October 31st is Nevada State Day in the United States. Today we will talk about the main attractions of this region, which should not be overlooked while traveling.
An absolutely unearthly sight, rather inherent in the Martian landscapes, as science fiction films show them, is located in the northwestern part of Nevada. The Black Rock Desert, which is a salt marsh, is part of the endorheic Great Basin. It was in its rocks in 1916 that a small geothermal geyser source was accidentally punched while drilling a well for a well. Since 1964, boiling jets of water rushing to the surface of the earth began to create this alien landscape due to the dissolution of minerals, which has become one of the most photogenic attractions in the state. The geyser does not yet exceed the height of an adult, but continues to grow - today it has almost reached one and a half meters in height. Fly got its unusual coloration due to algae, minerals and cyanobacteria. Owners of a private rancher in Washoe County have repeatedly been offered to sell the site, opening up access to a beautiful attraction, but so far to no avail. To take a close-up photo of the geyser, you have to get permission in advance to inspect it from the owners or view it from behind a high fence with a modern security system that surrounds this area. But even such difficulties do not stop connoisseurs of beauty - many curious tourists manage to capture in the pictures the incredible colors of Fly, constantly spewing three hot water jets into the air.
On the border with the state of Arizona is a mega-structure that has taken a place in the National Register historical sites USA. The Hoover Dam was built during the difficult times of the Great Depression for America to provide water from the mighty Colorado River to the inhabitants of the states located near it. The idea of construction belonged to US Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover, after whom the dam was named. The construction of a grandiose structure that blocks the river took six contractors five years. An interesting fact from the history of the dam: it was here that protective helmets were first used during construction. Since its construction, the Hoover Dam has become a national landmark in the United States. Its height of 221 meters, even after almost 80 years, makes the dam the tallest structure of its kind in the Western Hemisphere of the Earth, and 17 generators producing four billion kilowatts of energy annually - also one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in the country. The government does not have to spend significant funds on maintaining the dam - it almost completely pays off due to the 9 million tourists visiting this place per year. So observation deck The dam offers excellent views of the largest man-made lake in America, Lake Mead, which holds up to ten trillion gallons of water.
The main pedestrian street of Las Vegas, where the world-famous casino hotels Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Nugget, Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, Binion's Horseshoe are located. Fremont Street originated in the oldest part of Vegas, Downtown, in 1905 and was named after Fremont's famous inventor, the Great Pathfinder, who crossed the Mojave Desert in 1944. The symbol of Fremont Street and the star of the television screen - a neon figure of a cowboy waving his hand in greeting to the guests of Vegas, appeared here in 1951. Interesting Facts from the history of Fremont Street: in 1907, the first telephone in the city appeared here, in 1931, the first gambling license was issued and the only traffic light at that time was installed. The following year, Vegas' first air-conditioning and elevator were installed at the Apache Hotel, and in 1994, cars were banned from the street. In 1995, to regain the popularity lost due to the emergence of new-fangled casinos, a huge Fremont Street Experience dome screen was installed on it. A native of Las Vegas, Mary Kozlowski, came up with the idea of holding short light shows on its inside, turned towards the audience, for example, the broadcast of famous card games. In 1996, the Neon Museum was opened on Fremont Street, a kind of cemetery for luminous signs of obsolete casinos, where more than 150 unique exhibits found their last refuge.
In the northeast of the town of Reno, at an altitude of more than 1100 meters above sea level, there is a warm Pyramid Lake, a favorite place for fishermen and ecotourists. Pyramid Lake, so named because of the limestone rock that rises in the middle of the lake and looks like a pyramid, is located on the territory of the Northern Paiute reservation and is sacred to them. Near the lake is the Northern Nevada Indian Museum. The water of the lake is quite salty, and therefore many species of fish live here. For example, only here is found the rare kui-ui fish, which has long been on the verge of extinction. Fishing lovers are attracted here like a magnet - few people leave without a rich catch. And on the shore of the lake, petroglyphs were discovered: a series of rhombuses and combs, consisting of parallel lines. According to the data collected by scientists, their age is at least ten thousand years and forces us to reconsider the traditional versions that at that time the inhabitants of this territory could not create such abstractions.
