We'll tell you about the main beach resorts in Portugal: where to go, what to see and what to pay attention to. Read before you go to plan your route.
Portugal stretches along the entire western coast of the Iberian Peninsula. True, the turbulent waters of the Atlantic did not have the best effect on beach holidays here. High waves, cold ocean currents and rocky shores are not the most desirable conditions.
However, the rich history, luxurious cuisine with the freshest seafood and some of the lowest prices in Europe make the country a popular tourist destination. How, even in these harsh conditions, to find a great beach on the coast and have an unforgettable vacation, read below!
basic information
This is a country of the European Union, and the euro is in use on its territory. Therefore, there will be no problems with exchanging money. In addition, the prices here are pleasantly pleasing. Food and accommodation will cost you 2 times cheaper than in neighboring Spain! For example, a bowl of soup in a cafe or restaurant can be purchased for €1-1.5. And for a huge portion of freshly caught and grilled sardines, pay only €5-7.
The official language of the country is Portuguese. The situation with English here is the same as in Spain - it is spoken mainly by residents of big cities and young people. Of course, resort hotel staff are all English speaking. But in small towns and villages far from Lisbon, few people will speak good English. However, the locals are so open and welcoming that the language barrier will not be a problem in communication.
When to go on vacation
For a beach holiday in mainland Portugal, it is better to go in May–October and choose the exact time of your vacation depending on your temperature preferences. Of course, like throughout southern Europe, summers here are dry, hot and sunny, and rain is extremely rare. It’s only when the high season officially begins that the ocean waters off the coast warm up to only +18°C. When the peak season comes to an end, the water temperature on local beaches already rises to +20°C.
If you want a truly heavenly holiday on the beaches, regardless of the time of year, go to Madeira! This island is located off the northwestern coast of Africa, off the coast of Morocco and in close proximity to the Spanish Canary Islands. Thanks to the warm and mild subtropical climate, the season here lasts all year round!

Visa
Portugal is part of the Schengen zone, which means that any Schengen visa already opened in your passport will be suitable for traveling there. If you don’t have a visa, then getting one is extremely easy! All over Russia, in almost every major city, they operate visa centers . They collect documents from citizens, send them for review to the embassy in Moscow and return passports with stamped visas.
Moreover, if you are traveling as a family, one person for all close relatives can submit documents at the visa center! The place of registration also does not affect the submission of documents, since all visas are still issued by Moscow. Therefore, you can apply for a visa not at the place of registration, but in any city convenient for you.
Package of documentsfor a visa is quite simple: a completed application form, consent to the processing of personal data, a foreign passport, 3 photos, ticket and accommodation reservations (Booking.com reservations are suitable!), as well as a traveler’s insurance policy. At the same time, even if you apply for a visa strictly for travel dates of up to 30 days, most likely you will be immediately issued a multi-Schengen visa for a period of 1 month.
And another nice feature of the Portuguese visa is that it can be extended on the spot 2 times from 30 to 90 days! In this case, your desire to relax in the country longer will be considered a sufficient reason for extending your visa, i.e. ordinary "tourism". To extend your visa, you need to contact the nearest branch of the local migration service - S.E.F. . True, you will also have to show a return ticket from the country, insurance for the entire planned duration of your stay, an accommodation reservation and prove that you have money to stay in the country (€40 per day). And, of course, you will be asked to pay to extend your visa: for 30 days – €50, for a period of more than 30 days – €65.

Usually, an excursion from Russia begins in Brest, covering European countries at the beginning of the trip: Poland, the Czech Republic, France and others.
Many travelers who visit Portugal leave recommendations for a better holiday. For girls: try not to take high-heeled shoes with you - the streets are paved with cobblestones.
For hiking in forests and parks: lighting fires or simply throwing cigarette butts on the road is punishable strictly, including imprisonment. If your money is stored on plastic cards, great! The country accepts VISA cards even in small villages. The time in the country in relation to Russia is 3 hours behind (in Madeira), 4 hours (in the Azores).

