How many milligrams can you carry on a plane. What are the rules for carrying liquids on an airplane. Is it possible to transport medicines in the trunk
Going on a trip, people, in addition to things, take with them liquids that may be necessary. When using land transport, there are no difficulties here, but when flying, you will have to strictly take into account the allowable amount of liquids you carry with you.
Category - liquid
When packing suitcases and bags, you should take into account what exactly the air carriers mean by the term "liquid". Some may be surprised by the proposed list, because it includes not only fluid substances such as water, drinks and juices.
- many types of food were included in this category: soups, yogurts, dairy products (even soft cheeses), as well as jellies, jams, honey;
- liquid substances include any kind of baby food;
- all cosmetics are treated as liquid (not only lotions, but also sprays, gels, creams, lipstick, etc.);
- perfumery (perfumes and colognes) are also liquids;
- this category also includes hygiene products - liquid soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, men's shaving products, deodorants;
- medicines in vials, vials and ampoules are also included in this list;
- even if canned foods are 90% solids, they will still be classified as liquids.
The list for transporting liquids also includes household chemicals and fertilizers, but it is unlikely that anyone will carry them into the cabin with them. As for alcohol, this is a separate issue, which will be discussed below.
The norms of liquids in baggage
Having familiarized themselves with the free baggage allowance (each airline has its own parameters), travelers begin to pack their bags. What to put there is their personal preference. You can put clothes, toys, souvenirs or completely fill bags with liquids. Here, airlines have no restrictions on allowed items.
The main thing is that the weight is in line with the norms. It may have its own weight restrictions, which it is recommended to find out about in advance on the website of the air carriers whose services you intend to use. Otherwise, you will have to pay extra for excess mass.
Important! Take into account the ban on the transport of hazardous substances - poisonous, narcotic, capable of provoking an explosion or fire. You will have to more carefully select the contents of the luggage in which you plan to carry liquids.
The size of the container in which the liquids in the luggage will be packed does not matter. The main thing is that it is airtight, and there are no leaks in flight.
Rules for hand luggage
To liquids that are allowed to be carried on an aircraft as hand luggage, air carriers are more strict, so they have established certain rules and regulations. Each passenger should know how much liquid can be carried on the plane:
- the volume of each vial, tube, vial, bottle should not exceed 100 ml;
- the maximum total volume of liquid carried in hand luggage on the plane is 1 liter;
- All liquid must be packed in a resealable transparent plastic bag.
Additional Information. Such a bag with a clasp can be purchased in the office departments. It has dimensions of 0.2 x 0.2 m, and it easily accommodates the required number of bottles of liquid.
Before forming luggage, it is recommended to make a list of the essentials that should be at hand in the cabin of the liner. So it will be easier to invest in the norms for carrying liquids in hand luggage. Everything else can be sent in baggage.
Inspection
Passengers go through airport security screening before boarding the aircraft. Baggage and hand luggage are checked not only for the transport of prohibited items, but also for compliance with the norms of the liquids present there.
If incorrect packaging or an excess exceeding the norm is found, these liquids from hand luggage will have to be transferred to baggage, if there are no contraindications to this. In situations where it is impossible to do this, it is proposed to give extra or abnormal things to the mourners (if any).
Additional Information! Special containers are installed at the inspection point, into which everything that has not passed the quotation for hand luggage is sent, the owners will have to say goodbye to these things forever. In order to prevent such a situation, all the nuances associated with the transportation of liquids should be clarified in advance.
You also need to take into account the requirements of the host party if you plan to fly abroad - each country may have its own rules and restrictions on how much liquid you can take with you. So it is not a fact that it will be possible to easily pass the inspection on the other side.
Transportation of alcohol
Many airlines are categorical about the transport of alcoholic beverages. If in some cases its presence in luggage is still allowed, then even 100 ml (the so-called “scoundrel”) cannot be carried in hand luggage. The exception is drinks purchased at Duty Free, they can be taken into the cabin, but on condition that the package remains intact until the end of the flight.
Note! In business class on some flights, passengers are offered a choice of alcoholic drinks, but this does not mean that the airline will allow such liquids to be carried into the cabin.
It should also be taken into account that many countries do not allow the importation of alcoholic beverages (even those bought in the duty-free zone). Before you travel, you should find out what the law is in force in the country where the flight is planned, and clarify whether it is possible to cross the border with alcohol.
Transportation of medicines
There are restrictions on the transport of medicines, and this list should be familiarized with in advance. It is also necessary to take into account the fact that in most countries some medicines that are freely available in Russia are not allowed.
If a passenger needs drugs during the flight in excess of the standard volumes for carrying liquids, they can be carried, but you will have to worry about an extract from the medical card confirming the diagnosis. It is also necessary to stock up on a doctor's certificate confirming the need to take these drugs during the hours that coincide with the trip.
