Biography of Roberto Cavalli
Roberto was born into a middle-class working-class family. His father was a mining engineer, and his mother sewed clothes. Cavalli lost his father in early childhood - he was killed by the Nazis. Because of this tragedy, the boy remained silent until he was 10 years old. After this tragedy, his mother moved him and his sister to live with their grandfather. Roberto's grandfather, Giuseppe Rossi, was a famous impressionist artist. His works were presented in the collection of the Uffizi Gallery.
After the war, Roberto's mother remarried. However, her stepfather turned out to be very cruel and often beat her and the children, so they soon separated. Roberto did not study well at this time, and did not consider school to be something obligatory. He did not take his mother’s arguments in favor of education seriously, and his grandfather was not at all interested in his grandson, considering him mediocre. The grandfather's attitude towards his grandson changed after one day, bored, Roberto drew a portrait of his aunt sitting opposite. Giuseppe carefully kept this portrait in his possession, and after his death he left all his property to his grandson.
Roberto's reluctance to study led to his expulsion from school at age 16. The mother was extremely upset by this and told her son that since he did not want to study, he should look for a job. Then Cavalli unexpectedly showed seriousness and entered the art school of Florence to study textile design. He studied diligently, but refused to take the final exams, considering it unnecessary.
At the same time, Cavalli began to actively look for a way to make quick money. He came up with the idea of dyeing old ones instead of creating new ones. Having bought all the remaining clothes from factories, Roberto began to remake the clothes. Soon his small shop became successful and the business began to expand. New desks and rooms were purchased. And Roberto patented his technology for coloring materials.
Already in 1960, Roberto opened a small factory in Florence. A few years later, Roberto Cavalli's collections were already successfully sold in branded stores in France and the USA.
Leather clothing models released in 1972 became a huge success. And in the 90s, Cavalli created another revolution in the world of fashion, using sandblasting technologies and lycra thread to create and decorate denim clothing.
For more than 40 years of work, in 2002 the fashion artist was awarded the title of best designer of the year according to fashion magazine ratings. And over all these years, he has never changed his preferences: patterns on fabrics imitating the color of the skins of wild animals, sparkles and rhinestones, as well as feathers and soft colored leather.

Roberto Cavalli: biography
Roberto Cavalli was born into a creative family, having quite strong prerequisites for devoting his life to the creative skills of a painter and designer. This significant and long-awaited event for parents took place on November 15, 1940. Roberto's father is surveyor Giorgio Cavalli, his mother is a dressmaker, Marcella Cavalli, and his maternal grandfather is none other than Giuseppe Rossi, one of the participants in the Italian Macchiaioli movement, a famous impressionist artist. Roberto Cavalli's childhood was very difficult; as a little boy he lost his father, killed by the Nazis. The grief of the whole family has had such a strong impact on the child’s psyche that he begins to speak only at the age of 10, having never uttered a word before. The boy was saved by communication with his grandfather, who taught him to put all his accumulated emotions into drawing, trusting the boy with an easel and a brush from an early age. Times were difficult, and very soon Roberto was forced to leave childhood games and begin helping his mother create new dresses and suits.Roberto Cavalli: training
The work of his mother, whom Roberto watched from childhood, his grandfather’s stories about the tempting fate of great artists and his personal desire to devote his life to art led Roberto Cavalli from the school threshold to the walls of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where the young man spent a long time studying the types of textiles and prints on this material. Roberto studied with great enthusiasm and very soon was recognized as one of the best students ever to study at this Academy.
This happened in 1957. Taking advantage of special privileges, Roberto Cavalli, even during his years of study, created his own collection of floral decorations for clothes and shoes, which immediately attracted the close attention of Italian hosiery factories. Roberto Cavalli also conducted long and very successful experiments in search of new ways of dyeing fabrics, dreaming of getting a dye that would never wash out. Being 20 years old, Roberto Cavalli already knew and was able to do what many people who lived before him and even after him almost learned all of my life. It was at this age that he developed a dye formula that helped him beautifully and efficiently color a piece of leather, something that no one had even tried to do before.
Roberto Cavalli: design and beauty
Roberto Cavalli began his rise to the top in 1960, after he began working on creating prints for an Italian knitting factory. In the same year, successful in all respects for the aspiring fashion star, Roberto opens his own small factory for the production of T-shirts with prints, jeans and leather clothing. At the invitation of the Fashion House Mario Valentino, Roberto spent some time within its walls as an outside designer, which gave the young man good experience that would serve him well in the future.
The beginning of the 70s in the career of a fashion designer was also very successful; it was at this time that he invented a new method of dyeing leather, which made it possible to do this using 6 different colors, which no one had ever succeeded in doing before. With his new invention, Roberto Cavalli goes to Paris, demonstrating unique opportunity In many fashion houses, such as Hermes and Pierre Cardin, who willingly paid for all its maintenance and movement.
At the age of 30, Roberto Cavalli presented a fashion collection of women's clothing for the first time in his life; this happened in the Pret-a-Porter fashion salon in Paris. The collection was to the taste of the experts and critics present, and it was shown a few days later in Florence on the catwalks of Sala Bianca and Palazzo Pitti. The first collection consisted of beautiful tight-fitting jeans decorated with prints, leather clothing, brocade and wardrobe items decorated with prints of wild animals. The items presented very soon became the most popular among fashionistas not only in France and Italy, but throughout the whole world; actress Brigitte Bardot was the first to dare to wear the clothes of the young designer, followed by everyone else.
Success brought Roberto Cavali not only fame, but also some money, with which in 1972 he opened his own boutique in Saint-Tropez, a suburb of Paris, selling mainly goods for young people; it was in this place that one could buy the most beautiful and fashionable clothes for going to night discos.
