Phi Phi Island - photos and reviews about the excursion to Maya Bay. Phi Phi Islands, Thailand: description, attractions and interesting facts Phi Phi Archipelago
Phi Phi Island (Thai: หมู่เกาะพีพี) in Thailand is located between Phuket and the mainland. It is a group of islands: two large and several small. These islands gained worldwide fame after the release of the cult film Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio. Administratively, the Phi Phi Islands belong to the Thai province of Krabi.
Phi Phi Island in Thailand
What is so attractive about these islands? Why does the flow of tourists to Phi Phi not dry up every year, but only increase? The answer is simple. There are plenty of such islands in Thailand, but Phi Phi has a developed tourist infrastructure. There are cafes, guesthouses, bars and good internet. On Phi Phi you can live almost in the wild, while still enjoying the benefits of civilization.
The archipelago consists of six islands. The largest of them is the northern island of Phi Phi Don. This is what they mean when they say Phi Phi. This island has all the tourist infrastructure and there is a pier where ferries and boats dock.
To the south is the uninhabited island of Phi Phi Ley. This is where they filmed one of the episodes of the movie Beach. The place where the film was filmed is called Maya Bay. There is no housing or cafes on Phi Phi Ley, and its territory is a protected reserve.
In addition to these two large islands, there are four small ones, which are notable for the fact that there are rocks, water caves and excellent snorkeling near these islands. The water around the entire archipelago is amazingly clean, and the bottom is covered with white sand. The landscapes of these islands are truly very beautiful and we highly recommend visiting Phi Phi for at least one day.
How to get to Phi Phi
The islands are located in the Andaman Sea approximately halfway between Phuket and Krabi. They can only be reached by sea. The easiest way to do this is from the nearby large island of Phuket, from where comfortable ferries depart every hour. You can also get there from the coast of Krabi, for example from Ao Nang Beach. If you are now reading this article while somewhere in Syktyvkar, you will first have to buy a plane ticket to Thailand. This can be done, for example here. We have a separate page for finding cheap air tickets, full of life hacks and useful links.
You can buy ferry tickets at any tourist kiosk in Phuket. You can buy a ferry ticket yourself online here. A ticket to Phi Phi from Phuket costs an average of $10 one way. Travel time takes 2 hours. The ferry is a large comfortable vessel with a bar, TV and air conditioning. You can take your luggage with you, which will be secured on the deck. During the trip you will be able to go out on deck and take photos.
If it is difficult for you to buy a ferry ticket and get to the pier on your own, then watch this excursion in Russian, which includes visits to all the interesting places in the archipelago. The price includes transfer from your hotel in Phuket to the pier.
In addition to the ferry, tourist shops may offer you other ways to get to the islands. They can be combined with some excursions or other islands. We didn't find them interesting because the price was a little too high.
An ideal trip is from Phuket or Krabi to Phi Phi Don island, where you can rent accommodation. And from this island you can easily organize boat excursions to nearby uninhabited islands. It will be both cheaper and more interesting. After Phi Phi, you can visit another beautiful and secluded place - Railay Beach. This is a part of the mainland, cut off by high cliffs, and you can also get there only by water.
Phi Phi Don
The largest island of the Phi Phi archipelago. It has a developed tourism infrastructure. It also has a Tonsai pier where large ferries can dock. There are almost no roads on the island. The maximum you can do is rent a bicycle or a motorbike, which you also won’t be able to go anywhere with because there are no roads.
Until recently, it was an ordinary, almost uninhabited island, of which there are many around Thailand. However, after the film The Beach, crowds of tourists from all over the world flocked to Phi Phi. The Thais quickly began to monetize this flow and cafes, bars, and guesthouses appeared on the island.
In 2004, the islands were severely damaged by a tsunami, which was caused by a powerful earthquake with its epicenter nearby in the Andaman Sea. The island was completely wiped off the face of the earth. A thousand people are still listed as missing. Phuket also suffered greatly then. But more on that another time.
Phi Phi Don Island has several picturesque beaches, with white sand and clear water. The beaches on both sides of the island's isthmus can be very noisy. Especially Lo-Dalam. European youth have occupied this place and are throwing noisy night parties. If silence at night is important to you, then look for housing as far away from this place as possible.
What to see on Phi Phi Don?
In addition to the beautiful beaches, you can go up to the observation deck, which offers panoramic views of both bays. There are two ways to get to this place, both of which are dirt paths uphill. So be prepared for a tough climb.
Phi-Phi Don Island. View from the observation deck
Another entertainment option can be a boat trip around the island with a stop at hidden and inaccessible beaches. This is very interesting, since Phi Phi Don is very beautiful and you can meet this beauty almost face-to-face.
Also, be sure to organize a boat trip to the island of Phi Phi Ley with a mandatory visit to Maya Bay (the Beach was filmed there) and Pileh Lagoon (also called Blue Lagoon). We will talk about these places in more detail below, since they are much more interesting than anything else in this archipelago.
Renting a boat costs an average of 1,500 Baht for three hours. Three hours will be enough to go around the island with stops on wild beaches. And in another three hours you can visit Phi Phi Ley with all its attractions and snorkeling.
There are also diving centers on Phi Phi Don, where professional instructors will organize a luxurious underwater excursion for you and provide you with the most modern diving equipment.
Hotels on Phi Phi
There are a lot of hotels on the island. On Phi Phi you can find budget bungalows without air conditioning for 300-400 baht per day and expensive 5-star hotels with a astronomical price tag. The average price for a good hotel with air conditioning is 800-1000 baht per night. You can find accommodation right on the spot, but it is best to book a hotel in advance via the Internet. Almost always the price through booking.com will be lower than what they tell you at the hotel reception. Tested repeatedly from personal experience.
The cheapest hotels in Phi Phi are located on the isthmus of the island, in the areas of Tonsai and Lo Dalam. This area is the most youthful and noisy. Life here involves daily parties until the early morning. If you don't want to spend the night next to the dance floor, then look for a hotel away from this place.
Below you can see a map of hotels on Phi Phi Don Island. The map is clickable and you can see prices for specific dates.
