Almost two years have passed since the release of the album "Gorgorod" and the cult track "City Under the Sole", and discussions regarding the content of the songs and the image of the artist himself do not stop. Numerous references to images and quotes sound not only in the Internet environment, but also from rap battle sites, starting with the phrase ST: “My irony of fate is your“ City under the sole ”, and ending with a lot of punches - rhyming biting battle lines - Glory CPSU to Oxy himself and his work.
The last rap battle between Oksimiron and Purulent (aka Slava CPSU, Valentin Dyadka, ButerBrodsky...) gained more than 3 million views in the first night after publication. For the first time in the history of rap competitions, the headlines of all the main Russian (and some foreign) media were literally torn from the words about Oksimiron's "historic defeat" and the promotion of the Russian rap subculture to the new level. What was previously known only among the youth (and even then, by no means to everyone), suddenly became known to almost every person who somehow tries to “be in the know”.
From the first minutes of the 1st round against Oksimiron, Slava KPSS positioned itself as a gravedigger of the “pseudo-king of Russian rap” (“You died as a creator, and you do not deserve the fame of a cult rap singer”; “Your Oxxxy is an inflated figure, like a glass cockerel”) and consistently discredited - in his usual "anti-hype" style, aimed at fighting against PR and popular MCs, the very fact of the confrontation between the performers as a duel between the "king and the jester". In the bottom line, the battle gave rise not only to discussions on Ekho Moskvy with an analysis of “rap poetry” from a modern journalist and poet Dmitry Bykov, another interview with Yuri Dud with a recent winner, and a lot of memes with the phrase: “Easy, easy. Reel current. Sink about it, ”but also the desire to comprehend the reasons for the defeat of Oksimiron.
In order to evaluate the outcome of this or that confrontation with an unexpected result - whether it be a military battle, a football match or a rap battle - it is necessary, without taking into account external factors, to evaluate only one thing: was the loser really obviously weaker, and the one who won - head and shoulders stronger? And analyze either the personality of the winner, who confirmed his class (Glory to the CPSU, a true battle performer), or the personality of the opponent. On this moment Quite a lot has been said about Purulent and his style of conducting a battle, his dubious nihilistic-postmodernist creativity. Obviously, it is worth looking at the outcome of the battle from the other side - the side of Oksimiron - and discerning the underlying causes of his fiasco.
Why did I lose? Because, as in the previous battles, I went into lyrical digressions, which I really enjoy writing, in contrast to the endless “setup-punch, setup-punch”. Perhaps I've been too fixated in my life on the fact that I once influenced battle rap - and instead I myself should learn from the battle players, whose world has since grown into something different and independent.
So Oksimiron wrote on Instagram, explaining the outcome of the battle. In fact, this rebuke is a kind of return and an allusion to the well-known lines of the “City under the sole”. Let's turn to the source text again, so that, after analyzing the lines, we can finally understand why Oksimiron is "obsessed" with his leading role in the world of battle performers.
First verse
From the very beginning of the first verse, the listener finds himself on the move and sets off on a journey with Oksimiron and his troupe: he literally "hacks" his soul with a small crowbar - a crowbar - and hurries to tell the world his views. The word "chess" in this context can be perceived as a large number of concerts in a short period of time - that's why the entire "van is full of boxes of merchandise", that is, branded paraphernalia. Nevertheless, in addition to the concert, the average performer - the modern "minstrel" (the poet-musician of the Middle Ages) - has, in general, only two ways: to perform for free at "kvartirniks" or "entertain the people" at corporate parties. But the heart, of course, wants more. Eager to prove that Oxy and his team are "the first Cro-Magnons", primitive people who became "homo sapiens" (there follows a pun: Oxy "protrudes" strongly and successfully, like the jaw of an ancient man Pithecanthropus "protrudes" from his mouth), - and beats even stronger, so even valocordin does not help.
Returning to Russia from England after receiving an Oxford diploma, appearing on the Hip-Hop.ru site and participating in the creation of the Versus project itself, Oksimiron set about changing the entire rap culture in Russia from focusing on more thoughtful, “complex” texts. They need to be comprehended, tracing numerous references to literary works, philosophical concepts and musical movements. An idea instead of "pop". Subtle lyrics instead of sugary "vanilla". Should we be surprised at Oxy's hidden bitterness towards other, "traditional" MC performers? “Hip-hop was not a culture of stupid people, but then people like him kicked him in the gut,” Oksimiron exclaims in a battle with ST. And, nevertheless, here Miron admits that under his influence "rap has become multi-party"; which means that in rap there could also be a “countercultural” movement that gave rise to characters like Purulent.
