Rock shaan kaya how to get. The lake near the Shaan-kaya rock. Emerald bead over Alupka
In August 2007, an entry by the famous Crimean author Alexander Gaiko appeared on the “Rest in Crimea” forum: “ Yesterday, August 24, 2007 at about 8:30 p.m., a fire appeared at the top, slightly below the plateau. The place of the hearth is to the west of the path through Malay-Bogaz. Who was in Alupka, he remembers that a triangle of forest rises to the Ai-Petri plateau, which with its top only slightly does not reach the very top. A steep path goes up through this triangle, leading to the Malay-Bogaz pass. The path goes to the right of the top of the triangle when viewed from below, but there is a side path to the left, which ends just below this top. It seems that the tourists missed, and instead of taking the fork to the right, they went left and ran into the rocks. Or maybe they specifically decided to arrange a barbecue there. This is no longer the point. It blew so...»
To be able to imagine the scale of the catastrophe, I will simply quote a few more entries from the same forum.
“26-08-07, 11:51. Nothing comforting. The fire is steadily moving west. It burns around Shaan-Kai, burns over Kasimovka, burns over Yuzhnoberezhny. Yesterday, the fire in the Malay-Bogaz area seems to have died down, today it flared up with renewed vigor. Fire equipment is present, they are trying to extinguish the fire, but with such a scale of equipment and people, there should be approximately 50 times more ...
Vacationers peacefully roam Alupka and swim on air mattresses. Now the Shaankai water pipeline will burn out, and Alupka will be left without drinking water ... In fact, what is happening now is a catastrophe that requires emergency measures. But so far we are only seeing a buildup.”
“26-08-07, 16:23. At the site of a fire on the territory of the Alupka forestry of the Yalta mountain forestry nature reserve two people died. According to Channel 5 with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, a husband and wife died in their car, surrounded by fire. As it turned out, the fire in the reserve arose as a result of kindling a fire by a resident of Kharkov, who on August 24 got lost in the forest.

“26-08-07, 20:28. The press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea reports that the victims were identified as an employee of the Opolznevsky forestry, born in 1965, and his wife, born in 1967. “The couple, being trapped in a fire, did not have time to escape and died in the forest, at the site of the fire,” the Ministry of Emergency Situations noted.
Volodymyr Ivanov, assistant head of the Crimean Head Office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Ukraine in the autonomy, informs that 802 people and 57 units of special equipment are working at the site of the fire ... Now the total area of the forest engulfed in fire is 54 hectares.
As it became known earlier, the culprit of the fire on the territory of the Alupka forestry of the Yalta mountain forest reserve is a 29-year-old tourist from Kharkov, who, having lost his way on Friday, lit a fire to attract attention to himself. The bonfire covered an area of several hundred square meters in a few minutes. Rescuers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations arrived in time for the tourist at a time when the fire posed a threat to his life. An investigation is underway." “27-08-07, 10:58. Yesterday, in the second half of the day, a complete calm set in ... The smoke and fire subsided, mountains appeared, there was one large local hearth and many small ones.
But, unfortunately, at night it flared up again as if nothing had been extinguished. When completely calm, the fire spreads very slowly and very surely in all directions. Traffic on the highway in the Alupka area has already been blocked. I'm not talking about the fact that the cable car has not been working since Saturday. The city was shrouded in acrid smoke. In the morning, finally, for the first time ever, a helicopter with a barrel appeared. With this barrel, the helicopter draws sea water, then dumps the water into the fire. Having made six or seven flights, the helicopter flew to Yalta for refueling and appeared only after an hour and a half. Dead poultice. It looks like only a very heavy downpour can extinguish the fire. But according to the weather forecast, the rainy season is postponed until the second half of September.
The consequences of the fire are not yet visible, everything is in smoke.
“28-08-07, 13:03. Yesterday, on August 27, two more from Kherson joined the lone helicopter, which was extinguishing the forest from the barrel, and a little later - another military man.
Together, almost without interruption, they flew almost until dark. The capacity of the barrel is two and a half tons. Also, at about 12:00, a firefighting plane also joined them, which already takes 8.5 tons of water on board. Together, the main fires were localized. The strong wind, which had been rising towards night yesterday, soon subsided. Therefore, this morning it remains only to carry out a preventive spill of smoldering fires by two helicopters. Now it is quiet over Alupka, the weather is clear, calm, and the forest is very clearly visible. The consequences are terrible - about 70% of the forest burned out from Krestovaya Mountain to the Blue Bay!