Beaches of Phi Phi
All the islands of the archipelago have beautiful and sometimes almost deserted beaches. On Phi Phi Don island the most popular beaches are Lo Dalam, Tonsai Bay And Long Beach. These beaches are ideal for swimming. The entrance to the water is smooth, the sand is soft and white. In addition, there are almost never waves on Lo Dalam beach. But there is one caveat to this beach - you won’t be able to swim at low tide.
The rest of the beaches of Phi Phi Don island can only be reached by water. Any boatman from the central beaches will be happy to take you. Monkey Beach is a beach where you will be greeted by a flock of wild monkeys. You can treat them to fruits or nuts, but at the same time keep an eye on your things - glasses and phones. Monkeys can snatch your phone and you will never see it again.
Nui Beach is a very small beach, which is closed by rocks on three sides. In the morning and evening it is almost always deserted. You can have a great time together on this beach.
In addition, there are small, unnamed beaches on each island of the archipelago. There are a lot of them and there is no point in describing them. You can see them on a boat tour and ask the boatman to stop there if you really like this beach.
Phi Phi Ley
Phi Phi Ley is the second largest island in the archipelago. It is located geographically just south of Phi Phi Don. This island is famous primarily for Maya Bay, where one of the episodes of the film The Beach was filmed.
You can go to Phi Phi Lei from any beach of its northern brother - Phi Phi Don island. All you have to do is approach any Thai on a longboat (a long motor boat with a propeller that plunges into the water on a long arm). A three-hour excursion to Phi Phi Ley Island will cost 1,500 baht (for the entire boat). Three hours will be enough for you to see all the bays and caves of Phi Phi Lei and even have time for snorkeling.
It is best to go to the island in the early morning or late afternoon. At this time there will be fewer tourists, it will not be so hot, and you will also be able to take good photos due to the position of the sun.
Phi Phi Lei is completely uninhabited. Its steep banks in the form of sheer high cliffs leave no chance for travelers. But it has two absolutely stunning bays. One of them is Maya Bay. There is a fee to visit this bay - 400 baht per person, but you can save money. You will have to pay if you go ashore. You can stay on the boat and see Maya Bay from the water. This is even better, since it is likely that there will be several thousand people in the bay with you.
Maya Bay. Phi Phi Lei Island
Personally, this is precisely why I don’t like Maya Bay. Over the course of several years, tourists have greatly damaged the island’s ecosystem. In 2018, Thai authorities closed Maya Bay to tourists to remove tons of garbage. The bay was closed from June to September 2018.
Another beautiful bay on the island is Pileh Lagoon (Blue Lagoon), it is located on the opposite side of Phi Phi Ley island. This bay is not famous for anything, and it is not visited by 5 thousand tourists daily, but it is very beautiful, and if you are not susceptible to the hysteria surrounding the movie The Beach, then a visit to Pileh Lagoon will be much more interesting than Maya Bay.
The boatman will take you to this bay and you can get off the boat. The water depth is shallow, about one meter. The water is very clean and the sand is white. The bay is surrounded by high cliffs covered with green vegetation. The place is very beautiful.
Phi Phi on your own or excursion?
There are inexpensive excursions to Phi Phi Island from Phuket and Krabi. The excursion can be with or without an overnight stay. Maybe you can find an inexpensive sightseeing tour for one day. What to choose is up to you. We prefer to visit the islands on our own by ferry, while also booking accommodation on our own.
You can combine a visit to Phi Phi with neighboring islands, such as Lanta and Railay (yes, this is not an island). To get acquainted with these places for the first time, one night on each island will be enough.
Phi Phi Island or Phi Phi Island is a place where many people dream, have dreamed, and some will dream of going, and for good reason, because this is one of the best and most beautiful islands in the Kingdom.
Phi Phi Island in Thailand - view from the observation deck
Personally, I first learned about this place by watching the movie The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. It was quite a long time ago, but images from the film still live in my memory. At that moment, I remember that I very much dreamed of visiting those amazingly beautiful places at least once and voila, I succeeded. As it turned out, you don’t need to be a millionaire to do this, it’s enough to have a great desire and go towards your goal.
Phi Phi Islands
Islands two, Phi Phi Don And Phi Phi Ley. Let's take a brief look at both of them so that you can imagine what and where awaits you.
Briefly about Phi Phi Don
This is an island inhabited by people, on which the life of Thais and... Its size is no more than 6-8 km. (out of approximately 13 km.) of populated territory. Despite its size, there are quite a lot of hotels, as well as restaurants, SPA salons, bars and beach discos.
You can't drive a motorbike on the island, so you won't be able to rent one. I think this is one of the reasons why it remains so beautiful, the Thais at least somehow care about it.
Briefly about Phi Phi Ley
This is a small island located approximately 30 minutes by ferry from Phi Phi Don. By the way, the film Beach was filmed on it in May Bay. There are no hotels, bars or discos on this island; you cannot stay here for a long time, only with an excursion for 2 days and one night with an overnight stay in tents.
The island consists of three main bays such as: Maya Bay, Loh Samah And Pi Ley. The first bay is the most popular as it is the only one with a beach, the other two bays are suitable for snorkeling or diving.
You can usually get here by purchasing a tour or renting a boat with a boatman (pay by the hour). I will write more about this excursion and prices for a boatman in another article.
More about Phi Phi Don Island
Upon arrival on the island, you will need to pay 20 baht as a cleaning fee and maintenance fee on the island.
Helpers will be waiting for you on the island, who will find you a hotel, take your bags to the right place, on their carts, or sell you some kind of excursion. You need to find out in advance which beach you will be staying at, since you can only get from the pier to the desired beach by boat, unless you are staying at: Ton Sai Bay or Loh Dalam Bay, in these areas, the hotel can only be reached on foot.
Some hotels provide free transport from the pier to the desired beach, so when booking, check in advance whether this is available or not. If there is, then Thais will be waiting for you on the pier with a sign with the name of the hotel.
Phi Phi Island port - boatmen waiting for their clients
Advice: when traveling to Phi Phi, book a hotel in advance; in high season there is a critical shortage of places here; in a separate article I will write about some of them, as well as their features. Not all places on Phi Phi are quiet; in some hotels it is simply impossible to sleep because of the night discos.
There is a good pedestrian road on the island, so getting around here is quite easy; along the paths you can find restaurants and cafes with a pleasant interior and not-so-expensive cuisine and more affordable ones; there are no problems with food here.