That journey to Portugal- what you need. This country is not yet on the list of the most visited vacation destinations, so there is no need to fear a massive influx of tourists.
Portugal is able to satisfy almost any request: there is delicious cuisine (both meat and seafood), the opportunity for beach and active recreation, excursion routes and interesting sights, rich nightlife. But it is worth considering that traveling to this country is not cheap. However, the impressions that Portugal gives from the days spent there are worth it.
Climate It is mild here, there are no strong temperature fluctuations. Dry and sunny summers are not particularly hot; in mountainous areas the air usually warms up to 17°C. The winter months are cool and with frequent rain. Due to the Gulf Stream, a maritime climate prevails in the north of the country. The water temperature in the south in summer can reach 22°.
The capital of Portugal is Lisbon. The city is famous for its architecture and abundance of attractions. The list of main cities and resorts includes, for example: Braga, Setubal, Madeira.
The hotel service here is excellent. Four and five star hotels predominate in the country. The most popular are those located in ancient castles. However, they are not at all budget-friendly. But you can also choose a hotel room in houses that are built in compliance with the surrounding architectural style of the area. There is no all-inclusive option in Portuguese hotels.
Perhaps the indescribable pride of Portugal are the ancient castles, cathedrals, churches and palaces that have survived to this day. The so-called “religious center” of the country is the city of Braga. Nowadays the bishop's residence is located here. Here is also the main shrine of Portugal - the Church of Bom Jesus do Monte, built in the 18th century.
The former capital of the country is the oldest city Porto. It is here that the oldest Portuguese botanical garden and the Port Wine Museum are located, and here you can also find cellars for storing this drink. Also in this place you can admire houses built in the 19th-20th centuries, go on an exciting “trip” through the markets, look into wine cellars and stroll in the coastal quarter of Ribeira.
In the current capital of Portugal, there is the longest city bridge among all European ones. It's called Vasco da Gama. You should definitely look at the statue of Christ and the arch that connects Augusta Street and Commerce Square. By the way, this particular arch with its bas-reliefs and statues is the calling card of the city.
Fatima- a favorite place for pilgrims. According to legend, it was here that the Virgin Mary revealed herself to the children. Therefore, this place attracts dozens of believers. Not far from Fatima is the city of Coimbra. On its territory you will find the remains of medieval fortress walls, and you can also look at the monasteries of Cunvento de Santa Clara a Nova and Musteiro de Santa Clara.
Fish is a popular cuisine in Portugal, but meat dishes are also available. Here they prepare delicious things from cod, perch and other types of fish. A local specialty in Madeira are dozens of types of dishes made from swordfish. But Portuguese cuisine also has a lot of other seafood, spices and fruits. And, of course, the selection of wines in this place will delight lovers of this drink. Port wine is considered a kind of calling card of the country; it is consumed both as an aperitif and for dessert.
In Portugal you can buy excellent quality clothes and shoes, gold jewelry and, of course, you should buy a couple of bottles of wine as a gift for friends and family.
The main souvenirs that are popular among tourists are: leather goods, traditional ceramics, hand-woven lace, and eye-catching various embroideries. When going shopping, remember that on weekends many stores close at 13:00. But some shopping centers with a rich selection of products, located in resort areas, keep their doors open until the night.A trip to Portugal will leave everyone with only the most pleasant impressions and memories.
A varied landscape, grottoes, cozy bays, hefty cliffs, sand spits, raging ocean waves or a calm, quiet breeze can be found on the beaches of Portugal. Also, no one will be indifferent to the many restaurants for every taste, rivers flowing into the ocean, an amazing underwater world, a stunning microclimate, magnificent landscapes that touch the soul, and the unusual colors of the rocks create a certain contrast between the mirror-clear water and the stunning blue sky.
The water is very clean, but it may seem a little unusually cool. Although this is not surprising, because ocean water can rarely be above 23 degrees. But such cool water is exactly what is missing on a sunny day, when the temperature can rise to 40 degrees.