In 1974, Roberto Cavalli developed a clothing line for men, but it was not particularly popular and tailoring ceased. This is due to the crisis that occurred for many fashion houses, including Roberto Cavalli, in the second half of the 1970s.
Minimalism came into fashion, the mini style won the hearts of both young people and older people, clothes designed by Roberto Cavalli could not fit into this general madness, so the designer leaves for Florence and refuses to present new clothing lines at fashion shows, withdrawing for a while time away from work. Roberto Cavalli held his only show during his forced retirement in 1985, choosing as the venue the podium of the Studio 54 club, which at that time had a rather bad reputation.
Roberto Cavalli finally emerged from the crisis only in 1994, launching a new collection of tight jeans made from a material called elastic denim. Jeans became very popular; one could witness entire massacres in boutiques distributing the collection for their possession. A few months later, allowing himself to enjoy his newly returned success, Roberto Cavalli sends models onto the catwalk in short dresses with zebra skin prints. Celebrities were absolutely delighted with the outfits presented and very soon they began to appear on carpets wearing similar items. The designer's most famous clients include Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, David Beckham and rapper Sean "P Diddy" Combs. By the end of the year, Roberto Cavalli was already able to open several boutiques in Italy and France. Clothing from a famous designer has become so popular that the cost of one item has increased hundreds and thousands of times compared to what it cost at the beginning of the fashion designer's career.
Dresses and jeans from Roberto Cavalli are worn by Madonna herself; his brand was mentioned in the cult series of all American housewives “Sex in big city", one of the heroines of the series laments about the fact that the guy forced her to throw away her dress not from anyone, but from Cavalli himself, which, in the opinion of the heroine, is the greatest proof of love for a fan.
Roberto Cavalli strives not only to create clothes, he is constantly looking for ways to turn a woman into a real queen with the help of an outfit. Naturally, most of the outfits he creates are completely unsuitable for everyday wear, but the designer does not pretend to do so.
It was he who was the first to take the stage, accompanied by models dressed in fur. A sea of fur, fur everywhere, from dresses to sandals and handbags, this is the designer’s vision, for which he has been criticized more than once by ill-wishers, which does not prevent Roberto Cavali from acquiring new boutiques, one of which was opened in 1999 on one of the most prestigious streets New York.
Thanks to the work put into setting up the store, sales of the brand increased several times by 2002, and also this year Roberto Cavalli received the title “Designer of the Year”, awarded to him by Fashion Group International in New York. It was Roberto Cavalli who was entrusted by Playboy in 2005 to remake its famous rabbit, which the designer coped with without much difficulty, earning a lot of praise.
In 2010, the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the start of work in the fashion industry took place, at which Roberto Cavalli was awarded the status of “Best of best brand luxury women's clothing", after the announcement of which Roberto Cavalli said that from now on the main objective his work is the creation of things that would suit all women, while emphasizing the femininity of their nature. Indeed, many Hollywood women prefer to wear clothes from Roberto Cavalli.

The famous fashion designer Roberto Cavalli opened the doors of his family estate, which is located in the vicinity of Florence, for InStyle magazine. Together with the designer, the guests were met by his wife and “right hand” Eva.
The Cavalli home is surrounded by cypress trees, and in the driveway there is a copper sculpture of a horse (cavalli means “horse” in Italian) created by family friend, artist Arturo di Monica.
The building itself resembles either a winery or a monastery - angular medieval architecture, brickwork visible under a thick layer of plaster, and arched windows halfway up the ancient walls. Outside the windows is Tuscany: cypress trees, clusters of wisteria, golden hills.
When Roberto Cavalli first met his future wife Eva, he rented a house remote from the city, until one day the elderly owner of the building said: “I want to sell it, you will have to leave.” But the family decided to stay and gradually bought the building, which at that time was one medieval tower. “Everything happened gradually,” said Eva. - Children were born, we needed new rooms. But in Italy, permits are required for the smallest alterations; you can’t touch anything, because it’s a historical object.”
However, the tower on "Strawberry Hill", as the place is called, began to acquire additions, and eventually new houses appeared next to it.
“Our children grow up, have children of their own - and we build house after house here, nearby. I want all generations of Cavalli to live together,” said Eva, and Roberto continued: “At first you buy just stones, old stones, each of which can tell a story. And now the house is not part of my biography, but I am part of his life.”
In the estate, the premises are not assigned rigid functions - the entire first floor is a continuous gallery of rooms flowing into one another, in which medieval sculptures and icons of the 16th century coexist with works of modern artists and classics (their Cavalli spouses have been collecting for decades and have acquired all over the world). Roberto and Eva’s home also includes eclectic interior items from the Roberto Cavalli Home collection, launched in 2012.
“I started creating furniture many years ago and planned a full-fledged collection for a very long time - in my youth I dreamed of being an architect and interior designer. But I don’t strive for a unified interior; I like eclecticism. I want every person at home to have a piece of my taste, my passion, my luck,” emphasized Roberto Cavalli.
Eva, in turn, is interested in setting and decorating tables and is even going to publish a book on this topic. “I’m not looking for standard ways: I often use my jewelry as decoration,” noted Cavalli’s wife.
The bedrooms and rooms of the owners are located on the second floor - to facilitate access to the top, an elevator was even built in the old house. Apart from the fur carpets, there is surprisingly little ostentatious luxury in the house.
“I don’t like luxury at all - it’s much better to surround others with it, to make people feel rich. I like to observe, because my clients are usually richer than me. And it is necessary that appearance corresponded to the content,” said Roberto Cavalli.
Roberto Cavalli and Eva Duringer met in 1977 and got married in 1980.
