The Palm Islands in Dubai are called the eighth wonder of the world. This is the second structure built by man that can be seen from space. The first, as we know, is the Great Wall of China.
The Palm Islands can be seen even from space!
The Palm Islands were created by the authorities of the United Arab Emirates precisely to attract tourists, as well as to expand their territory through the waters of the Persian Gulf. Both were brought to life brilliantly.
What to see
The archipelago consists of three artificial islands, each of which is a palm tree: the largest is Palm Deira, the other two - Palm Jumeirah and Palm Jebel Ali - are slightly smaller.
On the coast of Dubai there is another magnificent artificial structure - the “World” archipelago, next to which the construction of the “Universe” archipelago is planned.
If you pick on the terminology, then the Palm Islands should be called peninsulas, because they are connected to the mainland by a coastline - a trunk. It is no coincidence that the islands are made up of date palms, a particularly revered plant in Islam. Also in the traditions of this religion, the crown of each of the Palm Islands was a crescent moon.
To protect against water, the Palm Islands are surrounded by barrier reefs. And the builders did not approach them formally. For example, quotes from the poems of Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the current Sheikh of Dubai, are carved on the reefs of the Palm Jebel Ali.
The Palm Islands are built from sand mined from the coast of Dubai.
All Palm Islands are built from sand mined from the coast of Dubai. Seven million cubic meters of sand were used to create the Palm Jumeirah breakwater, which stretches for 11 km. And it is the smallest of the three islands. A total of 1,400 villas, 32 hotels should appear on Palm Jumeirah, and the beaches will stretch here for 78 km.
The main attraction of Jumeirah should be the Atlantics complex; the owners promise that it will be a tourist dream come true.
Palm Jebel Ali Island is built in a more exotic style. There will be more than a thousand Polynesian-style bungalows and more than two thousand villas. Dubai authorities plan that by 2020, about 1.7 million people will live on this island. Particular attention will be paid to children's recreation in Jebel Ali: four amusement parks will appear on the crescent of the island.
In the future, tourists will come to the Palm Islands to visit the unique marine aquarium. In Jebel Ali you can see dolphins, killer whales and other inhabitants of the sea.
And the largest and most unusual of the three Palm Islands will be Deira.
How to get there
You can get to the Palm Islands by Dubai Metro. The station is located on the shores of the Persian Gulf. Next, to quickly find yourself in a fairy tale, you can take a taxi.
A monorail is laid along the Palm Islands themselves. You will be able not only to get to your destination, but also to see all the wonderful things that the authorities and residents of Dubai were able to bring to life.
They also plan to launch ultra-modern airships across the Palm Islands. And the monorails will be integrated with the main line of the Dubai Metro.
Dubai, a city that 50 years ago was the poor relative of the UAE family, has today become the most progressive and fastest growing metropolis in the world. The financial impetus for such lightning-fast development was provided by the discovery of its own oil fields on the territory of the emirate in 1966. This fateful event contributed to the transformation of the fishing village into a global investment and tourism center. But today, income from the production and sale of oil accounts for only 5% of GDP, and the vast budget of the emirate is formed mainly through investment, real estate sales, trade and tourism.
When rebuilding the city, the sheikhs did not waste time on trifles. Intoxicated by their petrodollars, they began to enthusiastically improve their native lands. When looking at the modern appearance of Dubai, it is immediately clear that this splendor is nothing more than a mixture of irrepressible imagination and huge money.
In 2000, the Dubai authorities thought that they seemed to have everything, but there was not enough space. So they decided to create islands in the Persian Gulf. The result of these noble plans was a conglomerate of man-made objects, the largest of which was the Palm Jumeirah.
Jumeirah artificial islands - the most ambitious engineering and financial project yet
The legendary creation is the hero of many sections of the Guinness Book of Records, the largest artificial island in the world. The facility added even greater global fame to the emirate of Dubai and increased the length of the beach strip by more than 56 km (which is 9 times more than it was before construction). Also, almost 520 km of land went for the construction of the most expensive real estate in the Middle East, which, by the way, was sold out even before the end of construction.
The main initiator of the Jumeirah islands megaproject was Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler and absolute monarch of Dubai. And the calculations themselves and their implementation were handled by the Nakhil company, a state government developer, and hundreds of specially hired design specialists. The shape of the future island of Palm Jumeirah (United Arab Emirates) was not only a fantasy solution, but also the result of careful calculations, which made it possible to place a maximum of villas on it and lengthen the beach line. In addition, the choice of the shape of the island contains ideological overtones, because the date palm is a symbol of Dubai, and the object itself has the full name Palm Jumeirah, or “palm tree crown.”
