts the list. If you look at the population for 2017, the city is small - 8,405,837 people. Quite young, about 400 years old.
In the territory where New York is now located there were Indian tribes. Arrows, dishes and other Indian attributes are found here. Throughout the 19th century, emigrants from different countries came here, due to which it grew. It includes several islands, the largest of which is Manhattan. People of almost all religions live here, but Christians predominate.
We give 9th place to Mexico City – 1485 sq. km
The population of the capital of Mexico is 9,100,000 people. Mexico City was founded by the Aztecs in 1325. According to legend, the Sun God ordered them to come to this place.
At the beginning of the 16th century, Mexico City was the most beautiful in the Western Hemisphere until it was destroyed during the reign of Cortez, but was soon rebuilt. It is located at an altitude of more than 2000 km above sea level and is surrounded by mountains.
London is in 8th place – 1572 sq. km
London is the capital of Great Britain and the largest city in the country. It was founded in 43 AD. e. There are now 8,600,000 people living in London.
The terrible plague of the 17th century claimed about 70,000 lives. This is a place of remarkable historical and architectural monuments: the Tower, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral and others.
We put Tokyo in 7th place - 2188.6 sq. km
But the population is quite large - 13,742,906 people. Tokyo is one of the modern cities and the capital of Japan. Even if you live here for a month, you won’t see all the sights.
The main part is solid concrete and wires. Tokyo was inhabited by tribes of people back in the Stone Age. Over the course of several years from 1703 to 2011, Tokyo suffered many earthquakes, and as a result of one of them, 142,000 people died at once.
In 6th place is Moscow – 2561.5 sq. km
Moscow is the capital of the Russian Federation, located between the Oka and Volga rivers. 12,500,123 people live here. In terms of length, Moscow is quite long - 112 km. It is an important tourist center in Russia.
The age of the city is still unknown exactly, but there is evidence that the first settlements appeared on this territory around 8 thousand years BC. e.
Middle of the top - Sydney - 12144 sq. km
The development and history of Australia began with a small settlement. 200 years ago the navigator Cook landed here. Sydney is the largest metropolis and capital of the state of New South Wales.
The capital is home to 4,500,000 people. The city is located in one of the beautiful bays of the world, where business skyscrapers coexist with cozy beaches, which are always full of tourists.
In 4th place is Beijing – 16,808 sq. km
Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China. Huge and noisy, its population numbers 21,500,000 inhabitants.
In the 13th century, it was almost completely burned by Genghis Khan, but rebuilt 43 years later in a different place. Here is a famous architectural monument - the Forbidden City - the residence of the rulers.
At the beginning of the 20th century it was occupied by the Japanese. After Russia's victory in World War II and the fall of Japan, the capital became free again.
We give 3rd place to Hangzhou – 16847 sq. km
The city has 8,750,000 inhabitants. The metropolis is famous for its tea plantations and natural beauty.
Previously, it was the capital of China, and now it is a major religious center. In the 19th century, as a result of an uprising, it was partially destroyed and restored in the 50s, where industry began to rapidly develop.
Weaving folk items, harvesting tea leaves, and making bamboo products are still done by hand.
In second place is Chongqing – 82,300 sq. km
Chongqing is the largest city in the world in terms of population, with about 32 million people living here. The highest population density is 600 people per square meter. km.
The metropolis arose 3,000 years ago and at that time was the capital of the kingdom of Ba. Now it is a huge industrial center. There is a large base for the production of automobiles - 5 factories and 400 - for the production of car parts. Real estate construction here is proceeding at such a fast pace that 10 years of construction for Moscow is 1 year for Chongqing. Old buildings are being demolished very actively, and skyscrapers are appearing in their place. It is more business than architectural. And the main attraction is the overpasses that entangle the entire city.
We give 1st place to the unusual city of Ordos - 86,752 sq. km
Ordos is a ghost town. Where is the strange metropolis, the largest in territory, but empty? In China, it began to be built 20 years ago for people involved in the extraction and sale of coal.
A large city was built with museums, theaters, and a stadium. There is everything for the life of a city dweller here. But almost no one wanted to move here. Over the past few years, the number of people has increased to 300,000. There are so few inhabitants in the huge settlement that even in broad daylight, the streets are completely empty.
Beautiful, abandoned houses, museums, cinemas. There are even unfinished buildings - there is no one to build for. Everywhere is clean and well-groomed. And silence! A metropolis inhabited by “ghosts”. There are several of these in China.
Also, there are cities beyond the Arctic Circle and living there is quite cold. The largest “cold” city is in Russia - Murmansk - 154.4 square meters. km. It is quite small in size and has a population of 298,096 people.
We showed you the ranking of major cities in the world with photos and descriptions. Ten different megacities, with different numbers of inhabitants, different lengths and architecture. 2018 will be a new year for everyone and everything, and our rankings may change. In the meantime, if you liked the information, share it with your friends.
Answer from Maxim Vygnansky[guru]
Everything flows, everything changes, and the list of the largest cities in the world also has to be revised.
Many large cities have grown so large that they have swallowed up nearby settlements and literally merged into agglomerations. And the question arose: what is considered a city? Scientists have come up with a simple solution, writes the authoritative source demographia.com, a method for determining the actual city (continuous development) - using a light image. To do this, they take a picture of the city at night from an airplane and use the continuous light to determine the boundaries of the city, which areas are already part of the city and which are not. Brac is the most beautiful of Croatia's islands, an outstanding resort region of the Adriatic and an important wine-growing region of the country. As the third largest island in the Adriatic Sea, Brac is famous for its many kilometers of sand and pebble beaches, quaint rocky landscapes, sunny vineyards, mighty pine forests and graceful olive groves. The two main resorts for which the island of Brac is famous are Bol and Supetar.
Bol resort on the island of Brac, Croatia
The town of Bol on the island of Brac has become very popular among tourists due to both natural-climatic and historical-cultural factors - unique medieval buildings have been preserved here. In addition, Bol has a favorable geographical location and convenient transport links with the mainland.
Bol resort, Croatia
A modern resort, Bol in former times was an ordinary fishing village. In addition to fishing, snow-white limestone (the so-called “Brac stone”), which is used to decorate the famous White House in Washington, has long been mined in Bol. Today it is a real calling card of tourist Croatia. The beauty of a holiday in Bol is that in addition to seascapes, you can see beautiful mountain views here, since the city is located at the very foot of Vidova Gora, the highest point of the Croatian islands, whose height reaches 778 m.
One of the best beaches in the resort of Bol in Croatia is “Zlatni Rat” (“Golden Cape”), which is a vast pebble cape protruding 300 meters into the sea. On the landward side, the cape is buried in a pine grove, which is why the air here has truly unique healing properties.
Zlatni Rat Beach (Golden Cape)
Firstly, it is saturated with marine compounds, and secondly, with phytoncides and other volatile substances released by pine needles. Half of the beach is chosen by nudists (Croatia is considered the birthplace of naturism), and the other part has all the conditions for active recreation - windsurfing and tennis. For tennis players there is a tennis stadium and 20 clay courts.
Due to the fact that tourism in Croatia has been constantly developing and strengthening in recent years, the resort of Bol has created very comfortable living conditions for tourists. Depending on the capabilities and preferences of guests, travel agencies offer accommodation in a private villa, luxury apartments, a cozy private sector, traditional hotels or boarding houses.
Holidays in the resort of Bol (Brac island, Croatia)
The town of Bol on the island of Brac is the oldest settlement on the Croatian islands, so you can see the most interesting sights of bygone eras. Near the city there are several attractions that have glorified not only Bol, but the entire island of Brac. We are talking about the unique “Dragon Cave” with bas-reliefs of the Mother of God, angels, dragons and other mythical creatures preserved on its walls, as well as the Glagolitic stones “Blac Desert” - an ancient monastery complex carved into the rock masses of Vidova Gora. Tourists also visit with interest the small church of Saints Ivan and Tudor, a museum in the monastery building, which contains unique works of art, ancient coins and amphorae found during excavations on the island and during sea expeditions.
The beach, walks along the coast, sports, excursion and educational routes - all this gives Bol during the day, and with the onset of evening, another night life wakes up in the resort town, full of fun and joyful hubbub. A large number of restaurants, cafes, discos and other entertainment venues are ready to work until the last client, giving a festive atmosphere and providing a feeling of a complete and memorable holiday.

