Children's furniture from Belarus San Remi. Sanremo in Italy: between Genoa and Nice. Events in Saint-Rémy
Thanks to grandiose music festivals, as well as sports competitions, it is known not only in Italy, but also abroad. This city has long been a favorite destination for kings and princes from all over Europe, nobles and rich people, as well as adventurers. The city is a wonderful resort with an old-world atmosphere and offers tourists historical sites, picturesque landscapes, and excellent transport links to the rest of the beautiful and sunny Ligurian Floral Riviera. The city is surrounded by the Cape Verde in the east and the Black Cape in the west, where the sea air of the Riviera di Ponte reigns, filled with both Italian and French atmosphere.
Inhabits slightly less 57 thousand Human. The city stretches between hills with olive and cedar groves, and its lands are excellent for floriculture and the construction of modern residential complexes. The climate here is simply wonderful. In the distance, in the interior, the highest peaks can be seen Monte Bignone And Monte Negro. Having visited this place, one gets the impression that this city lives in “eternal spring”, with warm days, cool nights and minor climatic changes throughout the year. These conditions make it one of the most attractive tourist centers of the Italian Riviera.
History of San Remo
During times Ancient Rome a small settlement arose on the site called Villa Matutia. It received its further development in the medieval period, until the invasion of the Saracens forced the local residents to move to higher ground. A castle was built here in honor of Saint Romulus. A separate fenced quarter called La Pigna was also built, which today is known as the old city and cultural center. A few centuries later it came under the rule of the County of Ventimiglia, later the Genoese tried to subjugate it, and then the possessions were sold to the Doria and De Mari families. In the 15th century the city gained free status.
Nowadays, there are enough traces left of the ancient town of La Pina, located on a hilly area. In 1753, the long dependence on Genoa came to an end, despite the uprising of the inhabitants. During this period it was built Santa Tecla fortress, built near the beach and the old port, later better known as a prison. After some time, the city came under the rule of Savoy, then was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia, and later to the Kingdom of Italy.
Tourism Sanremo
Tourism began its development in the second half of the 18th century. During the same period the first Grand Hotel, and urban casino first opened its doors to visitors only in 1904-1906. In recent decades, new tourist port of Portosole, which is one of the most popular in Liguria. It offers its guests modern sports equipment: a golf course, a racetrack and much more. In 2006, the region's pleasure boat harbor was designated Blue Flag.
The city, located along the coast, began to be visited by famous personalities such as the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna who was the guest of honor. The city embankment is named in her honor. Also in this city there is another Russian attraction - the Orthodox Church ( Cathedral of Christ the Savior).
In summer, during the peak season, a huge number of both foreign and local tourists come to the city. If you like vibrant, city life, this period will be the most optimal for you. For lovers of a more relaxing holiday, the doors are open at almost any time of the year. In the month of February it is held music Festival. During this period, the city is crowded with tourists from around the world. If you are not a fan of modern Italian music, it would be better to postpone your trip to another month.
This city has managed to attract many famous and creative personalities with its charm: Empress Elizabeth of Austria, also known to the world under the name Sissi, Tsar Nicholas II, Alfred Nobel, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, as well as an Italian writer Italo Calvino.
What to see in San Remo
Does not include a large number of famous places separately, this city itself is one whole tourist attraction. At the same time, despite the fact that the city is small, it captivates with its diversity. In summer you can see the contrast between the expensive yachts moored at the pier and the fishing boats hanging over the water. The crowded streets of the most fashionable shops and a rather noisy market attract French tourists who love to bargain. The wide streets of the city are lined with palm trees, walking along which you will plunge into the ancient atmosphere. In the direction of the old town of La Pina, you will see amazing buildings located on steep slopes. It’s also impossible not to admire the amazing The Cathedral of San Siro and the Church of the Madonna della Costa.
In addition to tourism, it is one of the largest centers of the province of Imperia, which is famous for the production of olive oil. The city also has a second name - "City of Flowers", thanks to which it has become even more attractive to tourists from all over the world, which has a beneficial effect on the city’s economy.
The Cote d'Azur has been a place of attraction for the wealthy public for the second hundred years. The Principality of Monaco with the casino city of Monte Carlo, sparkling Cannes and luxurious Nice...
