Named the most dangerous aircraft in the world (11 photos). Russia took the lead in deaths in air crashes (photo, video) When was the last time a plane crashed
The statistics of the largest air crashes in the world for 1974-2020 show that the main cause of tragedies in the air is the human factor (crew or controller error).
The worst plane crash ever with the participation of two airliners occurred in 1977 in the Canary Islands - when trying to take off at the Tenerife airport, a Boeing-747 of the Dutch airline KLM crashed into a PanAm Boeing-747 in the fog. As a result of the collision, 578 people died. The collision of the airliners occurred due to a language barrier: the Dutch pilots did not understand the commands of the dispatcher, who spoke English with a Spanish accent.
In 1985 there was plane crash, which is considered a record for the number of passengers killed in a single plane crash over the past 40 years. On board the crashed Japanese Boeing-747 were 524 people, of whom only four survived. The reason for the death of the Boeing is poor-quality repairs.

PHOTOS of the largest air crashes in the world
For all the drama of tragedies in the air, the history of aviation also knows cases that can be called funny and happy at the same time. At one time, the young king of Morocco, Hassan II, was during an anti-government putsch in the air. A mutineer officer in an F-5 fighter attacked the huge royal Boeing-727. Already on approach to Rabat, the fighter fired its first missile. She demolished the rightmost engine of the liner, but the plane continued to fly on the remaining three. The second missile destroyed a nearby turbine, but Boeing survived that too. The pilot of the fighter opened fire with a 20-mm cannon, but after that the plane continued to fly. Only after the chief pilot of the Boeing-727 announced on the radio that the king had been killed (it was a military trick), the fighter turned back to the base, and the liner landed safely at the capital's airport.
Statistics is an impartial science. It does not belittle or embellish the details. She presents the picture as it is. The statistics of crashes in Russia is one big disappointment in domestic aviation. When you start looking at the causes of plane crashes, you often come across the phrase “pilot error” or “crew error”.
It's right. The human factor leads among the causes in Russia and the world. What are the biggest air crashes in Russia over the past 10 years? Unfortunately, there are many. And if in the United States the statistics of crashes is falling, then in Russia it is only growing. What are the main reasons for this?
So, leading by a clear margin - human factor. Insufficient and unqualified training of pilots in many ways lead to such sad results.
Airbus A330-300 of the Aeroflot company.
Many experts note that old Soviet models are still being used, which should have been written off long ago.
Another reason is the greed of airlines, saving on the quality of aircraft maintenance and the purchase of new parts and equipment.
As a result, equipment wears out, parts are not replaced, and the aircraft becomes unusable. But it is not removed from service. There are cases when the plane flew to the point of complete wear and tear, up to the catastrophe!
List of largest air crashes in Russia
Over the past few years, Russia has had quite a few very sad disasters. One of the most recent is the crash of a Tupolev Tu-154 en route to Syria, December 25, 2016. This is the biggest accident in 2016.
TU-154 from Utair.
The causes of the crash have not yet been clarified, due to the difficulty in deciphering the black boxes. It is only known that the plane crashed into the Black Sea, taking with it the lives of all passengers and crew.
March 19 of the same year a FlyDubai plane crashed on its way to Rostov-on-Don from the UAE. All people died. The causes of the disaster are still being investigated, but so far only intermediate results have been announced.
That night there were difficult weather conditions, because of which the plane made two landings. After the second time, it began to decline sharply and simply collapsed on GDP.
Biggest disaster in 2013 the fall of the Boeing 737, near Kazan. All passengers and crew were killed. The accident also occurred during the landing approach.
The reason is negligence and failure by the crew to fulfill their duties, as well as their insufficient readiness for flights.
Aircraft TU-134.
Another terrible catastrophe that occurred on the territory of Karelia, death of TU-134 when landing. The plane hit trees and crashed. One of the reasons is poor visibility in foggy conditions. 47 people died, but 5 managed to survive.
Plane crash near Yaroslavl Yak-42 led to the death of the entire Lokomotiv hockey team. In this disaster only 1 person survived. On takeoff, the plane crashed into a radio beacon and crashed on the river bank. The reason was also the unpreparedness of the crew.
Monday - April 2, 2012 turned out to be the last day for most of the passengers and crew of Utair Flight 120. Only 10 managed to survive this disaster. The accident occurred after takeoff itself, after 42 seconds.
The reason was the failure of the PIC from anti-icing treatment, which led to a deterioration in the aerodynamic capabilities of the aircraft. Plus, the crew could not notice the stalling of the aircraft in time.
