Where is Bangkok? Bangkok is the capital of which country? Rich city bangkok gdp on
Everything that you can see in Thailand that is fascinating and unusual can be found in Bangkok, the capital of this wonderful country. It is enough to visit this place just once and you will have an unforgettable impression of this city. The capital of Thailand has a total area of 1569 km2.
This city is the center of the entire country, it is located on a plain, the Chao Phraya River flows through Bangkok. This river not only divides the city, but also serves as a convenient route for ships to move. Once upon a time there was a whole system of canals, thanks to which the city was called the Venice of the East. Now you won’t be able to see these canals, as most of them have been concreted. The capital has such a name for a reason. In fact, these are two words: “Bang” and “Kok”, which are translated into our language as “olive village”.
Residents of Bangkok
Official data states that about 9.3 million residents live in this locality. In fact, there are many more of them. Unofficially, more than 10 million live here. 90% of Bangkok's population are followers of Buddhism, but fortunately, here you can easily be a fan of any religion.
Bangkok history in brief
In the mid-14th century, a small port was built on the West Bank of the Chao Phraya River to trade raw materials and products. Once upon a time, on the site of Bangkok there was a small village, the inhabitants of which settled near the water. Olives grew along the banks of the river in the settlement. The year 1767 became important for the future of Bangkok, as ruler Taksin founded the capital Thonburi on the site of this village. Already in 82 of the 18th century, King Ram I moved it to the bank of the Chao Phraya River on the eastern side. It was in this year that Bangkok acquired its name. Officially, the capital is called Krung Thep and is translated as “City of Angels”. Tourists are already accustomed to calling it Bangkok, although this name is outdated.
1932 brought some changes to the existence and development of Bangkok. It was then that a new bridge was built, connecting both banks of the city. The population began to increase very quickly, as a result of which urban planning problems arose, by the way, they still exist to this day.
Looking at Bangkok now, one can see a developed city that is the center of Asia in matters of business and industry. This settlement ranks in importance next to Singapore and Hong Kong. Bangkok is the heart of Thailand, distinguished by its noisiness and crowdedness.
A huge problem with the city is the fact that it is literally located in a swamp. Marine clay is the main component of the topsoil and water channels. This feature has led to soil subsidence and over time its speed is increasing more and more. In some parts of the city, the road surface is already below sea level and if this does not stop, soil subsidence could lead to the city going under water in 15-20 years.
Significant Landmarks
Bangkok is capable of causing admiration and surprise, and amaze with its diversity everyone who visits Thailand at least once. There are places for every taste: for knowledge, entertainment or just for a good time. You can stay in this city for 4-7 days and create a fairly dense program of excursions for yourself. You can visit zoos, monuments, statues, temples, restaurants and cafes, places for trade and much more. It is difficult to endure more than a week here, since it is difficult to get rid of the desire to leave the hot, noisy city as quickly as possible and enjoy the heavenly places.
If you don't have a lot of time to visit every attraction, you can only go to significant places. Visit all the most interesting things and don’t waste your time if you are pressed for deadlines.
Tourists have already identified the most popular attractions:
- National Museum. Here you can get acquainted with the history of Thailand, its traditions and culture. Thanks to the large collection, you will have a good time in the museum and see a lot of interesting things.
- Temple of the Reclining Buddha. The university and research center are located here. This temple was created in the 12th century and can delight visitors with a large Buddha statue, the size of which is 46 m.
- Royal Palace. This place is Bangkok's asset. Located on the city's avenue, this palace complex becomes part of most photographs and videos. You can visit the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, where the most valuable statue of him in all of Thailand is kept.
- The city is also proud of the Temple of the Rising Sun. Every tourist will definitely like this place for its pleasant appearance. Prang Tower amazes with porcelain and ceramic mosaics, which make its appearance even more beautiful.
- Safari Park. This place will allow everyone to get closer to exotic animals. The peculiarity of this park is that all animals are in their natural habitat.
- Oceanarium. The name of this place is “Siam Ocean World” and here you can see tens of thousands of inhabitants of the underwater world. Here you can see not only harmless fish, but also sharks.
- Amusement park. This park is simply huge in size, where both adults and children can have fun.
For shopping lovers, Bangkok will be a real paradise with many shops and shopping centers with a huge amount of goods at affordable prices. In the city you can try unusual fruits and dishes, and experience the bustling nightlife. After sunset, tourists have access to various discos, bars or karaoke.
Climate
And now about the most important thing: the climate in Bangkok. It must be said right away that the weather in the city most of the time exhausts its residents with heat. During the day the temperature reaches an average of 30-32°C, and at night - 25-29°C.
