How many kg should a suitcase weigh at the airport. How much luggage is allowed on the plane? Rules for the transportation of portable electronic smoking devices on flights of Rossiya Airlines JSC
Many have witnessed cases where passengers were forced to pay for even a small excess of things that they carry with them. There are basic rules by which the allowable weight of baggage on an aircraft is formed, and norms that determine the basic standards for its transportation.
Permissible baggage weight: main rules
It is very rare for people to fly on an airplane and not take luggage with them. At a minimum, they take hand luggage with them, the most common items in this segment of luggage are a handbag or nubuck. Most of the things are usually sent in luggage. In this case, you need to take into account the rules by which a particular airline determines the free transportation of things. Each company has its own rules. Sometimes you can take up to 30 kg with you for free, but in some cases you will have to pay extra for such a volume of things.
All airlines for economy class passengers provide only one piece of baggage, if we are not talking about participation in various promotions and bonuses. Often the allowable weight of luggage on an airplane fluctuates between 20-23 kg, and you have to pay extra for the rest, and usually a rather impressive amount. For a child under the age of 10 years, a separate place is required, in which at least 10 kg of things can be put.
The maximum allowed baggage weight on an airplane is always no more than 32 kg, as this value is determined by international regulations. To get second place, you will have to pay a fairly large amount of money, so it is advisable to meet the allotted mass or try to take part in programs in which you can buy a seat on an airplane with two luggage compartments at once.
These inconveniences primarily concern those passengers who purchase economy class tickets. For those who decide to take a business class or first class seat, 2 pieces of baggage are automatically issued at once. Sometimes people want to carry luggage that weighs more than 32 kg in one compartment. In this case, you need to call the airline and arrange in advance, but you should be prepared for the fact that employees may refuse to implement this request.
Many passengers who travel as a couple resort to one common trick. Instead of taking two bags with you, put all the necessary things in one. The weight is above the norm for one person, but does not exceed this mark for two, since it often equals 46 kg. If you familiarize yourself with the regulations that the airline makes, you can be sure that the consolidation of baggage is not allowed.
For two passengers, excess weight is allowed, but it should not exceed the allowable norm of 32 kg. Compliance with this rule depends on the decision of the airline employees, as well as on the position of the loaders regarding the highest mark of the weight of the lifted cargo. For example, the allowable baggage weight on a Ural Airlines aircraft is from 20 kg to 40 kg, depending on the selected fare.
Permissible baggage weight on the aircraft in configuration hand luggage also different, determined by the rules of the airline. Many allow you to carry with you from 5 kg to 10 kg of things. Regardless of the bag that goes in hand luggage, each person can take personal items with them, such as a coat, umbrella, blanket, laptop or camera with storage bags. It is also allowed to bring orthopedic aids, often walking sticks or crutches.
Many people prefer to purchase tickets immediately for flights of 2-3 airlines that have entered into a code-share agreement with each other. This aspect does not mean that the transportation rules are combined and become identical because of this. Each airline puts forward its own requirements and sets certain standards. It is necessary to know the rules of each company so that when choosing any transport flight, you do not make a mistake with the maximum allowable mark.
Baggage on different airlines
If you are interested in the question of what is the allowable weight of baggage on an airplane, you should familiarize yourself with the conditions of various carriers. Low-cost airlines can have relatively low fares, but they also have fairly unpredictable baggage allowances. Sometimes a person has to pay for a piece of baggage, regardless of how much each object specifically weighs. Many firms make such rules, compliance with which can be ensured only after significant time spent on studying them and purchasing the right containers.
FlyDubai
One piece of hand luggage with a maximum weight of 7 kg and less than 56 cm x 45 cm x 25 cm. You are also allowed to bring a small bag with you or replace it with nubuck. In case of paid baggage transportation, money is paid in advance. It is allowed to take luggage that does not exceed 20 kg in weight. If there is a need to transport heavier items, you will have to find out about this possibility from the carrier in advance, that is, the client may be denied this. One piece of baggage cannot exceed not only the weight of 32 kg, but also certain dimensions: 75 cm x 55 cm x 35 cm.
Air Berlin
This airline is not a low-cost airline in the literal sense. If baggage is paid in advance, you must transfer 15 euros. When there is a need to pay for transportation directly at the airport, before boarding the flight, you will have to pay 30 euros. It is also possible to carry luggage. One unit must be less than the maximum possible weight (23 kg). There is the FlyFlex option, where you can take two pieces of luggage for free. If there is an excess, an additional payment must be made. Depending on the selected package of services, you will have to pay an additional 50 or 100 euros for a one-way flight.