Which Russian planes crash more often?
In the article on our website, you can see that the second place in the ranking of the most dangerous aircraft in the world is IL-76, and the third - notorious - TU-154. TU-134 takes the sixth place.
Three models of Russian manufacturers were included in this list. It says something. However, for example, the same TU-154 was never decommissioned, as a result of which disasters continue to occur.
The history of air transportation has more than one hundred major disasters. Such accidents, although rare, are usually fatal. The most terrible plane crash to date has claimed the lives of almost six hundred people.
The most famous plane crashes
As you know, even a minor mistake made while operating an airliner can lead to its crash. It is the human factor that often causes most disasters. Today, large-capacity aircraft are rising into the sky, because of this, catastrophes are becoming more and more large-scale. Here are some of the more famous major plane crashes.
Flight No. 123 Japan Airlines
Five hundred and twenty people were killed in the 1985 crash of a Boeing 747 belonging to Japan Airlines. He was supposed to fly from Tokyo to Osaka. After twelve minutes of flight, technical problems made themselves felt.
After the Boeing's keel came off, the team continued to fly the plane for thirty-two minutes, trying to stabilize the state of the airliner. However, he got out of control and crashed into mountain range. Four passengers are known to have survived.
Disaster over India (Charkhi Dadri)
Three hundred and forty-nine victims - this is the result of a mid-air collision between a Boeing 747-100V and an Il-76 aircraft. The accident occurred just sixty kilometers from Delhi. Il-76, owned by Kazakh Airlines, dropped from fifteen to fourteen thousand feet without obtaining permission. As a result, he rammed the stabilizer and the left wing of the Boeing.
No one survived this terrible accident. The Boeing disintegrated while still in the air after the collision, the IL remained “undamaged”, but lost control.
Air crash in Ermenonville
In France, the largest plane crash that occurred in 1974 is considered to be the largest. This is Turkish Airlines Flight 981. The plane was supposed to fly from Istanbul to Paris, and then fly to London. After takeoff from the airport in Paris, there was a sharp decompression of the cabin. This happened due to a poorly fixed cargo hatch, which, unable to withstand the load, opened. Control systems have been damaged.
Just seventy-two seconds after the incident, the plane crashed. Three hundred and forty-six people were victims of the Ermenonville disaster.
Crash L-1011
The Saudi plane, which had made a stopover in Riyadh, was on its way to its destination, Jeddah. Seven minutes into the flight, a fire broke out in the cargo hold. The team decided to return to Riyadh.
The airliner managed to land, but for unknown reasons, did not turn off the engines, but continued to move, stopping much further than the firefighters waiting for it. They did not dare to approach the board. Twenty-three minutes later, the plane was already completely enveloped in fire. All those inside, and this is three hundred and one people, were burned or died from suffocation.
Flight IR655
In the summer of 1988 over Persian Gulf An Airbus A300 was shot down in Iranian airspace. He flew from Tehran to Dubai. The USS Vincennes misidentified it and shot it down using surface-to-air missiles.
America never pleaded guilty, and no apologies were made to the families of the two hundred and ninety victims. Nevertheless, the US authorities paid almost sixty-two million dollars in compensation.
Flight No. 191 American Airlines
In the history of American air travel, the largest in terms of the number of victims and the most famous is the disaster that occurred in 1979. The plane flew from Chicago to Los Angeles. After takeoff, one of the engines failed, which was the result of poor maintenance of the airliner. As a result, the engine broke off, damaging the wing - the airliner crashed near the runway. Two hundred and seventy-three people died.
Plane crash near Donetsk
On July 17, 2014, a terrible plane crash of a Malaysian Boeing 777 took place near Donetsk. The plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
His crash happened over Donetsk. Nearly three hundred people died. As you know, the Boeing was in the zone of active hostilities and was shot down.
The results of the investigation should be made public in 2018.
A321 crash over the Sinai Peninsula
On October 31, 2015, the Airbus A321-231, which was operating a charter flight on the Sharm el-Sheikh-St. Petersburg route, disappeared from radar 23 minutes after takeoff. The wreckage of the plane was found near the town of Nekhel. The tragedy claimed the lives of 224 people - 7 crew members, 192 adult passengers and 25 children were killed.
Among those who returned after the holidays was a little ten-month-old girl - Darina Gromova. Her photograph at Pulkovo Airport, which her mother posted on a social network with the inscription "Main Passenger", became a symbol of the plane crash and was replicated by many media outlets. The A321 crash has become the most massive death of Russian citizens in the history of world aviation.
