The best airlines in the world. Best airlines in Russia Airlines by rating
The holiday season is approaching, which means that the demand for air carrier services will increase significantly. Fear of flying causes many travelers to choose an airline primarily based on safety ratings.
Over the past 16 years, the auditing company Jacdec (Germany) has been ranking the safest airlines in the world. Since 2018, instead of the Safety Index, which was used for 15 years, the Safety Risk Index is used.
To determine the indicator, the following data is considered:
- Information about incidents (accidents, disasters) over the past 30 years, taking into account the number of passengers transported and the total flight distance. The presence of incidents that did not result in an accident during the same period of time. Number of lost aircraft that cannot be recovered.
- Various airline performance indicators, including aircraft age, safety inspections by international organizations (IOSA, IKAO).
- Additional factors (state of airport infrastructure, weather conditions).
- Emirates;
- Norwegian;
- Virgin Atlantic;
- EasyJet;
- Finnair;
- Eithad Airways;
- Spirit Airlines;
- Jetstar Airways;
- Air Arabia.
The Russian company Aeroflot ranks 73 out of 100 on this list.
Experts from the Swiss Air Transport Agency (ATRA) believe that one of the main criteria (there are 15 in total) when compiling a safety rating should be the level of training of pilots and air traffic controllers. According to 2014 data, among the leaders are Air China, Delta Air Line, Air France KLM Group, US Airways Group.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has developed its own system for assessing safety and reliability - the SAFA coefficient. To determine it, planes landing in the EU are checked at 54 points. If a certain value of the coefficient is exceeded, airlines are placed under special control of the European Commission. Research data is not publicly available.
How to choose an airline for safety
If you are puzzled by choosing an air carrier for the first time, information about their types and varieties of flights will not be superfluous.
Types of airlines
- Long-haul. They operate flights lasting 6 hours or more.
- Medium-haul. Their route network is dominated by flights taking less than 6 hours.
- Semi-discounters. They attract passengers with tickets at a lower price than those offered by medium-haul companies. However, in-flight meals are offered for an additional fee, and there are restrictions on the amount of luggage.
- Low-cost airline. We offer low ticket prices excluding additional services. Thus, the cost of luggage, for example, may be equal to the amount paid for the ticket. The carrier has the right to cancel any flight. When choosing a discount company, you need to weigh all the pros and cons so that the benefit from the low price of the flight is not offset by the lack of services that are important to you.
Types of flights
- One way (one or more flights);
- Both ways. The journey begins and ends at the same point and takes place along the same route on aircraft of the same company.
- Round. In the opposite direction they fly by a different route or on a plane of another carrier.
Passenger service classes
- First;
- Business Class;
- Economy class.
They differ from each other in the comfort of the seats, the size of baggage carried without payment, the quality of the menu, and the availability of additional services.
Both “classic” and low-cost air carriers have their leaders, who are very popular among passengers, known for their reliability and level of service, and top the top lines of various ratings. If we talk about world air carriers, then these are, for example, Lufthansa, Emirates, Air France - KLM, AirNew Zealand, VirginAtlantic. When planning budget flights, you should pay attention to the airlines AirAsia, Ryanair, EasyJet, Germanwings, Red Wings, and Pobeda.
It would be useful to familiarize yourself with the global airline safety rating, as well as domestic Russian reviews and studies.
An important criterion for a carrier’s safety is the age of the aircraft; the younger it is, the better (although with proper maintenance, aircraft can last for many years, according to statistics, accidents occur more often with older models). For those who understand the topic, additional food for thought can be obtained by knowing the type of aircraft. For example, the Boeing 767 is designed to carry up to 240 passengers, which can be significant if you don't like crowded company.

List of the best representatives of charter companies
The rating of Russian charter airlines may include many lists depending on the selected parameters. The most complete rating, taking into account the totality of the data obtained, includes the three best representatives of this segment.
The first one is I Fly. The company operates flights to popular resort cities. The largest number of flights is carried out to the south of Russia. The fleet includes four aircraft. The reasons for positive customer reviews are punctuality and reasonable prices.
