Tour of the Camp Nou stadium: Video
Camp Nou (cat. Camp Nou, IPA [ˈkam ˈnɔw], translated as “New Field”) is the stadium of the Barcelona football club. Since its opening in 1957, the stadium belonged to the Catalan football club and was initially named Estadi del FC Barcelona (FC Barcelona Stadium), however, even then it was called Camp Nou. It officially received its current name in 2000 after a game against Real Madrid. The Camp Nou capacity is 99,354 spectators; This is the largest stadium in terms of capacity not only in Spain, but throughout Europe. The stadium is the 12th largest stadium in the world in terms of spectator capacity and the second in the list of stadiums intended only for football, second only to the Mexican Estadio Azteca. The Camp Nou hosted European and World Cup matches, as well as matches in the 1992 Olympic football tournament, including the final. The field has repeatedly hosted the finals of major European Cup tournaments. In addition, the stadium is often used as a concert venue: Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, U2 and others performed concerts here.
The stadium was built when Francesc Miro-Sans was president of Barcelona. He promoted the project for the future Camp Nou due to the low capacity of the old Camp de Les Corts stadium, and also because arch-rival Real Madrid had built the Estadio Chamartín (now known as the Santiago Bernabeu). The design of Barcelona's new stadium was entrusted to the architect Francesc Mitjans (Miro-Sanz's cousin). The first stone was laid in March 1953, and the initial budget was 67 million pesetas. However, during the work, difficulties arose due to unforeseen changes in the soil, which increased the construction period and the costs of the stadium, which reached 288 million. The club expected to cover the construction costs by selling the site of the Les Corts stadium, but the Barcelona municipality delayed for ten years in transferring the land to another category, which led to a temporary shortage of funds. Francisco Franco forgave the club's debt. The stadium opened on September 24, 1957. Barcelona have since parted ways with their former stadium and played at the Camp Nou, giving thousands of fans who lacked space at Les Corts the opportunity to attend their favorite team's matches. When it opened, the Camp Nou was one of the largest and most magnificent stadiums in the world, with a capacity of 90,000. At first it was envisaged that the stadium would be named after the club's founder, Hans Gamper, but later it was decided to take a more neutral one: Estadio del Club de Fútbol Barcelona (FC Barcelona stadium). However, the stadium was popularly known as "Camp Nou" (which in Catalan means "new stadium" or " new land"), because in relation to Les Corts it was new. Eight years after the opening of the stadium, President Enric Laudet called a meeting to discuss the adoption of the official name of the stadium. Among possible options there were Estadi Barça and…

Camp Nou is a football field owned by the Barcelona football team. The name translates as “New Field”. This building is legendary, one of the most interesting sights in Spain and throughout Europe.
After its latest improvement, the stadium, equipped with lighting equipment, has become a bright, colorful spectacle. This stadium is larger in size and capacity than all football fields in Spain and Europe.
It also has a five-star status according to UEFA, which depends on how much the stadium can accommodate and the level of its equipment.
The stadium can accommodate slightly less than 100 thousand spectators. In terms of the number of fans that can be accommodated in the stands, this sports arena ranks twelfth among all stadiums in the world.
How huge it is can be seen in the photo. And among arenas intended only for football games, it is in second place after the largest stadium in terms of capacity in Mexico, the Azteca.
On the city map you can see that next to this huge attraction there is football stadium smaller sizes. Its name is Mini Estadi, and world football stars train here.
Also near this largest stadium there is the La Masia school, where young fans of the game are trained. Tournament competitions of the European Cup, the Olympic Games and the well-known El Classico took place here - the eternal struggle between the beloved Barcelona club and the Madrid club Real.
The attraction is located in Barcelona, the central city of Catalonia (Spain). The exact address Avinguda Artistides Maillol s/n, 08028, but the sports facility can be easily found on the map without an address, choosing the Blaugrana Sports Palace as a reference point.