The most terrible plane crash to date The most terrible, unexpected and even ridiculous is the plane crash that occurred in 1977. She claimed the lives of nearly six hundred people.
At the airport in Tenerife in 1977, two large airliners collided during takeoff. We are talking about Boeing - 747, owned by the Dutch and American airlines. They ended up in Tenerife by accident. Airplanes were redirected there because of the terrorist attack that took place in Gran Canaria the day before.
The Boeings were moving along the taxiway towards each other and did not have time to avoid the collision. Five hundred and eighty-three people died in that crash. Only sixty-one passengers survived.
According to the site, the fastest planes in the world were taken out of service precisely because they often had an emergency.

Air transport is much safer than other modes of travel. However, the number of air crashes in the world, although less than the number of road accidents, but many air incidents are much larger. Both to the catastrophe itself and to an increase in the number of victims, if the tragedy has already happened, any accident can lead. Crew misconduct, malfunctions on board, terrorism, adverse weather conditions - all this can cause the accident to be included in the list of "World's Largest Air Crashes". Many of them were distinguished by a huge number of victims.
Air crash statistics in the world
Every 2-3 seconds a plane takes off or lands. Air transport transports about 4.5 billion people a year, and only about 1,000 of them become victims of tragic accidents. The statistics of air crashes in the world claims that in 2014, for example, there were 15 accidents in which 980 people died, in 2015 the number of accidents was only 5, the accidents claimed the lives of 478 passengers and crew members.
Boeing hijacked by terrorists on 11.09.01
During the coordinated terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, two domestic aircraft were hijacked. In terms of the number of victims of a plane crash, the world is ahead of the flights Logan - Los Angeles and Boston - Los Angeles, which on the ill-fated day fell into the hands of terrorists.
In total, four planes were hijacked by terrorists, but another Boeing fell on a field in Pennsylvania without reaching the target, another crashed into the Pentagon building. The plane that attacked the military department caused the death of approximately 64 people from the number of passengers and crew members, another 106 people were injured on the ground. Another flight crashed on the field as a result of a struggle between terrorists and crew members, along with passengers, there were 44 dead. The purpose of this liner was the White House.
Flight Logan - Los Angeles terrorists sent to the south tower of the World Trade Center. Events developed in the following sequence:
- The hijackers boarded the flight around 7:30 am, scheduled to take off at 8:00 am. Two terrorists were placed in the first class, two more took seats in the business class.
- The flight was hijacked half an hour after takeoff. The hijackers killed the commander and co-pilot, drove the flight attendants to the front of the ship.
- The plane veered off course, air traffic controllers noticed the change and attempted to contact the pilots.
- Several passengers were able to make a call from the hijacked aircraft, providing information about the hijackers and the situation on board.
At a speed of almost 1000 km / h, the plane crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center. There were 65 people on board, all of them died. About 637 more people died during the attack, from an explosion, tower collapse or fire, and were also trapped on the upper floors.
The second Boeing to attack the WTC towers
The plane, following the Boston - Los Angeles route, crashed into the WTC tower fifteen minutes earlier. This is the biggest plane crash in the world. After taking control and killing the pilots, the terrorist tried to make an announcement to the passengers of the aircraft, but mistakenly contacted the Boston Center. He said that this and several other planes were hijacked, and the terrorist himself plans to return to the airport. The military department received information from air traffic controllers about the hijacking of the aircraft just nine minutes before the crash, the fighters planning to intercept the plane took to the skies seven minutes after the WTC attack. All 92 people on board were killed, and about 1,000 people on the ground were also victims of the terrorist attack.
Collision on the runway
The biggest plane crashes in the world include the case that occurred on March 27, 1977. Two planes collided in the Canary Islands - flights from Los Angeles and Amsterdam. The number of victims in both aircraft was 583 people, more than fifty were injured.
Shortly before the accident, a terrorist attack was committed at the largest airport in the Canary Islands. A bomb exploded in the waiting room of the air port, the incident did not cause human casualties, however, some passengers who were waiting for boarding flights, who arrived and met were injured. The airport administration decided to temporarily stop receiving aircraft, so that all flights were now directed to Los Rodeos.
The small airport was overloaded. To the unfavorable situation, weather conditions were added, as well as inoperative lights marking the boundaries of the runway. In addition, there were communication problems - the air traffic controller spoke with a strong Spanish accent, the pilots interrupted each other. The collision happened nose to nose.
As a result of the accident, one of the main reasons for which was a misunderstanding between the controller and the pilots, the International Civil Aviation Organization developed a single standard of phrases so that the number of air crashes in the world does not increase due to the incorrect interpretation of the words of the crew.