The same remark applies to narcotic drugs - they must have an official written confirmation. All medicines carried on the plane must be in the "native" container, provided with labels. Going abroad, you additionally need to have duplicate statements and certificates translated professionally into English language(necessarily certified by a "wet" seal).
Important! If there are no documents on hand confirming the need for certain medicines for the patient, then on the basis of this, in a number of countries they can open a criminal case for the illegal transportation of medicines (especially if there is a ban on them there).
Transportation of baby food
When planning to take food for children on the road, it should be borne in mind that for a child over the age of 2 years who has a separate seat, the same rules for carrying liquids apply as for an adult.
For babies who are under 2 years old on the day of departure, the airlines have a more loyal attitude - they are not subject to the rules for transporting baby food and drinks. Therefore, mothers can take these liquids on the plane as much as necessary to feed the baby for the entire flight period.
Note! If the child is already 2 years old at the time the family returns home, they lose these privileges. This should be taken into account even before you go on a trip, in order to know in advance how much you can carry on the food plane on the way back.
Goods from Duty Free
After passing through all the procedures for registration for an international flight, passengers, while waiting for boarding, can spend time in a duty-free shopping area. It is allowed to bribe drinks, as well as food and alcohol. Someone will take perfumes, cosmetics and hygiene products at a lower price. Here you can already ignore the limitation on the volume of containers - 200 ml or more in this case are not taboo.
Even if hand luggage already has the maximum allowable weight, then goods purchased at Duty Free go beyond this weight. But on the condition that the packaging remains intact when passing into the cabin of the aircraft, and there will be a corresponding receipt for each purchase. Otherwise, new acquisitions will have to be left behind.
In the cabin, it is allowed to use food and drinks purchased in the duty-free zone, but then they will have to be completely eaten and drunk during the flight, so as not to have a reason to explain to representatives of the screening service of the host airport.
When using transfer flights, you need to take into account that the packaging on goods purchased at Duty Free must remain intact at the time of transfer from board to board. And in some countries that are not members of the European Union, it is generally not allowed to carry goods from the duty-free zone if they go beyond the allowance for hand luggage.
Transportation of canned food
Some travelers stock up on canned food for the entire holiday period, which, according to the templates of air carriers, are listed as liquids. It will not be possible to carry them in hand luggage - only in luggage, since any of the cans exceeds the agreed 100 ml. During inspection, they will definitely pay attention to the expiration date, as well as the integrity of the container.
Home preservation should also be airtight and packaged in unbreakable containers. If the luggage does not exceed the maximum allowable weight, there will be no questions during the inspection. For excess limits, you will have to make an additional payment to the cost of the ticket, taking into account extra kilograms of baggage at the current air carrier rates.
Many passengers do not miss the opportunity to take caviar (red and black) with them on the road or bribe it in Duty Free. This product also belongs to the “liquid” category, it doesn’t matter if the caviar is bought as a gift or will be used for one’s own needs – there may also be restrictions on its transportation.
It is better to suggest this option in advance so that you do not have to waste money. If it is initially planned to carry caviar in hand luggage, then the condition of 100 ml will apply to it. It is better to transfer large volumes to luggage immediately. When buying in a duty-free zone, jars with caviar must be sealed for the entire period of the flight and at the time of inspection at the airport of the host country.
It is necessary to take into account the permissible volumes of the transported product. If transportation is carried out within the country, then there are no restrictions on the transport of caviar in luggage. In this case, packaging is allowed both in the original packaging and in plastic containers.
Additional Information! Going abroad, caviar can only be transported in factory-made jars with labels. But European countries allow the import of no more than 125 g of black caviar. It is unrealistic to export more than 250 g of sturgeon black caviar and more than 5 kg of red caviar from the Russian Federation.

In order not to get into trouble when booking a flight on an airplane (and even more so when arriving in a foreign country), you need to study in advance all the necessary information on how liquids are transported by hand luggage on an airplane. This will make your journey easier and more comfortable.
We explain what you can take with you on board the aircraft, but. We give lists of items allowed and prohibited for transportation in the cabin.
These tips will help you decide what to take with you on the plane and what to put in your luggage:
- Carry-on baggage restrictions are similar in many countries, but should be checked beforehand. Sometimes a list of what you can take on a plane is indicated on the ticket. During the inspection, prohibited items will simply be confiscated, despite their value.
- Check the airline's size and weight restrictions for hand luggage: even permitted items will not be allowed to be carried on board the aircraft if they exceed the established norms.
- If you bought something in a Duty Free chain of stores, be sure to keep the receipt and the integrity of the package.