From the information in the press, it is not yet clear whether the tourist had an EXPLICIT instruction from the rescuers to make a fire. At least when the tourist contacted the rescuers by mobile phone, he was ASKED to mark his place in one way or another with a flashlight or at least a flash from a camera. Perhaps this gave him the idea to light a fire. The cellular operator has a record of conversations on mobile phones, then it's a matter of technology. Now it’s too late to wave your fists, but, apparently, in the future, in such a situation, a tourist should be colorfully warned that if he makes a fire, he himself will burn in it.
And it's better - to block very hard access to the Crimean forests, as it was under socialism. As sad as it sounds. But we will be completely without a forest ... "
It seems that someone remembered this fire and these words of Alexander Gaiko while blocking the forests in the hot summer of 2010. Then there was a lot of controversy on the Web - we, they say, are good and do not burn fires. But, looking even now - four years later - at the consequences of that fire, one involuntarily agrees with any of the toughest measures, if only they would help prevent such disasters. By the way, in the tenth - they helped.
We set off on our first trip to Shaan-Kaya in early October 2009. We heard about the fire. Friends from Alupka told me that they used to like to go to the riding forest for butter, but now ... Now there is nothing to do there. It hurts to look at the scorched forest, and they even expressed it more harshly - there is nothing to see there, do not go! But the unknown beckons, the photos seen on the Web teased, and the sunny, warm weather promised a wonderful day ...
The route starts from the highway "Yalta-Sevastopol". The fork, behind which the primer begins, is located almost exactly above the Pozharka stop in Alupka - from there a narrow street goes up steeply to the highway, on which you need to turn left and walk west for a kilometer. Foolishly, instead of returning a little to Yalta from the Pitomnik stop, we climbed up to the vineyards right at the intersection with the Old Sevastopol Highway and walked along them. It’s better not to do this - they can bite ... And to make it easier to navigate, I will give a map from the site “About Crimea with bated breath.”
And then the forest began. More precisely, what was left of him ... No, the inhabitants of Alupka are wrong - there is something to look at. Moreover, you need to look at it. And as noted above, lead and show. We must pay tribute to the Crimean teachers - they lead and show, we have met schoolchildren here more than once ... This is firstly. And secondly, yes, it became creepy, but the beauty remained. Even walking through the conflagration, you are amazed at the richness and generosity of the local landscapes.
At the rocks of "Small Shanghai" it is necessary to make a decision where to go further - here is a kind of fork. Directly above us is the sheer wall of Shaan-Kai, which the locals much more often call the word “Shanghai”, which is more harmonious for the Russian ear. Its southern slope is more than steep - it is a 250-meter wall with a negative slope. Translated from Turkic, Shaan-Kaya (871m) means "Falcon Rock", accessible only to falcons. Shaan-Kaya is a cult mountain for Crimean mountaineering, only a few routes lead to the top, and almost all of them are extremely difficult - categories from 5B to 8B according to the climbing classification. In general, only experienced climbers go straight, but we have to choose: go around the mountain on the right along the Eastern Shanghai trail or go left along the more spectacular, but more difficult, Western Shanghai trail. We chose the spectacle. Moreover, for the first acquaintance with these places, we decided to limit ourselves to climbing Shaan-Kaya from the north and returning to Alupka. Although there was time to climb to the Ai-Petri Yaila, we decided to leave this adventure for later, so that not everything was delicious at once.
However, we did not leave the rocks immediately - these rocks above our heads are a very powerful sight, these huge boulders immersed in the burgundy thickets of skumpii ... And also the sun, hiding from time to time in the clouds, looking out from behind them, so transformed the landscape, that it was very difficult to break away from the contemplation of this endless variety. But since we refused to climb the yaila, we had plenty of time to enjoy the view of the rocks covering half the sky, and admire the panorama of the rocky wall from Shaan-Kai to Ai-Petri, striking in scale and grandeur, even despite the scorched forest below.
US Yosemite National Park is considered one of the most beautiful places on our planet. Meeting with the reserve, which hides the amazing beauty of virgin nature, leaves no one indifferent. However, you should not go on a long journey to enjoy the amazing landscapes.
In the Crimea, not far from Alupka, next to the Ai-Petri Yayla, there is a miraculous landmark, which is a miniature copy of America's unique ecological system.