History of the construction of the stadium
The reason for the construction was that the previous Camp de Les Corts stadium did not have sufficient size and capacity. At the same time, Barcelona's rival, Real Madrid, opened the Estadio Chamartín football arena, also called the Santiago Bernabeu.
The decision that it was vital for the city to build this stadium was made by the then-current president of the country, Francesc Miró-Sans. The president entrusted the task of designing the future Barcelona stadium to the brother of the architect Francesc Mithans.
In March 53 of the last century, construction of the stadium began. The construction of the building at the initial stage was supposed to cost the management 67 million pesetas. However, in the process, difficulties arose due to the characteristics of the land under the structure, and the cost of the project increased to 288 million. Since there were insufficient financial resources at that time, construction could have been delayed, but soon the club’s debts were forgiven and the construction of the structure was carried out.
In September 1957, construction work was completed and Camp Nou began operations. At that time, this sports facility was the largest on the globe. About 90 thousand spectators could watch the competitions of their beloved football team. You can see numerous photos of the constructed stadium.
Famous matches played at the Camp Nou
One of the first games held at the new stadium was a friendly match between Barcelona and Legia from Poland in the early autumn of 1957. The score was 4:2 with the Catalan team leading.
The first scheduled official meeting took place in early October of that year. Barcelona played with a score of 6:1 in their favor against the Real team from Jaén. The best players in that meeting were: Martinez, Vilaverde, Tejada and others.
1964 The European Championship finals were organized at the Camp Nou. The semi-final game between the USSR and Denmark took place. The result is 3:0 in favor of the Soviet Union. 38,556 people came to support the historic match. In addition, the Danes and Hungarians fought for 3rd place in the final here, 3:1 in favor of the latter.
The first match of the football World Cup in 1982 was decided to be held at the largest football stadium in Spain - Camp Nou. After the official opening, a game was played between Belgium and Argentina. The Belgians won with a score of 1:0.
Over the course of two months, five games took place, one of which saw the stands completely filled with spectators; the number was 95,000 people. Fortunately, the capacity of the stands allowed us to accommodate so many people. The average number of people attending these 5 games was 64,000.
The Soviet Union took part in these games twice, defeating Belgium with a score of 1:0. Countries of teams that took part: Argentina, Belgium, Poland, Italy, USSR.
The Camp Nou also hosted the final of the Summer Olympic Games, held in 1992. That time, Spain defeated Poland by a small margin - 3:2
The history of the struggle between the clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid
Barcelona first played a rival club (Real Madrid) in 1902. Then Real Madrid had just appeared, and Barcelona had already been playing for three years. The meeting on the field ended in a loss for Real with a score of 1:3.
Also, the reason for rivalry was the war between the President of Barcelona and Franco, who was then ruling Spain. Since Real Madrid was the favorite football club of the Spanish dictator, Barcelona's struggle with its rival on the field came to symbolize the indomitable spirit of the Catalans.
In every match of a political nature, Barcelona fought for its independence with Madrid. In the Spanish Cup, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona by a significant margin of 11:1. In the history of rivalry between these two clubs there was also poaching good players to each other's side. And every time it caused a storm of emotions among the fans.
So Michael Laudrup, one of the leaders in Barcelona, went to the side of the enemy Real Madrid. When he appeared at the Camp Nou, the crowd greeted him with shouting signs of “Judas!”, which demoralized the player and he asked for a replacement.
The next similar incident happened with Luis Enrique, who, on the contrary, moved from Real to Barcelona, the fans tried to do something similar, like the last time. But the biggest scandal erupted when Luis Figo left Barcelona for an enemy club. His appearance at the Camp Nou caused such a resonance among the fans that many objects flew at him: pens, mobile phones and everything that was at hand. Also the ritual burning of a photo of a football player. And the most memorable thing was the flight of the pig's head towards Figo.
After all these events, attempts were made to close the stadium, but they were unsuccessful. All these moments were captured in photographs and entered the annals of the historical war of these teams at the Camp Nou.
