Univerzita ve Varanasi (Hinduistická univerzita Banaras)
Hinduistická univerzita byla otevřena v roce 1916. Dnes je tato univerzita považována za jednu z nejlepších univerzit v Indii, a protože budova univerzity je krásná, je jednou z hlavních atrakcí Váránasí. Na této vzdělávací instituci studuje přibližně 15 000 studentů a univerzita je také platformou pro studenty a mladé vědce z celého světa. Univerzitní budova je obrovská - například hlavní kampus se rozkládá na ploše 5,5 km2. Uvnitř budovy univerzity se nachází muzeum, které bude pro turisty zajímavé. Muzeum nabízí expozici 150 000 starověkých rukopisů psaných v sanskrtu a také nádherné sbírky soch a miniatur pocházejících z 1. až 15. století.
Chrám Durga (Shri Durga Temple)
Jedná se o jeden z nejoblíbenějších chrámů ve městě. Katedrála byla postavena na počest bohyně Durgy, manželky Šivy (podle některých názorů). Předpokládá se, že bohyně střeží chrám po mnoho staletí a chrání celé město před poškozením. Durga je také považována za ztělesnění ženské síly. V chrámu je k vidění i socha bohyně v červeném rouchu, která se veze na tygrovi. Chrám byl postaven ve 13. století bengálskými maharani ve stylu Nagar (indický styl chrámové architektury). Chrám s červenými stěnami a víceúrovňovou věží se nachází na krásném místě a sousedí s obdélníkovým bazénem Durga Kund. Budova je impozantní, musím říct! Mimochodem, chrám je také známý jako „Monkey Temple“, protože opice neustále šplhají a pobíhají kolem chrámu a žebrají o jídlo od turistů. Během Navratri i mimo něj do tohoto chrámu přicházejí tisíce poutníků.

Chrám Kashi Vishwanath
Chrám zasvěcený Šivovi se nachází na jedné z úzkých uliček města, v místě zvaném Vishwanath Gali. Chrám je ze všech stran obklopen domy a zpočátku kolem něj můžete i projít, aniž byste si toho všimli. Další bod: pro cizince je trochu obtížné dostat se do chrámu, ale stojí za to to zkusit. Nádherný chrám se zlatou střechou je impozantní. Pokud se nedostanete do chrámu, vyjděte alespoň do třetího patra sousedního obchodu. Svatyně chrámu - Adi Visheashvara lingam je umístěna ve stříbrném vybrání v podlaze o hloubce 60 centimetrů a obvodu 90 centimetrů a je vždy zdobena květinami a kolem ní je stříbrná kobra. Chrám se skládá z několika malých chrámů poblíž řeky - chrámy Dhandapani, Avimukteshvara, Vinayaka, Virupaksha a dalších božstev.
Mešita Avrangzeb
Toto je největší mešita ve Varanasi. Najdete ji ve východní části města. Tato mešita byla postavena v roce 1669 na počest triumfu islámu nad bráhmanismem. Galerie byla otevřena v roce 1988 a skládá se ze čtyř sálů, které jsou vzájemně propojeny. V galerii je k vidění asi 50 000 exponátů, konkrétně obrazů mladých místních umělců.

