We will talk about the most famous Dominican beach - Macau. What is it, where is it located and what to do there? All this is further in the article!
Wild Macau Beach
The Dominican Republic is an island, and therefore there are only beaches, beaches and more beaches around. Some of them are wild, others are private, ennobled. However, they all have one thing in common - a beautiful warm sea and an atmosphere of good mood.
Conventionally, all the beaches of the island of Haiti can be divided into 2 groups, those that are washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and those that are located in the Caribbean Sea. In this article we will talk about the most famous beach, which is included in the first group - Macau.
On the one hand, this is a wild place, and on the other, it is completely homely and cozy. Many surfers come here with the desire to catch the next wave and spend a considerable part of their lives on this beach. Photographers return again and again to get new, beautiful shots and hone their skills. In my opinion, the word “wild” sounds more like a noun or a proper name and, in no case, like an adjective. I want to say only one thing, this is a truly unique place with which many memories are associated with any person who has visited it.
Where is Macau Beach?
Let's start from the beginning... The beach is located 15 km from the resort town of Bavaro. Recently, new high-quality roads were built on the island. It was a lucky coincidence that they passed right near the most interesting places, which included Macau Beach. If the path starts from Bavaro, then you can reach it quickly and comfortably, spending about 15-30 minutes of time, moving along highway 105. Just before the intersection of the Uvero Alto highway and highway 105, you need to turn right and we are almost there . There is no public transport, but a local taxi (motoconchi) or private transfer will take you there safely.

Photo shoot on Macau beach
For many photographers, this beach has become the hallmark of their portfolio. Both regular photo shoots and weddings are held here. Macau is considered wild, and therefore no permit is required. There are usually few people on the beach, so it has become quite popular in the photography industry. If you are staying at a hotel in the Punta Cana - Bavaro area and do not want to spend a lot of time on long journeys to remote photo shoot locations, then this option is for you!

Macau, of course, is not a beach tourist destination, but there are beaches here, which, in general, is logical, because all around is the South China Sea. Local beaches, in fact, are intended for the local population, who really like to relax here. Despite the presence at the Galaxy Macau Hotel excellent water complex, we still didn’t mind swimming in the real sea.
When preparing a trip to Macau, it turned out that there are several beaches here, but the most popular ones are located in the southern part of the island of Coloane ( I already mentioned that it is connected with the neighboring island of Taipa into one large island of Cotai) two beaches Cheoc Van And Hac Sa. There is a lot of public transport here, and the closest stop to our hotel is a few minutes' walk away, if you exit through the Crystal Lobby and cross the highway at the pedestrian crossing, let me remind you that traffic here is on the left ( and the next stop is right opposite The Venetian, you just need to cross the highway via an overpass).
At the stops there are signs indicating routes and fares, so you can figure it out without any problems. We could get there by buses 25, 26A, these routes go to the final one - Hak Sa beach, and along the way they make a stop at Cheok Wan beach, so if you wish, you can easily visit them in turn. The traffic schedule, route maps and fares can be found here http://www.dsat.gov.mo/bus/en/bus_service.aspx ( By the way, the fare depends on where the passenger boards, and not on the destination).
Buses run frequently, however, we made a “tactical miscalculation” by deciding to go to the beach on Saturday at lunchtime... Quite a lot of necessary buses passed us, but they didn’t stop... It’s just that, unlike our public transport drivers, here the driver can easily pass the stop (if no one needs to get off) when the bus is full ( although the concept of “bus fullness” in Macau and in Russia is very different, and our drivers would brake at stops without hesitation, ramming everyone into the cabin...)
After standing for half an hour and waving at passing buses, we decided to try again the next day. And so, on Sunday morning we finally boarded the right bus. Locals pay for travel with a special card, but tourists hardly need to bother buying one, since they hardly use public transport; free shuttle buses are enough ( one important point: Hong Kong Octopus is not valid in Macau , don't even try). Well, if you decide to take a ride out of town, then have some change ready for the fare, as the driver won’t give you change! On the bus next to the driver there is a stand with a metal box, you throw coins into the slot on the lid, and on the driver’s side the box has a glass wall, the coins lie flat next to each other, the driver sees at a glance how much you threw, then presses the lever and the coins fall into the receiver below.
By the way, for some reason in Macau they don’t accept a coin like this in denomination of 10 Hong Kong dollars. I could not find out the reason; all other coins and banknotes of Hong Kong are accepted here with a bang. And in Hong Kong itself, this coin does not create any problems.
The bus to the beach goes along a rather picturesque route, I don’t remember exactly the travel time, it seemed no more than half an hour. At the final stop there are shops with various bathing accessories. (swimming trunks, swimsuits, glasses, inflatable rings, etc.), the beach is equipped with showers, toilets, changing rooms, there is a green park and a camping area along the beach, and at the end of the park there is a large picnic area.
Showers and changing rooms
Pleasant shady alley along the beach
Behind the fence is a camping area. You pay the rent and set up a tent. A very common practice in countries and cities with high population densities.
Large picnic area with stationary barbecues. A very popular place among Macau residents, for example, a large group of schoolchildren in three photographs above began to relax here in full force.