- Alcohol can only be taken on board the aircraft if you purchased it from the airport duty free (eg wine and champagne). In other cases, alcohol is subject to the rules for carrying liquids in hand luggage (see below), although some airlines completely prohibit the transport of alcohol on board.
- You should find out about food on board in advance: if during the flight you are offered a delicious lunch, there is no point in bringing your own food on the plane.
What can you take on a plane
1. Food and food
Many tourists are wondering if it is possible to take food on the plane. With the exception of a few foodstuffs, you can carry almost any food and products on board the aircraft - sandwiches, nuts, vegetables, chocolate, pastries, chips, sweets, cookies, fruits, and so on. We recommend that you pack your food in transparent containers to expedite screening before your flight.
Exceptions:
- You can not take liquid and jelly-like food with you on the plane, since it is considered a liquid (for example, yogurt). More information about carrying liquids is written below in the section "What you can not take on a plane in hand luggage."
- Durian fruit cannot be exported from Thailand and some Asian countries because of its specific pungent smell, as well as durian sweets.
- In some countries, the import of certain products is prohibited or restricted - (for example, animal origin - meat, milk, etc.). You cannot bring more than 200 cigarettes and more than 1 liter of alcohol into Thailand.
- You can find out about restrictions on the import of items on the website of the Russian embassy in the desired country; the list of sites can be viewed on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
2. Medicines
What can I take on a plane from medicines? Many argue that any pills need to be taken, but you can take with you those funds that you should take at the appointed time, confirming this with a certificate from your doctor.
Most common medicines are allowed on board: drops, antipyretic, motion sickness tablets, hydrogen peroxide, dry brilliant green, bandages, patches - it is desirable that they had factory packaging and instructions. If the medicine is in the form of a liquid or spray, the volume of the vial should be less than 100 ml.
Going on holiday abroad don't forget to take out insurance. Using the service, you can compare the price of insurance from different companies and choose the best offer.
3. Digital technology
In hand luggage, you can take almost any small digital equipment and electronics. It is allowed to carry on the plane such things as:
- MP3 player
- Mobile phone and charger
- Electronic Cigarette
- Tablets and e-books;
- Hair dryer, curling iron, hair iron
- Electric shaver and electric toothbrush
- Laptop, DVD-player, camcorder, camera + charger for them;
- Phone battery, as well as portable and external batteries
Some of them are not allowed to be used, but you can keep them safe. Agree, it’s not pleasant if a camera with valuable vacation pictures is lost in luggage on the way home from Thailand?
Large-sized electronics and equipment are allowed to be taken into the cabin of the aircraft, if it does not exceed the dimensions established by the airline for hand luggage.
4. Documents, jewelry, valuables
You do not need to check in your luggage documents, money, any jewelry and jewelry. So you keep them intact, you can not worry about the safety of the suitcase for the entire flight.
Documents and their copies should always be taken with you on board the aircraft- so you protect yourself from unpleasant situations if your luggage is lost or delayed on the way.
5. Cosmetics
Many travelers are interested in the question, Can I take cosmetics on a plane?. It is allowed to take on board any dry cosmetics (shadows, powder, etc.), as well as liquids - if they are packed in accordance with the rules for carrying liquids and jelly-like substances in hand luggage (in jars and bottles with a volume of less than 100 ml.). What cosmetics can you take on a plane:
- Lotion, cream, gel
- Mascara
- Perfume, Eau de Toilette, cologne, perfumes, oils

6. Hygiene items
Most hygiene items can be taken with you into the cabin - for example, a razor with replaceable blades, a toothbrush, a comb (without a sharp tail, sometimes metal combs are not allowed). Nail polish remover is usually allowed to be carried if the bottle is less than 100 ml and does not contain acetone (since acetone is a flammable liquid).
It is forbidden to take only dangerous items in hand luggage- manicure sets (especially scissors), liquids with a volume of more than 100 ml, etc. When we flew to Thailand, we took a manicure set to the salon - while we flew from Russia normally, but during the transfer, small scissors and wire cutters (with pointed edges) were taken from us.
7. Cigarettes
You can take ordinary and electronic cigarettes in your hand luggage on the plane, but the lighter is most often confiscated during the inspection, it is better to replace it with a box of matches.
8. Flowers
A bouquet of fresh flowers can be taken in hand luggage on board the aircraft, and indoor plants and flowers in pots will have to be checked in as luggage. By the way, it is forbidden to export certain types of plants from some countries, and from Thailand - also the land, which is the property of the king.
What not to take on a plane
1. Liquids and any liquid substances
If liquids, creams and jelly-like substances do not comply with the rules of carriage, they cannot be taken on board an aircraft. However, the rules are quite loyal: you can take everything you need to the salon.
Rules for carrying liquids on an airplane:
- They must be packaged in vials of 100 ml or less.