For almost thirty years, in late August - early September of each year, tens of thousands of creative people from all over the world have been gathering in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, to take part in a unique action. The history of the festival goes back to 1986, when a group of friends gathered on the beach in San Francisco with the goal of burning an effigy of a man and thus saying goodbye to the old life and habits. With each subsequent year, the number of participants in the ritual increased, and so it continued until the authorities banned this event, forcing him to move to the Nevada desert. Freaks come here from all over the world to touch freedom, unusual art and meet other bright individuals. The festival strikes with a special atmosphere: money is not in use here. Anything you can't take with you is given away for free in bars on wheels or campgrounds. Nobody is greedy - if a Wi-Fi point is created, then it is open to everyone, if coffee is brewed - it will also be enough for everyone. Burning man is an ideal socialist world, created, oddly enough, in the camp of a capitalist enemy. In addition, it is filled with colorful decorations: bright and unusual costumes, surreal wooden structures that burn in the evenings in a bright flame to the enthusiastic cries of guests and incendiary music.
The state of Nevada in America is considered the driest state in the United States. Certainly the most famous and most Big City this region - Las Vegas. But this is not the only attraction of the state - it is distinguished by its unique nature, one might even say unearthly, the presence of canyons, deserts and geysers. In addition, traveling around the district, you can feel like a western hero. In this article, I will try to briefly talk about amazing places, which can be seen only by visiting the state of Nevada.
A very famous hotel in the world, it has a unique interior, as well as a memorable neon sign. On the territory you can visit a casino, a restaurant and enjoy the views of beautiful landscapes. The decor of the hotel is made in a cowboy style, which is very typical for these places. Pioneer Inn & Gambling Hall is located in Laughlin. Every year it is visited by many tourists, so I advise you to book rooms in advance.
Hoover Platinum
This structure is one of the greatest buildings of the 20th century and the largest dam on Earth. It took 20,000 people and years of hard work to build the platinum. Many travelers are attracted by this place with its grandeur. The dam blocks the Colorado River in Black Canyon and provides water to Southern California. Platinum got its name in honor of the author of the project to create it - Herbert Hoover.
Red Rock Canyon
Red Rock Canyon is a very ancient place, 600 million years ago it was under the water of the ocean. After that, 250 million years ago, the earth began to rise, and rocks of salt and gypsum formed above the water. And an unusual red tint is given by oxidation, as a result of the displacement of rocks from the ocean floor, hence the name. The reserve is located at a distance of about 25 km from Las Vegas and stretches in length for several more kilometers. In order to take a closer look at the canyon, a road was laid between the rocks. Therefore, I recommend, having discarded all doubts, rent a car and go on an unforgettable journey through Red Rock Canyon.
El Dorado Canyon
This legendary place is also located near Las Vegas. During the era of the gold rush in America, the coordinates of the canyon were classified, this gave rise to many rumors and legends. Everyone thought that only the lucky ones could find their way to El Dorado. In the modern world, visiting this mythical place is not difficult.
You will have the opportunity to listen to fascinating stories about bandits and brave cowboys, visit gold mines, and plunge into the atmosphere of the Wild West.
Valley of Fire
This is one of the oldest parks in Nevada. The reserve is located an hour's drive from Las Vegas, and its area reaches 140 square meters. km. The magnificent red rocks of this valley were formed tens of millions of years ago. In the bright light of the sun, looking at the park, you will see a beautiful sight.
Depending on the shape and location of the rock, the color palette expands, starting from light yellow, reaching red-brown. Traveling through the Valley of Fire and admiring the unique rock formations, someone may be lucky enough to see rock art Indian tribes who lived in these places in antiquity. No one leaves the valley without a sense of spirituality from touching the history of the Earth.
Muhi Geyser
The beauty of the Black Desert of Nevada does not end with unearthly landscapes - there are plains where geysers and geothermal springs are located.
The human hand was applied to the formation of this geyser. It is located on the territory of a private ranch, whose owner once wanted to drill a well and stumbled upon hot springs. After some time, the Fly Geyser becomes the most famous attraction of these places and attracts a large number of travelers.
To see the geyser at close range, each time you have to negotiate with the owner of the ranch, and this causes certain troubles for tourists. The spring has been growing for 100 years and is still growing in size. Geyser Muhi is distinguished by its beautiful color, as a result of algae, bacteria and mineral salts dissolved in the water. Watching the source, you can even see a small fish that lives in the cascading multi-colored pools around the geyser. Niagara Falls is no less impressive.