From November to April the season is cool and dry, making travel at this time the most favorable. In May, rains begin in Bangkok, covering the city for several hours a day, their frequency is about 4 times a week. The rainy season ends in November.
For some, travel is most successful at this time, because the cost of travel is noticeably reduced. It doesn’t rain all the time, so you can enjoy excursions. In April and May there comes exactly that period when it is difficult to be in Bangkok at all. The capital at this time becomes hot, the air heats up to 36°, and rain is very rare.
How to get to Bangkok
You can fly to this city by direct flights or by planes with transfers. Residents of most CIS countries have the opportunity to get here. There are as many as 2 airports in the capital of Thailand, one of which is international, and the second serves more for flights within the country. From both the first and second you can get to the city center by taxi, bus or train.
Transport interchange of the city
From the capital you can easily travel around the country. From here you can leave by train, bus or plane. Bangkok is rich in bus stations - there are 3 of them.
There are no problems with city transport: there is an overground and underground metro, there are buses, you can get to your destination by taxi and a special type of transport in Thailand: tuk-tuks. The above-ground metro is not only convenient, but also allows you to enjoy the view of the city landscape from the window. This transport travels at a height of 5-6 floors, and the fare depends on the distance.
The best way to get to remote areas is by bus or regular metro. Buses also carry passengers, and there are 2 types of this transport here: with and without air conditioning, and the latter are about 2.5 times cheaper. Those who need to go to the other side of the river can use the services of a water taxi. The excursion ferry is not just a way to move around the city’s canals, but also a great opportunity to admire the beautiful places and panoramas of Bangkok.
Where to stay for tourists: hotels, hotels and hostels
They say that Bangkok has the cheapest housing compared to other capitals in the world. In a guesthouse you can rent a clean room with good conditions and air conditioning for about $15 (500 baht in Thai money). The hotel also offers rooms with air conditioning, but prices range from 23-25 dollars (from 850 baht). But for those traveling as a couple, a room in a five-star hotel or inn will cost no less than $90.
Popular hotels:
- Hua Chang Heritage;
- AETAS Bangkok;
- Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Center at Central World;
- Mercure Bangkok Siam;
- Best Western Plus;
- Grand Mercure Fortune;
- New World City – located in the very center of the city;
- Novotel Bangkok is ideal for both tourists and business people;
- Citichic by iCheck Inn;
- Link Corner Hostel – affordable price and good conditions;
- Learn Praya Suvarnabhumi;
- Happio.
Baiyok Sky is the most famous hotel in the capital, because it is in this building that tourists can admire the surroundings of Bangkok from a great height, take a photo or video as a souvenir. Those who want to relax more economically and spend less on housing should go to the Khao San area. It is here that cheap guesthouses are ready to welcome tourists for a small fee. Rooms in Siam and Silom cost a little more, and Sukhumvit is an area more popular among tourists, but the prices here are much higher. There are no attractions in such areas, so if you want to admire interesting places in the city and do not plan to spend money and time getting to them, you should rent housing in less remote areas. The colorful Chinatown can offer good accommodation at a reasonable price.
Buy real estate in Thailand - apartments and houses in Pattaya on the website
Bangkok, like most modern megacities, grew from a small, unremarkable village. Until the middle of the 18th century, this place did not play a significant role in the political life of the country, remaining, in fact, a small river port “in the wings” of the official capital of the kingdom - Ayutthaya. But after the Burmese dealt with the royal residence in 1767, destroying the city almost to the ground, the capital had to be moved to Thonburi, which at that time was an independent city and on whose territory Bangkok was located. After 15 years, the administrative center of the kingdom moved to the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River and settled on the site of the port itself, gradually growing and absorbing nearby settlements and even entire provinces.
From the point of view of local residents, the name Bangkok is considered outdated. Modern Thais call their capital nothing more than Krungthep (Krung Thep), although the full name of the metropolis consists of as many as 20 words: Krung-thep-Mahanakon-Amon-Rapanakosin-Ayutthaya-Ma-hinthara-Mahadilok-Phop-Noppharat-Ratchathani-Burirom- Udomratchanivet-Mahasathan-Amon-Piman-Avathan-Sathit-Sakkathatgiya-Vitsanukam-Prasit, i.e. “City of Angels, the highest treasury of divine jewels, a great invincible country, a distinguished state, a magnificent royal capital adorned with nine heavenly gems, the highest royal throne and palace , shelter of the gods and home of reborn souls." It is easy to notice that since time immemorial, the national pride of the Thais has been off the charts, since they “modestly” dubbed their capital “eternal treasure”, “city of angels” and “abode of the gods”. According to the Guinness Book of Records, of all existing city names, Bangkok has the longest name, and not every local resident knows what exactly it means, since most of the lexical units that form it have become archaisms.