Neighborhoods reminiscent of scenery from science fiction films
Falcon Mountain, or Shaan-Kaya, is an unusual natural monument that separated from the Ai-Petri massif many centuries ago, obeying tectonic movements. Having crawled away for one and a half kilometers, it rises independently at an altitude of about 250 meters above sea level. As tourists who have visited the area say, this corner is very similar to the scenery for science fiction films, when the main characters are transferred to the era of dinosaurs. Here everything reminds of prehistoric times, but without strolling predatory lizards.
The majestic rock is an amazing sight: when you look at it from afar, it is a bit lost against the background of the rest of the Crimean mountains, but close up it looks quite severe and powerful. It seems that Shaan-Kaya (Crimea) is growing right out of the ground in the middle of centuries-old pines, hanging over a person and covering the sky. The unusual terrain has made the mountain one of the most difficult climbing routes. Only in 1966, the first daredevils were able to conquer the summit, for which they received the title of champion.
The miraculous sight of Crimea
The Shaan-Kaya ledge, hanging over the Black Sea, near the village of Simeiz, is distinguished by a gentle northern slope, overgrown with forest, and on the south side it is a sheer cliff, which many extreme people dream of conquering. The 871-meter-high mountain is made up of limestone that formed over 130 million years ago at the bottom of the Tethys Ocean. It existed in the Mesozoic era, separating two ancient continents.
At the foot of the mountain, scientists often find traces with imprints of extinct organisms on stones that appeared after various processes, as a result of which the Crimean mountains grew on the site of the dried ocean.
Extreme magnet
Shaan-Kaya is a landmark mountain for all climbers. There are several high-difficulty routes for rock climbers. The fact is that there are very few flat areas and a small number of cracks. However, the difficulty of climbing does not frighten people seeking thrills. The mountain was chosen by rope jumpers jumping from the top to the top, and the negative slope of the rock allows them to do this with minimal risk. In addition, it was chosen by paragliders flying over 200 meters in the air.
A special platform for extreme sportsmen has been created here, where experienced instructors work. In addition, those who wish are provided with video equipment that allows them to capture what is happening. It is curious to observe on the film that storm of vivid emotions experienced by those jumping down from a height. And all the tourists keep their eyes on the paragliders competing with each other.
Attractive place for tourists
However, ordinary tourists, who do not even think about climbing or jumping from the Shaan-Kaya cliff, will be interested in being in a stone-pine city. At the foot of the gigantic mountain, "torn off" from the southern ridge, everyone feels its power, and clean air and incredible landscapes make it possible to walk around for hours, getting real pleasure. The steep slope of the rock, which opens before the eyes of travelers, is simply mesmerizing.
"Emerald Bead"
Nearby is a small lake Shaan-Kaya, which attracts romantics. This is an "untwisted" place, and a few tourists pitch tents near a picturesque reservoir, the beauty of which does not leave connoisseurs of beauty indifferent. Locals also fish here, catching small perches and carps. But most often people come here in search of a quiet and peaceful place, where the air smells deliciously of pine needles and there is no fuss.
The lake near the Shaan-Kaya rock (locals affectionately call it "emerald bead") arose as a result of lowering both the relief and karst waters. They come to the surface and feed the natural wonder, from the banks of which stunning views open up.
Here is the purest icy water, which remains cool even in the sweltering heat, but this does not frighten the bathing people, who later warm themselves by the fire. You can stock up on life-giving moisture, since it takes about an hour to walk to the nearest store. And those who wish to stay for the night enjoy a delightful spectacle: shining sparks of stars are reflected in the purest water.
Paradise for hikers
The surroundings of Shaan-Kai are considered a real paradise for savages who go hiking in companies. Dozens are laid hiking trails, leading to a rock, from the height of which you can clearly see The winding road goes through pine thickets, tiny vineyards, areas covered with boulders, and you also have to go through a blackening dead forest that survived a terrible fire several years ago. There are parking lots where you can take shelter from the pouring rain and build a fire.
It often happens that little-known places are of particular interest even to experienced travelers. And they deserve to be visited by as many tourists as possible. Amazing corners, unfamiliar to the general public, leave an indelible mark on the soul, evoking the most sincere emotions.
A few kilometers northwest of Alupka, the majestic, almost 900 meters high, Shaan-Kaya rock rises. And on the way to the rock, between the pines, a small nameless lake hid. From here a stunning view of Shaan-Kaya opens, and a little further - the mountains of the Crimean ridge. The lake itself is also very picturesque: this quiet corner is loved by tourists for its clear greenish water, bright greenery along the banks, and also for the opportunity to have a great rest and get a charge of positive emotions.
