Camping stoves, tent heating in winter and summer: criteria, types and methods, implementation. What is the best tent heater?
A tent of any size, going camping in winter period must be heated. It is she who will protect from the wind, blizzards, but not from the cold of the frozen ground. The smaller the tent, the more difficult it is to cope with this task. How to do this if we are talking about a single shelter? A koremat or sleeping bag will not help much. Thermal underwear, heating pads will not save either. You need to buy a special heater - this is the best solution. Heating a tent in winter requires compliance with fire safety rules. Fire resistant tents do not exist.
Safety
Spending the night in nature, in the wilderness, away from human habitation, is associated with many risks. Among them - a sharp cold snap, bad weather. It is worth thinking about how to heat the tent in winter, buy everything you need before making a mistake. When buying, you need to consider the following nuances:
— the heater must be compact;
- it is advisable to choose a hanging option so that during sleep you do not inadvertently overturn it;
- Heaters with open flames must not be used.
At first glance, it may seem that this is an extra thing that will take up space in the backpack, add weight to the luggage, and will not come in handy in the end. However, it is not. Fishermen often stay at the reservoir overnight, hunters too. If an ordinary tourist set off on a journey, he may not even think about such a trifle as a night in the cold in the wilderness, hoping for good luck, luck, and his own strength. It's important to be safe just in case. When hitchhiking, it's easy to find yourself in a quandary: spending the night in the middle of a field. If you need to get from one point to another within 12 hours, you may not have time - the road sometimes presents surprises. Do not forget about the risk of emergency situations, accidents - anything can happen. Therefore, it is better to properly prepare for the night.
Sometimes a tent is insulated or a winter one is specially bought. This is not enough, alas. A layer of thermal insulation will not save you from frost on the outer surface. Heating a winter tent is an easier task.
First heater option
Often they take a gas lamp with them on a hike, along with a tent, a tourist rug, provisions, a map of the area and utensils. It is designed for lighting, but also copes with such a task as heating. For a small tent, its warmth is enough.
The power of a gas lamp is about one kilowatt - this is enough to heat the tent. There is a risk that the gas will freeze in severe frost. However, the lamp and gas are quite expensive. These are significant shortcomings, so you need to take your time in making a decision, consider other options.
Second suitable heat source
Paraffin is a substitute for wax in candles because it is relatively resistant to melting. The substance was discovered by Karl Reichenbach in 1830. The discovery caused a resonance in the public, the substance was used in the economy and industry. With this heat source, you can also heat the tent. All you need is a lamp in which you can put candles, fix them and close the fire with a partition, isolating the flame. Heating a tent with candles without a protective case of a lamp is a risky, life-threatening undertaking. It is more rational to remake any suitable body for paraffin candles. One candle gives an average of 40 kilowatts, so you need at least two pieces for a single tent.
Third option
On sale you can find a kerosene wick lamp. Heating a winter tent with its help is a simple task. It is this version of heaters that travelers most often choose, because the cost of kerosene is low, the lamp weighs little, and it has sufficient power. There are no other options yet, so you need to choose the best method available. The main thing is not to freeze in a dream, to have a good rest, in warmth and to protect things from accidental fire.