- All transported liquids must be in a resealable transparent bag. The total volume of liquids carried by one passenger must not exceed 1 liter.
- The packaging with liquids during the pre-flight inspection is shown separately.
Transparent packaging with a clasp and 100 ml bottles can be bought in many cosmetic chains - for example, such sets are available in Rive Gauche and Rainbow Smile.
Interestingly, many substances are considered liquids during transportation. A list of what you can take on a plane only if the above conditions are met:
- Water, tea, juices in closed packaging
- All cosmetics listed above, including gels and creams
- Jelly products: yogurt, jam, honey, jelly, caviar, etc.
- Soup, pates, mashed potatoes, condensed milk
- Soft cheeses
- Any canned food, pickles, homemade preparations
- Liquid medicines in original packaging (sprays, syrups, gels, non-pressurized aerosols)
Do not take pressurized aerosols on a plane(including hairspray and shaving foam), but in fact it is sometimes possible to smuggle them in containers of 100 ml. You can not transport alcohol with a strength of more than 70 ° - it is already considered a flammable substance.
2. Strong drugs and medicines
Plain pills and medicines mentioned in the first part of the article can be carried without restrictions (but in small quantities). But strong medicines and substances cannot be taken on board the aircraft if there is no need to use them in flight.
It is forbidden to carry narcotic and psychotropic substances, including painkillers (for example, Pentalgin and Nurofen plus).
To take strong medicines on board the plane, you need to show a certificate from a doctor or a prescription (sometimes an extract from the medical history is also suitable). If you cannot provide a medical opinion at customs that you need the medicine during the flight, they will not let it through during the inspection, so it is better to put all extra pills in your luggage in advance.
If you are flying abroad, you should check the regulations for transporting medicines in those countries. For example, in many states drugs such as valocordin and corvalol are prohibited because the active substance in them is considered a drug.
3. Weapons and toys
On board you can not bring weapons and objects that can perform their functions, be it a knife or a straight razor (electric and razor with replaceable blades are allowed). The same applies to children's toys made in the form of pistols, machine guns, grenades: they are able to sow panic.
4. Sharp and cutting objects
All sharp and cutting objects must not be taken on a plane under any circumstances. These items include:
- Knives and forks
- Straight razor
- Skates and ski poles
- Screwdrivers, drills, pliers
- Metal knitting needles
- Scissors and nail files (small nail scissors with rounded ends can be missed, but not a fact)
At the same time, you can take a selfie stick, an umbrella (not always), a cane with you on board. Syringes and needles are not allowed in the carry-on baggage of the aircraft, but airport staff must allow you to take them on board if you need it for medical reasons, which you can confirm with a certificate.
It is convenient to search for accommodation while traveling with the help of the Hotellook service. It allows you to sort the options by a huge number of parameters and choose the hotel that suits you.
Rules for the carriage of Russian airlines
Still have questions about what you can and cannot take on a plane as hand luggage? Ask them in the comments, we will try to answer promptly.
Agree, traveling light is cheaper and easier than with a large and heavy suitcase. Especially if you have to move from one city to another and visit several places. In this sense, giving up bulky luggage in favor of light and compact hand luggage is the best solution.
Earlier, in the article about, we already talked about what can be considered hand luggage. Let me remind you once again that these are things that passengers take with them on the plane for free. But not in any quantity, but within strictly established limits on weight and size, which allow you to place luggage in the aircraft cabin under the seat, on a special luggage rack or in a special locker. It can be a small suitcase, a backpack, a bag, a plastic bag or a basket, and all responsibility for the safety of the luggage in this case rests with its owner.
Size and weight of hand luggage on the plane
In the Rules of Air Transportation after the amendments (order of the Ministry of Transport dated November 05, 2017), the minimum allowance for hand luggage for Russian airlines was prescribed.
Previously, the dimensions of hand luggage and the weight limit were set by airlines independently. For some carriers, this norm was simply meager, according to which only small bags with documents were allowed to be taken on board. Under the new rules, a passenger with a ticket (regardless of his fare and flight) can be guaranteed to take at least 5 kg of hand luggage on board for free.
It is impossible to reduce the established minimum of 5 kg, worsening the conditions for passengers, but please increase it if air carriers wish. These parameters are often determined by the company's policy and depend on its requirements, fare, route, flight range.
Most often, Russian carriers have a hand luggage weight limit of 10 kg in economy class and 15 kg in business class. Permissible dimensions - 55 x 40 x 20 cm (for example, in Aeroflot - 55 × 40 × 25 cm). Such dimensions allow you to place things in the cabin without problems, without causing inconvenience to passengers.
More diverse are the limits and tolerances for the size and weight of bags (from 5 to 18 kg) allowed to be carried on board foreign carriers. They can be very different from each other.