There are also two dozen resorts on this coast, located both in France and in neighboring Italy. One of them is the city of San Remo, where I came to watch the rally. You've probably never heard of such a resort? But it was no less popular than Nice in its time, but that time is long gone.
A couple of years ago I already wrote about how resorts are dying. But there, near Odessa, death was swift. San Remo is also dying, but this process has lasted for decades.
1. Sea. What everyone comes here for has long ceased to play the most important role in such resorts. There are almost no beaches here, but every half-decent hotel (and others are not kept here) has its own swimming pool.
2. The organizers of Lazurka resorts relied on casinos, theaters, variety shows and cabarets. What does this sea mean to the rich public?
3. Casinos built many years ago are here to stay. But they stand almost empty: why go to San Remo if there is Monte Carlo? But, as I already wrote, they cannot boast of a seaside holiday here.
That’s why San Remo is almost empty of tourists, although the high season is just ending here, and there should be many times more people.
5. A pair of bathers. The woman has great dimples on her butt :)
6.
7. How are the carabinieri different from the police, and why do the police suffer?
8. Hills and slides start almost immediately from the sea, so San Remo is built in several tiers.
9. Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Orthodox. As in Nice, emigrants of the first wave fled here. Their descendants still go to this church and have preserved their faith, although the tobacco patriarch is not here, as you understand, and they don’t sing Pussy Riot in the church.
10.
11. In some monuments, unusual bullet holes are visible. This woman was shot in the chest by someone. I think during the Second World War.
12. Do you remember who the Italians were for? But there are also monuments.
13. A huge number of Russian emigrants ended up in San Remo, but not at all the descendants of the tsars. Almost all waitresses in restaurants and maids in hotels are Russian-speaking; most often they are Ukrainian.
14. Does your imagination picture young ladies from the villages, silly Cinderellas who came here to conquer Italy? Some of them were themselves conquered by the Italians when they came on vacation. We fell in love, moved in, ran away, but there is no turning back: going back is at least shameful, but what if you also have a small child in your arms? And there are a lot of such stories here. Although this is about Russian women, Ukrainian women are usually more prudent and come to work right away.
15. I don’t know if I would have liked San Remo more if I had come here in the summer. The weather was very changeable.
16. But quite sunny and pleasant, plus twenty, light wind.
17. The city is gradually taking over and displacing the resort. Now only a couple of streets remain from the resort, the rest are houses where service personnel of hotels, casinos, and restaurants once lived. Now they are not servants, just residents, but is that any better for them?
18. Old age is not a joy, neither for a person nor for a city. Cities are also aging.
19. Well, this is how they live.
20. Italians don’t really like to close themselves off from their neighbors with three-meter fences; they have nothing to hide. Neither wealth nor poverty.
21. Although the love for small cars here is dictated not by wealth, but by geographical conditions.
22. The city was built in tiers, several floors.
23. They say that Hong Kong was built in approximately the same way, but I was not there.
24.
25.
26. Having a private house here is great luck, and sometimes even luxury. It is a rare case, by the way, when in Europe a small city almost entirely consists of apartment buildings.
27.
28. Closer to the sea, areas are even poorer, houses are even smaller and simpler. It would seem that it should be the other way around, but the opposite law works here: the higher, the more expensive.
29. Walking along these streets, I remembered the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, it’s almost the same here.
30. The calling card of Italy is laundry hanging on a line.
31. Street icons.
32. Apartment numbers.
33. Pieces of heaven are the most delicious thing that happens in such neighborhoods.
34. Well, and all sorts of fragments of real antiquity, for the sake of which I am ready to walk through such neighborhoods again and again.
35. Local residents.
36. Blacks sell Louis Vuitton bags. Fake, of course.
37. Bags and expensive clothes are sewn right here, in the gateways. Clothes prices here are one and a half times more expensive than in Paris. Where is the guarantee that the stores are not selling the same fakes?
38. Pink Panther.
39. Bags and clothes again.
40.
41.
42.
43.
44.
45. In stores, in addition to the autumn-summer-winter collection, you can also buy a real racing suit. In the fall, the famous rally takes place in San Remo, for which I came here.
46. I will tell you about the rally in the coming days. This is a real Event for the locals! One city madman decided that he was a racing car, put on a helmet, on top of which he glued a cardboard box, and “drove” around the city, making characteristic sounds. Yeah, a guy without a muffler!
Let's communicate more!

