The church is located in the central part of coastal Burgas. The church may seem tiny, but it carries memories of yesteryear and gives visitors a sense of calm and serenity.
Sights of Burgas
Burgas is a port city on the Black Sea coast. This is one of the most attractive resort towns on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. There are several beaches within the city, and in its surroundings many mud clinics and balneological centers have been built on lakes.
In Roman times, on the site of modern Burgas was the town of Debellum, founded by Emperor Vespasian. The city was intended to resettle military veterans. A little later, hospitals were opened on these lands, rich in natural water sources. And in the Middle Ages, the Pyrgos fortress was built here, and only in the 16th century the city received its current name and borders.
You can get acquainted with the distant history of Burgas in the Archaeological Museum, the exhibition of which presents artifacts dating from the Stone Age to the Roman era: stone products, bronze axes, jewelry, ceramics, coins, dishes, models of ancient settlements.
Fragments of the Pyrgos fortress can be seen on the shores of Lake Mandrensko.
Other museum sights of Burgas- Natural History Museum with collections of flora, fauna and geological specimens. The Ethnographic Museum displays national costumes, household items, handicrafts, and ritual items. The collection of the Art Gallery presents sculptures and paintings by Bulgarian masters, as well as a collection of icons from the 15th century.
Such architectural sights of Burgas as the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the Armenian Church of the Holy Cross from the mid-19th century deserve attention.
The main city attraction of Burgas is the Seaside Park, stretching for more than 3.5 km along the sea. This is a great place for walking and relaxing - shady alleys, colorful flower beds, benches in secluded corners of the park, cafe terraces, sea views. Immediately below the park is Central Beach.
Natural attractions of Burgos- the pride of the resort. Within the city limits there are three lakes - Burgas, Atanasovskoe and Madrenskoe, each of which is an ornithological reserve. You can observe the inhabitants of these picturesque areas during a boat ride. On the shores of the lakes there are places for beach recreation, picnics and fishing. Nature lovers will also be impressed by a tour along the trails of the Poda Nature Reserve, which is home to about a hundred species of birds and turtles.

