Where is the best place to stay in Ischia? What is the best hotel to stay in Ischia? Thermal waters of Ischia
to his beloved commander Cornelius Cossus. Today this island is open to everyone. For two and a half thousand years, Ischia has had the glory of the island of eternal youth and beauty.
How to get to the island of Ischia?
The emerald island of Ischia is the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea, bewitching with golden sand of incredible softness, beckoning with its warm thermal waters, and attracting with numerous historical attractions. Anyone who has been here at least once comes to the island again and again, because Ischia has an amazing ability to win the hearts of even seasoned tourists.
You can get to the island in different ways, depending on how you decide to spend your holiday in Italy: whether you are going specifically to Ischia or first want to wander around Rome or Naples. Based on this, choose where you need tickets. To get to Ischia, as you already understood, you need to land on the mainland - in Rome or Naples.
By plane
If you do not want to visit Rome, then you can get to the island faster from Naples - there is a boat from there to Ischia. However, it may be possible to find better air tickets to Rome Fiumicino Airport. In any case, decide on the dates and go to the website Aviasales.ru, where the system will automatically show you the most profitable options for the dates you are interested in.
The most convenient way to get to Ischia from the airport is to book an airport transfer. This solution can be very beneficial for a group of tourists of 3-4 people. To get around the island, you can order a taxi with a Russian-speaking driver. You can select and order a transfer through the convenient Kiwitaxi service: you just need to choose where and where you need to get to. At the specified time, in the specified place, your personal driver will be waiting for you with a sign with your name.
Order a transfer.
By bus
If you land in Naples:
Having arrived by plane at Naples Capodichino airport, you should take the Alibus or 3S bus to Beverello (from where ferries go to Ischia).
If you land in Rome:
From Fiumicino airport you need to get to the train station "Stazione Termini" (how to do this, consult the article on the Eternal City). From there, take a ticket to Naples.
By train
The most convenient and fastest way to get to Naples, if you land in Rome, is to take the high-speed train Frecciarossa Rome - Naples (journey takes 2 hours, ticket price is about 50 euros).
The main railway stations of Naples are: Central Station Piazza Garibaldi Napoli Mergellina Station. Having arrived at the Central Station, we recommend that you go to the historical center of the city, which is located 2 km from the station. You can get there by bus or tram. If Naples does not interest you, you can go straight to the port - buses go there every 10 minutes.
You can also get off at Mergellina station, which is about 300 meters from the ferry crossing.
If you want to travel by boat to get to the island, you should go to Molo Beverello, if you choose a ferry, you need to head to the waterfront of the Calata porta Massa port.
By ferry (boat)
By car
For those who have rented a car (we remind you that this is easy and simple to do using the Rentalcars service) and are traveling by car: You need to get to the port of Pozzuoli, where cars are loaded onto the ferry. Take the motorway (A1), then head towards Naples and continue to the Pozzuoli exit at the Via Campana junction.
Follow the signs for the port of Pozzuoli or (recommended) continue on the motorway until the exit "Scali Marittimi", "Napoli porto".
You can leave your car in the car park at the Beverello port of Naples.
For more information on how to get to the port of Naples by car, see www.ischiamap.it.

Geographical location
The volcanic island of Ischia is located in the northern part of the Gulf of Naples. The area of this piece of paradise is approximately 46 square meters. km. The closest way to get there is from Naples: the ferry ride takes about an hour.
The main city of the island bears the same name - Ischia. It in turn is divided into two parts: Ischia Ponte and Ischia Porte. However, Forio is considered the largest city, which retains traces of Saracen raids in its architecture. The smallest settlement in terms of area is Lacco Ameno. It is popular among tourists for its mushroom-shaped reef near the seashore.
Volcanoes
The island of Ischia has volcanoes: Monte Vezzi (395 m), Trabotti (512 m) and Epomeo (788 m). The last time they woke up was in the 14th century. Now only water vapor and hot thermal springs remind of their past vigorous activity. It is thanks to the latter that a warm holiday is possible at any time of the year. It is not surprising that the inhabitants of this ancient island have learned to create their own cosmetics and medicines that help cure diseases of the back, upper respiratory tract, neurology and skin diseases.
Story
The period of the Roman Empire is the era of development and prosperity of the island. The trading city of Aenaria arose here. Today, at the site of its foundation, it was possible to find valuable items: bowls and dishes from Tunisia and Algeria. Constant raids in the Middle Ages forced the city residents to build observation towers throughout the island. Before Ischia became part of a united Italy, it was in the possession of Napoleon's family. It is known that Giuseppe Garibaldi came here to the island to improve his health with the help of thermal waters.