Bharat Mata Mandir
Chrám byl postaven v roce 1936. Chrám se proslavil zejména poté, co se zde konala inaugurační ceremonie Mahátmy Gándhího, jednoho z vůdců hnutí za nezávislost Indie na Velké Británii. Toto je jediný chrám zasvěcený matce Indii, která je zobrazena jako žena ve žlutém nebo oranžovém sárí s vlajkou země. Tato mramorová socha je k vidění uvnitř chrámu. Působivá je také obrovská reliéfní mapa, která pokrývá celý indický subkontinent a tibetskou náhorní plošinu. Tato náhorní plošina je velmi zajímavá ke studiu - všechny hory a řeky jsou jasně viditelné.
Starověké město Vaishali
Starobylé město Vaishali je jedním z posvátných míst, které je uctíváno buddhisty. Zde můžete vidět 18metrový sloup zakončený sochou lva v životní velikosti. Působivý je také starověký chrám ze 4. století, vytvořený z černého kamene, který je zasvěcen bohu Šivovi, dále chrám s mnoha božstvy, umělý rybník pro náboženské omývání a buddhistický klášter. Předpokládá se, že Buddha se v tomto městě zastavil třikrát, aby pronesl své závěrečné kázání. V blízkosti starověkého města byly nalezeny dva pohřby ostatků Buddhy - Buddha stúpy.
Sarnath
Předměstí Sarnath je 15 minut jízdy od centra města. Buddhisté považují toto místo za posvátné, protože zde Buddha pronesl své první kázání o čtyřech vznešených pravdách. Dříve se toto místo nazývalo Mrigadava (Jelení obora). A to vše proto, že existuje legenda, podle které jelen také přišel poslouchat Buddhovy řeči. Proto dnes můžete na střechách domů vidět postavy jelenů. Na místě, kde bylo proneseno první kázání, můžete vidět stúpy - „Lion Capital“ (erb Indie), stúpy Dharmarajika, Kanishka a Guptas, Dhamekh. Také na tomto předměstí se nachází archeologické muzeum s expozicemi soch a relikvií, které byly nalezeny ve městě a jeho okolí. Hlavní chloubou muzea je socha meditujícího Buddhy, která pochází z 6. století našeho letopočtu.

Váránasí je místem, kam přichází velké množství buddhistů vykonávat posvátné rituály, zprostředkování a sebepoznání. Někdo sem přichází, aby se setkal se smrtí – zhruba řečeno na své „poslední cestě“. Ve Váránasí je spousta zajímavých věcí, které dokážou běžného turistu překvapit a někdy i šokovat, ale čím déle na tomto místě zůstanete, tím rychleji si zvyknete na to, co se kolem vás děje. O nejzajímavějších místech vám povím podrobněji níže. Nejprve ale stručně popíšu, jaké je Váránasí. Město se nachází na břehu posvátné řeky Gangy, kam podle legendy Bůh Šiva dopravil duše zesnulých na jejich poslední cestě. Většina hinduistů věří, že po smrti se duše znovu narodí a znovu zažije pozemský život. A abyste našli věčný mír, musíte projít kremací a poté se ponořit do vod posvátné řeky Gangy. 1. Ghát- hlavním významným místem města je nábřeží, Gháty jsou kamenné schody, které jdou do vody řeky Gangy. Děje se tam všechno: koupání v řece, modlitby, meditace, pálení mrtvých. Každý Ghat má své jméno a historii, stejně jako příslušnost. Například na Ghatu, kde lidé meditují, nemůžete spalovat mrtvé a naopak. Hinduisté však většinou využívají tyto posvátné kroky k rituálním koupelím v řece. Obvykle zvědaví turisté rádi zachytí tyto okamžiky svými fotoaparáty, ale sami se v Ganze nekoupou. Řeka samotná je považována za jednu z nejšpinavějších na Zemi, lékaři tvrdí, že obsahuje všechny střevní nemoci. Sami Indové si v něm ale kromě koupání čistí zuby a někteří ho užívají i vnitřně. Zároveň se jim po tomto daří neonemocnět. Tuto skutečnost lze vysvětlit silnou imunitou místních obyvatel, zvyklých na takovou flóru, a také velkou silou víry, která dělá zázraky.

2. Chrám Kashi Vishwanath nebo Zlatý chrám.
Tento chrám je považován za nejposvátnější v Indii. Sama o sobě je však malá a ne vždy se ji podaří najít napoprvé, proto je lepší požádat místní obyvatele, aby vás k ní navedli. Ale bohužel je nepravděpodobné, že budete mít vstup do chrámu, protože vstup je možný pouze pro obyvatele Indie. Můžete ale obdivovat krásu kopulí této stavby, vyrobených ze zlata o váze 800 kg. Uvnitř Kashi Vishwanath se nachází svatyně - Adi Visheashvara lingam, zasvěcený Pánu Šivovi. Tento chrám je centrem poutí v Indii.

3. Kedareshwar- tento chrám, stejně jako ten předchozí, je zasvěcen bohu Šivovi. Nachází se přímo na břehu řeky Gangy, takže najít Kedareshwar nebude těžké, ale stojí za to ho obdivovat z vody, plavit se na speciální lodi pro turisty. Charakteristickým rysem je, že od své stavby nebyl nijak upravován. A to, co uvidíte, je jedinečné. Na rozdíl od Zlatého chrámu sem turisté smí, ale musíte mít oblečení, které vám zakryje lokty a kolena. Uvnitř se nesmí fotografovat.