Burgas is a resort, seaside city; and, probably, few people would think of looking for some outstanding sights here. Why, when there is an excellent 100 m wide Central Beach right in the city? And a little further away begins the multi-kilometer Seaside Park, where in the summer a large-scale festival of sand sculptures and various entertainment events are held. The northern beaches of Burgas are also well worth visiting.
However, nature lovers should still break away from the sea for a while to see the Burgas lakes. There are three of them here, and all are very close to the city: Burgasskoe (Lake Vaya), Atanasovskoe and Mandrenskoe (Lake Mandra). These lakes are unique in that the continent’s largest migration route for migratory birds from Europe to Africa passes through them. The area between the lakes and the seashore has been declared the Poda National Nature Reserve, and in the right season, tens of thousands of birds can be seen here.
Burgas is quite nice for just walking around. The central pedestrian street, Aleksandrovskaya, is full of green spaces and cafes. There is also a much photographed city monument depicting a bronze holiday suitcase with sea shells pouring out of it.
Another interesting route for those who “stayed too long” in the city is a trip to the island of St. Anastasia, covered in romantic stories about pirates, treasures, underground passages and escaped communist political prisoners. Having visited the island, for example, during the day, in the late afternoon you can go to a fun celebration with wine and dancing in the traditional village of Bata.
In Burgas itself there are several museums, although all of them, from the Historical Museum to the Art Gallery, are dedicated exclusively to Bulgaria. The Regional Museum of Burgas consists of four subsections: historical, natural science, ethnographic and archaeological. Each museum occupies its own building, but they are all located close to each other, so it is convenient to explore them all in turn.
Burgas is quite nice for just walking around. The central pedestrian street, Aleksandrovskaya, is full of green spaces and cafes where you can take a break. There is also a much photographed city monument depicting a bronze holiday suitcase with sea shells pouring out of it. And in the same pedestrian zone you can stand at the “navel of the city” - the zero kilometer of Burgas.
In terms of special architectural beauties, Burgas can please, first of all, with two beautiful churches - however, the state in which they are now is not very pleasing. This is the Cyril and Methodius Cathedral and a small Armenian church. Both churches are over 100 years old.
Those interested in history may enjoy a visit to the Burgas Baths, which are also known as Aqua Kalide or Thermopolis. The current district of the city, on the territory of which there are Roman baths built before our era, is called Banevo. In 2011, the baths received the status of a national reserve, and archaeological research on their territory is still ongoing. And a little further, about 15 km from Burgas, there is another archaeological site: the ruins of the old Roman city of Deultuma. Deultum was founded at the beginning of our era and was the only free Roman settlement on the territory of present-day Bulgaria. The city was rich and prosperous, but by the 14th century, due to rising sea levels, it gradually turned into a swamp.
- Where to stay: in affordable Burgas, in Sunny Beach, comfortable for families with children, in the famous Nessebar or nearby Ravda, in family Chernomorets, in youth Primorsko, in the favorite resort of the Bulgarian bohemia - Sozopl, in cozy and romantic Obzor, in leisurely comfortable Elenite, in famous for its healing mud Pomorie, in the conveniently located healing St. Vlas, in the cosmopolitan Dunes, in the hospitable cheerful
What is Burgas for tourists? Burgas is the sea, beaches, airport, shops, port, park, and attractions. As they say, everything is in one bottle. But is it worth choosing Burgas as the main location for a holiday in Bulgaria? Reviews about this are very contradictory. We will figure out what is better - to come on an excursion, or to stay in a hotel for one or two weeks.
We vacationed just twenty kilometers from Burgas, in Pomorie (links to all the cities we saw are at the end of the article). And, naturally, they could not miss the opportunity to replenish their piggy bank with one of the largest resort cities in Bulgaria.
Part of the “tourist” Burgas:
Modern hotel:
In Burgas, founded in the 17th century, Bulgarians, Russians, Turks, Greeks and Armenians successfully lived together in different centuries (as in most Bulgarian cities). Therefore, here, just like in Nessebar and Sozopol, there is a certain mix of styles. True, in Burgas it is less pronounced due to the fact that there are more new “Soviet” buildings in this city. Tourism here is not the only (and not the main) source of income for local residents.
Burgas is quite modern, its streets are lined with large houses, there is not such an abundance of souvenir shops here, like in Nessebar. Ordinary cafes, usual shops, absence of barkers in front of restaurants, huge advertising banners - Burgas, although it stands on the seashore, cannot be called a resort town in the full sense of the word. You can come for a walk. You can come to do some shopping. You can also visit museums. But my firm opinion is that Burgas is, rather, for everyday life, and not for a beach holiday. To relax my soul and body, I would prefer a smaller city. The sea air is not as felt here as in other resorts in Bulgaria.
Sights of Burgas (as well as throughout Bulgaria) - ancient houses in the national style:
Where to start getting to know a new city? From determining the walking route. Therefore, the first place in any city where a self-respecting tourist should go is the information center. The information center in Burgas can be found on the Burgas Commune Square (coordinates N 42° 29.684′ E 27° 28.245′). In the center you will be given a free map of Burgas indicating the attractions and a lot of leaflets advertising events taking place in the city.
If you come to Burgas by car, then, in order to avoid wasting your nerves and time searching for street parking, we recommend leaving your car in the covered paid parking lot Tria str. Slivnitsa, 3. That’s exactly what we did.
Are we going for a walk?
Sights of Burgas in one day – choose where to go and what to see
What to see and where to walk in Burgas if you come here for one day?