Transport
If you want to spend time actively, then experts recommend staying in hotels in the bay: Casamicciola or Ischia Porto. The fact is that from here it is ideal to get to Naples, or. Regular boats ply here constantly. There used to be a donkey trail on the island of Ischia, which is now paved and is approximately 36 km of good road surface. However, it is quite narrow, so you won’t be able to ride it with the breeze.

Archaeological Museum of Pithecusae
It will attract the attention of those who are interested in the life of the people who inhabited the island many centuries ago. There are objects made of bronze, terracotta, and painted vessels.

Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese)
The Aragonese castle is rightfully considered the main attraction of Ischia, which is picturesquely located on a rocky island off the coast. Initially, the castle grew up in ancient times, but in the Middle Ages the decision to rebuild it was pleasant. Since then, the Aragonese castle has been connected to the island by a dam. It is impossible not to note the simply enormous size of the building on this small island: the total area is 543 square meters. m, height - 115 m.
Previously, there were 13 churches on the castle grounds, but they were destroyed by the British in the 19th century. Despite its difficult history, the castle makes only a positive impression. Entrance to the fortress is approximately 11 euros.
The main attraction of the island is the Aragonese Castle.
Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady (Cattedrale dell`Assunta)
The Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady was also heavily destroyed by the British. However, it still contains parts of the beautiful chapel, which was decorated with frescoes of saints.
Luchino Visconti Museum in the summer residence of the Villa La Colombaia (Museo-Fondazione La Colombaia di Luchino Visconti)
This one is dedicated to the work of the famous director, so stage costumes for films and photographs are widely represented here.
La Mortella Gardens
These are two divine hectares on which 3 thousand species of all kinds of plants grow! The gardens were founded by the wife of composer William Walthan. The name comes from the word mortella (Neapolitan for “divine myrtle”). The garden is located at the foot of Monte Zaro. Visiting period: April to November.

Gardens of Ravino (Giardini Ravino)
Ravino Gardens is another place for a pleasant pastime. Exotic plants simply amaze tourists. Be careful: there are live cactus sculptures here.
Thermal waters of Ischia
As already mentioned, thermal waters, like the network of thermal services itself, appeared due to the volcanic origin of the island. Even the ancient Romans knew a lot about the healing effect of water. However, their active development dates back to the 16th century, when the study of thermal springs was carried out by the Calabrian physician Giulio Iazolino.
The water is naturally drinkable. There are also springs here that flow directly into the sea and, accordingly, are open to everyone. It is known that the largest number of springs is concentrated on the island, and their composition is super rich: mineral salts, phosphates, sulfates, biocarbonate, bromine, iron and aluminum. Needless to say, water is indispensable in the treatment of skin diseases, neuroses, arthritis, rheumatism, infertility, and metabolic disorders. For many centuries, the Nitrodi spring in the commune of Barano has been famous for its miraculous effect.
There are also saunas ala Roman baths. They are located in natural grottoes and contribute to the overall cleansing of the body. It is worth remembering the limitation: no more than three times a day for 7-8 minutes.
However, you should also remember about contraindications: thermal baths cannot be taken by people who have diseases of the cardiovascular system.
There are thermal parks on the island that will help visitors to Ischia make the most of their time and make the most of it. The parks have swimming pools with different water temperatures. Experts recommend starting with cooler pools and gradually increasing the temperature. It is also recommended to swim in sea water after visiting the pool.

"Gardens of Poseidon" (Giardini Poseidon Terme)
The largest thermal complex is considered to be the “Gardens of Poseidon” in Chitara Bay, which, by the way, is protected. There are 18 swimming pools available to visitors. You can imagine the level of service and the diversity of services, since they even offer to use the pool for a foot massage.
Cities of Ischia
Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte
Ischia is considered the main city of the island, which, as we already wrote, is divided into two towns: Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte. Ischia Porto is the business as well as cultural heart of the island. The main attraction is the port, which began operating in 1853. There are houses and cozy restaurants around it. From here boats leave for Capri, Naples, Procida, Amalfi and Procida. The main street of the city is Via Roma Corso Vittoria Colonna, which is lined with fashionable shops, gourmet cafes and restaurants. Along the coast of the city there are beaches that are completely free. Ischia Porto smoothly passes into another glorious town - Ischia Ponte. The main attraction of this place is the Aragonese Castle. The word “ponte” that this place received is quite understandable: it was the bridge that connected the castle with the island.