Muzeum Bharat Kala Bhavan- milovníci umění by toto místo měli určitě navštívit, je zde vystaveno mnoho krásných předmětů z indické kultury; Starověké rukopisy, bronzové sochy, všechny druhy šperků, jak z drahých kovů, tak ne, keramika, buddhistické a hinduistické sochy a další. Abych to shrnul, chci říct, že ve Váránasí je spousta zajímavých míst a trvalo by příliš dlouho je zde všechny vyjmenovat, chci jen říct, že toto svaté město si zaslouží, abyste ho navštívili. Ta pravá Indie se podle mě skrývá tady, ne v Goa, kam jsou zvyklí jezdit turisté. Je velmi zajímavé vidět indickou kulturu, jak moc místní věří a ctí svého Boha. Zdálo se mi, že všichni tito lidé jsou neustále v jakémsi neutrálním stavu mezi životem a smrtí. Nebojí se zemřít, ale naopak smrt považují za něco posvátného a důležitého a možná dokonce, ač to zní směšně, je pro ně smyslem života důstojně zemřít ve vodách velké řeky Gangy.
Váránasí se nachází v severovýchodní Indii v centru údolí Gangy a je součástí státu Uttarpradéš. Je to posvátné místo hinduistů, buddhistů a džinistů, centrum bráhmanské vzdělanosti, jedno z nejstarších měst na světě, město poutníků, kam lidé přicházejí smýt své hříchy do Gangy nebo zpopelňovat své blízké. Váránasí je místem, kde jsou fyzický a duchovní svět úzce propojeny. Ganga je považována za řeku spásy, za symbol naděje pro předky, žijící i budoucí generace. Zde se přímo před zraky kolemjdoucích konají rituály života a smrti.
Varanasi je město s velmi silnou energií, ale je známé nejen svými pohřebními hranicemi: nachází se zde mnoho starověkých chrámů. Vyrábí zde také to nejjemnější hedvábí a šijí z něj šaty, sárí a další rukodělné výrobky.
Jak se dostat do Varanasi
- Autobusem: Z Khajuraho jezdí dva pravidelné autobusy denně a jeden z Bodh Gaya. Autobusové nádraží Varanasi se nachází několik set metrů od hlavního vlakového nádraží Varanasi Cantonment.
- Letadlem: Neexistují žádné přímé lety z Moskvy do Varanasi, budete muset provést dva přestupy, druhý obvykle do Dillí. Odtud letadlo letí na letiště Varanasi Babatpur.
- Vlakem: Pokud chcete navštívit nejen Váránasí, ale i další města v Indii, zvolte cestu vlakem. Vysokorychlostní vlaky z Dillí a Kalkaty přijíždějí do stanice Mughal Serai, 12 km jihovýchodně od Varanasi.
Na konci prosince a v lednu je často silná mlha, která může způsobit zrušení letů a vlaků. To se stává zvláště často na trase Dillí-Varanasi.