EasyJet
With regard to all things that are brought into the cabin with them, only one piece of baggage is allocated with dimensions strictly not exceeding 56 × 45 × 25 cm. For standard baggage, the passenger must pay at the time of ticket purchase, however, the total allowable baggage weight per person in an airplane must not exceed 20 kg. You can immediately pay extra for the additional weight of luggage, however, you can carry no more than 32 kg in one cell. It should be borne in mind that it is not the number of bags that is calculated, but the total weight of things, which for many passengers is a convenient point of the rules. When passengers are traveling in pairs, it is possible to divide the weight unequally. Together they account for 40 kg, and if necessary, two cells can be filled with bags of 18 kg and 20 kg.
RyanAir
This airline has introduced complex rules regarding fees and maximum allowable baggage weight. A passenger can take up to two items, however, the cost of carrying them is calculated depending on the season, which may be high or low. The cost will differ when deciding to pay through the site when ordering tickets or at the airport itself.
If the season is low, then for the first piece of luggage each passenger is obliged to pay 15 euros, while the weight is not more than 15 kg. If the trip is carried out in the high season, then you will have to pay 25 euros for the same weight. When the allowable weight of luggage on the plane is 20 kg, then you will have to pay 25 euros for the first piece or 35 euros - according to the season.
The second piece of baggage must be no more than 15 kg, and you can order this seat only through the website, by entering the Manage my booking section. You will have to pay an additional 40 euros in the low season, and when it is high, you need to pay an additional 50 euros. You can take with you to the cabin free of charge a piece of hand luggage with a volume of 55×40×20 cm, the weight of which does not exceed 10 kg.
"Aeroflot"
The allowable baggage weight on an Aeroflot plane is 23 kg if a person wants to carry baggage for free, but flies in economy class. When measuring three sides of the bag, the total figures should not exceed 158 cm. The allowable baggage weight on an Aeroflot aircraft when carrying things in hand luggage is 10 kg. The total figures when measuring three sides of the bag should not exceed 115 cm.
"Transaero"
Permissible baggage weight on a Transaero aircraft when flying to charter flights is 20 kg, and in economy class - 25 kg. When a person boards a business class, he is entitled to a piece of baggage, where the load is not more than 30 kg.
One of the main concerns for tourists when traveling by plane is baggage. There are many stories that tell that luggage is often lost and then either found after a long period of time, or disappears forever. If there are no problems with luggage initially, there is a greater chance that things will not be mixed up.
Not only the amount of effort spent, but also the cost of your flight depends on the weight of the luggage. Low-cost airlines live due to the fact that many tourists cannot meet the minimum weight and are forced to buy luggage. Major airlines initially include the transportation of oversized suitcases in the cost of all tickets. In any case, exceeding the maximum weight threatens with a serious surcharge, so it is better to know the norms of each airline in advance.
Everything that gets on board the plane with you is divided into two categories:
- hand luggage- this is what you take with you to the salon. Depending on the rules of a particular air carrier, dimensions and weight may vary.
- Checked baggage- these are suitcases, strollers, skis and other things that you rent at the check-in desk. They fly in the cargo hold of the aircraft.
Each airline sets the weight and size of hand luggage individually. On major airlines, up to 2 pieces of small-sized baggage weighing 8-10 kg.
Checked baggage includes suitcases weighing 20-23 kg.
Baggage allowances on major airlines
One of the main advantages of major airlines is free baggage up to 20-23 kg. You don't have to pay extra for it.
The maximum size should be understood as an approximation. The main thing is that your suitcase, according to the results of three measurements (height, width, depth), does not exceed the sum of the sizes indicated in the table.

In addition to hand luggage, you will be allowed to take on board the aircraft:
- stroller-cane

- telephone,
- shopping bag from Duty Free
Baggage rules for low-cost airlines
If the restriction for large airlines is related to the safety of passengers (in the event of a suitcase falling on their heads), then budget airlines also have a desire to make money on tourists who are inattentive to the rules.
Low-cost airlines receive the lion's share of their income from additional sales, so they limit tourists as much as possible in the allowable hand luggage. To do this, there are scales and niches next to the check-in desk and at the gates, where your bag should fit.