Forio
Another ancient city on the western coast of the island. It has a rich history: back in the 7th century BC. The Greeks settled here. They built the temple of Venus of Chitarskaya. Forio continues to preserve traces of the East (Turkish domination), the Saracens and the fierce pirate Ariardeno Barbarossa. It was to protect against the latter that the city residents installed the Torrione fortress tower (XV century) and several other observation towers. Today tourists come there to see the temple of the Madonna Intercessor, created in the 16th century. Celebrities like artists, directors and writers like to relax in the city.
Lacco Ameno
This resort town was a Greek colony in ancient times. In addition to clean water, tourists here note the beauty of pine and citrus groves. Lacco Ameno was famous for its pottery masters, but this art has not yet been forgotten. Excavations marked the beginning of the opening of the Archaeological Museum. A huge mushroom - a bizarre rock - is considered a curiosity for tourists and a subject of admiration. One of the island's beautiful thermal parks is also located here: Negombo Gardens. The Poseidon Gardens are a 15-20 minute drive away.

Casamicciola Terme
Casamicciola Terme is no different from other cities on the island: there are healing springs, developed infrastructure, and, naturally, a stunning view. It is located near Ischia Porto and has its own port. In the 18th century, the Neapolitans built the thermal center of Pio Monte della Misericordia here. During the earthquake of 1883, the city was very badly damaged, so most of the buildings had to be rebuilt.
Island kitchen
It is not surprising that it is related to Neapolitan. However, there are some peculiarities here that cannot be ignored. One of the popular dishes is considered to be the fragrant rabbit in Iskitan style (coniglio all "ischitana). Many island families traditionally cook it on Sunday. This special breed of “eared” is bred on the island in its natural environment.
Mmm... Wonderful rabbit. Photo cuboimages.it
Well, what island can do without fish? Squid, sea urchin, mussels, king mackerel, octopus, and tuna are excellently prepared here.
As for desserts, you should try rum baba, to which Iskitan lemon liqueur is added. The Iskitans are simply proud of this sweetness. They are sure that, despite the large number of recipes for rum baba, they can truly cook it only in Italy on this small, proud island.
You can also have a snack with taralli - local cookies.
Local wine is also famous outside the island. It differs from all others with its extraordinary aroma, which is created through the use of spices: rosemary, dill and marjoram. We recommend Frassitelli, Ambra and Epomeo. Naturally, you should grab a bottle of Limoncello liqueur as a gift.
on the island
June 29 you can witness a solemn procession thanking the sea for its gifts.
Feast of St. Anne
It is celebrated annually on July 26th. For many centuries, sea grouse sailed to the island on boats along with their wives and children. Everyone gathered at the Church of St. Anne in Cartaromana Bay. It is believed that Saint Anne is the patron of pregnant women. Today, on this day, the island's residents organize competitions, picnics and a parade of boats pre-decorated with flowers.
August, 26th On the day of St. Alexander, the Iskitans traditionally organize a procession in typical costumes.
Let us conclude that there is hardly a single tourist who would not like this island, which has managed to preserve a large number of attractions and traditions. It cannot be called the “Green Island”: the landscapes will not leave you indifferent, and the thermal waters will help restore health and beauty.
Despite its relatively small size, Ischia has a fairly large selection of hotels and various types of real estate options, which are intended for living and a comfortable stay on the island during your vacation. Moreover, these are not only objects for recreation, but also for spa treatment, since Ischia has long been known for its thermal springs with radon and sodium chloride mineral waters, as well as sulfide silt mud. Therefore, in addition to the sea, it is also a balneological resort. Ischia owes these features to its volcanic origin, signs of which still make themselves felt in the periodic release of steam from its depths, and sometimes by earthquakes. For this reason, the interest of tourists in the island is even greater.
I want to offer several options for a place to stay in Ischia, which, in my opinion, you might like and be interested in.
I will be the first to name a beautiful and luxurious five star hotel San Montano Resort & SPA. It is located not far from the bay and the beach of the same name, in principle, like the hotel itself - San Montano. I will describe some of its features and services provided so that you have a general idea about it.
Guests can choose from about a dozen room options, varying in their configuration and comfort. These range from single rooms to two-level four-bed luxury rooms.