Central square of Burgas(Troykata Square) with a monument to a Soviet soldier and a spray fountain. If you are lucky, you will see water spraying from under the tiles. We were unlucky. On the same square there is a supermarket and McDonald's - for those who need shops or fast food.
After taking a photo with the soldier in the background, go to Seaside Park of Burgas(Morska gradina). This park separates the city from the sea and is about 7 kilometers long. There are alleys, carousel rides, street theaters, and an observation bridge that goes 300 meters into the sea. What I really liked about the park was the presence of special bins for dog “traces”. The park is very clean, although in some ways it reminded me of the parks of Kislovodsk, only in a more “combed” form.
Archaeological excavations open to tourists are part of the attractions of Burgas:
Every year in July a sand sculpture festival is held in Burgas. It is impossible to miss it - the whole city is covered with advertisements with the date of the festival.
Walking the streets, it's worth walking to Armenian Church 1853 and the monument to the victims of the Armenian genocide (coordinates 42 * 29.606 - 27 * 28.438) and before Church of Cyril and Methodius– the largest temple in Burgas (42 * 29.773 - 27 * 28.426). Don't be lazy to go inside.
Residential street in the old town:
Pedestrian streets of Burgas– Aleksandrovsk and Aleko Bogoridi Boulevard. On the boulevard there is the Archaeological Museum, and on Aleksandrovskaya Street you will find kilometer zero - both are included in the list of the main attractions of Burgas.
For those who have already walked the streets and breathed in the sea air, and want to be intellectually enlightened, four museums await you in Burgas (they are located not far from each other):
Archaeological Museum– located in a building of the 19th century, demonstrates archaeological finds to tourists, some of which are dated “BC.” There are many exhibits from the times of the Roman Empire, various divine figurines, ceramics, coins and jewelry. Part of the exhibition is located outdoors. Address of the Burgas Archaeological Museum: Aleko Bogoridi Boulevard, 21.
Historical Museum– the largest museum in southeastern Bulgaria, recognized as a cultural heritage site. Inside is the history of Burgas and the surrounding area, the struggle for Orthodoxy and independence. Address of the historical museum: Slavyanska St, 69.
Ethnographical museum– located in the same building as the Historical one (Slavyanskaya, 69). The museum occupies two floors. The first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, while the second floor displays costumes from various ethnic groups. Master classes are held in the summer.
Natural Science Museum Burgas will appeal to nature lovers - you can see samples of stones, soil and insect collections, and take a walk through the botanical and zoological halls (there are 6 halls in total in the museum). Address of the natural science museum: st. Konstantina Fotinova, 30.
Decide for yourself whether to spend time on museums. We didn't spend. We may have missed something important.
A couple of natural and historical attractions of Burgas and the surrounding area
Atanasovskoye Lake. Located in the northeast, near Burgas airport. Lake Atanasovskoe is a natural reserve with rare birds. And here you can take mud baths, which are extremely beneficial for health (if you do these procedures after consulting a doctor). At the beginning of the 20th century, a saltworks was created here, and the tanks for evaporating salt have survived to this day, although salt is no longer produced here on an industrial scale. Atanasovskoe Lake is located in the north-east of Burgas (in the direction of Varna) and Dimitra Dimova Street leads to it.
There are practically no ancient fortresses and castles in Bulgaria, but there are plenty of ancient ruins. For example, the ruins of the Rusokastro fortress 30 kilometers from Burgas. A long time ago, the Bulgarians defeated the Ottoman conquerors here. The remains of the fortress are located between the villages of Rusokastro and Zhelyazovo. Inspections are possible all year round and are absolutely free. But you can only get here by car, passing a number of real Bulgarian villages.
There are also ruins from the time of Philip the Great in Burgas. This is the ancient settlement of Aqua Kalide (translated from Latin as “hot water”) - a tourist complex with ruins and mineral springs. Mineral springs flow here. Some lucky people even managed to chat with archaeologists. You can get to Akwe Calide by car along the E773 road towards Aytos, or by bus No. 30 (from the city center to the complex is about 15 kilometers.
17 kilometers from Burgas, in the village of Debelt, there is another attraction - a ruin. These are the ruins of ancient Deultum - the ruins of a settlement from the times of the Roman Empire.
If ruins don’t appeal to you (or you’re already fed up with them), but your vacation mood doesn’t allow you to lie on the beach or go shopping, then you can go to a peacock farm. They even take excursions here. The farm is located 15 minutes drive from Burgas towards Varna.
Island of St. Anastasia. Controversial place. We didn’t go, but our friends did. And they said that there was nothing special to see - the island was small, there was a church, a hotel and a restaurant on it. You can only get there by boat as part of an excursion. As I read in one of the TOPs, “people come here to breathe the sea air.” But something tells me that sea air is not difficult to find in any seaside town in Bulgaria without paying for an excursion.
If on vacation in Bulgaria you feel like you have no hands without a fishing rod, then, judging by the reviews of fishing enthusiasts, you should go to Lake Burgas on the outskirts of the city.
As you can see, there are more attractions in Burgas than in other coastal cities. You can wander through museums, go to lakes, and crawl through ruins. It will take from one to three to four days to study them. Burgas is a lively, clean and interesting city. But whether you want to relax in this city is up to you to decide. I repeat, I would look for another city in Bulgaria for a vacation, and come to Burgas on excursions.— 34 km
If you are only interested in a holiday in Bulgaria, and there is no opportunity (or desire) to travel to this country by car, you can do as we do. We bought a ready-made tour (hotel + flight + transfer), and rented a car on the spot and drove around Bulgaria for our own pleasure. It turned out quite inexpensive. You can compare prices from different tour operators here:
But you can try and organize your own vacation:

The sunny country of Bulgaria hospitably welcomes more and more tourists every year. Many of them are wondering what to see in Bulgaria in the summer, because young and active people want to spend their free time usefully and get as many pleasant emotions as possible.
Nessebar is an ancient Bulgarian city with a large number of attractions. The main attractions of Nessebar and its surroundings are located in the old part of the city, which is considered one of the most important historical monuments in the whole world.
The oldest building on the peninsula is the Church of St. Stephen, which was probably built in the 11th century. The church is entirely built of stone. It is interesting that the building has never been restored and has retained its original appearance. Inside the building are countless ancient artifacts.

Connoisseurs of Bulgarian culture should definitely visit the Ethnographic Museum. In the museum you can see:

Excursion holidays on Golden Sands
“Golden Sands” is a very popular resort that has an unusual history. It is believed that the resort got its name due to the fact that once upon a time pirates landed here in order to hide gold, and over time the gold turned into sand. Tourists fell in love with this resort for its clean sand and warm, clear sea. The authorities monitor the state of the environment very carefully; the seabed and beaches are regularly cleaned of dirt and debris.
Some travelers who have not yet visited the resort want to know what interesting sights to see in Golden Sands in addition to beach activities. First of all, we recommend organizing excursions with the whole family to Veliko Tarnovo, a city that was once the capital of Bulgaria. The distance to the city is 250 kilometers.
Veliko Tarnovo
Tourists come here to get acquainted with the beautiful views that open from the observation platforms, as well as to see with their own eyes the beautiful Tsarevets fortress. In the center of the fortress there is a Palace complex with a Throne Hall.

Sights of Sunny Beach
Sunny Beach is one of the largest. Here you can have a great rest on one of the wide beaches. Most resort guests want to have an idea of what to see in the area around Sunny Beach. Local residents recommend visiting the city-museum of Sozopol. The city is an open-air museum, a former Greek colony.
In Sozopol you can see ancient houses that were built exclusively from stone and wood. The city houses a museum of ancient Greek art. If a traveler does not know where to go on an excursion in Bulgaria, we recommend that you first visit the Ropotamo Nature Reserve. The beautiful reserve is located along the Ropotamo River. Here you can observe the vital activity of animals:
- roe deer;
- deer;
- wild boars;
- bears;
- turtles;
- snake.
The Kamchia reserve is a paradise of virgin nature, which was created to preserve the forest. Here you can see about 40 species of birds, as well as a large number of varieties of fish.

What to visit in Burgas and its surroundings?
Burgas is one of the most modern cities in sunny Bulgaria, which is located on the Black Sea coast. When tourists get bored with swimming in the sea and peaceful sleep under the sun's rays, they try to find out which attractions of Burgas are a must-see.
In the city center you can see a large number of ancient temples, fountains and other buildings. One of the most famous religious buildings is the Temple of Cyril and Methodius. The beautiful green building is famous for its unique frescoes and carved altar.