Unlike large companies, you must board the low-cost airline with one piece of luggage.
Some airlines allow handbags and laptops to be carried on board in addition to hand luggage.

If you know that your carry-on baggage is 0.5-1 kg heavier than it should be and you can’t take anything away, then it’s better to book it as checked baggage in advance and pay for it as soon as possible.
If it is not possible to pay online, then do it at the airport at the check-in counter. It will be 1.5-2 times more expensive than online, but still cheaper than at the gate, where you will have to pay a fairly substantial amount for overweight.
General Rules for Carrying Baggage on an Airplane
- The maximum weight of one suitcase is 32 kg. If you are flying with three people and packed in 1 suitcase, it should not be heavier than 32 kg. The rule was introduced for the safety of airport workers who will need to lift this suitcase and to avoid overloading the aircraft.
- If you are flying business class, then usually you can add 5-10 kg to the maximum indicated in the table.
- If your suitcase is heavier than allowed, you will need to pay extra for overweight at the check-in desk.
- Sports equipment (skis, bicycles) has its own transportation rules. It is better to clarify this information on the website of the air carrier.
- If you are traveling with children, check for children's luggage as well. Infants are usually allowed an extra piece of baggage in the cabin.

The rules governing free hand luggage on an airplane are determined by airlines, and most of them impose strict restrictions on the size and weight of bags. Aeroflot is no exception. When flying with this carrier, you should familiarize yourself in advance with the 2020 regulations that apply to allowable dimensions and the weight of hand luggage - this will allow you to avoid problems during the inspection of things.
Dimensions of allowable hand luggage
On board an aircraft, you have every right to take a bag or briefcase, the sum of the three sides of which (width, as well as length and height) does not exceed 115 centimeters. For example, it is allowed to take a hiking bag with parameters 40x55x20, or a small suitcase with dimensions 55x35x25 into the cabin of the aircraft. A smaller sum of measurements is possible, a larger one is not.
These restrictions apply exclusively on Aeroflot flights, while codeshare flights with other airlines are subject to the rules established by the partner carrier.
Weight of free hand luggage
The permitted weight carried on board an Aeroflot aircraft is determined by the class of the passenger seat. In the business lounge, it is permissible to take a bag weighing up to 15 kilograms, while in economy / comfort classes, the maximum weight of your suitcase should not exceed 10 kg.
Allowed Extras
The concept of "hand luggage" includes bags with handles, large backpacks or suitcases. Besides, you have the right to take other things on the plane:
- A small handbag;
- Briefcase or borset;
- Cane or umbrella;
- One piece of warm clothing;
- Periodical or book;
- Bouquet of flowers;
- mobile electronics;
- Children food;
- Cradle for a child up to 2 years;
- crutches;
- Bag with items purchased from Duty Free.
The things listed in the list are not weighed and are not labeled during the inspection.
Dimensions and weight of hand luggage in other airlines
In order to improve the comfort of passengers during the flight, S7 Airlines has imposed the following restrictions on the carriage of things on board its liners:
- In economy class, passengers can carry a bag or a suitcase with a weight not exceeding 10 kg. Dimensions must correspond to the dimensions: 55x40x20 cm.
- In the business lounge, you are entitled to two seats with the same dimensions, but their total weight should not exceed 15 kg.
To make sure that your bag is compliant, you can check to see if it fits in the restrictive boxes posted near the check-in counters at the airport.
The airline allows you to carry in addition not only cradles, but also strollers for older children. However, the dimensions of the cradle should not exceed the dimensions of 55x40x20 cm. Walking sticks must be checked in as luggage.
The rules for transporting hand luggage on UTair aircraft are similar to the S7 restrictions: the sum of the sides and the width of the bag should not exceed 115 cm. At the same time, its allowable weight is different: in the economy cabin, one bag weighing up to 10 kg is allowed, while in comfort and business citizens are entitled to two seats, each weighing 10 kg.
It is worth considering that this rule does not apply to a child under the age of two years: regardless of the class in which he flies, he is entitled to only one seat weighing up to 10 kg.
Since the Russian airline Pobeda positions itself as a low-cost carrier, the cost of its tickets is significantly lower than that of other carriers. However, passengers have to endure the rather inconvenient - free transportation on board hand luggage administration is not provided (the cancellation of this service took place in 2015).
Hand luggage means bags or suitcases, and items from the additional list above will not require payment from you.