Also on your way there will be many hotels and guesthouses, tour desks and diving centers; here they are most common.
Phi Phi Island Map
I am posting for you a map of Phi Phi Island, namely its central part, where life is in full swing.
But here is a general, tourist map, it is clickable.
Beaches on Phi Phi Don Island
Unfortunately, I was not able to visit all the beaches of the island, but I will tell you about the ones I visited - Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalam Bay, and later I will add descriptions of the missing beaches.
Ton Sai Bay Beach on Phi Phi Island
This is the first bay that you will see upon arrival on the island; it is on it that the port is located from where boats and ferries depart and arrive.
Its central and right part (if you look at the island from the sea) is not suitable for swimming, there are too many boats and boats in the central part, and in the right part there are a lot of stones and dead corals. Photo below.
The left side is more suitable for swimming, there is even a beach area with sun loungers and umbrellas.
Unfortunately, on the day I took the pictures, it was cloudy on this side of the beach, so you won’t be able to appreciate all the beauty from the photo above, but you can still make a superficial assessment.
I would like to note an important nuance: in this bay you can sleep peacefully at night, since there are almost no discos or noisy establishments nearby.
Loh Dalam Bay beach on Phi Phi Island
This bay has a large, long beach; it is more suitable for beach holidays and sunbathing, unlike its neighbor. Here you can rent a sun lounger, the price is 50 baht, or lay your towel on an empty spot on the beach, which is what almost all the young people I met there do.
You can see a photo of Loh Dalam Bay beach below.
Having visited these places, I concluded that the season in Thailand matters, so if you want to see Phi Island in a more beautiful form, then it is better to go here from late December to February.
My opinion and review about this beach on Phi Phi Island. There are quite a lot of people, but there are enough places, the sand is white, soft, when the sun comes out it is very beautiful, the water is clear, azure, the entrance to the sea is pleasant, there are no algae, stones or corals at the bottom, this beach did not cause any negative emotions in me.
Video of Phi Phi Island from the observation deck
IMPORTANT! You can get to the observation deck from two sides. 1) Up the steps through the hotel, you will need to pay 20 baht for entry; it’s a high, difficult walk, be prepared. 2) On the way, you can rent a motorbike to get to the top or pay a taxi driver to take you (price 250-300 baht (I think)), or you can walk, but it’s very far. Therefore, it is better to use option N1.
Prices on Phi Phi Island
I won’t delve deeply into prices, but I will describe an approximate picture of the island’s prices.
- Food prices: on the streets in cafes and eateries from 60 baht for a slice of pizza or a plate of Thai food. In restaurants and cafes about 300 baht per person.
- Housing prices: Shared rooms from 190 baht per bed, private room from 300-500 baht, a room in a more or less decent hotel from 1200 baht, a room in a good hotel from 2500 baht.
- Entertainment prices: Alcohol on the streets starts from 150 baht per bucket, there are prices the same as everywhere else, hookah 300-400 baht, drinks in bars from 100 baht and above.
- Prices for excursions: from 600 baht and above, depending on where. (I will write a separate article about this)
- Massage prices: can be found for 200, but the standard price tag is 300 baht for a Thai massage.
- Diving prices: from 3,500 thousand baht for two dives.
Prices are for 2012, low season; in high season they are approximately 30-40% higher.
Phi Phi Island at night
When night falls on Phi Phi, on Loh Dalam Bay beach, a completely different life awakens. Bars and beach discos open and young people get out of their rooms to get another dose of adrenaline... some from discos, some from jumping into the crowd, some from alcohol and other pranks, some from meeting new people, and some - from a fight between your friend or foe...;)
And now everything described above is only in photos and videos.
Preparations begin for a huge flow of young people who want to have a blast this night like it’s the last time... Merchants are preparing buckets of alcohol, a starter kit...
Street bakeries prepare delicious pizza... after all, walking all night requires energy...
Almost everything is ready, waiting in the wings...
And everyone is waiting... waiting for their clients, dear, loved ones and only with money, as they say in Pattaya - “ No money, No honey«.
Closer to 00:00 o'clock, the most popular beach bars Slinky, Moken, Waddy, open their doors to long-awaited customers.
Note: most of the people in these establishments are European youth (USA, England, Spain, etc.), a few Thais, almost no Russians.
The night has just begun, but for the guy in the photo below it is almost over, with the last of his strength he grabbed the flag and is trying to stay in this world of fun for at least a couple of minutes...
The guy is very good...
For some, just dancing is no longer enough...
Video on Phi Phi Island
Well, perhaps the most exciting and interesting spectacle is boxing. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the bar where the ring is located, I don’t think it will be a problem to find it. The bottom line is this: you can challenge any bar visitor to a duel, and the winner will receive a free drink. There is no payment for the fight. Total 3 rounds, 2 minutes each, you specify the fighting style in advance - it could be Thai boxing, kickboxing, boxing.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t record a video, my memory ran out, but I really wanted to... But I still have a few photos for you of one of the fights. Two healthy guys crushed each other with dignity.
Boxing on Phi Phi
At the end of the fight, apparently the guys had adrenaline going off scale and they didn’t want to stop, as a result there was almost a fight between the two teams... The spectacle was interesting... At that moment it was about 3 o’clock in the morning (as far as my memory serves) both opponents were drunk. I advise you to visit and maybe even take part in such a show, it’s interesting.
Well, that’s probably all, I tried to tell and show the most interesting things that you can see on the island. In the next article I will show you many beautiful photos, tell you about hotels and excursions.

The Phi Phi Islands are a small archipelago of six islands in Southern Thailand, Krabi Province. This group of islands is considered to be the most beautiful in the world, and getting to the islands is not difficult at all. It’s true that getting to the islands is not difficult, but their beauty is fading every year. Technically, the islands are a national park, a marine sanctuary, but hordes of tourists systematically destroy the beaches and reefs year after year.
Island names:
- Phi Phi Don- the largest and only inhabited island. You can’t even imagine how much this island has changed with the advent of civilization: only a narrow strip of sand between the two largest beaches has remained untouched. In tourist brochures it is still called a tropical island, in fact it is a collection of supermarkets, restaurants, tattoo parlors, ATMs, which are as disgusting as the ubiquitous stench of sewage.