But it happens that even cheap tickets are sometimes provided with very generous carry-on baggage allowances. Therefore, before buying a ticket, you need to find out what the maximum allowed dimensions and weight are provided for at the selected fare. This information (which is often available in Russian for foreign companies) can be found on the official website of the carrier.
Such prior awareness allows you to avoid unpleasant moments at the airport in the form of large surcharges for things that, if the established norms are exceeded, must be checked in as baggage on the terms of the carrier, or getting rid of some things urgently. There is no way to pay extra for excess weight of hand luggage.
It is especially worth paying attention to and checking with the carrier the conditions for carrying hand luggage in the presence of special bonus programs and for tickets purchased from budget companies. By saving on a cheap ticket, you can later spend much more.
And if this is a trip to another country, then you need to know not only the rules of your country, but also the states where you plan to enter.
To help you, we provide a table with hand luggage allowances in some domestic and foreign airlines.

What can be carried in hand luggage?
In addition to the free 5 kilograms, passengers can carry some more things and items with them, also paying nothing for their transportation in the cabin - these are personal belongings of the passenger that are not packed in a bag / suitcase, the list of which is defined in clause 135 of the Federal Aviation Rules, updated by Order Ministry of Transport No. 409.
From what was not there before, in the new list, backpacks, purchases from duty free (albeit with a certain reservation) and medicines were added to ladies' bags and briefcases.
Also, free of charge, in excess of the allowable hand luggage allowance, it is allowed to carry:
- packed suit - portlet
- bouquet of flowers
- outerwear
- food for the child in the required amount
- crutches, pram, walker, cradle, folding wheelchair and other items, provided that they can be placed under the seat in front of the standing chair.
But something has disappeared from the new list. These are such necessary gadgets for a traveler as phones, cameras, camcorders, laptops, as well as umbrellas and books. The developers of the law explain this by the fact that all this can be carried free of charge as hand luggage (naturally, if they fit into its norm), putting it in the same briefcase, handbag or backpack. But in fact, this reduces the number of allowed free kilograms for other things.
Although, as before, there is a small loophole for passengers. Some items that are not taken into account in any way, not being hand luggage or additionally allowed items, can be carried free of charge in the pockets of the passenger's clothing.
Of the innovations: at airports, control over the weight and dimensions of additional items and hand luggage has been strengthened. This is especially true for the part of passengers who use electronic registration. Naturally, such a check is done selectively, for example, if a bag or suitcase raises some doubts about allowable weight or dimensions.
Airline employees can freely weigh hand luggage not only at check-in, but also before the passenger is ready to leave the airport building, going to boarding, and even at the airport of arrival. Technically, this is not at all difficult to do. If the baggage does not fit into the frame that controls the size, or the scales at the boarding gate show more, then it may not get on board.
According to the new rules, a "hand luggage" tag is not attached to passengers' belongings.
Of course, among the things that are delivered by the passenger to the cabin, there should not be anything that would violate the rules of safe transportation.
What can't be carried in hand luggage?
Safety standards are not always the same. In each country (and even at different airports), in addition to general rules, private rules have been developed. But the differences lie mainly in some small details and nuances. Somewhere, airport workers will make an exception for some items, while others will force them to throw them out unconditionally.
In general, the lists of things allowed and prohibited to be carried in hand luggage are similar. Nevertheless, for your own peace of mind and in order not to get into a mess, it is better not to be lazy and get acquainted with the intricacies of carrying hand luggage and baggage in the chosen airline.
As for Russian carriers, the basic list of prohibited items is contained in Appendix No. 1 of the Rules for Conducting Pre-Flight and Post-Flight Inspections No. 104 dated July 25, 2007. This list is quite large. In short, you can not carry anything poisonous, flammable, anything that can prick and cut, no scissors, knives, corkscrews, knitting needles, razors, blades and other potentially dangerous tools, substances and objects.
Some seeds, living plants, soil cannot be imported into the country (the Law “On Plant Quarantine”, Art. 16 is in force). It is impossible to bring certain types of pets without the consent of the carrier. It is not recommended to carry fake weapons on board. And even a child’s favorite toy in the form of a gun is better to put in luggage.
Special rules have been developed for the transport of liquids, food and medicines. Here, in addition to the general rules, the customs rules of states apply. And, of course, they need to be clarified.
Rules for carrying liquids in hand luggage
This category includes not only drinks and water, but also all kinds of creams, gels, deodorants, sprays, mascara, toothpaste, various oils and paints, lipstick, shaving foam, soups, canned food, jams, soft cheeses, homemade preparations, honey, caviar, yogurt, sauce, pate, jelly, cottage cheese, sour cream, drops, ointments and more.