The fare for one piece of hand luggage in the cabin of the aircraft depends on the place of payment: on the airline's website you will have to pay 999 rubles, to the registrar at the airport to pay 1500 rubles, and upon landing you will be required to pay 2000 rubles.
Ural Airlines
In the economy cabin on board a Ural Airlines aircraft, you can carry hand luggage free of charge, the dimensions of which are not more than 55x40x20 cm, and it must weigh up to 10 kg.
In the business lounge, it is allowed to take two of the same seats, but the total weight of both bags should not exceed 15 kg. These are the norms for adult passengers - children under two years old are entitled to only one seat weighing no more than 10 kg, regardless of the ticket class.
As you can see, the dimensions of the allowable hand luggage and its weight are important parameters that should be clarified in advance, even before the start of the collection. If you want to avoid disputes with receptionists before boarding, follow the rules of the airlines and carry things in bags and suitcases that meet the established parameters.
Before flying, it is important to study the basic rules and requirements for the size and weight of luggage. Travelers are always keen to carry extra items in addition to their checked baggage. Some valuables are better to take with you, but it is important to follow the rules set by the airline. For hand luggage, maximum dimensions are provided - the size of a suitcase that can be taken on an airplane must comply with the parameters fixed in the rules.
To ensure that the trip does not cause discomfort, it is important to purchase a suitcase or bag of the required size in advance for transporting things in the cabin, guided by the regulatory requirements for transport regulation in the chosen company. The passenger must take into account the following parameters:
- allowable dimensional decision of luggage, as well as the total weight;
- number of pieces of luggage (varies depending on the class);
- a regulatory list of all items that are prohibited from being transported on board an aircraft.
Traveling on international flights, you should always remember that the standard list of allowed and prohibited items carried in the cabin may vary in accordance with additional legislation of a particular country. Airlines recommend carrying valuable and fragile items, important documents, and various digital electronic devices as hand luggage. It is necessary to take care of the packaging in advance, which is guaranteed to allow you to transport fragile items safely.
For luggage carried in the cabin, it is important to choose the right bag or suitcase. It should be remembered that the dimensions must fully correspond to the dimensions of the upper luggage rack of the aircraft. Detailed observance of the safety standards established by the airline during the flight guarantees the safety of personal luggage, as well as the safety of passengers. When transporting gadgets, you should place the devices in an additional bag in a special compartment in your suitcase.
Permissible dimensions of hand luggage
The passenger is solely responsible for the safety of their own belongings packed in baggage. It is also important to take into account the maximum possible dimensional solutions of the suitcase, which, according to the accepted standards of the airline, have the following parameters:
- the length of the luggage must not exceed 55 cm;
- the height of the hand luggage bag must be no more than 40 cm;
- suitcase width - no more than 20 cm.
The total value of all dimensional solutions of a suitcase cannot be more than 115 cm. These parameters are a kind of “gold standard” for airlines, but some carriers may establish individual additions to existing standards. General parameters may differ by 3-6 cm, so the passenger should inquire in advance about the allowable size and weight restrictions for the carriage of baggage.
According to flight safety requirements, standard luggage must fit in the main luggage rack.
Important! Low-cost airlines provide for special restrictions on the dimensional solution of luggage and set individual parameters.
Before boarding, airline employees must weigh the suitcase that you can take with you to the cabin, and also check the dimensions using a special frame. If hand luggage does not meet the required parameters, it is necessary to hand over things to the main luggage compartment for a fee - the surcharge in this case can be much higher than that provided for in the standard baggage check-in. Some companies require a rather high overpayment for “adding” luggage to the main luggage, which can be up to 4,000 rubles.
To avoid unexpected expenses, it is necessary to study in advance the requirements provided on the official website of any airline. For hand luggage, it is important to purchase a standard suitcase that fits the conditions of transportation of most companies.
In addition to the standard regulated piece of hand luggage on the plane, you can take an umbrella, flowers, a handbag, outerwear and medicines with you. In addition, the passenger has the right to take with him a stroller for a child or a cradle, baby food, as well as a wheelchair, if the dimensions comply with the established standards. Foreign airlines allow you to take an additional small bag, laptop or camera free of charge. But these things are also subject to volume restrictions.
Standard hand luggage, in addition to the “overall” check, undergoes mandatory weight control. Each aircraft model has an individual tonnage, which is strictly not recommended to be exceeded.