In the region of Liguria, in the province of Imperia, there is a resort town, the city of music - San Remo. Golden beaches, famous music festivals and a huge selection of attractions have attracted numerous tourists here for many years. San Remo is a city of song, a city of great composers, artists and incorrigible romantics.
History of Sanremo
The city of Sanremo has existed for hundreds of years. In the past it was a small beautiful town. Gradually, San Remo grew and by the 19th century it became a major tourist resort city. San Remo is the favorite city of the Russian Empress Maria Feodorovna. Under her leadership, a large Russian community was created in the city. And along the entire perimeter of the embankment of the square, unique (at that time) Egyptian palm trees were planted. San Remo became a real abode of the Russian nobility. Famous artists, poets, government officials and imperial subjects came here.
Sights of Sanremo
The famous Golden Beaches of Sanremo
The golden beaches of Sanremo attract those who want to soak up the sun and sunbathe on the golden sand. A huge number of beaches are located along the entire perimeter of the embankment. These are sandy and sand-pebble beaches.
Nearby, tourists can go shopping or have a snack in one of the many cafes. A huge range of hotels and inns awaits their visitors on the Sanremo promenade. These are large luxury hotels and small cozy hotels.
In the northern part of Corso Matteotti (the main street of San Remo) is the oldest quarter of the city, La Pigna. Medieval streets, steep slopes and numerous passages turn this quarter into a real labyrinth. But this makes it even more attractive to tourists. Along the way you can see a large beautiful building - the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa. Leaving the sanctuary, tourists find themselves on Palace Street. There is a huge number of historical and architectural monuments here. The main attraction of this street is the ancient San Siro Cathedral.
The luxurious villa of the famous scientist and entrepreneur, Alfred Nobel, is of great interest to tourists. This is a rich old building made in the Renaissance style. Within its walls are collected various objects telling about the life and work of the great scientist.
Casino Sanremo
For gambling lovers, San Remo offers a visit to the famous Italian casino Monte Carlo. The magnificent appearance of the building and its luxurious interior have been attracting the most distinguished public and ordinary tourists for many years.
Cathedral of Christ the Savior (Chiesa Russa)1913 was the year of the construction of the Orthodox Russian Church in San Remo - the beautiful Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Numerous Russian icons can be seen within the walls of the temple.
Music festivals in Sanremo
Every year the city hosts a magnificent festival of famous national pop songs. The months of the festival are February or March. During these months, famous pop singers from all over Italy, as well as numerous tourists, come to Sanremo. The festival is held within the walls of the casino and broadcast on Italian television.
Reminder for tourists
You can get to the city of Sanremo by train from, and Ventimiglia. Numerous buses depart daily from Sanremo bus station to the French border.
To get around the city, many tourists use taxis, some rent a car, and some even rent a scooter.
How many tons of paper and megabytes of traffic have already been spent on stories about Russian-Italian friendship and friendly relations? It is impossible to accurately calculate, and it is hardly worth engaging in such a useless activity. It is better to see the rosy state of things with your own eyes - for example, by coming on vacation to the resort of San Remo. The city, where the famous song festival is held, awaits our tourists with open arms at any time of the year.