Much of the above can be carried in hand luggage, but subject to a number of conditions:
- Anything over 100 ml must be seized and disposed of.
- All containers with liquid packed in them (cosmetics, food, medicines) must be transported in a transparent bag (20 x 20 cm) with a zipper. The total volume of all liquid substances contained in it must not exceed 1 liter.
Obviously, everything that fits into the permitted norm and does not fall into the list of categorically prohibited items or substances can be taken on board. If among them there are those that cannot be carried in hand luggage (exceeding the volume of 100 ml, nail scissors, nail files and other items), put them in checked baggage if there are no obstacles in their transportation in it.
And if hand luggage is the only baggage of a passenger, then, apparently, you will have to part with something or leave it at the airport in a storage room.
There are exceptions to the rules for transporting liquids - this is baby food, vital necessary medicines and goods (drinks, perfumes, gels) from duty-free shops. They are allowed to be transported in a larger volume.
Products from Duty Free
Regular consistency products from Duty Free can be eaten on board. As for liquid products (and other liquids - perfumes, alcoholic beverages), it must be taken into account that when departing from some countries (Russia, the EU, Canada, the USA, Singapore and others), the package from the duty-free shop of the airport of departure must be transported only sealed and sealed. The same rule applies if there are transfers along the way. You cannot open the package until the passenger has arrived at the destination and left the airport for the city.
If liquid products were purchased outside the EU in Duty Free, then in the event of a transfer to any of the EU countries, the restriction on the volume of liquid will apply to them.
If this is a trip abroad, the main rule is to clarify which medicines can be brought in, in principle, without violating the customs rules of the country of entry. It happens that some medicines purchased freely at your pharmacy are banned in other countries.
After reviewing the composition of the preparations for the presence of prohibited substances in them, the second thing to do is to select those medicines that will be required on board. Everything else is in your luggage.
Some aspects of carrying medicines in hand luggage:
- packaging must be original;
- for some transported drugs, a prescription (certificate from a doctor) is required;
- when transporting drugs that contain a psychotropic or narcotic substance, you must take a prescription indicating its name in Latin. Such a medicine is declared when imported into another country (you need to go through customs through the red corridor);
- medicines in the form of ointments, liquids, gels, creams, syrups, aerosols are transported in containers up to 100 ml. Life-saving medicines for medical reasons, with a prescription and other documents from a doctor, can be taken in the right amount.
Transportation of food
As for domestic flights, you can carry any products, as long as they do not violate the norm for weight and dimensions and the general rules for transporting liquids.
If these are international flights (when flying between countries or traveling with transfers), then everything is not so simple here. The rules of import and export of each country of visit come into effect. Therefore, when planning such a trip, it is necessary not only to familiarize yourself with the rules for export and import at the customs of the Russian Federation, but also to study the requirements of customs control in the country of destination or transfer, which are sometimes very specific.
So, for example, it is not allowed to import dairy and meat products into the EU countries. US customs does not allow most goods and agricultural products to pass from other countries. In some countries there are restrictions on the export of any products.
Some products are prohibited due to strong and unpleasant odors, such as durian. From time to time, fruits, vegetables, dry grass, herbs, nuts, tea, regulated livestock and crop products are banned. Restrictions have been placed on the export of fish, seafood, and caviar from Russia.
In any case, if there are doubts about the legality of importing and exporting a particular product from Russia, you can contact the official source (website of the Federal Customs Service).
- it is not allowed to carry homemade products and not in original packaging;
- all products belonging to the liquid category must be transported without violating the Rules: no more than 100 ml in one package;
- strongly smelling products should be well packed in cling film or a sealed bag.
Each carrier sets its own norms for baby food for small passengers, while taking into account that general restrictions on the transport of liquid products do not apply to babies under 2 years old. Therefore, for this category of children, you can safely take milk, juice, baby food, water in any quantity with you: the main thing is that it is enough for the entire flight, taking into account transfers.
If the flight is long (more than 3 hours), as a rule, you don’t have to worry that you will remain hungry. They can even feed not once, but twice. Many carriers offer preschool meals on board, which must be ordered in advance.
However, it is not at all superfluous to grab something tasty and favorite for a snack in reasonable quantities. Children (as well as adults) like to have a snack with dried fruits, fresh fruits and vegetables, sandwiches, cookies, nuts, chocolate. Everything should be well packed, and vegetables, bread and fruits should be cut (you cannot use a knife in the cabin).
This is especially true if the flight is short, performed on low-cost flights or on tickets at special promotional rates.
It is worth taking care of what to eat for those who need special nutrition (for example, allergy sufferers). Not all flights offer a special menu.
There are always a lot of questions related to the carriage of luggage and hand luggage, even among experienced travelers. This is partly due to the fact that there is no single aviation security document that would be applied by airlines around the world. These rules are developed and established by international organizations, laws within each country, airlines and airports.