Doprava

Klima v těchto místech je vlhké subtropické, léta jsou dlouhá a horká, trvající od dubna do října. Díky studenému vzduchu vanoucímu z Himálaje se teploty od prosince do února pohybují pod −5 °C. V zimě jsou běžné mlhy.
Hotely ve městě Varanasi
Ve Váránasí není o turistické ubytování nouze. Většina turistů upřednostňuje levné penziony blíže k městským atrakcím, a proto jsou zde nejlevnější hotely. Ve městě jsou i drahé hotely, které se soustředí hlavně za nádražím.
Velký výběr turistického ubytování v oblasti Godaulia, v samém centru nábřeží Gangy, blíže ghátům a dalším zajímavým místům Varanasi. Bydlení v ekonomické třídě je tu hodně, ale s komfortem je lepší nepočít. Ceny za ubytování závisí na výhledu z okna, přítomnosti terasy - poutníci na ní často meditují a dostupnosti klimatizace (na té je lepší nešetřit). Ceny začínají od 200 INR na osobu.
Podél řeky Gangy a Starého města je soustředěno mnoho levného bydlení. Populární je zde usazování turistů v soukromých domech. Pronájem pokoje v soukromém domě nebo bytě bude stát nejméně 200-300 INR na osobu, za 1000-1500 INR na den můžete počítat s podmínkami blízkými evropským.
Hned za nádražím je velmi klidná oblast, kde se soustřeďuje převážná část drahých hotelů - ubytovat se tam můžete v naprosto evropsky vyhlížející „tři ruble“ za 40-60 USD nebo ve slušném 4* hotelu za 80-110 USD za den za dvoulůžkový pokoj.
Nakupování ve Varanasi
Město Váránasí je známé svým nejjemnějším hedvábím. Prodává se tu všude: na trzích, v malých obchůdcích s hedvábím na Starém Městě i v obchodech se suvenýry. V obchodu s hedvábím je spousta podvodníků, takže nevěřte barkerům a řidičům rikš, kteří „znají přesně ten nejlepší obchod“. To platí nejen pro soukromé prodejny, ale i pro státní - neexistují žádné záruky. Jediné místo, kde určitě nenarazíte na padělek, je obchod v Mehrotra Silk Factory. S hedvábím a výrobky z něj se zde obchoduje již více než 50 let a o kvalitě není pochyb. Je tam velký výběr a ceny jsou pevné, takže není třeba smlouvat. Ceny za hedvábné šátky a šátky začínají od 400 INR, za šaty a sárí od 2500 INR a hedvábný přehoz lze zakoupit za 9000 INR. Prodejna se nachází v malé boční uličce na nábřeží řeky Gangy, v docházkové vzdálenosti od vlakového nádraží.

Koupíte zde také měděné šperky a nádobí, ručně vyráběné koberce a místní parfémy na bázi oleje. Vůně samozřejmě nejsou pro každého, ale pokud máte to štěstí, že najdete svou vlastní, je to štěstí, protože jsou velmi perzistentní.
Kuchyně a restaurace Varanasi
Váránasí je plné kaváren a restaurací na každém kroku. Většina z nich je nehygienických, zejména ve Starém Městě, ale je tam celkem bezpečno a můžete se tam najíst velmi levně - za 60-70 INR dostanete plnohodnotné jídlo a čaj.
Téměř každý hotel a penzion má vlastní restauraci nebo alespoň malou kavárnu. Čím dražší hotel, tím větší výběr a vyšší šance dostat nejen indická, ale i italská, nepálská a japonská jídla. Nejdražší restaurace, kde je k dostání téměř jakékoli jídlo, se nacházejí v pětihvězdičkových hotelech; Nemusíte tam bydlet, můžete přijít jen na večeři nebo oběd.
Nejoblíbenější jídla v místních restauracích: thali (rýžový a čočkový guláš s kořením a zeleninovými omáčkami), smažená rýže, paneer v různých variacích, nudle, kuře v omáčce, pizza a těstoviny na indický způsob, dosa (velká palačinka z rýžové mouky ) a vše se smaží.
Z ověřených míst:
- místní kuchyně - v restauraci Lotus Lounge (tibetské kari, tibetské „momo“ - trochu podobné knedlíkům a goanským lahůdkám);
- Indické - v El Parador: stojí za to vyzkoušet domácí těstoviny, kuřecí souvlaki (kebab na dřevěných špejlech) a palačinky;
- jídla severní Indie a Afghánistánu - v restauraci Varuna: thali a tandoori kebab;
- Izraelská kuchyně - v restauraci Haifa;
- Japonština - v Megu Cafe: pravé sushi, rohlíky, miso polévka a kuře na zázvoru.
Zábava a atrakce Váránasí
Váránasí se nazývá Město mrtvých – život a smrt jsou zde překvapivě těsně propleteny. Zemřít zde je mezi hinduisty považováno za velkou čest a štěstí – to znamená, že nekonečný cyklus znovuzrození konečně skončí a duše skončí v tom nejlepším ze světů. Proto se všichni staří a nemocní hinduisté, když pocítí blízkou smrt, snaží dostat do Váránasí.
Pokud má člověk tu smůlu, že opustí svět ve Městě mrtvých, jeho tělo sem příbuzní přivezou na rituální kremaci. Tyto pohřební hranice se staly téměř hlavní místní atrakcí. Pro hinduisty samotné na tom není nic smutného ani dramatického – z jejich pohledu se duše stále buď znovuzrodí, nebo skončí v nirváně.
Fotografie pohřebních obřadů nejsou povoleny. Neexistuje žádný zakazující zákon, ale místní vám to zadarmo nedovolí, prodej pseudopovolení je druh podnikání. Ceny se liší – od 300 INR za snímek až po 13 000 – 15 000 INR za den focení. Natáčení profesionální kamerou bude stát 5-10x více.
Nábřeží Gangy je místem, kde se ve Váránasí nejvíce baví. Zde se modlí, meditují a jen sedí ve vodě a komunikují. Publikum je velmi rozmanité: poutníci, rastafariáni, podivíni, žebráci, umělci a překupníci hašiše.