As practice shows, most people have a positive attitude towards a beach holiday in Portugal, because even the air here is saturated with a different smell, special, unique only to these beaches, which evokes an unforgettable experience. Combined with the stunning beauty of the scenery and the power of the ocean water, it is safe to say that the goal of having a great time and relaxation will be fulfilled.You need to go to the westernmost country in Europe for several reasons:
Pena Palace (Sintra, Portugal)
- unique historical monuments that cannot be found anywhere in the world;
- warm ocean and gorgeous beaches, mild maritime climate;
- diving;
- amazingly delicious cuisine;
- Christian shrines;
- Fado folk songs;
- low crime rate.
Portugal cannot be classified as one of the cheapest countries. Until recently, this country was visited mainly by wealthy tourists who were fed up with Mediterranean resorts. But the country is also quite suitable for a budget holiday, if you know how not to overpay for food, accommodation and entertainment. The only costs that cannot be avoided are the fee for a Schengen visa - 35 euros per person.
The biggest savings are obtained if you go to the “land of Columbus” not alone, but as part of a large and friendly company - several families with children are an excellent option.
Road to the ocean
It takes a long time to get to Portugal. Direct flight from Moscow to Lisbon - 6 hours. But the ticket that provides the shortest route is not the cheapest way to reach the Portuguese capital. If you fly with a transfer, you can save up to 75 euros!
The cheapest flight options are offered by AirFrance and KLM. Both companies will deliver from Moscow to Lisbon and back with one transfer: in the first case in Paris (waiting 7 hours), in the second in Amsterdam (waiting 12 hours). Ticket - from 200 euros round trip.
The road to Portugal may result in additional tourism opportunities. From Charles de Gaulle Airport to the very center of ancient Lutetia you can take buses 350 and 351. The journey takes an hour and a ticket costs 5.70 euros one way. Guidebooks and reference books strongly recommend other routes - train or commercial bus. But these types of transport take the same amount of time to Paris, but tickets cost several times more.
There is about three hours of pure time left to explore the most famous beauties of the French capital, which is quite enough, even taking into account a short break for a snack in a cafe (coffee, peasant pie, light salad - 7-8 euros).
In Amsterdam, on the contrary, the fastest and cheapest way to get from the airport to the historical city center is by train. Ticket - 5.10 euros, journey - only 17 minutes. Net time in the city is 8 hours. It’s enough time to visit several museums, run into the red light district, and have a delicious lunch (a large sandwich with Dutch herring and onions, a glass of beer - 7 euros).
Even after taking into account the costs of buses or trains, food and sightseeing, the cost of traveling with a transfer (in Paris or Amsterdam) turns out to be less than tickets for a direct flight to Lisbon.
Portuguese housing
Hotels in Portugal are expensive. Even if you choose a tiny room in a guest house on the very edge of the city, such an overnight stay will cost at least 20 euros per day. A simple hotel, where you will be provided with a hot breakfast, from which you do not need to travel two hours to the historical center, costs 30-40 euros per night.
In order to live during your vacation in a convenient location, close to public transport stops, grocery stores, close to attractions and the ocean coast, you need to rent an apartment. This option will be especially economical if you travel in a group of 4-6 people. A three-room apartment in a good urban area costs 50 euros/day. The apartment can easily accommodate 6 adult travelers.
Living in a rented apartment allows you to save money due to several advantages:
- own kitchen allows residents to cook for themselves, which costs much less than eating in cafes, taverns, and taverns;
- Each apartment necessarily provides free coffee and tea for guests, many owners leave a set of cereals, pasta, and in the refrigerator you will find several bottles of mineral water and an indispensable bottle of wine or port - everything is included in the price;
- There is no need to pay any tips, you clean your own accommodation;
- you have the opportunity to wash your things absolutely free of charge (a washing machine is required for a rented apartment, detergents are provided free of charge).
One-room apartment with a small kitchen in a quiet city area - 30-35 euros.