What to see in Sanremo?
The proximity to Monte Carlo evokes certain thoughts regarding San Remo, and with good reason. There really is a casino here, and an old one at that (built in 1905), in the Art Nouveau style. The idea of its construction came here thanks to the wife of the Prince of Monte Carlo, who watched with emotion the playing of cards by her husband’s guests. The games apparently took place with passion and enthusiasm, because the princess eventually advised her husband to build a separate house for such entertainment. Which was done - and soon gambling houses began to open along the entire Ligurian coast. By the way, local residents of San Remo were previously strictly prohibited from visiting the casino. Times have changed, but many Italians still rightly believe that it is better to bring money into your own home than into a gambling house. Among many tourists, San Remo has received the name “Italian Monte Carlo”.

Many residents of Sanremo ironically call it a “paradise for retirees”: the mild climate and all the conditions for a quiet life really attract many wealthy elderly people here. But don’t think that life at this resort consists entirely of manifestations of glamor and quiet solidity. In fact, San Remo is very democratic: here in one port, amazingly luxurious tourist yachts and modest dishes of local residents sway side by side, the best hotels and poor houses coexist on the street. In a word, San Remo exists according to the principle of “live and let live.” Moreover, the exotic plants, palm trees, sea and sun planted here are enough for all segments of the society vacationing and living here. Let us consider ourselves part of the vacationing community, since we did not have the opportunity to live permanently in San Remo. And if so, then during a short vacation you need to: a) get to know the city like the back of your hand; b) buy something as a souvenir; c) be sure to take into account several facts from the history of the resort - for example, in order to amaze their work-weary colleagues with them at corporate events.

Let's start with the first one. If this is your first time in Sanremo, it would be a crime not to go on a tour of the historical center on your first day. It is colloquially called "Pigna", which in Italian means either "pine cone" or "bunch of grapes". So choose depending on your personal inclinations and preferences. This will not change the essence: the rows of houses located on the hillside from a distance look very much like scales. Or grapes in a bunch.

The medieval center of the resort is a real labyrinth of passages, covered winding streets, frightening-looking gateways and everyday romance in the form of wall inscriptions and clothes hung outside to dry. However, after the walk-through courtyards of St. Petersburg, such a kingdom of claustrophobia seems quite clear and welcoming - you just need to wear sneakers: many of the slopes are very steep. Besides, you can get lost. But, following the well-known truth, in this case it is all the personnel, or rather, the people, who decide. Here they are smiling, friendly and always ready to suggest a way out of the next labyrinthine turn. First of all, you will be advised not to engage in tracking, but to go straight to the sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa, built in the 17th century. There are always a lot of tourists here, and it’s unlikely to get lost. At the same time, you can see a painting by Domenico Fiazella and the famous wooden sculptures of Antoine Maria Maragliano.
“Pigna” has streets for every taste: some decorated with flowers...
... and ones that resemble the catacombs of castles. Photo biancoloto.com
Next, the path lies to Palace Street (via Palazzo), from which you can get to the famous Cathedral of San Siro, built in the 13th century. Not far from here you can see the flower market, which comes to life with new colors and smells every morning. This area is often called the “flower Riviera” because of the ideal climate that allows many varieties to be grown for sale.
A must visit and Alfred Nobel's villa, creator of dynamite and founder of the world famous award. The scientist and businessman himself called his house in San Remo “my nest”, and only at the end of his life he renamed it “Nobel Villa”. On this occasion, he wrote in his diary: “Two birds live in the nest, and I am hopelessly alone...”. Nobel died here on December 10, 1896. Today, his villa at Corso Felice Cavallotti, 112 houses the headquarters of the International Institute for Human Rights.

Not far from famous Casino Sanremo rises Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Christ the Savior, stunningly beautiful on the outside, a little more modest on the inside. The church was built by Russian nobles in 1912; members of the imperial family, who vacationed in San Remo in the winter, and especially Empress Maria Alexandrovna, the wife of Tsar Alexander II, often liked to visit here.

The temple, built in the likeness of Russian churches of the 17th century, was designed by the architect Alexei Shchusev, however, it never made it to San Remo, so the project was completed by the Italians, led by Pietro Agosti. The “highlight” of the temple are five beautiful domes and, inside, a luxurious iconostasis with copies of icons of Mikhail Vrubel (the originals are in the Kiev Valdimir Cathedral). Today, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior holds regular services in Russian.

San Remo wouldn't be an upscale resort if it didn't have shopping options. The center of trade here is located on Via Matteoti (in the modern center of San Remo) - there are boutiques of the most famous brands, local restaurants, interspersed with houses built in the 19th century. This original combination gives the resort center a very special atmosphere - a kind of languid provincialism with the simultaneous ability to satisfy consumer interest of any level. The assortment differs from Roman and Milanese, as do the prices - to a greater extent. Not far from here there is another attraction - Borea di Olmo, a 16th century palace. Settled here Archaeological Museum of Sanremo with a very interesting collection of objects found during excavations in the vicinity of the resort.