Permissible baggage weight in the aircraft cabin
The size of the bags that can be taken into the cabin of the aircraft is carefully controlled by the airline staff. The total weight of hand luggage must comply with the regulated parameters. Items that are larger than the established size limits may be sent to the general baggage by security staff due to the special requirements for traveling at height. It is worth noting that it is not recommended to exceed the volume and weight of luggage, it is better to check in the luggage compartment in advance things whose parameters do not meet the established criteria. All this will help to avoid additional monetary sanctions.
The general requirements for baggage weight may depend on the following parameters:
- regulated requirements of the airline;
- aircraft models;
- the class of the purchased ticket;
- general flight route.
The standard weight of hand luggage in Russian airlines is 5-10 kg.
In advance, the passenger can always check the total weight of individual baggage at a free check-in counter and, if necessary, transfer excess items to the common compartment. But if a passenger is flying only with hand luggage, he does not have the opportunity to check the weight at the check-in desk, so you need to take care in advance to find out the resulting weight “parameters”.
Strict weight control security measures are in place for each air carrier, but each of them sets individual standards. While for Russian carriers the restrictions mainly vary up to 5 kg, some foreign companies may allow items with a total weight of up to 12 kg to be transported. (for example, Air France).
A particularly strict weight control system is provided for low-cost airlines. Hand luggage for compliance with size and weight criteria is checked 3 times: during direct check-in, in the standard security area, and before boarding. All this is provided for the safety of the flight and comfortable transportation of passengers. The overall dimensions are fully designed for the dimensional solutions of the luggage compartment of the upper shelf.
The standard weight of hand luggage allowed is 8-10 kg, but some airlines, such as Thomas Cook, allow items weighing no more than 5 kg to be carried in the cabin, while Iberia sets almost no special weight restrictions.
Number of pieces in hand luggage
The total number of standard pieces of hand luggage can be established directly by the rules of the airline that carries out the transportation. According to the standard, luggage should not take up more than one piece (1 person - one suitcase). Russian airlines additionally allow you to take an umbrella, a handbag, a folding baby carriage, and also a duty-free package into your hand luggage, without taking into account the “space” occupied.
Business Class passengers can take “2 pieces” of hand luggage with them, but in this case, restrictions on dimensions and weight control will apply. For economy class passengers, standard rules apply - one piece of luggage up to 7 kg.
Important! Sometimes an exception is provided if particularly fragile items are carried as hand luggage - a slight excess in size is permissible, subject to a thorough inspection of the transported property.
What not to take on a plane
Air travel requires compliance with the rules approved by the air carrier, according to which each airline has a list of items prohibited from flying. This is a security requirement - in the case of the transport of prohibited items, security officers can confiscate luggage, regardless of value.
Combustible, as well as explosive substances, pesticides and lighters must not be carried on board the aircraft and in the general luggage compartment. It is impossible to transport unregistered weapons - a detailed inspection by the customs service will be carried out with subsequent confiscation.
Additionally, passengers cannot carry:
- toxic materials;
- toys that imitate weapons;
- various ammunition and combustible substances;
- liquids whose volume exceeds the standard 100 ml (with the exception of medicines, as well as baby food);
- any piercing and cutting objects;
- materials that belong to the category of magnetic;
- lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of more than 160 Wh.
Also, pets are not allowed on board - they have a special luggage compartment for safe transportation. Pets are transported at an additional cost. Some household appliances are also prohibited in the cabin - tweezers, a straight razor, scissors, a folding knife, knitting needles, nail files.
Travelers are most often concerned about hand luggage on an airplane. Here you should understand not only what it is, but also determine exactly the size and weight, transportation rules, permissible standards, so as not to be left without valuable things during the flight.
Today, various airlines quite often change the allowed standards, the list of what you can and cannot take with you on board the aircraft, limit the parameters of personal bags and other things. Therefore, it is worth understanding this issue in detail before the flight in order to provide for all the nuances.
Hand luggage - what is it?
This concept defines those things that can be transported in the cabin of the aircraft without giving them to the luggage compartment. Whether it is a women's handbag, a backpack, a small suitcase, a purse, a basket, a knapsack, all containers must comply with the general standards allowed by airlines for transportation.
The requirements of the companies in this respect are quite justified. After all, the size of the cabin is quite limited. Therefore, for the sake of the convenience of the travelers themselves and to maintain the safety of the flight, certain rules must be followed. And although a person wants to have with him as many favorite, useful and important things as possible that will be useful to him on a trip, the law must still be observed.