Features of Portuguese cuisine
Portuguese cuisine is a mixture of African, Arabic and southern European flavours. Bright dishes, an abundance of spices and exquisite fish delicacies are the main thing in Portuguese food. Gourmets will undoubtedly enjoy:
- bacalau - specially prepared cod, both salted and dried. Served with baked potatoes and green onions. A popular dish on days of numerous fasts;
- caldo verde - green cabbage soup with hot piri-piri peppers, chorizo sausage and potatoes;
- feijoada - beans, meat, rice, vegetables in a pot. Each housewife prepares this national dish in her own way, and in Lisbon taverns this dish is the most popular among tourists;
- Paste de Belem - a bun with cinnamon and custard - is the country's calling card, the most famous dessert.
FejojoadaLunch in a regular restaurant at a supermarket (the most budget option) costs from 7 euros per person. Portions in Portugal are very generous, so one lunch is enough for two.
The most budget restaurants in Lisbon are Brazilian or Japanese. In the first you can try a countless number of meat snacks for 12 euros (the meal is quite suitable for lunch for two, a bottle of wine is included with the snacks), in the second case - a business lunch consisting of three types of sushi, pieces of chicken in soy sauce and a large cup of green tea, costs no more than 8 euros.
We will reserve supermarkets in Portuguese cities for bread (2.5 euros for a large loaf of white) and dairy products (milk - 1.40; yogurt - from 2 euros per liter bottle). It is better to buy all other products in the markets. Prices here are lower, vegetables, meat and fish are fresh. You can bargain. The only condition for saving: you need to come to the markets of Portugal very early, no later than 6-7 hours. Later, prices skyrocket and sellers become unforgiving when it comes to discounts.
Five euros will be enough to buy vegetables (greens, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots) for two or three days. Fish here - from 3 to 12 euros per kilogram, meat - from 4 to 9. Peasant olive oil - 5 euros per half-liter bottle. In the markets you can buy the best spices or ready-made hot sauces.
"Beachers"
A special feature of Portugal is the fact that the beaches in this country belong either to large hotels or to city authorities. Entrance is free, but for sun loungers and umbrellas you need to pay from 8 to 10 euros (unless you live in a luxury hotel on the ocean coast).
You can swim in the Atlantic from March to October. But Russian tourists often amuse locals by swimming in December or February. At this time, the water temperature in the ocean is from 15 to 17 degrees. For residents of the Arctic, this is the most common temperature of a summer reservoir.
The country's most famous beaches are located in the south. Adraga, Guincho, Odeceixe, Dona Ana, Falesia - all these are famous coastal settlements of mainland Portugal with a landscaped coastline and a gentle entrance to the ocean. White sand, surfing and diving schools, sea excursions, picturesque coastal cliffs. On many beaches there are small restaurants that serve the freshest fish in a wide variety of designs. Outwardly, such establishments may look very unpresentable, but the cuisine here is always excellent.
Public transport
Travel on buses or trams in large cities ranges from 1 euro to 1.50, the same price as a ticket for one trip on the metro. You can save money by purchasing a universal travel ticket for 16 euros (valid for 4 days). Without a travel card, the average tourist spends between 6 and 10 euros per day on local trips.
Taxi in Lisbon - from 5 to 15 euros, depending on the class of car and the duration of the trip.
What to see in Portugal?
The tourist season in the country continues all year round, all thanks to the abundance of various historical monuments, unusual museums, and entertainment venues. The trip to Obidos takes three hours, the ticket costs 8.85 euros;

For tourists planning to visit Portugal, it is important to know that all state museums in the country on Sundays admit everyone completely free of charge. On this day, queues accumulate in all popular places. It takes more time to visit. Therefore, you should not put off visiting cultural institutions for the weekend; you may not have time to see the most interesting things.

Car rental in Portugal is available to holders of a driving license over 25 years of age, with two years of driving experience. Renting a modest car costs 15.50 euros/day. Gasoline - 1.52 euros/liter.
When to go?
Only two months of the year are Portugal unkind to tourists - January and February. This is a time of ocean storms, chilly weather, cloudy skies. The rest of the time is favorable for visiting the country. The budget season is from March to May, from October to the end of November. The swimming season is closed at this time, but this is the best time to get acquainted with the history and culture of Portugal.