Guess all of us have been in the off-season and winter hikes when at night, lying in a tent, only two questions are of concern: “Why is it so cold?” and “When will the morning come?” This situation is also possible in summer trips at high-altitude overnight stays. But a tourist is an inventive person and does not like to freeze, and therefore obvious and not very ways to keep warm in a tent began to appear. First, let's figure out when it's warm for us: 1 . In the sun or around a campfire. In this case, we are warmed by a third-party heat source. 2 . When we are wrapped up in warm clothes, a down jacket, a sleeping bag. In this case, thanks to good thermal insulation, we keep our own heat. It is on these two concepts (saving own heat and receiving heat from an external source) and on their combination that the methods of warming in a tent are built: Feet in backpack. After a cold snap, the limbs begin to freeze first. There's an easy way to prevent your feet from freezing - stuff them in an empty backpack. This will add an extra layer of thermal insulation and keep you much warmer. Fleece liner. During preparation, analyze the future region of the trip, if cold overnight stays are possible, and you are not sure about your sleeping bag, buy a fleece liner. The thing is not expensive, light and at the same time very warm. thermal underwear. A lot has already been written about thermal underwear, I will simply say - it should be. The only thing is that for sleep it is better to buy thermal underwear made from natural fibers, and not synthetics. Heating pad in the sleeping bag. The simplest heating pad on a hike is a bottle of hot water. If you are very cold, maybe two. They will keep you warm and the sleeping bag will keep you warm. Should be enough for the night. If the bottle cools down earlier, just pull it out of the sleeping bag. Sometimes a stone heated in a fire and wrapped in a cloth is used as a heating pad. The main thing is that it should not be too hot. Stitching, quilting, twine. This is a favorite way for young people. Two sleeping bags are fastened into one, where both tourists climb and warm one of them with their warmth! A very efficient way. In addition, it is also pleasant if you sleep with an individual of the opposite sex)) Sparka raises the comfort temperature by 7-10%. Tent heating. If you have a stove, candles or dry alcohol, you can heat the tent with their help. At the same time, be as careful as possible, because the tent burns down in a matter of seconds. In general, the presence of open flames in the tent is prohibited. But what can't you do when it's cold.. You can still warm the tent with a hot stone. We take a stone heated in a fire, put it in an iron bowl and carry it to the tent. A place should already be prepared in the tent - things have been removed, flooring from boards has been laid out at the bottom, because when the bowl gets very hot, it may well melt the carimate and the bottom of the tent. Toilet paper. A friend of mine took three rolls of toilet paper on a camping trip and wrapped himself in it from head to toe every night. Says - helps, he did not try. The main disadvantage is that by morning the paper turns into crumbs and it takes a long time to clean things from it. We have warm nights!
I think you have had to freeze at night in a tent more than once. Nature is unpredictable and, probably, any tourist has found himself in a situation where you cannot fall asleep from the cold or wake up in the middle of the night, trembling all over in your sleeping bag. I've put together 15 tips to help you stay warm in your tent.
Warming with moss and spruce branches
If there are fears that the upcoming night will be especially cold, then it makes sense to insulate the bottom of the tent. Before laying out dry (!) moss or spruce branches on the prepared site. Preferably insulate the places where the torso will be located.
Insulation
It is very important to isolate yourself from the cold and moisture coming from the ground. In cold weather, use a thicker mat or an inflatable mat. You can additionally spread extra clothes on the rug to better insulate the floor.
Warm sleeping bag
Shake your sleeping bag
No matter what type of filling your sleeping bag has, it will be in a compressed state after unpacking. Shake it well, fluffing it like a pillow with sharp movements. This will spread and evenly distribute the filler inside the sleeping bag.
Fleece liner
For emergencies, you can purchase a fleece liner for your sleeping bag. This is a fleece bag that is inserted into the sleeping bag for extra insulation.
Warming up before bed
Warm up your body before bed. Simple exercises will help you disperse the blood and warm the body. Do a few jumps and push-ups near the tent, just be careful not to start sweating, otherwise you will definitely freeze at night. If you climb into your sleeping bag when you're cold, chances are you won't be able to warm up.
Refueling the body
If it's going to be a cold night, don't forget to have a snack before bed. The stomach generates heat during work. It is advisable to eat something hot. Give preference to fatty foods, such foods take longer to digest. On the contrary, it is better to refuse sweets and caffeine, they stimulate the narrowing of blood vessels. Going to bed hungry increases the risk of freezing.
Water balance
The body must have enough water to keep warm. Drink water for an hour or two before bed. But do not overdo it, otherwise you will often have to run to the toilet at night. If nature calls in the middle of the night, you need to get up and go. By resisting, you will be even more cold. Drinking plenty of water before bed can serve as a natural wake-up call.
Cloth
Change as many clothes as possible. What you've been wearing all day is likely to be a bit damp and make you sleepy. If you do not have the opportunity to change clothes, try to heat and dry your clothes by the fire. An excellent solution would be a set of thermal underwear, it not only warms, but also removes moisture from the skin.
Do not put on all the clothes you have at once, you risk sweating and freezing all night later. It is better to dress lighter at first, and prepare additional things and put them on the side. If you get cold, you can quickly put them on.
Wear a hat
We usually lose most of the heat in a tent through our heads. Therefore, always take a hat when hiking. It perfectly protects from the cold during overnight stays.