Best time to travel
Bangkok is located in a zone of pronounced subequatorial climate, so you can bask here all year round. At the same time, the optimal time for excursions around the Thai capital is considered to be the period from November to February, when the weather in the city is clear and moderately warm (about +26 ºС), and the rains, if they happen, are short-lived. Spring in Bangkok is dry and extremely hot with an average thermometer around +40 ºС, and in the summer the city is systematically drowned by tropical downpours and hurricanes. Local autumn is a logical continuation of the Thai summer with its endless rains and average daily temperature of +27 ºС, so appearing in this point of Asia between June and October without an umbrella, raincoat and rubber boots is a real extreme.
Main tourist destinations
In total, Bangkok contains 50 districts, which are called khets here. Each khet is divided into smaller administrative units - khvangs, of which there are more than one and a half hundred in the capital. The most interesting in terms of religious attractions is the historical center of the metropolis (the region of Rattanokosin Island), located on a bulk piece of land and including the main national treasure of the Thais: the Royal Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Wat Pho sanctuary, the Temple of the Golden Buddha and the National Museum.
The Banglampu area also belongs to old Bangkok and can offer a lot of fascinating routes, starting from the Golden Mountain, in the past - the highest point of the city, ending with the remains of an ancient fort, as well as several Buddhist temples. If you are not a fan of traditional sightseeing and come to Bangkok for simple pleasures, do not pass by Chinatown, whose domain begins literally a few kilometers from the Royal Palace. Eating on a budget, shopping for cheap souvenirs and local jewelry, having a blast in dubious-looking bars - all this is best done in Chinatown. Strawberry hunters flocking to Bangkok prefer to settle in the Sukhumvit Road area. By the way, in addition to spicy 18+ establishments, this street can offer a lot of other quite decent entertainment, including inexpensive shopping.
Russians in Bangkok especially highlight the Pratunam area. This attachment is explained simply: there is fairly inexpensive housing and a good level of service, which is not such a common occurrence for the Thai capital. In addition, in Pratunam you can have a good time strolling through the numerous shops and mini markets.
Shopaholics with deep pockets and connoisseurs of pretentiousness usually flock to the business center of the metropolis - Silom. This is where the biggest deals are made and crazy amounts of money are spent. In addition, this square contains a decent number of nightlife establishments designed for the local business elite and wealthy tourists. The main shopping artery of the capital, Siam Square, can offer even more shops. Unlike Silom, with its boutiques and jewelry galleries aimed at stylish snobs, large shopping centers run here, where even the least wealthy traveler can shop.
Sights and entertainment in Bangkok
The first place in the top Bangkok attractions belongs to the palace ensemble in the old part of the city, on Rattanakosin Island. In addition to the Royal Palace building, the intricate pagodas (there are exactly 95 of them here) and the Wat Pho temple complex with its statue of a 46-meter reclining Buddha are a must-see. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is also on the list of major tourist must-sees. The statue of the creator in it, however, is not so outstanding: only 66 cm, but made of natural jade (according to another version, jadeite). Three times a year, the emerald deity radically changes his wardrobe, and it is not just anyone who changes the statue’s clothes, but the king himself.
Note: there are a number of requirements for visitors to the capital’s shrines. In particular, it is recommended to enter the temples barefoot, as well as in modest clothing. Shorts and short skirts are strictly discouraged.
In general, Thais are very religious people, which is easy to guess from the number of temples in the capital. But although there are many Buddhist sanctuaries in Bangkok, most of them are similar to each other, like twin brothers. Pleasant exceptions to the general rule are the white marble Benchamabophit with a roof lined with Chinese tiles, and Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn), vaguely reminiscent of an Aztec pyramid with a facade decorated with painted porcelain tiles. By the way, visiting the latter can be a good cardio workout, since the steps leading to the interior of the attraction are phenomenally steep. While walking in the Golden Mountain area, you can look into Wat Saket - in the past the tallest building in the capital, and today - just another authentic sanctuary with spectacular golden spiers. Representatives of the fair half of humanity are more attracted to the altar of the goddess Tabtim. In exchange for the fulfillment of wishes, parishioners leave figurines in the form of male dignity to the deity, thanks to which the altar has turned into an attraction with an age limit of 18+.
Of the local museums, the National Museum deserves special attention, located in the old part of Bangkok and offering its guests interesting exhibitions on historical topics. An incredible collection of historical artifacts, including precious porcelain, paintings and figurines, is located at the Jim Thompson House Museum. There is a shop at the museum where after the excursion you can buy products made from natural silk and other elite Thai souvenirs.
