The most popular are the following specialties in which training is conducted at the university - all specialties of the Faculty of Technical Cybernetics, the specialty of “multi-channel telecommunication systems” of the Institute of Radio Electronics and Telecommunications; specialties related to the operation of cars, all specialties of the economics and humanities faculties.
Meanwhile, due to the crisis in the country’s aerospace complex, aviation specialties are in little demand. There is a growing need for specialists in computer science and computer technology, communications, management and technology service.
Employment of graduates is carried out by concluding contracts with specialized enterprises. About 60% of graduates work in their specialty, the remaining 40% find employment quite easily in related fields of engineering, technology or mass communications. A recruitment agency has been created.
At the moment, about 26 thousand students of various forms of education are studying at KSTU-KAI. The number of graduates with honors is approximately 15% of the graduating class (150-160 people).

The former Kazan Aviation Institute "KAI", and now the Kazan National Research Technical University. Tupalev, was founded in March 1932 in accordance with the decision of the People's Committee of Heavy Industry, namely its main department in the field of aviation industry. Initially, the university was located in the building of a former gymnasium and included two departments, namely: aerodynamics and aircraft construction. Over time, the Faculty of Aircraft Engineering was founded on their basis.
From the very foundation, scientific and research work was actively carried out at the institute, within the framework of which N.G. Chetaev founded the “Scientific School of General Mechanics”. Subsequently, he was transferred to Moscow to the position of director of the Institute of Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union.
In the period from 1933 to 1939, at the design bureau of the Kazan Aviation Institute, its specialists created models of single-engine and twin-engine aircraft, which at one time set official records. In the post-war years, the department of jet engines was founded at the institute, which at that time was unique and one of its kind among all Soviet universities. One of the first teachers there was Sergei Pavlovich Korolev. With the development of the domestic aviation industry, faculties of aviation instrument making and radio engineering appeared at KAI. The latter became in the future the largest in the entire institute.
In 1991, the Faculty of Economics, Finance and Management appeared at the Kazan Aviation Institute. And the very next year it turns into KSTU (Kazan State Technical University). From this moment on, the university is rapidly increasing the number of specialties and areas of training for future specialists. The Center for Continuing Education is being created, and the Faculty of Humanities is being founded. Subsequently, in 2000, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was also organized, and in 2003 – the Faculty of Economics and Law.
Today, the Kazan National Research Technical University named after Tupalev includes in its structure eight faculties, which train specialists in a total of 70 specialties. In addition, in 2007, the College of Information Technologies was organized on the basis of the University, and there is also a center (KUIMC) for students with limited hearing.

Story
Kazan Aviation Institute was formed on the basis of the aerodynamic department of Kazan State University by the decision of the Main Directorate of Aviation Industry of the People's Commissariat of Heavy Industry on March 5, 1932.
At the beginning, the institute consisted of two departments: aerodynamics and aircraft engineering, on the basis of which the aircraft engineering faculty was officially opened in 1934 (the first dean was K. A. Arkhipov).
From the first days of the institute's existence, intensive research work was carried out. It was headed by Nikolai Guryevich Chetaev, who created a scientific school of general mechanics within the walls of the institute. In 1940, N. G. Chetaev was transferred to work in Moscow to the position of deputy. director (since 1944 - director) of the Institute of Mechanics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, in 1943 he was elected corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
Since 1933, the institute was one of the first among the country's aviation universities to begin publishing collections of scientific articles, called “Proceedings of KAI”, which were regularly published and became an authoritative scientific publication. In 1933, the defense of candidate dissertations by the teachers of the institute began, the first to defend was G.V. Kamenkov, who later became the rector of KAI, and since 1949 - the vice-rector, rector of the MAI. In 1937, the first defenses of doctoral dissertations took place by G. V. Kamenkov, Kh. M. Mushtari, I. G. Malkin. Along with theoretical research, design developments were also successfully carried out at the institute. In 1933-1939, the KAI Design Bureau created a series of single- and twin-engine aircraft, which implemented new ideas and design solutions for that time (hovering ailerons, retractable landing gear, elastic wings, etc.). A number of official records were set on these aircraft.
In 1939, an engine-building faculty was opened at KAI (the first dean was A. A. Chuslyaev). The head of the aircraft engines department was S.V. Rumyantsev, later the rector of KAI, then deputy. Minister of Higher Education of the USSR, Rector of the Peoples' Friendship University named after Patrice Lumumba.
During the Great Patriotic War, a number of divisions and laboratories of the Institute of Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, TsAGI, the Flight Research Institute (LII), the Scientific Research Institute of the Civil Air Fleet, as well as the entire staff of the Kharkov Aviation Institute, worked on the premises of the institute. In the period from 1941 to 1943, leading scientists - aerodynamicists A. A. Dorodnitsin, S. A. Khristianovich, V. V. Struminsky, led by the future president of the USSR Academy of Sciences M. V. Keldysh, worked within the walls of KAI.