The Hak Sa beach itself is described in many guidebooks as an excellent place for swimming and I quote: “ with a warm crystal clear sea and amazing black volcanic sand“... The sea may be warm, but the sand is not black at all, although once it probably was, but over time it mixed with the ordinary sand brought here and lost its original color. The transparency of the water certainly cannot be called “crystal” ( well, or is it some kind of special cloudy crystal). I would like to say separately about the “cleanliness of the sea”, because we never expected to see so much garbage both on the beach and in the water! During our Hong Kong-Macao trip, only one beach could amaze with its unsanitary conditions more than Hak Sa - on the island of Cheung Chau in Hong Kong...
The result of the vacation is that all this garbage ends up on the beach, and garbage from vacationers directly on the sand is added to it.
But if they monitored the cleanliness here, it would be a really good beach...
It is quite possible that the littering of the beach is the result of a Saturday weekend, when locals came here in countless numbers, and maybe after the weekend they thoroughly clean up here, and, again, it may be that on weekdays the beach is quite clean... But this theory is repeated We didn’t want to check it out during the trip. Also, after what I saw, I didn’t want to go to another local beach - Cheok Wan, since it is located very close, it was logical to predict in advance its equally littered state. And we were not mistaken... Walking along the beautiful coastal path on our next visit, we immediately noticed that the sea in the area of Cheok Wan beach was much dirtier, and this is clearly visible even on the holographic maps. So one thing can be said about a beach holiday in Macau - for us it is not here. By the way, we didn’t see a single aborigine swimming; they walk along the sand or along the embankment, go sailing, but you certainly won’t find anyone joyfully splashing in the sea waves.
Despite the fact that swimming in " warm crystal clear sea on a black sand beach“We didn’t succeed, we didn’t experience any particular upset, and were once again glad to have our own “micro-sea” in our Galaxy hotel.
For the rest of the day we decided to walk around the old town. Having safely reached the center by shuttle bus, we realized that this was a rash decision. Macau on a Sunday is completely different from Macau on a weekday. Unrealistically gigantic crowds of tourists, there’s literally nowhere for an apple to fall! But, since we arrived, we went for a walk. With great difficulty we filtered through Senate Square to the ruins of the cathedral, rested a little and headed into the city alleys. This was the right decision! No tourists, silence, local flavor in all its glory, just great!
Senate Square is simply teeming with tourists...
The alley from the square to the ruins of the cathedral is so densely packed that the speed of movement in it is slower than the speed of a snail. A small gap at the beginning of the alley is just a “temptation”, then there is just a wall of people!
Near the ruins of the cathedral, it was with great difficulty that we found a place on the curb to sit down and rest.
And in the alleys there is no one, peace and quiet!
You can even come across benches in a secluded shady place, which is very rare for the city.
By the way, in the summer it is very hot in Macau, be sure to take water with you and keep in mind that for some reason there are incredibly few benches in the city, so it will be difficult to sit comfortably and relax. Even those benches that were there on our first visit, for example near the dancing fountains of the Wynn casino, were removed for some reason...
Towards evening, after the interesting alleys of Macau, we decided to walk along Fisherman's Wharf embankment. On the way, we walked past the Wynn casino, where we once again enjoyed watching the short show “The Dragon of Fortune” and, without waiting for the next performance “Prosperity tree ", moved on.
Wynn Casino
Great short introduction to The Dragon of Fortune
Again, past Grand Lisboa... nothing, and we’ll definitely come here someday
What a strange silhouette of the pedestrian on the sign
I have already talked about Fisherman's Wharf in some detail, so here are just a couple of photos
Unfortunately, there was some kind of construction going on on a significant part of the embankment, so we didn’t get the expected impressions, but we still had a nice stroll.
It’s good that we’ve already visited the center of Macau. And most importantly, the photographs show what Macau can be like without the crowds of people!
This time we again did not visit many interesting places in Macau: the Guia lighthouse, the Macau Giant Panda Pavilion, the “Prosperity tree” show at the Wynn casino, there is also an aquarium with a thousand jellyfish, we did not walk through many very famous casinos with beautiful interiors and gorgeous shows, we didn’t walk through the old quarters of Taipa... So we’ll be back again!
The beaches of Punta Cana are famous all over the world. Thousands of tourists come to the Dominican Republic mainly to relax on these extraordinarily beautiful strips of sand. The beaches of Punta Cana are very important for tourism in the Dominican Republic, so they are protected by the government, the regional administration, hotels and local residents.
Why are Punta Cana's beaches considered some of the most impressive on the planet? Imagine miles of beautiful white sand gently lapped by the clear turquoise waters of the ocean. It's a beautiful picture, isn't it?
Depending on the location of the beach, the waves on it can be small or even quite high. Many of Punta Cana's beaches are dotted with resort hotels that have turned them into major tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic. Most hotels in Punta Cana offer an all-inclusive formula, which gives guests the opportunity to enjoy free water sports and a variety of delicious food and drinks.