Chrámy Baranasi
Ve Váránasí je nejméně dva tisíce chrámů, jejich přesný počet není znám. Nejpůsobivější:
- Vishwanath (alias Zlatý chrám) - postaven v roce 1785 a jen na jeho pozlacení bylo vynaloženo 800 kg ryzího zlata. Nehinduisté se tam nedostanou, a tak turisté stoupají do třetího patra obchodu v sousední budově – odtud je nejlépe vidět zlatá střecha.
- Kedareshvar - stojí na břehu Gangy a vyniká mezi všemi ostatními budovami svými pruhovanými červenobílými stěnami. Do místního lingamu (symbol božské síly v hinduismu) se nosí voda a květiny, protože se věří, že pokud se nezalévá, zasáhne město sucho.
- Annapurna Bhavani je jedním z nejdůležitějších chrámů ve Varanasi, kde se uctívá bohyně Annapurna a ženská energie. V chrámu se nachází socha Annapurny vyrobená z jednoho kusu zlata.
- Durga je nejoblíbenějším chrámem mezi turisty. Má červené stěny a lidově se mu říká „opice“, protože kolem něj je vždy spousta opic. Je zde uctívána Bohyně Matka, samotný chrám se nachází na velmi krásném místě a má dokonce i vlastní bazén.
Muzea a galerie
V Sarnath (předměstí Váránasí, 10 km od města) se nachází zajímavé archeologické muzeum, kde si můžete prohlédnout starožitnosti ze 3. století. před naším letopočtem E. až do 12. století n. E. Jsou zde vystaveny fragmenty starověkých klášterů, které postavili Buddhovi následovníci, fragmenty sloupů a další archeologické artefakty nalezené v těchto místech.
14 km od Váránasí na druhém břehu Gangy se nachází pevnost Ram Nagar, postavená z červeného pískovce v 18. století. V pevnosti je muzeum a chrám zasvěcený staroindickému básníkovi Vjásovi, který napsal Mahábháratu. 25 km od Váránasí se nachází pevnost Chunar – ruiny starověkých osad.

Ve Váránasí jsou bary a další nápoje, ale nacházejí se daleko od Gangy. Váránasí lze nazvat městským muzeem nebo možná i městským chrámem: podle některých údajů se zde nachází dva až tři tisíce různých sakrálních staveb. Myslím, že přesné číslo nikdo nezná.
Dříve nábřeží Gangy, kde se koncentruje hlavní chuť Varanasi a kterým město vděčí za velkou část své popularity. Tento článek bude hovořit o hlavních atrakcích, které jsme navštívili. Ve většině chrámů je zakázáno fotografovat „pouhým smrtelníkům“, takže tentokrát budou fotografie z internetu.
Chrám Kashi Vishwanath. Jeden z nejvýznamnějších hinduistických chrámů v celé Indii, pro muslimy něco jako Mekka: každý hinduista se alespoň jednou za život pokusí navštívit Kashi Vishwanath. Proto jsou tam fronty prostě neuvěřitelné, zvláště o svátcích a víkendech: táhnou se desítky metrů po úzkých klikatých uličkách. Galerie umění Benares– umělecká galerie, úžasná, protože se zde můžete věcí starých několik set let nejen dotýkat vlastníma rukama, ale dokonce je i kupovat. Je zde také mnoho exponátů současných umělců a řemeslníků. Neodolal jsem a koupil jsem si bronzovou figurku Parvati, která mě naprosto okouzlila. Podle zaměstnance galerie byla figurka vyrobena ve stejný den, ale je tak dovedně stará, že se zdá, jako by ležela zapomenutá v rohu nějakého starověkého chrámu několik staletí.