And so why exactly Bulgaria...
1. Bulgaria Although it is part of the European Union, you can apply for a Bulgarian visa there, not a Schengen one. Bulgarian visa much cheaper and you don’t need to go to get your fingerprints.
With a multiple-entry Bulgarian visa, you can also visit neighboring countries, for example, Turkey, Romania, Macedonia.
2. If you choose as your location Golden sand and then be prepared for a noisy endless party. In Golden Sands, somehow there is a significant difference in the sea throughout the entire 10 km of the village. The most beautiful sea, a stunning turquoise hue at the very beginning of Golden Sands. The color of the sea there is incredibly similar to the Caribbean Sea.

3. If you want to not just lie on the beach, but see the country, then the first place you should go is the city Veliko Tarnovo. You can get there by buses with transfers from any region of Bulgaria, but it will take a lot of time. The most convenient way is by car. There are also excursions there. Veliko Tarnovo is a wonderful ancient city located in a very hilly and mountainous area. From the cafes and observation decks there is a wonderful view of the city, which was once the capital of Bulgaria. The first mention of Tarnovo in historical monuments dates back to the 9th century; in 1186-1393 here was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, the place of coronation of the Bulgarian kings and the residence of the archbishop, from 1235 - the Bulgarian patriarchs. 6.5 km north of Tarnovo is the Transfiguration Monastery. The active monastery is located under steep cliffs.

4. In Veliko Tarnovo, you must visit the ancient Tsarevets fortress. Entrance to the fortress is paid. It is located on the hill of the same name, right in the city center. This hill is not easy. Archaeological excavations have discovered the remains of ancient people who lived here in the second millennium BC.
The fortress itself was built in the 12th century, and served as the main fortification for the royal power and patriarchy from 1185 to 1393.
The fortress wall has been preserved very well. The Patriarch's Palace is perhaps the most luxurious building of the entire fortress. It can be seen from anywhere in the city; it forms the silhouette of the fortress.

5. The next interesting place in Bulgaria is the Castle in the village of Ravadinovo "In Love with the Wind". The castle, although a new building, is very impressive. You can spend a pleasant afternoon there. The main advice here is not to make a mistake with the time of your visit. The ideal time is early morning (there are almost no tourists yet) and sunset (this is especially for photographers). There is an entrance fee to the castle.

6. Another pleasant day in Bulgaria can be spent in one of the oldest Bulgarian villages - Arbanasi. Not far from the city of Veliko Tarnovo. A small Bulgarian village with a rich history and many churches, monasteries and attractions. One of the monasteries in the village of Arbanasi is the monastery of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, which belongs to the Veliko Tarnovo Metropolis of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

7. The next must-see place is Cape Kaliakra. Cape Kaliakra is located 12 km from Kavarna. It protrudes into the sea for 2 km.
At the entrance to the cape you can see an obelisk in honor of 40 Bulgarian girls who, according to legend, tied their braids and threw themselves from the cape into the sea, just so as not to be captured by the Ottomans. On the territory of the cape we see the ruins of an ancient fortress, the remains of Roman baths, etc. To this day, household items from the times of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome are found here. In one of the caves there is a small museum where you can see these artifacts with your own eyes.
On the way to the cape you can enjoy endless fields of bright yellow sunflowers. The most beautiful photos from Bulgaria can be taken here.

8. Another wonderful Bulgarian town - Varna- the sea capital of Bulgaria. Varna is a famous Black Sea resort in north-eastern Bulgaria, the recognized tourist capital of the country. This is a historically developed resort area with rich natural resources, one of the most important and largest on the Black Sea and in Eastern Europe. In addition, Varna is a city with a very rich cultural life, claiming the title of European Capital of Culture 2019. Prices in Varna are much cheaper than in other parts of the country.