A traveler craving a cultural program is advised to check out the local theaters. The performances they perform have little in common with European theatrical art, which only fuels the audience's interest. According to reviews, the most intense performances are offered by the National and Royal Theaters, as well as the Siam Niramit Theater. For those who come for the notorious Thai exotica, the doors of the capital's transvestite shows like the Calypso cabaret are open. Just keep in mind that there are always a lot of people eager to attend such events, so if you don’t want to be left behind, it’s better to book tickets in advance.
For a quiet family holiday with children, the capital's Dusit Zoo is suitable, where you can not only gaze at representatives of the fauna, but also nurse their cubs, and also take part in feeding the local inhabitants. If you want to suddenly change your location, welcome to the Dream World amusement park, which tourists call Bangkok Disneyland. There are attractions here for every taste and age; in addition, the park is filled with funny sculptures and compositions that will become an excellent backdrop for selfies.
You can have a pleasant time in the aquarium, whose glass tanks are home to more than 30,000 species of marine mammals and fish. Since you won’t be able to dive on your own with a mask and an action camera in Bangkok, it is quite capable of compensating for this small disappointment. In the Safari World park, visitors are offered a more extensive program: there is a classic safari through natural areas, and various shows with animals, and feeding the inhabitants of the park. A fascinating immersion into the world of children's fantasies is offered by the Bangkok Dolls Museum-Factory, whose exhibition contains unique toys that are dreamed of not only by the younger generation, but also by adult collectors. You can get a little closer to local realities at the Taling Chan floating market. The place, of course, is purely touristic, so the price tags for souvenirs are significantly inflated by traders, but you can eat here relatively cheaply.
All sights of Bangkok
Where to stay
The most fashionable hotels in Bangkok are located in areas such as Silon and Siam Square. The surroundings of Sukhumvit Street are also built up with hotels, designed primarily for the tourist elite. For a traveler who is not burdened with a sizeable bank account, it would be better to go to the Pratunam area: here you can meet compatriots at every step, and there are a dime a dozen inexpensive hostels.
Khao San Road is home to seasoned and unflappable backpackers who won’t be intimidated by the not-so-clean rooms, the low level of service and the abundance of hot spots. Well, since housing here is rented out at very bargain prices, Khaosan is not yet complaining about the shortage of guests. For a more decent overnight stay, you should look at the neighboring Rambuttri Street, where there are plenty of clean hotels and hostels, but there is much less noise and crowding.
Useful information: when checking into Bangkok hotels, it is common practice to charge security deposits for the use of the bar and other services. At the end of the stay, unused funds are returned to the guest.
As for prices, housing in Bangkok has become more expensive over the past few years. The average cost of apartments in the local “five” at the height of the high season already fluctuates around 5500-6000 THB, although particularly lucky comrades manage to catch “hot” offers here in the range of 2600 THB. A day's stay in a three-star hotel usually falls in the range from 1000 to 2000 THB. An overnight stay in a not very popular hostel will cost from 360 to 500 THB (the cost of a bed in a shared room for 6-8 people).
Safety
The capital of Thailand is quite friendly towards tourists, although petty theft and some national types of fraud still occur. To avoid unnecessary problems, do not carry large sums of money, jewelry or a passport with you (it is more advisable to replace the latter with a photocopy). Riding the Bangkok metro during rush hour is also not recommended: carriage hustle and confusion are the best friends of the local train riders.
You can also get money in local go-go bars. Usually the cost of drinks and ping-pong shows, announced by the club barker, is several times lower than what is included in the final bill. For the same reason, try not to ask taxi drivers where to find a good restaurant in Bangkok. In 99 cases out of 100, you will be taken to an establishment designed for tourists, where the driver will receive a commission for you, and you will receive an astronomical bill for a very mediocre meal.
Learn to fend off pseudo-guides who offer to take you to one of the local temples for a symbolic sum or who promise to find economical accommodation. You can still enter the sanctuaries here with an entrance ticket, and when looking for overnight accommodation in Bangkok, it’s better not to trust anyone at all, unless you want to stay in a dirty closet in an area with a dubious reputation.
It is also not customary to drink tap water in the Thai capital; it is better to get by with bottled water from the nearest supermarket. If you plan to get from Bangkok airport by taxi, make sure that the driver turns on the meter, or bargain desperately - they really like to overcharge tourists in the “city of angels”.
Transport
Getting around Bangkok is cheaper and more convenient by bus. There are several types of them here: primitive without air conditioning (a social option, designed for the poorest segments of the population), with air conditioning (considerably more expensive), with only seats (the most expensive type). In addition, the capital has several night bus routes running through the streets from 23:00 to 05:00. The cost of travel directly depends on the distance and degree of comfort of the vehicle.