The name of the city comes from the Latin word vallum - “fortress”.

Previously, Bol was a village inhabited by fishermen, sailors and winegrowers, but since 1923 the fate of the city changed dramatically, people from different countries began to come to it on vacation. And not just a few people per season, but thousands. The best time to holiday here is July and August.
Bol's Zlatni Rat (Golden Cape) beach is the most popular in Croatia, changing its shape depending on the tides.

Separately, it should be said about the cuisine, which is typical for the entire island of Brac and Bol in particular. Brac is an island, which means that dishes are prepared from more than 30 species of fish and shellfish. The food is incredibly tasty, healthy and very beautiful, for example, grilled lamb, prosciutto, vegetables in incredible combinations. Beaches of Bol
One of the best beaches here, located in the south of the island near Bol, is called Zlatni Rat (Golden Cape or Golden Horn). Half of the cape is a nudist beach. Zlatni Rat is an ideal place for windsurfing and tennis (20 clay courts).
There are sea urchins in the sea in the Bol area; it is better to stay away from them so that your vacation does not turn into a complete treatment.
Entertainment and attractions in Bol
Near Bol there are the most famous attractions of the island of Brac: Vidova Gora, Golden Cape Beach, Dragon's Cave, Glagolitic Monastery of Blaca.
Golden Cape is an unusual place in itself, attracting travelers from all over the world, and besides, archaeologists found ruins of a Roman rustic villa- rural villas in open areas. Vidova Gora nearby is the highest peak on the islands of the entire Adriatic Sea (778 m). At its top, the most courageous tourists can see the ruins of the Church of St. Vid, in whose honor the mountain got its name, as well as benches, a cafe, and an observation deck.
In the Bolska Kruna mountain range, at the foot of which Bol stands, there was once a Glagolitic monastery Drakonova Cave(Zmajeva spilja or Drakonjina spilja) 15th century. Monk Polzhich lived here, who managed to turn a lonely monastery into a famous monastery. In the Dragon Cave they began to store handwritten spiritual chronicles - Glagolitic letters, one of them, created in the 13th century, is now kept in Dominican Museum.
In the same mountain, but on the western side, away from populated areas, there is a rock carved Blaca Monastery(Pustinja Blaca). In the 15th century Glagolitic monks arrived here from the mainland of the country, escaping from the Turks, and established an entire city-state in the mountain. There is everything you need for life, including premises for the production of wine and olive oil - the monks exchanged them for the goods they needed. Even the bee hives were carved into stone! But the Blaca Monastery is not only an amazing architectural structure, but also the center of scientific life on the island. It has a large library with books in German, globes, powerful telescopes, astronomical maps, and also operated a school for rural residents.
An interesting attraction of Bol is the art gallery named after. Branislav Deskovic Bold style at the city hall. The most famous Croatian artists, including contemporary ones, exhibit here.

The local club offers speedboat excursions for its members. The program includes visits to nearby islands, caves, of which there are many in Croatia, and coastal cities.