How was the Palm Jumeirah built?
Construction of the island began in 2001, and already in 2006 the first buildings began to be erected. In 2008, the first huge hotel Atlantis The Palm 5* was opened. To create a strong soil, ordinary sand, which you can “eat with a spoon” in the desert around Dubai, was not suitable for. Sea sand was extracted from the bottom of the Persian Gulf by drying. Using special machines, the material was compacted using continuous vibrations. The shallow waters off the coast of Palm Jumeirah are not very susceptible to storms, but nevertheless the island was surrounded by a 3.5-meter protective breakwater built from rock. The place of each pebble in the mound was determined by a computer.
In total, 94 million m 3 of sand, 5.5 million m 3 of rock stones, 10 years of labor of 49 thousand workers and 52 billion dollars were used to create the island. If we sum up the entire volume of sand that was required to create the island of Palm Jumeirah (United Arab Emirates), then it would be enough to build a stable wall 2.5 meters high and a length commensurate with the equator.
Palm Jumeirah - a modern oriental fairy tale
Palm Jumeira is very reminiscent of something unreal and impossible. It seems that he is fantastic, straight out of the pages of the books of Lewis Carroll or Jules Verne. Many, seeing the artificial island of Palm Jumeirah, consider it the embodiment of oriental fantasies from the Arabian Nights fairy tales. In principle, this is quite understandable - they could not build an island worth more than 50 billion dollars in the style of Khrushchev’s high-rise buildings. The ostentatious splendor bordering on madness suits the style of this grandiose island. The most famous hotel, Atlantis the Palm, which is located on the breakwater, is decorated in the style of legends about the disappeared kingdom of Atlantis.
Palm Jumeirah is also a modern investment fairy tale. Back in 2003, Dubai's leadership revised many legislative dogmas and made fateful decisions to expand the investment and real estate market. Since then, Dubai has become an "investment doll." In addition to the national finances generated by the "black gold", millions of European and American currency flowed into the emirate. And when the famous terrorist attack of September 11 occurred in the United States, many decided to hide their finances in the Arab market, which was more reliable and profitable at that time.
Properties on Palm Jumeirah
Dubai, especially in the prestigious Palm Jumeirah area, has the most attractive and high-status real estate market in the eastern region, if not the entire continent. Even before the end of construction of the artificial island, most of the villas had already been sold. However, today some branches of Palma are still being overgrown with new villas.
Housing in Dubai became an attractive market unit only after the emirate's authorities made an unprecedented decision in 2003 - they granted foreign buyers the right to full ownership of the purchased property. Thus, Dubai has become the only city in the Persian Gulf where the purchase of real estate is a completely transparent procedure that is protected by international and national law.
Palm Jumeirah Hotels, Entertainment and Attractions
Only after the construction of infrastructure facilities, roads and hotels on the trunk of the palm tree, the island took on its completed appearance and the already familiar outlines of the Palm Jumeirah resort. Describing the area as a “city of the future” is by no means an exaggeration. Jumeirah is indeed a very high-tech and extremely prestigious region. It should be noted that Jumeirah is not only the name of an artificial island, but the entire area of the city, including beaches and hotels near Palma. On the island itself there are 25 prohibitively expensive hotels.
Also on the island of Palm Jumeirah there are the world famous shopping centers Jumeirah Town Center and Mercato Mall, which is decorated in a Renaissance style.
The absolute must-haves for visiting tourists with children are the Aquaventure water park (one of the largest in the world) and The Dolphin Bay dolphinarium, located in the Atlantis Hotel.
Palm Jumeirah: how to get to the attractions?
Today, the Palm District is not only the center of a beautiful, rich life, but also an important excursion site. Many tourists go to Jumeirah just to see, visit the malls or entertainment centers.
Palma can be reached by the highway that connects the island to the mainland, or by the monorail, which rises above the road. This road is a great way to get to the sites on the island and enjoy the fabulous views.
Some palm branches are connected by underground tunnels. All hotels on the island have helipads.