- Phi Phi Lee- this is a small island in the south, it became popular after the film “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio - most of the film was filmed on this island. It is uninhabited except for bird nest collectors and Maya Bay guards. But during the day it is crowded with tourists in Maya Bay, which is now called the Beach (“Beach” - after the film). Entrance to the Beach costs 100 baht, which is sometimes included in the price of the day tour, and sometimes not.
- Mai Phai (Bamboo Island)- a small low island north of Phi Phi Don with a beach where you can snorkel if you wish.
- Koh Yung (Mosquito Island) is located north of Koh Phi Phi Don. The island has a large beach, but it is pebbly. Small sandy beaches are only at the foot of the hills. In shallow water there are parts of dead corals and simply a huge number of sea urchins.
- Bida Nok and Bida Nai- two small adjacent limestone islands south of Phi Phi Ly, with steep shores.
Most of the buildings on Phi Phi Don island are located around the village of Ton Sai. The village itself is built in a sandy valley between two hills. However, in other, not so popular and easily accessible places of the island - Long Beach, Laem Thong, there are also resort complexes.
In December 2004, the Phi Phi Islands were destroyed almost to the ground by a tsunami. Everything was restored very quickly, fortunately, limiting the height of the buildings so as not to spoil the stunning view and landscape of the island.
It is worth noting that most local residents profess Islam. Therefore, it is not recommended to walk naked around the island (Buddhists in Thailand, by the way, also do not approve of such liberties!). Tourists love to walk along the streets in swimming trunks or mini-bikinis, but in order not to offend the owners, it is worth throwing on a shirt and putting on shorts. By the way, girls are not prohibited from sunbathing topless on the beaches; locals tolerate it, but do not approve.
Climate
The climate is tropical, so there are only two seasons: the hot season from late January to April and the rainy season from May to December. The temperature all year round is 25-32 degrees, precipitation per year averages 2569 mm. Unlike Europe, for example, the rains here are usually heavy, but not prolonged.
Story
Archaeological research indicates that people settled on the islands a very long time ago, from the prehistoric period. The name of the province of Krabi means “sword” and possibly refers to an ancient legend according to which an ancient sword was found at the site where the city was later built.
The name Phi Phi (pronounced "pii pii" by locals) is taken from Malay and originally sounded like "Pulao Pi a Pi". The name means mangroves, of which there were many on the islands.
Geography
The Phi Phi archipelago is considered one of the most beautiful natural island groups in the world. They are located 50 km southeast of Phuket and are part of the Nopparattaro Koh Phi Phi National Park, a marine reserve. The area of the reserve is 38,800 hectares. There are amazing rocks, karst caves, sandy beaches.
The largest and most famous islands of the archipelago are Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ly. There are two villages on the islands that fall under the jurisdiction of Ao Nang, Muang District, Krabi Province.
The Phi Phi archipelago consists of 6 islands, but two are considered the main ones: Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ly. The islands are located in the Andaman Sea.
Culture
Buddhists, Thais and Chinese, Muslims and even sea gypsies have generously contributed to the culture of Krabi province. But the majority of the rural population professes Islam. The population of Krabi lives in peace and harmony; there is no interreligious strife or disagreement. The villagers in the province speak such a pronounced southern dialect that the Thais themselves have great difficulty understanding them.
In the province of Krabi, all traditions are observed and holidays of Thai Buddhists, Thai Chinese and Thai Muslims are celebrated. Tourists also enjoy the sea gypsy festivals: the annual festive boat launch and motorboat races.
Art
Locals love to do silk-screen printing. But in the shops you can buy a lot of handicrafts, such as items made from pineapple paper.
Tourism
The tourism boom on the Phi Phi Islands and in general in the province of Krabi began relatively recently. Back in the early 90s, enterprising backpackers visited the islands and lived on them for only 50-100 baht a day. But today these islands have become a kind of tourist Mecca for visitors to Thailand. Although it still cannot be compared with Phuket or Koh Samui.
There are still budget options: you can rent a cheap room somewhere in the hills on the outskirts.
Phi Phi is noisy and fun in the evenings; clubs and discos open their doors to those interested. Although cozy and quiet restaurants are also present and have not gone away.
How to get to Phi Phi
By ferry
The busiest and main pier of the islands is Tonsai Pier in Tonsai Bay on Phi Phi Don Island.
From Phuket (and to Phuket): There is a daily ferry (8:30, 11:00, 13:30 and 15:00) via Rassada Pier or Sea Angel Pier. The journey will take one and a half to two hours. The trip costs 250-800 baht. You can buy a one-way ticket for 300-350 baht as part of your rental deal. By the way, one-way tickets to Phuket from the islands at Tonsai Pier cost around 300-350 baht. From Phuket Airport to Rassada Pier you can take a taxi for 500 baht. The drive there is only 30 km, depending on the weather and traffic, the journey takes about 45 minutes.
From Ao Nang: From Ao Nang, the ferry departs every day at 9:30 am via Nopparat Thara Pier. The journey will take 2 hours.
From Rai Lee: From Rai Lee the ferry departs every day at 9:45 am across Riley Bay. The journey takes 1.45. There is no transfer as such: guests are transported to the ferry by motor boat. The situation is the same in Ao Nang.
From Krabi: Every day there is a ferry from here (09:00, 10:30, 13:30, 15:00 and 16:00) via Klong Jilad Pier. The road takes 1.3-1.45. The trip costs 300-500 baht. Last December, at the PP Family office, a ticket cost 400 baht. This company has offices both on the pier and in the city. You can get to the pier from the city by motor boat. The normal passenger ferry no longer departs from the city pier in the city center - only from the new Klong Jilad pier, which was built 3 km from the city. The pier's telephone number is 0 7562 0052. The ticket price usually includes a taxi transfer to the pier. Most likely, the travel agent near the Chao Fa Pier will talk you into additional services and amenities. Don't agree - just buy a ferry ticket. During peak season, ferries operate more frequently and additional routes appear.
From Koh Lanta: The ferry departs from Koh Lanta every day at 08:00 and 13:00 via Saladon Pier. The journey takes an hour. Since January 2015, tickets cost 200-350 baht.