I will not describe all the options, since it may take some time and seem tedious, I will only say that they are decorated in a classic marine style, there is a TV, a separate bathroom with all toiletries, and some rooms are equipped not only with balconies, but also terraces overlooking the sea or the island itself.
Ischia is only seven kilometers away from mainland Italy, and the city of Naples is about forty kilometers away. I said this because from the hotel restaurant, which offers a large selection of local delicacies, national Italian dishes and Neapolitan desserts, there is a beautiful view of the Sorento Peninsula, the city of Naples itself and the majestic volcano Vesuvius.
I’ll say right away, so as not to repeat myself later, that breakfast and any ordered dishes, if desired, can be delivered directly to your room. In addition to the restaurant, there is a bar and snack bar on site, where you can taste a variety of local and imported drinks, excellent Italian ice cream and light snacks.
There are two outdoor pools and an onsen on site, as well as an indoor Kneipp pool (for those unfamiliar with what that is, let me explain, it is a knee-deep pool with alternating hot and cold water, which is recommended for people sufferers from varicose veins) and five hydromassage baths, while in which you can admire the Bay of San Montano. The wellness center also features a variety of showers and steam baths, including a Turkish bath. You can take advantage of the provided beauty treatments, hydrotherapy, mud baths or massages. There is also a solarium. As you can see, here you can not only have a good rest, but also improve your health a little.
For sports, there is a gym with modern equipment and the help of a professional and qualified instructor, and a fitness center.
Among the services provided, we can note free delivery to the San Montano beach, where sun loungers, umbrellas and towels await you, also completely free.
This is a beautiful beach, located in the bay of the same name, so the sea is quite calm almost all the time, and the shallow entry into the water is perfect for relaxing and swimming with children. As for children, I will immediately note the fact that hotel accommodation for all children under two years of age is provided free of charge. In addition, the hotel provides child care services and, if necessary, a nanny.
Another free transfer will take you to the village of Lacco Ameno, which has many of its own attractions that will be interesting to visit. Speaking of transfers, I would like to mention the free ferry transfer upon arrival at the hotel and upon departure from it.
If you want to get to know the island and its interesting places in more detail, you can contact the hotel receptionist and book a tour around the island or along the coast, I assure you that there will be something to see.
There is a beauty salon and hairdresser on the calving grounds, which will allow you to always look perfect. Dry cleaning and laundry services are available. Those wishing to personally explore the sights and beauty of the island can rent a car.
Internet on site is free of charge, and there is also a photocopier and fax. For meetings, conferences or special events, there are conference and banquet rooms.
San Montano Resort & SPA is open all year round, so there is heating in the rooms and the hotel itself.
Here is an approximate picture of this hotel, and I almost forgot, the staff here speaks several languages, including Russian, so you will not have any difficulties with communication.
I would like to say a few words about another good hotel, which is called L'Albergo Della Regina Isabella.
It is located right on the site of ancient ruins, from the Greco-Roman era, on the very coast of Lacco Ameno. There is also a wellness center and three swimming pools. In the middle of the last century, this hotel was opened by director Angelo Rizzoli. This is a very respectable "five", with rooms furnished in a Mediterranean style, and some even have antique furniture.
The hotel's award-winning Michelin-starred restaurant, Indaco, serves gourmet international cuisine and there is always live music in the bar.
I will not talk about the services and procedures of the spa, since they are similar to the description of the previous hotel, I will only say about what the above-described does not have.
There is a rich sports program, as there is a tennis court, table tennis, diving and some water sports equipment.
There is also a honeymoon suite. Otherwise, the services provided are similar to those available from San Montano Resort & SPA.
The hotel staff, as in the previous case, speaks Russian.
Here are a couple of options out of more than two and a half hundred that are available on the island of Ischia, but the choice, of course, can only be yours, since these are not the best, but some of them. I think they interested you.
We are going to the island of Ischia in mid-June. Tell me please:
1) What is the best place to stay to make it convenient to go on excursions to Capri, to the Amalfi Coast, to have the opportunity to take thermal treatments and have a good time in the evening? I wouldn't want to sit in a hotel every evening.
2) Is it worth staying for one week on the Amalfi Coast?
If so, where, so that, first of all, it is picturesque) and for one week in Ischia? Or is it better to take two weeks in Ischia and go on excursions from there? What would be more cost effective? 3) How can you spend less time on the road to attractions (Capri, Vesuvius, Sorrento, Naples)?
4) Does it make sense to go to Ischia for a week?