Followers of Palm Jumeirah, or Future Construction Projects of Dubai
The existing grandiose glory of the city of Dubai is probably not enough, so the fantasies of sheikhs and architects will not soon reach their apogee. The government's plans include even more extravagant projects, including several artificial archipelagos, a rock-built solar system prototype called The Universe, Lilypad, a floating city of the future, and an ecological planetary center.

81 ideas of what to do in DubaiThe man-made island is a triumph of engineering and a vivid symbol of the country's wealth.
Palm Jumeirah is an island wonder of the world created by human hands. The artificial island, repeating the outline of a palm tree with sixteen symmetrical “leaves”, where expensive villas, hotels, a water park and many kilometers of beaches are located, is direct proof of the greatness of the Emirate. It’s worth visiting here if only to appreciate what science, progress and money are capable of.
The man-made archipelago of Palm Jumeirah is small compared to its two sisters - Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira - but the first of its kind, and is a famous symbol of the United Arab Emirates along with the Sail Hotel (Burj Al Arab) and Burj Khalifa.
History of creation
In 2001, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashi al Maktoum decided to expand the coastline and create a paradise resort in the waters of the Persian Gulf, without using concrete or metal structures. At first, creating a structure that could withstand waves and storms using only sand and boulders seemed an impossible task, but they were not going to give up.
Photo: Palm Jumeirah Project
Construction of Palm Island has begun. A five-kilometer breakwater appeared, designed to protect the island from the Shamil storm. Then the construction of the island itself began, “leaf” by “leaf” - slowly and with difficulty a huge island appeared.
An additional difficulty was created by the fact that the sand of the Arabian deserts was not suitable for construction - it was too fine and easily washed out. Therefore, tons of sand had to be extracted with enormous effort from the bottom of the Persian Gulf and delivered to the coast. This very sand and stones used in construction would be enough to build a 2.5 meter wall around the globe.
Photo: Construction of the island
After 5 years, human talent, perseverance and science won. Palm Island was ready to welcome residents already in 2006. Luxurious villas and hotels took their place on the “leaves”. On the trunk of the palm tree there are restaurants, parks, shopping and entertainment complexes, water parks, and beach clubs. Three months later, an amazing coral reef with two submerged F-100 aircraft was added to this splendor to attract divers and strengthen the island's barrier reef protection.
The Palm Jumeirah breakwater reaches three meters in height and eleven and a half meters in length.
The size of Palm Jumeirah reaches 5.72 km².
Houses and villas were sold out in a record three days (the buyers were celebrities who wanted to retire to a paradise island).
The construction of Palm Island cost seven billion dollars.

The downside of luxury
Despite the grandeur and beauty of the island, environmentalists were not too happy about such changes in the flora and fauna of the Persian Gulf. After all, such changes are undoubtedly fraught with consequences. The authorities responded to numerous demands to protect marine life and built up part of the coast with artificial reefs, in addition, they promised that they were soon planning to switch the “palm trees” to environmentally friendly energy sources so as not to pollute the environment.Stagnation of water in the bays of the archipelago remains a significant problem. The breakwater is vital for protection, but it undoubtedly interferes with the renewal of water. Despite attempts to cope with this problem, visible results have not yet been achieved.
Last but not least is durability. How long can such a huge, but, oddly enough, fragile Palm Island of Jumeirah stand under climate change, rising water levels and raging waves that wash away the sand right from under our feet? The creators of the projects reassure investors that there is nothing to worry about in the next 800 years, and they can safely acquire a piece of heaven on earth.

Guest March 10, 2018We were just there yesterday. This is truly a miracle. Heaven on earth (or water). It’s worth working all year to go there at least once. Well done Arabs, they are building the economy of their country with dignity. Our “developers” should go there more often for training.
Guest January 15, 2018They say miracles don't happen! Isn't Dubai a miracle? Aren't artificial islands a miracle? And the fact that we, at least through the Internet, can see this is not a miracle!!! You never cease to be amazed at the power of human thought, perseverance, and the achievements of science and technology. How I would like to preserve this beauty for many generations!

7Palm Jumeirah is the first and most compact of three artificial Palm Islands, built in the shape of stylized palm trees off the coast of Dubai, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates. Two other similar objects - the Jabal Ali and Deira Palms - were started a little later, a year and three years later, respectively.
Construction of the Palm Jumeirah began in mid-2001. The work was carried out by an Arab development company founded a year before the start of the large-scale project. Its name - Nakheel - translated from Arabic means “palm tree” or “palm tree”. Five and a half years later, at the end of 2006, the territory of the bulk island was ready for a phased transfer for development and settlement. For various reasons, the date was repeatedly moved, as a result of which the planned time frame increased by a couple of years.