Lots of greenery.
9. Sozopol. The charm of this city cannot be expressed in words. This is one of the oldest cities in Europe. I really wanted to feel surrounded by ancient architecture. Sozopol is located 35 km south of Burgas on a small picturesque peninsula. The ancient part of the city is an architectural reserve. It is often called "Harmanit" because of the many mills - "harmans" - that were located here in ancient times. You can go in any direction - the city is beautiful everywhere. Sozopol seems to be created for romantics and connoisseurs of antiquity. It is impossible to get lost in this city, it is tiny - there are only 4 thousand inhabitants and almost everyone speaks Russian. Young people easily switch to German and English. The city is built up with buildings no higher than three or four floors. Sozopol is divided into two parts: the Old and New Town, with a park and a beach between them. Family hotels and hotels are concentrated in the New Town. You can also live in the Old Town. But very noisy in the evening. It's good to walk and relax there. I advise you to see the Old Town not in the evening, when there are a lot of cafes and shops open there and tourists roam in crowds, but early in the morning. You will see a completely different Sozopol, a real quiet, ancient city. Sozopol is an excellent option for accommodation if you are going on vacation with children.
12
Nothing will escape your gaze.
10. Ovech Fortress is located in Bulgaria east of Provadiya, 53 kilometers west of Varna and 410 kilometers east of Sofia. The Ovech fortress is located in Bulgaria east of Provadiya, 53 kilometers west of Varna and 410 kilometers east of Sofia. Historical sources present this place under various names. The oldest name is the Byzantine Provat, the Bulgarian name is Ovech, and the Turkish name is Tash-Hisar, which means “stone fortress”.
Archaeological studies have shown that this fortification was successively used by the Byzantines, Thracians, Bulgarians, Romans and Turks in the third - early 7th centuries, and later in the period from the 10th - 11th to the end of the 17th century. Events related to the reign of Tsar Ivaylo in 1277-1280, the campaign of Count Amadeus VI of Savoy in 1366, as well as the campaign of the Polish-Hungarian king Vladislav III Jagiellon (Varnenchik) in 1444 took place here. Try to arrive at the fortress late in the evening. From the fortress you can enjoy the stunning Bulgarian sunset. Entrance to the fortress is paid. But we arrived in the evening and there was no security anymore, so we got in for free.
24
The fortress is open all year round.
11. Stone forest(broken stones) is a unique natural phenomenon, which has no analogue in the world. Located 20 km from Varna towards Sofia. The tourist center is the central group, 800 m long. Other groups are scattered over an area of 50 square meters. km. Geologists from all over the world visited the stone forest and tried to unravel its mystery. Officially, there are 15 hypotheses. The most popular version is that there was a sea in these parts 50 million years ago. Geologists called it the Lute Sea. Over time, three layers formed at the bottom of the sea. The lowest layer consisted of a gray-yellow marl base, on which a thick layer of quartz sand formed, the uppermost layer consisted of limestone. Over time, the water left these places. Under the influence of atmospheric conditions, the upper layer began to collapse. The lime-rich rainwater from the upper layer began to penetrate into the lower layers of quartz sand. Thus, the layers began to be firmly welded together and form large stone pillars from top to bottom, similar to the growths of stalactites that are found in caves.
An interesting fact is that many columns are hollow - that is, empty from the inside. So, according to another version, plants similar to tropical mango trees grew here. Stone pillars formed around the plants, and the plants rotted and over time, wastelands formed in the pillars. Entrance to the reserve is paid.

12. Nessebar- the pearl of Bulgaria: a masterpiece of architecture that has survived to this day. The city is located on a rocky peninsula 850 m long and 300 wide, 37 km north of Burgas.
Nessebar is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It has been proven that its history dates back at least three millennia: every year archaeologists discover new traces of ancient cultures and civilizations that lived on the peninsula. Nessebar is included in the list of world cultural heritage: in 1956 it was declared a museum city, and since 1983 Nessebar has been under the auspices of UNESCO.
Old Nessebar is an example of a miracle. Several centuries ago it went under water, and only a piece of land 850 by 300 meters remained in place, where all 40 city churches were collected. “Underwater Nessebar” is clearly visible from a boat in good weather.