The interior of the Airbus A330-300 airline I Fly
The Royal Flight company operates flights from Moscow to various tourist destinations, the number of which includes up to forty routes. The carrier works closely with the travel agency Coral Travel. Azur Air is famous for its high passenger traffic: the company serves approximately two million passengers per year. One of the company's most frequent partners in the tourism industry is Anex Tour. This list covers just three leading positions in an extensive list of offers from various airlines. That doesn't mean other companies aren't worth considering.
When choosing an air carrier, three factors play a major role: comfort, cost of flight and reliability of the airline. To help you navigate the large number of offers on the air transportation market, we have compiled a 2019 rating of Russian airlines in terms of flight safety.
It includes the top 10 airlines, selected according to:
- World Airlines Safety Index compiled by the German audit bureau Jacdec.
- Rating of world airlines 2019 AirlineRatings.
- Statistics 2018-19 by the number of aircraft and their newness among Russian airlines.
- Customer ratings on various review sites.
10 Red Wings Airlines
The former Airlines 400 has established itself as a reliable Russian airline and at one time was even the carrier of the Russian national football team. However, in 2012, a Tu-204 crash occurred at Vnukovo airport, after which the Federal Air Transport Agency suspended the certificate of Red Wings Airlines as the operator of the crashed aircraft.
5 years after the license was renewed, the company had another incident. In 2018, a Tu-204-100 engine caught fire. The plane had to make an emergency landing in Ufa; none of the passengers or personnel of the airliner were injured.
Currently, Red Wings Airlines has 12 aircraft at its disposal, the average age of which is 16.4 years.
9 Nordwind Airlines
According to the Federal Air Transport Agency for 2017, Nordwind Airlines was in ninth place in the list of the largest airlines in Russia. The number of people who used its services exceeded 3.5 million. Three significant advantages of this carrier are low prices, excellent work of flight attendants and the availability of soft drinks.
An incident was associated with one of the Nordwind Airlines planes, after which the Federal Air Transport Agency banned all Russian civil aircraft from flying over Syria until the end of the civil war. In 2013, pilots of an airplane flying from Sharm el-Sheikh to Kazan noticed explosions of two missiles (presumably) fired from the ground. Fortunately, the plane was not damaged.
The airline's fleet includes 24 aircraft, the average age of which is over 12 years.
8 Yamal
One of the most reliable Russian air carriers in 2014 was awarded as the best helicopter operator, the best passenger carrier on domestic routes and the best air carrier of passengers on regional routes.
As of the beginning of 2019, there are not too many aircraft in the Yamal air fleet - 37 - but they are quite young, on average 11 years old.
Passengers speak positively about the professionalism of the pilots and praise the good work of the staff. However, Yamal is criticized for frequent delays and cancellations of flights.
7 Aurora
According to the user rating (reviews collected by the Tutu.ru service), the Aurora airline was in fourth place, thanks to the skill of the pilots, the friendliness and skill of the flight attendants, punctuality and the price-quality ratio of services.
Aurora specializes in flights between cities of the Far East and Siberia, but does not neglect more exotic destinations such as Korea, Japan and China.
As of 2019, the fleet of one of the best airlines in Russia includes 21 aircraft, their average age is 13.8 years.
6 UTair
In 2017, Rosaviatsiya named UTair the most punctual airline in Russia. 98.8% of flights were completed on schedule.
Currently, UTair serves more than 150 destinations (of which 60 are available only to customers of this air carrier) and has a fleet of 65 aircraft. Among them is the Sukhoi Superjet 100, which serves a number of destinations from Vnukovo (to Kazan-Nalchik, Arkhangelsk and Ulyanovsk). The average age of the aircraft is 16.9 years.
5 Ural Airlines
This is the fifth largest air carrier in the Russian Federation and is currently the only airline in the Ural region that can offer customers the choice of flying to two Moscow airports at once - Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo.
The Ural Airlines fleet includes 47 aircraft and 19 more are on order. The average age of the aircraft is 14.2 years.
4 Victory
Even the capital Vrungel said: “Whatever you call the yacht, that’s how it will sail.” And living up to its name, Pobeda Airlines is successfully making its way in the stormy sea of Russian business.