Budova vypadá trochu drsně. Byl postaven v 17. století ve východní části Váránasí. Mešita Avrangzeb je dnes největší takovou stavbou v celém městě. Na horním patře je nádherná vyhlídková plošina, otevřená pro každého, ze které můžete vidět veškerou krásu starověkého města Varanasi.
Mnoho turistů si všimne vynikající akustiky, díky které je nádherný zpěv slyšet ve zdech mešity Avrangzeb slyšet i na přístupech k budově.
Tato místa jsou považována za posvátná pro všechny buddhisty, protože Buddha navštívil Vaishali více než jednou a dokonce měl kázání. Nedaleko hranic starověkého města byly při vykopávkách objeveny ostatky Buddhy. Rozhodli se zanechat část popela Velkého Proroka ve Vaishali.
Milovníky starověku jistě zaujme antický chrám z černého kamene. Jeho stavba podle historiků sahá až do 4. století.

Chrám není tak snadné najít – budete se muset trochu ztratit úzkými a klikatými uličkami posvátného Váránasí. Chrám Kashi Vishwanath, obklopený těsným prstencem okolních budov, udivuje cestovatele svou zlatou střechou, kterou lze obdivovat pouze z oken a otevřených prostor sousedních budov.
Na území Varanasi a poblíž jeho hranic najdete velké množství náboženských zajímavostí. Zvláštní místo na seznamu míst, která musíte vidět, zaujímají gháty - to jsou schody vedoucí k řece, kde se provádějí mytí a pálení mrtvých.
Manikarnika Ghat je jednou z nejznámějších a strašidelných atrakcí Varanasi. Jsou zde speciální pohřební hranice, které hoří již několik tisíciletí podél břehů řeky Gangy. V jádru lze toto místo nazvat krematoriem pod širým nebem, kde je práce v plném proudu a nekončí.
I přes ponurou, depresivní atmosféru je toto místo oblíbené mezi turisty z celého světa. Průvodci a speciální značky upozorňují, že fotografování a natáčení je zakázáno. Je pozoruhodné, že obytné budovy se nacházejí doslova co by kamenem dohodil od tohoto hrozného místa.
Assi ghat

Tuto akci můžete sledovat, když stojíte na břehu nebo si půjčíte loď. Podívaná přitahuje každý den obrovské množství diváků. Malé olejové lampy se prodávají speciálně pro turisty - na konci obřadu se spouštějí do vody. Pohled na četná světla, která postupně zaplňují celou hladinu vody a mění Gangu v ohnivou řeku, je skutečně hypnotizující a zanechává v paměti nepopsatelný dojem.
Umělecká galerie je pojmenována po umělci, který ji vytvořil. Tuto atrakci můžete navštívit v kterýkoli pracovní den (přesnou otevírací dobu si nejlépe předem ověřte telefonicky a na webu galerie).
Každý den navštíví sály této pohostinné budovy desítky a stovky znalců krásy. Příjemné místo vás skvěle naladí a dodá vám pocit lehkosti a dobré nálady na celý den.

Univerzitní budova je obrovská - například hlavní kampus se rozkládá na ploše 5,5 km2. Uvnitř budovy univerzity se nachází muzeum, které bude pro turisty zajímavé. Muzeum nabízí expozici 150 000 starověkých rukopisů psaných v sanskrtu a také nádherné sbírky soch a miniatur pocházejících z 1. až 15. století.
Chrám Durga (Shri Durga Temple)
Jedná se o jeden z nejoblíbenějších chrámů ve městě. Katedrála byla postavena na počest bohyně Durgy, manželky Šivy (podle některých názorů). Předpokládá se, že bohyně střeží chrám po mnoho staletí a chrání celé město před poškozením. Durga je také považována za ztělesnění ženské síly. V chrámu je k vidění i socha bohyně v červeném rouchu, která se veze na tygrovi. Chrám byl postaven ve 13. století bengálskými maharani ve stylu Nagar (indický styl chrámové architektury). Chrám s červenými stěnami a víceúrovňovou věží se nachází na krásném místě a sousedí s obdélníkovým bazénem Durga Kund. Budova je impozantní, musím říct! Mimochodem, chrám je také známý jako „Monkey Temple“, protože opice neustále šplhají a pobíhají kolem chrámu a žebrají o jídlo od turistů. Během Navratri i mimo něj do tohoto chrámu přicházejí tisíce poutníků.