The region of Punta Cana, which is located in the province of La Altagracia, is a beautiful place with stunning scenery, but mainly the area is well known for its beaches and excellent hotels to suit all tastes. The beaches of Punta Cana cover about 50 kilometers of coastline and have light and clean sand, which many other areas of the Dominican Republic cannot boast of.
What beaches are there in Punta Cana?
In Punta Cana, it is customary to distinguish 8 main beach sectors. These beaches are located from north to south in the following order: Uvero Alto, Macau, Arena Gorda, El Cortecito, Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro, Cabo Engano and Punta Cana. The closer to the south the beach is, the calmer the waters wash it. So if you are planning to relax in a hotel on Uvero Alto or Arena Gorda beach, you should be prepared for strong waves.
Uvero Alto Beach
This beach is the northernmost in the Punta Cana area. The water here is very clear and the sand is very soft. However, the sand on Uvero Alto Beach is slightly darker than the sand on the more southern beaches of Punta Cana. It is worth noting that this beach is one of the best places for surfing. In any case, Uvero Alto is a great place for water sports. Hotels that are located on this beach include Zoetry, Sivory, Excellence, Sirenis and Dreams Punta Cana.
Macau Beach
It also offers some pretty big waves. That's why the surf camp is located here. You won't find a better place in Punta Cana to learn to surf. However, Macau is not only famous for its waves - this beach offers clear water, palm trees hanging over the water and small rocks. In addition, Macau is a favorite destination for tourists who want to get married or have a photo shoot in the Dominican Republic.
There are no hotels in Macau, so it has retained its natural state.
Arena Gorda Beach
The main feature is its extremely wide strip of white sand, which provides ample space for everyone to relax by the ocean.
It is worth remembering that the waves at Arena Gorda are quite strong. Moreover, there have already been cases of injury due to these waves.
On Arena Gorda Beach you can find hotels such as the Hard Rock Hotel, Barcelo Punta Cana and the Majestic, Grand Bahia and Riu hotels.
El Cortecito Beach
El Cortecito is one of the most popular in Punta Cana. Near it you will find several shops and seafood restaurants. The sand here is slightly whiter than on the northern beaches, and the water is clearer. Usually, even tourists who have visited Punta Cana several times do not know about the existence of this beach, since they believe that Arena Gorda turns into Bavaro Beach. In fact, El Cortecito is located between these beaches.
On El Cortecito you can find hotels in the Gran Palladium and Punta Cana Princess complexes, as well as the Vista Sol and Barcelo Dominican Beach hotels.
Bavaro Beach
This is one of the most visited beaches in the Punta Cana area. The very white sand and clear water of this beach are simply mesmerizing. About 800 meters from the shore there is an impressive coral reef that forms a barrier protecting Bavaro from strong waves. So surf lovers should ignore this place.
If you're looking for paradise on earth, Bavaro Beach in Punta Cana will take you there. Located in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic, Bavaro is known as an ideal destination for all those who want to enjoy one of the best beaches in the country, which combines a long stretch of white sand, very clear waters and tall coconut palms.
Where is Bavaro Beach?
Many people make the mistake of thinking that the Punta Cana and Bavaro areas are the same. This is not entirely true, since Bavaro is part of the Punta Cana resort area, which is located north of Punta Cana. In addition, many people are mistaken in believing that Bavaro Beach stretches all the way to Macau. In fact, Bavaro stretches from Cabeza de Toro beach in the south to El Cortecito in the north.
Although many tourists believe that Bavaro is at least 10 km long, in fact this beach is about 4 km long, 2 km of which is in the Barcelo Bavaro hotel complex.
How to get to Bavaro beach?
If you need to get there from Punta Cana airport, you can take a taxi (but many tourists from Russia are transported to hotels by tour operator buses). The journey to Bavaro takes approximately 30 minutes.
Guests at hotels on El Cortecito Beach and Arena Gorda Beach can walk along the oceanfront to Bavaro Beach.
Some of the hotels that are located on Bavaro include: Melia Caribe Tropical, Paradisus Palma Real and the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe and Barcelo Bavaro Beach hotels, which are very popular among Russian tourists.
Cabeza de Toro Beach
This beach is also spectacular, although it is less popular than the previously mentioned Punta Cana beaches. It is very calm, with a lot of palm trees. Because Cabeza de Toro has a gentle entrance into the ocean, it is considered one of the best places for children in Punta Cana.
Some of the hotels that are located on Cabeza de Toro Beach include Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana, Be Live Grand Punta Cana and the Catalonia Complex Hotels.
Cabo Engano Beach
This is probably the least known beach in Punta Cana among tourists. Cabo Engano Beach can only be reached by a dirt road. There are no hotels in the area of this beach, so here you can find a very calm environment, perfect for relaxation.
Punta Cana Beach
Punta Cana Beach is located south of Cabo Engano and is considered one of the most beautiful places to relax, where blue waters lap a strip of white sand.
Some of the hotels here include Club Med and Punta Cana Resort and Club.
The beaches of Punta Cana definitely offer all the conditions needed for a good holiday. The weather here is mostly sunny and warm. Combine this with crystal clear waters, white sand and a variety of hotels, and they are certainly worth your attention.