As for Russian air transportation, many answers can be found in the “General Rules for Air Transportation” dated June 28, 2007, as amended on October 5, 2017 (Order of the Ministry of Transport No. 409).
To begin with, let's figure out what hand luggage is in general, and why airlines impose such serious requirements on it.
Hand luggage is a small bag, suitcase or backpack that a passenger takes with him on board the aircraft without checking it in the luggage department. All airlines have strict regulations that this baggage must comply with.
The dimensions of hand luggage for both low-cost airlines and expensive companies are the same - it is about 50 x 40 x 20 centimeters. Weight at the same time - from 5 to 10 kilograms. Such numbers appeared for a reason. In most aircraft, the compartments for this luggage are located directly above the heads of passengers - they are located approximately the same as in any bus. The compartment runs along the entire length of the aircraft and is divided into equal parts. Each of them should fit three bags - one for each passenger.
If someone puts too much bag in this compartment, then there is no room left for other people. Things have to be put in the legs or the aisle - an hour-long flight in this position can be tolerated, but a ten-hour flight is already very difficult.
How much liquid can I take in hand luggage?
You can take one liter of liquid on the plane, which must be packaged in separate containers with a volume of 100 ml.
It is important to know that in airplanes, the word “liquid” is understood not only directly as water, juices, tea or other drinks. This also includes perfumes, eau de toilette, creams, oils, varnishes, scrubs and dozens of other cosmetic products.
In many stores today, you can easily buy special kits for transporting liquid on an airplane. They usually include containers for everything that we usually take with us on the road. Such kits are made of transparent plastic and immediately packed in a cosmetic bag for easy transportation.
Another option is to buy a travel kit of cosmetics, such as most large companies have. This is very convenient if you do not need any specific tools. Cosmetics are already packed according to all standards, it does not need to be poured.
Low-cost airlines are the most attentive to the issues of compliance with all norms. For any excess, they have quite large fines, so luggage is checked very carefully.
This restriction does not apply to products that were purchased in the free trade zone - duty free. All goods from there, including water, perfume and alcohol, can be carried on the plane. But remember that if you have planned transfers along the way, then problems may arise with these products as well - it is better to clarify all the information on this matter in advance.
Can there be exceptions?
The plane is the safest transport in the world. This security is largely due to the strictest rules, from which practically no exceptions are made. It is useless to quarrel with airport employees and try to return the seized - the most aggressive passengers can be detained and then you simply will not fly anywhere.
An exception can be made only in case of vital necessity - if it is a medicine or other liquid that is urgently needed by a sick person. Even in this case, you need to prepare and get a certificate from the doctor in advance that the patient really needs this drug.
Also on board are sometimes allowed to take special water, baby food or medicine for children. However, this issue is resolved in each specific case separately and often directly depends on the airport employee who conducts the inspection.
What is generally forbidden to take in hand luggage?
The list of things that are forbidden to take on a plane is actually rather big. In fact, airport employees have all the powers to take anything from you. The only reason is that the item could in any way harm the passengers or crew.
- All that burns are explosives or those that catch fire quickly and easily.
- Any kind of flammable fuel, such as diesel and gasoline.
- Paint thinners, directly paints;
- Alkalis, acids, poisons, other chemicals that are toxic, caustic or corrosive.
- It is forbidden to take any canned food on the plane, even if their volume does not exceed 100 ml;
- Radioactive substances, mercury, chlorine and other components that can evaporate toxic fumes;
- Alcoholic drinks or other liquids that contain more than 70% alcohol;
- Gas cartridges;
- Firearms, their models and even toy copies. Even if the owner has permission and all documents with him, such items still need to be checked in. Models and toys are subject to this rule for safety and peace of mind on board;
- Any kind of fireworks, lists, lighters, ammunition;
Important! Before collecting, check again if the country you are traveling to has its own rules regarding baggage. Some states have rather strange restrictions on the import and export of various substances. Such nuances are not reported when buying a ticket, so it is better to find them out on your own. All these rules are created solely for the safety of passengers, so do not be offended by harsh rules - they minimize the risk that something will go wrong on board.
Detailed information about all the nuances of transporting liquids on airplanes can be found in the videos on YouTube. Here is one of them -
After the terrorist attacks in the UK, a clear program was developed to combat extremists and, since 2007, very strict restrictions on the transport of liquids on the plane have been introduced.
General requirements - in hand luggage in the cabin of the aircraft passenger can take on request no more than one liter of liquid, packaged in at least 10 bottles or containers, packed in one transparent bag with a clasp or a large transparent cosmetic bag. We clarify that each vial or container can be full or half empty, but the volume must be no more than 100 ml, less please. These requirements must be met on domestic or outbound flights to the US, EU, Russia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Cyprus, Asia and the Middle East.