An additional 20 baht is charged from each person at the pier “to clean up the Phi Phi Islands of garbage.” The beaches of the archipelago have not yet become cleaner because of this. Tickets can be purchased online, at the docks, at tour offices or at hotels. Ticket prices depend on the place of purchase. By the way, not all ferries are equally good:
- The only company that will take you to the north of the Phi Phi Islands for free after stopping at Tonsai Pier is Andaman Wave Master. In April 2007, the ferry of this company caught fire and sank; passengers jumped into the sea to escape the fire. Everyone was saved and there were no casualties.
- Sea Angel ferries are very cozy with a selection of drinks and wide-screen TVs. Tickets for these first-class ferries can be purchased online.
- But the ferries of the Chao Co group, especially the smallest "Pichamon IV", are often overcrowded and offer a minimum of amenities and comfort. But since 2010 the group has launched a new mega large ferry.
- The PP Family ferries are larger and more comfortable.
- Ferries of the Phi Phi Cruiser group are fast, take only two hours, but do not set off until all tickets are sold out. But in the mornings they offer free cookies and instant coffee. For an additional fee, the so-called VIP ticket includes dinner at the buffet on Phi Phi Don island and snorkeling on the beach.
Several resorts in Phuket offer day tours with motorboats to the islands, but the prices... from Rawai Beach, a day tour for 6 people on a motorboat costs approximately 15,000 baht. You can also rent a motorboat right on the beach, but you need to make arrangements in advance - most are taken one way. You can also hire a speedboat to travel to the nearby beaches, but this is very expensive.
All inclusive tours
In Patong and throughout Phuket, small agencies sell all-inclusive day tours. In 2011, buying a half-day tour on a speedboat cost 1,400 baht per person (the price in the prospectus was 3,000 baht). The tour price included 6 stops on the islands, lunch on Phi Phi Don, snorkeling and transfer by minibus from the Patong Beach hotel and to the hotel. The tour program is usually not very diverse; you can buy similar tours anywhere in the tourist centers of Phuket. However, you should not buy such tours at the airport or from a taxi driver.
Things to remember:
- On the economy tours that most people buy, there are 25-30 passengers per twin-engine boat and 30-45 passengers per three-engine boat.
- On more expensive tours, there are 18 passengers per twin-engine boat.
- The travel agent is ready to promise anything to get your money. Before purchasing a tour from an agent, you should contact the company’s office and check the current prices... But usually no one does this, and in vain. The speedboat ride is not that safe: be sure to wear a life jacket, and do not take this tour if you are pregnant or have back pain.
Phi Phi Don Island
This is the largest island of the Phi Phi archipelago, it consists of two parts. Local residents founded the village of Ton Sai on the island, all buildings are now concentrated here. Phi Phi Don is a very beautiful island, considered the most beautiful in the world. He paid for his fame: after the invasion of tourists from all over the globe, the beaches lost their freshness and beauty. Fortunately, tourists cannot destroy the landscape.
Observation deck
Entrance to the observation deck is 30 baht, 186 meters above sea level, climb up a fairly steep path for 10-25 minutes (depending on your fitness). The site offers simply stunning views of the entire island, especially during sunset (bring a flashlight with you on the way back). There is a lone kiosk here with drinks (no beer) and snacks. Nice view of the valley between the two hills of the island. There are many large boulders where you can stretch out and bask in the sun while enjoying the view. If you are too lazy to climb or don’t have time, then go to the Banana Bar - this is a bar on the roof of a house, the view from here is really good. The best part is that you can enjoy this view while sipping a delicious cocktail.
Monkey Beach
The beach can be reached on foot, by rowing, or by renting a boat. Be careful: monkeys are not always good-natured. Some tourists have already been bitten by monkeys and had to be injected for rabies, which is unpleasant. Note: it is better not to feed wild animals!
Fireshow
At night, the island often hosts fire shows for tourists, in a variety of places: at the Apache Bar, Carlito's, Hippie's, Krpe Diem, Ze Taya and the Millie Sunflower Bar in Lodalum.
Memorial to Tsunami Victims
This is a garden near Millie Sunflower's bar, it is quiet and peaceful, and is dedicated to the victims of the recent tragedy.
Yao Beach
Yao Beach is located south of Ton Sai, it is very beautiful here, you can scuba dive or snorkel and take pictures. There are a lot of people here, sometimes even a lot, many believe that overdeveloped amenities and recreational facilities in the vicinity of the beach have spoiled it. You can get to the beach on foot or by boat.
Lanti Beach
The beach is next to Yao Beach. In general, they are very similar: coral reefs and natural beauty. You can get there on foot.
Hin Khao Beach
This is a very quiet beach, you can only get to it on foot - maybe that’s why it’s so calm and quiet here.
Ton Sai Bay
Ton Sai Bay should not be confused with Ton Sai Bay, which is next to Ao Nang. Here is the center of the whole party: restaurants, bars, hotels and guest houses. Many people stay here - there are all the amenities here. Although this is not the most beautiful place in the Phi Phi Islands, it is still very, very beautiful.
Laem Tong
The beach is located in the north of the island, it is quiet and stunningly beautiful. Renting housing here is extremely expensive, a place for wealthy tourists.
Phi Phi Lee Island
The second of the large islands of the archipelago, very beautiful - but not inhabited, because these are protected areas of the national park.
Faya Naak Cave
This cave contains prehistoric paintings as well as edible swiftlet nests.
Maya Bay
this is probably the most beautiful beach of the Phi Phi Islands, which became known to the whole world after the release of the film “The Beach” with DiCaprio in 1998. There are no more corals in that place, and no fish either. But you can jump into the water from a height of 20 meters from a cliff on the beach. To get to the beach, you can hire a motor boat: 1,500 baht and it’s at your disposal for half a day. It is better to arrive at the beach before 08:00 in the morning, then it is still quiet and deserted. From 09:00 the beach is crowded with tourists and motor boats from all over Phuket. Also, when visiting Maya Beach, you should consider the time of year. From October to May during the peak season there will be people here like in Disneyland. At other times of the year it’s more free.
Note: At the request of the management, the rangers charge an entrance fee of 100 baht per person. But the police will only charge you an entry fee if you show up in a motorboat. It is better to go at noon (around 15:00): when leaving Maya Beach you will enjoy the sunset (the sunset is not visible on the beach).
Hi all!