For your information: experienced tourists claim that saving on air-conditioned transport in Bangkok comes at a cost, since only seasoned Thais can withstand the stuffiness of public buses.
Nimble tuk-tuks (motorized rickshaws) do not lose their relevance, but since this type of transport is “tailored” for a tourist clientele, traveling in the company of local extreme sports enthusiasts is quite expensive. By the way, it is better to negotiate the fare in advance so that the driver does not have a chance to inflate the amount. An alternative to a tuk-tuk is a motorcycle taxi, the essence of which is that you are simply put on the back seat of a regular motorcycle and rushed at top speed through the streets of Bangkok.
There are two types of metro in the city: elevated - BTS and classic subway - MRT. The cost of a trip on the BTS is based on the distance and the number of stops the train makes. You can buy a smart token for the elevated metro at ticket offices or special machines. According to the rules, the card should be attached to the turnstile at the entrance. At the exit, the same operation is performed to determine whether the ticket price corresponds to the cost of the trip. If it turns out that the journey taken by the passenger costs a large amount, the difference will have to be paid additionally. If you plan to ride a lot and for a long time, the Sky SmartPass, designed for 15 trips, will help out. In general, a trip to BTS is already a kind of excursion around Bangkok. The train runs smoothly, the carriages are equipped with air conditioning, and the windows offer beautiful views of the capital's streets.
The underground metro has only one line, crossing the Sukhumvit and Silom areas. It is convenient to travel along it to Chinatown, the railway station and the Chatuchak market. The fare here depends only on the distance. To get off at the required station, the ticket must be kept during the journey.
You can ride along the main waterway of Bangkok, the Chao Phray River. River buses sail mainly within the Thai capital and are very popular among tourists. Some of them are typical types of public transport, landing at each stop indicated on the route map, but there are also express options that simply drive from point A to point B.
Rent a Car
Disorderly development, left-hand traffic, kilometer-long traffic jams and extreme motorcyclists maneuvering in the traffic flow bypassing all rules can seriously and for a long time discourage the desire to rent a car in Bangkok. If you are one of those who dared to step out of your comfort zone and made a firm decision to get behind the wheel, try to contact the representative offices of international rental companies, since local companies for the most part do not inspire trust.
On average, renting a hatchback like a Honda Brio costs 1,400 THB, prices for a C-class start at 2,000 THB, and premium options cost at least 16,000 THB. Free parking in Bangkok is found mainly near shopping centers and large restaurants. In addition, the city has paid parking lots. As for the local law enforcement officers, they work very actively, so in general it’s not difficult to run into a fine for speeding, not to mention the fact that it’s easy to end up in prison for driving while intoxicated in the Thai capital. The main excuses for fining travelers driving around Bangkok are not fastening a seat belt, lack of a registration certificate and parking in a prohibited place.
Connection
How to get there
You can get to Bangkok by plane, train or bus.
Airplane. Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is located 25 km from the metropolis and receives mainly international flights. You can fly here from Moscow with Ural Airlines, Aeroflot, Rossiya and Thai Airlines (direct flights). The average flight duration is 9 hours. The cheapest way to get to Bangkok is by bus, just don’t forget to find a schedule in the terminal building in advance. For those who value their time, we usually recommend the Airport Rail Link express train, which flies to the capital in just 15 minutes.
Bangkok is the capital of Thailand, the heart of the country. Total area 1569 sq. km, population is about 8,000,000 people (according to unofficial data - more than 14 million). Bangkok is located in central Thailand, on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, near the Gulf of Thailand.
Local residents use another name - Krun Thep Maha Nakhon or very briefly - Krun Thep, which translates as “City of Angels”. In general, the official name of Bangkok has more than 20 words and is listed in the Guinness Book of Records. And it sounds like this: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahintarayutthaya Mahadilok Phop Nopparat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchanivet Mahasathan Amon Piman Avatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Vitsanukam Prasit.
Bangkok is a city of contrasts, an incomprehensible combination of the incomprehensible: numerous temples with numerous entertainment establishments, modest decent girls and broken girls of easy virtue, chastity and permissiveness, one or two-story wooden buildings with skyscrapers, modest houses of poor Thais with ultra-modern buildings for the rich and hotels with all unimaginable amenities.
Bangkok is the country's sea and air gateway. Half an hour away is the main airport of Thailand, where most international flights fly, including from Russia. and the government are also located in the capital.
Bangkok city on the map of Thailand and the world
Story
The city of Bangkok was founded a long time ago, long before it became the capital of Thailand. In the past it was called Bang Kok, which can be translated as “Olive Village”. There was a port and a small settlement here. In 1782, the capital of the Kingdom of Siam was moved here after the former capital, the city of Ayutthaya, was captured by Burmese troops.