Warm socks
If your feet are cold, carry a special pair of fleece or wool socks with you. An indispensable thing on a hike! Wear them only for sleeping before climbing into your sleeping bag.
Feet in backpack
Being in a sleeping bag, you can additionally warm your lower limbs by putting them in an empty backpack. Sleeping in this position may not be very comfortable, but your legs will receive an additional layer of thermal insulation.
Heating pad in the sleeping bag
To maintain the temperature in a sleeping bag, many use catalytic or chemical disposable heating pads.
Alternatively, you can heat water in a cauldron, pour it into a bottle and wrap it in a T-shirt. You should put this device in your sleeping bag. It is unlikely that the water will warm all night, but it will definitely be enough for a couple of hours of warm sleep. When the bottle is completely cool, it is best to remove it from the sleeping bag. In a cold state, it is not the bottle that will warm you, but you warm it.
Don't put your nose in the bag
The mouth and nose should be kept outside the sleeping bag. The heat emanating from the breath is deceptive! By breathing inside the sleeping bag, you will make the clothes and the bag itself damp. A well-designed “cocoon” sleeping bag will allow you to zip up so that only your nose and mouth remain outside 😉
Lie tighter
It is easier to warm up in a tent in a company than alone. Hug close to each other so as not to freeze on a cold night.
There are sleeping bags that are zipped together to form one double bag. Thus, you can raise the temperature by 7-10 °. This option is suitable for a couple who likes to sleep snuggling up to each other. If you move in different directions, then an air space will form between you and it will be even colder.
I don’t even consider options for heating the air in a tent with an open fire or red-hot bricks, as some do. Such methods are unacceptable for me.
I hope you remember what to do if it's cold in the tent. Maybe you have something to add? I'm waiting in the comments!
I suggest you watch a funny cartoon in which, in all seriousness, a very interesting way to heat the air in a tent is described:
Good day friends! This review will focus on heating in a tent in the winter. I posted a blog post - I'm looking for an answer, since the review will be educational in particular for me. At the end of the post, I will formulate questions that interest me.
The frosty season is coming, which cannot please nature lovers, fishermen, tourists, athletes and just active people. Whatever category you belong to, I need your experience, if any, not by hearsay, experience in heating a tent in winter. More precisely, the temperature range is 15-20 Celsius overboard.
Specific conditions for the use of heating devices are a dome tent, without a bottom (such are used for fishing). Outside, the skirt is covered with snow. There is spruce branches on the floor, a layer of 20 centimeters. On top of the spruce branches there is an awning tarpaulin, sometimes foam (depending on whether there will be spruce branches at the place of spending the night or not and according to the weather ....) and a good sleeping bag cocoon - comfort -15 Celsius.
The problem is that during my nights in the forest I used several ways to heat the tent. And not one suits me absolutely. You still freeze, then you watch so as not to burn, then you ventilate ... You end up not getting enough sleep. And I would like a serene sleep for 360 minutes like that ... To be cheerful and rested in the morning.
I had to sleep near Nodia a couple of times, but it's not convenient to have to spin like a carcass on a spit. He heated one side, cooled four ... This is not rest, this is so as not to freeze!
And so the ways:
- gas hob
Pros.
It is convenient because you can cook on it in a tent and kicking it in a dream is difficult to turn it over. And that's it!
Minuses.
There is a very high consumption of cans, if you use it for heating, you need to have cans only of high quality for low temperatures, and they are expensive. As a result, using expensive raw materials, we still freeze, we have to wake up to control combustion or change the cylinder.
-Candles.
Pros.
Cheap. It's not hard to carry.
Minuses.
Cold.
(You always have to watch as if you didn’t turn over when you tossed and turned, slept so once.)
- Kerosene lamp.
Pros.
Light + Heating is not bad (C grade).
Minuses.
Always ventilate! Constant control so as not to overturn in a dream.
- Gas heater.
Pros.
You can cook on it, you can dry clothes on it. I had one (and swam away), we constantly burned it while fishing, but since we went either on snowmobiles or in a car, we carried a propane tank with us.
The cylinder was enough for a very long time (for 2-3 fishing trips for sure). The only source of heating that moderately dries the air and does not allow condensation (in the literal sense of the word) to fall out in the form of snow inside the tent (whoever slept knows, such small snow dandruff is everywhere inside the tent in the morning). Warm, comfortable, does not stink, the sleeping bag even sometimes had to be unfastened.