Nightlife Sanremo
When dusk begins to fall on San Remo, the city comes to a standstill. But not for long - only to wake up a moment later, assess the situation and prepare for a completely different life. The night side in San Remo is magnificent - as, indeed, in any fashionable resort. Local restaurants are among the first to be on alert: on the way to a casino or nightclub, many wealthy tourists stop here for a light dinner. When heading to the boardwalk, check out this short list of cute local establishments. You should definitely try the dried cod and the original variety of pizza “piscialandrea” - something like focaccia with tomatoes, anchovy, garlic and olive oil. You can do this at the charming little “Dick Turpin”, located near Porto Vecchio, long used by local fishermen. Or “Paolo & Barbara” at via Roma, 47, owned by the Masieri couple. The signature dish here is the local crayfish, the meat of which melts in your mouth and is accentuated by the chilled wine. If you want to have a meal and enjoy the views of Sanremo, welcome to Gli Ulivi. Located on the slope of one of the hills, the restaurant gives you the opportunity to view San Remo from above, accompanied by a bottle of homemade wine and the aroma of meat cooked on coals.

Although it’s a little hard to go to a disco after something like this, it would be a big mistake to miss this event. At least out of pure curiosity, if your age does not allow you to dance to the mixes of fashionable European DJs. Actually, the best discos are not in San Remo itself - it is too aristocratic for the title of “city of parties”. This is, rather, a city of the elite, the nobility of the century before last, blue blood and white bones - fur salons in a city where the temperature in winter does not drop below +15, they just don’t open. You will have to go not far - to, or to the east, to. But there you will definitely experience all the delights of club-party-disco life.
To be honest, San Remo is indeed a very rich city. In terms of the number of events held here, excluding the world-famous song competition, it ranks one of the first places not only in Italy, but also in Europe. The municipality of San Remo bears a significant part of the costs of arranging all kinds of entertainment. For example, when a fireworks festival was held in this resort town, San Remo paid for all expenses for organizing and purchasing pyrotechnics from its own treasury. And this, by the way, is an hour of show from each country. You can do the math yourself, the principle is much more important - San Remo has not spared money for its guests, does not regret it, and will never regret it. Which is why we adore him, accordingly.
What to see in the vicinity of Sanremo?
Bordighera, Monet's "muse"
If you walk along the streets of Bordighera, you will definitely have the feeling that you are in England, and there is an explanation for this: in the nineteenth century, the fishing village was transformed by the British into a large city. It's always nice here, even in winter. Among the city's honored guests is the impressionist Claude Monet, who, inspired by the natural landscapes of the Riviera landscapes, painted 34 canvases here! Bordighera Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for many years. In addition to the beach, the city is famous for the Argentine Promenade, the longest promenade of the Riviera, which was opened by Evita Peron herself (hence the name), who stayed in Borgidera in July 1947. Once in Borgidera, also be sure to check out Villa Margherita, located on Via Roma, the former private residence of Queen Margaret of Savoy; Since 2011, the villa has been home to an art gallery with the collections of the Terruzzi Foundation.

Ventimiglia
A stone's throw from the French border, the town of Ventimiglia welcomes guests with warm sea, echoes of history and many interesting sights. You will be enchanted by Villa Hanbury and its beautiful botanical gardens, where Mediterranean plants and tropical flowers from around the world coexist in harmony. In the very center of the medieval city is the ancient fortress of the Dukes of Ventimiglia, and next to it are two religious masterpieces: the Cathedral of the Assumption, with its apses and baptistery, one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in the city, and the Romanesque church of St. Michael from the eleventh century.

Balzi Rossi
About 30 km from San Remo and less than a kilometer from the state border with France lies one of the most exciting open-air archaeological museums in Liguria: the caves of Balzi Rossi with unique wall petroglyphs carved into the rock with breathtaking views of the sea. It can be easily reached by taking a slight detour from the SS1 Aurelia highway. The Balzi Rossi zone, so called by the name of the rocks from which the cape overlooking the sea is formed - a rock of dolomitic rudite limestone, more than 100 meters high. Balzi Rossi is the last famous attraction, “seeing off” for those leaving Italy and “welcoming” those arriving from France. It is located very close to the border, a stone's throw from Menton, France.