Chrám Kashi Vishwanath
Chrám zasvěcený Šivovi se nachází na jedné z úzkých uliček města, v místě zvaném Vishwanath Gali. Chrám je ze všech stran obklopen domy a zpočátku kolem něj můžete i projít, aniž byste si toho všimli. Další bod: pro cizince je trochu obtížné dostat se do chrámu, ale stojí za to to zkusit. Nádherný chrám se zlatou střechou je impozantní. Pokud se nedostanete do chrámu, vyjděte alespoň do třetího patra sousedního obchodu. Svatyně chrámu - Adi Visheashvara lingam je umístěna ve stříbrném vybrání v podlaze o hloubce 60 centimetrů a obvodu 90 centimetrů a je vždy zdobena květinami a kolem ní je stříbrná kobra. Chrám se skládá z několika malých chrámů poblíž řeky - chrámy Dhandapani, Avimukteshvara, Vinayaka, Virupaksha a dalších božstev.
Mešita Avrangzeb
Toto je největší mešita ve Varanasi. Najdete ji ve východní části města. Tato mešita byla postavena v roce 1669 na počest triumfu islámu nad bráhmanismem. O století později byla budova rekonstruována. Budova vypadá trochu ponuře. Mešita má čtvercový tvar a tři kupole podepřené sloupy. Zajímavostí je, že mešita má vynikající akustiku. Navštívit můžete také vyhlídkovou terasu v mešitě, která nabízí nádherný výhled na město a okolí.
Umělecká galerie ve Varanasi (umělecká galerie Banaras)
Galerie byla otevřena v roce 1988 a skládá se ze čtyř sálů, které jsou vzájemně propojeny. V galerii je k vidění asi 50 000 exponátů, konkrétně obrazů mladých místních umělců.

Bharat Mata Mandir
Chrám byl postaven v roce 1936. Chrám se proslavil zejména poté, co se zde konala inaugurační ceremonie Mahátmy Gándhího, jednoho z vůdců hnutí za nezávislost Indie na Velké Británii. Toto je jediný chrám zasvěcený matce Indii, která je zobrazena jako žena ve žlutém nebo oranžovém sárí s vlajkou země. Tato mramorová socha je k vidění uvnitř chrámu. Působivá je také obrovská reliéfní mapa, která pokrývá celý indický subkontinent a tibetskou náhorní plošinu. Tato náhorní plošina je velmi zajímavá ke studiu - všechny hory a řeky jsou jasně viditelné.
Starověké město Vaishali
Starobylé město Vaishali je jedním z posvátných míst, které je uctíváno buddhisty. Zde můžete vidět 18metrový sloup zakončený sochou lva v životní velikosti. Působivý je také starověký chrám ze 4. století, vytvořený z černého kamene, který je zasvěcen bohu Šivovi, dále chrám s mnoha božstvy, umělý rybník pro náboženské omývání a buddhistický klášter. Předpokládá se, že Buddha se v tomto městě zastavil třikrát, aby pronesl své závěrečné kázání. V blízkosti starověkého města byly nalezeny dva pohřby ostatků Buddhy - Buddha stúpy.
Sarnath
Předměstí Sarnath je 15 minut jízdy od centra města. Buddhisté považují toto místo za posvátné, protože zde Buddha pronesl své první kázání o čtyřech vznešených pravdách. Dříve se toto místo nazývalo Mrigadava (Jelení obora). A to vše proto, že existuje legenda, podle které jelen také přišel poslouchat Buddhovy řeči. Proto dnes můžete na střechách domů vidět postavy jelenů. Na místě, kde bylo proneseno první kázání, můžete vidět stúpy - „Lion Capital“ (erb Indie), stúpy Dharmarajika, Kanishka a Guptas, Dhamekh. Také na tomto předměstí se nachází archeologické muzeum s expozicemi soch a relikvií, které byly nalezeny ve městě a jeho okolí. Hlavní chloubou muzea je socha meditujícího Buddhy, která pochází z 6. století našeho letopočtu.