Grapevine Canyon Rock Paintings
This canyon is located near the town of Laughlin and is part of the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. On the rocks of the canyon, you can observe a lot of petroglyphs, which were painted by the ancient Indians of the Mojave tribe.
Thanks to spring water, there is a lot of vegetation in the territory of Grapevine Canyon - this creates a certain contrast with the nearby Mojave Desert. Most travelers like to hike in these places in late autumn or winter. During this period, the air temperature in the Canyon is quite high, so I advise you to stock up on a couple of bottles of mineral water.
City of Reno
Probably everyone knows about Las Vegas, I want to tell you about another incredibly amazing city, which is located in the north of Nevada, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. Often tourists refer to Reno as "The Biggest Small City in the World".
This city is also famous for having a large number of casinos. In addition, within a radius of 50 km from Reno there are more than 10 ski resorts Sierra Nevada, the wonderful beauty of Lake Tahoe, the capital of Nevada - Carson City and about fifty golf clubs. I think it's a great place to relax.
City of Reno- a little brother of gambling and dizzying Las Vegas. These two cities are considered the center international tourism in Nevada (USA). Already at the airport of the city of Reno, all arriving tourists are met by slot machines, and you immediately understand that you have arrived in the city of holidays, festivals and casinos. Reno is called the biggest small city in the world! Little is known about Reno and few travelers go here for another dose of tourist adventure. And very in vain! Reno is a city of entertainment, carnivals, bright slot machines and freedom! Reno is a real sin city!
It is immediately worth noting that the city is not full of cultural or historical attractions. This is a city in the middle of the desert, so the local authorities decided to make Reno an entertainment city in order to somehow attract tourists and finance, respectively. The legalization of the gambling business has made Reno the second Las Vegas! Therefore, the casino is at every turn. An interesting fact is that all hotels, restaurants or cafes are made at the casino. So that a person does not once again miss the opportunity, at lunch or sipping a soft drink in a bar, sink a couple of hundred dollars on slot machines.
But casinos are not the only way to attract tourists and finances to the city budget. Reno has been hailed as the "City of Festivals". Up to 120 such events take place here a year: festivals of dance, street food, bowling, ukulele festivals or extreme species sports, river festival, etc. The brightest, but also the most expensive event of the year is a festival in the middle of the desert Burning Man. For eight days of the festival, the Black Rock Desert turns into a kind of platform where anyone can demonstrate their fantastic installations, party to their favorite music, ride their own mutant cars, wear incredible costumes and just feel free! The culmination of the festival is the burning of a huge statue of a wooden man. An exciting and simply crazy event!
But not only gambling and festivals attract tourists to Reno. Just an hour drive - and you have a choice of 18 (!) ski resorts, more than 50 elite golf clubs, lakes, mountains and other picturesque landscapes. From Reno, it is very convenient to get to the state capital, the city of Carson City (50 km from Reno). About 350 km separate Reno from San Francisco, so the city is a great option for a weekend getaway. Just half an hour's drive separates Reno from the neighboring town of Virginia City - the real Wild West. In Reno, as well as in Las Vegas, almost at every turn there is a Wedding Chapel - places for quick registration of marriages. Come in, show any document and get married to health!
Bright signs, round-the-clock casinos, the spirit of freedom and the Wild West fascinate tourists. And for those who don't like the ultra-fast pace of life of the "big brother" of Las Vegas, a direct road to Reno. Reno, in this endless series of flickering lights, makes it possible to stop and breathe deeply, admire the natural beauties of Nevada and just enjoy the moment!
Is there the largest small city in the world, and where is it located? It turns out that this is the name of the city of Reno, located in the northwestern state of Nevada, near the border with California. Once, during our trip to the Yellowstone supervolcano () , we happened to spend one day of our lives in this town, which at one time was even more famous for its casinos than Las Vegas. Welcome to Reno!
1. So, the city of Reno lay on our stretch of path between the relict Lake Tahoe and Salt Lake City, the venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics. We woke up in a tent on the banks of the Tahoe and immediately began to pack up. The three of us traveled, with our Japanese friend Yuki, who took this photo as a keepsake.