Famous personalities at Camp Nou
During the world championship, John Paul II, the Pope, visited Camp Nou and became one of the members of the sports club.
In addition to organized sporting events, the Camp Nou was often used as a venue for performing artists. Such celebrities as M. Jackson, F. Sinatra, Luciano Pavarotti, Julio Iglesias, Jose Carreras sang here. Fashion shows are even held here, as models are often found among the wives of football players.
Any matches held here are accompanied by a festive atmosphere. Among the fans you can meet anyone from ordinary citizens to Arab sheikhs. Football fans from all over the world come here to watch the game or take a photo as a souvenir of the Camp Nou stadium.
Construction work to modify the stadium
The first reconstruction of the stadium took place in 1981. The stadium became wider and its capacity increased to 120,000 fans. The next improvement occurred due to the emergence of another UEFA requirement for the mandatory provision of a seat for each seat. In order to lose the least amount of space as a result of reconstruction, the height of the lawn surface had to be lowered. As a result, the number of seats was reduced to 98934. Dimensions of the playing field: length - 105 m, width - 68 m.
On the territory were built: a center for employees of the Barcelona football club, an office where management is located and carried out. The museum has become one of the main attractions of the stadium and has high attendance. It stores numerous awards, various attributes and historical photos games.
2007 marked an anniversary for the stadium - 50 years have passed since its construction. On this occasion, an international competition among architects was created. The jury selected the best projects for the future stadium.
The competition was won by the British company Foster and Partners, whose previous work was the Mary Ax skyscraper in London, the Collserola skyscraper. At the initial stage, the construction budget was equal to a quarter of a billion euros. The demonstration of a model of the future structure took place in the same year, before the competition between Barcelona and Sevilla. Construction began in 2008. Reconstruction of the stadium is ongoing.
Facts about Camp Nou:
- largest stadium in Europe;
- Second by size football stadium in the world;
- Capacity 99,354 people;
- The maximum recorded attendance was 120,000 people in 1985.
FC Barcelona: More than a club
In 1898, Swiss sports fan Hans Gamper came to Barcelona to work. In 1899 Gamper decided find other players, interested in forming a football team in the city, so he placed an advertisement in the sports magazine Los Deportes. After all, he and eleven other men from different countries got together to form football club Barcelona.
His goal was to create a club that would unite people of different nationalities and was managed by the club members themselves. As a sign of gratitude to Catalonia for its hospitality and friendliness, Gamper decided that the club would be in keeping with the Catalan identity, hence the slogan "Més que un club" or "More than a club."
Currently, the club still represents the original values introduced by Gamper: Catalan identity, democracy and universality.

Review
I enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone, whether you are a football fan or not! Personally, I don't think buying the Stadium Tour Plus is worth paying extra for, as the video wearing virtual reality glasses lasted only 5 minutes and simply showed several historical football matches. You wouldn't lose anything by watching this on a regular screen. However, the audio guide was quite informative and thanks to it I learned a lot of information that I would not have found on the Internet.
In conclusion, I would recommend purchasing the Stadium Tour as you will get an equally interesting experience for less money. Next to all the museum exhibits you will find description and don't miss any important information.

If you're interested in the Camp Nou tour and the players' professional lives, you're probably interested in their personal lives. I wrote an extensive article about Messi's house With detailed description mansion and photos of the house!

Camp Nou or Nou Camp?
In Catalan, "nou" (new) can come before or after "Camp" (Camp), so both are "technically" correct. Both names were correct until 2001. President Joan Gaspart convened referendum of club members to decide which name to use. According to its results, 68.25% voted to do camp Nou official name stadium.
When the stadium was completed, plans were made to name it after Joan Gamper, who founded the club. However, due to its association with Catalan nationalism, pro-Franco authorities opposed it, leading to the creation of the name "Estadio del FC Barcelona" or the FC Barcelona stadium.
How to pronounce Camp Nou?
The pronunciation of Camp Nou has caused many difficulties for many foreigners, as the sound is unnatural in many other languages.