Minuses.
Gas consumption like a tile. I described this disadvantage. Carrying propane up the hill is not an option.
- Potbelly stove.
In ancient times, one had to sleep in a combined-arms soldier's tent for a platoon. One potbelly stove on moderate burning heated the tent with a bang. (Firewood is prepared, the orderly monitors the stoves).
Pros.
Like indoors.
Minuses.
As in the case of a propane tank (weight, volume ...)
- Just wrap up.
Pros.
With good thermal underwear and a quality sleeping bag (sleeping system), there are no worries to get enough sleep.
Minuses.
Getting up in the morning, getting out is disgusting! Crawling out to the toilet is disgusting. Everything cold in the tent is dandruff everywhere, to drink tea you need to kindle a fire or a tile inside the tent, everything is damp and frozen ... brrr ... I had such a morning several times when, spitting on everything, I extinguished candles, stoves, tiles to sleep peacefully.
I am skeptical about salt heaters, catalytic heaters in a sleeping bag (it will warm only a separate part of the body, not for long), bottles of boiling water, I have not tried heated stones in a tent, but I need a cobblestone the size of a head, there are none in our forest. And open sources of fire (candles, Lebedev's lights ...., this is not safe). There is a sound idea for candles, but where to find such a chandelier?
To date, I do not have the best option. Not in my backpack, not in my head. Before asking a question, I say right away that I understand that there is no ideal means of heating. But there is hope.
I would like to purchase at a reasonable price so that I don’t have to worry about a fire in a tent, so as not to suffocate, so that the weight is not large, so that a combustible consumable is available, not expensive and available in stores (and not by online order). And the main thing is that it should really be warm (not like in a bathhouse, but so that steam from the mouth does not pour out in clubs inside the tent.) Someone may know something like that, in extreme cases I am ready to sacrifice some of the benefits I have listed.
???
And may the force be with you!
This article will discuss the heating of the tent in the warm season. For negative temperatures, the methods described below will be ineffective. But for summer or early autumn, when the air warms up well during the day, and at night it can freeze a little and the temperature drops to +5 +10, these simple methods will be an excellent option.
This article only shows methods for which there is no need to use additional equipment that you need to carry with you.
Using hot stones to heat the tent
The easiest way to increase the temperature in the tent is to use hot stones in a fire.
You can find stones almost everywhere. If the stones are small, then several stones can be used. If there are large stones, then one will be enough.
The stone must be found the size of a volleyball. We put it in a fire, wait for it to warm up to a high temperature. We extract it. We wrap it in several layers with foil so that it retains heat longer and gives it more evenly.
In the tent at the bottom in the place where it is planned to install this "heater", we put a board or several branches. They will act as thermal insulation so that the heater does not damage the bottom of the tent. We put a metal pot on top of the branches or board. And already on top of the pot we put a heated stone.
pros: simple design, long heat dissipation.
Minuses: danger of burning the tent or burning yourself.
Using hot water to heat the tent
This method is very similar to the previous one. Only metal dishes with water will be used as a heating element.
The principle is exactly the same. Heat up a kettle or pot of water. We cover with a lid. And we put in a tent on a board or pre-prepared sticks. You can also cover the pot with rags so that it gives off heat longer. But in this case, the recoil temperature will decrease.
This heater will work for 3-4 hours.
It makes sense to use this method only if there were no stones in the district at all. If there are stones, it is better to use them than water.
pros: Simple design
Minuses: Poor heat dissipation, risk of spilling water, risk of scalding.
We put up a tent on the site of a burned-out fire
One of the oldest and simplest ways to heat a tent can be considered the method of using a former fire pit for this purpose.
In this case, it is necessary to build a fire where the accommodation will be located. At this time, the tent can be set up a little to the side.
A hole is dug with a shallow depth, but a large area comparable to the area of the bottom of the tent. Firewood is burned directly in this pit over the entire area for as long as possible.
When the fire burns out, the remains of the coals are thrown over with earth or sand. Grass is laid on top. A tent is already being set up on top of the grass.
This method of heating will work all night.
pros: Excellent heat dissipation, no danger of burning or melting the tent.