Who should go to Bangkok
Almost every tourist who comes to Thailand visits Bangkok with an excursion program. This is where the largest number of cultural, historical, religious and architectural attractions are located. This place is the heart of Thailand and from here you can reach all major cities and resorts.
Bangkok is more suitable for short visits. If you don’t work here, then there is not much point in living, since there is no sea, there are too many cars and motorcycles, and not enough parks and greenery.
The city is simply ideal for shopping. You will not see such low prices at any other resort in Thailand. Many people come here to go shopping and buy something for a penny. For them, there are several dozen shopping centers and markets where absolutely everything is sold.
Bangkok is also very good in terms of entertainment. It has just a huge number of nightlife establishments, bars with girls, all kinds of shows and performances. Children will not be bored either; there are water parks, zoos, amusement parks and much more for them, which you can read about in the article about.
How to get to Bangkok
Bangkok is the main air gateway to Thailand, which has flights from almost all points of the globe. Therefore, it is the easiest and cheapest to get here from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other countries. A huge number of airlines, both domestic and foreign, fly to Bangkok. If you are departing from a major city, then you will have a fairly large choice in terms of price, flight convenience and quality of service on board.
Some of the world's best airlines flying to Bangkok include:
- and many others.
Despite the growing demand for independent travel, many tourists still choose tour packages from tour operators. While losing the quality of individual components of the tour, tourists often gain in price. On the other hand, often from small cities, there is no alternative to package tours.
Departures from Russia
Direct flights, both regular and charter, are available from major Russian cities:
- and many others.
Flights from cities of the former CIS
Within Thailand, Bangkok can be reached by plane. Most flights from Southeast Asian cities also fly to Bangkok. It should be taken into account that the city has two airports, the second - Don Mueang (DMK), is used for regional flights of low-cost airlines both within the country and abroad.
2. Don Muang Airport.
There are trains and taxis available. The train station is located across the street from the terminal. The train runs frequently and travel is cheap. With buses, everything is more complicated, since the signs that hang at the stops do not correspond to the buses that stop there.
You can take a taxi in the arrivals area, or walk to the highway (there will be no 50 baht surcharge for landing at the airport). You can also be greeted with a sign and not have to worry about anything.
What to do and what to visit
To visit Thailand and not see Bangkok would be a big miss. Even if you are not interested in sightseeing, there are plenty of interesting things to do here. For example, the Chao Phraya River, which is very good for a boat or ferry ride. Or, where you can buy anything at the lowest prices in the country.
There are many that children will enjoy: water parks, zoos, aquariums and amusement parks. Single men - an abundance of available girls and entertainment for adults (a lot on, and in). Party people - nightclubs and discos. Gourmets – an abundance of all kinds of restaurants with dishes from all over the world (the first on the list, of course, are Thai). In a word, whatever the purpose of your visit to the city of Bangkok, you can do almost everything you want and crave.
It is best to visit Bangkok with an excursion program for 4-5 days. If you are not limited to a short two-week vacation, but came to Thailand for a long period of time (for example, to spend the winter), then it is better to devote as much time to the city until you get tired of it.
You are unlikely to want to stay forever; after all, it is noisy here, there is a lot of gas pollution, traffic jams and other negative factors that exist in all major metropolises of the world. Only local attractions are unique; everything else is available in seaside resorts, for example, in Pattaya: accessible girls, clubs, massage parlors, restaurants. Plus, there are water activities and a beach. Only business people who want to open their own business in Thailand can stay in Bangkok for a long time.
By the way, if by the will of fate it so happened that you had to stay in Bangkok and want to swim, then you can take a tour to Koh Larn, which includes a transfer and everything you need to have a good whole day at sea.
Attractions
But still, the majority visit the city of Bangkok for the locals. There are a lot of them, there are several hundred temples alone. Many can be reached by ferry along the Chao Phraya River. It is best to buy a ticket for 150 baht for the whole day and travel by ferry from one attraction to another. An excursion along the canals (klongs) of the Chao Phraya River will also be very interesting. For this purpose, you need to rent a boat (about 800 baht - not for each person, but for the entire boat). She will take you through the Thai neighborhoods, where you will see how the locals live in their modest houses next to the river.
For you, we have made a brief overview of which ones are worth seeing first. Well, if this is not your first time in the capital of Thailand, you can see unusual places that are not typical for your first visit (read).
Thailand is loved by many tourists. But Bangkok is rightfully considered the most contrasting city in the country, which contains a lot of interesting things. The city always makes a lasting impression on its guests.