2. It was like this: the sky, cones and pines ... In the Tahoe area, there is quite a peaceful wildlife.
3. We were standing in a place called Emerald Bay. Again, lake, pines and mountains.
4. But, just an hour and a half later, we were already entering Reno, the city is quite unusual and contrast. On the one hand, this is a complete periphery: even in the desert state of Nevada, the town is only the fourth largest in terms of population. About 220 thousand people live here. On the other hand, this place is known for its casinos, and if not all over the world, then all over America for sure.
5. In addition, the city is located on the border between a vast desert and mountains covered with an ancient pine forest. Judging by the heat, on this June day, the desert won. Perhaps for this reason, the streets were mostly deserted as well.
6. Most of the inhabitants fled to rest in a rather nice green park, located on an island in the middle of a river called Truckee River. On this day, the Reno River Fest was held here, where water sports, poker players, local artists and cowboys mixed up. The rhythm of the event was set by successive jazzmen.
7. Day by the river. American hard workers listen to jazz. Full relax.
8. In general, there were quite a lot of colorful local residents in the park, like this elderly woman remembering the entire 20th century.
9. One of the most unusual eventsty at the festival was a championship indivingdi... dogs - SPLASH DOGS.
10. The rules of the competition are quite simple: dogs perform with their owners, who throw special toys into the water in the form of a delicious bone or duck. There are foot markings along the pool.
11. The winner is the dog that jumped into the water to the maximum length.
12. These three won (if we count the duck as a member of the team).
13. Dog Ba ddi flew an incredible 26 feet. It's about 8 meters. For comparison, let's say that the current world record for long jump among people is 8 meters and 95 cm. It was set back in 1991 by American Michael Powell.
14. You can get to the island park by crossing these bridges. Dogs and people who did not jump into the pool rested by the river.
15.
16. Many still jumped into the river.
17. By the way, the current in the river truckee pretty strong. People had fun rafting on air mattresses.
18. Rafted on inflatable circles.
19. Rafted on paddle boards and kayaks.
20. They even rafted on surfboards, using the rapids of the river instead of a wave and catching a rope on a tree. Some kind of eternal thrill!
21. Leaving the island, we moved on to walk around the city. Up the river we found a pond where many different birds live.
22. A rather cool urban development has begun behind the pond. Lots of beautiful graffiti.
23. Considering that this is not New York or San Francisco, the ideas and the quality of the work were impressive.
24. Pretty cool architecture has begun.
25. Almost a piece of Chicago in Nevada.
26. Deserted streets, old brick walls, huge fire escapes.
27. It was time for lunch and we began to look for a place to eat.
28. There was such a nice courtyard with pleasant cafes.
29. It was desert hot and we decided to drink cold beer at the same time.
30. In general, this area was very stylish. And vintage. The real America of the 20th century.
31. Although sometimes the unity of style is cut through by ultra-modern objects and forms. This white thing on the roof was spinning in the wind. Not sure, but maybe it generates electricity.
32. But this character, in some strange way, all the time turned out to be in our way. At the same time, most often he was the only person on the street.
33. After lunch, we decided to leave the "Chicago" area and went to downtown Reno - the central part, where various casinos are located.
34. A goodbye photo.
35. The main attraction of Reno is this luminous arch with the name of the city, built in the 80s and located on Virginia street. In addition to the name of the city, the arch is inscribed with the city's iconic motto: "The biggest small city in the world." In general, this is the third generation of the arch, and the very first version was built back in 1926 on the occasion of a major exhibition held here. At the same time, a competition was announced to create a motto, and the winner received a fairly large prize: $100.
36. The main attraction of the city are its many old casinos. The fact is that until the 60s of the 20th century, the city of Reno was considered the gaming capital of America. Huge casinos formed the basis of the city's economy, and famous players from all over the world came to play here. But the rapid growth of the Las Vegas gaming industry and the permission to open casinos on numerous Indian reservations sent Reno's glory into a sweet past.
37. Many famous casinos have been demolished or converted into residential buildings. These are the talking photos we managed to take while walking around the downtown.
38. Today, Reno's remaining gaming industry still makes up a significant portion of the city's economy. And even new big casinos are popping up. As it seemed to us, unlike Las Vegas, where you can't get through the crowd of tourists from all over the world on the street, mostly Americans come to Reno to play, and Americans with conservative views. For example, in one of the casinos we saw about 200 cowboys in blue jeans and huge hats at once. This is probably why there are shops with such shop windows on the streets. 25% discount on all saddles. It's tempting.