Phi-phi as the Russians call it or pi-pi in the correct way - it doesn’t matter, it’s a beautiful island, where from morning to morning there is some kind of movement in the center and such a quiet paradise if you go deeper. Here is a completely different Thailand, there are no bikes and cars, pristine nature is still preserved here, there are narrow streets and vast jungles, here a monkey can come to you for breakfast, and in the evening sitting on the beach, listening to loud music echoing the sound of the surf, you You will understand that this is worth living for!
So, let's go)
1. Buy ferry tickets. Where? Any place where you are offered excursions (of course not from tour operators, I generally advise you never listen to them). You buy round-trip tickets, but your return ticket has an open date, that is, you can return whenever you want! Plus, these tickets include transfer from your hotel to the ferry and back. We bought tickets in Phuket Town - there is the lowest price, only 550 baht per person in both directions. If you don’t have the opportunity to get to the center, then you will buy tickets a little more expensive, I saw prices of 700-800 baht, but all the same, all the costs in the end will be much less than if you bought an excursion. Plus you are taken on a huge three-decker ship, you can sunbathe on the roof
or sit under the air conditioning inside, everyone has their own place
.Yes, it sails longer than speed boats on excursions, but why do we need to rush? The first time we went on an excursion on a boat, there were waves, we were so thrown into them, everyone was screaming, someone was throwing up, it was scary, all this really spoiled the idea of the whole excursion, because on a one-day trip you always go somewhere... then you float (jump on the waves). A big ship won’t be abandoned like that. In general, more about tickets. If you still decide to get to Phuket Town, then here is a link to Google maps, where we got tickets, to the left of the intersection
2. We book a hotel. It took me two days) I’ll explain why: we were traveling with a child, so it was important for me that it was quiet at night, there were no cockroaches, the accommodation should not be on a steep mountain (and it’s very there are a lot of hotels like this), but at the same time, so that everything is nearby. Here's another advantage of traveling on your own - you choose the accommodation that suits your needs. Although I personally had to work hard with this)) First you need to understand what you want. On Phi Phi, the three most popular beaches and places to stay are:
Beach and Tonsai area - in the middle there is a pier, all ships and boats arrive here. Popular, dirty, there are noisy and quiet places.
Loh Dalum Beach is the most popular beach. A party place at night, very loud music, a lot of people, the further you are from this beach, the quieter it is, I advise you to look on the map.
Long Beach is a very beautiful and clean beach. It is considered one of the best. Housing is more expensive than anywhere else. It is better to choose it if you are not going to a party at all. You can reach it on foot through the jungle (30 minutes), but this is only for the sake of walking and interest, I don’t think you can get there at night. There are also long tails (boats) from the center, it costs only 100 baht, 7 minutes and you’re there, but at night they either don’t run or charge a high price (this means that if you still want to go to a party)
Initially, we wanted to live there, there are good hotels, everything is clean and civilized, there is a good sea. But we really wanted to see everything, climb up to the observation deck and go, at least not to a party, but to a fire show on the shore and drink local cocktails - that’s definitely . In Lo Dalam itself, as I already wrote, there is a show and a disco until the morning, so we had only one option left - to deal with the Tonsai area. There are a lot of hotels on the mountain, of course there are steps, but the climbs are very steep, but this is where monkeys can come to visit you. Accommodation there is usually not expensive. Therefore, if you are athletic young people without children, then why not. We chose a hotel far from the center to eat, we had to walk about 10 minutes at a leisurely pace to buy something, but it was exactly what I wanted, without mountains, but also almost in the jungle, very quiet, clean, air conditioning, rooms with tightly closed doors and windows (there are houses with cracks, so all sorts of insects can come to visit you). Otherwise, we are not picky and never look for luxury apartments) Another important point - do not take housing next to a passing path, even if there is a quiet area, cheerful drunken comrades will return in the morning and perhaps walk along this very road)
In general, if you have similar requirements as ours, I recommend the View Garden Resort hotel. We booked through agoda (by the way, I read that in Asia it is best to book hotels through this service, but I still always compare with everyone)
You can easily find the hotel upon arrival, but we didn’t want to waste time on this.
3. Of course, you are interested in the excursion program, which is included in the excursion from Phuket! The famous Maya Bay (where the film with DiCaprio “The Beach” was filmed), Monkey Island, Pele Bay and everything else you can also purchase on the spot, all these excursions are available, one excursion includes everything, for a low cost (400 baht saw the cheapest option is a complex of all excursions). Excursion kiosks are there at every step. This time we did not take these excursions, since we had already been everywhere, we just wanted to go to Maya Bay again, but there is no separate excursion there, but you can rent a boat for 1,500 baht. We didn’t do this because after a night of cocktails we overslept) But we wanted to go in the morning, since then there are a lot of tourists there. Therefore, even two days there may not be enough for you if you want to see everything . Already knowing everything, now I would go longer.
In general, these are the most important points, without which your excursion will not take place.
And here is our holiday routine on Phi Phi Island:
As soon as we arrived, we immediately went to eat, then we found and checked into a hotel and immediately went on foot to Long Beach. Just on foot, because this is interesting to us. Be prepared that the flat road ends almost immediately and you will have to climb, jump, climb and not stumble) But you can take a boat from the pier for 100 baht, as I already said.
We went swimming and sunbathed. By the way, there were quite a few people there. But it was still calm and nice.
Opposite this beach you can see the same Maya Bay
The view is slightly spoiled by the huge number of boats that could have been parked further away. Not far from them there are boat taxi drivers who will take you back to Ton Sai.
Then we changed clothes and got ready to go up to the lookout. This is not an easy path, 2.5 km almost always uphill, but our 5-year-old son managed it, I think it’s worth it, the way back from the mountain is much faster =)
Go in the late afternoon and watch the sunset there, but be prepared for a huge number of people. At dawn there will probably be much less people. But no one bothers anyone, everyone is glad that they finally got there, you have an amazing view of the whole island and in the center is that very isthmus, where on one side there is a pier, in the center you walk and eat, and on the other side there is the party beach of Lo Dalam .