5) What is the weather like in Ischia at this time? What temperature? Do they swim in the sea?
Stepanida, I can only answer you regarding the island of Ischia itself (I have not been to the Amalfi Coast):
We took thermal treatments in 2 parks, the most popular in Ischia: Poseidon Gardens and Negombo. The first is located near Forio, the second in the town of Lacco Ameno (5 minutes by bus from Casamicciola + 10 minutes on foot). We lived in Casamicciola, the journey to the Poseidon Gardens took 20 minutes. by bus; to Ischia Porto, from where they take all excursions and where the main entertainment venues are - 7 min. , also by bus. In our town there was also a port, from where you can go to Capri and Naples on your own.
In general, the road around the island by bus is 33 km, so it doesn’t really matter where you stop, because... all distances are relatively short. The main hotels are located in Ischia Porto (this is the main town on the island, the noisiest, the main port, but also most of the restaurants, clubs and shops there), in Forio (near the Poseidon Gardens), in Casamicciola (we really liked it there, and before everything close), in San Angelo (this is such a beautiful place, there on a sightseeing tour of the island they allow you to walk for an hour to enjoy it)). And in a hotel in the evening, in my opinion, it’s a sin to sit in Ischia, and the distances where you stay are not the same, so that they keep you from walking around different towns on the island.))
We were on a week-long tour in Ischia, we didn’t have time to visit Capri, but we wanted to. I don’t know, 10-12 days would be ideal for me, I just don’t really like more than that in any place, I want to go home)).
About the weather, I’ll say that in early May it was warm, +20-25 degrees, the sea was cool (but we swam)). I think that in mid-June everything will be ok, and it won’t be too hot.
If you have any questions, please))
Nadezhda, thanks for the detailed answer. :) If it's not a secret, why didn't you manage to go to Capri? Did your procedure schedule get in the way? I am also in doubt: to go for a week or two. One week, it seems, is not enough to go to Capri, get an idea of the Amalfi Coast and improve your health at the thermal springs. And two weeks seems to be too much. (I heard that Naples, Pompeii and Vesuvius do not make much of an impression.) It’s a pity that all programs are multiples of 7 days. As I understand it, the reason is the charter schedule. I was interested in other flights to Naples: if you fly through Munich, you will have to spend 6.5 hours in the air + connections. Also not the best option... I would like to know your opinion on this matter. Does it make sense to fly via Rome and take Eurostar to Naples? This option allows you to stay in Ischia for 10-12 days.
Nadezhda, please also tell me where you would stay now? I would be grateful if you recommend any hotel. :) Maybe you noticed something? :)) I would like the territory to be a park, to have a good panoramic view from the territory, to have a thermal center in the hotel or nearby (set to the “anti-stress” or “beauty” programs), so that the hotel has a zest.
Which thermal park did you like best? Does it make sense to visit everything or is it better to stop at one thing?
In general, I will try to answer in order))
We didn't go to Capri because... There wasn’t enough time to climb around the island of Ischia itself, and I didn’t want to interfere with a bunch of impressions. We were in Naples, and Vesuvius, and Pompeii. I didn’t like Naples, it’s kind of dirty, noisy, a port city, in general. It has its own flavor, but not for me)). Vesuvius made an impression, we were at the very top and looked into the crater (the walk to the top takes about 30 minutes, 270 meters). Here in Pompeii, under the hot sun, we were tired of walking in a group for 2 hours. But still, we’ve been and seen!
If you set a goal to visit thermal springs and procedures, then doctors advise at least 2 weeks - this is the minimum course. For us, the thermal baths were a pleasant addition and an opportunity to swim even in a cold sea, and if we were going to improve our health, then it would be for 14 days, no less.
About the road. When we took the tour, the dates were a little inconvenient - we were leaving on Saturday, and we thought of flying to Rome (and staying there for a day), and then on a high-speed train (apparently this is Eurostar? I just don’t know)) 1 hour 40 minutes . to Naples, but Aeroflot told us an unacceptable price for tickets, and we flew Eurofly to Naples on Saturday, what can we do)). Via Rome, I think, is not tiring, it’s just a matter of price.
The hotel is very popular among Russians - "Triton" in Forio, our friends stayed there, and we stopped by. Pleasant, a big advantage - right on the shore, and its own thermal center is not bad, the territory is quite large, green. Our hotel Gran Paradiso (Sea View rooms) had a panoramic view, simply excellent, we had fun on the balcony!! But a very small pool, and a thermal center)). Oh, here's another one. I just don’t remember the name of the hotel, but it is located right above Negombo Park, they even have beaches at the same time, and the entrance is nearby. It is located right on the top of the mountain, a large park, very beautiful from the outside. I think the tour operator will advise you better about it)).