This subsidiary of Aeroflot has chosen the niche of low-cost transportation, and in this field it feels very comfortable. As evidenced by the huge passenger traffic, the cheapest airline in Russia transported 7 million people in 2018 - and impressive revenue, which for 9 months of 2018 amounted to 26.4 billion rubles.
Currently, there are 23 aircraft in the Pobeda fleet and 27 more are on order. The average age of the aircraft in operation is 3.7 years. 3.
3 Russia
One of the subsidiaries of the leader in the ranking of the best Russian airlines is located in the Northern capital and carries out more than half of all air transportation from its hub airport Pulkovo. Its flight geography includes over 140 destinations, including the Far East and Crimea.
Passengers praise this airline for its punctuality and excellent condition of its aircraft.
Rossiya has 63 aircraft at its disposal, the average age of which is 13.1 years. 2. S7 Airlines
2 S7 Airlines
One of two Russian airlines included in the top 100 most reliable airlines in the world according to Jacdec. This Russian carrier appeared in 1992 (originally under the name Sibir) and quickly became one of the best European airlines. And these are not unfounded statements, but the opinion of the British agency SKYTRAX, which in 2013-2016 included S7 Airlines among the top three airlines in Eastern Europe and among the top five regional European airlines.
In January 2019, S7 Airlines had 95 aircraft in its fleet. Their average age is 10.3 years.
1 Aeroflot is the best airline in Russia
The second and last representative of Russia, awarded a place in the selection of the safest airlines according to Jacdec. This air carrier is constantly in the news, because its history began back in the times of the USSR (since 1923); and for many members of the older generation there is no alternative to Aeroflot.
Aeroflot has an extensive fleet of aircraft - 253 aircraft - and at the same time a very young one. The average age of aircraft is 4.3 years. And by 2020, Russia’s best airline plans to expand its fleet by another 184 aircraft, 126 of which will be the latest Russian-made Sukhoi SuperJet-100.
Summing up the results of 2017, the Federal Air Transport Agency published brief statistics on the work of civil aviation in the Russian Federation. The big picture for the participants rating of Russian airlines 2018 looks good. The air transportation market continues to develop, and almost all reliable Russian airlines included in the list demonstrated an average increase in the number of passengers and kilometers flown by 15%. At the same time, the weight of the top five airlines continues to grow. If in 2017 they occupied 67.4% of the total volume, then in 2018 it was already 85%.

The rating of the largest airlines in Russia opens with Nordwind Airlines, also known as “North Wind”. Over the past year, the number of passengers amounted to 3.5 million people and increased by 95% compared to 2016. Passenger turnover also showed growth, increasing by 44%.
One of the largest charter carriers in Russia, which transported more than 2.2 million passengers in 2017, was called to the carpet by the Federal Air Transport Agency in the summer of 2016 due to constant long flight delays of up to several tens of hours. The carrier promised to take action. If the company fails to arrange regular flights at the exact time, the company faces restrictions on transportation.
Azur Air was a subsidiary of UTair, but two years ago it set out on its own. In 2017, the number of passengers of the company amounted to 3.6 million people, almost 2/3 more compared to 2016.
Globus is part of the S7 Group, being a subsidiary of the airline giant Siberia, which took second place in the ranking of the best airlines. 2017 turned out to be favorable for the company - the number of passengers increased by 20.2%, amounting to 4.1 million people.
The Aeroflot subsidiary, which took over the baton from Dobroleta, which died as a result of UES sanctions, is positioned as a budget company. Although the first tickets for the new airline's flights were sold only two years ago, it confidently entered the top 10 airlines in Russia.
The number of passengers in 2017 amounted to 4.3 million people, an increase of 5% compared to 2016. Despite its youth, Pobeda’s flights have already become surrounded by scandals. Users are dissatisfied with the policy of keeping silent about the real price of a flight, demands to pay for the opportunity for families to sit together, flight delays and cases when more tickets are sold for a flight than the number of seats.