Higher than all the trees
This is such happiness in the eyes, real)) My favorite photo
We met the sunset and ran down until it got completely dark. Next we look for Lo Dalam beach. It’s not difficult to look for something on the island, there are signs everywhere. There are a lot of cafes on the beach, each with a fire show starting at 21.00. To sit and watch show, you need to buy a cocktail at this bar. Of course, you can buy it somewhere else and then stand next to it. But firstly, by the beginning of the show there are already a lot of people and you may not be able to see everything very well, and secondly, the cocktail was very different in both taste and condition than what they poured us earlier in some shop. It was very tasty and really alcoholic, and not diluted with water and a lot of ice. I really liked the show, do not sit in the front rows, as from time to time burning sticks fly out of the hands of the Thais, but in fact no one was hurt. And vice versa if you want to become a participant in the show , sit down closer, they take people to them from the crowd. We came to the very first Slinky bar and stayed there, there was no one yet, but we sat further away
Loud music, crazy Thais, a delicious cocktail and the sound of the sea, you can order a hookah, then you will be given a separate table for the company, this whole atmosphere of eternal holiday and carefree, something that we all sometimes miss so much. But there really is a holiday every day, young people (a lot of Poles) come and hang out there for weeks. It doesn’t matter at all who you are, what you wear, or what nationality you are, as my friend, who also managed to go to a disco there, put it - all brothers and sisters =)) Of course, we didn’t stay at the disco, although we wanted to. And we didn’t watch the show to the end, and at the end, judging by the video, the heat began. But we went towards the house, since we are parents)) In the evening they sell buckets everywhere!! with a cocktail (glasses at the bar)
Belongs to the province of Krabi. They are located in the Andaman Sea between Phuket, Koh Lanta and the mainland of Krabi.
The Phi Phi island group includes two relatively large islands (Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley), as well as two small islands (Bamboo Island and Mosqito Island), plus a couple of very tiny rocks (Ko Bida Nai, Ko Bida Nok ) which are known to be amazing diving sites.
The largest and only permanently inhabited island is Phi Phi Don. At the height of the season, this piece of land is visited by about 5,000 people a day, despite its rather modest size - 28 km², most of which is occupied by impenetrable mountains and jungle. We spent 3 days on Phi Phi Don. We also managed to visit the second largest island - Phi Phi Ley. It is famous for Maya Bay, where the movie “The Beach” with the famous actor was filmed, but also for other remarkable places, which I will write about next time.
We really liked the little islands too! Bamboo Island reminded us of Poda Island, which is located near Ao Nang, but which we have not written about yet. 🙂 Snow-white sand, incredibly clear water, wide beaches and a minimum number of tourists - this is all about the Bamboo Island in the Andaman Sea. As for Mosquito Island, it was shown to us only from the side of the boat. But first things first…
Map of Phi Phi Don - main village (good detail)
We arrived in Phi Phi Don on a large ship that brought us from Koh Lanta for only 250 baht.
Offtopic: On Lanta we rented a guesthouse run by a transvestite. I have never experienced any positive emotions at the thought of communicating with transvestites, but he turned out to be professional and a very pleasant person. 🙂 Firstly, he does his job very well, is always ready to help, suggest something, and is always polite and courteous. Secondly, every day he politely offered us some kind of entertainment. It is clear that this is his bread, but everything that he was ready to provide us with (car rental, excursions, kayaking, tickets to Phi Phi...) - all this was offered to us at the lowest prices that we could not find in other places. For example, we rented a small Honda Brio car with an automatic transmission from him for only 1,000 baht, while in neighboring offices we were offered the same car for 200 baht more. Even in Ao Nang we couldn’t find a car with an automatic transmission at that price, although the competition there is much higher! If anything, the name of the guest house located on Long Beach on Lanta is Mook Guesthouse. I didn’t remember the ladyboy’s manager’s name, but he’s a good person, and his prices for bungalows are excellent! 😉 And now - closer to the topic...
Phi Phi people fall in love at first sight. These mountains, this unique color of the sea, the mysterious neighboring islands beckoning in the distance...
500 meters from the pier to the east along the promenade Ton Sai Bay - Phi Phi Don
I once heard how these islands were called the Maldives for the poor, arguing that the nature there is very beautiful, but at the same time you can buy a tour to Phi Phi much cheaper than a tour to the Maldives, and all the entertainment on Phi Phi costs order of magnitude cheaper than the Maldives. Quite a strange definition, of course, but everyone has the right to their opinion.
And some people claim that everything is cheap on Phi Phi, while others write that prices on these islands are unreasonably high, but at the same time, in essence, there is nothing to catch there, there is nothing interesting at all... The question arises - who to believe? The answer is simple - everyone sees what they want to see. 🙂 The glass is half empty and half full... And... No one is perfect!
I will write briefly about the main island of Phi Phi Don and its atmosphere. I don’t claim laurels of last resort, but at least you will know what to expect from this place, and certainly what not to expect.
Features of Phi Phi Don Island
What you definitely shouldn’t expect from this popular and world-famous resort is peace and tranquility (although on Phi Phi Don there are a couple of quiet remote beaches, which for 100-150 baht you can take a taxi boat, or walk along on land through high mountains, or at low tide over the sea and rocks - but this is not about them).
If you find accommodation near the pier at Tonsai Bay or (God forbid) at the disco Loh Dalum Bay, that is, in the very central place of the island, then you can forget about a secluded vacation. Next, I will write point by point so that no one has any illusions about Phi Phi Don:
1. About housing on Phi Phi Don
One of the housing search options we always check first is AIRBNB. By the way, using our link, you can get a discount!
There is no or almost no long-term housing on Phi Phi - I’ll say right away. 🙂 But it’s not needed there - it seems to me that few people spend more than a week there. Prices for small hotel rooms (guesthouses) near the pier are usually 1,500-2,000 baht. Your room will have a bed, air conditioning, toilet and hot shower, and maybe even some nice mountain views. You shouldn't expect anything special for the money on Phi Phi, especially near the pier. But if you walk only 5-7 minutes from this very pier a little deeper into the island, towards the observation deck, you will find out that exactly the same rooms are rented for less than 1,000 baht, and rooms without air conditioning start at 500 baht. At the same time, it is far from a fact that the conditions in those guesthouses are very different for the worse from the conditions in more expensive mini-hotels. It's all about the location - if you want to live closer to the party scene, the pier with taxi boats, and have a more beautiful view from the window, pay more.
Our guesthouse on Phi Phi - a room for 600 baht with all amenities, a fan and a large balconyThe view from the balcony is not very resort-like, I agree!)