Of the thermal parks, I liked the Poseidon Gardens more - it is more peaceful, there are many swimming pools, there is a thermal sauna right in the rock, it is very beautiful. But our friends liked Negombo more - it is greener there, and the bay is very picturesque. In short, to each his own. And I would only go to Poseidon, but we climbed to Negombo out of curiosity.
It seems like I didn’t miss anything?))) Cheers, as they say))
Nadezhda, thank you very much! :) You are a godsend for me! :)
I read about Triton that it is popular among the Germans. What about the view? Are there any restaurants nearby?
There are still questions about nutrition. What type of food is better to take: breakfasts or half board? I looked at some local hotel websites and noticed that in some places you can get either lunch or dinner as half board. What's the best way to book? Is taking a siesta during the day at local establishments annoying?
Nadezhda, perhaps you were wondering how thermal water differs in composition in hotels? Is this difference fundamental? The agencies, unfortunately, cannot answer which hotels specialize in what.
The agency recommends Forio. Will it be boring there in the evening? We're not fans of entertainment venues, but it's nice to have a change of scenery.
And also, curious, have you noticed the results of the thermal springs?
Regarding the flight, flying to Rome and then taking the train is not at all annoying. And if you like to look at beautiful pictures from the window, then this is for you. Alitalia also offers flights to Naples via Rome or Milan - you choose. I vacationed in Ischia with my wife in April - it was not the season, but we liked the island itself and the infrastructure. I didn't like Naples. I have never seen a dirtier city (unless Genoa is dirtier)
You will really enjoy walking around the islands. I think 10 days is enough for a complete vacation on the island + then you can stop by Rome just when the sales start.
Konstantin, thank you for your response. I really love beautiful pictures from the window. :) So I want to choose a hotel with a panoramic view, if not from the window, then at least from the terrace. If it's not a secret, what hotel did you stay in? Was it conveniently located? What type of food did you take? Did you enjoy your vacation? What did you like most personally? Have you seen the Blue Grotto on Capri? Is it included in excursions?
I ask so many questions because I want to decide how long to go.
I lived at the Giardino delle Ninfe alla Fenice hotel, our room had a view of Castello - just awesome + a huge terrace with sun loungers. Regarding excursions, I always go everywhere myself, buy a ticket and food, so I don’t know whether a visit to the Blue Grotto is included in the excursion. What I like most about this kind of holiday is the independence and the absence of “crowds” of tourists + Ischia is a very calm island, mostly adults relax here, there is little entertainment. I think 10 days on the island is enough for you
Konstantin, I looked at the photos of Giardino delle Ninfe e La Fenice. The panorama is truly wonderful. I read that the area of the territory is only 3000 sq.m. Is this a typo? Is the hotel really only occupying 30 acres? How did you book the hotel? On your own or through a tour operator? Also, how long does it take to get from Ischia Ponte to Capri? Where is the closest way to get to Capri: from the island of Ischia or from the Amalfi Coast? Unfortunately, tour operators do not have such information, and I am thinking about staying another three days in Amalfi.
Thanks to the abundance of hot mineral springs, formed as a result of volcanic activity and overlooking the sea coast, Ischia has become famous as a place of pilgrimage for tourists thirsting for beauty, youth and health.
Along with luxurious balneological resorts and thermal complexes, Ischia known for its mild subtropical climate, citrus and pine groves, golden sandy beaches, rich excursion programs and entertainment for every taste.
Ischia Porto
Ischia Porto is one of two independent districts of the island's capital. Its main attraction is a huge cargo and passenger port, built in the 19th century on the site of a volcanic crater that was extinct thousands of years ago and filled with water. Thanks to the port, life in Ischia Porto is in full swing around the clock: tourists hungry for entertainment fill the numerous local taverns, fish restaurants, bars and clubs. But still the most popular place in the daytime Ischia Porto is the famous beach, which is designated on all maps as English (Spiaggia degli Inglesi).

Ischia Ponte
The second independent district of the capital city of Ischia, located just a few bus stops from Ischia Porto. However, unlike its port “brother”, Ischia Ponte It is characterized by peace and tranquility, thanks to which it has become a popular place for families with children among Italians.