Capital of Thailand
Bangkok is the capital of Thailand. The city is located in the center of the country, in the delta of the Chao Pai River, on flat terrain. The river flows through the entire city and is the transport artery of Bangkok. At one time, a network of canals was laid as additional infrastructure, thanks to which the city was dubbed the Venice of the East. Later, some parts of the system were concreted. The population of Bangkok, according to official statistics, is approximately 9.2 million people. But unofficial data speaks of a larger number - more than 10 million people. It is worth noting that Thailand is an amazing country. Bangkok is quite a cosmopolitan city. Most of its inhabitants (more than 90%) are people who are followers of Buddhism. But at the same time, the city is quite tolerant of other religions. The area of Bangkok is approximately 1.5 thousand square kilometers. Its size is constantly increasing. The city plays a leading role in the religious, cultural, and economic life of the country. Bangkok, among other things, is also an incredibly popular tourist center, because tourism is one of the sources of income. The city is regularly visited by guests from around the world. It can be compared to an entire state. The metropolis even has its own flag. Bangkok has long been the gateway to Thailand. After all, all management structures are concentrated in the city.
Tourists should remember that the time zone of Bangkok is different from Moscow, the time difference is +7 hours.
City of Angels
The Thai name of the city translates as the city of angels. Bangkok is the most exotic and amazing of all eastern capitals. No wonder it is so popular among travelers. Any tourist is immersed in the world of Buddhist temples, gold and incense. The nightlife gives Bangkok a special charm. With the onset of dusk, the city does not fall asleep, life in it does not freeze for a single second.
What language do the people of Bangkok speak? The language in general is a national pride because of its incredible complexity. Most of the city speaks Thai. Local residents rarely learn foreign languages. But workers in the tourism sector, as a rule, speak English; sometimes you can meet people who understand Russian.
Thailand has a constitutional monarchy. The country is headed by a king, and the government is headed by a prime minister.
A little history
The history of the city began in the fourteenth century. At that time, a small trading port was founded on the western coast of the river. Its main purpose was to supply food to the capital of the country, which at that time was the city of Ayutthaya. However, it was destroyed in 1767 by the Burmese. The capital was temporarily moved to the opposite bank of the river from Bangkok. In 1782, after defeating the Burmese army, the king ordered the country's capital to Bangkok.
It is worth noting that the Thais immediately began to actively rebuild the new center of the country. The image of the new capital was very similar to the previous capital. The same canals and temples were built in the city as in Ayutthaya.
City districts
To be fair, it is worth noting that Bangkok is a modern, dynamically developing city that is expanding every year. Its entire territory is divided into districts. The main attractions of Bangkok are located on Rattanakosin Island. Here you can see temples and monasteries that can tell about the distant past of the city. The island is home to the famous Wat Pho monastery, where you can see the statue of the Sleeping Buddha, as well as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Royal Palace.
The center of the capital is the Sukhumvit and Silom districts. They house company offices, embassies and the city's tallest buildings. Among tourists, the center is known for its incredibly vibrant nightlife. This is where the largest number of nightclubs, cafes and restaurants are located.
The city is famous for its Indian quarter, which gives the capital some unusualness. Residents of the quarter wear traditional Indian clothes, it seems that you are not in Thailand, but in another country. This area is full of authentic Indian traditions. Tourists should visit the local market to choose something they like among the huge variety of fabrics.
Chinatown is no less colorful. Its narrow streets and strong aromas, medical centers and Chinese food are all reminiscent of China. By the way, this area cannot be called safe, so tourists should not appear in it at night.
Siam Square is considered a shopping center. There are a large number of different shopping centers here. According to experienced tourists, shopping in Bangkok is incredibly interesting and exciting.
Climate
Bangkok's climate is subequatorial. The city is warm throughout the year, so there are no significant temperature fluctuations. The most comfortable time to visit the capital of Thailand is from November to February. But from March to April the weather in the city is incredibly hot. At this time, the thermometer rises above +35-40 degrees.
This period is not very good for relaxing in the city, unless, of course, you are tired of the heat. After the sweltering heat comes the rainy season - from May to October. At this time, torrential downpours are quite common, sometimes flooding the whole of Bangkok. The duration and intensity of rains can vary greatly. Sometimes the rain subsides after an hour, and sometimes it drags on for the whole day. September and October are the wettest months; it is at this time that you should definitely avoid traveling to Bangkok.
Restaurants in the city
Baghkok is a city for foodies. Thai cuisine is filled with delicious fresh seafood dishes. Lobsters, crabs, fish, tiger shrimps are incredibly tasty here. Local restaurants offer a very varied menu, and seafood can be prepared for you not only according to Thai recipes, but also according to European ones. There are a lot of food establishments in Bangkok, ranging from simple cafes to expensive and elegant restaurants. On Rachada Street you can visit the most famous restaurant in the world, which is also the largest establishment. The area of the establishment is so huge that the waiters work in roller skates. “Floating” restaurants are popular among tourists, where you can not only have a delicious dinner, but also take a river cruise. It is worth remembering that there are establishments in the city that offer traditional dishes from other peoples of the world.