Plane crash near Tokyo
The largest single plane crash occurred in 1985, 112 kilometers from Tokyo. This and others are very famous plane crashes of the world. The list has grown, and this incident was placed in fourth place after the attack on the WTC towers by two aircraft, as well as the incident in the Canary Islands. As a result of the crash, 520 people died, but such a large number of victims could have been avoided.
Twelve minutes after takeoff, the tail stabilizer came off, for half an hour the crew kept the aircraft in the air, but then the plane crashed into a mountain. It is not known exactly how many passengers and crew members died directly in the fall and hit the ground. With a timely start of the rescue operation, more people would have survived. This established the investigation.
The timing of the start of the search for survivors was delayed due to competition between Japan's numerous rescue services. The rescue team arrived at the crash site only half a day after the incident. Only two women and two girls were found alive, who were immediately taken to the hospital. In addition, doctors found that some passengers remained alive for 10 hours after the plane crashed.
Mid-air collision over Charkhi Dadri
The terrible plane crashes of the world were replenished with one more incident on November 12, 1996. Then two planes collided in the air over the Indian city, the total death toll was 349 people. The causes of the crash (and this is the largest air crash in the world among mid-air collisions) were recognized as poor knowledge of English by the crew members, which created difficulties in communicating with the controller, incorrect understanding of commands, lack of standard phraseology, poor performance by the crew of their duties, and insufficient professionalism. In addition, among the causes of the tragedy are the presence of only one air corridor on this section of the route, the absence of a navigation system on both aircraft and a radar at the Delhi airport.
Turkish Airlines crash near Paris
The worst plane crashes in the world include an accident with a plane Turkish Airlines near Paris. The airliner, flying from Istanbul to London via Paris, went into a dive a few minutes after takeoff due to the opening of the cargo hold and decompression. The cause of the crash was a technical malfunction of the aircraft.
As a result of the incident, 346 people died. There was not even a fire during the crash. The plane literally cut through the forest belt, collapsed into small fragments. Of all the dead, only 40 people were visually identified.
Terrorist act 176 km from Cork
The world's largest air crashes are often the result of terrorist attacks. Such a case was the crash near Cork (in fact - in the neutral waters of the oceans). In 1985, an explosion occurred in the cargo hold of a plane en route from Montreal to Bombay via London. The pilots did not even have time to give a distress signal, as the plane was destroyed. Everyone on board died, that is, 307 people.
The catastrophe was preceded by another terrorist attack, which can be recognized as failed. An explosion occurred on a plane landing in Tokyo when passengers had already entered the airport building, and loaders were working in the cargo hold. Two people from the airport staff were killed. If the explosion had taken place an hour earlier, all 390 people flying from Vancouver to Tokyo could have died.
Fire aboard L-1011 in Riyadh
The world's worst disasters include the 1980 incident at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's largest airport. A fire broke out a few minutes after takeoff and the pilots requested an emergency landing. The crew received permission, and the plane landed successfully at the airport of departure.
However, the ground rescue services were in no hurry to start a rescue operation. Airport staff were unable to quickly open the emergency and main exits because they needed time to understand the instructions on the English language. After opening the exits, the flames spread throughout the cabin, and five minutes later the fire was extinguished. All passengers and crew members of the aircraft were killed.
Malaysian Boeing crash over Donetsk
Air crashes in recent years in the world were marked by an exceptional incident that happened in 2014 over the war zone between Ukraine and the DNR/LNR. A Malaysian Boeing flying over the so-called gray zone - the territory between the two fronts - was allegedly shot down from the Buk SZK. The world's air crashes that have occurred since 2001 have been supplemented by the largest accident in terms of the number of victims.
The liner crashed near Torez, Donetsk region. The arrival of the expert group to investigate the crash was delayed, and after the arrival of international experts, their work was complicated by ongoing hostilities. The results of the investigation revealed that the plane was indeed shot down by a missile. The crash killed 298 people.
An-32B cargo accident in Zaire
A Russian cargo plane on a domestic flight to Zaire in 1996 failed to take off and skidded off the runway. There was a market very close to the runway, into which the plane crashed. The accident occurred due to an overload of the aircraft, as well as due to crew error. The incident killed 298 people on the ground, one of whom was on the plane - the incident was included in the list of "The World's Worst Air Crashes". Among the dead are mostly women and children. The massacre of the crowd over the crew of the aircraft was avoided only as a result of the coordinated actions of the police.