The beneficial sea air mixed with the aroma of pine, citrus and chestnut groves, fishing boats moored to the shore and the majestic Aragonese Castle create an atmosphere of peace and relaxation. And from the numerous sandy beaches, gently sloping down to the sea, there is a wonderful view of the neighboring islands of Procida and Vivara, of ancient mills and fishermen's houses.
Aragonese Castle (Castello Aragonese)
One of the main and most visited attractions of the island is the Aragonese Castle, built in the Middle Ages on the ruins of an ancient fortress from the time of the tyrant Hieron of Syracuse (5th century BC).
The castle (or fortress) is located on a volcanic island, which is solidified magma, with a diameter of about 300 m and a height of up to 113 m. Nature itself took care that the place for the future fortress was reliably protected: the slopes of the volcanic island are steep and rocky, and in some places even completely unexpectedly break off over the abyss of the sea. A fortress wall was built along the perimeter of the island, and the shore can only be reached via a bridge built over a dam, or through a secret passage - a 400-meter tunnel, cut into the rock back in 1441.

In my time Aragonese Castle was a small populated town, and at a time when foreigners tried to conquer the island, the entire population of Ischia took refuge on its territory. Later it was the residence of the bishop. In addition, inside the castle territory there was a convent of the Clarissas, belonging to the Franciscan Order. An unusual cemetery has been preserved on the territory of the monastery, where instead of graves there are stone chairs. When the nuns died, they were not buried, but were seated on chairs covered with small cages.
There is also a torture chamber preserved in the Aragonese Castle, which now houses the Museum. Among its exhibits are all kinds of torture devices used during the interrogation of prisoners and prisoners of war.

For lovers of special flavor, there is a small hotel on the territory of the Castle, as well as several restaurants.
Forio
Forio, which is the largest resort town Ischia Islands, located at the foot of the 800-meter dormant volcano Epomeo. The city was once surrounded by 12 watchtowers. Some of them, which have survived to this day, are used today as observation decks and local attractions. Most notable is the 15th-century Torrione Tower, which houses an art gallery and municipal museum. In clear weather, from its height you can clearly see not only the city itself, but also a significant part of the island.

Forio's historic center is well preserved, with its narrow streets, Baroque palaces and medieval churches. At all times, the beauty of this city has attracted creative people who came here for inspiration. Cinema lovers will enjoy visiting the ancient Villa Colombaia, which became a house-museum and became famous thanks to the cult Italian director Luchino Visconti. In total, more than 300 exhibits are collected here, among which the sets for his films, costumes, as well as photographs, awards and other memorabilia of Visconti are of particular interest.

IN Forio wonderful sandy beaches with snow-white sand, which will appeal not only to adults, but are also perfect for families with children.
Fans of nightlife will also not be disappointed, since the city has a sufficient number of discos, nightclubs, restaurants and bars.
Volcano Epomeo (Monte Epomeo)
Although Vulcan fell asleep more than 7 centuries ago, and its last eruption was observed in 1302, seismologists insist that it can wake up at any moment, and the consequences of this will be worse than those that occurred as a result of the eruption and the Pompeian disaster. In this scenario, Ischia faces the fate of the legendary Atlantis, since the island will completely go under water.
However, fearless tourists are not afraid of such forecasts, and they boldly climb to the top Epomeo to take photographs for memory. On a clear day in good weather, the 800-meter volcano offers stunning views of the entire island, including the Aragonese castle and the silhouette of the island of Capri on the horizon.
Get to Volcano Epomeo It’s not at all difficult: you need to get to the town of Serrara Fontana, and from there, along a narrow winding path made in the rock, climb to the top on foot. The climb, however, may not be an easy task, as many experience dizziness and increased heart rate, especially in the last tens of vertical meters.
If Epomeo wakes up, the consequences could be worse than the Pompeian disaster
It is curious that enterprising Italians also built a small but profitable business here – on Vulcan: not 50 meters from the top, there is a trattoria selling pizza, pasta and espresso.
And on Epomeo you can visit the small church of St. Nicholas (XIII century). In ancient times, the Basilica played the role of a kind of observation post, from which one could notice the approach of pirates and warn the inhabitants of the island about the danger.
And, of course, the main pride of the island is the thermal springs and mud, which can rejuvenate the face, body and entire body without any medicinal procedures, and also relieve stress and fatigue.