You can get to the lake by a well-worn hiking trail. To do this, along the South Coast Highway we get to the turn to Alupka, and there we move about one and a half kilometers towards the mountains. And here we have everything that is needed for camping, except perhaps the benefits of civilization. When planning a trip to the lake, you should remember that there are no shops, cafes, or hotels within a radius of several kilometers, so you need to stock up on provisions and equipment in advance and to the maximum. In particular, food and drinking water are indispensable tourist travelers, so you can replenish their supplies in Alupka. In addition, tourists who have already rested in this truly fabulous place say that you can find a source of drinking water in the nearby rocks, so it all depends on you. We must not forget about the fuel that will be needed both for cooking and just to sit by the fire, admiring the clear waters of the lake in the moonlight. Finding firewood and brushwood is not a problem here, but if you are not used to finding fuel on your own, then it is better to take a couple of armfuls of firewood or a gas burner with you. In this case, you can spend two or three unforgettable days on the lake, enjoying the silence, fresh air and unique landscape.
Water in the lake comes from underground sources, so although it is crystal clear, it is very cold. However, in summer you can swim here, and in winter even "walruses" come here. And for fishing, the place is the most successful. As in other mountain lakes, everything is standard here: mostly carp, perch and carp are caught. If you are lucky with the weather, then something more interesting will be on the hook, for example, grass carp. For catching it, ordinary carp tackle and vegetable bait are suitable - reed stalks, corn, cucumber ovaries. Fishermen claim that even trophy specimens can be caught on this lake - up to 10 kg, so go for it! In general, although these and similar lakes are not famous for their abundant catches of rare fish species, they still have one big advantage. Such quiet places are ideal for novice fishermen, since fishing does not require much experience, no special skills, no specific equipment. To enjoy fishing, and perhaps even treat yourself to fish soup on a fire, a float rod and patience are enough.
It must be said that the surroundings of Shaan-Kai are a real paradise for hikers. There are dozens hiking trails to the rock, from which almost the entire southern coast of Crimea is visible. The road to it runs through vineyards, thickets of pines, rocky areas with huge boulders on the sides, and in some places through an ominous forest, dead after fires. The mountain has become a real Mecca for local climbers - even though climbing it is extremely difficult. And recently, Rope jumpers have chosen Shaan-Kaya (or Nishan-Kaya, as it is also called). For five years now, thrill-seekers have been jumping off a cliff on a dynamic rope. An unusual feature of the rock - its negative slope - allows you to do this with the least risk for jumpers.
The lake near the Shaan-Kaya rock is an amazing body of water that attracts romantics and savages like a magnet. To set up a tent camp on the shore of such a reservoir is a dream of many, but even a simple short walk towards the lake will not leave indifferent connoisseurs of untouched nature.
On the southern coast of Crimea. It is not part of the Main Ridge of the Crimean Mountains, but is pushed out to the sea, in front of the Alupka Wall.
If you look at Shaan-Kaya from above, you will see that this rock seemed to break away from the main Ai-Petri mountain range and slid down a little, wanting to get to the sea. Who knows, maybe someday she will succeed.
Its northern slope is quite flat and gentle - it is here that hiking tourists walk. But the southern slope is just the same very steep, here the tortured groups of climbers pass, competitions are made, in a word, life is in full swing. Climbers should be aware that the height difference of the Shaan-Kai wall reaches 250 m, local routes are classified as 6th category in terms of difficulty.
Shaan-Kaya can be considered a place where three cultures meet. Often it is compared with the top of El Capitan in the USA - the same sheer wall, going up 250 meters. Also, this place can be associated with China, because the locals called it Shanghai. Nearby, by the way, are the rocks of Little Shanghai. The main name of the mountain is translated as “Falcon Rock”. It is named so because it is almost impossible to get here from the southern slopes. Only in 1966 the summit was conquered by Soviet climbers. This conquest went down in history: after all, the largest canopy in the USSR with a negative slope.
Address: Southern coast of Crimea, not far from Alupka and Simeiz.
How to get there: to just walk under or around Shaan-Kai, you can take buses No. 28 or No. 42 from the Yalta bus station, which go to the Pitomnik stop in Alupka. From there - up the road, then through the vineyards to get to a dirt road, which will lead almost under the wall of the ridge. Quite a long walk because the best way- on your own car, taxi or catch a fellow traveler.