Description of Palm Jumeirah
Conventionally, the island is divided into three sections:
- "trunk";
- "crown";
- "crescent".
The "trunk" is the central part of Palm Jumeirah. In its thickened part, connected to the mainland by a 300-meter bridge, there are multi-storey buildings with associated infrastructure. There are shops, clubs, cafes, restaurants, beaches, beauty salons and other establishments and institutions necessary for modern life. There are highways along the entire “trunk”, and a monorail in the center. A car tunnel built under water and a bridge designed for the movement of monorail trains lead to the “crescent” from the top of the palm tree.
The “crown” consists of 16 palm branches. In the center of each of them there is a road, along which there are two rows of private villas. The planned distance between houses was reduced during construction work, thereby increasing the number of objects. The density turned out to be too high, which caused dissatisfaction among those who bought real estate in the initial stages. However, almost no one abandoned the houses. Apparently, a fresh breeze and own access to the sea turned out to be more important than the close presence of neighbors.
The “Crescent” functions as a breakwater barrier that protects the interior of Palm Jumeirah from destruction. According to the design, it was inextricable, but the lack of natural movement of water in the artificially surrounded water area foreshadowed the emergence of stagnant processes. Making two gaps in the 11-kilometer breakwater helped solve the problem.
The territory of the “crescent” is occupied by hotels, hotel residences, as well as resort, beach and entertainment complexes.
The total area of Palm Jumeirah is 5.6 square meters. km.
It is said that the artificial island was built from stones and sand, without the use of metal or concrete. This was done by order of the Emir of Dubai - Maktoum ibn Rashid Al Maktoum. He came up with the idea of building and designing the Palm Islands.
Dubai hotels on Palm Jumeirah
On the artificial island you can stay in a hotel, villa or apartment. Guests can enjoy swimming pools, private beaches and sunbathing terraces. The rooms have air conditioning, TVs with satellite antennas, free Wi-Fi, showers and toilets. In most cases, guests are offered continental breakfasts and the ability to use the kitchen. Car rental is available upon customer request.
The first hotel on the island was the grandiose 5-star hotel Atlantis The Palm, which today has been turned into a huge tourist complex. This multi-storey building, unique in architecture, occupies the central location of the “crescent” of Palm Jumeirah and is considered the hallmark of the island. The hotel is famous for its luxurious rooms, including super-suites with stunning views of the azure waters of the Persian Gulf. The complex has a lot of entertainment - Aquaventure water park, dolphinarium, Underwater World Museum, Diving center, sea safaris with sharks. Guests can enjoy beach and nightclubs, world-class restaurants, spas and luxury boutiques.
Aquaventure water park
The main attraction of the Palm Jumeirah island is the Aquaventure water park, located on the territory of the Atlantis The Palm complex. It has no equal in Dubai, the Middle East and Europe. On an area of 17 hectares there are exciting attractions and a pristine beach. The children's area has 14 water slides of varying difficulty and a fun island. The most interesting water trip for adults is rafting along an artificial canal with river rapids 1.6 km long. You can go on incredible adventures with your whole family through the Shark Lagoon, without diving skills and completely safely.
The water park is open from 10:00 until sunset. Tickets are sold on the website or at the ticket office near the park. When booking online, the cost of a one-day visit to Aquaventure is:
- if visitors are over 1.2 m tall - 289 dirhams;
- with a height of up to 1.2 meters - 235 dirhams.
Children under 2 years of age and guests of Atlantis The Palm have free admission. Adventure programs are paid separately. You can find out more detailed information and buy a ticket on the official website of the tourist complex.
Things to do
The Palm Jumeirah offers many interesting entertainments for tourists - beach holidays, diving, yachting, water sports, nightclubs, restaurants, shopping, various events.
Boat trips are organized around the island, allowing you to look at the sights of Dubai from the outside.

Palm Jumeirah is the largest artificial island on Earth, a real miracle created by man. With its outlines it follows the palm tree (trunk and 16 symmetrically arranged leaves), which is surrounded by a crescent-shaped breakwater to protect it from the destructive effects of waves. The island has a huge number of luxurious private villas, hotels, skyscrapers, shopping and entertainment centers, parks, and beach clubs.