Váránasí je místem, kam přichází velké množství buddhistů vykonávat posvátné rituály, zprostředkování a sebepoznání. Někdo sem přichází, aby se setkal se smrtí – zhruba řečeno na své „poslední cestě“. Ve Váránasí je spousta zajímavých věcí, které dokážou běžného turistu překvapit a někdy i šokovat, ale čím déle na tomto místě zůstanete, tím rychleji si zvyknete na to, co se kolem vás děje. O nejzajímavějších místech vám povím podrobněji níže. Nejprve ale stručně popíšu, jaké je Váránasí. Město se nachází na břehu posvátné řeky Gangy, kam podle legendy Bůh Šiva dopravil duše zesnulých na jejich poslední cestě. Většina hinduistů věří, že po smrti se duše znovu narodí a znovu zažije pozemský život. A abyste našli věčný mír, musíte projít kremací a poté se ponořit do vod posvátné řeky Gangy. Co stojí za to vidět ve Váránasí.
1. Ghát- hlavním významným místem města je nábřeží, Gháty jsou kamenné schody, které jdou do vody řeky Gangy. Děje se tam všechno: koupání v řece, modlitby, meditace, pálení mrtvých. Každý Ghat má své jméno a historii, stejně jako příslušnost. Například na Ghatu, kde lidé meditují, nemůžete spalovat mrtvé a naopak. Hinduisté však většinou využívají tyto posvátné kroky k rituálním koupelím v řece. Obvykle zvědaví turisté rádi zachytí tyto okamžiky svými fotoaparáty, ale sami se v Ganze nekoupou. Řeka samotná je považována za jednu z nejšpinavějších na Zemi, lékaři tvrdí, že obsahuje všechny střevní nemoci. Sami Indové si v něm ale kromě koupání čistí zuby a někteří ho užívají i vnitřně. Zároveň se jim po tomto daří neonemocnět. Tuto skutečnost lze vysvětlit silnou imunitou místních obyvatel, zvyklých na takovou flóru, a také velkou silou víry, která dělá zázraky.

2. Chrám Kashi Vishwanath nebo Zlatý chrám.
Tento chrám je považován za nejposvátnější v Indii. Sama o sobě je však malá a ne vždy se ji podaří najít napoprvé, proto je lepší požádat místní obyvatele, aby vás k ní navedli. Ale bohužel je nepravděpodobné, že budete mít vstup do chrámu, protože vstup je možný pouze pro obyvatele Indie. Můžete ale obdivovat krásu kopulí této stavby, vyrobených ze zlata o váze 800 kg. Uvnitř Kashi Vishwanath se nachází svatyně - Adi Visheashvara lingam, zasvěcený Pánu Šivovi. Tento chrám je centrem poutí v Indii.

3. Kedareshwar- tento chrám, stejně jako ten předchozí, je zasvěcen bohu Šivovi. Nachází se přímo na břehu řeky Gangy, takže najít Kedareshwar nebude těžké, ale stojí za to ho obdivovat z vody, plavit se na speciální lodi pro turisty. Charakteristickým rysem je, že od své stavby nebyl nijak upravován. A to, co uvidíte, je jedinečné. Na rozdíl od Zlatého chrámu sem turisté smí, ale musíte mít oblečení, které vám zakryje lokty a kolena. Uvnitř se nesmí fotografovat.

Muzeum Bharat Kala Bhavan- milovníci umění by toto místo měli určitě navštívit, je zde vystaveno mnoho krásných předmětů z indické kultury; Starověké rukopisy, bronzové sochy, všechny druhy šperků, jak z drahých kovů, tak ne, keramika, buddhistické a hinduistické sochy a další. Muzeum se nachází v kampusu Banaras Hindu, největší vzdělávací instituce v Indii.

Abych to shrnul, chci říct, že ve Váránasí je spousta zajímavých míst a trvalo by příliš dlouho je zde všechny vyjmenovat, chci jen říct, že toto svaté město si zaslouží, abyste ho navštívili. Ta pravá Indie se podle mě skrývá tady, ne v Goa, kam jsou zvyklí jezdit turisté. Je velmi zajímavé vidět indickou kulturu, jak moc místní věří a ctí svého Boha. Zdálo se mi, že všichni tito lidé jsou neustále v jakémsi neutrálním stavu mezi životem a smrtí. Nebojí se zemřít, ale naopak smrt považují za něco posvátného a důležitého a možná dokonce, ač to zní směšně, je pro ně smyslem života důstojně zemřít ve vodách velké řeky Gangy.