For rope jumpers and climbers, everything is easier: they are taken out as part of teams, as a rule, for several days - with preliminary briefing and overnight stays in tents.

Among the numerous picturesque lakes of the Crimea, there are so small that they do not even have their own specific name, that is, they are associated with neighboring attractions. But they are not without their charm, always attracting the attention of tourists. These reservoirs include a small lake near the Shaan-Kaya rock, not far from Alupka.
Where is the reservoir in the Crimea?
The lake is located at the picturesque Shaan-Kaya rock, closest to it, a little further - and. In the list of natural attractions of Crimea, it occupies a worthy place against the backdrop of tourist "giants". By the way, according to some sources, the reservoir is called Kasimovsky.
Lake on the map of Crimea
Geological past of the lake
Rock Shaan-Kaya, near which there is a lake, is remarkable in itself. In obedience to tectonic movements, she separated from and "creeped away" one and a half kilometers towards the sea.
Now it rises as a huge boulder, about 250 m high (871 m above sea level), which has a rocky mirror with a negative slope on the south side. not far from the rock formation arose as a result of a local lowering of the relief and karst waters that come to the surface in this place. Feeding on underground springs, it has clean water that remains cold even on hot summer days.
Such an unusual relief, due to geology, made the rock one of the most difficult in the former USSR. It was climbed by climbers only in 1966, and the trio of daredevils received the title of champions of the Union for climbing the route.
Emerald bead over Alupka
The lake near the Shaan-Kaya rock, as already noted, is quite small. But it is very popular with local residents, and the guests of the peninsula.
It is easy to get to it, you need to turn off the South Coast Highway towards the mountains directly above Alupka, near the Pitomnik stop.
Two paths lead to the reservoir and the rock formation, one of which is called "Jewish". The trails are interesting in themselves, they wind through huge boulders, sometimes they go into small pine forests, and sometimes they cross tiny vineyards.
You will have to walk not far, only about one and a half kilometers. The lake is clearly visible from afar; on fine days, there are always tents of tourists and fishermen here. Fishing in the reservoir is not so rich, but crucians, perches and carps are caught regularly.
But often people come here just in search of a quiet holiday. There is no bustle usual for beaches here, and the air smells of pine needles and mountain flowers. Unfortunately, several years ago, a powerful fire broke out near the reservoir, and now part of the forest is turning black, as a reproach and a reminder of human frivolity.
Magnificent views open from the shores of a nameless lake. The peaks around are located in a wide amphitheater, in the foreground rises the beautiful Shaan-Kaya - "Falcon Mountain". Its rocky mirror with a significant negative slope (by the way, the largest in the former Soviet Union) constantly attracts desperate people.
Traditionally, this is a place for climbing competitions, but recently it has been chosen by paragliding enthusiasts as well. No wonder, because a jump from a cliff makes it possible to fly over 220 m in the air. Sitting on the shore of the lake, you can enjoy the spectacle of the competition of these desperate athletes.
If the plans were to spend the night on the lake near the Shaan-Kaya rock, to stand here for several days, then you definitely need to stock up on water and provisions, because it will take about an hour to walk to the nearest store. But firewood for a fire can also be found on the banks of a small reservoir, in the nearest forest.
A fire is needed here for two reasons. Firstly, the water in the reservoir is cold, after a day of swimming, warming up by the fire will be quite useful. Secondly, the nights on the lake are simply unforgettable! Stars are reflected in its pure water, surrounded by the mighty rim of the Ai-Petrinsky spurs. It seems as if you are looking at a huge frying pan, at the bottom of which sparkles of stars are scattered. If you stopped here for a couple of days, then you can make one-day radial exits to the yayla: to, towards the Swallow's Nest or the Baydarskaya Valley.
How to get to the lake?
How to get to the lake at the Shaan-Kaya rock in Crimea is interestingly described a little higher. For those who are better oriented on the map, we offer a detailed route from Yalta:
Note to the tourist
- Address: Shaan-Kaya rock, Alupka village, Crimea, Russia.
- Coordinates: 44°25′22″N (44.42282), 34°1′38″E (34.027327).
Alupka - with its park, gazebos and magnificent beaches - has long earned the fame of the pearl of Crimea. But in its vicinity there are interesting places, like a lake near the Shaan-Kaya rock: “untwisted”, little known to the general public. But it is they who deserve to be visited, leaving their unforgettable, modest and charming mark in the soul of tourists. It is quite possible that over time it will be revealed: this trace is much deeper and more significant than what is left in the memory of artsy palaces.