In 1972, the Faculty of Computing and Control Systems was opened (the first dean was Yu. V. Kozhevnikov). In 1973, the institute was named after the outstanding Soviet aircraft designer Andrei Nikolaevich Tupolev. In March 1982, in honor of its 50th anniversary, the institute was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples.
In 1987, for the first time in the city's universities, elections for the rector of the institute were held on an alternative basis. Their table is Professor G.L. Degtyarev, who heads the university to this day. In 1991, a new faculty of management, economics, finance and entrepreneurship was founded at the institute (the first dean was T. K. Sirazetdinov).
Having become a technical university, KAI has significantly expanded the range of areas and specialties of higher education. In 1995, the university created the Faculty of Humanities (the first dean is D. K. Sabirova), in 2000 - the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics Training (the first dean - K. G. Garayev), in 2003 - the Faculty of Economic Theory and Law (Dean Khasanova A. Sh.) and the Faculty of Psychology and Business Administration (Dean Gabdreev R. V.).
In 1999, the Institute of Aviation, Ground Transport and Energy (IANTE) was founded on the basis of the faculties of aircraft and aircraft engines. The first director is Dregalin A.F. At the institute (IANTE) and at all faculties there is a multi-level system of training specialists, which includes training of a specialist engineer (5 - 5.5 years of study), bachelor's degree (4 years) and master's degree (6 years).
In 2003, on the basis of the radio technical faculty, the Institute of Radio Electronics and Telecommunications (IRET) was formed, director G. I. Shcherbakov.
KSTU (KAI) named after. A. N. Tupolev today is a large diversified educational and scientific complex. The university has 11 branches in the cities of Tatarstan and the Volga region: Volzhsk, Almetyevsk, Bugulma, Zelenodolsk, Yelabuga, Naberezhnye Chelny, Chistopol, Nizhnekamsk, Zainsk, Leninogorsk, Vyatskie Polyany. Today, about 15,000 students study at KSTU (KAI) in all faculties and branches.
In 1992, the Center for Continuing Education (CLE) was created - the first director is Vatolin A.K. In the structure of the CLE - the Institute for Advanced Training and Retraining of Teaching Personnel (created in 1994, the first director is Sabirova D.K.), Faculty of Pre-University Training (created in 1989, the first director is M. International relations between KSTU and KAI began in 1937, when a group of teachers and employees of OKB-KAI traveled to France to become familiar with the production at the RENAULT aircraft factories. From 1947 to 1955, foreign students and graduate students from Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, China, North Korea, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia studied at KAI.
After a forty-year break, since 1996, KSTU has resumed training foreign students and graduate students. To date, students from Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Korea, India, Pakistan, China, Palestine, Libya, Germany, and the USA have studied here under various programs. Scientific and educational ties with universities in Brazil, Germany, Spain, China, Libya, the USA, France and other countries are actively developing. Coordination of interaction with international scientific and educational centers is carried out by the Department of International Relations.
The research department of the university includes: Research Institute of Physical and Chemical Processes, Research Center for Strength Problems, Research Center for Applied Radio Electronics, Research Institute for Light Music Problems, more than 50 research laboratories and student design bureaus, and a technology park.
On the basis of the university there are: Center for Energy Saving Technologies of the Republic of Tatarstan, Head Certification Center for Welding for the Republic of Tatarstan, Mari El, Chuvashia; Research Center for CALS Technologies and Quality Management; Regional Innovation Research Center of the Republic of Tatarstan and the branch of the Agency of the Republic of Tatarstan for the Support of Small Business; branch of the Russian State University of Innovative Technologies and Entrepreneurship.
In 2001, the Open Technical University of Tatarstan was created on an associative basis. In addition to our university, it included the Kama Polytechnic Institute, six technical schools, six research institutes and design bureaus.