Ischia still remembers how the star couple strolled here - Clark Gable and Elizabeth Taylor. Today it is a favorite vacation spot of Angela Merkel and other equally famous personalities.
We were in Ischia Porto for only one day to visit the Aragonese Castle, feel the atmosphere of the city, compare it with Forio and see if we would like to stay here when we are in Ischia again.
The city is noticeably larger than Forio; it is also stretched along the coast, but is a fairly large resort town.
This has both a plus and a minus. Plus, because the infrastructure is richer, there are more offers, there is something to occupy your leisure time. The downside is that there are also noticeably more people, there is no quiet cozy atmosphere, like in Forio.
Cozy streets, visiting public and local residents:
There are fewer beaches and they are not as spacious and clean as in Forio. Those. In terms of beach holidays, Forio definitely wins.
Tourist shops - souvenirs and packaged sanctioned food for the trip:
This grandma signora is probably 80 years old, but she’s wearing a blouse, bright jewelry and clogs with heels that I won’t wear on vacation anymore, because I want comfort, but she wants to be elegant:
Charming Iskyanin:
A unique monument (with details):
Churches and colorful old buildings:
The chair's creative seats, by the way, are very comfortable:
On the horizon, the Aragonese Castle is the main attraction of the island:
Near the castle, people drift on yachts and kayaks, sunbathe, swim:
The place is very beautiful!
Story:
- 474 BC e. - first mention, the first defensive fortress was built by Hieron I of Syracuse, an ally of Qom in the war with the Etruscans;
- XIV century - Anjou-Sicilian house builds the Maschio tower;
- 15th century - the castle is connected to the island of Ischia by a bridge;
- 18th century - the population of the island of Ischia hides from pirates in the castle; 1892 families live in the fortress.
The castle experienced its heyday in the 16th century. At that time, on its territory there was a Clarissa monastery, a Basilian (Greek) monastery, the residence of a (Catholic) bishop, who was in charge of the cathedral and 12 churches, and a prince (with a garrison loyal to him).
Currently, the castle is a private property open to tourists and a popular attraction on the island.
Entrance to the castle is paid, but it’s worth it, there are audio guides (I’m not sure if they’re in Russian, they’re definitely in English), the tour lasts about 2-3 hours, which will fly by unnoticed. A completely modern elevator takes you upstairs.
The view from the castle is, of course, stunning:
The territory is unexpectedly large; apparently, at one time there was quite a serious infrastructure there. Such a small town on the mountain.
Climbing tier by tier, you find yourself in different parts, so different in atmosphere and purpose, only the view of the city from the panoramic platforms is invariably beautiful:
A very unusual church. Completely simple decoration and strange paintings instead of holy faces. I've never seen anything like this before.
We did not climb to the top tier; we did not find the way there. Maybe we should have walked around it:
The castle had a Catholic convent and a Greek abbey. The cemetery belonged to the monastery of St. Maria Consolazione. It was founded at the end of the 16th century and was inhabited by nuns of the Order of Clarice (mostly daughters of aristocratic families).
The bodies of the deceased nuns were placed in these devices that resembled thrones; under the hot sun, the flesh, during the process of rotting, flowed into special containers placed under them; the remaining nuns looked after this place, spending hours in prayer, falling ill, among other things, with incurable diseases. The ritual symbolized the perishability of the flesh and the immortality of the soul.
They ran away from there. It just so happened that this was the last thing we saw in the Aragonese castle, spoiling the impression a little. Everything about the castle.
What else good can you say? There are two beautiful parks there; there are no parks in Forio.
There are a lot of restaurants, we had lunch, everything was very tasty. The price tag seemed a little higher to me than in Forio. Siesta is like throughout Italy - everything is closed at lunchtime (inconvenient, but what can you do).
In terms of housing offers, Ischia Porto definitely wins because there are many more of them, but in Forio you can find decent housing cheaper, but there are no large hotels with good infrastructure.
In terms of location, Ischia Porto is still the capital and main port, but from Forio it is more convenient and quick to get to Negombo, Poseidon Gardens, Sorgetto, Nitrodi and other main attractions.
Some more photos of the city:
If you want peace, a calm atmosphere and good beaches, and also want to save a little money, it is better to stay in Forio. Forio is also more conveniently located for traveling around the island.
If you need a good expensive hotel with great infrastructure, an evening get-together, or want to travel to neighboring islands and cities (Procida, Capri, Sorento, Naples), Ischia Porto definitely wins, because... From here you can go anywhere (port and all final stops).