Sights of Bangkok
The capital of Thailand always attracts tourists with museums, ancient temples and cultural venues. Along with ancient complexes, skyscrapers and modern shopping centers coexist here. The city has a special atmosphere thanks to the population of Bangkok, which is friendly and hospitable. It’s not for nothing that the Thais are called the most smiling nation.
Tourists should definitely visit the main Buddhist shrine - the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, which is a single complex with the Royal Palace.
The shrine is a luxurious building in Thai style. The Buddha statue itself is quite modest. The interior decoration of the temple is of greatest interest. The Buddha statue is called emerald, but outwardly it is impossible to understand what material it is made of - jade, jadeite or emerald. There are many legends regarding the history of its origin. When going to the temple, do not forget that when visiting the shrine you must follow the dress code. The population of Bangkok is very sensitive to religion and everything connected with it.
Another must-see attraction is the Royal Palace, which consists of several buildings. The architectural ensemble was built back in the eighteenth century. The royal family does not currently reside here. But numerous ceremonies with their participation are held in the building. On the territory of the residence there are temples, galleries and other buildings.
Aquarium
Tours to Bangkok are largely popular due to its numerous attractions and exotic culture. Among the beautiful ancient temples of the city there are also quite modern buildings and attractions. One of them is a huge aquarium, which is considered not only the most famous in Southeast Asia.
The establishment is located on the first floor of a famous shopping center. The aquarium has an area of about 10 thousand square meters. It’s hard to imagine, but about 30 thousand aquatic mammals and fish live here. The establishment is divided into seven zones - “Wet Forest”, “Weird and Beautiful”, “Open Ocean”, “Sea Jellyfish”, “Living Ocean”, “Deep Sea Reef”. At the aquarium, you can ride on a glass-bottomed boat to get up close and personal with its inhabitants. The facility is incredibly popular and visited by guests due to the fact that on its territory you can not only see fish, but also feed them or swim side by side with sea creatures.
National Museum
For tourists who want to get a closer look at the culture of Thailand, we can recommend visiting the Bangkok National Museum. By the way, it has the richest exhibition in Southeast Asia.
The museum consists of several buildings. It is located in the very center of the city near the Royal Palace. His collection consists of objects representing completely different eras. Among the items on display here you can see weapons, ceramics, theatrical costumes, transport, handicraft items, and jewelry. On Thursday and Wednesday, the museum offers guided tours in different languages.
Temple of the Golden Buddha
Temple of the Golden Buddha is considered the most famous in Hong Kong. Oddly enough, many tourists are completely unimpressed by the very modest statue of the Emerald Buddha. So the gold one will definitely impress. The fact is that the statue weighs 5.5 tons. The meter-long sculpture is made of pure gold. The eyes are made of Thai sapphires and pearls.
The statue has not only an impressive appearance, but also a rather interesting history. During the war with the Burmese, the population of Bangkok tried in every way to preserve the shrine. Therefore, it was decided to cover the statue with plaster. Time passed and somehow they completely forgot about her. And only in the twentieth century a new temple was built, in which it was necessary to place a worthy statue. As a temporary option, they decided to use a plaster sculpture found in one of the houses on the outskirts of Bangkok. During transportation, a piece of plaster broke off, and people saw what was really underneath it. In such a miraculous way, the shrine returned to its place.
Dusit
If you come to Bangkok with children, then you should definitely visit the Dusit Zoo, where representatives of different continents live. The park has incredibly well-groomed vegetation. Animals here live in spacious enclosures, which are separated from visitors by moats with water. The zoo is a must on the must-see list. There is a lot of entertainment on its territory: cafes, playgrounds, attractions and even a zoology museum.
Once on the site of the zoo there was a botanical garden and a small collection of animals for the royal family. But in 1938, the king made the park a public property. And now the establishment is open to everyone, including tourists.
A train runs through the park, and you can rent a bicycle or scooter for ease of movement. Guests of the establishment have the opportunity to feed the inhabitants and play with the cubs. The park part of the complex is no less interesting; walking along it, you can take stunning photographs and also communicate with elephants.
Royal Barge Museum
The museum is located in the Bangkok Noi Canal area. This exhibition tells about the times when boats were the main form of transport, used even by members of the royal family. The museum displays eight royal ships, which sometimes even go out onto the river during the most significant state celebrations. The establishment has fifty trained rowers on staff who propel the vessel.