In fifth place in the ranking of Russian airlines in 2018 are Ural Airlines, which transported 7.5 million people in 2017, demonstrating an increase of 25%. In the meantime, the company is demanding that the Federal Air Transport Agency pay for the transportation of WWII veterans to celebrate the anniversary of the Victory in 2015. The Federal Air Transport Agency rejected the application for payment, citing the fact that it did not contain the words “including VAT” and other points of the same importance.
The owner of the world's largest operating helicopter fleet appears to have recovered from the crisis of late 2014. In 2017, the number of passengers transported by this company amounted to 6.8 million people, an increase of 9.1% compared to 2016.
The second subsidiary of giant Aeroflot, which made it into the top ten of the 2018 Russian airline rankings, carried more than 10.6 million people last year, posting an impressive 41.5% growth in passenger numbers - the highest of any ranked airline. At the same time, passenger turnover increased by 55.3%.
In second place in the ranking of the largest airlines in Russia is Siberia, also known as S7 Airlines, which carries out transportation to 83 destinations both in Russia and abroad. Most of the latter, however, are served by partner airlines. In total, 9.3 million passengers were transported in 2017.
Russians continue to fly on Aeroflot planes. In 2017, the company transported more than 30.5 million people, surpassing Siberia, which took second place in the rating, by more than 3 times. It is not surprising, since Aeroflot is the largest and oldest Russian airline, which has been transporting passengers since 1923. Although the company was included in the black sanctions list of Ukraine, this does not prevent the increase in the number of shipments.
According to such criteria as the number of passengers and passenger turnover, the company recorded an increase of 12% over the past year. By the way, Aeroflot can also be called one of the safest airlines in Russia in 2018- not a single major plane crash occurred on its lines, counting, of course, subsidiaries and accidents caused by the actions of third parties. In the airline safety rating published in 2017 by the auditing company JACDEC, Aeroflot is in 37th place.

Every day, millions of people fly around the world from one point of the world to another, so every passenger has the right to know the list of airlines that are distinguished by safe flights and good service. Every day, global consulting agencies rank the most popular, safe and unreliable airlines. When a rating of Russian airlines is created for flight reliability and safety, the determining factor is the incidents that occurred over the past year.
TOP 4 safest Russian airlines
More than 70 Russian airlines operate flights across Russia and from the country to other parts of the world every day. The rating of the safest airlines in Russia was topped by the four largest airlines, which can boast of a minimal number of accidents in their entire history.
The TOP 4 in terms of safety included:
- Ural Airlines - since the creation of the large holding, only three minor incidents have occurred. Experienced pilots quickly responded to problems and made emergency landings, thanks to which all emergency incidents were avoided without casualties;
- Aeroflot ranks second in the list of the safest airlines in Russia. Since the company was founded, only 4 accidents have occurred. The most notorious plane crash caused by a Russian pilot, which killed 75 passengers, occurred in 1994. Because of this, at one time the air carrier topped the rating of “The Most Dangerous Airlines in Russia.” After this, the company tightened control over flights;
- “S7” - during the existence of the airline, which was previously called “Sibir”, three plane crashes occurred. Despite the high level of reliability of the company and the small number of incidents, they are remembered for the large number of victims;
- UTAIR carries out not only passenger flights, but also cargo and helicopter flights. During all this time, Utair aircraft crashed 8 times, and the total number of victims was 80 people.
Interesting fact. Before TransAero airline went bankrupt, it was the one that topped the rating of the safest airlines in Russia. After the closure of the holding, Ural Airlines took the leading position.
The most popular Russian airlines
There are many private and state-owned airlines in Russia. Large companies are very popular among passengers; they receive the highest ratings for service, food, comfort, and punctuality. The largest airlines in Russia have a large fleet of aircraft of varying capacity and class, so flights are almost always carried out on time. Rating statistics of the most popular Russian airlines are compiled based on surveys conducted among passengers. The rating of the best airlines in Russia 2017 includes the 12 most popular aviation companies according to the international organizations IOSA and ICAO.
- The first place among the best airlines in terms of safety was taken by the I-Fly airline, which operates international charter flights together with the TEZ-TOUR travel agency.