If we consider the issue in detail, it will be found that in fact the permissible norms are more loyal than it seems at first glance. For example, according to the latest accepted standards, the minimum weight of hand luggage has a limit of 5 kg. But this means that airlines have no right to demand less from you. But to allow to transport more is quite realistic.
This 5 kg sets the standard for the main bag carried on the plane. True, here you should pay attention to its dimensions, volumes. But carriers additionally allow you to take with you a backpack, a handbag, a coat, a jacket or a fur coat, any gadgets and auxiliary items that you find it difficult to do without. As a result, luggage weighing 15 kg can become hand luggage if properly packed.
To determine whether your bag fits the standard dimensions, volumes and weight of hand luggage, there are special scales and plastic containers at the airport with which you can check all these parameters. If the luggage fits easily between the walls of the frame, then you can safely take it with you to the cabin. In another case, you will have to drop off your bag at the check-in desk or shift things a little differently.
It is worth noting that today many tourist shops sell suitcases for carry-on luggage. Their sizes and dimensions are pre-fit for most standard international airline requirements. In some cases, manufacturers supplement such bags with straps that can reduce the amount of luggage already packed.
Keep in mind that when buying tickets from low-cost airlines, the requirements for hand luggage may be more stringent. There is also a difference in the parameters of the suitcase that you can take with you to the cabin, depending on the type of ticket purchased. For example, first and business class often offer two places for bags and belongings for each passenger. But, using the economy class, you will have to significantly limit yourself.
It is very important to initially study the rules of the carrier whose services you are going to use. And although there are basic rules for Russian or international companies, each airline has its own standards and conditions for carrying luggage. Having specified them, you can pre-pack your things so that everything you need is at hand during the flight.
According to the minimum requirements, it is allowed to take 5 kg of hand luggage into the cabin, plus a backpack, briefcase or handbag is added to this. But you can put quite a lot of things in them if you want. But what is more important is to clarify the dimensions of the luggage, its volume and weight.
interest-travel.ru
So, the standard average parameters allowed by most airlines are 55X40X20 cm. Previously, the total volume of a bag of any style was allowed, where the sum of three dimensions would be no more than 115 cm. Today, this rule is rarely supported, so you should pay attention to the dimensions of each side of the luggage.
If the bag you took on board the plane is not in doubt, as it looks small and compact, then it is unlikely to be additionally checked and weighed. But if the volume of hand luggage looks oversized, then you will have to go through double control - put it in a frame and on the scales.
Most often, carriers allow you to take about 5-10 kg of personal items with you, but there are quite big differences depending on the specific company. It is better to clarify them in advance so that you do not have to leave important items in the storage room or pay extra for using the luggage compartment.
How to avoid overweight?
In order to prevent an unpleasant situation when your bag does not meet the requirements for hand luggage, it is better to play it safe in advance. Experienced travelers recommend:
- Before buying a ticket or fees for the journey, open a table with the allowed parameters on the official website of the carrier.
- Purchase special bags for these purposes, which are designed for the standards adopted in most countries. So, you can buy a special backpack, which fits quite a lot of things, and he himself is light.
- If you do not stuff the bag too tightly, and also use additional straps, you will be able to tighten its volumes to the required parameters after everything is packed.
- In the case when there was an excess of hand luggage, and there is no desire to check in luggage, you can go for a trick. To do this, remove the most voluminous and heaviest thing from the wardrobe, for example, a thick sweater, from the bag and put it on. A trifle can be put into pockets, as well as put on the heaviest pair of shoes.
- Most airlines do not take into account the weight or volume of some things - laptops, outerwear, umbrellas, baby food, etc. Therefore, it is worth getting them out of the general bag and keeping them separately. Thus, the standard weight of hand luggage will reach the norm, and you will take everything you need with you.
According to the accepted dimensions, it turns out that any bulky things will have to be handed over to the common compartment, but not everyone likes this. Companies try to take into account the personal wishes of passengers and in some cases meet them halfway. So, the cabin baggage allowance, which does not fit the standard volume or weight parameters, may include:
- musical instruments (guitar, trumpet, accordion, drums, synthesizer, etc.);
- Pets;
- medicines that you have to take during the flight;
- strollers, baby carriers;
- special equipment;
- wheelchairs, crutches.