2. About loud parties on the beach
Next, it’s worth writing about the parties - they almost never end in Phi Phi Don! If the discos on Phi Phi close at 2-3 a.m., then at least until dawn, very drunk young people continue to walk through the cramped streets with restaurants and travel agency offices closed at night, accompanied by loud songs, screams, howls, etc. It’s paradoxical that by settling away from party places, you can save on housing and also enjoy relative silence, because only people who plan to drink every day, have fun and dance until they drop can live near disco bars. 🙂
3. About food on Phi Phi
Before our trip to Phi Phi, we heard from other winter travelers that vacationing on these islands is very expensive. We figured that we could try to save on housing, but there is a minimum limit below which you can only spend the night on the beach with your things. 🙂 Therefore, we decided to save a little on groceries by taking a kettle and some food items with us (yes, we are not millionaires yet))).
In fact, I can say that this is far from necessary, and it all depends on your travel budget, but thanks to this we were able to save enough money that there is plenty to spend on Phi Phi... And yet, I would like to emphasize that finding inexpensive food Anyone can go to Phi Phi if they have the desire! For example, despite the unrealistically inflated prices for fruits, there are cheap fresh fruits here. Despite the fact that water even at 7/11 costs twice as much as in similar stores on the mainland, you can buy cheaper water in an opaque bottle for 10 baht per liter - it is available in almost every store, and its price is fixed. Despite the fact that prices in some cafes by the sea start from three digits for the most basic dishes, there are simple cafes with Thai food for 50-60 baht, as well as pizza for 80 baht - and we have never seen such a price for pizza Samui, not in Ao Nang - nowhere in Thailand... And this pizza is quite tasty!
In general, it is quite possible to eat inexpensively in Phi Phi, and this is not considered shameful here - people of different nationalities sit in cheap cafes.
In front of our eyes, some not very sober European did not want to go to the paid toilet for 10 baht, because it seemed like he really had no money!
There are very few tourists from Ukraine and Russia on Phi Phi Don. I don’t know whether this is an accident or not, but among the vacationers there was no notice of any kind of show-off characteristic of some segments of our population... There are no majors, or guys with huge gold chains, or just people who ostentatiously throw money around. Perhaps, again, everyone sees what they want. But it seemed to me that almost everyone here is either backpackers, or young people with low and middle incomes who don’t want to overpay for anything, or “package travelers” - tourists who came on package trips to Phuket, Ao Nang or somewhere else, and From there we took a one-day tour to Phi Phi, and their budget is also limited.
In general, all this creates a very friendly atmosphere! Everyone smiles at each other and enjoys their vacation.
One of the cheapest eateries on Phi Phi with Pad Thai for 50 baht and reviews on the wall. There is even the word “TAGI-I-IL!!!” Who would doubt that!)))
I’m not kidding about Tagil - see for yourself))
4. About infrastructure and entertainment on Phi Phi Don
On the island of Phi Phi Don there is not a single car and not a single road on which he could drive - all the streets are very narrow... We saw several police motorbikes, and in addition to the guardians of the law, 99.999% of people on the island move on foot or on bicycles. By the way, on the second day bicycles start to get a little annoying, because sometimes they rush around quickly, honk at you, and interfere with your peaceful walk and rest. Moreover, what is most annoying is that the cyclists themselves ride as they please, talk on the phone, brake loudly with their shoes, write text messages on the go, shout at someone, smoke, eat, listen to music on headphones, but at the same time they believe that everyone should have their back turned smell and immediately make way. 🙂
In general, there are bicycle rentals on Phi Phi Don, but you won’t really need it - getting around the island is much easier and safer on foot! The roads and distances are not suitable for a bicycle. Handcarts for moving goods are also popular among the local trading population.
The main modes of transport on Phi Phi Don are bicycle and cart.
Four-wheeled transport on Phi Phi Don is a rare guest
On Phi Phi Don there is a police station, two small hospitals (Phi Phi Hospital and Siam International Clinic), a bank with currency exchange, many ATMs, payphones, a post office, a small market, a sea of shops, food stalls, kiosks with clothes, souvenirs and all sorts of small things, hotels. There is also a school and a mosque available, if necessary. 😉
Muai Thai is a ring for Thai boxing on Phi Phi Don... Anyone who wants to kamikaze can enter the ring against a professional Thai boxer for a bucket of alcohol))))
As for entertainment, in the village itself you can watch Thai boxing, go to a 6D cinema session, and go up to the Phi Phi Viewpoint, famous from photos on the Internet.
Dozens of travel agencies, tattoo parlors and diving schools are at your disposal. Plus hundreds of eateries, cafes and restaurants, as well as several disco clubs, the most important of which are located on the very loud Loh Dalum Bay beach, which I wrote about above, that I would try not to settle near it.
Popular disco clubs are called Slinky Beach Bar and Woody Beach Bar. In general, entertainment in the main village of Phi Phi Don comes down to themes - buy souvenirs, eat, drink, dance, go to bed or fall face down in a salad. 🙂
5. Phi Phi Don beaches
The Andaman Sea is very beautiful, and on the Phi Phi Islands it is impossible not to notice this, but, unfortunately, on Phi Phi Don the swimmers of the sea are greatly influenced by the ebb and flow of the tides. At low tide the water goes very far on Lo Dalum Bay and the sea becomes very shallow on Tonsai Bay so that swimming becomes almost impossible. True, there are few places where swimming is allowed on Tonsai - there are boats and speedboats everywhere. Disco Loh Dalum Bay on Phi Phi at low tide Two small beaches east of Tonsai Bay, including Laem Hin. At high tide it’s great here, but at low tide it’s knee-deep, as in the photo...
We didn’t really like Lo Dalum Bay even during high water levels, because at night many people here, excuse the details, pee in the sea. After all, discos are next to paid and smelly toilets, so perhaps this affects the condition of the beach... Drunk Europeans also throw garbage anywhere (), but in the morning the beach is always clean and tidy, so the organizers of discos have something to praise for...
You can ideally swim at high tide if you move away from the Tonsai pier in an easterly direction and walk for about 30 minutes. You can also take a taxi boat and go to Long Beach. In fact, this is probably the best option for swimming on Phi Phi Don and within easy reach of the center. But it’s even better to go to the neighboring islands...