Having spawned Battles,

I would have enslaved all rap, but all the time on the road ...After Oksimiron actively contributed to the formation of the battle rap movement in Russia, the former "Englishman" did not go into the category of "exclusively battle MC", but remained a multidisciplinary performer, defeating opponents due to the initial high level. But from battle to battle, it became more and more difficult to win. Johnyboy was stronger than Dunya. ST was even closer to triumph. Glory to the CPSU - "purely battle MS" - won virtually dry. And quite deservedly - due to the experience and the lack of creativity that could be criticized (because it is absurd to criticize what the author ironically laughs at himself).
Gather the court, but the winners are not judged
We are the first Cro-Magnons - we made it to the people“The opponent is well done,” the performer admits in the same post. Yes, Oksimiron "made it to the people" and even after an unfortunate defeat he is ready to confirm that his opponent deservedly won. As in the time of Catherine II, it makes no sense to condemn the winners - no matter how they achieved their victory.
Chorus
In the chorus, Oksimiron expresses the idea of "the city under the soles of Gulliver", making it the leitmotif of the entire creative path ("All my rap, in short .."). In Russian rap, he feels like a person who “turned the game around”, a huge Gulliver compared to “small” in every sense, local, “home-grown” performers who, in terms of their abilities, according to the idea of the tracks, find themselves nothing more than “under the sole” of a graduate Oxford.
Second verse
In the second verse, the angle changes again: in the field of view of Oksimiron (the minivan, the travel companion remains the starting point): numerous rural landscapes and their attributes: “the ghost of Yesenin”, “the last poet of the Russian village”, crosses of churches, the smell of oil and the sounds of prayers . And at the end - the bulk of the cities of "a couple of countries", Krasnodar, Tatarstan and the capital - Moskvabad (by analogy with Ashgabat; a clear hint of an abundance of immigrants).
The semantic “stuffing” of the second verse is the idea of striving for creative models that Oksimiron sets for himself (“to belong to more than me”); inner urge to go forward, no matter what. In addition, one feels the focus not so much on the result as on the process itself, which, by the way, confirms his attitude to battles as an opportunity to speak out, a useful and interesting experience: “It’s purely to prove to yourself that one more tick, one more tick or no checkbox. As if I were ready for any options. Is it worth it in this case to judge Oxy for a lot of "lyrical digressions"? For the same 3rd round, completely dedicated to the work of Joseph Campbell's "Hero with a Thousand Faces"? In the end, the author of "Gorgorod" is not a "biorobot with a Komsomol member's forehead", not a "machine" churning out "punch lines" ... And why not use a rap battle to articulate your ideas ("It's not me who reads fast, and you listen slowly,” from a battle with ST) about the decline of reading culture in Russia; about the abundance of boring and dull primitive that flows in streams - not only from flat TV screens, but also from social networks cultivating the stereotyped texts of popular rappers?
Third verse
By the third verse, the lyrical hero was already frankly tired. The only setting is "do not collapse and do not break." Even the wonderful "bridge to Asgard" - the abode of the Scandinavian gods - ceases to be a goal, because the main thing is to be "lucky with transport", that is, the forward movement continues. On all the "parapets" of the streets are pasted "logos" - concert logos, and Oxy continues to "read out" his intricate texts as a speech therapist "smoked" with marafet (a slang term for cocaine), at the same time imagining himself as Magomed - a prophet sent by Allah in the Islamic religion - and satanic idol-deity Bafamet.
“There are soundtracks to the journey in the deck” - in this line, obviously, there is a reference-analogy to a tape recorder-prefix (from the English “tape deck”) or the resonating surface of musical instruments.
I am a star? Give a warm blanket and a hood
Wipe your ass with napkins - and that's it, mark "Good"Oksimiron does not consider himself a star? Or does he still think? “F*cking you are narcissistic, bro,” says Purulent at the beginning of the 3rd round. Yes, one cannot but agree that Oxy is characterized by narcissism, increased demands on others. But exactly the same amount - and even more - he requires from himself, from his work, the manner of "presenting" at concerts. Is it possible to expect from the same Mr. "Buter Brodsky" a decision to postpone the release of the album due to inconsistency with the internal requirements for his work ("The album is not ideal in my perception, so I am postponing the release to an indefinite date")? Isn't this a sign of a true creator, a sign of a complete absence of the idea of "following the crowd"? In some way, the phenomenon of Oksimiron is also a phenomenon of “anti-hype”, the struggle against the mainstream, just a higher quality level, devoid of a shadow of absurdity. Oksimiron is aimed at creation. Purulent - definitely, for destruction and destructive.