But in this case, you will have to carefully re-read the rules of the carrier whose services you are going to use. After all, each company has its own rules in this regard. Some of them allow you to carry such items with your hand luggage without additional payment and any restrictions.
Others define conditions so that, for example, a stroller or scooter folds and fits under the passenger seat in this form. Sometimes it is allowed to carry oversized musical instruments or animals only by paying for a second ticket or additional piece of hand luggage.
Norms of weight and volume
According to the latest changes to the Air Transport Rules, the law establishes minimum restrictions on the weight and amount of hand luggage. No airline has the right to require a passenger to take less things with them than these figures. But airlines often make concessions and allow even more.
So, 5 kg is the standard weight of the luggage that is allowed to be carried into the cabin of the aircraft. But with the proviso that in addition you can take a backpack or handbag. At the same time, it is important to observe other rules. There are whole lists of what you can and cannot take with you on board. And this list also changes periodically.
For example, in addition to the total weight of hand luggage, you can add outerwear, a briefcase, a bag, baby food, a stroller or baby carrier, a bouquet of flowers, crutches, a walking stick, walkers, musical instruments, tennis, squash or badminton rackets packed in special cases, etc.
Many passengers were outraged by the ban on carrying gadgets in the form of additional hand luggage - mobile phones, laptops, cameras, etc. But this only applies to their separate placement. If you pack all the equipment in a common bag and prevent overweight, then you can take these valuable things with you.
It is important to consider the weight and size requirements of the bag, as well as reread the list of additional items before you start packing for the trip. After all, different carriers have their own rules in this regard.
We list the standard rates for the economy class of each airline separately. Remember that when buying a business class ticket, you are most often allowed to carry more hand luggage.

If your hand luggage is larger or heavier, then there are two ways out of the situation:
- put it in the luggage compartment;
- pay extra for an extra seat in the cabin.
Often, airlines do not allow you to carry more things in the form of hand luggage, even for a fee, since the technical capabilities of the aircraft are very limited.
But if the company's website contains certain parameters of personal belongings and a list of those items that can be carried free of charge in the cabin, and when you check in for a flight you are not allowed to do this or you are required to pay for such a service, then you should be reminded of the Federal Aviation Rules (paragraph 135) and Order of the Ministry of Transport in the case of Russian airlines, or use the relevant laws of foreign companies.
How to transport liquids?
You can take water, drinks, personal cosmetics and some medicines into the salon. In most cases, they are considered by air rules to be liquids or gels. You can pack them in your hand luggage bag, but only adhering to fairly strict rules:
- Their total volume and weight should not exceed 1 liter.
- At the same time, everything should be packed in small containers of 100 ml.
- Even if a jar of cream has a total size of 200 ml, but there is little substance left in it, this is already considered an excess of the norm.
- Such liquids include any drinks, aerosols, gels, cosmetics (shampoo, liquid soap, lipstick, lip gloss, mascara), toothpaste, sun cream, yogurt, jam, soft cheese, butter, honey, shaving foam, perfume etc.
- Please note that alcohol in most cases cannot be taken on board the aircraft in any form, with the exception of purchases from duty free.
- All these bottles should be packed in a transparent plastic bag with a zip fastener or in a cosmetic bag measuring 20x20 cm.
Even a thermos with hot coffee larger than 100 ml cannot be taken on board. The exception is baby food, but only in the amount necessary to feed the child along the way. And in order to be able to carry pills or liquid medicines on board an aircraft, you need to have an additional certificate from a doctor on hand, which will indicate that they will have to be taken during the flight.
Shopping in duty free
Many travelers cannot resist visiting duty free shops. After all, they sell interesting things at a reduced cost, without taxes and with the ability to return part of the money spent. And all these boutiques are located in the departure area.
It is difficult to resist and not make a profitable purchase. But many are concerned about the question, where will the additional packages have to go? Do they count as hand luggage or not? Or put them in the luggage compartment?
The main rule to follow is not to open a sealed duty free bag on the plane, but rather to the very final destination. As soon as you leave the airport, you can use your purchase.
And even though different airlines there are rules about shopping at the airport, yet there are basic patterns that should be followed:
- In addition to hand luggage, a backpack and other personal items that you take into the cabin, you can also take bags from duty free. But they must be in their original packaging with a receipt attached. You should not open it until you get to the last point of the journey.