So, we recall that liquids include:
- cosmetics (shampoos, foams, gels, lotions, tanning oil, nourishing masks…);
- perfumery (perfumes, colognes, air fresheners, deodorants, mascara, lipstick…)
- food and drinks (alcohol, juices, soups, honey and jam, mashed potatoes and everything else that is not free-flowing like sugar or cereals);
There are large special boxes at the airport, where everything selected after inspection is thrown - that resembles a liquid, exceeds the requirements and the norm. Favorite perfumes and haute couture shampoos suffer the same fate - Khan cosmetics. You can’t violate the rules for transporting liquids on an airplane, buzz - they won’t be allowed on the flight. Therefore, it is very convenient to take your favorite cosmetics and perfumes in disposable packaging on the road, or use empty bottles of vitamins or medicines, the volume is already indicated - you don’t need to bother. Pack the rest in large containers in luggage. Difficulties await only those who fly without luggage, here you will have to buy either on the spot or in Duty Free boutiques. Keep this in mind when packing your bag for the road.
Limits on the amount of liquid in hand luggage does not apply to baby or diet food, medicines and dietary supplements, lens fluids required during the flight. Additional baby food in bottles or vacuum jars, water, milkshakes, juices on the road are allowed only for children under 3 years old. During security screening at the airport, you may be asked to taste a questionable liquid.
The need for medicines for personal use, dietary supplements (if they are classified as medicines), dietary nutrition must be confirmed by a doctor's opinion and a prescription. When flying to Schengen countries, a form under Article 75 must be filled out.
If you are flying with a child and want to insure yourself against any force majeure situations (flight delays, etc.), then you can take two packages with the usual juices and drinks with you on the road - take one with you that meets all flight safety rules to the aircraft cabin, and the second smaller one will be used in the waiting area. Any juices, drinking water can be additionally bought in the duty-free zone, the prices are almost always affordable.
Always remember that you can take the plane take purchases from Dutik only in branded sealed packaging and a check, and open only during the flight. Only allowed on low-cost airlines one hand luggage, so the packages with the purchase must be put in a bag hand luggage. According to the reviews of frequent flyers - the lowest prices in duty-free in London, Rome, Frankfurt and Munich.
Aquarists have suffered greatly from the introduction of norms for the transport of liquids: - earlier, fish could be freely transported in the cabin, and now figs. Only fry or small ones are allowed - 50 ml of liquid is poured into a sealed individual bag, the fry is allowed in, the rest is pumped with oxygen, or air for labyrinth fish. Fish-travelers are free to stand for two days. When they fly in the cabin, no problem, and in the luggage compartment they will be frozen or crushed during loading.
On a trip, you can take a travel water filter with you - very convenient, especially since you need to drink a lot of liquid in flight so that your blood does not thicken.
Often, instead of baby food on a flight, it is better to take dry formula, a non-spill cup, a drinking bowl, a food warmer, and the stewardess will always bring hot water, and check in the refrigerator bag for groceries.
The amount of liquid allowed to be exported or imported into the country in baggage is indicated in the customs code of a particular country.
For example, when flying within the EU countries, you can import duty-free:
- 110 liters of beer or
- 90 liters of wine or,
- 60 liters of sparkling wine or,
- 10 liters of drunk alcohol with an alcohol content of more than 22% or;
and when importing alcohol into Spain from non-EU countries, completely different rules apply:
beer -16 liters or wine - 4 liters
or strong alcohol only 1 liter.
And from Moldova you can take out for personal drinking no more than 2 liters of wine, and 5 beer. When transporting alcohol, you need to clarify the rate of export from the country of departure and the rate of import of alcohol in the country of arrival. They must either match, or your transported alcohol must meet the minimum rate, otherwise there may be trouble. A purely everyday story - one tourist, in memory of her beloved country, took with her 5 liters of original fragrant wine, specifying the export rate - everything is within the law. She flew to her native country, she was checked with a scanner and stopped for smuggling, since according to the rules of her native country, only 2 liters can be imported duty-free, for the rest, a fine, confiscation and an UG article.
In addition, some airlines have special requirements for the carriage of liquids in baggage, for example, AEGEAN AIRLINES will only carry liquids in the baggage compartment if they are packed in wooden sheathing.
Alcohol can only be carried by adults.
In 2014, special equipment will be installed at the airports of the EU countries, which will detect explosives. This will remove restrictions on the transport of liquids and alcohol. Finally, instead of a stopar, it will be possible to freely take half a liter of a real native and break away in flight, and in general, all restrictions on the transportation of high-quality and natural drinks are introduced so that people forget that they are like that.