Uphill when pret. Then downhill when sick
“Maybe now someone will understand that I’m not a bronzed statue, I don’t always calculate everything, and I’m ready to risk everything purely for fun, out of sporting interest. And soon I will do it again” — Oxy is ready for defeat and is calm about it. This is not at all the case when one defeat puts an end to the career of a rapper, since battles, again, are not an end in themselves and not the main occupation of Oksimiron (the mentioned Johnyboy really ruined his career, losing to Oxy; which only confirms his real, rather low level in creative plan). “I’ll go further by stadiums, you will continue to troll,” Oxy turns to Purulent. He will continue to move forward, and Purulent - after several successful interviews and caustic remarks - will be destined for the fate of the New Year's fireworks, which, once flying up, will turn into nothing (if it suddenly does not come out of the "underground", which is unlikely).
There is something in this from Turgenev's E. V. Bazarov, the protagonist of the novel "Fathers and Sons", who became a preacher of the idea of "nihilism" in the middle of the 19th century. Bazarov denies creativity, love, morality, family values, nature - throughout the work he advocates a pragmatic approach to things, which he opposes to any sincere “throwing” and aspirations of the soul: “We act by virtue of what we recognize as useful. Rejecting any authority, Eugene proposes the idea of man as a simple combination of chemical and biological processes. Nevertheless, in the end, having gone through love torments that he cannot overcome, the hero dies, and with him the idea of nihilism, which, according to the author's intention, confirms its inferiority. A similar attitude - already regarding the Glory of the CPSU - was expressed by Oksimiron during one of the rounds: “You are not an anti-hero, you are not a hero at all, cause zero empathy ..”; “Where is Purulent behind the banter and anonymity? But he simply does not exist, because he disappeared somewhere. Indeed, it will disappear soon.
“Everyone is now an MC” - this is perhaps true for today's Russian rap. “Anyone can make hip-hop… A person just needs to buy a microphone for a hundred rubles, cut a cap out of foam rubber, put it on it and write his own rap,” Purulent reflects in an interview with Y. Dud. However, those who are ready to write good, high-quality rap, discovering something new and unknown in this genre, are really few.

Oksimiron's song "City Under the Sole" is in the spotlight, apart from comparative characteristics with other rappers, compositions and video clips. Critics, including homegrown ones, often accuse the performer of the similarity of the main ideas of creativity with Eminem. Let's leave the gurus of this musical style alone. To a certain extent, parallels exist, because they both write and perform rap. This means that they are at least similar, approximately like the Don and Volga mentioned in the song "The City Under the Sole". So, only online music: exclusively Oksimiron and his composition.
Travel notes from a rapper
About everything that is hidden from the audience who come to the concerts, it is told without embellishment and "cuts". Therefore, in a number of lines of the composition “City Under the Sole”, obscene language is used, which is very characteristic of the rap style.
In order to get to the fans, Oksimiron and his team travel thousands of kilometers.
They exchanged home comfort for bus seats, communication with relatives - for concert venues with enthusiastic spectators.
The performer did not just rhyme the traveler's notes and added a pumping beat to them. In the song "City Under the Sole", he manages to express his attitude to the multi-party nature of the direction, to fellow rappers who choose between the well-fed life of corporate parties and creative development at apartment houses.
The rapper proclaims that he has the city under his sole, while other guys are under the heel, because his fate has gifted him with endless transfers between settlements regardless of their size, as part of tours.
An ironic sound to the text is given by the neighborhood of scientific words with specific slang, as well as the mention of the zodiac sign of the rapper and an extremely unpretentious rider (requirements for concert organizers). Thanks to this, the composition "City under the sole" does not seem too pretentious.
Oksimiron is sure that thanks to the personal qualities and cohesion of his team, which he considers more than a family, they will be able to overcome all difficulties. At the same time, the rapper warns that the selection for a person to become "one's own" is quite strict. 
Tour without embellishment in the video "City under the sole"
An energetic video sequence immerses the audience into the life of artists for just 4 minutes: a bus, a dressing room, corridors, a stage, hotel rooms. It seems that not everything is so fabulous, and performances are hard work, with a short rest after performances in the company of beauties.
The high quality of editing makes the transitions from one location to another almost imperceptible, and this enhances the impression of the clip. Frames of the video "City under the sole" are replaced with dizzying speed. Here the singer is in a modest hotel, and opening the door immediately gets into the bus to the rest of the musicians, or catches a banana thrown to him in the transport while already in the dressing room. There are many such examples - they are simply worth seeing. The number of people on the screen is constantly increasing, and this adds to the dynamics.
The clip "City under the sole" turned out to be truly frantic due to the frames from the auditorium. The rapper's fans, as if spellbound, move in accordance with the rhythm of the music. The enchanting support of the audience is expressed in the shots with a fragment of stage diving, when Oksimiron soars on their outstretched arms.
The repeated repetition of the phrase "City under the sole" in combination with the rocking music introduces a kind of trance. It is not surprising that after listening to online music, it accompanies any walk along the street, because “City under the sole” sounds like a refrain in my head.