39. It was getting dark, and walking between the casinos, we returned to the famous arch, which lit its alluring lights. Interestingly, 2079 light bulbs were used in the arch and a few years ago they were all replaced with super energy-efficient diode lamps consuming only 2 watts each.
40. Speaking of light bulbs - there are a lot of them in Reno. The further we walked through the streets of Reno, the more lights flashed around. Huge casinos, still in operation, lit the lights, as if inviting us on a journey into the past of this unusual town. First, the lights of the gigantic Silver Legacy (in the background), built in 1995, came on. Then Eldorado, which opened in 1973.
41. Opposite them, Club Cal Neva flared up, which started working here back in 1962.
42. The neon lights of the 60s took over and we could not resist - we went to a local bar to try a few koteils.
43. As we say: Cheers!
44. When we left the bar, it was already completely dark and we decided to go to our motel. On the way, we picked up our Japanese friend Yuki, who was exploring Reno on his own after lunch.
45. The carriage flew into the fog Our car flew between the neon flashes of the past. Sometimes we just stopped and stood for a few minutes in silence.
46. In front of our motel, laughing giant casino clown CIRCUS, whose life began in 1957.
47. Yes, in fact, our random motel itself is already half erased from the present. From the former chic, only the name remains.
48. By the way, all casinos work around the clock and even in the middle of the night there are quite a lot of people.
49. Well, we went to bed. The next day we had to cross almost the entire state of Nevada, and this is hundreds of kilometers through the desert. Farewell to the fires of the greatest small town in the world!
P.S.: Read our articles about other days from this unusual trip.
"The largest of the small cities in the world" - under such a touching definition of Reno, located in the state of Nevada next to mountain range Sierra Nevada, known to tourists and residents of America. Nevada seems deserted, hot and dry, but its cities are famous for the fact that their vibrant life is the exact opposite of the state's climate. There is so much going on in "big little" Reno that it would be enough for two more big cities.
The turbulent history of Reno began in the middle of the 19th century, when deposits of gold and silver were discovered in the area. Nevada is still the world's third largest gold producer after South Africa and Australia. Then, when the state legalized gambling, the town became the capital of the casino - however, by our time, this status has ceded to Las Vegas. But it cannot be said that Reno has lost much ground: casinos such as Silver Legacy, Peppermill, a branch of the network of gambling houses Harrah's, Circus Circus, Eldorado or Atlantis, provide a large influx of tourists to the city.
Many people get stuck in these establishments for a long time, because a casino is not only a place where you hit the jackpot or lose everything: you can eat delicious food (often casinos are famous not only for their interiors, but also for their special cuisine with specialties), drink and even swim in the pool, dance, watch a movie or go shopping - casino hotels like the Nugget or the Grand Sierra Resort are distinguished by a kind of "multi-station".
In addition to the never-ending gambling, Reno hosts a variety of events: the Hot August Nights vintage car festival, biker races, rodeos, hot air balloon races, massive bowling tournaments, multi-day flying competitions, and the month-long Artown Art Festival with exhibitions , concerts, performances, in which world famous celebrities take part.
The Burning Man festival, which takes place in the desert next to Reno, lasts only a week, but then the stories about it last for a whole year, and the memories for a lifetime. For the sake of the festival, a special city is created near Reno, Black Rock City, which, on the one hand, functions like a real city with all municipal services and other things, and on the other hand, it is a territory of freedom. All sorts of shows, dances, musical performances, sculptures, new buildings, amazing costumes of each of the participants, paintings - all this is carried by a multi-colored whirlwind, so that later they can disappear in a whirlwind of flame: everything that is created at the festival is burned on the last day so as not to leave there is no trace behind you in the desert.
Of those sights of Reno that do not disappear anywhere and do not depend on calendar dates, one can note the Victorian Square, on which casinos, shops, cinemas are concentrated; the Central City Library - an architectural marvel with a park inside; Idlewild and Wingfield parks, where you can not only walk or have a picnic, but also do outdoor activities. Tourists are attracted by the Nevada Museum of Art and the National Automobile Museum with vintage cars, many of which either belonged to famous people or are considered celebrities themselves. Natural attractions include Pyramid and Tahoe lakes and the Truckee River, which attract the entire population of the city on hot days.