Palm Jumeirah is located in the United Arab Emirates, on the shores of the Persian Gulf near the coast of Dubai. By the way, this is one of the three islands of the Palm Islands complex, which increases the coastline of the Dubai emirate by 520 km. And although the Palm Jumeirah island is smaller than the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira, it was created first and thanks to this it has become the “calling card” of the UAE.
You need to visit the United Arab Emirates, in particular Dubai, at least to see the Palm Jumeirah and appreciate what talented people, knowledge and money can create.
The history of the Palm Jumeirah
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
The idea to create a unique man-made island in the Persian Gulf belongs to UAE Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This idea came to him back in the 1990s, when there was no suitable place left for the development of new buildings on plots of land near the sea coast of the emirate of Dubai. The construction of the miracle island, designed to increase the coastline of the emirate with the aim of further developing tourism, began in 2001.
For the construction, 94,000,000 m³ of sand and 5,500,000 m³ of stone were used - this volume of material would be enough to build a wall 2.5 meters high along the equator of the entire globe. The main difficulty was that the sand from the UAE deserts turned out to be unsuitable for constructing an artificial embankment: it is very fine, and because of this, water easily washed it away. Incredible efforts were expended to lift tons of sand from the seabed and deliver it to the coast of the emirate. When creating the sand embankment, neither cement nor steel reinforcements were needed - the entire structure is supported only by its own weight. However, this unique project has proven its viability, as Palm Jumeirah has been successfully existing since 2006.
“Crown of a palm tree” is exactly how “Palm Jumeirah” is translated, and the photo from above clearly shows that the outlines of a man-made mound completely repeat the silhouette of a palm tree. Interestingly, the choice of this form is explained not only by the fact that the palm tree is a symbol of the emirate of Dubai. Just with a relatively insignificant diameter of 5.5 km, the trunk has 16 leaf branches with a total coastline of 56 km - if the island had a round shape, this figure would be 9 times less. The artificial island is surrounded by a crescent-shaped breakwater stretching for 11 km. To strengthen the protection of the island, and at the same time attract divers to the coast of the emirate, all this splendor was supplemented with a coral reef with two sunken F-100 aircraft.
Sights of the resort area
Tourists coming to the resorts of Dubai (UAE) are offered a wide variety of leisure options: relaxing on the beaches, diving courses, walks on the sea, helicopter flights, all kinds of entertainment at hotels, classes in fitness clubs, visits to spa centers, excursions to museums and much more.
Holidays by the sea
The most pleasant and comfortable weather conditions for a holiday on the sea coast on Palm Jumeirah are observed in mid-autumn. This is the time of the “velvet” season in the emirate of Dubai, when the water temperature in the Persian Gulf is at +20 – +23 °C, when it will be pleasant to sunbathe under the sun’s rays and hide in the shade of a beach umbrella.
The coast of Jumeirah is a series of beach areas covered with snow-white soft sand, with clean water, with convenient and comfortable descents into the water. There are different beaches here:
- free, which can be visited by both residents of Dubai and tourists visiting the UAE;
- private, belonging to a specific residential complex or hotel - as a rule, entry to them is closed;
- paid public parks and beaches.
Jumeirah Public Beach
Of the public beaches, it is worth highlighting Jumeirah Public Beach, which is located near the Dubai Marina Hotel and the Jumeirah Mosque. Although it is not equipped, it is very spacious and clean.
Among the beaches owned by hotels, you should pay attention to the beach of the Atlantis Hotel. After all, not only guests of Atlantis can relax on it, but also vacationers who decide to visit the Aquaventure water park. Access to this private beach is included in the admission price to the water park.
There is a Shoreline beach on the island, which belongs to a residential complex of the same name consisting of 20 high-rise buildings. It is noteworthy that entry to Shoreline is allowed not only to people from the area, but also to ordinary tourists. The residential complex is guarded, making holidays there completely safe.

Problems Palm Jumeirah
Although the island is very beautiful, environmentalists in the UAE and around the world are excited about the changes taking place in the plant and animal life of the Persian Gulf. In response to multiple demands to make life safe for marine life, the authorities of the Emirate of Dubai have built artificial reefs off the coast and plan to supply energy from environmentally friendly sources on all artificial islands.
The presence of a breakwater also creates certain problems. It is extremely important for protection from waves, but at the same time it leads to stagnation of water in the bays and provokes the appearance of an unpleasant odor from it.