- If you purchased alcohol, then it is not subject to the 100 ml rule only if it is also packaged. In this state, store alcohol until the end of the flight. But if you want to drink something “calming your nerves”, you can order drinks from the stewardess.
- You should not buy more cigarettes or alcohol in duty free than you are allowed to bring into another country. At the same time, take into account not only the rules of the state that you are leaving, but also the laws of the host country. Be sure to ask in advance about the rules on this subject, described for the country to which you are going.
- Most often, permission for additional baggage in the form of purchases from duty free is limited to only one package. Some airlines include it in the total weight of hand luggage allowed. But it is worth noting that if the main bag and several packages from the airport look quite compact, then no one will find fault with their number.
- There are also separate rules for those who travel with transfers. So, if you bought candy, chocolate, or other goods from duty free shops, then you can bring them on board the plane for the first time. Next, you should transfer them to a common bag or main luggage, as the rules for an additional package at subsequent airports may change or not apply to purchases made earlier.
- In some cities, such shops exist not only in the departure area, but also in the arrivals area. Therefore, it is much more convenient to take advantage of the possibility of shopping already at the end point of the trip. Among such points, Zurich (Switzerland), Beijing (China), Oslo (Norway), Sydney (Australia), Reykjavik (Iceland) are considered ideal.
What is allowed and what is prohibited to carry?
Even if all dimensions and total weight of baggage are kept, you may not be allowed to take anything with you on the plane. There are rules and restrictions according to which some things are considered dangerous during the flight. By itself, hand luggage suggests that you will need money, documents, some essential medicines, water and food, hygiene products.
But it is worth noting that many passengers take with them everything that comes to their mind. And far from always these things are generally needed on the road. Therefore, it is worth considering a general table that indicates the main items and whether they should be taken in a bag and carried on board.

Food
Separately, it is worth noting the food that is often taken with them on the plane. At various airlines There are also rules for this. Some allow it, but impose only a limit on the adequate amount that a person will eat along the way, others forbid it partially or completely. Most carriers feed their passengers during flights, especially long ones.
So, in hand luggage it is best to carry solid products that do not crumble, do not deteriorate, and do not have a strong odor. But their number should be limited - exactly as much as you eat during the flight. Usually such options are allowed - bread, sweets, hard cheese, sausage or sandwiches, ready-made bars, apples, dried fruits, cookies, nuts, etc.
Serious airlines will feed passengers for free or offer a menu at a separate cost. At the same time, you can order drinks, hot food, snacks, sweets, and sometimes alcohol. It also makes sense to order lunch or dinner before the flight on the airline's website. It will even be cheaper.
Please note that any liquid or creamy products are considered liquids or gels and are subject to a 100 ml capacity limit. This applies not only to drinks, but also to yoghurts, pates, soft cheeses, butter, pudding, etc.
It is very important to take into account such a fact as a ban on the import or export of certain products to another country. When traveling abroad, be sure to read the rules of both parties, because if you decide to bring a prohibited item, it will be confiscated from you. For example, sturgeon caviar cannot be exported from Russia in quantities exceeding 250 g or more than 5 kg of any fish and seafood. And in the countries of the Schengen agreement it is forbidden to import dairy and meat products.
The same goes for fruits. And although there is a great desire to bring home tropical delicacies to treat all relatives, it is worth adhering to some restrictions. Firstly, their weight should not exceed the allowable dimensions of hand luggage.
Secondly, often even fruits carried in the luggage compartment are subject to a limit of 10 or 20 kg. Thirdly, those products that can leak, choke and thereby spoil the things of other passengers are also prohibited from being transported or they are offered to be packed in tight containers.
Products | Terms | Can I take it to the salon |
Water, juice, drinks | In bottles of 100 ml, with a total volume of not more than 1 liter | Yes |
Yoghurts, honey, jam, butter, jam | In containers of 100 ml | Yes |
Cookies, dried fruits, nuts, bananas, apples, bread, sausage, salt, sweets | In quantities for normal nutrition during the flight | Yes |
Soft cheese (camembert, brie) | In individual containers of 100 ml | Yes |
Alcohol | Only if it is packaged goods from duty free | No |
Dry ice for food cooling | Not more than 2 kg per passenger | only with the consent of the carrier |
It pays to use common sense when traveling. For example, when traveling by plane, you should not stock up on canned food, as it is inconvenient to open them in the cabin, and they have a decent weight. It is better to use lighter and more nutritious foods.