Dolceacqua, Borgo Dream
The land of Ligurian olive oil DOP and wine, especially Rossese Dolceacqua DOC, are not all the reasons why you should visit Borgo Dolceacqua. There is an unforgettable medieval atmosphere here, enhanced by a stroll through the hilltop ruins of Doria Castle and views of the spectacular Roman Bridge arching across the Nervia River. Here everything seems harmonious and hospitable, “awaiting” the traveler. In the local olive groves grow olives that produce DOP Riviera Ligure olive oil, and in the shady vineyards the “raw materials” for excellent wines mature. To enjoy the special atmosphere of this place, we recommend coming here on August 16, the day of the Michetta festival, which celebrates the small oval-shaped regional brioche.

Apricale, artists' village
Apricale, a medieval village located in the Nervia Valley, just 13 km from the coast. Its name means “caressed by the sun”: you can’t blame the ancient Greeks - the sun here really “caresses” everything and everyone tirelessly, from slate roofs to travelers. The town's main square often hosts some very picturesque events, including the Olive Oil Festival, the Spring Festival, Valentine's Day and the Pansarola (Pancake) Festival, held every second Sunday in September. Be sure to visit the Lizard Castle, which was built in the tenth century by the Counts of Ventimiglia and now houses a rich museum and open-air theatrical performances in the summer. Apricale is a historical village that was adored by artists, who often left their contributions among the streets of the borgo. If you look closely at the facades and bell tower of the church, you will see a number of modern frescoes.

Pigna
Pigna is a lovely medieval village located at the foot of the Ligurian Alps Regional Natural Park, close to the border with France and Piedmont. Clinging to the hills, with narrow stone streets, crowned with arches and ancient loggias, full of descents and ascents, Pigna amazes with its historical evidence and beautiful landscapes. Admire them from the loggia on the Old Square (XV sec.), a balcony with panoramic views of the green valley. A little further from the center is the Church of San Michele, where there is a Renaissance altar of exceptional beauty by Giovanni Canavesio. Be sure to try the local dishes: roast goat meat, gran pistau and excellent cheeses. Among the events we recommend attending is the mushroom festival, which takes place annually at the end of September, with tastings, music, exhibitions and prizes.

Perinaldo
Borgo Perinaldo is primarily famous for its astronomical observatory, named after Gian Domenico Cassini, the famous astronomer who was born here. Today at the observatory it is possible to observe the stars at night in the company of omniscient astronomers. For those who are fond of gastronomic voyages, it will be remembered that it is in Perinaldo that the birthplace of the typical Jerusalem artichoke, which was imported from Provence in the Napoleonic era, is located. It grows almost everywhere, and Jerusalem artichoke is harvested from May to June. On the second Sunday of May, Perinaldo hosts the Festival of Jerusalem Artichokes from Perinaldo and Taggiasca Olive Oil: a magnificent fair and tastings are organized in the streets of the borgo for everyone, where you can taste Jerusalem artichokes prepared in the best traditions.

Principality of Seborga (Principato di Seborga)
There are three flags flying in this borgo: one Italian, one of the Principality’s own and the orange flag of the Touring Club. We are located very close to the Principality of Monaco: Seborga, by the way, is also a full-fledged principality, where a prince still rules, albeit only formally, issuing his own laws and even his own coin. Despite the fact that today this arrangement mostly serves only to attract tourists, in 1729 the Borgo was truly a medieval principality and flourished until the unification of Italy. We recommend visiting Seborga on the Feast of St. Sebastian, January 20, or during the Spring Festival at Easter, when particularly lavish celebrations are held here with historical reenactments and parades.

If not Screaming Eagle, then what? Affordable Napa Wines A peculiarity of American winemaking is that the higher the price, the lower the popularity. But the world has heard a lot about cult wines such as Screaming Eagle. We were able to find some interesting, attractively priced wines that offer a taste of California styles.
